- 0:56We're off to the goblin City. That's right.
- 0:58Our contestants will be going head-to-head and hand to helping
- 1:02hand in a competition themed around, Jim Henson's cult,
- 1:06classic fantasy film, labyrinth in nine hours, and 23 minutes.
- 1:12It's our guests will be mine turned into Goblin children
- 1:16unless they can solve my mysterious riddles.
- 1:19That's right. I'm like, David Bowie, except I
- 1:22have a gender identity. That people find even more
- 1:25confusing. As always, these questions were
- 1:29written by me with help from that amazing Muppet resource
- 1:32Muppet Wiki. And this time also with help
- 1:35from The Amazing book, Labyrinth the ultimate Visual History by
- 1:40Paula M, block and tackle. Rej Erdman, I read this thing.
- 1:44Cover to cover to help me plan this episode, which proves, just
- 1:48how dedicated I am to this quiz show that only appeals to about
- 1:5238 people. Speaking of doing research,
- 1:55let's agree to play fair today. Please don't, look at Muppet
- 1:58Wiki, or any other resource during this game.
- 2:02We all know how Sarah feels about things that aren't fair.
- 2:06So before I am prison both of you in my trivia oubliette Let's
- 2:12meet our contestants in a game. I call to tell a face
- 2:17contestants. You're going to buzz in to
- 2:21answer three questions about yourself.
- 2:25Whoever buzzes in first will get introduced first ready.
- 2:30Go Alright, JD JD your first question.
- 2:38What is your name or full points?
- 2:41Do you need to know what the initials stand for?
- 2:43No. Okay, my name is JD Hansel.
- 2:48Okay. And JD what's your history with
- 2:52the Muppets and Jim Henson, and all of those related works?
- 2:58Well, I grew up when the Muppets weren't really accessible
- 3:01anywhere, they weren't on TV. So I had to try to find Jim
- 3:06Henson things and figure out the life of Jim Henson after the
- 3:09fact. And so, I was consuming The
- 3:12Muppet Show Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, the cube, all of the
- 3:16stuff at once. And for me, Labyrinth is just a
- 3:19big part of my muppet fandom. It's one of the things I really
- 3:22love about Jim Henson, I've always been a fan, it's always
- 3:24kind of freaked me out the first movie to make my legs, shake
- 3:28with fear as a kid, but I love it.
- 3:31I love it to death and and JD D currently.
- 3:35What kind of Muppet stuff do you do?
- 3:37I know you just finished a big Muppet project for us at tough
- 3:43pigs did? I'm not sure.
- 3:44I'm thinking of what you're thinking of, I'm sort of between
- 3:47projects. I was thinking of the, the fake
- 3:49Henson Bistro. Yes, which is something.
- 3:52That's probably the two things. I think I'm best known for now
- 3:55are bad. Henson, bio and bad, Henson
- 3:57Bistro. I'm pretty happy with both of
- 3:59them. I don't know what the next bad
- 4:00Henson thing will be, but I do have plans for Other projects
- 4:04with tough pigs, which I'm really excited about.
- 4:06Well, that's great. And we're glad to have you here.
- 4:09And, you know, you've, I feel like you already answered the
- 4:12third question, but the third question was, what's your
- 4:15favorite thing about Labyrinth? Because there's so much going
- 4:20on. In this move hate you kind of
- 4:21already said that it was like the first movie that scared you
- 4:25which is a great answer but that's not necessarily what I
- 4:29like about it though, because I don't like to be afraid.
- 4:32I I think I love the impressive and creative puppets.
- 4:38I think the puppet designs are incredibly cool particularly
- 4:42with the shaft of hands. Just a brilliant idea.
- 4:45All right, well, that's 20 points for getting all three of
- 4:49those questions. Correct.
- 4:50I know. How did you do it?
- 4:53Even need to know what my initial stood for?
- 4:55No. See what adding look?
- 4:57You would have had 25 points if you told us but some seek.
- 5:00No, I'm kidding. In case you're wondering it.
- 5:03Is John Denver in The Muppets Christmas together you can see
- 5:07why I would shorten that a bit much.
- 5:11All right, now let's move on to our second contestant
- 5:14contestant. To what's your name?
- 5:16My name is Shan sha NN or Shannon.
- 5:22I've usually go by Shan Gwen. It's like Shan and penguin on
- 5:28Twitter and other social medias. All right and Shan What's your
- 5:33history with the Muppets? And Jim Henson.
- 5:36Well, I've, I've always liked loved like, Muppet type stuff.
- 5:42Like, obviously, I grew up with Sesame Street, and Sesame Street
- 5:46has kind of like, carried on, until like, by adulthood where I
- 5:49definitely still watch it today. And then the Muppets kind of,
- 5:52like stemmed off from there, and then I just got very like hyper
- 5:59focused. And I guess over the past years,
- 6:02I've Really gone to, you know, Henson's other works like it
- 6:07could be from like you know the Muppet Show or like any of the
- 6:11Muppet movies to even like very obscure products like dog City
- 6:15and ghost are Hafner Hall which I think are like underrated
- 6:19Classics and get like it's mainly just been like you know a
- 6:26fascination with like Henson's Works whether he was alive or or
- 6:30past good stuff. I know and And, and you're an
- 6:34artist yourself. So, a lot of that definitely
- 6:37makes sense. And Shan, what's your favorite
- 6:41thing about Labyrinth? I so like, I guess the main
- 6:46thing would definitely be David Bowie because I'm a big David
- 6:49Bowie, fanatic. And I think he just, he totally
- 6:52just shines in this movie with just like, the way he portrays
- 6:58jareth and, you know, the songs he wrote from the movie are just
- 7:02incredible. And but I think just not only
- 7:06David Bowie but also just the creature designs.
- 7:09Like I love The Helping Hands, I love the fire.
