- 0:00Eric: This podcast was created by fans or fans and is not affiliated with or sponsored by Hallmark or the Hallmark channel.
- 0:09Eric: This is Eric.
- 0:12Sydney: And this is Sydney.
- 0:14Eric: And this is Hallmark Mysteries and more.
- 0:23Sydney: Woo-woo-woo-woo-woo.
- 0:27Sydney: Picture it, eric it is a dark and dreary day.
- 0:31Sydney: It begins to mist a bit.
- 0:34Sydney: You are taking your dog for a walk and you pass by that one house, that house that you hate to walk by.
- 0:42Sydney: It's shabby and not in the chic way, and it always looks like someone is peeking from behind a curtain, although you know it's been empty for decades.
- 0:52Sydney: This time you definitely see a curtain move, but before you can process it, there's a distant boom of thunder and your dog takes off running.
- 1:01Sydney: Are you in the spooky mood yet, eric?
- 1:07Eric: I don't know.
- 1:07Eric: I think I am chasing after my dog and I even have a spooky Halloween dog, since he's a tripod with only three legs, right there you go, he's off running.
- 1:18Eric: Yeah, I am not about the bravery.
- 1:20Eric: I will fully admit I am cowardously hightailing it out of there.
- 1:25Eric: Getting ready to hit my couch to watch a Halloween movie, which is the whole discussion we're going to have today, is, for those of you who may not be into the horror flicks on Halloween, what are some alternatives?
- 1:43Eric: And Sydney and I are each going to share three of our favorite spooky and I use spooky, at least for me, quite broadly.
- 1:55Eric: Maybe that may be good for Halloween.
- 1:58Eric: Are you ready to roll?
- 2:02Eric: Ready as ever, but I think what I do is, as you get ready, to talk about our cocktails and get us going, I should have a bowl of my Halloween blueberries, which I why everyone does their pumpkin spice latte.
- 2:17Eric: I have a box of the pumpkin spice latte and I have a box of the pumpkin spice latte and the whole is my season for my blueberries.
- 2:27Sydney: I have boxes upon box I go.
- 2:29Sydney: When it first appears, I literally fill up the shopping cart with as many blueberries as I can.
- 2:34Sydney: He's got to have those blueberries, yes, because that's what a ghost would have.
- 2:40Sydney: So our signature cocktail for this spooky episode.
- 2:46Sydney: The ingredients are cinnamon and sugar, caramel infused vodka, apple decor and, of course, apple cider.
- 2:55Sydney: And you'll want like a cinnamon stick and an apple slice for garnish.
- 2:59Sydney: You know, you put the cinnamon sugar around the brim and then you mix up the vodka, liquor cider shake, pour into a glass and you garnish it with that cinnamon stick and apple slice.
- 3:12Sydney: And you are all about that fall life when it comes.
- 3:18Eric: I'm good to me.
- 3:20Sydney: Yes, oh, my gosh, eric.
- 3:22Sydney: I thought it would be fun to ask you some rapid fire Halloween themed questions to start.
- 3:30Sydney: So just tell me like what comes to your mind that's a dangerous game to play, but All right, okay, what is your favorite Halloween candy?
- 3:45Eric: Oh, easy dots.
- 3:47Sydney: Dots Okay, mine's free Souspena butter cups.
- 3:50Eric: Those are fantastic.
- 3:53Sydney: What is.
- 3:54Sydney: And also let me say they're very generous this time of year, like when, if you get like the decent size ones, those are yummy.
- 4:00Sydney: But what is your favorite Halloween villain?
- 4:05Sydney: Like from anything like?
- 4:08Eric: villain, villain villain.
- 4:10Eric: I think he said villain.
- 4:12Eric: I'm like, what alternative holiday?
- 4:14Eric: I'll just slide Valentine's.
- 4:16Sydney: Day in October 30.
- 4:19Eric: Oh, my Halloween villain.
- 4:20Eric: Hmm, tough, tough question.
- 4:25Eric: I'm going to go with the, the, the realtor, and the woman, the wife, the wife in Beetlejuice, who are trying to redo the house.
- 4:46Sydney: Oh my gosh, I was just about to say beetle juice.
- 4:50Sydney: Yeah, because you love to hate him Like he is kind of a villain about the way he treats those poor people who are newly deceased.
- 5:03Eric: But wait, you're going, you're doing Beetlejuice too.
- 5:06Sydney: Yeah, that was my.
- 5:07Sydney: That's my favorite Halloween villain is Beetlejuice.
- 5:10Eric: There we go, we.
- 5:11Eric: I like to say I just found that the wife trying to redo and tear down the house and everything with the, with the realtor, to be far worse than Beetlejuice.
- 5:21Sydney: Yes, I think you're looking for it in the actual villain sense and I'm looking in it like it's the really fun villain Like okay, but we just funny how we picked the same movie from whatever 1986 or whenever that was.
- 5:35Sydney: It's such a great movie.
- 5:37Sydney: So what was your favorite Halloween costume growing up?
- 5:45Eric: Well, here's a funny story about that.
- 5:46Eric: So growing up?
- 5:48Eric: No way, it's not appropriate for this.
- 5:50Eric: I shouldn't do this.
- 5:51Eric: We'll get canceled.
- 5:52Sydney: Okay.
- 5:54Eric: So what I'll just go move on is rather than going growing up, I'm going to go with after.
- 6:01Eric: When I like late college and post college.
- 6:06Eric: I was known for being able to come up with the costume for under five bucks.
- 6:12Eric: So I was before crazy current inflation.
