- 0:18Impact. Hello, hope you've been having
- 0:23an awesome week. Thanks for tuning into the
- 0:26Impact Ready podcast and being here today.
- 0:28I want to talk about purpose and not just the generalized idea of
- 0:33purpose, but kind of getting into the nitty gritty of what it
- 0:36is and why it actually matters to us to be tapped into this
- 0:41sometimes elusive term that people try to wrap their brains
- 0:46around. If there's one thing that every
- 0:49single person in any room that you go into has in common, it's
- 0:54that we all face challenges and nobody is exempt from that.
- 0:58We know that you've seen it. I'm seeing it a lot right now in
- 1:03my friends, in my family, in my clients, in my patients.
- 1:08It's it's weird. It's kind of things tend to
- 1:10happen in waves, in seasons. It's I don't know what it is.
- 1:16I don't know what astrological sign is in line with what moon
- 1:19or I have no idea how this all works, but I've been noticing a
- 1:22lot that people are coming to me with stuff that's big, like big
- 1:28heavy life stuff. And so they're facing a lot of
- 1:32challenge. And the thing that connects all
- 1:34those people and in the community that we're in, in your
- 1:38inner circle, is that we're all humans and no one gets to escape
- 1:42the struggles that life can throw at us.
- 1:45You can't avoid it. It's part of this lived
- 1:48experience, and I think it's important to realize because
- 1:52we're not all that different from each other.
- 1:55Life is a great equalizer, as my mom used to say to me.
- 2:00I know many of you have experienced that, and some of
- 2:03you might be experiencing it right now in your own space with
- 2:07your spouse or your kids or your family.
- 2:09You're cruising along, things are going pretty well.
- 2:12You feel like you have things pretty under control and then
- 2:15life shows up and it just hands you something that's completely
- 2:18unexpected and a challenge that you never saw coming.
- 2:23That's something that happened to me nine months ago, our
- 2:26family and myself going through something we never thought we'd
- 2:30have to face again, which is a breast cancer diagnosis.
- 2:33And it can feel incredibly daunting to face this stuff head
- 2:37on. But, and this is the reason why
- 2:41I want to talk about this, we also have to recognize that even
- 2:46though there are difficult seasons, they're not what define
- 2:50us. Rather, it's how we're going to
- 2:51respond and rise up through the difficult season that does.
- 2:56It's how we face the challenge that defines us.
- 3:00And so I have a question for you.
- 3:03In your last struggle, whatever you might have been dealing
- 3:05with, what kept you steady when your life felt overwhelming or
- 3:10the circumstances that you were going through felt like just too
- 3:13much? What kept you grounded or
- 3:16feeling strong when you were facing a lot of uncertainty?
- 3:21Or what kept you on track with your stuff, your progress, your
- 3:25work, your life? Feeling ease or peace when you
- 3:31were under a lot of pressure or when you're in the middle of
- 3:34struggle or something that might be just tragically hard for me.
- 3:39And I've thought about this question a lot.
- 3:42I think about it in dark nights when things feel really heavy,
- 3:46but for me the answer is, and has been for a long time,
- 3:51Purpose. And purpose to me isn't some
- 3:54theoretical or abstract idea that sounds nice or pretty.
- 3:58It is the foundation that has kept me standing when everything
- 4:02else has felt shaky around me. And I would have ventured a
- 4:06guess that you probably have had conversations about purpose in
- 4:11the past, whether it's with coach or in some self
- 4:15development class, sometimes even in health class, we're
- 4:17talking about purpose. But at some point in your life,
- 4:20somebody has asked you what is your purpose in life?
- 4:23And then for a lot of us, that purpose has probably changed at
- 4:27some point along the way. And for a lot of you, you might
- 4:32still be waiting for that like lightning to strike you and you
- 4:37to have crystal clarity on what the hell you're doing here.
- 4:40And that is totally fine. That is OK.
- 4:44I think purpose can feel mysterious and elusive so often
- 4:47to people. I used to think that it was
- 4:49something that I had to define with very hard and fast lines.
- 4:55And if I did that, then my life would all come together for me.
- 4:58Like if I had this very structured, rigid, articulate
- 5:02purpose that I could write on a paper in 10 seconds, then
- 5:05everything would take it would come together.
- 5:09And now I kind of threw all that out.
- 5:12Now, I think of purpose simply as something that feels bigger
- 5:16than me, something that feels bigger than us, something that
- 5:21causes us to feel fulfilled in our life or something that feels
- 5:25meaningful to us. And it could be our work.
- 5:28It could be being of service or creating something or being a
- 5:32parent or being a partner or, you know, being in certain
- 5:36relationships. But this sense of purpose is
- 5:40really important to us. Why?
- 5:44Why does it matter so much? Because we as humans, we want to
- 5:48feel like there's some significance to this life.
- 5:52Humans want things to feel meaningful.
