- 0:00I think the worst part is that I get it.
- 0:05I really do. I'll get back to making everyday magic.
- 0:07My name is Shanna and if you are new here or homeschooling family of four.
- 0:11We are in our 10th year of homeschooling and we have a ninth grader
- 0:15and a fifth grader.
- 0:16Today I want to talk to
- 0:20the people who don't homeschool.
- 0:29Before we go any further, please scroll down and hit the big red subscribe button.
- 0:32Turn on the bell for notifications and give this video a thumbs up.
- 0:35As always, you can find me down in the comments
- 0:38or over on Instagram at Making Everyday Magic.
- 0:41Naturally, 99.5% of you will be the people who homeschool.
- 0:4699.5% of you will be the people that I normally talk to.
- 0:50But every once in a while, somebody finds myself a piece of my content and they
- 1:00don't homeschool.
- 1:01They don't understand homeschool.
- 1:03They have naturally
- 1:06painted homeschool with a pretty broad brush.
- 1:09And honestly, I get it, I really do.
- 1:14I do understand that when you hear homeschool,
- 1:18what that means to you is
- 1:21that people are intentionally trying to keep their kids sheltered.
- 1:27People are intentionally trying to keep their kids from learning,
- 1:32things about the real world.
- 1:35People who are
- 1:39maybe not vaccinators, people
- 1:41who maybe believe that the earth is not round, people
- 1:44who want to use
- 1:47the additional instruction time that they have with their homeschoolers
- 1:51to force religion and maybe to limit science.
- 1:55So I do get it.
- 1:58I really, really do.
- 2:00And that's kind of exactly why I come here and share
- 2:03is because we are secular homeschoolers.
- 2:06I always joke that we aren't those homeschoolers.
- 2:09And if you're here to understand, welcome.
- 2:11If you're here to truly listen, hey, awesome.
- 2:14If you still think I'm cuckoo, cuckoo.
- 2:16Great. Cool. Welcome to
- 2:20I just
- 2:21I want to take a minute and go through like what is happening.
- 2:27What are people thinking?
- 2:28What do people think that homeschool parents do?
- 2:31And again, I, I get it, I really get it.
- 2:34I'm out in the homeschool trenches and I see things that I'm not a fan of,
- 2:39and I'm super concerned about educational neglect.
- 2:41But again, we're secular homeschoolers.
- 2:44We don't homeschool because we want a greater focus on religion.
- 2:47We literally build our homeschool around an absence of religion.
- 2:51We are out in the world.
- 2:53My kids take classes at the Science Museum with real, bonafide scientists,
- 2:59and we continue to search out what is best for our kids.
- 3:02I recently you guys know I put up a video about designing high school,
- 3:05and I talked about offering our kids in education,
- 3:08and I got a comment that basically talked about
- 3:11it is impossible for me to offer my kids or to say that I want
- 3:15what's best for them,
- 3:16or to even provide what is best for them because I'm homeschooling them.
- 3:20And you know,
- 3:21that should be left to the experts who have like a master's education.
- 3:23And I referenced Olympic athletes and their elite training situations.
- 3:28And this person was really passionate about the fact that because I am not,
- 3:33you know, master's having in every subject everywhere, that therefore
- 3:37I cannot do these things.
- 3:39And it's really interesting to me because how many Olympic athletes,
- 3:43how many times are their parents,
- 3:47Olympic athletes, or did they recognize
- 3:51the potential?
- 3:53Did they recognize the desire, the talent?
- 3:58And they then search out those experts.
- 4:02And this happens a lot.
- 4:03And now I have a lot of statistics that I will drop down.
- 4:06I'm going to link them down below.
- 4:07You do not have to take my word for it. Please do not.
- 4:10I am backing this up with bona fide studies and statistics link down below.
- 4:14But I am in Houston ISD, Houston
- 4:18public school
- 4:20school district.
- 4:21And if you don't know, you're in Texas,
- 4:24it is one of the school districts that has been taken over by the state.