- 6:15Eric: So one year I like was a carrot, where I just went and got a piece of orange, whatever poster board, cut it in a triangle and bought a thing of carrots that I tied on my head.
- 6:28Eric: Another time was was eyeball, where I just got a big round circle and colored in an eyeball.
- 6:35Eric: So these were about low rent of costumes as humanly possible.
- 6:42Eric: It sort of became a thing.
- 6:44Eric: I had a.
- 6:44Eric: I had a stretch for about six years.
- 6:47Eric: I really like Halloween.
- 6:49Eric: Halloween is.
- 6:49Eric: It's a good it's understandable.
- 6:53Sydney: It is a good holiday.
- 6:54Sydney: I was a, my favorite was like three, I don't, it was more like 10 years ago, but I was the crafting queen and I took, like this, existing dress up.
- 7:09Sydney: Yeah, I know, and I took this existing dress and I put all sorts of different types of tissue paper attached to it and then I did like a crown where I said and then I had these giant gold scissors, nice, like they were fake, they were paper mache, but they were giant and I just walked around, actually was at a party that year and I won the costume competition, which I never win, that stuff, oh that is awesome.
- 7:39Eric: So years ago when my son was little, we went to the costume shop because once again with your kids, you spend way too much money on costumes for them and he went and he picked out this ear costume and it was awesome.
- 7:53Eric: It had a whole ear head that would go over like a hood.
- 7:56Eric: He absolutely just loved it and he was like you know, I can't wait for Halloween, can't wait for Halloween.
- 8:00Eric: And then when Halloween came he would not put it on.
- 8:04Eric: It was the forcing him to put it on so we could get some pictures, and every picture is him literally balling and it is what happened.
- 8:15Eric: He just decided he did not want anything to do with E or and we're like we spent, did you ask?
- 8:21Eric: Him.
- 8:22Eric: He was like two and a half years old.
- 8:24Eric: Oh yeah, it's like little.
- 8:27Eric: So we're like, yeah, basically forcing our, torturing our kid into this and four pictures, of which, like I said, they're all unusable because it looks like we beat the kid.
- 8:38Eric: Yeah, I was like there.
- 8:44Sydney: I think it's a rite of passage when you're a kid if your parent doesn't like dress you in something that you absolutely hate, because when I was one, they dressed me like a clown and like I don't know why clowns were a thing, by the way, but anyways they.
- 9:02Sydney: And then they would bring me and they would like show me, me in the mirror, and I'd start screening Because I didn't want to see exactly People thinking, anyways, okay, what's your favorite Halloween party song?
- 9:18Eric: Party song.
- 9:19Eric: Yeah, are you a monster masher or say it's kind of, I think you just have to go.
- 9:24Eric: You know what?
- 9:25Eric: I'm good, I'm gonna do a little twist on.
- 9:27Eric: I'm going to go with thriller Michael Jackson.
- 9:31Sydney: Oh, that is perfect, I'm a Oingo Boingo dead man's party.
- 9:37Eric: So we're doing, we're staying in the 80s with all this.
- 9:41Sydney: I think it was probably like one of the more prominent Halloween.
- 9:44Sydney: Yeah, that's right.
- 9:49Eric: I'm an 80s guy, so that's must be why I like it so much.
- 9:52Sydney: There you go and you can keep going on your 80s role.
- 9:55Sydney: What's your favorite Halloween movie?
- 9:57Sydney: Like actual Halloween themed.
- 10:02Eric: Oh yes, if we're so well, does that take away from our list today?
- 10:13Sydney: Could, it make this list today was like, I feel like more Halloween thriller it has witches, it has ghosts, it has something well, I Will go then with Beetlejuice.
- 10:28Sydney: Okay, I'm gonna go with practical magic I.
- 10:33Eric: Was thinking yeah, there's the practical magic and there's what three quarters of the world would probably say hocus pocus, but oh, yes.
- 10:39Eric: But who?
- 10:41Sydney: doesn't love a witch.
- 10:42Eric: I'm going, I'm going yeah, practical magic was a good one.
- 10:45Eric: In fact, that was one that I considered for my movies, for oh Okay.
- 10:52Sydney: well, speaking of movies tonight, eric, do you want to kick us off with what your first pick is?
- 11:00Eric: Well, my first one.
- 11:01Eric: Maybe a little too scary for most people, so you're gonna have to be prepared.
- 11:07Eric: But it is Teen Witch, and this one stars Robin lively, dan Gootie a, gootie a, and it's from the 80s, 1989.
- 11:19Eric: Oh, you familiar with it.
- 11:20Eric: They were still playing on Disney Channel when I was growing up, so so Teen Witch, it's about as quintessential 80s as you can get right down to the music whenever they're like.
- 11:34Eric: There's the first of the theme and it's got the jazz.
- 11:39Eric: You know the saxophone always comes into which is a full-out 80s thing.
- 11:44Eric: And then whenever they get into anything of the romance, of course the jet or the saxophone Comes right back in.
- 11:51Eric: It's got the good-looking guy in there who drives the convertible.
- 11:55Eric: Of course it's got the dance scenes where in their Lea Tards the girls break into their Dance in the, in the gym, in the locker room.
- 12:05Eric: It's.
- 12:06Eric: I say it's pretty much.
- 12:09Eric: It Probably like the kids stay will say it's ironic, because it's just a movie that's so bad that it's good.
- 12:17Eric: Originally was supposed to be the.
- 12:20Eric: You know, teen Wolf was all popular, so I gotta make a movie now with a woman.
- 12:24Eric: So it's supposed to be the counterpart to it and you know it turned into just a whole thing of its own.
