- 0:00Speaker: According to an article in Fast Company in
- 0:02Speaker: December 2022, people were leaving their full-time
- 0:06Speaker: six-figure income jobs to become full-time
- 0:09Speaker: YouTubers.
- 0:11Speaker: And with that being said, there are over
- 0:14Speaker: 400,000 YouTubers worldwide.
- 0:18Speaker: Now, we also looked at an article posted
- 0:22Speaker: by CBS News.
- 0:25Speaker: And according to CBS News, in March 2023,
- 0:28Speaker: people were leaving YouTube.
- 0:29Speaker: In fact, one YouTuber named Miss Rachel, who
- 0:33Speaker: sang songs for the littles, found herself leaving
- 0:37Speaker: due to mental health concerns.
- 0:39Speaker: There were angry parents messaging her saying that
- 0:42Speaker: how dare she post about pronouns or how
- 0:45Speaker: dare she post about, I guess, her upcoming
- 0:49Speaker: surgery.
- 0:50Speaker: And they didn't even say like what surgery
- 0:52Speaker: she was talking about.
- 0:54Speaker: So, it could have literally been some typical
- 0:56Speaker: kind of surgery that is just common for
- 0:58Speaker: kids.
- 0:59Speaker: I mean, having a tooth pulled is technically
- 1:01Speaker: a surgery if you have to undergo anesthesia.
- 1:03Speaker: And so, anyway, we have a grown woman
- 1:06Speaker: being driven away from her full-time job
- 1:08Speaker: as a YouTuber in order to protect her
- 1:11Speaker: mental health.
- 1:12Speaker: Yes, it's Ray from Get Real Ray, a
- 1:16Speaker: place and space for life and business tips
- 1:19Speaker: to hopefully inspire you on your journey or
- 1:22Speaker: at the very least provide you with some
- 1:24Speaker: laughs.
- 1:25Speaker: Let's get real.
- 1:26Speaker: Craving real advice?
- 1:28Speaker: Tired of feeling like every other small business
- 1:30Speaker: owner or solopreneur is raking in the dough
- 1:33Speaker: while you just seem to be raking?
- 1:36Speaker: Secretly looking for a is not as glamorous
- 1:40Speaker: as others make it look.
- 1:42Speaker: Whether you're looking to change the game in
- 1:44Speaker: your relationships at home or at the workplace,
- 1:47Speaker: you've come to the right place.
- 1:49Speaker: My name is Ray.
- 1:50Speaker: I went from corporate America to running my
- 1:52Speaker: own small business to becoming a solopreneur.
- 1:55Speaker: I'm a professional actor and dare we say
- 1:57Speaker: a professional busybody because this body is about
- 2:01Speaker: to be busy all up in your biz.
- 2:03Speaker: So, let's get real.
- 2:05Speaker: So, this actually is not a video about
- 2:07Speaker: YouTube but what it is a video about
- 2:09Speaker: it's about making sure that we don't niche
- 2:15Speaker: down so much.
- 2:16Speaker: We put ourselves in these boxes where we
- 2:19Speaker: are at risk of hurting ourselves.
- 2:22Speaker: What do I mean?
- 2:23Speaker: Hear me out.
- 2:24Speaker: Okay, so recently I was going through the
- 2:28Speaker: YouTube.
- 2:29Speaker: You guys, come on.
- 2:31Speaker: I can't be going through Netflix all the
- 2:32Speaker: time.
- 2:33Speaker: I'm a busy girl.
- 2:34Speaker: I ain't got time to watch a full
- 2:35Speaker: movie.
- 2:35Speaker: I got time for little shorts, little clips,
- 2:38Speaker: little YouTube videos.
- 2:39Speaker: And with that being said, I was surprised
- 2:41Speaker: to see travel vlogger Allison Sharp back in
- 2:46Speaker: her van.
- 2:47Speaker: So, if you haven't checked out her channel,
- 2:50Speaker: I came across it last, okay I guess
- 2:53Speaker: earlier this year actually, scrolling the tubes and
- 2:58Speaker: she had a van life video where she
- 3:00Speaker: was interviewing another van lifer and I thought,
- 3:02Speaker: oh that's really interesting.
- 3:04Speaker: And then I just really appreciated her humor
- 3:07Speaker: and candor.