- 7:12He's, I love that whole scene. Yeah, it's just it just has a
- 7:16lock of good to it. Yeah no excellent excellent.
- 7:21And you've also earned 20 points for getting those questions.
- 7:24Correct. So that might have been easy but
- 7:28the road only gets more confusing from here.
- 7:31In fact, let's start our trivia with a game.
- 7:35I call it's not Are I'm calling it that because this round
- 7:40doesn't really have a theme. Besides just being about
- 7:44Labyrinth. Each of these questions is worth
- 7:47one point. Please.
- 7:48Wait until I finish the question to buzz in.
- 7:51So the Goblins at home can play along.
- 7:53Here we go. Question 1.
- 7:56What is the name of Sarah's favorite stuffed bear?
- 8:04J.d. Lancelot, it is Lancelot
- 8:08correct. Question to jareth says that if
- 8:12Sarah kisses Hoggle, he'll turn Hoggle into what J.d.
- 8:22Prince of the land of stench, the prince of the land of
- 8:26stench. Question 3.
- 8:30What does Sarah need to get before?
- 8:33She can pass sir. Didymus has Bridge.
- 8:40J.d. His permission his permission.
- 8:44Yes, and an abstract thing but I think she needs nonetheless.
- 8:50All right, so these next two questions are based on the fact
- 8:53that I find the plot of Labyrinth to be a little
- 8:57confusing. I'm gonna give you three events
- 9:01in the movie and I am going to need you guys to buzz in and
- 9:05tell me what happens first. I had a feeling you'd do this
- 9:12because let me tell you, it was hard for me.
- 9:15When I was writing these, I re-watched the movie and I was
- 9:18just writing down the events in numeric order because, you know
- 9:22the events don't necessarily follow each other in the form of
- 9:26a plot structure. So, here's the three events.
- 9:29I'm giving you here, the two-headed guards, the false
- 9:34alarms, or meeting the wise man, which happened First.
- 9:43Cheyenne. Is it meeting the wise, man?
- 9:46It is unfortunately not feeding the wise, man.
- 9:48Good? Guess JD Can you steal?
- 9:51You've got a 50-50 shot, as you were saying it, I knew that I
- 9:54knew the answer, but now I've forgotten, which things that you
- 9:56said, oh, I came to give you again your choices.
- 9:59Which is first, the two-headed guards, or the false alarms, the
- 10:03two-headed guards? It is the guards.
- 10:06Absolutely. All right.
- 10:07Next question. Which of these happened last?
- 10:10Meeting the door knockers running from the cleaners being
- 10:15locked in the oubliette. San you have a guess, I'm gonna
- 10:23guess being locked in oubliette. No, I'm sorry.
- 10:27Listen, listen, this is tough. I know.
- 10:33JD the cleaners or the door knockers which comes last the
- 10:38door. Knockers it is the door.
- 10:40Knockers good question. 6 in both the original draft of the
- 10:46labyrinth script and the final filmed version very Is the same.
- 10:51However, there is some key detail about when when the main
- 10:55character meets Hoggle that is the same in both versions.
- 11:00Something about the scene where we meet Hoggle that is the same
- 11:03in both versions. If you don't know, the
- 11:06backstory, think about something about the scene where we meet
- 11:09Hoggle and gas. JD.
- 11:14Do you have a guess? I have a guess.
- 11:17Is he killing fairies? He is not killing fairies in the
- 11:21original script. It's something else that he's
- 11:23doing in both versions. So, again, Shan if you don't
- 11:27know, the backstory here, think of what he's doing in the scene
- 11:30where we meet them Parks. I was also going to say
- 11:33something about the fairies where you know, Sarah gets you
- 11:36know bit I've thought of what the other thing is.
- 11:41It's not pleasant. Yeah, I'm gonna have to take a
- 11:47pass on this one because I've just got to go with the same
- 11:50answers. JD with the fairies.
- 11:52I don't know what listen, pass was very close because in all
- 11:57versions of the script Hoggle is relieving himself.
- 12:04Trey, I don't know why they decided, they wrote that in the
- 12:07first draft. And they were like, we gotta
- 12:09keep this. I think that's like, the one
- 12:11seen I've blocked from memory. This like, no kidding, no
- 12:14kidding. Gee.
- 12:17You mean that scene. Isn't isn't as magical and
- 12:19pleasant as some of the, some of the later, fun stuff.
- 12:23I think so, okay, last question in this round in the first
- 12:27volume of the return to Labyrinth manga, which character
- 12:33from another Henson production appears in one panel with a
- 12:38speaking cameo. This is, this is probably the
- 12:43hardest question, because no one remembers this manga.
- 12:46I haven't even been able to find it on like, so, I know, I
- 12:48definitely try to but it's, yeah, it's like very obscure
- 12:54Sandy or guess I'm gonna do. I'm gonna go with the most
- 12:56obvious one, it's Kermit, it's not.
- 12:58Whoa! Casey listen!
- 13:01I'm gonna throw you a point because it's not a speaking
- 13:04Cameo but Kermit there is a picture of Kermit and one of the
- 13:10panel's. So you know Love you like some
- 13:12reference to like the Muppets you know I will give you I will
- 13:15be bubble Point Jason any idea who else it might be.
- 13:22I would only be taking a totally random wild, guess Arnie from
- 13:29the cube. It's not already from the cube.
- 13:32It actually, it makes sense that this character would show up in
- 13:37a random place because it's traveling.
- 13:39Matt, from Fraggle, Rock. Oh, that would see.
- 13:43That would make sense. That's cute.
- 13:44He shows up you, he shows up at the party and he asks for
- 13:48radishes, he asks like one of the People going around with
- 13:54appetizers, if they have any radishes.
- 13:56All right, so we're going to move on to our next round, which
- 14:01is our classic head-to-head round beat the time.