- 12:31Eric: So the basic premise is the nerdy girl with her nerdy friend is, you know, overlooked by everyone, made fun of by all the popular people.
- 12:41Eric: So she wants to be, you know, popular.
- 12:43Eric: She gets the ability, through a magical amulet, to to be a witch and she's apparently been around since the beginning of time as this way.
- 12:55Eric: Yeah, she gets her amulet, but then she gets it.
- 12:57Eric: Wishes for all the good stuff.
- 12:59Eric: She gets the good-looking guy, but her friend, of course, gets pushed to the side as she becomes the most popular girl in school and she decides you know what at the end, surprise, surprise, it's not all worth it and wants just to be her good old self.
- 13:16Eric: But it was just.
- 13:19Eric: This movie is just super cute.
- 13:21Eric: It's got a whole bunch of other things, like I say, in addition to being that just pure 80s and, yes, it's not going to Get any.
- 13:30Sydney: Our ratings is probably straight up PG, but one of the little things to note is her dad is played by Dick Sargent, who was Darren on bewitched, so going way back in time.
- 13:45Eric: So that's like a little nod I don't know if that's like, far as I know, that's the only other thing he's ever been in other than bewitched.
- 13:53Eric: Yeah, I guess I, it was.
- 13:55Eric: Just, you know, when you watch the movie, you just get your fill of, once again, the saxophone Aquanet, because that hair, it is high.
- 14:07Eric: It also you have you get all that fashion with, with the dudes Going with their.
- 14:15Eric: You know they're, they're, they're tank tops.
- 14:17Eric: You have the women with their big belts and shoulder pads.
- 14:19Eric: You got definitely get your share of mullets.
- 14:23Eric: So you know what's not, whether intentional or not, yeah, I mean it was the thing I had.
- 14:31Eric: I don't know if I really had a mullet per se, but I definitely.
- 14:34Eric: All right, you know, let's see what movie was it?
- 14:42Eric: Oh Boy, the guy Patrick Swayze, when he had his long hair is it Roadhouse?
- 14:53Sydney: Yeah, Roadhouse that was gosh.
- 14:55Sydney: They play that like every weekend.
- 14:59Eric: I Like this on again.
- 15:01Eric: I had like that's who apparently back in the day I looked like it was Patrick Swayze and but I had I had the Roadhouse Patrick Swayze haircut.
- 15:12Eric: so yeah, that's the other thing, a little little interesting thing about this is um the clock in the beginning, I believe, is the same clock from back to the future.
- 15:24Eric: The house is the same.
- 15:25Eric: I mentioned thriller.
- 15:25Eric: It's the same house from the vid, the video there.
- 15:31Eric: So we got a little bit of A Pop culture there.
- 15:35Eric: And then the other thing is this was pretty much One of the very first is I'm making fun.
- 15:41Eric: I should not really make fun of it because, like I said, I think it's it's just a really fun watch, especially for nostalgia.
- 15:49Eric: But it's like the first movie when rap was really sort of Engrained in the teen for the teens, you know not to be in this urban.
- 16:01Eric: Urban thing where it was just the suburbia teens were all getting into their rap.
- 16:06Eric: So yeah, a little fun, little fun thing there so no, that's that Top that is very hot right now.
- 16:15Sydney: It's it's pretty much.
- 16:16Sydney: I feel like I see everyone posting about it either on Instagram or tiktok or you know.
- 16:22Sydney: Everyone wants to duplicate it, and I think I just saw her interviewed about it and you know how it became such a hit.
- 16:33Eric: But it's because it's just a fun one and it's got, it's got a witch.
- 16:37Eric: So there we go.
- 16:37Eric: Yeah, something to watch on Halloween.
- 16:40Eric: Yes, what about you?
- 16:41Eric: What's?
- 16:41Eric: Your first one.
- 16:44Eric: Okay, eric, picture it, I'm taking you back to 2000.
- 16:51Sydney: This movie stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford.
- 16:55Eric: Oh, I don't know where you're going now Okay, I thought you're going, which is of each.
- 17:00Sydney: Whip Eastwick.
- 17:00Sydney: No, that's the 80s.
- 17:01Sydney: Directed by Robert Zemeckis.
- 17:08Sydney: He did Death.
- 17:10Sydney: Becomes Her right and the music is composed by Alan Sylvester and I'm shouting this out because he did the music for practical magic and everybody loves that song this time of year, the little opening credit song, but this is what lies beneath.
- 17:26Eric: I've never seen it Okay.
- 17:32Sydney: So Michelle Pfeiffer plays the wife of a university research scientist who is played by Harrison Ford and she believes her lakeside Vermont home which, by the way, could have fooled me.
- 17:41Sydney: I feel like the set design was done by Nancy Myers, but it's not if it's like if Nancy Myers did a spooky thriller, but she did it.
- 17:49Sydney: Anyways, the lakeside Vermont home is haunted by a ghost or that she's losing her mind.
- 17:56Sydney: So I think this is PG 13.
- 17:58Sydney: It definitely doesn't seem like it would be our, but there's a lot of like mysterious elements to it and it does give off the spooky vibe.
- 18:12Sydney: It's a fall themed movie, so you get some really great foliage, yeah, from Vermont no less, which is and you get kind of like this dark but Also it's.
- 18:28Sydney: It's just.
- 18:29Sydney: It's kind of like there's a dichotomy because there's darkness to it, but also this is filmed in like a really beautiful, like farmhouse looking house, so I think it's just the right level of thriller for people.
- 18:45Sydney: It's not going to keep you up at night.