- 3:08Speaker: I thought I'm gonna go ahead and subscribe
- 3:10Speaker: to this nice lady and I was actually
- 3:12Speaker: happy that I did.
- 3:14Speaker: And I'm still happy that I did.
- 3:17Speaker: I don't watch a lot of YouTube videos.
- 3:20Speaker: So, when she decided to stop living the
- 3:25Speaker: van life and to actually buy a house
- 3:29Speaker: or I think she bought a condo or
- 3:30Speaker: something and take root in one spot, I
- 3:34Speaker: thought, well that's interesting.
- 3:35Speaker: How is her channel going to change?
- 3:38Speaker: Now, being that I wasn't watching her content
- 3:41Speaker: quite that frequently, it was just me kind
- 3:45Speaker: of humming and hawing as a business person
- 3:48Speaker: and as someone who's just curious about things
- 3:50Speaker: in life, okay.
- 3:51Speaker: I'm being nosy.
- 3:52Speaker: How you gonna change?
- 3:53Speaker: I'm curious.
- 3:54Speaker: With that being said, her channel did transition
- 4:00Speaker: into a lot of videos where she would
- 4:03Speaker: sit at a desk and talk to a
- 4:04Speaker: camera, you know, ding, sitting at a desk
- 4:06Speaker: right now.
- 4:07Speaker: And she seemed to be giving advice on
- 4:10Speaker: van travel which makes perfect sense because that
- 4:14Speaker: was the world she lived for quite some
- 4:16Speaker: time.
- 4:16Speaker: And she also gave her commentary on other
- 4:21Speaker: life events.
- 4:23Speaker: And to prepare for this video, I actually
- 4:25Speaker: went through her channel just to see what
- 4:27Speaker: are some of the other things that she
- 4:28Speaker: talked about.
- 4:30Speaker: She also did videos where she would purchase
- 4:33Speaker: things and unpackage things.
- 4:35Speaker: So, it looks like she's trying out a
- 4:37Speaker: lot of different areas in order to find
- 4:40Speaker: what's her niche, what's the thing that will
- 4:42Speaker: allow her to still keep the channel going.
- 4:44Speaker: Because you have to remember, for a lot
- 4:48Speaker: of YouTubers, or for some YouTubers, when it
- 4:52Speaker: comes to making YouTube your full-time job,
- 4:56Speaker: you have, or I should say they have,
- 4:59Speaker: thousands of followers.
- 5:02Speaker: And in order to generate ad revenue, in
- 5:07Speaker: order to generate sponsorships, in order to keep
- 5:11Speaker: the money coming in, the creator has to
- 5:15Speaker: keep creating content that's appealing to their audience.
- 5:18Speaker: With that being said, Allison is not alone.
- 5:23Speaker: There are many creators who have found themselves
- 5:27Speaker: in this position where they wanted to do
- 5:30Speaker: something different.
- 5:32Speaker: When it came to Allison, I was really
- 5:35Speaker: surprised in my subscribe feed when a video
- 5:37Speaker: popped up showing her back and her van.
- 5:41Speaker: I thought, whoa, this is not good.
- 5:44Speaker: If we have niched down so much to
- 5:47Speaker: create a world where people know and love
- 5:50Speaker: us for, in this case, van life, and
- 5:56Speaker: the desire to do something different is not
- 5:59Speaker: accepted enough by our audience in order to
- 6:02Speaker: allow us to continue to sustain our income,
- 6:07Speaker: do we then have to go back to
- 6:09Speaker: the thing that we said we needed a
- 6:10Speaker: mental health break from and do that just
- 6:14Speaker: to please the audience, just to keep the
- 6:16Speaker: income coming in?
- 6:17Speaker: Now, to be fair, I do not know
- 6:20Speaker: Allison.
- 6:21Speaker: She may have just been missing living in
- 6:24Speaker: a van.
- 6:25Speaker: I, myself, have had to take to sleeping
- 6:30Speaker: in my car on occasion when I do
- 6:33Speaker: long-distance trips for work.
- 6:35Speaker: It is not fun.
- 6:38Speaker: I tried to make it fun.
- 6:40Speaker: I said, I'm going to pack this into,
- 6:43Speaker: I'm going to pack this long-distance trip
- 6:44Speaker: into stopping off at state parks.
- 6:48Speaker: I'm going to live a car life for
- 6:50Speaker: a hot minute.