- 14:07You've got 13 hours on the clock, or probably a little
- 14:11less. I'm going to ask you a question
- 14:15that has many correct answers specifically, it has 10 correct
- 14:19answers, starting with Shan you will give an answer to my
- 14:24question. Then we'll move to JD will
- 14:27alternate back and forth until neither of you can answer.
- 14:33If you can't answer or you take too long, your opponent will
- 14:36have a chance to steal. And again, if neither of you can
- 14:39answer the round will end, So, what is this?
- 14:43Roundabout. Well, we're going to talk about
- 14:46jareth. David Bowie was the only person
- 14:50Jim Henson ever spoke to directly about playing jareth
- 14:55and when he agreed, no one else needed to be asked.
- 15:00However, we know from Henson's notes and other documents that
- 15:0510 other 70s and 80s rock musicians were considered for
- 15:11the role. Role of jareth starting with
- 15:13Shan, you will each take turns naming a rock musician that was
- 15:17considered for the role of Jairus worse.
- 15:19Comes to worst, just guess a rock musician that people
- 15:23considered sexy in 1986. I guess some of these are pop
- 15:28musicians, rock pop, I mean genre is weird David Bowie would
- 15:33say that but yeah, you can get pretty far with that even if
- 15:37you're not sure of the particulars.
- 15:40So let's get Started Shan. Can you name a rock or pop
- 15:46musician who was considered for the role of jareth to see Billy
- 15:50Idol? That would be a great pick and I
- 15:54need a genuine can't believe Billy Idol is not on this list
- 16:00right era, right era. Okay.
- 16:03Similar similar like sexual appeal, but no, so we'll come
- 16:07back. But now JD, do you have one?
- 16:11Sting sting is on the list. And you have another guest.
- 16:18Prince, prince is on the list. Good, JD Michael Jackson.
- 16:25Michael Jackson is on the list, a very different movie if that
- 16:29was the case. And also yeah, it's already
- 16:34weird. The age Gap but probably weirder
- 16:38if it was Michael check. Anyway, there's a head, do you
- 16:41have another guess? Mick?
- 16:42Jagger Mick Jagger. Absolutely.
- 16:47JD Rod Stewart Rod Stewart, one of the ones that I wasn't sure
- 16:54counted as a rock musician you know Shan this.
- 17:00It doesn't I'm going to guess this Steven Tyler Again.
- 17:04Okay wait makes sense. What makes sense?
- 17:07Not on my list. Okay, j.d. there are still five.
- 17:14Wow and these These are musicians that you guys know
- 17:18like it's not like one of these is like you know the lead singer
- 17:22of Supertramp like they're musicians who, you know, What
- 17:32about Jon? Bon Jovi, not Bon Jovi.
- 17:35Again, a very different movie. It was Bon Jovi.
- 17:40Shan do you have a guess? Bruce Springsteen.
- 17:44Again, very different movie want to see that different.
- 17:50I'm gonna I know you both got it wrong, but I'm gonna keep going.
- 17:52Just a little bit j.d. I looked it up the other day.
- 18:03I had a funny feeling this was coming and yet, I mean, I can
- 18:06start giving totally drawing of I guess.
- 18:12Make me starve. Make me think.
- 18:18Who we said so far. Okay, we've said Michael Jackson
- 18:21sting Rod Stewart, Mick, Jagger and Prince.
- 18:28This is wrong, but it's funny. Phil Collins, it's funny, it's
- 18:34funny. It is wrong.
- 18:36It's already kind of problem and he is a Shortcake.
- 18:41Oh, he's most of the way there, sad.
- 18:45Any other guesses. Paul McCartney know, the
- 18:51Beatles, The Beatles aren't here, but some of I know we
- 18:54already did Mick Jagger. I was about to say some of their
- 18:57contemporaries Is our but um, okay.
- 19:00No. We did Mick Jagger already.
- 19:02Um, some later stuff, at least one that if you think about
- 19:06David Bowie's. Weird gender as alluded to
- 19:09earlier, is definitely another choice in that vein.
- 19:17JD is that ringing any bells? Not yet.
- 19:24All right. I might have to call it if we
- 19:27can't go further here can I throw one out there?
- 19:30Sure, send throw, one out, the Odd, Todd Rundgren.
- 19:36Yeah no. Yeah.
- 19:40And we should call, we should call the Jim Henson company,
- 19:43Circa 1986 and tell them to get some of these people on this.
- 19:47Because you're you're naming like The right kind of
- 19:51musicians, both of you with maybe the exception of Bon Jovi,
- 19:55but all right. I'm gonna, I'm gonna just have
- 19:59to call it, he okay. So the remaining five, first of
- 20:06all, the one I was thinking about with the kind of like,
- 20:09Walking, the gender binary in strange, ways, Freddie Mercury
- 20:15was considered. Who was the one again?
- 20:18That I was considering there with like that sort of thing.
- 20:22Other choices Keith Richards. Ted Ted Nugent who I misread as
- 20:28Todd Rundgren when you said that and got excited but it's Ted
- 20:32Nugent. Roger Daltrey and David Lee
- 20:37Roth. Wow.
- 20:40David Lee Roth kind of would make sense.
- 20:41I could see that I can see a couple of these sting would have
- 20:45been very different but I think would have worked.
- 20:48David Lee Roth would have worked Prince would have been
- 20:52incredible. I'm not sure what movie that
- 20:55would be anymore, but It would be entertaining.
- 21:01All right. Well listen at the very least.
- 21:04We all learned something about Roger, Daltrey and now we're
- 21:10moving into my favorite game back again from season one of
- 21:16hubba-wha the triangle is right. Well, sorta as you know, in this
- 21:25game every question has three Correct answers.
- 21:30Hence the title of the game, you can earn a point for each.
