  Is it a descending order list? Are there fun things that you do

  a little differently? Like maybe you, I don't know,

  maybe you do double points for relays looking at you Texas.

  And then we're also going to get to the bottom of is it the state
• 0:48
  meet or do you qualify for states?

  Iowa here. So I'm super excited to welcome

  today's guest Miss Sarah from Roosevelt over in the great
• 1:21
  little city of Des Moines. I go there quite often about
• 1:23
  once a year for some little track meet they host over there.
• 1:25
  It's one of my favorite ones in the whole world.

  Sarah, thanks for being here. Thanks for representing the
• 1:30
  great state of Iowa. Why don't we start with a 30,000
• 1:33
  foot, maybe 32nd intro of Who in the Heck Are You?

  Yes, thank you. It's great to be here and I'm
• 1:40
  excited to talk about track and field with you today.
• 1:43
  So my name is Sarah Schwendinger.
• 1:45
  I am the head boys track and field coach at Des Moines
• 1:47
  Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, IA.
• 1:50
  I have been a track and field coach at Roosevelt since 2017.
• 1:56
  I started out as a a boys distance assistant coach and
• 2:00
  then in 2021 I became the head boys track and field coach at
• 2:05
  Roosevelt. And I am also the head boys
• 2:10
  cross country coach as well. At Des Moines, Roosevelt and I
• 2:13
  have been so since 2018. We have state qualifiers to the
• 2:19
  track and field meet every year and from sprinters, hurdlers,
• 2:24
  distance events. Couple years ago we actually had
• 2:28
  a a young man who qualified in both the shot put and the four
• 2:31
  by 100. And so that was extremely
• 2:34
  exciting. Yes, throwers can run fast and
• 2:36
  we talked a lot about that in our program.
• 2:38
  So I'm very excited. I've seen the assistant coach
• 2:41
  side of things and now I'm the head coach and it's it's really
• 2:44
  just a blast to work with. All of the the young men that I
• 2:47
  do it do more nuts. Well, that's awesome.
• 2:50
  We obviously got the right person for the state of Iowa.
• 2:52
  Anybody who has a shot putter, who also called, I was in a
• 2:54
  Sprint event, hands down. You must be doing something
• 2:57
  right. Absolutely.
• 2:58
  That's cool, Sarah. Awesome.