- 4:28It is one of the school districts that has teachers leaving in droves.
- 4:31So not only are qualified teachers leaving the school district, there are
- 4:37they are being replaced with people who are not even certified to teach.
- 4:42And I don't know if you know this, but as homeschoolers,
- 4:47when we want the best for our kids, when we are passionate
- 4:51about what our kids can do in the world,
- 4:55when we are very vocal and very driven and very motivated to give our kids
- 4:59the best possible thing, we search out those pieces.
- 5:03So I am not a, you know, limited and what my children can learn
- 5:08based on what I know.
- 5:09First of all, I am never going to pretend like I know
- 5:12even most of any single subject I super do not.
- 5:16I come here
- 5:16and I share to hopefully give other people who haven't found that voice.
- 5:20Again.
- 5:20I hear you and I get it, who haven't found the voice that sounds like there's
- 5:25hopefully a small glimpse into the world to know that they are not alone.
- 5:30And what that means is that we are out here
- 5:33searching out the best for our kids, and we are organizing
- 5:37and curating and sourcing things that are the absolute possible best.
- 5:41So again, no, my kids are not limited by my knowledge.
- 5:45If so, they would have a theory.
- 5:47Very very small educational world.
- 5:50What I do, what I'm passionate about, in service
- 5:54to their education is that I am searching out.
- 5:58For example, this year they're taking classes with scientists
- 6:01at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.
- 6:03Real, true, bonafide scientists.
- 6:05Their music instructor has a doctorate of music.
- 6:09Okay, not even a master's, a doctorate of music. Why?
- 6:11Because I couldn't read a sheet of music
- 6:13if it smacked me in the face and gave me a phonetic lesson.
- 6:17That is not a thing that I can do, but I can find the people who can do that.
- 6:23Their language arts curriculum is taught by somebody who is or was written
- 6:27by someone who is a leading voice in gifted and talented language arts.
- 6:32Okay, so this is not something that I am relying on my knowledge to. No.
- 6:38Absolutely not.
- 6:39I am just as excited to sit with them and learn alongside of them.
- 6:44They are not ever going to be limited by what I can offer on my own,
- 6:48but what I can do and I can do a really, really good job of
- 6:52is finding all the things.
- 6:53Now, I don't know if you know any public school teachers personally.
- 6:58I know several related to several and several are very good friends
- 7:01and I do not mean to be disparaging to them.
- 7:03I am a huge proponent, a huge fan of public school models, I truly am.
- 7:08They need work, they need an overhaul, and teachers need way more support.
- 7:12That is all very true.
- 7:13But my kids are not not in public school because I think public school is garbage.
- 7:17It is because I want to be able to give them
- 7:19good, better, best in their educational pursuits.
- 7:22And I know that I can do that because, again,
- 7:24I can search out the people with the doctorates, I can search out
- 7:28the handhold dissection lab that is taking place next Tuesday.
- 7:32I can get that I can provide that I can pay the money
- 7:36and drive the car to make sure that my children get that specific experience,
- 7:41and that they are not limited by one teacher's scope of study,
- 7:46or by their parents lack of knowledge or lack of masters.
- 7:51In all of the subjects, I am wise enough to know what I do not know
- 7:55and smart enough to search it out in every aspect.
- 7:59So yes, I get it, I get it.
- 8:01We are living through what I think could quite possibly be the start of a dark age,
- 8:05the way that people are
- 8:07turning their backs on science and being so loud and so proud
- 8:10and so vocal against the things that we know to be true to verifiable,
- 8:15truth based, evidence based fact
- 8:18science advancements and endeavors.
- 8:21And we live in a world where every Jewish thinks
- 8:23that they are an expert in something.
- 8:25And I assure you, I am not one of them.
- 8:27I am an expert in nothing, but I am really good
- 8:32at finding the people who are. So I get it.
- 8:35I understand if you came to listen.
- 8:38I hope that this maybe makes you feel a little bit better
- 8:43about the state of the world, because I promise you, I also am worried.