- 21:34Correct answer you get buzzed in, even if you don't know, all
- 21:40three answers, you'll get a point for whatever you do,
- 21:44remember. But if you miss anything or if
- 21:48you say three things, and two of them are right and one of them
- 21:51is wrong, your opponent will have a chance to get whatever is
- 21:55left over. So again, please wait until I
- 22:00finish reading the question to buzz in so that our friends at
- 22:03home can play along. And again, even if you don't
- 22:06know all three answers buzz in you still get points for what
- 22:10you do. Remember question, one, the only
- 22:14three characters in the movie to be puppeteered and voiced by the
- 22:19same person, JD a little before--she and right there.
- 22:26Can you name them? Hoggle Hoggle is one Ludo.
- 22:33Ludo is the other. The worm, it's not the worm.
- 22:40Shan do, you have a guess as to who the third character might
- 22:43be? I think it's going to be but
- 22:45sir, didymus it's not didyma skater strangely.
- 22:50It is the lead fiery. Wow!
- 22:55And hey, second part to this question and let's, let's buzz
- 22:58in again. Can you name those?
- 23:01Three puppeteers who voiced and performed Hoggle, Ludo, and
- 23:05fiery. Are any of them?
- 23:11J.d. Brian Henson is playing Hoggle
- 23:14hmm Kevin Clash is playing the fiery Kevin Clash displaying the
- 23:18fiery because he sounds like the baby dinosaur.
- 23:21This is true. This is true. and, I was name
- 23:27pronounced Ron uick as yeah, no, yeah, Ranma you occur on newick?
- 23:32I don't actually know, because I've never heard it.
- 23:34I've eliminated either seems like a very impressive person.
- 23:38Oh yeah, no great. Great work on Ludo, Ludo is a
- 23:40great character. All right, next question.
- 23:44Once she begins her Quest. What are the first three
- 23:48creatures that Sarah encounters? Saint the worm, the fairies and
- 24:00Hoggle, okay, technically there's one before the worm I'll
- 24:05come but I will give you the two points for Ferry and Hoggle.
- 24:09Okay. JD what creature is actually in
- 24:12the movie before the worm, and I'm not counting the Goblins
- 24:16that are in her bedroom was talking about when she Begins
- 24:18the quest. I don't know what they're
- 24:21called, but The eyeball plants? Yeah, they don't actually have a
- 24:28name. But yeah, I'm counting Counting
- 24:30that technically those plants with the moving eyeballs are in
- 24:35there before she sees the Worm. But the other two got it, and
- 24:39JD, excellent work with the nameless eyeball plan.
- 24:43That's right. Question 3, in Magic Dance, the
- 24:47three groups of items that follow the question.
- 24:50What kind of magic spell to use? Shan slimers snails.
- 24:58Puppy dogs. Tails funder lightning.
- 25:00Correct. Question for the three things
- 25:05that Jairus crystal ball turns into when he encounters Sarah in
- 25:10her home. JD a snake.
- 25:17A snake is one. Are you?
- 25:20Are you? I assume you're counting what
- 25:23the snake turns into. Yeah that's that's kind of what
- 25:25I mean the snake turns into A cloth that I think is a scarf or
- 25:35handkerchief. Yeah, I had written a scarf, but
- 25:38I will count a cloth that is a scarf or a handkerchief as a
- 25:42cloth. And then that turns into a
- 25:45little Goblin. Yes, itty-bitty little fuzzy
- 25:48Goblin. Yes, question 5.
- 25:52The three characters, who swear in the film?
- 25:56Labyrinth counting Dam as a swear.
- 26:04Shan I know Hoggle is definitely one of them seems that damn a
- 26:08lot. He sure does. one of the door,
- 26:15knockers Do you have a third guest sir didymus?
- 26:20Okay, it's not either of those two, but definitely get a point
- 26:23for Hoggle. Okay, j.d.
- 26:26Sarah, right. Yes.
- 26:27He's getting of the film. Sarah says, damn, at least once
- 26:32there is another character though.
- 26:35And I'll tell you this one isn't damn. oh, I want to say jareth
- 26:45know the wise man's hat says, that something is a load of
- 26:51crap. Okay.
- 26:54Okay, fine. It's a weird movie.
- 26:57I don't miss your Muppet movie as well or Henson, not
- 27:02technically the Muppets, but still, and this question has
- 27:05more than three answers, but you can only get a maximum of three
- 27:09points. Regardless, Any of the three
- 27:12books in Sarah's bedroom? J.d.
- 27:20The Wizard of Oz. Where the Wild Things Are, hmm.
- 27:28And Alice in Wonderland. Yes, those are three books in
- 27:32her bedroom other choices. Snow White.
- 27:37Oh wait, this is Shannon. Not get those sand.
- 27:40Would you like to guess any other ones?
- 27:42Oh no white would help us will be dick.
- 27:53No, no okay. Yeah.
- 27:55So the other ones are Snow White.
- 27:58Book of Grimm's Fairy Tales and a book called The Labyrinth.
- 28:05It makes sense. I guess that details the plot of
- 28:08the movie. Did you notice that that copy of
- 28:13Snow? White was not just the story of
- 28:16Snow White, but it was like, Walt Disney, Snow White annual
- 28:20know I did it something strange and they clearly are using that
- 28:25as a stand-in for Snow White, which would be a very short
- 28:28story if they put that actual book there.
- 28:30Yeah, that's true. That wouldn't be its own right
- 28:33book. In fact, it would be included in
- 28:35the Grimm's Fairy Tales book next to it.
- 28:38Good point didn't notice that you could You could have saved
- 28:42that for the, the stump me round gotten yourself 10 points right
- 28:46there. But before we get to that round,
- 28:50we have 11 final main trivia round that I call the people in
- 28:57your neighborhood. This is a game about the people
- 29:01who made the film Labyrinth possible.
- 29:04Everyone knows about the work that Jim Henson David Bowie and
- 29:07Jennifer Connelly did to make the film, but it took a village.