  So we start every episode here with the same question just to
• 3:04
  kind of get it on the floor and then we'll move through, you
• 3:06
  know how many divisions and everything like that.
• 3:08
  But the first question is some states have a separate private
• 3:12
  school association in a separate public school association.
• 3:15
  Others they're all, both are under the same organization.
• 3:18
  How are we doing in Iowa in regards to public and private
• 3:21
  schools? We're all together, so public
• 3:23
  and private is together, so we have the.
• 3:27
  Iowa High School Athletic Association for boys and the
• 3:30
  Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union for the girls side.
• 3:33
  But there is no difference between public and private.
• 3:36
  Everybody's just together. But Iowa is unique in that way
• 3:40
  and that they have two different governing bodies for the girls
• 3:45
  and the boys. Can you give us, because that is
• 3:47
  unique, can you give us a big snapshot of maybe why that is
• 3:51
  and what uniqueness, what uniqueness is that causes and
• 3:56
  what positivity, what positive things are having two separate
• 3:59
  boys and girls, girls union, boys, Athletic Association.
• 4:04
  You know, I think really from from the girls side of things, I
• 4:07
  think it just takes into account the, the.
• 4:11
  The uniqueness and the and the special recognition that that
• 4:14
  girls athletics needs to get as well versus being just lumped
• 4:18
  under one Athletic Association. So they you know they have their
• 4:23
  own set of of of of awards at times that they do for example
• 4:28
  on the ways they they they talk about the girls so like tickets
• 4:33
  punched and things like that. Special recognition at at
• 4:37
  qualifying needs and things like that and and you know I think.
• 4:41
  I actually like it because you know, you have a special
• 4:44
  governing body on that girls side and I think it's good
• 4:46
  because it addresses any you know needs that the girls might
• 4:51
  have or any special things that we need to recognize on the
• 4:54
  girls side. And then the boys have have
• 4:56
  their own as well. And so I think it's great to
• 4:58
  have. The two different points of view
• 5:00
  if I'm being honest for each side and it's it's it's been
• 5:04
  this way in Iowa for a really long time and and they value the
• 5:07
  fact that they have two associations that make decisions
• 5:12
  and in are in conversations to represent both genders.
• 5:16
  In a strong and positive way. Love it.
• 5:19
  That's awesome. It's really unique there.
• 5:20
  So I want to make sure we touch down that, OK, so we're all
• 5:23
  under, we're under 2 organizations, but we're all
• 5:26
  under one organization in regards to public, in private
• 5:29
  schools. So let's start with how many
• 5:31
  classes do we do for track and field for Iowa?
• 5:35
  Hey, there are four classes in the state. 4/8 is the largest.
• 5:39
  Then there's three A, 2A and 1A. Would be the smallest
• 5:42
  classification. So at the state meet, four boys
• 5:46
  teams are earning a state championship title and four
• 5:48
  girls teams are winning a state championship title.
• 5:51
  Perfect. OK, so we got four through 1A
• 5:54
  with four being big down to the smaller schools, down at the 1A.
• 5:58
  And what is the qualifying meal? The Iowa State meet is, you
• 6:01
  know, it's a what a great culture in the state of Iowa.
• 6:04
  For the Iowa State meet, what's the first round, you know
• 6:07
  throughout the country? It's divisional, sectionals,
• 6:09
  areas, regionals, all these different names.
• 6:11
  What's our first round in Iowa? There's one round only, so we
• 6:18
  have. We have our regular season that
• 6:20
  everybody has a conference meet, but as far as qualifying for the
• 6:23
  state meet, we go to one state qualifying meet the week before
• 6:28
  the actual state need itself. So we just have one round and
• 6:31
  you qualify out of that state qualifying beat.
• 6:35
  What do we call that meet? Is it regionals areas?
• 6:39
  It's the district meet or state qualifying meet.
• 6:42
  Oh, OK, so district or even call the state qualifying meet.
• 6:45
  OK, so how do I not necessarily qualify for that meet?
• 6:49
  Because it's not a meet that you qualify to, but what are the
• 6:52
  restrictions? How many athletes per event,
• 6:56
  things like that? So the school gets assigned
• 6:59
  based to your state qualifying meet based on your geographic
• 7:03
  location, and we have two. 2 athletes in each individual
• 7:10
  event and then A1 relay for each janitor.
• 7:14
  So if I've got 4 milers that all run 4 flat, 4 flat 401401, I can
• 7:21
  only enter two of those. That is correct, Okay.
• 7:24
  So the two have to go figure out the two mile or the half mile or
• 7:27
  something Okay all right to prevent.
• 7:29
  So we're getting to prevent and that's for all events excluding
• 7:32
  the relays of course. So all of our field events as
• 7:34
  well only to prevent in our in our district meet.
• 7:37
  That is correct. Perfect.
• 7:38
  Okay. So how, if I'm in the district
• 7:41
  meet what place or time? How do I get to the actual state
• 7:44
  meet? That's our very next round.
• 7:46
  Okay. So the top two place winners in
• 7:49
  each event, okay and each of the state qualifying sites auto
• 7:55
  qualify. And then after that they take
• 7:58
  the next 12 best from the state qualifying Meat Place winners
• 8:03
  1st through 8th. That is for 4A.
• 8:08
  OK, now in Class 3/8 and two A OK, it's the top two place
• 8:18
  winners and each event plus the next 8 best performances
• 8:22
  statewide from all the qualifying meat.
• 8:26
  Sites 1st through 8th place and then in one A.
• 8:30
  So that smallest division, it's the top place winner in each
• 8:36
  event, plus the next 14 best performances statewide, from the
• 8:43
  state qualifying meet place winners to the state meet Okay.
• 8:49
  This is where it always gets a little complicated.
• 8:51
  I'm a simplistic guy, so I like when they're all the same, but
• 8:54
  we're different here in Iowa. So in the big school division,
• 8:57
  we're taking the top 2IN districts and then out of all
• 9:01
  the rest of the districts, the next 12 top marks, top vaults,
• 9:08
  top four by eights, etcetera. That is correct, yes.
