- 0:01In order to know something, we need to utilize the tools and
- 0:05methods appropriate to whatever form or energetic action we are
- 0:10trying to know. Those things which rely on
- 0:14emotion, for instance, cannot be fully understood by the logical
- 0:18intellect. Similarly, the strict step by
- 0:22step process of mathematics is not something that the vital
- 0:25nature or the emotions in general can comprehend.
- 0:30This is actually one serious cause of misunderstanding
- 0:33between people as they try to communicate with one another
- 0:37from vastly different perspectives and starting
- 0:40points. How much more difficult it is,
- 0:44therefore, to understand an entirely different order of
- 0:47consciousness using powers and methods proper to a preceding
- 0:52order. The logical intellect, while it
- 0:55has its powerful capacities and benefits in its own field of
- 0:59action, is not competent to judge spiritual experience or
- 1:05the expression of spiritual force in action.
- 1:08This implies that the normal standards of determining what is
- 1:12valid or real used by the mind are unable to make a similar
- 1:17judgment. The spiritual consciousness can
- 1:21only be understood by someone who is capable of experiencing
- 1:25that consciousness, who has the receptivity and intuitive
- 1:29understanding needed to comprehend its action.
- 1:33The mind may be able to infer the existence of a spiritual
- 1:37force through various effects that it cannot otherwise
- 1:41explain, particularly if these effects are reported by those
- 1:45who actually have experienced the spiritual consciousness
- 1:49directly, and thus a correlation can be established.
- 1:55The failure of the mind to comprehend spiritual experience
- 1:59with the tools of analysis, logic and reason leads many who
- 2:04are rooted in the consciousness of the external body, life mind
- 2:08complex to simply deny the existence of the spiritual
- 2:13reality or to treat it as some kind of result of the play of
- 2:18the material elements and powers that are the first basis of the
- 2:21material life. It is impossible to convince
- 2:25someone who has not had the actual experience and who
- 2:30demands proof of the existence or action of the spiritual
- 2:34consciousness, just as it is equally impossible to convince
- 2:39someone who has never experienced concentrated thought
- 2:42that such a power of insight and action may actually exist.
- 2:47Many things that are the result of mental efforts look simply
- 2:50like miracles to those who do not have the current capacity
- 2:55for serious, organized, systematic thought and the
- 2:59results that come from that process.
- 3:02Similarly, those with the power of thought but without spiritual
- 3:07insight or experience may tend to deny or explain away
- 3:12spiritual forces at work. When the being is ready, the
- 3:16capacity for the next phase of development of consciousness
- 3:20opens up on its own and at that time, without argument or
- 3:24denial, the understanding comes. Sri Aurobindo observes quote.
- 3:32Even in ordinary non spiritual things, the action of invisible
- 3:36or subjective forces is open to doubt and discussion in which
- 3:41there could be no material certitude, while the spiritual
- 3:46force is invisible in itself and also invisible in its action.
- 3:52So it is idle to try to prove that such and such a result was
- 3:56the effect of spiritual force. Each must form his own idea
- 4:01about that, for if it is accepted, it cannot be as a
- 4:05result of proof and argument, but only as a result of
- 4:09experience of faith, or of that insight into the deeper heart or
- 4:15the deeper intelligence which looks behind appearances and
- 4:19sees what is behind them. The spiritual consciousness does
- 4:24not claim in that way. It can state the truth about
- 4:28itself, but not fight for a personal acceptance.
- 4:32A general and impersonal truth about spiritual force is another
- 4:36matter, but I doubt whether the time has come for it or whether
- 4:41it could be understood by mere reasoning, intelligence, and
- 4:46quote reference. Srioro Bindo and the mother, The
