- 0:00Speaker 1: Today's guest is the head coach at Ole Miss down
- 0:03Speaker 1: in Oxford, Mississippi, which is where we are taping today.
- 0:08Speaker 1: He's helped take that program to new heights in the
- 0:11Speaker 1: past five years. He's got his own group of fans
- 0:14Speaker 1: called the Laniacs, and it was great talking to him
- 0:18Speaker 1: about his mentality on life, coaching, and leadership. Today's guest
- 0:23Speaker 1: is the one, the only, Lane Kiffin. Yeah! Yeah, bro.
- 0:46Speaker 1: So you invited, did you invite me to Pilates or
- 0:48Speaker 1: you invite me to yoga?
- 0:49Speaker 2: Which yoga?
- 0:49Speaker 1: Okay.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Big difference.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:51Speaker 2: My daughter's actually a Pilates teacher, but yoga is like better.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Like the hot yoga part of it. Yeah. Intensity, like
- 0:58Speaker 2: make it so, so miserable. You know, that's what I do.
- 1:01Speaker 2: I control the heat in the back.
- 1:02Speaker 1: You do? Yeah. At the yoga studio? Yeah. Oh, that's great, man. Yeah,
- 1:06Speaker 1: does it remind you almost of game day out there
- 1:07Speaker 1: on the field? Like, as it gets pretty, I mean,
- 1:09Speaker 1: you're in the SEC, so it's really, this is a
- 1:11Speaker 1: really humid area. Yeah.
- 1:14Speaker 2: So I make it that way, too, like that we're playing, like,
- 1:16Speaker 2: in the swamp or in Baton Rouge, like, in our
- 1:19Speaker 2: early September games. So it's, like, really hot, so you
- 1:22Speaker 2: got to, like, fight through it.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Baton Ratchet, dude. That's what I call it.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I was trying to get you to go this morning,
- 1:28Speaker 2: so then, like, You would have gone through the misery
- 1:30Speaker 2: and the experience and then we'd like discuss it on air.
- 1:32Speaker 1: So you'd be like, man, I did get my yoga
- 1:34Speaker 1: in this morning though. Yeah.
- 1:35Speaker 2: A little slower, a little different. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:38Speaker 2: I got it in a room temp. This isn't like
- 1:40Speaker 2: traditional yoga, like flow, which that's good. And that's actually
- 1:45Speaker 2: where I started with it. Then I was like, I
- 1:46Speaker 2: got to go to another level, like make this, put
- 1:49Speaker 2: a heater in there, like make it as hot, intense,
- 1:51Speaker 2: and then like put cardio in there. And I just
- 1:54Speaker 2: like bringing new people too. And then they struggle. So
- 1:56Speaker 2: it makes me feel good about myself.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Oh, I see. Yeah, that's part of it. That's so,
- 1:59Speaker 1: oh yeah, that was me just a couple hours ago
- 2:01Speaker 1: getting it done with my Cat Williams statue right there.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I didn't know what that was, like Nutcracker or something.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's a statue of Cat Williams that they have.
- 2:09Speaker 1: But yeah, so is that a big part of your,
- 2:10Speaker 1: like is yoga like a regular part of your day
- 2:12Speaker 1: usually or your week?
- 2:13Speaker 2: Yeah, every day, every morning. It like starts my day
- 2:17Speaker 2: that way. And so there's no phone for an hour,
- 2:20Speaker 2: you know, and you gotta like, You got to get
- 2:24Speaker 2: uncomfortable and you got to sit in it. So I
- 2:26Speaker 2: figured if I can start my day, usually at like
- 2:28Speaker 2: six o'clock in the morning that way and be so uncomfortable,
- 2:31Speaker 2: that's the hardest part of my day. The rest of it, man,
- 2:34Speaker 2: I can deal with the rest. And so that, you know,
- 2:36Speaker 2: you just, you get in those poses too, in those positions,
- 2:39Speaker 2: you're just like, man, this is, I want to get
- 2:42Speaker 2: out of this discomfort. So I got to stay in
- 2:44Speaker 2: the discomfort. And over time, just, I'm able to stay
- 2:48Speaker 2: in it longer and longer and more intense.
- 2:49Speaker 1: With the heat.
- 2:50Speaker 2: And I feel like the rest of the day, man,
- 2:52Speaker 2: I'm just kind of like chill for the rest of
- 2:53Speaker 2: the day.
- 2:54Speaker 1: And what, so the, if the heat's been ramped up,
- 2:56Speaker 1: what's the next thing you think you would add into, um,
- 3:00Speaker 1: to Lane Kiffin, like the Lane Kiffin yoga experience, which
- 3:02Speaker 1: almost seems like people should wear pads to be at it.