- 18:50Eric: Is it really haunted?
- 18:53Sydney: I can't give this away.
- 18:54Eric: Oh, that's a spoiler.
- 18:56Sydney: Yeah, I can't, because I feel like if I do like, it just won't do it justice, like you really do have to see the movie.
- 19:04Sydney: It's a good movie and you probably would recognize some of the other people in it.
- 19:09Sydney: They were all kind of popular around that time period.
- 19:13Sydney: But it just has this like hold over me since I saw it but and I saw it when I was like 13.
- 19:22Sydney: So it was like a couple of years after it came out.
- 19:29Eric: Was it age appropriate for 13?
- 19:30Eric: You know, were you seeing it a little earlier than you should have?
- 19:33Sydney: Well, I guess it's just.
- 19:34Eric: PG-13.
- 19:37Sydney: Yeah, it's probably PG-13.
- 19:38Sydney: It did spook me, like there's a couple of times where you've got to be like, oh, you know, but like, not in the like oh, there's some guy wearing a pig mask, cause it's jumping out.
- 19:50Sydney: Like it's more thought provoking because there's this mystery element to it, like why is this happening?
- 19:57Sydney: And you're kind of trying to figure out why is this happening and you're also trying to figure out is she crazy or is this really happening?
- 20:06Sydney: So I just I highly recommend that one.
- 20:10Sydney: I won't be able to give a lot away because I just feel like it takes away from you know, too much of the plot, but I think that if you're looking for something that's mysterious, that's a thriller that has just the right amount of false spookiness to it, this is definitely got to be on your list.
- 20:30Eric: So All right, so what?
- 20:33Sydney: about you.
- 20:34Eric: So one of the interesting things about me is we kind of alluded to it earlier I don't do horror movies.
- 20:39Eric: My wife loves horror movies, so I like paranormal activity and those kind of movies.
- 20:47Eric: Halloween and Blair Witch Project, All the what is it?
- 20:56Sydney: Oh, Blair Witch.
- 20:57Eric: Us or something like that.
- 20:59Sydney: Oh yeah, I just stay with them.
- 21:01Eric: And I especially don't like creepy kids.
- 21:04Eric: Creepy kids, just freak me out.
- 21:07Sydney: Children of the corn really gotcha huh, never saw it don't want to see it.
- 21:12Eric: But every year in Halloween we do have a concession where we watch a scary movie, but she tames it down for me.
- 21:21Eric: So, like now, it's all relative and it's kind of a little like the list.
- 21:25Eric: Like I remember one year we watched Alien and but then there's some other ones that are mildly.
- 21:33Eric: There's something like Netflix Halloween movies that are kind of scary but kind of comedy as well.
- 21:44Eric: There's like Scream, which is sure it's a horror movie but it's also a comedy.
- 21:49Eric: So I've done the Scream, but so that's our big thing.
- 21:53Eric: It's always a big negotiation because she's trying to get me to see something a little creepier and I'm trying to get a little more Teen Witch right.
- 22:00Eric: So we always negotiate, so that's coming up.
- 22:04Eric: So this list is perfect timing for us.
- 22:07Eric: But I am going to go probably to the one movie there's well, there's two movies that literally scared the bejesus out of me and to this day for my childhood haunt me and I really need to be bringing up in therapy.
- 22:28Eric: Oh, the movie is Jaws and I have this irrational fear of sharks, and part of the reason is because my parents, when I was under 10 years old, are having me watch these movies way too early.
- 22:42Eric: But when you grew up as a little kid in the 70s, parenting was just very different.
- 22:49Eric: There they would make their cocktail and whatever they were watching there, I was watching it with them.
- 22:55Eric: But the movie I'm going to talk about also because it sort of coincides with the real life incident, and this movie is the Birds by Alfred Hitchcock.
- 23:08Sydney: Oh my.
- 23:11Eric: And it starts with a story when I was a little kid.
- 23:14Eric: And when I was little I lived in this rural Canadian little town.
- 23:20Eric: It's called Amherstburg.
- 23:22Eric: It's sort of on the outskirts of Amherstburg, right on Lake Erie.
- 23:25Eric: It was a dirt road.
- 23:27Eric: Our front yard essentially was a forest.
- 23:30Eric: My brother hunted and would just walk out the front door to go hunting.
- 23:34Eric: And our neighbor, who is like the neighbors across the street, is actually I don't know 150 yards away and it's kind of woodsy there down the street.
- 23:46Eric: Our other neighbor was Gar-Duby and he drove a backhoe and that was his actually primary transportation.
- 23:54Eric: So this was a rural Canada environment that I grew up in and one day the nearest stop sign was a mile away, kind of thing, and the bus would just drop you off there and you'd have to walk home from there.
- 24:12Eric: And one day when I was little I was probably five or six years old my brother and I, my parents, were nowhere to be found and we were locked out of the house and so we're in the front yard and there's a picnic table there and all of a sudden this Blue Jay started dive, bombing us and literally it was trying to peck us in the head and we're like my brother.
- 24:40Eric: He's five years older, so he's a little bit, you know, he's 10.
- 24:44Eric: But the two of us like running around the yard as this bird's just attacking us literally crazy, and we end up hiding underneath the picnic table until you know, for me at the time it seemed probably like it was about four and a half days before my mom got home, but whatever, it was probably 20 minutes or something like that, I don't know, but it was long enough.
- 25:03Eric: Where we are hiding, you know, bundled together, trying to, you know, stay alive because of this angry Blue Jay.
- 25:13Eric: So I've always had this bird thing.
- 25:17Eric: And then I see birds, probably once again, when I was eight years old, so still traumatized.