- 6:52Speaker: I am going to treat myself to a
- 6:56Speaker: little takeout or I'm going to buy some
- 6:59Speaker: yummies from the grocery store to save some
- 7:01Speaker: money and, you know, eat my favorite cold
- 7:07Speaker: foods crackers from a box as I take
- 7:10Speaker: this trip.
- 7:11Speaker: And I will tell you, when it is
- 7:13Speaker: hot outside and you are trying to sleep
- 7:18Speaker: in a car, it is really uncomfortable.
- 7:22Speaker: Not only, and I'm talking a big car,
- 7:24Speaker: I'm talking regular little four-door hatchback, actually,
- 7:28Speaker: you guys, four-door hatchback.
- 7:30Speaker: So, with that being said, trying to find
- 7:34Speaker: the right comfortable position to sleep in and
- 7:36Speaker: of itself is difficult.
- 7:39Speaker: Purchase this inflatable mattress for the rear seat,
- 7:43Speaker: which is generally supposed to be like to
- 7:45Speaker: make your dog comfortable.
- 7:46Speaker: So, yes, I'm sleeping like a dog.
- 7:49Speaker: And while that was great to help keep
- 7:50Speaker: my legs from kind of having to be
- 7:53Speaker: tucked behind the driver's seat, I'm still like
- 7:56Speaker: crouched up.
- 7:57Speaker: And look, I'm 5'5", almost 5'6".
- 7:59Speaker: So, I'm still curled up in the back
- 8:01Speaker: seat laying across.
- 8:03Speaker: And when it's hot, you have to try
- 8:05Speaker: to figure out, can I crack the window
- 8:07Speaker: enough to keep air circulating so that I'm
- 8:10Speaker: not in here sweating?
- 8:12Speaker: Because if it's too hot, you can't sleep
- 8:14Speaker: well.
- 8:15Speaker: And how do I crack the window so
- 8:18Speaker: that people don't know that there's someone in
- 8:20Speaker: this car?
- 8:21Speaker: Because I don't want anyone coming to tap
- 8:24Speaker: on my window.
- 8:26Speaker: If the car looks completely abandoned, is it
- 8:29Speaker: also at risk of being of interest to
- 8:31Speaker: people who just want to create mischief?
- 8:33Speaker: Finding places to park is also a thing.
- 8:37Speaker: While I wound up taking to parking at
- 8:41Speaker: state parks, which is the safest.
- 8:44Speaker: If you can park in a state park
- 8:46Speaker: and you've paid to park there, that is
- 8:48Speaker: really the safest because people are camping, you're
- 8:50Speaker: good to go.
- 8:52Speaker: However, when you're doing things on the DL,
- 8:54Speaker: I've also taken to parking at truck stops.
- 8:57Speaker: And that's also fairly safe.
- 8:59Speaker: I initially did not want to do truck
- 9:02Speaker: stops.
- 9:02Speaker: I thought, oh my gosh, what if there's
- 9:04Speaker: some trucker out here who's going to attack
- 9:06Speaker: me?
- 9:06Speaker: And I have to say, trucking community did
- 9:09Speaker: not care two cents about me.
- 9:11Speaker: Mind you, I did have to do things
- 9:13Speaker: in a very discreet manner in order to
- 9:15Speaker: not be obvious to anyone.
- 9:17Speaker: But a whole separate video, but depending on
- 9:20Speaker: like when you're parking and stuff like that,
- 9:21Speaker: chances are truckers are sleeping in a truck.
- 9:24Speaker: And to be fair, there are other people
- 9:26Speaker: doing the same thing you're doing.
- 9:27Speaker: They are looking for a place to sleep
- 9:29Speaker: and there's nothing wrong with truckers.
- 9:32Speaker: Truckers are nice people.
- 9:33Speaker: They're just like everyone else.
- 9:35Speaker: It's just a job label.
- 9:38Speaker: It's not like some special group of people
- 9:41Speaker: or a special group of crazy people.
- 9:44Speaker: Why do I say truckers?
- 9:45Speaker: Because truck stops, rest stops are designed primarily
- 9:48Speaker: to take care of them and they do
- 9:51Speaker: need it.
- 9:51Speaker: They need so much more.
- 9:52Speaker: Can we please have like rest stops that
- 9:54Speaker: have little hotels available so that these guys
- 9:58Speaker: don't have to sleep in their trucks?
