Latest / Skin Anarchy / Science of Skin Awards 2024 - Explained & Winners
Transcript
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: This episode is very special because if any of you have been following us for a few years, then you know that one of my favorite awards that we give out is science of skin.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: This is the one that is the closest to my heart because it's so science focused, it's no BS, and it's there's only 10 awards that we give out every year to 10 brands across the industry of skincare.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: And so I'm really excited to dive into these brands with you guys and tell you why I personally love them.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Now there are many factors, keep in mind, that went into why we decided to pick these brands.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: There was a whole, you know, process that was in place and everything was looked at, you know, when it comes to really not only the science from a theoretical sense, but also the application of that science and if it's translating into results for consumers.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, with that out of the way, I want to make sure that you guys understand that these awards are extremely, extremely curated, and they're awards that mean a lot to me as a scientist because when I first started skincare anarchy, I wanted options.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: You know, that was why I started the podcast.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: And I, to this day, every time I interview an amazing brand, I'm always just baffled by how much innovation is in the skincare space and how much more is coming.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: So, with all of that in mind, let's dive in.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: So the first brand on the list is Allies of Skin.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Now, this brand really blew me away.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: When I first discovered Allies of Skin, I was like, wow, this is, I mean, this is new, you know, and it actually reaffirmed my strong belief in why we need products that are multi-factorial, multi-use, and are actually created in a way where the formula makes sense from the dosing perspective and the percentages of which ingredient is used, especially when it comes to actives.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: So with Allies of Skin, you will see and notice if you go to their website and check out their products, you'll notice their the brand is very heavily focused on creating these beautiful cocktails that allow for every single product to be very heavy hitting in the best way without irritating your skin.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: For example, I personally love their overnight product, it's a multi-acid product with retinaldehyde in it, and the percentages that are included are perfect because you know the formulation has the retinaldehyde, it has the acids, but then it also has antioxidants in there in a really jam-packed way to where if you think about it, when you're doing what you're doing to your skin and you're looking for this result of glowy skin, which is why you use a product like this, right?
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: An overnight exfoliation product, you're looking to wake up glowing, and that's exactly what you're gonna get.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Every product is well researched, and you can tell because the ingredients that are combined are combined for a very specific reason to target a very specific concern.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: So there's really something here for everybody.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: I'm a huge believer in the versatility of this line.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: I think it's something that is kind of paving the way when it comes to true formulation science in our industry, and I recommend it to everybody, especially if you're somebody who have who has tried a lot of products for things like, you know, dullness, if you've tried a lot of products that are, you know, promising a cocktail of results, but you haven't really seen those results, and it kind of feels like you're putting a lot on your skin, but you're not seeing really anything improve.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: This is the brand for you.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: You're gonna fall in love, I promise.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Next one on the list is Aramor.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Aramore is very special to me because they are truly targeting the signs of aging on the cellular level.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Now, when we talk about cellular aging and what's going on, we're really actually talking about the energy balance of our cells.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I had such a great time interviewing Aramor because what I learned was how they are really honing in on this cellular level of trying to mitigate the signs of aging before they occur.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Now, how are they doing that?
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: As many of you know, NAD Plus is a precursor to the energy that our cells utilize for any of the processes that are carried out.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Now, that can be things like turning over, it can be things like repairing themselves.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: You know, cells try their best every day to repair themselves.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Also, when it comes to your skin barrier, the integrity of your cells matters greatly, and that's where energy is really expended, is to maintain that overall integrity.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: So, you know, basically, like I like to think of it as energy on the cellular level, you know, it's not just something like products where they say, you'll use caffeine, you know, you'll look more awake or whatever.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: This is a whole different approach.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: So I really love their products.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: I have been seeing great results in terms of just using their, they have these moisturizers that I love the AM and then the PM.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: AM can be used both morning and night, and the PM can be used, I use it at night, but if I want a little bit more extra moisture in the day, I use it in the day as well.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: But the point is, you can layer this moisturizer and these two moisturizers with any other products that you have.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: So that's what I do every night, and my skin is absolutely obsessed.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Now, another reason I love RMR is because they're one of the few brands that I think are in the skincare space that have actual supplements with a lot of thought behind them.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Now, what do I mean when I say that?