- 29:11Age of talented. Creatives to make labyrinth.
- 29:14In this round, I'm going to ask you about the real life, people
- 29:17behind Labyrinth. Each of these questions is worth
- 29:21one point. However, getting some questions.
- 29:24Correct will trigger bonus questions which are harder and
- 29:28worth three points again. Wait, until I'm done asking to
- 29:31buzz in. Let's get started question 1.
- 29:36Jim Henson turned to this acclaimed director for help
- 29:39producing and editing the film. Shan Turtle Lucas.
- 29:47It is George. Lucas question to this actress.
- 29:51Famous for her role, on Star Trek.
- 29:54The Next Generation choreographed, some of the
- 29:57dancing in the movie. JD Gates McFadden, it is Gates
- 30:05McFadden. Credited at the time.
- 30:07As I mean, this is not for any point Errol McFadden.
- 30:11Yeah, Cheryl McFadden, she was, she was going by that name at
- 30:14the time, JD a bonus question for potential other points.
- 30:19What are two other Henson projects that she choreographed?
- 30:25No idea. I mean, I would guess the
- 30:27Muppets Take Manhattan. Just because, you know, I hope
- 30:31I'm not spoiling Another question by saying, she's in
- 30:33that she sure is in that. I, What else would need
- 30:40choreography? Did it.
- 30:42She new choreography for something in the Dark Crystal on
- 30:45forgetting. Those are the correct two
- 30:47answers. I have laughs.
- 30:48No idea, I believe she's credited.
- 30:51As a choreographer for movement in Dark, Crystal for helping
- 30:57sort of the performers decide like, how was sexist move?
- 31:01Every puppet has movement. That's what makes it a puppet.
- 31:05Yes, it wouldn't be a puppet. Otherwise, it would be a statue.
- 31:09Org. All she also did dream child but
- 31:13that's only partially a Henson project.
- 31:16Question 3, Sarah's, baby brother, is played by this
- 31:19actual baby? Who would grow up to be an
- 31:22artist and employee of the Henson Creature Shop?
- 31:28Shan he'll be proud, it is Toby, froude Shan.
- 31:33What is the name of Toby frauds production company which has a
- 31:36name inspired by his role? Role in this movie.
- 31:41Something famous about his role in this movie.
- 31:46I don't expect you to know the production company but you might
- 31:49be able to guess something about the baby Toby.
- 31:53Something, something something would be like be so they were
- 31:57baby in it. I don't know.
- 31:59I don't know what I could be doesn't have baby in it.
- 32:03JD any idea, it's silly. Which is why I had to ask.
- 32:10It's a where's Waldo pajamas production company?
- 32:14So close JD really it is the stripey pajamas.
- 32:19Oh my gosh. Why did I go for the silly
- 32:22answer when we're thinking of the right thing?
- 32:29Question question for at the time, Frank Oz was busy
- 32:33directing Little Shop of Horrors.
- 32:36During the filming of Labyrinth. However, he showed up on set for
- 32:41one day with enough time to Puppeteer one Labyrinth
- 32:46character who he does not perform the voices which
- 32:50character is puppeteered by Frank Oz.
- 32:57J.d. What's he called the wise man?
- 33:01It is the wise man. JD who is performing the wise
- 33:06man's hat. By crouching behind Frank Oz,
- 33:09that's his friend. Dave goals, it is his longtime
- 33:13co-worker, Dave goals, getting really up close and personal for
- 33:18the, for the sake of the art that they had known each other.
- 33:22Long enough, it's fine. Yes, listen.
- 33:24That is not the first time they've definitely Question 5.
- 33:31The first draft of the labyrinth script was penned by.
- 33:34This Canadian poet known for writing the lyrics to the songs
- 33:38on Fraggle Rock. JD, do you have a guess?
- 33:46I have a 50/50 chance you should know this.
- 33:50Dennis Lee. It is Dennis Lee.
- 33:52Good good. 50/50 JD what. Did Dennis?
- 33:56Lee contribute to Jim's previous non Muppet.
- 34:00Film The Dark Crystal. Oh, I I have absolutely no idea.
- 34:07You've got me there. We know he wrote the lyrics to
- 34:10all of the Fraggle Rock songs or 90% of them.
- 34:14Did he did he write lyrics to A to Kira's song in The Dark
- 34:25Crystal? No Shannon.
- 34:29Do you have a guess as to what you might hire Canadian poet?
- 34:33Dennis Lee to write for the film Dark Crystal No, again again, SI
- 34:41these the bonus questions. I didn't expect anyone to know.
- 34:44He, he he gave names for all the doll, the skeksis, you know,
- 34:50your clothes. I'm not gonna give it to you
- 34:51unfortunately, but you are close.
- 34:53Okay, so, one thing and I'm saying this for the folks at
- 34:57home as well. One thing you might not know
- 35:00about the Dark Crystal is originally only the gelfling.
- 35:06English. The film was recorded and
- 35:12screened for test, audiences with the skeksis, just screaming
- 35:18and making bird noises Non-Stop and the mystics just groaning
- 35:25non-stop test. Audiences did not like watching
- 35:29a movie where, for huge swaths of time there were simply bird
- 35:35creatures. Screaming at each other and
- 35:38making terrible vulture noises but well not that's the, it's
- 35:42just, I don't know, I don't know.
- 35:46So Jim Henson hired Dennis Lee to write all of the skeksis and
- 35:53Mystic dialogue. After the film was already done,
- 35:57and had already been filmed, so apparently he had to sit there
- 36:02and match the mouth flaps. Actually.
- 36:07So it looked like, they were always saying the the lines he
- 36:13wrote, even though when everyone was performing them, they were
- 36:17just mouth flapping two different bird noises that's
- 36:21crazy. No, I kind of related, but yeah,
- 36:24I know that Frank Oz originally did the original performance for
- 36:28Agra. I believed in you.