- 10:00Speaker: I'm just saying that would be awesome.
- 10:02Speaker: Sure they can go and park at a
- 10:04Speaker: hotel, but that's also like a whole other
- 10:06Speaker: huge thing.
- 10:07Speaker: But I digress.
- 10:08Speaker: Let's just get back to Allison.
- 10:09Speaker: And so heat is an issue.
- 10:12Speaker: Cold is an issue when you are sleeping
- 10:15Speaker: in a vehicle and her van looks like
- 10:18Speaker: it's really nicely, nicely tripped out.
- 10:22Speaker: I think she mentioned that she had worked
- 10:26Speaker: on it with a family member, maybe her
- 10:27Speaker: dad or something.
- 10:29Speaker: So, you know, insulation definitely can be kept
- 10:32Speaker: in mind when someone is creating a van
- 10:35Speaker: to be lived in for extended periods.
- 10:38Speaker: However, with all this being said, she has
- 10:43Speaker: the right to want to do something else.
- 10:46Speaker: That's just like any job.
- 10:48Speaker: The life of being a YouTuber is just
- 10:49Speaker: like any job.
- 10:50Speaker: I'm going to take it away from Allison.
- 10:52Speaker: She seems like she's a very nice person
- 10:54Speaker: and she can do whatever she wants with
- 10:57Speaker: her channel.
- 10:57Speaker: She can go back to van life if
- 10:59Speaker: that's what she wants to do.
- 11:00Speaker: And I hope that her decision to part
- 11:02Speaker: -time van life, as she's stated on her
- 11:04Speaker: channel, is a decision that she's doing for
- 11:08Speaker: herself because she misses it and not from
- 11:12Speaker: feeling pressure from viewers.
- 11:15Speaker: With that being said, I did want to
- 11:17Speaker: throw in just a few little notes from
- 11:20Speaker: the video that I just mentioned.
- 11:23Speaker: I will add that as someone who went
- 11:28Speaker: from wanting to enjoy living in the car
- 11:33Speaker: to really despising it and doing anything I
- 11:39Speaker: could to get together the money for the
- 11:40Speaker: hotel so I did not have to sleep
- 11:41Speaker: in the car.
- 11:43Speaker: I will say that if you've done that
- 11:48Speaker: experience of sleeping in a vehicle more than
- 11:51Speaker: a handful of times, you will find yourself
- 11:55Speaker: or it is easy to find oneself conflicted
- 12:02Speaker: and drawn to doing really strange things.
- 12:11Speaker: So knowing that you don't really want to
- 12:14Speaker: eat in your vehicle by yourself, facing your
- 12:19Speaker: steering wheel, but then finding yourself looking for
- 12:24Speaker: an excuse to go eat in your vehicle
- 12:27Speaker: by yourself, I would eat like boxes of
- 12:31Speaker: crackers or peanuts as I'm driving because I
- 12:33Speaker: can't stop because it'll take me longer to
- 12:36Speaker: get to wherever I'm going.
- 12:37Speaker: And so finding myself in my home just
- 12:40Speaker: shoving crackers in my mouth like I'm in
- 12:44Speaker: a hurry, like I have to go somewhere
- 12:46Speaker: and I can't which is not really the
- 12:50Speaker: type of behavior that I want to maintain.
- 12:54Speaker: Not feeling like my bed is too big
- 12:57Speaker: and feeling like maybe it would be more
- 12:59Speaker: comfortable to sleep on the floor or in
- 13:04Speaker: my closet so that I feel like I
- 13:06Speaker: can find space.
- 13:07Speaker: This doesn't happen often and I admit that
- 13:10Speaker: is weird but weird things happen when you've
- 13:14Speaker: adjusted yourself to being very small in order
- 13:20Speaker: to live life.
- 13:23Speaker: So another YouTuber that I'm going to mention
- 13:27Speaker: while I find this video because I I've
- 13:29Speaker: lost the video because I'm sorry I was
- 13:31Speaker: prepared and then I wasn't prepared.
- 13:32Speaker: Another YouTuber I just want to mention real
- 13:34Speaker: quick is Kali Mustafa.
- 13:36Speaker: This guy he has these YouTube shorts about
- 13:41Speaker: the dead herd case that I find hilarious.
- 13:46Speaker: I know that case was what feels like
- 13:48Speaker: ages ago.
- 13:49Speaker: It's really like only a year ago guys.