- 3:05Speaker 1: It seems like. Yeah.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Well, we have playlists. So we got good music, good
- 3:09Speaker 2: energetic music. Uh, we put some cardio in there now.
- 3:12Speaker 2: And so we challenged the teachers, like come up with
- 3:14Speaker 2: the hardest things possible. So they just like make this
- 3:16Speaker 2: list of stuff.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Like, you know, back when you were like young and
- 3:19Speaker 1: you were like training in high school and they just
- 3:20Speaker 1: put up all the, all the different, like three by 10,
- 3:23Speaker 1: three by 15, like all these and keep going.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And then like some of the classes like are public.
- 3:29Speaker 2: So we got students in there. We got other people
- 3:31Speaker 2: in there. So, and then we like, I feel like
- 3:34Speaker 2: I'm trying, I'm trying to take Oxford to another level.
- 3:37Speaker 2: So I'm like, I want for generations it to be tough.
- 3:40Speaker 2: And so sometimes they're like, well, open the door. You know,
- 3:42Speaker 2: I'm like, don't open the door, man. We like keep
- 3:44Speaker 2: them in the heat.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Yeah. Hold them.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Yeah so then at the end like i'm like guess
- 3:48Speaker 2: what we need overtime like last week i'm like it's
- 3:51Speaker 2: march madness we need an overtime and everybody's like no
- 3:53Speaker 2: no overtime no overtime coach and i'm like kick the
- 3:57Speaker 2: field goal coach we gotta get out of here we're
- 3:58Speaker 2: making these kids tougher dang i can't believe i the
- 4:02Speaker 2: fact that somebody's trying to start generational yoga is uh
- 4:06Speaker 2: that's next level man i guess that's the lane kiffin
- 4:08Speaker 2: level you know And I like the fact, yeah, you
- 4:11Speaker 2: hit me up on social media.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I thought that was cool just to like kind of
- 4:13Speaker 1: welcome me into the area today. So I thought that
- 4:15Speaker 1: was pretty cool. You kind of have like a notorious,
- 4:18Speaker 1: you're kind of notorious on Twitter for like being like
- 4:21Speaker 1: a unique, like kind of an outspoken coach. Would you
- 4:24Speaker 1: say that's a fair term? Yeah, I would say very different. Yeah.
- 4:28Speaker 2: I looked at social media when I started, it was
- 4:30Speaker 2: for recruiting because we weren't able to text. It was
- 4:34Speaker 2: a dumb NCAA rule, like most of them.
- 4:37Speaker 1: You couldn't text them? Could you mail? Yeah, you could-
- 4:40Speaker 1: You could DM them. You could, on Twitter, you could
- 4:43Speaker 1: message them. You can message them. On Twitter, but you
- 4:45Speaker 1: couldn't text them personally? Yes.
- 4:46Speaker 2: It made no sense.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Right.
- 4:48Speaker 2: So that's why it was started. And then I just
- 4:51Speaker 2: kind of started being a normal person. I was like,
- 4:54Speaker 2: you know, I can't be a normal person as a
- 4:56Speaker 2: coach in a lot of my life. So I was like,
- 4:57Speaker 2: on social media, I'll just be normal. And then buddies
- 5:00Speaker 2: start sending me stuff. I just retweet it.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Or other coaches, like in the SEC, like Kirby Smart.
- 5:05Speaker 2: He all the time, because he's politically correct. So- He's
- 5:08Speaker 2: got stuff he wants to put out there, but he's like,
- 5:10Speaker 2: they just send it to me because they know I will. Oh, nice.
- 5:13Speaker 2: So I just kind of embraced it and ran with it.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it separates you from some of the
- 5:18Speaker 1: other guys out there. That's for sure. I think, yeah,
- 5:20Speaker 1: it makes you seem a little bit more kind of
- 5:24Speaker 1: crazy and personable at the same time, I think.
- 5:27Speaker 2: The reason why I kept going with it was because
- 5:29Speaker 2: I would go into home visits and these parents– would say,
- 5:35Speaker 2: or they'd come into my office, like when they're doing
- 5:37Speaker 2: a campus tour and they would say to me, like, coach,
- 5:40Speaker 2: we feel like we already know you. We love your
- 5:42Speaker 2: social media. I love your Twitter. I love your Instagram. Like,
- 5:45Speaker 2: we feel like we already know you. And I'm like, well, shoot,
- 5:47Speaker 2: how much is that worth? That they're already coming to
- 5:50Speaker 2: visit us, wanting their kid to go here saying we
- 5:52Speaker 2: already know you because of it. So then I just
- 5:55Speaker 2: kept going with it.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, look, you're the only, you're the only
- 5:59Speaker 1: college coach that we've wanted to meet up with. So
- 6:00Speaker 1: this has kind of worked out. Yeah. I think it
- 6:03Speaker 1: probably does have an effect, you know?
