- 0:00Welcome to World View Matters, discussing controversial issues, discerning current events,
- 0:10defending biblical Christianity, no topic, off limits.
- 0:16And now, here's your host, David Firazzo.
- 0:20Hello friends, family and Christ, thank you so much for tuning in, God bless you, we
- 0:24appreciate you guys so much.
- 0:26And we talk about all kinds of different topics here on the show, I have all kinds of
- 0:30different guests, but it's nice to have someone in the studio, it doesn't happen as often
- 0:36as you'd think.
- 0:37We've got, we're so blessed to have Tina Hollenbeck with us, we're going to talk about
- 0:41homeschooling, I'll give you all the websites in a minute, but first, I just want to introduce
- 0:44her, she's from Green Bay, Tina, welcome to World View Matters.
- 0:48Thank you, I'm really excited to be here.
- 0:49Yeah, good to have you in the studio, seeing you at different churches and just, she's got
- 0:55an awesome family.
- 0:56So let me give you, first of all, the website for, one of her main websites for Wisconsin,
- 1:02that is called homeschoolloft.com, homeschoolloft.com.
- 1:09And then we're going to be talking about the homeschool road map, homeschool road map and
- 1:14what that is to help families.
- 1:17But we're also going to be focusing a little bit on her book, she's written a book several
- 1:21years ago, but it's applicable to any time and any family that wants to get their kids
- 1:27truly educated.
- 1:29And that's called eight great smarts for homeschoolers, a guide to teaching based on your child's
- 1:36unique strengths.
- 1:38And this is on Amazon five star reviews, congratulations.
- 1:42Thank you.
- 1:43For the reviews.
- 1:44Thank you.
- 1:45So, first of all, let's just talk about your story first.
- 1:48Before we get into the book, I, you wrote that, you know, several years ago, your progression
- 1:54as a homeschool mom.
- 1:56Now, when you were in school, were you homeschooled by your mom and if not, you know, what made
- 2:02you decide, you know what, I really want to give my kids an education, not what they're
- 2:05getting from the government run.
- 2:07As Alex Newman would say, the government run brainwash camps, go and share a little bit
- 2:12of your story and why you went down this road.
- 2:14Well, I'm too old to have been homeschooled because the homeschooling really goes back
- 2:19to colonial days and I'm not that old.
- 2:23In the United States, particularly Wisconsin, it became legal again or started to become
- 2:29prevalent again in 1984.
- 2:31Wait a minute.
- 2:32So, before that, it was illegal?
- 2:34In some states.
- 2:35It was off, so off the grid since the early 20th century that people thought it was illegal.
- 2:41And in many states, it actually had become illegal.
- 2:44In Wisconsin, it just went out of old, so nobody was really homeschooling from the turn
- 2:48of the 20th century until, and you'll love this, it was in the 60s and early 70s, it
- 2:54was really, I don't know if they talked to each other, but it was a confluence of Christians
- 2:59who wanted to get their kids out of public school, maybe couldn't afford a Christian school
- 3:02or there wasn't a Christian school in their area, and the hippies who said, the man ain't
- 3:08going to have my kids, and we need to get them out of the system.
- 3:11And whether some of those hippies were Jesus people or not, they all were kind of working
- 3:16for the same purposes at the time, and that's how homeschooling kind of came back into popularity.
- 3:23So the 80s, wow.
- 3:24Well, that was the 60s and 70s, and by 1984, the law on Wisconsin that protects us had
- 3:29been passed.
- 3:30Okay, so what kind of law would have to protect parents from wanting to make choices
- 3:37to educate their own kids?
- 3:39Well, every state has a compulsory attendance law, and it says in Wisconsin, it's from
- 3:43the age six until 18, or graduation, every child must be in school somewhere.
- 3:50And unless you have a specific law that somehow adds homeschooling into that mix, it's,
- 3:57the bureaucrats can say that's not legal, and they did.
- 4:00In many states, they said that means a brick and mortar conventional school.
- 4:04In some states, they tried to outlaw Christian schooling even.
- 4:07They said it has to be a government school.
- 4:09And so there were all these battles that started, again, kind of the 70s, and Wisconsin
- 4:14was one of the first states to actually have a codified law in the modern era.