• 9:11
  So we have a certain number of qualifying meet sites, for
• 9:15
  example, in each classification. So for us it would be because
• 9:22
  I'm in for A, they take the top two and then from the rest of
• 9:26
  the sites the next two, so that there's only a total of 24 in
• 9:33
  each when you get to the state meet.
• 9:35
  And ties are basically broken based on the highest qualifying
• 9:41
  meat place, right? So if you have a tie, they look
• 9:44
  and say OK, but you finish third.
• 9:47
  Here and you finish 4th okay. So the third place one.
• 9:50
  But if it's still a tie right, Which happened to one of my
• 9:53
  athletes 2 years ago. They literally go to how your
• 9:56
  name, school name is printed in the directory.
• 10:00
  Hold on, obviously there was a disconnection.
• 10:03
  I didn't hear you correctly. All right, so the top 2GO and
• 10:07
  then the next 12. And for those 12, sometimes ties
• 10:09
  happen and let's say let's just use the 100 meter dash.
• 10:12
  Two kids run both run 1090 right on the dot FAT.
• 10:16
  But 1090 gets third place in one district and 1090 gets 4th in
• 10:20
  another district. The 1090 you got third that
• 10:23
  breaks the tie. That makes sense.
• 10:24
  You know that that's a feels like a fairish way to do it.
• 10:27
  OK. But if it's still tied both
• 10:29
  those athletes got third. They then go to your.
• 10:33
  Basically, I'm here in your school's alphabetical list.
• 10:37
  Yes. And actually it's funny that you
• 10:38
  bring up 100 meter guy because it was 100 meter guy and we we
• 10:43
  fell farther down alphabetically and so he did not get into state
• 10:47
  in the 100 meter. So we're going to use those 1090
• 10:50
  still. So both 1090 kids both get third
• 10:52
  place, One is Andover High school, another one is in
• 10:55
  Zoolander high School. Andover breaks the tie.
• 10:58
  All right, now that doesn't seem that seems a little odd.
• 11:04
  OK, all right, that's the way we do it.
• 11:06
  That's cool. Is that the same tiebreaker all
• 11:08
  the way through four through 1A? That?
• 11:09
  Is that is correct? Yes.
• 11:12
  And are we trying to get 24 because we're doing a little bit
• 11:15
  differently, but are we still trying to get 24 in each one of
• 11:18
  those divisions? To the state that is yes.
• 11:20
  That is yes that is that is correct.
• 11:22
  So let's recap for A. The large schools top two places
• 11:25
  in the district automatically go, and in the next 12 from the
• 11:28
  rest and then that wonky tie breaking system there I'm going
• 11:32
  to call that's my opinion my the middle, the middle divisions of
• 11:36
  3A and the two A. We're still taking top two
• 11:38
  automatically qualify, but it must mean there must be more
• 11:41
  districts, I'm assuming. Because that is correct, yeah,
• 11:44
  because then we're only taking eight from the rest of the non
• 11:47
  auto qualifiers and then in one A.
• 11:50
  This makes me feel like because we're still trying to get to 24.
• 11:53
  Is there a lot of districts in the small school?
• 11:56
  Yes, yes. So you have you have more.
• 11:59
  You yes, you have more of those more smaller districts.
• 12:02
  Yes, that's correct. Geographically smaller.
• 12:05
  Yeah, correct. That makes sense because smaller
• 12:07
  schools, there may be a little bit more spread out.
• 12:08
  So we help with the travel. Apps.
• 12:10
  Absolutely. Because otherwise you might make
• 12:12
  a team travel way across the state, which would be unfair.
• 12:15
  And yes, absolutely you're correct there.
• 12:16
  And so one a small schools we're doing top one and then the next
• 12:20
  14 qualifiers all to get to our 24 at the state meet.
• 12:23
  OK, perfect. All of that made sense, except
• 12:26
  for that the third breaking tie there.
• 12:29
  We're, I don't know, we're going to get with the Iowa the Girls
• 12:32
  Union. That's a little odd, Okay.
• 12:34
  Let's keep going, though. That's all right, Okay.
• 12:36
  Now let's talk about the state meet.
• 12:38
  Where is the state meet? Is it always in the same place?
• 12:40
  Is it at a college, At a high school?
• 12:42
  Do all four divisions go to the same place or do they go
• 12:45
  different venues? How are we doing the state meet?
• 12:47
  Okay. We do our state meet at Drake
• 12:49
  University, so on the on the Blue Oval and it is a multiple
• 12:56
  day. Event, so Coed, Coed state meet,
• 13:00
  one of the biggest in the country by the way, in terms of
• 13:03
  participation and attendance every year.
• 13:07
  And so it's a Thursday, Friday, Saturday meet.
• 13:11
  And the way they do it is they break it up into morning
• 13:15
  sessions and afternoon sessions on Thursday and Friday based on
• 13:19
  classes and then all classes on that Saturday.
• 13:23
  So you'll have class 1A and class 4A together on Thursday
• 13:30
  and Friday and then they do 2A and 3A together on Thursday and
• 13:34
  Friday. And it's a rotation versus AM
• 13:36
  and PM. So for example, everybody has to
• 13:39
  do 2 year rotation at each session.
• 13:43
  So for example, for a last year we were in the AM session.
• 13:47
  We need to do another another year at the AM session and then
• 13:52
  we will start our rotation and we will move to the afternoon
• 13:55
  session after this season. But then everyone's together on
• 13:59
  Saturday, so they have all the, you know, the finals and things
• 14:03
  like that. Our Saturday, so all the team
• 14:07
  titles are given out on Saturday.
• 14:08
  Absolutely, absolutely. That's the Day of Champions.
• 14:10
  That's. Oh my gosh, it's so much.
• 14:12
  Oh my gosh, it's too much fun. As long as you can remember,
• 14:16
  Drake has always been the host. As long as yes, as long as I can
• 14:20
  remember. I haven't been in this for long
• 14:25
  enough, or actually in the state of Iowa long enough to know
• 14:29
  where it was before. But yes, it has been at Drake
• 14:32
  University. Some states are adding adaptive
• 14:36
  or wheelchair events. Anything like that going on in
• 14:38
  Iowa? We do have wheelchair events.
• 14:41
  Nice. Yes, we have the wheelchair 204
• 14:45
  hundred and 800. Very cool.
• 14:47
  Love that. And that's part of the state
• 14:49
  meat process as far as they're doing it in the state meat.
• 14:53
  Yes, cool. Love that.