- 25:24Eric: And you know, you look at it now in the special effects because this is what from 1950s, where is it?
- 25:31Eric: 1963.
- 25:33Eric: And the special effects are by no means like.
- 25:36Eric: You look at it, you know, through the lens of today's.
- 25:38Eric: There, yes, the birds are not real, but the concept of it, of these birds overtaking the town and attacking people and relentlessly coming in through your window and smashing on there, coming down the fireplace, it is just a fear that I actually live with.
- 25:59Eric: I'll be walking the dogs, as we were talking earlier and I see the line, the electricity line, whatever, and there's 50 birds up there, I get freaked out.
- 26:13Eric: One night recently we had these hawks that have come into our neighborhood, which is kind of crazy because I live in basically downtown Phoenix, it's not.
- 26:23Sydney: But you got some good small birds for feeding.
- 26:25Eric: But we had these three hawks and one night I go to walk out and it's right at dusk and they're just sitting on the telephone pole right outside our gate and they're just looking at me and they're like, whatever hawk noise make, arg, arg.
- 26:42Eric: Well, I don't even know what that is.
- 26:43Eric: That's like a dog hawk, I don't know.
- 26:45Eric: But I am sitting there with my little.
- 26:47Eric: You know, I have this little mutt who's a Cocker Spaniel mix type dog.
- 26:51Eric: You know, he's 19 pounds and I'm thinking these hawks are going to come down.
- 26:55Eric: One of them is going to be this assault on us, that's together.
- 26:59Eric: Like I am convinced one of them is going to like, go poke me in the eye so the other one can go grab my dog and off it goes.
- 27:08Eric: And I like call my wife and fear, like, oh no, the hawks are off to get me.
- 27:14Eric: And so, yeah, I have this big fear.
- 27:17Sydney: And your wife is like oh my God.
- 27:19Eric: She does not just not have the same fear I do.
- 27:22Eric: But so this whole movie, though, it's just relentless of birds coming again and again, and it doesn't matter where you go.
- 27:29Eric: They're going to come in and they're going to just peck you until you die.
- 27:32Eric: Hundreds and hundreds of crows, or you sit there and you look out the window and they've taken over the playground.
- 27:38Eric: It just to this day creeps me out and I just don't like birds.
- 27:43Eric: People who have birds as pets, I don't get it.
- 27:46Eric: I just I don't feel sympathy for birds.
- 27:48Eric: when you know bad things happen to them, it's just oh, I can't.
- 27:52Eric: I know, I know it's near them.
- 27:55Eric: I can't help it.
- 27:57Eric: They're out to get me.
- 27:59Sydney: So, somehow you've made it this far, I know.
- 28:02Eric: You wait.
- 28:03Eric: When we go to have our Thanksgiving episode, you'll be waiting for me, like where is he?
- 28:08Eric: He's not logging on, and you'll find out.
- 28:10Sydney: My wife will call you and go.
- 28:11Eric: Yeah, the turkey took him out, so but no, our footage cock the birds.
- 28:17Eric: I mean Alfred Hitchcock, just in general I'm a huge fan of his.
- 28:21Eric: I think he just, you know, when we talk to Ron Oliver, he's used him as the you know, the master of mystery and just completely changing the genre and I have to agree, I love all his movies.
- 28:37Eric: The suspense Like that's the kind of scary sort of you know north by northwest or you know rear window, that this crazy suspense and yeah, it's older and you look at it now and you find it a little bit corny in some ways, but it doesn't matter to me it holds up and but birds is just a pure horror movie.
- 29:00Sydney: Yeah, okay, I think a lot of people agreed with you in the sixties, 60, 70s eight.
- 29:07Eric: Well, yeah, I was born in the 60s, so 60, 70s, 80s, 90s, odds, 10s, 20s.
- 29:15Sydney: So yes still this day.
- 29:16Sydney: All right.
- 29:19Sydney: Well, where are you going to go?
- 29:20Eric: Now, I've got, I've got, I've got to.
- 29:22Eric: I need you to talk.
- 29:23Sydney: I can settle down.
- 29:24Eric: Yes, I'm excited.
- 29:26Eric: Okay, right now.
- 29:27Sydney: Okay, okay, we're moving back in time from the sixties.
- 29:32Sydney: Actually, we're going to 1955.
- 29:35Sydney: This movie stars Vera Clousseau, simone Signore and Paul Maurice, and it was directed by Henri Georges Clousseau.
- 29:46Sydney: And if you know by these names, you're going to know it's a French movie.
- 29:49Sydney: It's called Diabolique, which Diabolique yes.
- 29:57Sydney: Okay.
- 29:58Sydney: So in this classic of French suspense, the cruel and abusive headmaster of a boarding school, michel de la Salle, who's played by Paul, becomes the target of a murder plot hatched by an unlikely duo, his meek wife and the mistress he blazingly flaunts.
- 30:19Sydney: The women, brought together by their mutual hatred of this man, pull off the crime but become increasingly unhinged by a series of odd occurrences after de la Salle's corpse mysteriously disappears.
- 30:34Sydney: So I watched this movie initially because I was in French class in high school and I was looking for an interesting movie to watch, and I have to say it was really good.
- 30:50Eric: I think they remade it American version.
- 30:54Sydney: Yeah, maybe they did, I don't.
- 30:55Sydney: I don't know.
- 30:56Sydney: I haven't found an American version and it's possible because it was so good.