- 8:46I am worried about educational neglect in homeschool.
- 8:49I think that like educational models across the board, public school,
- 8:53private school, charter school, homeschool all need better accountability,
- 8:57better standards, and better access to things that are provided by experts.
- 9:02Now, it is not, I think, reasonable to expect every single public school
- 9:09teacher to be an expert in every single little thing that they do.
- 9:12Like I said, I know many of them am related to many of them and I love them so
- 9:15much, but I would not believe that any one of them
- 9:19was the best choice ever to teach my child 100% of anything.
- 9:25And that is because, like I do, I would expect them to want to search out
- 9:30the better options, the best options, those people who are
- 9:34experts in those fields.
- 9:35So when
- 9:36my child can get a guided paleontology lesson from an actual paleontologist.
- 9:40Yes, please. Thank you.
- 9:41When my children can get geography straight from a bona fide
- 9:46social scientist, that is what I want for them.
- 9:50That is what I will provide for them.
- 9:52So in the same way that one of them might turn out to be a piano virtuoso,
- 9:57mommy can't play a tune. And that's okay.
- 9:59But you know who can help them?
- 10:01The people.
- 10:02I'll put in their path to support them.
- 10:04My job as a parent, my job as a homeschool educator, is to pick the pieces, to
- 10:10gather the experts, to bring to my children
- 10:13the best that I possibly can for every step of the way.
- 10:16It's much like, you know, let's let's just say I am essentially the superintendent.
- 10:22Superintendents don't have to have a background in education, okay?
- 10:25I am essentially a superintendent, okay?
- 10:27And I bring in the health teacher and I bring in the music instructor,
- 10:31and I bring in the cafeteria workers and the janitors,
- 10:35and I bring in the biologists
- 10:36and the chemist, because even science isn't as basic as science.
- 10:41Okay. So I'm going to continue to do my job.
- 10:43I'm going to continue to do the best that I can.
- 10:46And I get it. I really do get it.
- 10:49And I hope that if anyone came here to actually
- 10:53listen, to understand, I'm not asking you to agree with me,
- 10:56but I hope that just a little bit, just a little bit.
- 11:00This gives you
- 11:02hope for
- 11:04the possibility that it could be a little bit different than you thought.
- 11:08It could be a little bit bigger than just
- 11:13seclusion and antisocial and ignorance.
- 11:18I hope that you realize that. It could be.
- 11:21It could be.
- 11:22There's potential for it to be a good thing.
- 11:25I don't need to prove it to you.
- 11:27I need to prove it to my kids, and I will.
- 11:29I hope that you found any of this helpful, entertaining, or informative.
- 11:32If you did, scroll down down to the comments.
- 11:35While you're down there, give me a thumbs up,
- 11:37turn on that bell for notifications and hit the big red subscribe button.
- 11:39Okay, if you want to drop me a comment, you can do that down in the comments
- 11:42or over on Instagram at Making Everyday Magic, I want you to know
- 11:47I am very serious that I take my role
- 11:50as somebody contributing to society very seriously.
- 11:54Okay, my homeschool is about open doors, my homeschool isn't about taller walls,
- 11:59and I know that there are many, many, many of you out there
- 12:02who feel the exact same way.
- 12:04And whether that means you do want to add Bible to your lessons,
- 12:07but you don't entirely negate science.
- 12:11I think that's great too.
- 12:12There are a lot of ways to homeschool that aren't scary.
- 12:15There are a lot of ways to homeschool
- 12:17that are still going to benefit the world by the products that you're putting out
- 12:20in your homeschool,
- 12:21your learners, your children, your people who you are raising
- 12:23for the next generation of the society to go out and change the world.
- 12:27So I know, you know, I know that we're doing a great job.
- 12:31You know, I know that we're working really hard
- 12:33to do the absolute best possible situation that we can.
- 12:37But to those who don't know, I really do get it, I really do.
- 12:42Together, guys, I hope that we can keep making everyday magic.