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: I mean I think supplements is a very tricky area.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: I think all of us know that, right, as consumers.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: How many times do you guys check and double check and triple check ingredients, you know, in a supplement bottle, and you're trying to understand why is this in here and why is this in here?
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Well, that's the thing.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: They have constructed two sets of supplements, the morning and the night one, and really what they're doing is they're offering all of the benefits that you would want for your skin to show, and they're providing you the ingredients and the nutrients that your skin will utilize, you know, to actually have a long-term healthy barrier, a long-term healthy glow.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: So it's a really versatile brand, and they're every single product I've tried, very heavy hitting, very easy to layer with other things in your collection, and just a huge recommendation.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Next on the list is Avecina.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: I am extremely obsessed personally with Avecina because I really have erased this idea of trying to understand inflammant aging on a very deeper level.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: And I think a lot of us are understanding now that inflammation is the root cause of a lot of the things that we experience in terms of, you know, wrinkles, redness, whatever it might be, that's all inflammation.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: And what inflammation does over time is it causes your collagen to break down, your elastin to break down, your cells to lose their integrity, the skin barrier um loses integrity.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: So inflammation is like the silent killer when it comes to skin health.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: And so that's where Avicina to me really shines because they kind of were the first brand to put inflammatory aging on the map.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: And Dr.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Ibrew, who is an immunologist, a extensively trained and experienced immunologist, and she's authored multiple papers, they have been cited heavily, really knows her immunology.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: I mean, she's behind it, and every single detail about the brand has been so beautifully thought out.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: And it's really great for all of you out there that your skin leans more on the sensitive side because I think a lot of us don't realize, but like we are allergic to things and they might not be causing redness, but our skin might not love it, you know?
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: And so what happens is you have this very prolonged, you know, cycle that causes inflammation over time, and by the time the redness shows up, there's a lot of damage that's already kind of occurred by then.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: So that's where I think this topic of inflammation aging and the way that Dr.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Ebru is approaching and trailblazing in this space is absolutely phenomenal.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: The next brand on the list is Bioderma.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Now, Bioderma to me is just one of those brands that everybody knows about.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Uh I think all of you have seen The Micler Water.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Um, and if not seen it, you're using it.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: I know I am.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: And, you know, the reason this brand had to be on our list this year was because they are just one of the staples, you know, in a great skincare routine.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: I hear a lot of people lately complain about cleansing and how cleansing has actually damaged their skin.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: And it's very true, you know.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: I've had many discussions about this on the podcast.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Like we've had great guests come on where we've had a whole conversation around, you know, how much should you cleanse?
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: What are the products that you should be using to cleanse?
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: And what it comes down to is you need the right technology in place so that you're not having to do three steps in the place of one.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: That's the bottom line.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: So, bioderma, for example, they are using micels in their micellar water, and these mics are powered by a very unique technology in place that they have patented, and they're basically working to, you know, utilize normal biologically occurring systems and using them to wipe away any lipid soluble things on your skin.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Now, mice are both hydrophilic and hydrophobic, so they can attract both water-soluble and oil-soluble particles on the top layer of your skin.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: So when you're wiping your face with the bioderma micler water, you're really taking all that grime away.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: And so, what I love to do is obviously it's great for makeup removal and stuff, but I use it throughout the day.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: And what it does is it actually balances your skin over time, it makes your skin realize what it means to use a more healthier option than things like hard water or things that you would get in, you know, some cities all over the world, right?