- 4:20And by 1993 or 1994, all the states had a law.
- 4:24Okay.
- 4:25So all the states have some sort of law at this point.
- 4:27Okay.
- 4:28So you sent me some bullet points, and these are really good as we walk through them,
- 4:32and we'll get into your book a little bit.
- 4:36The current threats to homeschool freedom, I think this is very important because a lot
- 4:41of young families don't know how to approach this, and what's coming against them, what
- 4:46are the hurdles they have to jump, so to speak.
- 4:48You talk about vouchers, and what's ESA money, can you explain that a little bit?
- 4:52Yeah.
- 4:53I actually think that is the greatest current threat to homeschool freedom, and we've
- 4:56seen it in a number of states.
- 4:58So SS stands for Educational Savings Account, and so vouchers is kind of another term for
- 5:05that very same thing.
- 5:06The idea is the government will, quote unquote, give homeschool families money to homeschool
- 5:13our kids, and it sounds real attractive.
- 5:15You know, I pay property taxes, I pay an inordinate amount of property taxes, and I've
- 5:19never sent my kids to public school.
- 5:21So the theory between people who like it is I want some of my money back, so I can
- 5:26report into homeschooling, and again, it sounds really good, but there's got to be some
- 5:30red tape somewhere.
- 5:31Well, there's no such thing as a free lunch, right?
- 5:33So I mean, you know this, and your listeners probably know they don't have a little pot
- 5:37marked Holland Beck money in Madison for me, right?
- 5:40So if they give me money back, they're giving me back what essentially by their reckoning
- 5:45is somebody else's money.
- 5:47And it's not a bad thing to account for the use of other people's money, but accountability
- 5:51means regulation.
- 5:52So anytime you take government money, there will be regulation.
- 5:56There is.
- 5:57In the states where they have added this option, they add regulation, and what's sneakiest
- 6:02of all is they want to then add that same regulation on the homeschoolers who don't take
- 6:07the money.
- 6:08Oh, my goodness.
- 6:10Because they like data, and they like information, and this has been attempted already in West
- 6:14Virginia.
- 6:15Thank God it did not pass yet.
- 6:17I don't know.
- 6:18They gave homeschoolers money if they wanted it, and they promised, politician promise,
- 6:24we'll never add that on to people who don't take the money.
- 6:27A year later in the legislature, they tried to add the same regulations on to people who
- 6:32didn't take the money.
- 6:34It didn't pass.
- 6:35Praise God.
- 6:36But.
- 6:37So would one of the regulations also be maybe they have some say in the curriculum?
- 6:42Absolutely.
- 6:43Will you take this money?
- 6:44Yes.
- 6:45And that has actually happened with Christian schools that take voucher money.
- 6:47So it's really the same principle.
- 6:49Schools that take voucher money lose their academic freedom might be slow coming, but
- 6:54it will.
- 6:55And they'll let you choose any curriculum at first.
- 6:57But then little by little they'll say, oh, well, not that.
- 6:59And not that.
- 7:00And not that.
- 7:01And pretty soon, it's basically a public school with a Christian name on it.
- 7:07Okay.
- 7:08So one thing that you sent me, I've got to make sure we get to this because I looked at
- 7:12this and said, you're kidding me.
- 7:14The incursion into Christian homeschooling of Mormon resources and theology.
- 7:20Yeah.
- 7:21What?
- 7:22We didn't know.
- 7:23Christian homeschooling.
- 7:24Yeah.
- 7:25How does Mormon theology slip into this?
- 7:27Can you explain that?
- 7:28Yeah.
- 7:29And I think, you know, along with the voucher educational savings account money, that is
- 7:33the greatest threat to homeschool freedom, Christian homeschool freedom because to be
- 7:38fair, a lot of Mormons have been told by their church that they are a Christian denomination.
- 7:44So very well meaning Mormon people who've written curriculum, I've talked to some of
- 7:49them and they legit think that they are Christians.
- 7:52So they do not understand how the Book of Mormon has, you know, they've rewritten the
- 7:56Bible to twist things and match the Book of Mormon.
- 7:59They literally don't know because the church leadership wants their general population
- 8:05to believe that Mormonism is simply a Christian denomination.