- 13:52Speaker: But he is a comedian and he was
- 13:56Speaker: on YouTube before that case but he decided
- 14:00Speaker: to take footage from the case and make
- 14:02Speaker: little reaction shorts and he did a very
- 14:05Speaker: nice job of it.
- 14:06Speaker: I found myself binge watching some of his
- 14:08Speaker: shorts and I was really happy.
- 14:10Speaker: I was like oh my gosh I gotta
- 14:11Speaker: follow this comedian.
- 14:13Speaker: He's funny and I found it interesting when
- 14:19Speaker: he actually made a post stating he also
- 14:23Speaker: does this daily vlog and he stated in
- 14:25Speaker: a video that he did not or he
- 14:32Speaker: would not succumb to pressure from people commenting
- 14:36Speaker: on his channel saying that he should go
- 14:39Speaker: back to just making dead herd shorts and
- 14:42Speaker: why doesn't he make more of those and
- 14:44Speaker: he needs to make more of those.
- 14:46Speaker: The man has the right to run a
- 14:48Speaker: vlog if he wants to run a daily
- 14:49Speaker: vlog and he has the right to show
- 14:51Speaker: all his other comedy because he's a comedian
- 14:53Speaker: right?
- 14:54Speaker: So he hasn't built his life around making
- 14:57Speaker: dead herd shorts.
- 14:58Speaker: He built his life around the art form
- 15:01Speaker: of comedy and he's created a space where
- 15:05Speaker: those who have subscribed to his channel understand
- 15:10Speaker: this is a comedy channel um this comedian
- 15:13Speaker: does have a life and he will share
- 15:14Speaker: real life stuff and so he is balancing
- 15:18Speaker: mixing both of those things.
- 15:19Speaker: But for someone to have to say oh
- 15:22Speaker: this is really frustrating for me that people
- 15:24Speaker: are pressuring me to do the specific kind
- 15:27Speaker: of content they want that's that's a big
- 15:30Speaker: deal.
- 15:31Speaker: I'm gonna share with you some of these
- 15:33Speaker: sharp comments I'm gonna also not play oh
- 15:38Speaker: dear learning how to use a computer is
- 15:40Speaker: super fun so um we have already 95
- 15:45Speaker: comments this video has only been up for
- 15:47Speaker: a day let's see what the views are
- 15:48Speaker: on this uh nope can't figure that out
- 15:53Speaker: because it's stuck on a commercial so I
- 15:54Speaker: will just I will just not worry about
- 15:57Speaker: the views but I will say we have
- 15:59Speaker: um posted one day ago yay I've been
- 16:02Speaker: waiting patiently for you to find another van
- 16:05Speaker: adventure in your heart another comment sir I'm
- 16:08Speaker: excited for you glad you're back in the
- 16:09Speaker: van even part time um it's nice to
- 16:15Speaker: see you in this video uh so good
- 16:18Speaker: to see you back in the van uh
- 16:21Speaker: yes best wishes to the part-time van
- 16:23Speaker: life oh gosh living vicariously through your van
- 16:27Speaker: life I'm so glad you're getting back into
- 16:30Speaker: your van if she don't want to be
- 16:34Speaker: in the van she ain't gonna be in
- 16:35Speaker: the van but this is the downside to
- 16:38Speaker: when you um or when someone amasses a
- 16:43Speaker: lot of their followers subscribers um around one
- 16:51Speaker: small topic I do like that she's tried
- 16:55Speaker: helping other van lifers um in terms of
- 16:57Speaker: how to make their transition for their journey
- 16:59Speaker: and like I said I I do hope
- 17:02Speaker: that she's making her decision based on how
- 17:03Speaker: she feels and what she wants and not
- 17:05Speaker: pressure or need for income um this video
- 17:09Speaker: is not designed to make any assumptions about
- 17:10Speaker: her or her life um this video is
- 17:13Speaker: designed to talk to you about your business
- 17:17Speaker: yes so niching down niching down is something
- 17:22Speaker: that I have had uh mentors or business
- 17:27Speaker: coaches whatever you want to call it uh
- 17:30Speaker: comment to me about oh you have to
- 17:32Speaker: niche down you have to niche down I
- 17:33Speaker: swear when it comes to being a business
- 17:35Speaker: mentor the advice of niching down is like
- 17:39Speaker: a therapist saying you need boundaries like okay
- 17:44Speaker: tell me why is everyone saying the kind
- 17:48Speaker: of throwing out these phrases and can you
- 17:50Speaker: tell me what it really means okay so
