- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:02daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:05from social media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:08Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:12the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:16Welcome back to the last Mini Scroll of the week, everybody.
- 0:20So little scheduling update. I know I said this week was
- 0:23going to be normal, but I am figuring out the growing pains
- 0:28of, you know, the daily podcast balanced with the deep dive.
- 0:32And I did hire a deep dive editor a few weeks ago and she's
- 0:37still kind of getting up and running.
- 0:38So there will be no deep dive unfortunately tomorrow.
- 0:42I just need like a week of buffer to really solidify our
- 0:47editors new schedule and like how the workflow is going to go.
- 0:51So I need this week off to get her up to speed.
- 0:54But next week I promise we'll be normal.
- 0:57All right, let's just get right into the stories for today.
- 1:00So the first story that I have for you guys is that Bella Hadid
- 1:03has announced her fragrance brand Aura Bella.
- 1:06Bella is venturing into the world of fragrance with the
- 1:09launch of her new brand, Aura Bella.
- 1:11Aura Bella is quote the first intentional skin parfum.
- 1:15Launching May 2nd, the brand features 3 genderless scents,
- 1:19blooming Fire Window to Soul and salted Muse.
- 1:22The scents were crafted using aromatherapy designed to boost
- 1:25your mood and personal aura. According to Bustle Quote.
- 1:30Unlike most fragrances on the market, which use alcohol as a
- 1:33base, Orabella opts for essential oils blended into a
- 1:36skin friendly oil that won't cause irritation on sensitive
- 1:39complexions. So these fragrances quote infuse
- 1:44the skin with scent and hydration with every spritz.
- 1:48And according to some reviews from different beauty editors
- 1:50who had access to the product before it launched, they say
- 1:53that it's kind of like a almost like a creamy serum like product
- 1:58when you spritz it on yourself, which I guess is why they're
- 2:00saying it's like hydrating with every spritz, Bella said.
- 2:03This brand was five years in the making and it just feels very
- 2:06Bella, It's very in line with Kin.
- 2:09Is that her drink brand that's like infused with stuff to make
- 2:13you feel happy? This is the same vibe.
- 2:15This is supposed to like boost your mood when you use it, You
- 2:18know, it's kind of all natural. It's very in line with Bella's
- 2:21personal brand, with how she at least publicly presents kind of
- 2:25how she lives her life. And we know she suffers with
- 2:28chronic Lyme disease and she has been sick for.
- 2:32I mean, I think she kind of took almost a full year off, even
- 2:34more so I think she's getting back out there now.
- 2:37But yes, she was very sick for a while there and this is very
- 2:42much in line with that. It's like all natural.
- 2:44It's to like help you feel better, all that kind of stuff.
- 2:47And people are saying it smells amazing, It has had amazing
- 2:50reviews. The bottles are really cool.
- 2:52So I think I want to get my hands on it if it comes to
- 2:56Australia if All right, the next story that I have for you guys
- 2:59is that a TikTok creator has called out Olivia Rodrigo's team
- 3:02for quote, UN quote, stealing her merch idea and selling it
- 3:06back to fans. TikTok creator at Hey, It's Ali.
- 3:09Jade made a TikTok video yesterday claiming that Olivia
- 3:12Rodrigo's team copied her T-shirt design.
- 3:15So Ali said she is a huge Olivia fan and that her whole family
- 3:20recently went to the Guts tour. She said that an inside joke in
- 3:23her family is that whenever they hear the song, bad idea, right,
- 3:27her father turns it into dad idea, right?
- 3:31So she made her dad AT shirt for the Guts tour that said dad
- 3:35idea, right? Because they all went together
- 3:37and he wore it. And now a couple months later,
- 3:40Olivia is selling Dad idea, right?
- 3:42Merch. It looks exactly the same as
- 3:46Ali's T-shirt. However, the important thing to
- 3:49note here is that Ali made the shirt for her dad stylized in
- 3:53like the exact vibe of Olivia's March, so she basically just
- 3:57switched out the B for the D in. Bad idea, right?
- 4:01Bad idea, right? But everything else on the
- 4:03T-shirt looks the exact same as Olivia Rodrigo's official March.
- 4:07So Ali's video went pretty viral, and she actually ended up
- 4:10deleting it because fans were defending Olivia so hard, saying
- 4:14that dad idea right is an inside joke in the fandom and Olivia
- 4:18owns the design, which was Ali's T-shirt.
- 4:21OK, so I don't personally know enough about the Olivia Rodrigo
- 4:25lore to know if her fans actually do say like dad idea,
- 4:28right? As an inside joke.
- 4:31But I think this whole scenario is a really interesting case
- 4:34study in celebrity PR. Like Olivia is very beloved, she
- 4:39is unproblematic, and she uses her influence for good.