- 8:08So when you've got the people who wrote the curriculum saying that, they're like, we're
- 8:12a Christian curriculum and they're nice people and it's quality material.
- 8:17So Christians start to buy it and there's a couple of big names that that is exactly
- 8:22what has happened.
- 8:24But there is Mormon theology in it because the writers are Mormon.
- 8:27So their theology has to come into it.
- 8:30So and we weren't planning on getting into this, friends, but let's just be clear about
- 8:34the contrast if you read the Bible which is God's Word and that is our final authority.
- 8:42And you read, for example, the Book of Mormon and they've got the Pearl of Great Parise
- 8:46doctrines and covenants, things like that.
- 8:48There's theology and there's things in there.
- 8:50They don't, we don't believe the same thing about Jesus, it's a different gospel.
- 8:53So they're great people.
- 8:56But to say that it is Christian, let's define Christian, okay, I'm so glad you brought
- 9:02that up because a lot of things are happening and we're curriculum.
- 9:06You've got to fight these curriculum battles when you're a Christian parent and really
- 9:09be watching for some of this.
- 9:10So let's take a little look at your book now, Tina, eight great smarts for homeschoolers.
- 9:19Let's talk about some of these smarts, these benefits of a home education.
- 9:23First of all, what led you to write the book?
- 9:25Was it your experience, what you learned along the way, what you wanted to help other
- 9:29parents do?
- 9:30Go ahead.
- 9:31So at the beginning we said, I wasn't homeschooled, I went to a public school and I went to
- 9:36college eventually to become a school teacher.
- 9:38So I was a public school teacher for nine years and as soon as we had our older daughter,
- 9:42whom you know, which she's sweet, very sweet, the idea was I would leave my job and I
- 9:47would be an at-home mom and I always had the idea of homeschooling in my brain because
- 9:51I had met some of the pioneer families that started in 1984 and their kids are amazing
- 9:57and I thought, well, that's a cool thing, you know.
- 10:00Back in my husband about it when my girl, so my second daughter was born 11 and a half
- 10:03months later.
- 10:04I've got these Irish twins and talked to him about it.
- 10:07He liked the idea but he didn't know anything about it and his parents were school teachers.
- 10:12He didn't want to offend his parents so there's that whole thing.
- 10:15But eventually through really God's providence, he came around and we were both completely
- 10:20sold on it.
- 10:22So homeschooled our girls all the way through, never gave it a second thought and then
- 10:26they graduated together.
- 10:27My older daughter held herself back to graduate with her little sister.
- 10:31They graduated together in 2020.
- 10:33We all know it was going on in 2020.
- 10:36And at that time, Kathy Cook, who is the author of Eight Great Smarts, among several other
- 10:42books, had reached out to me and said, Tina, will you write a homeschool take?
- 10:47Not like rewriting the concept but like application for homeschoolers to her theory.
- 10:52It's not her theory but the theory that she wrote about with Eight Great Smarts.
- 10:55And at the time, it was right before my girls graduation and I said, no, I've got to
- 10:59finish well.
- 11:01And then she came back around to me in, I guess it would have been like October of 2020.
- 11:07And Moody publishes her books and Moody wanted to publish this one.
- 11:12And so I asked my husband and he said, yeah, go for it.
- 11:15You know, we'll just use the crock pot between now and whenever because you'll appreciate
- 11:18this as an author.
- 11:20I was, I agreed to do it early to mid-October and my deadline was December 7th of the same
- 11:28year.
- 11:29Oh my goodness.
- 11:30I know.
- 11:31How many chapters is it?
- 11:32It's 160 pages.
- 11:33So it's smaller.
- 11:34I forget how many chapters.
- 11:35Maybe eight.
- 11:36They wanted to make it smaller by design because homeschool mothers are busy.
- 11:39But you know, it was still content.
- 11:42And the reason was I had been a student of Kathy Cooks when she was a professor at UW
- 11:48and she taught that theory of eight great smarts, eight ways that each person is intelligent.
- 11:55And I had basically raised my children on those principles because I knew about it from
- 11:59the time I was a student.
- 12:01So when you were in college, you said she was one of your professors?
- 12:04Yes, at UW Green Bay.
- 12:06Wow.
- 12:07Yeah.
- 12:08And then she moved on and is doing the thing she does now.