- 31:01Sydney: It does definitely throw a Hitchcock feel and if you can get past the fact that it's black and white and that you're going to have to read some subtitles, then this is definitely a good watch for you, because it has a lot going, for it has these women who you can't understand why they're coming together, and their friends, but then this man who is so dislikable and you can understand why you would hate him and you would want them to commit this crime.
- 31:36Sydney: And then, but the guilt, the, almost the, the third party to this whole crime is guilt and how it eats away at you.
- 31:47Sydney: And then, when, and then you don't know if, like, these odd occurrences are happening because you feel this unhinged guilt or because something really is happening, something's coming back to life, or it has just this really unique kind of concept to it that is not really.
- 32:13Sydney: There's nothing taken away by the fact that you're going to have to read some subtitles, like you'll still be freaked out by the whole thing, but in a good way, like not in a.
- 32:24Sydney: You know, this is not cheesy, this is not like gore.
- 32:30Sydney: This is not anything that'll keep you up at night, but it's a really good mystery.
- 32:35Sydney: It's really got highly recommend, because I don't know anyone in high like saying that you watch this in high school French or for high school French class and that you actually enjoyed it and you watch it probably once every year.
- 32:51Sydney: I think that speaks for.
- 32:55Eric: I definitely have heard of it and it's been on that list to watch it because it's considered a classic.
- 33:01Eric: So and like I say, I think either that or there's other ones that have been spun off of the general plot of it, that's you know, inspired by an Americanized, but I think I'm going to put that on my list and watch it right away.
- 33:17Sydney: Yeah, definitely, definitely.
- 33:20Sydney: Make sure it's the 1955 version and this time of year sometimes like TCM plays it and you can just record it, but yeah.
- 33:30Eric: You get TCM on our YouTube channel.
- 33:34Sydney: I think you do.
- 33:34Sydney: I think you do get Turner classic.
- 33:36Sydney: Okay but it's definitely like there's something about it being from that time period that I think really lends itself to like the creepiness you know that, like black and white feel, the, you know, just the whole spookiness element.
- 33:55Eric: So I'm looking right now.
- 33:56Eric: And 1996 they did do one with Sharon Stone, kathy.
- 34:02Sydney: Bates.
- 34:03Eric: Jazz, polynmeri, but that's not the one we want to see.
- 34:09Sydney: No, you want the 1955 version I didn't even know they remade it.
- 34:14Sydney: Okay, make sure you get the old French version.
- 34:19Eric: Le di oblique.
- 34:22Sydney: Di oblique.
- 34:24Eric: So let's just quickly see.
- 34:26Eric: So just, oh, nice, you can get it on Max, which you can also get on the website Going to self of mine, the teen, which is on Disney.
- 34:43Eric: So you have to have a subscription to Disney to see that, or, I think, amazon.
- 34:48Eric: You can pay for it and then birds is on.
- 34:52Eric: What is birds on?
- 34:55Eric: Birds is on.
- 34:56Sydney: Peacock, so okay.
- 34:59Eric: You can rent it.
- 35:00Eric: I think you can rent it on prime.
- 35:01Eric: You can get it on on Peacock.
- 35:04Sydney: Yeah, I'm pretty sure, with what lies beneath, you can definitely get it on prime, and so what's your last one?
- 35:14Eric: You're going to save A movie.
- 35:16Eric: That is one of my favorite movies.
- 35:18Eric: My daughter introduced me to it.
- 35:21Eric: It's when I had my direct TV.
- 35:25Eric: It was the permanent movie that I had recorded.
- 35:29Eric: I was like I don't know, I just watch it all the time, kind of like how you watch that one every year.
- 35:35Eric: I think this movie is just and it's no surprise that I'm a Hallmark fan, because it's got all it's got it's, it's.
- 35:42Eric: It's got zombies and romance and it's warm bodies.
- 35:48Sydney: Oh, okay.
- 35:51Eric: All right, so it stars.
- 35:52Eric: I don't know how to pronounce his last name Nicholas.
- 35:54Eric: I think that's how you pronounce it.
- 35:55Eric: I think that's how you pronounce it.
- 35:59Eric: And then you have a kid from.
- 36:01Eric: It's about a boy who this was the first time I saw him again.
- 36:04Eric: You're like wait, how did the hunky good?
- 36:08Eric: looking zombie come from that kid and Teresa Palmer, who has been in a whole bunch of things which she's so good in this.
- 36:15Eric: I don't know how she wasn't a major star but she stayed consistent.
- 36:20Eric: Lib Lipton or Tipton she's been in a whole bunch of things.
- 36:25Eric: Rob Cordray they were the first people that were.
- 36:27Eric: They were in a movie.
- 36:29Eric: The movie is called the Macaw In it, so it's great cast.
- 36:35Eric: But in this movie Basically it's the zombie apocalypse and people are fighting, you know, trying to keep them apart, but somehow Are who's Nicholas whole.
- 36:50Eric: He holds on to a little bit of his memory and he's able to keep a that you should be killing zombies, but it goes ahead and he's got a little bit of humanity.
- 37:00Eric: And when Teresa Palmer's character who's Julie, he's about to be able to kill her.
- 37:06Eric: Instead he rescues her and he saves her and he keeps her away from the zombies and they develop a romance and they fall in love.
- 37:14Eric: And even though John Malkovich is her dad, who's in charge of killing all the zombies, he has to hide them from them.
- 37:22Eric: And it's just as corny as it is, it's a wonderful, cute love story in the zombie apocalypse.
- 37:33Eric: And then when they learn that you can, by just giving them some love.
- 37:37Eric: Zombies don't have to be bad.
- 37:40Eric: They can coexist.