- 4:43Some examples of how she does that, she aligns with local
- 4:46charities wherever she's touring.
- 4:48Different countries, different continents.
- 4:50She aligns with those charities and gives a portion of her
- 4:52ticket sales to those charities. As we know, she's also
- 4:56championed abortion rights all throughout the US at a bunch of
- 4:59her US shows, so she really uses her power and her influence as
- 5:03this a list celebrity for good, and that's pretty unique
- 5:07nowadays. We don't see a lot of
- 5:09celebrities at her level speak out so vocally about different
- 5:12issues like that, especially something as contentious as
- 5:15abortion rights. And when you kind of think about
- 5:18how this video, like Ali's video, Ali's claim that Olivia
- 5:21stole her design, If you think about that in relation to other
- 5:25celebrities that I would say are around Olivia's size, like the
- 5:29Kardashians or Taylor Swift, I mean, I don't know, maybe that's
- 5:32like delusional of me to put Olivia Rodrigo in those
- 5:35categories. But to me she is.
- 5:37I feel like she is for like Gen. Z.
- 5:39So if you think about if Ali's video was made about anyone in
- 5:43the Kardashian family or even Taylor Swift, the reception
- 5:46would be very different. You know, people would believe
- 5:50it. People would say exactly, Kim
- 5:52stole your idea, Taylor stole your idea.
- 5:54And it's not that these people don't have fans, right?
- 5:56It's not that there aren't huge Kardashian stands or huge
- 6:00swifties as we know. Their die hard fans would defend
- 6:03them against a video like this, against a claim like this, but
- 6:06the general sentiment around Olivia Rodrigo is that she
- 6:11operates with such integrity that whether it's authentic or
- 6:14not, I don't think it really matters because the work that
- 6:17she's doing is so good and therefore that integrity is
- 6:20working in her favor here. People are inclined to believe
- 6:23that because she is operated with such integrity throughout
- 6:27her kind of a list status that she wouldn't just be out here.
- 6:31Like stealing a fan's merch design and not paying for it or
- 6:33not giving them credit. It's very rare where we see,
- 6:37especially on TikTok, a celebrity, a wealthy person, a
- 6:41famous person get called out by the general consumer and the
- 6:44public is on the celebrity side as opposed to on the consumer
- 6:49side. OK.
- 6:50And the last word that I have for you guys is that Instagram
- 6:53is cracking down on aggregator accounts.
- 6:56A little tech news for you. So following the news that
- 6:59Instagram will be limiting access to political content,
- 7:03whatever that means, the platform has now announced that
- 7:06it is changing its algorithm to quote reward original content.
- 7:10So they will be doing this through implementing 4 changes.
- 7:15The 1st is a new input to ranking that will give smaller
- 7:18creators more distribution #2 replacing repost with original
- 7:23content and recommendations, #3 adding labels to reposted
- 7:27content, linking to the original creator, and #4 removing content
- 7:31aggregators from recommendations.
- 7:33Aggregator accounts are classified as accounts that
- 7:36posted 10 or more posts in the last 30 days that are not their
- 7:40own original content. So if you think like meme
- 7:43accounts, even publishers like those kind of like Millennial
- 7:47Media brands, so much of what they post is just repurposed
- 7:52content, like meme accounts. Basically.
- 7:54Instagram also admitted in this blog post that previously they
- 7:58ranked recommendations based on how an account's followers
- 8:02engaged with these posts. Therefore, typically bigger
- 8:05accounts were recommended over smaller accounts regardless of
- 8:08content. Now they claim that these
- 8:11changes will give all accounts more equal opportunity to be
- 8:15recommended. So this all sounds, I guess,
- 8:19pretty good. The only caveat here, and this
- 8:23is per Ryan Broderick for Garbage day quote.
- 8:26I think the notable thing here though is that Instagram is
- 8:28going after recycled Instagram content.
- 8:31It's not cracking down on screenshots or videos from other
- 8:35platforms. I assume because if they did
- 8:38that there would basically be nothing left for anyone to look
- 8:42at on the app. And that is the biggest caveat.
- 8:45If you think about these meme accounts, these aggregator
- 8:48accounts, even these millennial quote, UN quote publishers that
- 8:51I was just referring to, Most of what they are reposting or
- 8:55sharing is reposted Tik toks and even like reposted tweets.
- 8:59So will this really make a big difference on the app or is this
- 9:02more of just like a vanity thing so that Instagram can say like
- 9:04we hear you, we're trying to give smaller accounts a bigger
- 9:07opportunity? I think it's probably more the
- 9:10latter, but we will see. All right, guys, that is it for
- 9:14mini scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 9:18Please remember to rate, review and subscribe if you like the
- 9:21daily podcast, if you want more of it.

- 9:27recommendations, and I cannot wait to be back in your ears on
- 9:31Monday. All right.