  Love that. After the state meet, some
• 14:58
  states do an unofficial or actually some states do an
• 15:01
  official meet of champions where they'll take the, you know, X
• 15:04
  amount of of each event from the one 2-3 and four and put them
• 15:07
  all together and they get to race each other.
• 15:09
  Anything like that in Iowa? The Iowa Association of Track
• 15:13
  Coach Check and Field Coaches has an event, has a championship
• 15:17
  event that they hold, but it's not a okay all of these.
• 15:21
  Winners from the state meet go to that.
• 15:23
  So it's really, you know, they they help hold their own events
• 15:28
  and they also do a state pentathlon as well.
• 15:33
  For high schoolers, so it's a championship event and a
• 15:39
  pentathlon, but it really is a voluntary.
• 15:42
  You go, not everybody gets sent and it it's a representation.
• 15:46
  Now you will often have right state me winners and things like
• 15:50
  that that choose to be part of that event.
• 15:53
  But it's not all. We have a meet of champions
• 15:55
  where everybody goes and they're doing a pentathlon for for
• 15:58
  athletes as well. Yes, that's great.

  I love that. It's, it's it's awesome.

  Yes. OK.

  So we're going to break this next question into little bites

  and chunks because I was very unique here.
• 16:09
  So the question is, and it's kind of a hard question, right,

  because I'm, I want to ask what unique events do you have in
• 16:14
  Iowa, but they're not really neat to you.
• 16:15
  You just do them, they're, you know, you don't know what maybe
• 16:18
  other people are doing. So let's go some blocks by
• 16:20
  blocks here. So let's make sure in Iowa we're
• 16:23
  definitely doing the 124 and the 800, correct.
• 16:26
  That's correct. Awesome.

  The next set of events, are we doing the 16 and 32?

  Are we doing the mile? Two mile?

  The Fifteen 3000? What do we do in that realm?
• 16:33
  OK, so the girls do the 1500, the boys do the 1600, the girls
• 16:41
  do the 3000, the boys do the 3200.

  OK, Now we're starting to see the differences of a boys
• 16:49
  Athletic Association and a girls athletic union as well.

  There are some differences here. OK, great.
• 16:54
  I'm glad you caught that. Make sure if there's any other
• 16:56
  events that you correct me here as well.

  OK, so that's all of our running events, right?
• 16:59
  We don't do a 5000 or anything. I don't say crazy, but no one's
• 17:02
  done a 5000 yet in the state meet.

  No, we do not do the 5001 thing that we do for the hurdles is
• 17:10
  everyone, boys and girls, runs 400 hurdles.

  So we don't have 300 hurdles. You jumped ahead.

  The next one's the hurdles. OK.

  So we do the 100 hurdles and the 110 hurdles and we do instead of
• 17:19
  the 300. We're one of the there's a few
• 17:22
  out there states that do 400 hurdles.

  Do we help me somewhere it changed or maybe it didn't.

  The girls 100 hurdles used to be at 30.
• 17:31
  Is it now at 33 inches somewhere I think it changed.