- 37:42Eric: And zombies can be good and they can live a wonderful life assimilated with all the people.
- 37:47Eric: So it's just I guess.
- 37:51Eric: Have you ever seen it?
- 37:52Sydney: You know what?
- 37:53Sydney: I know this movie and I remember when it came out 2011,.
- 37:57Eric: I think it is.
- 37:59Sydney: I didn't see it because I think the concept of it was just so silly to me that you could actually have a relationship with a zombie.
- 38:07Sydney: I do remember he didn't look as deranged and not hot as the walking dead people.
- 38:15Sydney: You're right.
- 38:18Eric: You need to run, skip, skip bike, zoom your car space shuttle.
- 38:25Eric: You need to watch it.
- 38:27Eric: It is a great movie, A great movie.
- 38:32Eric: So I'll watch the Oblique and you need to watch One on Bodies.
- 38:38Sydney: But you really also need to watch what Lies Beneath, because I'm pretty sure your wife would like that.
- 38:43Eric: I'm down with that too, but you don't watch that every year.
- 38:46Sydney: And I actually do watch that every year.
- 38:50Eric: So these are all on the annual playlist now, huh.
- 38:53Sydney: I was going to say I've now bought these on Prime, so I just play them every year.
- 38:59Sydney: But okay, my last one, Eric.
- 39:02Sydney: We're going even further back in time, we're going to 1940.
- 39:09Eric: Whoa.
- 39:12Sydney: Yeah, this movie stars Joan Fontaine and Lawrence Olivia, and it is directed by Alfred Hitchcock and it is called Rebecca.
- 39:26Sydney: And this was yeah, it was his first American movie.
- 39:31Sydney: I think he was before that doing him in England, but this was his first come into America.
- 39:38Sydney: So the story of a young woman who marries a fascinating widower, only to find out that she must live in the shadow of his former wife, rebecca, who died mysteriously several years earlier.
- 39:51Sydney: The young wife must come to grips with the terrible secret of her husband, or her handsome, cold husband, max de Winter.
- 40:02Sydney: She must also deal with the jealous, obsessed Miss Danvers, the housekeeper, who will not accept her as the new mistress of the house.
- 40:11Sydney: So I initially watched this movie in humanities in college, and that's because you're kind of dealing with the humanity aspect of it.
- 40:19Sydney: Right, there's this woman and she fell in love with this widower basically when he was on vacation, to be honest, so he wasn't even at this house.
- 40:29Sydney: Then she comes back as his new wife.
- 40:32Sydney: To this I would say a mysteriously creepy mansion that is upon a high cliff and all that jazz, and he's not who.
- 40:43Sydney: He was on vacation, which, hey, who is who on?
- 40:48Eric: vacation right.
- 40:50Sydney: I mean, you're your best version then.
- 40:52Sydney: And then you come back to your creepy house and you're like you are so.
- 40:57Sydney: But there's a secret to him that has to do with his wife who mysteriously died, and there's an aspect of her having to either come to terms with it and accept that or not, and then life is hard.
- 41:19Sydney: So, anyways, she has to also deal with this housekeeper, who is quite frankly crazy, and this obsessive fascination with the first wife who you can never basically compete with, and you can't compete with a ghost.
- 41:38Sydney: So it just was very freaky to me and it stood out to me.
- 41:45Sydney: I don't watch this one every year, but I watch it maybe once every two to three years because it's so creepy.
- 41:53Eric: I did not realize this was the first American one, but yes, it is a great movie.
- 41:57Eric: In fact, I wanna say I watched it within the last couple of months.
- 42:03Sydney: The original- one, because I think they have remade it and I don't know why, I know definitely original.
- 42:12Eric: You've gotta rent it on Amazon.
- 42:16Sydney: I think that's the only way you can get.
- 42:17Eric: It is renting or buying on Amazon.
- 42:21Sydney: Now I'm gonna have to buy it.
- 42:22Sydney: I didn't make it, buy it out there, but it's a shame.
- 42:25Eric: There should be like the Alfred Hitchcock channel, or it should be on one of the streaming services.
- 42:31Eric: Should just figure out a way to get all of the whole catalog of alpha For there should be like this time of year.
- 42:39Sydney: We should be having like Hitchcock days, where it's like days on days.
- 42:44Eric: Yeah, I haven't seen that, and yeah, I think if you're just watching, like you said, turner Classic movies or something like that, you'll probably be able to catch it.
- 42:52Eric: But no, it's a great.
- 42:56Eric: I'm behind you here.
- 42:58Eric: It's a great movie and it's.
- 43:00Eric: I had my bird, which is kind of the just scary movie because of the birds coming, so it's more of a horror movie, whereas this one's just a weird mental thriller.
- 43:15Sydney: Yeah, and there are creepy aspects to it.
- 43:17Sydney: Because, the house is creepy and things about him are creepy and things about the housekeeper are creepy, so it has like.
- 43:24Sydney: And birds is also like a psychological thriller because it plays on, like you know, your susceptibility to just about anything and correct right.
- 43:35Sydney: So there's a lot to him, like there's so much to unpack with Hitchcock, or like, oh so.
- 43:42Eric: But the yeah, rebecca.
- 43:44Eric: Yeah, it's a great.
- 43:45Eric: We could probably do a whole episode on just Alfred Hitchcock and just once again be fast-same, because those movies are so good.
- 43:55Sydney: Yeah, and mysterious.
- 43:57Eric: All right, do you have one picked out for this year?
- 44:02Sydney: So last year I made Nick sit through Bram Stoker's Dracula, which was with Winona Ryder and piano Reeves and stuff.
