- 0:12Speaker 1: tough times, hurdles and sorts by leaning into wellness. My
- 0:17Speaker 1: name's Emily A Badi, and today I am recapping my
- 0:21Speaker 1: experience of racing the Brooklyn Mile over the weekend, coming
- 0:26Speaker 1: just short of my six minute time goal, and applying
- 0:29Speaker 1: it to a bigger picture of what we often classify
- 0:33Speaker 1: as failures. I'm a firm believer that the only people
- 0:36Speaker 1: who truly fail are those that don't try it all.
- 0:39Speaker 1: And in today's hurdle moment, I dig into the idea
- 0:42Speaker 1: that failure happens each and every single.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Time to teach us something great.

- 1:10Speaker 1: I've been getting a lot of inquiries from you guys
- 1:12Speaker 1: about fall marathon training.
- 1:14Speaker 2: As you know, I'm a certified runt coach. So if
- 1:16Speaker 2: you're looking for some.

- 1:22Speaker 1: at that email address.
- 1:23Speaker 2: I am more than happy to give you a helping hand.
- 1:26Speaker 1: It's my favorite time of the year and with that,
- 1:30Speaker 1: let's get to hurdling. Sunday was pretty tough for me,
- 1:45Speaker 1: not just because I ran a mile in six minutes
- 1:48Speaker 1: and seven seconds and that's hard, but because.
- 1:51Speaker 2: It was emotionally exhausting.
- 1:54Speaker 1: The thing about the goals that we often set for
- 1:56Speaker 1: ourselves is that there's something that takes time for us
- 1:58Speaker 1: to work up to. I'd been training for the better
- 2:01Speaker 1: part of almost three months for this past Sunday. There
- 2:05Speaker 1: were early mornings at the track in the Lower East
- 2:07Speaker 1: Side that took me almost an hour to get to
- 2:10Speaker 1: by bus and then city bike and then walking. There
- 2:13Speaker 1: were early nights that I skipped wine and dinners and
- 2:15Speaker 1: catching up with friends just because I wanted to be
- 2:17Speaker 1: in my bed early enough to get up the next
- 2:20Speaker 1: day and go work out. So as I crossed the
- 2:23Speaker 1: finish line, seeing that six minute, seven second time above me.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I felt pretty defeated.
- 2:29Speaker 1: I was angry and frustrated, and it was hard because
- 2:33Speaker 1: there was nothing I could do about it. I felt
- 2:35Speaker 1: as though I had let myself down. I walked away
- 2:38Speaker 1: from the finish line directly to one of my good
- 2:40Speaker 1: friends and I looked at him and I almost wanted
- 2:43Speaker 1: to completely just break down in tears. He looked back
- 2:46Speaker 1: at me, asked me if I needed water, and then
- 2:49Speaker 1: as we were walking into a CBS, he said, I
- 2:52Speaker 1: know you're upset right now, and you deserve that, but
- 2:55Speaker 1: you know that this is still a win.
- 2:58Speaker 2: And he was right, and I did.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I did.
- 3:01Speaker 2: This isn't the first time in my life that I
- 3:03Speaker 2: have quote unquote failed, but.
- 3:04Speaker 1: It's the first time in a long time where I
- 3:07Speaker 1: was reminded of how valuable failing can be. Plenty of times,
- 3:12Speaker 1: every single day, something goes wrong. Maybe you've invested your
- 3:17Speaker 1: time in someone who doesn't offer you the same courtesy,
- 3:19Speaker 1: or you've hit a speed bump at the office on
- 3:21Speaker 1: a project that goes south, or a friend ditches you
- 3:24Speaker 1: for a show or workout class that you were really
- 3:27Speaker 1: looking forward to. Failures, you know, they come in all
- 3:30Speaker 1: different shapes and sizes and magnitudes and instances and you
- 3:33Speaker 1: name it. The most valuable lesson that failure has taught
- 3:37Speaker 1: me is that giving up is never an option. For
- 3:40Speaker 1: every failure that happens, there's an alternative course of action.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Let me say that one more time. For every failure
- 3:46Speaker 1: that happens, there is an alternative course of action. If
- 3:50Speaker 1: you were to give up on a goal just because
- 3:52Speaker 1: of a little bitty speed bump, then maybe you need
- 3:56Speaker 1: to think about how important that goal was to you
- 3:57Speaker 1: in the first place. When we fail, we are presented
- 4:01Speaker 1: with an opportunity to learn and then pivot. So what
- 4:06Speaker 1: if we fall just shy of our goals? Right when
- 4:08Speaker 1: that happens, we then have the chance to get back
- 4:10Speaker 1: up and do something different. This is your opportunity to
- 4:15Speaker 1: be courageous, and how great is that to stand tall,
- 4:19Speaker 1: to home in on exactly where things may have gone wrong,
- 4:22Speaker 1: and then refocus your energy on the things you can
- 4:24Speaker 1: control for the next time. Just because you accept a
- 4:28Speaker 1: failure does not mean you can't keep trying. For me,
- 4:33Speaker 1: that means slightly signing up for another race. It also
- 4:37Speaker 1: means continuing to get comfortable with the uncomfortable. It means
- 4:40Speaker 1: being gracious and kind to myself in the wake of
- 4:43Speaker 1: things not going as planned, and that can feel super difficult.
- 4:47Speaker 1: It also means being proud of the steps and sacrifices
- 4:50Speaker 1: those early mornings, those early nights, the opportunity costs, the
- 4:55Speaker 1: things that have gotten me to the point where I
- 4:56Speaker 1: have the opportunity to fail in the first place. So
- 5:00Speaker 1: do me this favor. Write down your big goal, give
- 5:05Speaker 1: it an actionable deadline, Anticipate the hurdles that may stand
- 5:08Speaker 1: in your way, and think actively about what you have
- 5:11Speaker 1: control over that can help you conquer what's in your path.
- 5:14Speaker 1: It's gonna take some time, that's okay. Then do me
- 5:18Speaker 1: a solid and share it with me, whether that's on
- 5:21Speaker 1: Instagram or over email or whatever you feel comfortable with. Together,
- 5:26Speaker 1: let's hold each other accountable for these big goals. Let's
- 5:29Speaker 1: hold each other accountable for what comes next. For me,
- 5:33Speaker 1: I'm still pushing for that sub six minute mile, but
- 5:35Speaker 1: I've got a few other things on my radar that
- 5:37Speaker 1: I promise I'll let you in on soon. Man. I
- 5:41Speaker 1: feel like things are about to get spicy, let's get
- 5:43Speaker 1: after it. Hurdler's another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next times.