- 5:54It's a deep core desire, actually, to feel like our life
- 5:57matters. It's such a deep core human
- 6:00desire and a core human need that people who don't feel
- 6:05connected to purpose, they report more frequent feelings of
- 6:08apathy and depression and loneliness and existential angst
- 6:12when they're not feeling that connection to their life.
- 6:15We want our experiences here to matter.
- 6:19We want to have an impact. We want to feel like there's
- 6:21some significance to all of this, and I truly believe there
- 6:24is. I do believe that we have a
- 6:27purpose being here on earth. What people so often miss is
- 6:32that we have the ability to assign significance to things in
- 6:37our life. Remember, it's not simply the
- 6:41challenge that we face, the difficult stuff that we face.
- 6:44It's how we respond to it. Because there are a lot of ways
- 6:47that a person can handle struggle.
- 6:49It can become our suffering. We can let it take us down
- 6:53mentally, physically, emotionally.
- 6:55We can rail at the world for being unjust or unfair.
- 7:00We can become bitter, cynical. I see that a lot.
- 7:04We can become a smaller version of ourselves.
- 7:06I see that a lot. Or we can use it.
- 7:11We can use the struggle. We can let it show us some new
- 7:15perspectives or some new views of our deeper inner strength
- 7:21that we didn't know we had or we've never really had to tap
- 7:23into. It might show us the kind of
- 7:25community and scaffolding that we have around us and let it
- 7:29show us some new paths that we could take in life that we
- 7:32didn't see before, we couldn't see.
- 7:36The point is, we have a choice team.
- 7:38We have a choice in how we see it, and the difference between
- 7:41these two paths, or choices between drifting through
- 7:46hardship versus rising up and being buoyant through it, comes
- 7:52down to this one thing in my mind.
- 7:53And it comes down to purpose. People with a clear sense of
- 7:58purpose are more resilient, they're more adaptable, and
- 8:01they're more hopeful even in their hardest moments.
- 8:05And the research backs that up. But I bet you can see that in
- 8:08your own life. If you think about somebody who
- 8:11feels very purposeful, feel is really passionate about what
- 8:15they do in their life, I guarantee you would also say
- 8:18that they're all those things resilient, adaptable, hopeful.
- 8:22I often think about our relationship with this idea of
- 8:26purpose like a tree, a tree that has deep roots that can
- 8:31withstand any storm that comes at us.
- 8:33Purpose is what deepens the roots.
- 8:36And I think as a side product of that, with deep roots, we can
- 8:41grow tall, we can be steadfast, and that allows us to see above
- 8:47all the fray. It's like if that tree grows
- 8:50really large and tall, your vantage point is totally
- 8:53different. And it allows you to see
- 8:55possibility beyond what is currently here, our current
- 8:58circumstances that we're living in right now.
- 9:01And there are a few things that I've learned over the years
- 9:05about purpose that I think is important to share.
- 9:07The first thing is that purpose is really personal.
- 9:10It doesn't have to be the same for everybody.
- 9:12You don't have to decide on something that sounds really
- 9:15moral or ethical, but purpose can be so personal to you and
- 9:18make no sense to somebody else. The second thing is that purpose
- 9:23is an ever changing, evolving driving force, and we have to
- 9:28allow it the freedom to redefine itself as life redefines us and
- 9:34reshapes us. It's like a living, breathing
- 9:36thing, this idea of purpose. By definition, it's having
- 9:40something that you're invested and engaged in that's bigger
- 9:43than you. And when you have that thing,
- 9:46when you can pour energy into something that's bigger than
- 9:48your problems and your own suffering, you don't get
- 9:52swallowed up as easily by that suffering.
- 9:56It doesn't mean you don't feel the struggle.
- 9:59You can still feel it. You can still have fear and
- 10:02emotions that come up around circumstances.
- 10:05In fact, this past year there were so many moments where I
- 10:09could feel fear rising up in me. I for me, fear is a very
- 10:13visceral experience. I, my hands get very tingly, my
- 10:17face gets numb. I can, I can feel the panic
- 10:21right on the edge. Such deep fear that can come up
- 10:25in some of the darkest moments of our life.
- 10:27Some of it's totally irrational fear, like worst case scenario
- 10:31stuff that would never happen. Some of it is logistical fear,
- 10:36like how am I going to show up or do the things that I need to
- 10:40do, or how is this going to work out?
- 10:42How am I going to earn money? How do I care for my family?
- 10:45All of those logistical fears that we have, some of it is fear
- 10:51that we'll lose ourselves. We'll lose our identity.
- 10:54This happens a lot when people get hurt or injured or, you
- 10:58know, they are going through an illness and the body gets weak.
- 11:02How do I, who am I? You know, how do I participate
- 11:05in this life that I've created for myself?
- 11:08And then some of the fear is just old fear.
- 11:12It's fear that exists because we've seen things in our life.
- 11:16We have stories and experiences and wisdom from growing up that
- 11:21can feel very old. But the point is, the fear can
- 11:25show up in a lot of different ways.