- 36:30We also do like a made-up language for Agra, I'm not sure
- 36:34about okay Agra speaking, a made-up language, George?
- 36:36That's a great question. Yeah, and you're right.
- 36:39It is him doing the, the puppetry and it's the lady from.
- 36:44I think the omen was doing the voice, oddly enough, but I I've
- 36:50seen behind the scenes footage of Frank doing Agra and he's
- 36:53speaking English, okay? There are a few words in there,
- 36:56like, woojae wuji that, as far as I know are not English.
- 37:01I would say what I would have to.
- 37:03And maybe, maybe I'm And I am nowhere near as talented as a
- 37:09creative as Jim Henson or most of his collaborators, but I
- 37:14would have to assume the amount of exposition that all Greg
- 37:17gives. If she gave it in a made-up
- 37:20language, it would be a very difficult.
- 37:24See him to get through. Oh, it's probably again but I
- 37:29also would have had the skeksis speaking English in my version
- 37:32of Dark Crystal. So what do I know, I can't
- 37:37believe you. Tricked me onto a Dark.
- 37:38Crystal podcast. What I know how you do a
- 37:41laughter and show. No one wants to be on a Dark
- 37:44Crystal episode. I every every season I pitch it
- 37:49and every season Johannes tells me that no one will be on my
- 37:54Dark Crystal episode. So I cut it, I will be on a Dark
- 37:59Crystal podcast, just so I can complain about age age of
- 38:02resistance. Not getting another season.
- 38:05Yeah, age of We talked about that a little on an earlier
- 38:08episode of Hubble but yeah I need to go back and re-watch
- 38:14that season it in. It certainly was delightful so
- 38:18good and it should really never seen it.
- 38:21Do I need to see it you know. Well you don't need to do
- 38:24anything. I mean the okay well I'm not I'm
- 38:28not the boss of you JD but you know it's good.
- 38:34Okay. It's better than dark.
- 38:37Okay. All right then I'll watch it.
- 38:39All right. Well, moving back to Labyrinth
- 38:42from our little a little Dark. Crystal aside.
- 38:45Thank you. Question 6, this comedian
- 38:49director and recent honorary. Oscar winner was the uncredited
- 38:55script doctor for Labyrinth. J.d.
- 39:04This is Elaine Bay. It is Elaine may.
- 39:08I was surprised to learn that that famous comedian and
- 39:16director of Ishtar and other movies Elaine May punched up the
- 39:22script question. 7, this British Puppeteer who previously worked
- 39:27with Henson on The Muppet Show, does not Puppeteer any main
- 39:31characters and Labyrinth, but does appear In person, dancing,
- 39:35in the ballroom scene. Also famously one of the only
- 39:47Muppet puppeteers who was left-handed.
- 39:54J.d. Louise goal.
- 39:56It is Louise goal of an e su and the Afghan hound and probably
- 40:05characters people like better than the Afghan Hound question
- 40:108, as the contact juggler whose hand performed the crystal ball
- 40:16tricks. This person effectively was
- 40:18David Bowie's Puppeteer in the film Labyrinth.
- 40:25I don't know the answer to this, but I mean I know it because I
- 40:28wrote it down like if I were a guest on this podcast, I would
- 40:31be getting this wrong. Michael Martian.
- 40:40Wow. You didn't let me, you didn't,
- 40:43let me make up a random. Guess.
- 40:46Well, JD, let's take this again. Dd-do you ever guess Harvey
- 40:51knee-slapper? It is Harvey knee-slapper.
- 40:55How many points? 12 know.
- 40:57It's, it's Michael muffin. All right, well now it's time
- 41:04for you to turn the world upside down for me.
- 41:08I've got no power over you in this round, which we call the
- 41:12anything in the world prize game.
- 41:15This time, you guys are able to ask me anything about Labyrinth.
- 41:19Each of you will be able to ask me a question.
- 41:22If you stumped me. You will earn 10 points.
- 41:27Here we go. Let's start with Shan Shan do
- 41:30you have a question for me? Yes.
- 41:33So most no. But the original Chronic for
- 41:38Hoggle was lost in luggage and then reclaimed at the unclaimed
- 41:44baggage store located in Scottsboro Alabama where he sits
- 41:49on display today. However, when he initially
- 41:52arrived, he was in very, very rough shape.
- 41:54Can you tell me the sfx artist, who was tasked in restoring his
- 42:00face and body. This is a great story and if you
- 42:05don't know that, there's a ha go on display at an airport because
- 42:09he got lost in the baggage claim.
- 42:13And you gotta Wonder being the airport employee who found that
- 42:18just opened a trunk and there was a rotting dorf inside of it.
- 42:25But I do not actually know the answer to this question so I
- 42:30could guess Harvey knee-slapper Like JD did, but I don't think
- 42:34that's right Sherilyn, right Sam.
- 42:37What is the answer to the question?
- 42:39The name would be Gary. So, what's car?
- 42:44I hope I said that last name, right?
- 42:48Well, if you're out there Gary, I'm sorry if we pronounce your
- 42:52name wrong, but thank you for your service.
- 42:55Thank you for your service to airports and rotting dorf,
- 43:00puppets everywhere. It's 10 points Shan, let's move
- 43:05to JD JD. Do you have a question for me?
- 43:08Becca, I have struggled so much to pick one.
- 43:11And I am having to pick from a mental list right now because I
- 43:15was so undecisive about it. Okay.
- 43:20Okay. Okay.
- 43:23One of the neat things about Labyrinth is that everything in
- 43:27the world of Labyrinth looks like it could only exist in the
- 43:31world of levered, they had to make every day.
- 43:32They couldn't reuse Muppet characters or they would have
- 43:35looked. Umm uppity, they couldn't have,
- 43:37they couldn't reuse gelfling characters.
- 43:38So they would have looked to go funny.