- 17:53Speaker: what does it really mean to niche down
- 17:55Speaker: well an example of the youtubers I mentioned
- 17:58Speaker: niching down means being so narrow that while
- 18:03Speaker: you may amass a group of people interested
- 18:06Speaker: in your business or service or product um
- 18:10Speaker: initially when interest service product changes or when
- 18:16Speaker: interest changes in that service or products you
- 18:19Speaker: may find yourself struggling to keep the income
- 18:24Speaker: coming in I am someone who has multiple
- 18:28Speaker: businesses and one of the things that my
- 18:31Speaker: business did was have offered dance classes in
- 18:35Speaker: person for young people once of course 2020's
- 18:40Speaker: pandy hit I took those online well when
- 18:46Speaker: the uh people's when the people's decided no
- 18:50Speaker: more things are open we're running out the
- 18:53Speaker: door I didn't really want to go out
- 18:55Speaker: the door I could have and there were
- 18:58Speaker: a lot of people who did they were
- 18:59Speaker: like yeah we're back in the studio and
- 19:01Speaker: I'm sure their classes were full and you
- 19:04Speaker: know more power to them but I really
- 19:06Speaker: liked delivering services online and I hung in
- 19:09Speaker: there as long as I could to maintain
- 19:11Speaker: full-time income delivering that service online with
- 19:14Speaker: that being said full-time income doing that
- 19:19Speaker: just for myself would have been difficult but
- 19:23Speaker: in order to also keep our other contractors
- 19:27Speaker: earning money it wasn't viable it wasn't sustainable
- 19:31Speaker: and so I had to modify my business
- 19:34Speaker: and I am so grateful that I wasn't
- 19:36Speaker: so niched down that I couldn't immediately say
- 19:40Speaker: oh we offer these other things or my
- 19:42Speaker: other business offers this other thing and really
- 19:45Speaker: be able to keep income being generated and
- 19:48Speaker: sustain a lifestyle without having to resort to
- 19:51Speaker: going to do things that I really did
- 19:53Speaker: not want to do anymore I set myself
- 19:55Speaker: up so that I could change what I
- 19:59Speaker: wanted to do and how I want to
- 20:01Speaker: generate my income without feeling pressure to do
- 20:06Speaker: something that I didn't and that is really
- 20:09Speaker: important it's not just the YouTube community at
- 20:11Speaker: all by the way when we look at
- 20:14Speaker: actors uh the award-winning Oscar award-winning
- 20:18Speaker: actor Matthew McConaughey he has commented in several
- 20:21Speaker: videos how it was a big leap for
- 20:25Speaker: him a big decision for him to stop
- 20:27Speaker: doing the rom-coms right because he was
- 20:30Speaker: the attractive perfect dreamy boyfriend and every rom
- 20:34Speaker: -com he's the you want to get and
- 20:36Speaker: as much as I liked his acting rom
- 20:40Speaker: -coms generally follow a formula and so I
- 20:42Speaker: was like oh you know what why see
- 20:44Speaker: another Matthew McConaughey in rom-com uh so
- 20:46Speaker: I was certainly taken aback when he came
- 20:49Speaker: out with Dallas Buyers Club and then I
- 20:51Speaker: think that same year he also did um
- 20:53Speaker: was it true true grit the true crime
- 20:57Speaker: no true detective oh my gosh I just
- 21:00Speaker: mentioned a movie and I think a podcast
- 21:04Speaker: okay um so he did true detective and
- 21:08Speaker: these performances were nothing like what we had
- 21:11Speaker: come to know him for at least what
- 21:12Speaker: I had come to know him for and
- 21:14Speaker: that decision to take a break to try
- 21:17Speaker: something new allowed him the space to then
- 21:20Speaker: try many other different types of films and
- 21:23Speaker: be the actor he wanted to be so
- 21:26Speaker: he had to move away from what he
- 21:27Speaker: had niched down to do and refocus at
- 21:31Speaker: just being a quality actor doing scripts that
- 21:36Speaker: he wants to do now the man has
- 21:39Speaker: a lot of money so he made a
- 21:40Speaker: lot of money for the rom-coms before
- 21:41Speaker: making that transition however how does this apply
- 21:44Speaker: to you well first don't niche down so
- 21:49Speaker: much that you pigeon yourself in a box