- 11:28And I'm sure that you've had that experience in your life
- 11:31before. Or maybe just deep overwhelm or
- 11:34crazy fatigue or grief feelings where you feel like you're on
- 11:39the edge and things could kind of fray apart if you're not
- 11:41careful. But I take myself back to that
- 11:44question from before. What do you do when the rug gets
- 11:48absolutely pulled out from underneath you?
- 11:50What do you do? How do you stay grounded?
- 11:53And again, I come back to this idea of you lean in to purpose.
- 11:59It's funny because back in March when I got this breast cancer
- 12:05diagnosis, one of the first things that came up in my head
- 12:07was I, I don't have time for this.
- 12:11I literally thought to myself, I don't have time.
- 12:15I can't let this get me down. I have too much to do.
- 12:18I have a family to show up for. I have a message that I really
- 12:21want to get out into the world. I have work that I really love.
- 12:24I'm really invested in this. I have so many projects that I'm
- 12:27excited about, and I'm so thankful for that.
- 12:32I'm so thankful that that was one of the thoughts that came up
- 12:34in my mind because it was one of the things that kept me tethered
- 12:39to the ground when things felt like I was sort of sleepwalking
- 12:43through my life. It was purpose in my work and
- 12:47the people that I love that really kept me grounded.
- 12:51And so I want to leave you with three things to remember about
- 12:55purpose so that you can start to utilize these ideas right now in
- 13:00your life with whatever you're struggling with.
- 13:03The first thing is that our purpose is part of our
- 13:06resilience and our ability to rise up through the challenge.
- 13:10There is no stopping life. We know that it's going to
- 13:13happen. We're all going to face
- 13:14challenge and suffering. It's part of our evolution.
- 13:17We wouldn't want it any other way.
- 13:19But all of that struggle doesn't have to equate to suffering.
- 13:23We can be in choice. So really remember that number
- 13:25one. Number two, purpose helps keep
- 13:28you from getting lost. Because when we're in stress, we
- 13:31can get hyper focused on the details of ourselves, our small
- 13:36world, our material environment. We get like really controlling
- 13:42and grabbing on and grasping on to the things around US.
- 13:45Purpose keeps us buoyant team. It's the reminder that this
- 13:50stuff is not the be all end all and that we have the ability to
- 13:53get through things that are hard.
- 13:56I think that when we lose our sense of meaning and purpose,
- 13:59that's when we can really get lost.
- 14:03And then the third and last thing is that purpose will keep
- 14:06us standing in our power. And you know, I love talking
- 14:08about power because when we are standing in power, that means
- 14:12that we have access to all the high frequency stuff that we
- 14:15want, like gratitude and hope and creativity and teamwork and
- 14:19joy. And often when we're going
- 14:21through a struggle, fear is the thing that comes up.
- 14:24And fear is just one of the quickest ways to shut off our
- 14:27power. Purpose is the potent medicine
- 14:30against it, against fear. And there's something really
- 14:33beautiful about that because the more we can step into our
- 14:36personal power, the more impact we can have.
- 14:39And the reason we care about that is because our impact has
- 14:43ripple effects beyond what we'll ever know.
- 14:47And I've been saying this to myself over and over the past
- 14:49year. Move despite the fear, Steph,
- 14:52move despite the fear. And I'll just, I'll say it to
- 14:56you right now, please move despite the fear, even if you
- 15:00have hard things going on in your life, because I guarantee
- 15:03you have such a powerful impact and you create ripple effects
- 15:08and the world needs those. I always find a lot of hope in
- 15:11this conversation because just as we're all connected by the
- 15:15fact that we're going to face challenge in life, we're also
- 15:18all connected by our ability to find purpose and something
- 15:21bigger than ourselves. We think it's some elusive thing
- 15:26or something that's hard to find or, or define in our life, but
- 15:29really it's just about connecting to your greater why,
- 15:34your personal why for what you do.
- 15:37And right now, we have this opportunity to reconnect to our
- 15:42personal why and think about what it is that we care about,
- 15:46what matters to us and what is the vision for where we want to
- 15:49be going. If we can reconnect to that and
- 15:52dig in a little bit, that's what will get us through.
- 15:56That is what is going to help us weather the storms the next
- 16:00holiday season, the next year, whatever it might be for you.
- 16:05And even though I don't know exactly what that is, I truly
- 16:08believe in your ability to use whatever that challenges.
- 16:13I believe that humans can shift our mindset from feeling like
- 16:18the victim in their life to feeling like the creator of
- 16:20their life. And I know that you have enough
- 16:24grit to be able to move despite the fear.
- 16:27So even if life is going to keep challenging you, you don't just
- 16:30have to survive it. You can rise up through that and
- 16:34just become a a different, more unstoppable version of yourself.
- 16:38So I hope that this encourages you and helps remind you that no
- 16:42matter what is happening, you have tools and you have the
- 16:45ability to connect to your purpose to help get you through.