- 12:10Yeah.
- 12:11Amazing.
- 12:12Yeah.
- 12:13So I knew the theory well.
- 12:14And my children on it, and obviously I'd been in the homeschool world for quite a while
- 12:18at that point.
- 12:19Yeah.
- 12:20And the idea was can I apply those principles for homeschooling parents so that they can
- 12:26see how God has wired their kids and homeschool more effectively?
- 12:30Wow.
- 12:31So friends, we're talking to Tina Holland back and you can find the book on Amazon.
- 12:35The forward is also written by Kathy Cook.
- 12:39So wanted to ask you about this, you know, when you were teaching, you said you'd
- 12:44have nine years?
- 12:45Nine years.
- 12:46So you must have seen some things in curriculum or things that as a Bible-believing Christian,
- 12:53whether it was history, science, biology, whatever, there were some things that you thought,
- 12:58I just have a hard time with this.
- 13:01Am I wrong?
- 13:02Did you see anything?
- 13:03Of course I did.
- 13:04I taught English as a second language.
- 13:06So I was teaching English to immigrant kids.
- 13:09And I feel like my experience was pretty different to like a mainstream teacher.
- 13:13I had first-generation Southeast Asian and Hispanic kids and their parents.
- 13:17And honestly, it was an amazing experience.
- 13:20They were wonderful people, really loved being here, wanted to 25 years ago, 30 years
- 13:25ago, they wanted to integrate into the country.
- 13:27It was just a really wonderful experience.
- 13:30And I was a little bit rogue and so I didn't use a lot of the curriculum.
- 13:34I made up my own stuff.
- 13:35That's funny.
- 13:36But I did see it because, you know, my students would come to me with their science book
- 13:40or different things from the other teachers.
- 13:42We had one Bible-believing person on staff, a science teacher, and he got written up every
- 13:48year for saying simply, evolution is not fact.
- 13:53It is a theory, but let's address other theories, and he got written up every year.
- 13:57So I did see that, and that was a huge motivation for my desire to not want my children in the
- 14:02system.
- 14:03Yeah.
- 14:04And that's, you know what, we can't emphasize that enough, friends.
- 14:05If you've got a young family, if you've got young children, there is not only a disagreement
- 14:11with the biblical worldview, there is an intolerance of Christianity, the biblical worldview,
- 14:17starting with the existence of God and creation, and you take it down, you know, marriage,
- 14:24family, gender, civil government, all these things that are biblical concepts and biblical
- 14:29truths that they are just not allowed.
- 14:33And it's far worse now than when I left.
- 14:35Oh my goodness, yeah.
- 14:36So, yeah.
- 14:37I'm even when I was in school.
- 14:38Anyway, let's, because I come from a family of teachers, both of my parents, my sisters,
- 14:42I have an uncle.
- 14:44So yeah, all educators, but this, that was 60s and 70s and 80s, and boy has unfortunately
- 14:52the education system machine.
- 14:56It's the system.
- 14:57There are many good Christian people, and otherwise not Christian, but good people teaching
- 15:02in the system.
- 15:03Sure.
- 15:04And it can either wear you out so that you leave, or it can wear you down so you give
- 15:10in.
- 15:11And I saw some of my colleagues who came at the same time, and they were Bible-believing
- 15:15Christians, and suddenly they were wishy-washy.
- 15:18Oh no.
- 15:19So yeah, it's very dangerous.
- 15:21And if that happens to adults, then how much more to children who are not grounded in
- 15:25their faith because they're children?
- 15:26Yeah.
- 15:27So let's talk about that.
- 15:30Kids are so impressionable, and you are literally pouring into them in their school age years,
- 15:36and they're learning.
- 15:37They're developing a worldview.
- 15:39Let's talk about what you say is so hard, but so important.
- 15:43Pulling older kids that have been maybe in the public schools for however many years,
- 15:47two, three, four, five, six, whatever.
- 15:50Pulling them out and homeschooling.
- 15:53Some parents don't even think that's an option.
- 15:55Talk to us about that, Tina.
- 15:56Well, it is 100% a legal option in the state of Wisconsin.
- 16:00You know, we're taping here in April.
- 16:03If a parent is like, I'm done, they can literally pull their child out today.