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: When it when you're washing your face with just tap water.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: And, you know, these are real options, these are real concerns.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: And so, from that standpoint, I think Bioderm is a brand that represents how we should really approach the products we put out into this space.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: They should serve a purpose, they should become staples, and they should be used every single day to see actual results.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: I absolutely love the technologies that they are utilizing, they're at the forefront when it comes to their research and development, and I'm just a huge believer that more than anything else, we need the baseline.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: So definitely check out Bioderma if you have not already.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: Literally every dermatologist I know backs them up, supports them, is in favor of their products, and they're just a very heavy-hitting brand.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: The next on the list is Babor.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: Babor is a brand that I have loved for many years.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: Way before Skincare Anarchy started, I was obsessed with Babor products.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: I think that the reason I was obsessed and am obsessed is because they are the first brand that introduced the idea of dosing to me as a consumer in the skincare space.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: The idea of ampules was something I discovered through Babor, and to this day, their products are staples in my routine.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: Even if it's things that we take for granted now, that now that all this information is out here and something new is coming out every day, things like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, you know, these are all the kind of ingredients that you want to use, but you want the best of those ingredients.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: And I think babor is where you will get the best of those ingredients, you will get the best possible options for targeted skin concerns, targeted concerns that are utilizing very specific ingredients.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: So I really recommend it.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: I know a lot of estheticians out there, a lot of dermatologists out there love the brand, and babora is actually behind helping other brands create their own space, you know, in this industry.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: So, you know, they're just a very heavy-hitting brand.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: If you've tried any of their products, you will know exactly what I mean.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: And if you haven't, then I don't know what you're waiting for because it's a really great option.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: Also, it's very travel friendly.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: So I know summer's coming right around the corner.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: Check them out.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: I promise you will love.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: The next on the list is Mother Science.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Now, Mother Science to me is a brand that I think kind of represents what natural beauty should be going towards.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: The reason I say that is because, as many of you know, a lot of the things that we derive from nature can have very potent and positive impacts on our overall health, right?
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, after all, penicillin was derived from nature.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: And, you know, as were so many drugs that we are now using, you know, on a pharmaceutical level.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: So what Mother Science discovered was that there is this naturally occurring compound in a fungus known as malacesia furfer, and that compound they named malacesin.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: And malecesin is very good for targeting hyperpigmentation.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Now, I know a lot of you out there, especially those of you who have skin of color like me, hyperpigmentation is our number one concern.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: We hate it.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: When the sun comes out, it gets even worse.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: We're always trying to protect ourselves from it, and it's just a constant concern for people of color, for anybody really, especially if you don't want to try the really harsh drugs, and which a lot of the ones that are aimed at hyperpigmentation, they're a bit harsh, if you ask me, you know, as a consumer.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: So, in that way, I think that the brand is absolutely brilliant.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: You know, I think that the way that they have applied this newly discovered ingredient and are really kind of putting a spotlight on deriving things from nature and that how over time there have been chemicals that have been created that are really the answers that we've been looking for.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: I mean, for me, that's what they stand for.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: So, in that way, I really support them and I really support what they're doing.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: The brand is wonderful.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: I believe two products are in the range now, but definitely check them out if you're somebody who suffers from hyper pigmentation and you want something that will help balance and even out your skin tone without being harsh, without stripping your skin, without damaging your barrier.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: This is the brand for you.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: Next on the list is Stratia.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: Stratia to me is just one of those brands that you can kind of everybody can get something from Stratia.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, their price points are unbeatable, you know, their quality of the products is unbeatable.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: The chemistry is just brilliant.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, literally everything lines up with Stratia.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: So I really recommend if you're somebody out there that especially those of you with dry skin types, they have some amazing hydration-related products.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: And I really, really love the Kate just came out with a new product, which is an under-eye serum, and it's part of the collection they have with their gold serum, and it is just phenomenal.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: You know, the amount of hydration that my skin gets from Startea products is unbeatable.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: And what that does actually, just to clarify why that's important to everybody, is that if you have a brand that is able to provide you with the right amount of things like ceramides and lipids and humectants and things that really help replenish your skin barrier, you're going to overall see this giant change in the way that your skin not only looks, but how it functions overall.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: So with Stratia, I love how they approach in health.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: They're really formulating products that are serving very specific purposes and they're accessible.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: That's the most important thing.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: Their accessibility is unmatched.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: And in terms of what you're getting, it's unbeatable with the price point.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: So I know I keep harping on the price point, but I just really love that they've made their products so accessible.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: And also, cosmetic chemistry is a very, very difficult field.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: I think that, you know, to really master the chemistry of skincare products, you need to find the people who have done their homework for many years, and their founder is somebody who's exactly like that.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: You know, Stratia was born, from my understanding, they were born from a real need that consumers were facing.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: A lot of Reddit users, you know, were talking about things that they needed for their skin, and that's where a lot of the inspiration came for Stratia.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: So check them out.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: I think you're gonna find definitely find something for you, but you're gonna really fall in love with their wonderful, well-thought-out and well-crafted formulations.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: The next on the list is Symphonic MD.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: Now, this brand just came on my radar.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: This was something we recently learned about, and we interviewed them very recently, and I was absolutely blown away with the amount of science that is behind them.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: As many of you know, CBD has kind of had its, I guess, prime in the skincare world.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: We were all so much in awe of it, and it was a wonderful thing, and I'm still a believer in you know great CBD products out there, but we didn't fully understand the capacity that it has for its interactions in a formulation and its synergy in a formulation.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: So, what Symphonic MD has done is it's really found a way to use the wonderful properties of CBD to stabilize retinal.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: Now, what happens is when you stabilize ingredients like retinal, they're going to work way more effectively in less concentrations.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: You're not going to need as much, but you're going to get the effects that you want, right?
