Latest / Wits & Weights | Strength & Fat Loss Over 40 / Did I Trigger the "Fat Folks" on Social Media?
Transcript
- 0:00Philip Pape: Wits and Weig family, welcome to a bonus episode, totally unscripted.
- 0:04Philip Pape: I'm literally coming off of looking at my threads profile, and I had to comment on a specific post that's kind of blowing up a little bit, but there's one comment in particular I wanted to call out, and this is related to GLP wants.
- 0:17Philip Pape: So if you're not following me on threads, go to app Wits and Waits.
- 0:19Philip Pape: I'll put the link in the show notes to follow me on threads.
- 0:22Philip Pape: You're gonna see a lot of interesting conversations over there, some really good conversations, but also some, you know, half-wit comments, I would say.
- 0:29Philip Pape: In this case, I'm not gonna go that far.
- 0:31Philip Pape: I'm gonna say that the person I think has a certain positive intention in mind, but maybe misinterpreting what I'm saying.
- 0:37Philip Pape: Anyway, the post is about GLP ones.
- 0:39Philip Pape: And what I said in the post is that the drugs work, they're a miracle of appetite suppression, they're an incredible tool for those with uncontrolled food obsession or significant weight to lose.
- 0:49Philip Pape: We also see in the trials that they report significant muscle or lean mass loss of up to 25 to 40%, but that is when you're not resistance training.
- 0:58Philip Pape: And so my conclusion in the post is hey, whether you're on a GLP one or not, you're gonna lose muscle in a calorie deficit if you're not lifting weights.
- 1:06Philip Pape: Go ahead and draw the conclusion.
- 1:07Philip Pape: Now, to me, that's a positive empowering message, even though there's a negative lens to it in terms of you're gonna lose muscle.
- 1:14Philip Pape: The message is you're gonna lose muscle either way.
- 1:16Philip Pape: Let's not judge or blame people on GOP1s or scare them into thinking they're gonna lose way more muscle than anyone else.
- 1:23Philip Pape: It's the same concept.
- 1:24Philip Pape: It's just those drugs put you into usually a fairly aggressive deficit that you don't have to think about because your appetite is so suppressed.
- 1:35Philip Pape: And her comment said something about that you'd be surprised to learn that most fat folks, her words, not mine, are experts on their own bodies.
- 1:44Philip Pape: Now, later on, I kind of called her out for the use of that language, and she said, Well, I'm a fat folk, I'm calling, I think you're the people calling out.
- 1:50Philip Pape: And I think her her message was, hey, this message is everywhere.
- 1:53Philip Pape: It's not breaking news.
- 1:55Philip Pape: Why are you sharing it?
- 1:56Philip Pape: And my thinking is, first of all, like you can't share good information too much.
- 2:01Philip Pape: Uh, there's so much misinformation on the internet and on social media that just the fact of sharing something that's been shared before, I don't think that should be a social media crime, I guess.
- 2:12Philip Pape: And I also think that the message that people on GOP ones lose muscle mass, but also people not on GLP ones lose muscle mass.
- 2:18Philip Pape: So, hey, resistance training is really important.
- 2:20Philip Pape: I mean, to me, that's a very positive, important message we need to spread.
- 2:24Philip Pape: And I don't think I'm seeing that as much, although I could acknowledge that more and more are talking about it.
- 2:29Philip Pape: But it's kind of funny to say, like, oh, you just shared something that everybody knows.
- 2:33Philip Pape: Well, you either know something because it's in the world and it's part of the evidence, or you don't know it and you're making it up or it's an opinion.
- 2:41Philip Pape: And there's space for both of those as long as you acknowledge what it is.
- 2:44Philip Pape: But how is, you know, my saying, uh my sharing facts different or less than someone else sharing facts?
- 2:53Philip Pape: So that was interesting.
- 2:54Philip Pape: So I tried to be a little respectful in my reply, although I was getting a little bit emotional about it, to say that, hey, there's a lot of fear-mongering about GLP1s causing muscle loss, and there's a lot of confusion between weight loss and fat loss.
- 3:08Philip Pape: So I think it's important to reiterate, hey, we're all gonna lose muscle if we don't do something about it.
- 3:13Philip Pape: Resistance training.
- 3:14Philip Pape: And by the way, there's so many other benefits for resistance training beyond weight loss anyway.
- 3:18Philip Pape: So this is a short, a very, very short episode about how people interpret information.
- 3:24Philip Pape: And I would love you to check out my threads account and see what you think and get in on the conversation.
- 3:30Philip Pape: Maybe I could word things a little bit better, but I thought it was fairly clear.
- 3:33Philip Pape: I even said, hey, I've had a conversation with folks like Jamie Selzer, who was on the podcast.
- 3:38Philip Pape: He was over 700 pounds at risk of death, and he used GLP ones, but he also started lifting and walking more.
- 3:44Philip Pape: So part of me thinks maybe she's triggered a little bit as someone who is overweight herself, which she acknowledged, she said she is a fat folk on GLP one.
- 3:53Philip Pape: And I never use that term fat folks.
- 3:55Philip Pape: I'm like, nobody is fat.
- 3:56Philip Pape: People just happen to be who they are and maybe carrying extra body weight now or extra body fat.
- 4:01Philip Pape: Okay.
- 4:02Philip Pape: And fat is just a moniker for that, fine, but it doesn't mean you're that forever.
- 4:06Philip Pape: But I also think that maybe she's not doing some of these things and is a little bit feeling judged, and yet I'm not calling people out for that.
- 4:14Philip Pape: I'm simply stating some of the misinterpretations that we have.
- 4:17Philip Pape: Anyway, that the other problem is social media only allows you to post so many characters.
- 4:22Philip Pape: So, how do you post something that's comprehensive enough without rambling on that doesn't also seem like rage or clickbait?
- 4:29Philip Pape: So, anyway, check out my profile, go to threads.com slash at wits and weights, or just go into your app, Threads app and follow me there.
- 4:35Philip Pape: Check out the conversation.
- 4:37Philip Pape: Look for the one about GLP ones.
- 4:40Philip Pape: Should be easy to find.
- 4:41Philip Pape: I'll see you over there and I'll see you on the next full episode of the Wits and Weights podcast.