- 16:06Or the day before the end of the school year, it really doesn't matter.
- 16:09That varies by state law, but it's a legal option, 100% at any age, and it's a moral and
- 16:16ethical option.
- 16:17I mean, there's no reason to keep a child in if you feel compelled by the Holy Spirit
- 16:22to pull them out.
- 16:23And I would hope that that would happen, actually.
- 16:25One of the things I do and we'll talk about is consulting, homeschool consulting, and
- 16:29I talk to parents throughout Northeast Wisconsin primarily about how to get started homeschooling
- 16:34and all of the questions.
- 16:36And I talk to a lot of parents who come in and talk to me and they're like, okay, I have
- 16:40a fifth grader.
- 16:41How do we do this?
- 16:42And we walk through it.
- 16:43I have a high school junior.
- 16:45How do we do this?
- 16:46You know, how does he get a transcript and a diploma and all the things and how do I
- 16:50meld in what he had in school and all of that?
- 16:53But I can tell you one of my favorite stories is a young man and his parents I talked to
- 16:57not that long ago, professing believers, and this young man is like a football player
- 17:01size.
- 17:02So he could he could intimidate anybody, but he would stand up for bullied kids and
- 17:07he was getting bullied himself.
- 17:09And just the look on his face, he was so downtrodden and his parents could see it.
- 17:14And so that's where they came to talk to me.
- 17:16By the end of our conversation, he was smiling and happy.
- 17:19And then I talked to them a couple of weeks later and his whole demeanor and his whole
- 17:24persona had changed.
- 17:26And now he knew he could serve the Lord and he didn't have to tolerate what he was putting
- 17:30up with in the school.
- 17:31Okay.
- 17:32So let's talk about the home school loft or actually the curriculum, the database.
- 17:38Where is that at homeschoolroadmap.org?
- 17:40Correct.
- 17:41Yes.
- 17:42Let's talk about the database and then we'll go back to the loft when we wrap up.
- 17:45Go ahead.
- 17:46About 13 years ago, and this kind of, I guess ties into what you said about curriculum as
- 17:50well, about 13 years ago, I launched this database.
- 17:53It's the home school resource roadmap, homeschoolroadmap.org.
- 17:57I didn't intend to do anything of the sort.
- 18:00I was just minding my own business, homeschooling my kids, and they were like middle school age.
- 18:04And as a former public school teacher, I knew what the common core standards were.
- 18:09Dr. DuPesta and I have talked about that.
- 18:11So I'm all on board with all of that.
- 18:13I was disturbed as a taxpayer, but I thought I homeschool.
- 18:16It doesn't affect me, right?
- 18:19By 2013, a couple of big name homeschool publishers had come out saying our new version
- 18:24is aligned with common core.
- 18:25No, no.
- 18:26And yes, that sent just shockwaves through the homeschool world.
- 18:29A lot of people saying, what is this?
- 18:32What can we do about it?
- 18:33All of that.
- 18:34And people were making assumptions.
- 18:37Like, is this common core, is that common core, and making guesses?
- 18:41And you know me.
- 18:42I'm a no drama mama.
- 18:43I'm like, I don't want any of that.
- 18:44That's not actually being a good steward of the faith either.
- 18:48So famous last words, I said, somebody has to ask the publishers what they're doing.
- 18:55Okay, so that became me.
- 18:58And I thought at the time there were maybe 300 companies that I'm going to have to reach
- 19:01out to, but my girls are middle school.
- 19:04They're a little bit independent.
- 19:05I can do that.
- 19:06And fast forward now, and there's more to the database than just common core now.
- 19:12But there are over 7,400 companies on the database.
- 19:17These are all publishers of different sizes, different subject areas for different ages
- 19:22that homeschoolers can get their material.
- 19:26And I'm a little bit OCD.
- 19:28So when I got started asking my husband about this, I won't end until I know that everything
- 19:33that homeschoolers can use is on there.
- 19:37That's amazing.
- 19:38So I want to make sure you guys have the website.
- 19:40It is homeschoolroadmap.org, homeschoolroadmap.org.
- 19:46Okay.
- 19:48I just want to make sure I didn't miss anything from my notes here.
- 19:51So we've got your book.
- 19:52We talked about the road map, talked about pulling kids out that have been in the government
- 19:59schools for a while.