- 21:51Speaker: if you have a business or you are
- 21:53Speaker: starting a business maybe you have um a
- 21:57Speaker: business where you do t-shirts and you
- 22:00Speaker: love doing t-shirts and you your most
- 22:03Speaker: popular t-shirts are these t-shirts with
- 22:05Speaker: cartoon figures on them don't be afraid while
- 22:08Speaker: you're still making the t-shirt various sizes
- 22:11Speaker: and maybe you do the little baby onesie
- 22:13Speaker: with those cartoon figures don't be afraid to
- 22:17Speaker: look at whether or not you can get
- 22:19Speaker: your customer to also be interested in having
- 22:23Speaker: um leggings or pants or baseball cap with
- 22:26Speaker: the same cartoon figures don't just stick to
- 22:30Speaker: the t-shirt also look at maybe you
- 22:35Speaker: can set up some sort of um blog
- 22:39Speaker: or course or workshop or book instructing others
- 22:43Speaker: on how to create a business similar to
- 22:45Speaker: yours or just maybe you don't even want
- 22:48Speaker: people to copy your formula you're like i
- 22:50Speaker: worked hard for this you can't copy my
- 22:52Speaker: formula so maybe instead you offer um a
- 22:57Speaker: book about your experience creating your business you
- 23:01Speaker: ain't gotta give the inside business secrets but
- 23:04Speaker: what you want to do is set up
- 23:05Speaker: something else that you feel good about that
- 23:08Speaker: you can be known for that doesn't feel
- 23:10Speaker: like a departure from your um the other
- 23:13Speaker: part of your business that you love or
- 23:15Speaker: just what you love in general and that
- 23:17Speaker: you can also continue to have your lifestyle
- 23:22Speaker: sustained because things change all the time even
- 23:27Speaker: if you are a farmer and you aren't
- 23:30Speaker: necessarily depending on the immediate reaction or feelings
- 23:36Speaker: from the consumer your crop could be wiped
- 23:39Speaker: out your crop infestation or maybe companies are
- 23:48Speaker: saying actually we don't want to buy almonds
- 23:51Speaker: anymore it looks like um there are so
- 23:54Speaker: many nut allergies out there that the demand
- 23:56Speaker: for almond milk has declined well if you
- 24:00Speaker: gotta kill the almonds what are you gonna
- 24:02Speaker: do okay so yes you can take those
- 24:06Speaker: almonds use them to make other products you'll
- 24:10Speaker: have to look at other vendors to purchase
- 24:12Speaker: those almonds you're gonna have to be looking
- 24:14Speaker: at a lot of different ways in order
- 24:16Speaker: to take that crop and still generate income
- 24:20Speaker: from it but then what's next yeah so
- 24:24Speaker: maybe what's next is then you could teach
- 24:26Speaker: others what to do after um their crop
- 24:29Speaker: is no longer in demand now i i
- 24:35Speaker: don't know how many farmers are taking my
- 24:36Speaker: advice right now but i just use as
- 24:39Speaker: example of what could be extreme for form
- 24:43Speaker: of providing a specific item and working with
- 24:50Speaker: a specific group so being very niche now
- 24:53Speaker: with that being said if you are not
- 24:57Speaker: starting a business you don't have a business
- 24:59Speaker: you have no care for business you don't
- 25:01Speaker: have a farm you don't have a nut
- 25:04Speaker: allergy then does any of this apply to
- 25:06Speaker: you well yeah i think it does because
- 25:09Speaker: if you look at your relationships in life
- 25:12Speaker: are you only spending your time with those
- 25:15Speaker: co-workers who work at clearly you work
- 25:19Speaker: together but who work in a specific department
- 25:22Speaker: and you guys go out after work together
- 25:26Speaker: um you hate eat lunch together at work
- 25:29Speaker: if you're only spending your time with that
- 25:32Speaker: group of people if you no longer have
- 25:35Speaker: that job maybe one of those friends leave
- 25:38Speaker: so maybe you leave um maybe you don't
- 25:41Speaker: leave voluntarily maybe the company closes then what
- 25:45Speaker: do you feel that you'll still spend as
- 25:48Speaker: much time with those people well clearly if
- 25:50Speaker: you're not having lunch together all the time
- 25:51Speaker: then maybe not but how many people do
- 25:53Speaker: you feel that you can truly call on