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: So that's where Symphonic MD really shines.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: They're leading the way when it comes to truly innovative synergistic skincare that's meant to highlight core ingredients that really work, that are proven to work by the literature, and they're finding a new way to deliver them to you in an OTC format.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: Huge fan of Symphonic MD.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: The minds and the brilliance behind this brand is unmatched, I feel, and I can't read enough.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: So definitely check out that episode.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: It recently came out where I got to interview the founder and the medical lead behind the brand, and it was just very, very mind-opening and eye-opening when it comes to understanding skin health.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: Next on the list is Linder Health.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: Now, Linder Health is a brand that is founded by a true veteran of the skincare industry.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Uh, Dr.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: Linder was behind PCA skin and formulating PCA skin products, and so when she did that, the amount of knowledge that she kind of poured into creating PCA, she took all of that with her and then she created Linder Health to have new options in not only skincare but also in professional grade skincare that is can be utilized by dermatologists, aestheticians.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: Dr.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: Linder has found a way to create peels, chemical peels that have absolutely no downtime.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: And I'm talking like literally no downtime.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: Because she's found a way to just avoid the whole necrotic process that occurs when you get a chemical peel.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: And so the technology and the approach is very novel, and it allows people to still benefit from the peels and what you expect from peels, but without the side effects of your typical phenol peels that you're used to.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: That terrible peeling and the terrible look of your skin and trying to heal from that.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: It eliminates all of that stuff.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: So it's very it's something that's, I think, in my opinion, very game-changing for this industry because it allows a lot more accessibility to products like this.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: That something that maybe a lot of people might have been a little scared about, you know, before.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: It kind of removes that fear factor out of it as well.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: So definitely check out Linder Health.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: I think you guys are gonna be just blown away by their innovation and what they're doing.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: And also they're not only on this side where S titian use, but their at-home line for the general consumer is very heavily focused on balancing your skin barrier, balancing the overall look and feel of your skin, and providing a real everyday option.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: Every single product is so incredibly well thought out.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: And again, this was a brand that I recently interviewed, so I definitely urge you guys to check out that interview with Dr.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: Lindor's where she is explaining all of the wonderful science.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: Last on our list is Onology, and Onology is, I mean, mind-blown with what they're doing.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: When it comes to merging pharmaceutical grade options with OTC options, that's what they're doing.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: They've basically found a way to create non-liquid formulas, right, of uh skincare.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: So they have these tablets which you can put in the palm of your hand dissolved with water.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: It can be any water that you have with you.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: Um it can be micler water, it could be water that you can take with you in a little bottle, but you basically create your skincare on the go.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: And so these little tablets, when you add water to them and you mix it in your palm of your hand, it turns into a serum.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: And that serum can be applied, and you can take it with you when you're traveling, you can take it with you at work.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's just it's like solutions everywhere with analogy.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: So I'm a huge fan, not to mention their formulas are incredibly efficacious, they're really great for, again, maintenance skincare, things that are gonna work for you on a daily, daily basis, and also when it comes to getting into the routine of practicing good skin habits and getting into the the routine of making sure that you're actually keeping up with your skincare.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: I can't think of a better brand to help you establish those wonderful routines.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: So definitely check out Anology, they have a great lineup, and that's it, guys.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: I hope you guys enjoyed this little rant of mine.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: But I really, really support these 10 brands as I do the previous two years, the winners we had in the previous two years.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, the skincare space, as many of you know, is incredibly, I don't want to say cluttered, but it is.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, truthfully, it is, and so it's very hard to find real options.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: And I just feel like when it comes to certain brands, they are just doing it, you know, they're across the board, they're doing it.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: And so I I these that's what this represents.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: That's what Science of Skin Awards represents, and I hope you guys will definitely check out every single brand that we discussed here and let me know what you guys think.