- 20:00And Christian parents said, you know, it's affecting their faith.
- 20:04It's affecting a lot of their home lives, so let's get them out.
- 20:07We talked about state laws.
- 20:09Let's go back to the homeschool loft, and let's bring it back to the local.
- 20:13Tell us about the homeschool loft a little bit more about that.
- 20:15Yeah.
- 20:16So when I started the homeschool resource road map, it quickly grew from just a list in
- 20:21a Facebook group to its own website, right?
- 20:24And people started to know, hey, Tina knows something about curriculum.
- 20:27Her girls are a little bit older, so I can ask her about home schooling, elementary school,
- 20:32because I have middle schoolers at this point.
- 20:34And so they say, hey, will you, can we go out to coffee and talk?
- 20:37And this was again, like 13 years ago, and I said, sure, I love talking to parents about
- 20:40this topic.
- 20:41And I was just doing that, again, minding my own business.
- 20:44I should know better.
- 20:46Even with the book, I was minding my own business.
- 20:47I didn't set out to write a book.
- 20:49I am a writer, but I didn't set out to write a book.
- 20:53And about five years ago, so our fifth anniversary officially of the homeschool loft is coming
- 20:57up on May 6th, then we're having a party.
- 21:00But May 6th, 2021 is when we started.
- 21:03A friend of mine reached out, fellow homeschooler, we'd know in each other kind of in different
- 21:08circles, but weren't friends, but just knew each other.
- 21:10And she said, my youngest is graduating.
- 21:13I want to do something for homeschoolers in this area.
- 21:16Will you do something with me?
- 21:17And that, she had a physical space at the time, and she said, let's open up something
- 21:22for homeschool consulting in this physical space and bless the homeschoolers.
- 21:27Now this was 2021.
- 21:28We did not do it because of COVID.
- 21:30But we did know that more and more families were pulling their kids because of COVID.
- 21:33So it was God's Providence and God's timing on that, right?
- 21:35Yes, timing, yeah.
- 21:36I mean, that fall of 2021 was God's and homeschool numbers had gone from 20,000, typically it
- 21:42had been at 20,000 for many years, that first fall to 32,000 in one year.
- 21:48Wow.
- 21:49So people were banging down our door.
- 21:51And the idea was, so that's when I officially started doing homeschool consulting and seminars
- 21:57and that type of thing, but I had been doing it informally for several years prior.
- 22:01But I put a name on it, we put a website on it, and we just started that process about
- 22:05five years ago.
- 22:06Okay.
- 22:07I'm just looking at some of the things you can click on.
- 22:09You got a newsletter, law, Wisconsin homeschool, this is for if you're in Wisconsin now.
- 22:16Blog posts, services, friends, calendars, there's a lot of just click on the links for the
- 22:21information there.
- 22:22There's a map.
- 22:23So what about other people that are reaching out from other states?
- 22:29Would you advise them to check their state laws because you pretty much said there's
- 22:32laws in every state.
- 22:33Yes, every homeschool law, are they that different?
- 22:37Every homeschool law is different.
- 22:38Wisconsin has one of the best in terms of parental freedom.
- 22:41How did that happen?
- 22:42Because we're kind of like a blue state, you know, maybe we were a little bit more red
- 22:46back in 1984.
- 22:47I don't know.
- 22:48Okay.
- 22:49Yes, you're right.
- 22:50But it has never been changed.
- 22:52What I have been told from my friends who were in that first generation is for about
- 22:55the first 10 years after the homeschool law passed every year, there was an attack by
- 23:00somebody in the legislator to try to add regulation and then they finally gave up because
- 23:05parents would come down to Madison and droves and fight it.
- 23:08Good.
- 23:09As well, they should have, right?
- 23:10And the same kind of process has happened in every state.
- 23:12The parents get together, they find someone to write a bill and they lobby and but depending
- 23:18on the climate in different states, they can get different things.
- 23:21So Wisconsin has broad-based freedom, there are laws.
- 23:25And so it's not like we have a free reign.
- 23:28There's accountability.
- 23:29But the accountability for believers is to the Lord and the accountability for everybody
- 23:33is, do you want to be a parent of integrity?