- 43:41Yeah, people would have just fallen asleep as soon as they
- 43:43sat down. This is true, this is true.
- 43:46However, there's one type of puppet creature.
- 43:50That they used in The Dark Crystal that is reused in
- 43:54Labyrinth, it's not named in Labyrinth, it is - The Dark
- 43:57Crystal. Can you tell me what this type
- 43:59of creature is? Oh, great question.
- 44:03Great question. This feels like the kind of
- 44:06thing that usually, I'm all about in in these episodes of
- 44:11this show and on tough pigs, but I don't actually know which
- 44:17which is the puppet, that's reused.
- 44:20Because you've kind of trap me on a Dark Crystal podcast right
- 44:23now and and that's not where I wanted to be JD.
- 44:28I'm gonna guess a land Strider and I just wasn't paying
- 44:33attention and it's just there this giant giant creature.
- 44:39That'd be great. That'd be really great.
- 44:43It would actually save Sarah a lot of time if that was true
- 44:46because then she could get on. Its back climb over the walls of
- 44:50the laboratory. Just walk across the top.
- 44:52Yeah, that would be brilliant. No, actually it's the crawleys.
- 44:58You remember the crawleys? Those are the cheap toys that.
- 45:01They just bought at the store. They're these little furry,
- 45:05feathery things on strings that they pull along.
- 45:08Wrong to have it, Scurry along the floors in the Dark Crystal
- 45:12and it's what they, what the skeksis eat.
- 45:16They that's when that's when you hear the name of them out loud
- 45:19in the Dark Crystal, that's what they're eating.
- 45:21And then in the goblin City in Labyrinth.
- 45:23If you look there scurrying around there running around on
- 45:26the ground, there's one going up a wall.
- 45:29No kidding, good. Good to know.
- 45:32No, I'm just picturing a bunch of worms on a string and
- 45:35Labyrinth like the ones with the little.
- 45:38I also lies in hot pink and yellow.
- 45:41This is the funny thing about it of all the brilliant puppets,
- 45:44they could have reused. They pick the cat toys that they
- 45:48put little wires on. That's what they bring back.
- 45:51The greatest hit from The Dark Crystal, they're like audiences
- 45:54didn't respond to this movie. I think what they They might
- 45:59have liked was the cat toys. Mmm.
- 46:02And then they bring It full circle when a Christmas toy.
- 46:04Premiered, a couple years later. Yes.
- 46:07Um, All right, so JD you've also earned yourself 10 points.
- 46:13So now I have to do a little bit of arithmetic and total up the
- 46:17scores as they stand. All right, it's time for our
- 46:21final number, in the game, say the word.
- 46:25So like the final round of that other game show in this game,
- 46:29you can wager any amount of points.
- 46:33The winner gets those points back.
- 46:35The loser, loses them. However, unlike that other game
- 46:40show, you'll get to hear the question before you wager.
- 46:44You'll also get to hear your score.
- 46:46So currently our score is Shan has 41 points and JD you have 62
- 46:55points. So JD's got the lead but this
- 46:59could be anyone's game provided how you bet.
- 47:03And if you know the answer to this last one, I know the stakes
- 47:06have never been higher. What if you lose this Muppet
- 47:10quiz show? So here's the question.
- 47:14Everybody's favorite song in Labyrinth is Magic, Dance, David
- 47:19Bowie base to the intro and Bridge of magic dance on
- 47:25dialogue, from a 1947 comedy film.
- 47:30Where the speaker was reminded of a, man with the power of who
- 47:34do Name the movie. The actor who starts this
- 47:40exchange, or the actress, who reminds him of the man who ever
- 47:45gets more of these three things. Correct will win the points.
- 47:51So name of the 1947 comedy, the actor, who delivers this
- 47:56dialogue, in the 1947 comedy, and the actress who he is
- 48:03talking about when he says this, I will say.
- 48:10For you too. And for those of you playing
- 48:12along at home even if you don't know this movie you do know this
- 48:19actor and actress they are people, you know.
- 48:24All right so Neither of our guests seemed extremely
- 48:30confident in their answer. So let's go through what you
- 48:37guys, respondent. Let's start with Shan Shan Shan
- 48:43you bet, 25 points. What were you thinking this,
- 48:48this, this classic comedy exchange might have come from
- 48:52also thinking like, you know, 1947 comedy, and I know I'm
- 48:58assuming the original Nutty Professor came around that time
- 49:02so I guess that is the movie I guess the actor Jerry Lewis is
- 49:06the actor and then actors I totally just frueh guess Doris
- 49:11Day. You Said Doris Day with three
- 49:15question marks yet again thinking in the right era you
- 49:19know JD you bet 12 points. So what movie were you thinking
- 49:26of and this is a real classic that you chose.
- 49:29Yes, I suggested the movie was hot dog.
- 49:34It's 1947 everyone just because I've seen it a lot on TCM.
- 49:38It's on all the time and no, I see.
- 49:44This was the trouble when I watched the movie the other
- 49:46night. I remember thinking, oh she's
- 49:48going to ask about what classic movie.
- 49:50He's pulling that from. I got to remember to look this
- 49:53up and then I didn't however, I was reasonably Confident that
- 49:58the actor was Cary, Grant had no memory of who the actress was.
- 50:02So I put Veronica Lake because I know that's about the right era.
- 50:06Can't. Yeah.
- 50:06You you guys are both both thinking in the right era.
- 50:09So surprisingly the movie was not hot dog.
- 50:12It's 1947 everyone because I think Bowie never saw that.
- 50:18It was the movie, The Bachelor, and the bobby-soxer, which is a
- 50:24movie that if it were night 18:47, you could pay money and c
- 50:30and the D actress in particular who reminded was reminiscent of
- 50:38the man, with the power of who do was the one and only animal
- 50:43crackers herself Shirley Temple. Oh okay.