  And the followup question then as you're kind of struggling

  with that, that's Okay, is the 400 hurdles, do you know what

  height those are at? Oh, thirty, I thought.

  They were one click lower than college.

  Yes, they are. That's correct.

  That's correct. So the boys are running 33

  inches for their 400 hurdles. The girls are probably running

  30 cuz that's where everybody's running. 30, that's correct.

  We're not going lower that. OK, perfect.

  So that's unique. 400 hurdles. Not many states are doing that.

  I'm gonna pause on the relays, cuz we're gonna have fun with

  So field events, we're doing the long jump and triple jump.

  No triple jump in Iowa. Is that right?

  Normally I had pull vault cuz I do know we don't do pull vault

  in the great city of Iowa. We do not.

  We're not doing Hammer. We're not doing javelin.

  No, correct. OK, let's start talking about

  some relays, cuz we do some fun and cool things here in Iowa.

  So we're for sure doing the four by one and four by four.

  I've said it 100 times, If you're not doing the four by
• 18:50
  four, you're not really doing track.

  So you wouldn't even be on this podcast.

  So we're definitely doing those two relays.

  Are we doing it 4 by 2? Yes, yes, yes.

  Four by two, yes, we're doing it four by two.

  Are we doing it 4 by 8? Yes.

  Are we doing any kind of Sprint medley or distance medley?

  Yes, Sprint medley and distance medley.

  Sprint medley is 112 hundred 400.

  That's the Sprint medley and the distance medley is 202 hundred

  408 hundred. Does that change at all between

  the boys and the girls? They're all running 1124 and
• 19:25
  they're all running 2248. Well, that's all the relays,
• 19:30
  right? That's all the relays we do.

  Yes, and the reason I pause a little bit is part of my brain

  goes into what high school events?
• 19:37
  And things do we have at Drake Relays.

  And sometimes that things just a little bit.
• 19:40
  So we can water my pause for a second and long.

  That's a good point. It's a good you have you have a
• 19:44
  huge culture also of the Drake Relays which you maybe do more
• 19:47
  exactly the high schoolers there too.

  Now you did you failed the one test you did pass the relay of

  my favorite relay in the entire world that Iowa does it for the
• 19:56
  state meet. If I'm maybe you're about to

  correct me. I thought it was for the state
• 19:59
  meet, not just Drake relays, the Shuttle hurdle relay.

  Yes, shuttle hurdle, yes, Shuttle hurdle, yes, absolutely.

  And I have very enthusiastic hurdle assistant coaches, so

  shame on me for not being right on top of that.

  Yeah, the shuttle hurdle. Really.

  How fun. Very exciting.

  Favorite event in the whole world.

  I'm so proud of Iowa for having it as an official not just a
• 20:21
  Drake Relays and pin Relays. And you know the relay type
• 20:24
  meets this is we are doing this at the state meet.

  We love our Excite. My goodness, people get excited
• 20:30
  for Shuttle hurdle. Love it, love it.
• 20:31
  Love it. Did I miss any events we got?

  We went through the relays, we got through the field events and
• 20:37
  running events. Feel like we hit all the events.

  You have so many. I think it's 7 relays.

  Is what we have in Iowa, which is.

  OK, let's move to help us settle a little debate.

  A little argument here, at least depending on your culture and
• 20:52
  your region and your your team maybe there all across the
• 20:55
  country, we say it differently when we're trying to qualify for
• 20:58
  the state meet. Some are trying to qualify for
• 21:00
  the state meet, some are trying to qualify for state, some are
• 21:02
  trying to qualify for states. What are we doing in your area?
• 21:05
  How we saying that qualify for the state?
• 21:09
  State meet not states state meet.
• 21:13
  You're very firm on that one, absolutely.
• 21:15
  Cool. Love it.

  All right now. You've been such a great sport

  with us there. I really do appreciate

  everything. So I'm going to give you a magic

  And I always like to remind people one little change, not

  How you would improve the state qualifying system.

  That could be events, it could be venue, it could be how many
• 21:35
  people qualify. You name it.

  What one thing would you maybe change to help improve the great
• 21:41
  state of Iowa's outdoor state? Second field series.

  Well, we've sort of touched on this when we were talking about

  the ties earlier. Perhaps something different than

  your name in the state meet directory.

  Now you're going to ask me, what would it be?

  Okay. I don't exactly know, but I

  think we could come up with an alternative to that.

  iffy to me on that one. There's a lot of different ways