- 23:35You're saying you're going to do X, Y and Z, you need to do it.
- 23:38But we don't have a requirement that anybody checks us in Wisconsin, which is great.
- 23:43Other states, you have to have an evaluation once a year, you have to do standardized testing,
- 23:47you need to have the approval of the local public school district, which you can imagine.
- 23:52What?
- 23:53I mean, they do it, but grudgingly, right?
- 23:55And they just put their neck on homeschoolers.
- 23:57I have many times said, I think Pennsylvania and upstate New York at least and let's say Massachusetts
- 24:05would be wonderful places to visit, but I would never live there.
- 24:08They have the worst homeschool laws in the country, and I'm sorry for people who live there,
- 24:13but it's bad.
- 24:14Well, they're intolerant of the biblical worldviews, so it's no wonder they would
- 24:17want kids in the government schools.
- 24:18Right.
- 24:19Or even parental freedom for people who aren't Christians who homeschool, right?
- 24:22They don't believe in parental freedom.
- 24:24People in those states and other states believe that the government owns our children.
- 24:28And so they want that kind of control.
- 24:31So we mentioned biblical authority earlier, and I don't run out of time.
- 24:34I just thought about this verse, and you know what most of our audience probably is very
- 24:38familiar with Deuteronomy 6 versus 4 through 8.
- 24:42Hero, Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is one.
- 24:45You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, with all
- 24:49your might.
- 24:50These words, which I'm commanding you today, shall be on your heart.
- 24:54And then verse 7 is the big one, you shall teach them diligently to your sons, and
- 25:01shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you
- 25:07lie down, and when you rise up.
- 25:10And I don't think that leaves anything out, Tina, except for when you're eating.
- 25:13Well, and we can do that too, right?
- 25:15You can talk with your mouthful, don't talk with your mouthful.
- 25:17That is a key verse, you know, people say, where does it talk about homeschooling in the
- 25:21Bible?
- 25:22Well, it's all over the place because the word isn't in there, but of course educating
- 25:26children.
- 25:27Parents are supposed to be, and it's not just their spiritual well-being, but if their
- 25:30cognitive skills are not up to stuff, all the things you can't pour in spiritually,
- 25:33right?
- 25:34I know you've had Israel Wayne on the show, he is one of my favorite homeschool authors.
- 25:39He wrote a book, education does God have an opinion, and I don't know if you're talking
- 25:42about that, but everybody should get that because he lays out from Scripture, not just
- 25:49that verse, but verse after, verse after, verse, there's really no permission for a Christian
- 25:55to have your kids in an anti-Christian environment day in and day out.
- 25:59And parents mean well, you know, they really, really truly do.
- 26:03And there's been research by Barna that shows that 15% of kids from Christian homes who
- 26:08go to public school will come out with their faith intact, and they will be fine.
- 26:13Fifteen.
- 26:14Fifteen plus five.
- 26:15That's it.
- 26:16That means 85% of kids from Christian homes, and we see it in our culture, walk away from
- 26:20the Lord.
- 26:21So, I could not in good conscience play that roulette wheel with my kids.
- 26:26Yeah, yeah.
- 26:27And understand what's coming against kids today, it's, you've got Hollywood, you've got
- 26:32government, you've got corporations and media, social media.
- 26:38So if you do not have your kids schooled and educated at home, that's the public education
- 26:44system is just another one of those things that's going to take God out of your kids'
- 26:49lives and give them all kinds of other worldly stuff.
- 26:52We're down to the last minute, Tina, but this is an important topic.
- 26:55I'm so glad you came in today.
- 26:56Didn't go by fast.
- 26:57Oh, yeah, I'm like, wow, we're done already.
- 26:59Yeah, see, it flows.
- 27:00It goes by very fast, but friends, I just want to give their websites again real quick.
- 27:04First of all, her book, Eight Smarts for Home Schoolers, and then HomeSchoolRoadMap.org.
- 27:12And if you're in Northeast Wisconsin, you can go to homeschoolloft.com and get a hold
- 27:19of Tina if you have any questions.
- 27:21Very important topic.
- 27:22Thank you for coming in.
- 27:23I'm so glad we did this.
- 27:24Are you glad?
- 27:25I am.
- 27:26Thank you so much.
- 27:27God bless you.