- 50:50But JD You are correct. It was Cary Grant's.
- 50:59Thank you. Your, your, your wild, guess of
- 51:02actors from the 40s paid off in that regard.
- 51:07So, yeah, I still have no idea why this is included.
- 51:10Like why Bowie chose to reference this movie that we
- 51:14otherwise don't know. I don't know.
- 51:17And tragically we can't ask him but what I can do And what I do
- 51:24know is that our winner today with a score of 74 points is JD.
- 51:32So JD you are today's winner and today's toughest Pig.
- 51:39So JD, you win your choice of prizes.
- 51:43Oh boy, oh boy. I know, I know.
- 51:44It's so exciting. Fabulous prizes were promised
- 51:48you and your choice of prizes. You either win a peach.
- 51:53That may or may not put you to sleep or a magnet.
- 51:58I made of Ludo. Okay.
- 52:00So I have to ask a question. Yes.
- 52:04Because the peach have a little worm in it, but instead of being
- 52:08a worm, the way that the, the puppet worm is a talking worm.
- 52:13This worm is just a work. No.
- 52:16It actually has a Crawley in it. Oh no.
- 52:20I learned about 10 minutes ago. And now now, I'm now I'm an
- 52:24expert in Ludo. I want Ludo.
- 52:28Okay, you say it was a little magnet.
- 52:30Yes, it's a magnet. Okay, it really works.
- 52:34As a magnet using the Power. 8 power of man lets not do not and
- 52:40say we did so that brings us to the end of another one so
- 52:45guests. Where can people find you if you
- 52:48wish to be found, let's start with Shan.
- 52:51Um, I guess we're in. Mainly active, it would be on my
- 52:56Twitter at Shan Gwen sha and N Guin.
- 53:01I will mainly tweet You know, I'll do Muppets stuff.
- 53:05Sometimes it'll be video game related.
- 53:08Like Super Mario stuff. I'm a big like, mainly Super
- 53:11Mario, 64 mods, which is very specific, but it's true.
- 53:16But I also, you know, as Becca said, I am an illustrator and I
- 53:20do have my illustrator, right. Illustration portfolio website
- 53:24link in my bio, so, yeah, you can reach me there.
- 53:28Yeah. And you've done some cool stuff
- 53:30Shan. I mean, here's here's the part
- 53:32where I plug stuff that You've done, you've done art for for
- 53:36vinesauce and for Danny wine, cough of They Might Be Giants.
- 53:41So some cool stuff that you've contributed art to don't, don't
- 53:46sell yourself short and JD where can people find you?
- 53:51And I Know It kind of keeps changing as you change which
- 53:54projects you're doing, but as I make it hard very, very hard.
- 54:00So, the old accounts for bad Henson biome.
- 54:03Abed Henson Bistro are still there.
- 54:05If you want to look at what's there at that Henson bio or a
- 54:08tencent bistro. But on topics.com, there's an
- 54:12article that has a finished version of the menu that was put
- 54:16together for the bad. Jim Henson Bistro.
- 54:18I never explained on Mike, what? That was.
- 54:20Hmm, I probably should explain. That is a restaurant that I made
- 54:25up in which everything in the building everything on the menu
- 54:28is random Muppet nonsense. It could be a reference to any
- 54:32Muppet thing. When Jim Something and a lot of
- 54:36deep cut stuff that only the nerdiest of people will
- 54:40understand or appreciate. And if you like that, you might
- 54:43also like that Henson bio which was a fake.
- 54:47Jim Henson biopic script also very much, not real total
- 54:51nonsense. Becca you look like you have
- 54:55something you want to say. I was just going to say the bad
- 54:57Henson biopic got so bizarre at times and I've remember, some of
- 55:04those tweets getting pretty controversial, because of just
- 55:07how, like, Surreal. They got like, people were
- 55:13confused good but I found it delightful and I'm glad favorite
- 55:18movie is Labyrinth. So that's true.
- 55:20Is generally confusing. If you want to be confused by
- 55:23more of my work, keep an eye on topics.com.
- 55:25I'm juggling a few projects right there so I don't know
- 55:27what's going to be out when this comes out but hopefully there
- 55:30will be something interesting. A quick question JD, are you
- 55:33juggling them or is Michael Martian juggling them behind
- 55:37you? You got me?
- 55:40You got me. Well, of course, one of the most
- 55:45prolific tough. Biggest contributors he's
- 55:48juggling for all of us. And, of course, you can find
- 55:51tough pigs at tough pigs.com, or at tough pigs on Twitter,
- 55:54Facebook, and Instagram. If you like our work, you can
- 55:57consider donating to the tough pigs patreon where you can get
- 56:01even more exclusive free stuff. We also have to fix t-shirts,
- 56:06which include a shirt promoting hubba-wha So, you can let people
- 56:11know that you have a very normal taste in podcasts.
- 56:16I'd like to thank some people for helping out.
- 56:19Of course, our guests. Thank you, both, for being here,
- 56:22and putting up with this nonsense, but also thanks to
- 56:27myself because it's important to be grateful for yourself.
- 56:33So, thanks to me for writing producing and editing the show.
- 56:37Thanks to Stacy Rosen for Sings the theme music for the show.
- 56:42Thanks to Richard, Gomez for doing some new artwork for the
- 56:45show. Thanks to Johannes the tough
- 56:49pigs Muppet fan podcast executive producer and thanks to
- 56:53all my friends from the Labyrinth for being there.
- 56:57Whenever I need them the most and of course thanks to all you
- 57:01at home for being with us on hobo wha the Muppet quiz show
- 57:06and as always, it's only forever not long.
- 57:09At all good night, everyone. Hey, you remind me of a man.
- 57:19A man, a man with the power. What power?
- 57:21The power of who do do do, do, do.
- 57:22Do what up, man? Remember the power.
- 57:25Good morning screenings. Are you out of your mind?