- 44:13Eric: Love me someone on a Ryder.
- 44:14Sydney: Okay, so I picked it.
- 44:16Sydney: Yes, I thought about.
- 44:18Eric: Heather's for my list, by the way.
- 44:20Sydney: That is a good one, but I picked it because the styling and the wardrobe was absolutely phenomenal, but the movie itself was so disappointing I was like this is what is this trash?
- 44:33Sydney: So this year I'm kind of like I don't know, I'm not sure yet I'm sure it'll come to me.
- 44:44Sydney: You've given me some options.
- 44:46Eric: But this is warm, or warm bodies, I tell you.
- 44:52Sydney: Yeah, I just need them.
- 44:53Sydney: This is my only chance to get them to watch something that's slightly spooky, like how your wife gets you to watch.
- 45:00Sydney: So, like some, I got to kind of.
- 45:03Sydney: I got to kind of pick something that's a little bit got a little bit of gore in it that I can get away with.
- 45:10Sydney: Because we watched the year before last.
- 45:12Sydney: We watched the one with Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci where he's the headless.
- 45:18Eric: Oh, it's sleepy hollow.
- 45:20Sydney: And that was really great and he actually did like that.
- 45:23Sydney: But see, there is an element of boredom.
- 45:29Eric: It's funny you mentioned that one, because that's what I was thinking about.
- 45:32Eric: Proposing this year for Halloween was sleepy hollow.
- 45:37Sydney: I mean stylistically.
- 45:38Sydney: That movie is beautiful.
- 45:42Eric: So I don't know and I don't know all the details because I didn't watch it but there's just some sort of Ick with Johnny Depp in the whole divorce case, like that all being.
- 45:54Sydney: I don't know who was right or who was wrong.
- 45:56Eric: Yeah, just like both him and Amber heard to me just there just seems to be some ickiness to both of them.
- 46:04Sydney: I think you kind of have to like separate it from.
- 46:06Sydney: You have to kind of mentally try to separate it from people's like work, because also he was, he wasn't even with her then he was so much younger.
- 46:14Sydney: This is from like 2000 or 2001.
- 46:16Eric: Oh, this is the whole music thing.
- 46:18Eric: I mean I said Michael Jackson for the song and yeah, he's got definitely some things done back there.
- 46:24Eric: So, yeah, Well, there we go.
- 46:29Eric: So get a bowl full of Reese's peanut butter cups, some dots.
- 46:34Eric: The other thing I always I will snag are the little individual twizzlers.
- 46:38Eric: I like those two, but I licorice fairly often, whereas dots is kind of my Halloween Thing, I have to say, for Halloween Okay.
- 46:50Eric: I'll go through and get the big bag, you know, the big bag of candy, and I'll pull out a bunch of the dots to save for myself.
- 47:01Sydney: Well, make sure you also, with your dots, have your autumn teeny.
- 47:05Eric: Definitely, definitely.
- 47:07Eric: It's a little hard to do that because we now today is our, for today is October 21st and it is the first day under 100.
- 47:21Eric: This seems like we finally it's nine.
- 47:24Eric: Now let's see what it is.
- 47:26Eric: It was 90 last I looked.
- 47:28Eric: Oh, I take it back.
- 47:30Eric: Oh no, it says 100 right on the dot.
- 47:33Eric: It's supposed to be like 96 or something, but apparently hit 100.
- 47:39Eric: But tomorrow it's supposed to break, so let's hope it didn't happen today, so let's hope it's tomorrow and then I can break into my autumn.
- 47:49Eric: Teeny it's a little hard to enjoy that autumn season when it's 100 degrees.
- 47:54Sydney: It is, and today.
- 47:56Sydney: Yesterday we were 91, and today was our break day, which now it's 80.
- 48:03Sydney: Okay, let me put my scarf on.
- 48:07Eric: Hey, you want to get your autumn on.
- 48:09Eric: I'll talk about my daughter again.
- 48:11Eric: So you know she moved to Boston.
- 48:12Eric: The craziest thing it is beautiful during the week and then rains every Saturday, sunday.
- 48:19Eric: It has done this since she has moved there the weekend.
- 48:23Eric: The week we moved her in was gorgeous every weekend.
- 48:27Eric: Since then it has rained Saturday, sunday and today was no exception.
- 48:32Eric: But she's just like, damn it, it's the weekend I'm going, and so she's got herself her raincoat, she's got her like rain boots and off.
- 48:41Eric: They went to the apple orchard and pumpkin patch and you wanted to get your New England, your New England pumpkin patch, apple orchard.
- 48:50Eric: That's talking some fall spirit there.
- 48:54Sydney: She's not far from Salem.
- 48:55Sydney: She could throw a witch trial in there.
- 48:57Eric: Yeah, they're planning on.
- 48:58Eric: They're planning on going, so yeah but, they despite the rain.
- 49:05Eric: You know, I think it was when they went mostly mostly drizzle but still was raining.
- 49:09Eric: And it's funny, next weekend Saturday, sunday, 80% chance of rain All right, but hopefully she'll get up to Vermont to see the nice fall, leaves and everything.
- 49:25Sydney: That should be ending.
- 49:26Eric: pretty soon They'll all be falling off.
- 49:29Sydney: And then season of the sticks.
- 49:31Eric: Yeah, okay.
- 49:33Eric: Well, it's time to say wish you a scary good night.
- 49:44Sydney: Oh my gosh and I wish you a safe and spooky Halloween.
- 49:48Sydney: Okay, good night.
- 49:49Eric: Good night Eric.
- 49:50Sydney: Oops, Good night Eric.