- 25:54Speaker: after the work relationship has ended and have
- 26:01Speaker: something in common with do you guys also
- 26:05Speaker: have kids do you guys also do a
- 26:07Speaker: lot of the same hobbies i mean if
- 26:09Speaker: you were on the company sports team on
- 26:13Speaker: the weekend then you no longer got the
- 26:17Speaker: company sports team to talk about or do
- 26:19Speaker: together so make sure that you have relationships
- 26:24Speaker: in your life or even relationships with those
- 26:27Speaker: co-workers structuring those relationships so that way
- 26:30Speaker: it's not just about the company it's not
- 26:33Speaker: so niched down that if anything changed you
- 26:37Speaker: would be struggling to find yourself your identity
- 26:39Speaker: and in this case of the friendships we're
- 26:42Speaker: not talking about money coming in we're talking
- 26:45Speaker: about our value and ourself and being comfortable
- 26:49Speaker: with being able to express ourselves in ways
- 26:52Speaker: that we choose without feeling forced to stay
- 26:56Speaker: with the company that maybe we no longer
- 26:58Speaker: want to be at or ready to grow
- 27:00Speaker: away from because we have other skills or
- 27:03Speaker: just have an interest in doing different type
- 27:06Speaker: of work or in the case of you
- 27:08Speaker: being removed from the company per se you
- 27:13Speaker: want to be able to feel like you
- 27:17Speaker: have friends that will support you emotionally upon
- 27:20Speaker: that departure i know that i was heartbroken
- 27:24Speaker: when i left a job that i enjoyed
- 27:28Speaker: and i felt that i was forced to
- 27:30Speaker: leave and the people that i thought were
- 27:33Speaker: my friends from that job stopped talking to
- 27:35Speaker: me one friend in particular we held i
- 27:40Speaker: think one or two conversations post my departure
- 27:43Speaker: from the company and i explained to her
- 27:45Speaker: my side of things i'm pretty sure management
- 27:49Speaker: told her other things and that is understood
- 27:54Speaker: and expected they're not going to tell the
- 27:57Speaker: employees the private conversations that i had with
- 28:00Speaker: them and it was agreed upon um i
- 28:03Speaker: i said you don't have to tell them
- 28:05Speaker: all the details tell them what you want
- 28:07Speaker: right so maybe the company told her something
- 28:11Speaker: post my departure that made her think oh
- 28:12Speaker: my gosh i can't believe that ray would
- 28:16Speaker: do that or is that kind of person
- 28:18Speaker: but given that we had a friendship and
- 28:19Speaker: i had private conversations with her i thought
- 28:22Speaker: our friendship would extend beyond my time with
- 28:25Speaker: the company also we did have interactions and
- 28:27Speaker: things in common outside that company but when
- 28:31Speaker: she no longer responded to messages and when
- 28:34Speaker: i saw her again she acted like she
- 28:35Speaker: didn't know me uh when i called the
- 28:38Speaker: company again it was very um very official
- 28:41Speaker: and professional i thought wow i never expected
- 28:46Speaker: this especially given the fact that um the
- 28:53Speaker: higher-ups of the company weren't so kind
- 28:56Speaker: about her when she first started and um
- 28:59Speaker: didn't think she was the smartest and or
- 29:02Speaker: the brightest bulb in the lampshade um and
- 29:06Speaker: i was i was happy for her to
- 29:07Speaker: see that her career had changed where she
- 29:10Speaker: was given lots of responsibility and treated with
- 29:11Speaker: lots of respect but i thought wow that's
- 29:14Speaker: so sad that in order to feel good
- 29:17Speaker: here you felt like you could no longer
- 29:19Speaker: maintain a friendship with me and um there's
- 29:24Speaker: that right so i learned from that experience
- 29:29Speaker: that i really want to make sure that
- 29:31Speaker: i am always looking for ways to create
- 29:37Speaker: relationships that are deeper than whatever it is
- 29:40Speaker: that initially brought us together now it's not
- 29:43Speaker: always possible to expand those relationships let's be
- 29:47Speaker: honest everyone has acquaintances friends and then we
- 29:53Speaker: have deep meaningful relationships i am all about
- 29:56Speaker: having more deep meaningful relationships in my life