- 6:04Speaker 2: I've made it. I feel like I've made it then.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Well, no.
- 6:07Speaker 2: The college coach that Theo Vaughn wants to do a
- 6:10Speaker 2: show with.
- 6:11Speaker 1: You don't lose your job by the time this is
- 6:13Speaker 1: over then. That's the goal. That's the goal, yeah.
- 6:16Speaker 2: 55 more minutes.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Yeah, 55 more minutes. That's the goal. Is there a
- 6:19Speaker 1: difference between the Twitter lane? I'm the one putting you
- 6:25Speaker 1: in a third person. I know you're not doing that.
- 6:28Speaker 1: But is there a difference between the Twitter personality and
- 6:30Speaker 1: the actual personality?
- 6:31Speaker 2: What's kind of like, offline lane? I would say the
- 6:38Speaker 2: Twitter is probably closer to it. You know, um, people
- 6:42Speaker 2: that are around me all the time and stuff say like,
- 6:45Speaker 2: what was out there early on, especially about me or
- 6:48Speaker 2: what people think really isn't what he is. And you
- 6:51Speaker 2: probably hear that a lot, but yeah. So I feel
- 6:53Speaker 2: like Twitter is more actually how I am just kind of, okay,
- 6:56Speaker 2: that's funny. I'll just like say that or send that out,
- 6:58Speaker 2: you know, like, and so, um, I'm not an old
- 7:02Speaker 2: school coach and many regards at all, just because I
- 7:06Speaker 2: think you should always evolve. You should always not do things.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Cause it was in a book of how to do
- 7:10Speaker 2: it before and always kind of test things, you know,
- 7:13Speaker 2: like around here, we say, you know, instead of just
- 7:16Speaker 2: thinking outside the box, we create a new box. We
- 7:18Speaker 2: challenge everything, different ways of thinking things. So, um, and
- 7:22Speaker 2: social media is part of that because that's not, or
- 7:25Speaker 2: how I do a press conference or even doing this,
- 7:27Speaker 2: there'll probably be some coaches that even if they, if
- 7:30Speaker 2: you did call them up for this, they wouldn't do
- 7:32Speaker 2: it because they're And say, okay, well, that's not really
- 7:34Speaker 2: the message I want to put out.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Yeah, Kim Mulkey won't text me back. I mean, that
- 7:41Speaker 1: should be like a no-brainer. That's what I'm thinking, in-state.
- 7:44Speaker 2: I mean, you've got to have amazing Louisiana following positive numbers.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I don't know how they track that, but it's got
- 7:51Speaker 2: to be amazing.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I mean, you're one of them. Yeah. I'm not at
- 7:54Speaker 1: the flouze Johnson levels yet. I'll get there though. I think.
- 7:57Speaker 1: So why, why do you think like, cause yeah, you
- 7:59Speaker 1: do have a unique personality, right? And you, at least
- 8:02Speaker 1: your personality is able to be seen these days. And
- 8:04Speaker 1: I think that that's something that just happens more over
- 8:06Speaker 1: time with social media and more, just, we have more
- 8:09Speaker 1: video of people in general now, you know? So there's
- 8:12Speaker 1: just like so many more little moments that get captured.
- 8:15Speaker 1: So you get to know somebody's personality. And that's how
- 8:17Speaker 1: I think a lot of fans, they, I think they
- 8:20Speaker 1: gravitate a lot more towards athletes, coaches, anybody really in
- 8:25Speaker 1: the world because they get to know their personality, right?
- 8:28Speaker 1: We were talking before about social media and how that
- 8:30Speaker 1: kind of like, like why people kind of gravitate towards
- 8:33Speaker 1: certain people on social media. And I think some of that's,
- 8:35Speaker 1: that's just kind of the answer. It's just, there's more
- 8:37Speaker 1: out there. And if people are willing to show some
- 8:39Speaker 1: of their personality and not kind of follow like this
- 8:42Speaker 1: playbook of exactly how things are supposed to be, but
- 8:45Speaker 1: remain within HR, HR has a box you have to
- 8:49Speaker 1: stay in pretty much. Yeah.
- 8:50Speaker 2: But I think, I don't know if I'm, do I
- 8:53Speaker 2: make any sense? As a head coach, you got a
- 8:56Speaker 2: lot of people that you've got to please.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:59Speaker 2: And that's challenging in these type of settings, these things,
- 9:02Speaker 2: because you want to talk to recruits in that age group,
- 9:06Speaker 2: your current players, your fans, but then you also have administration.
- 9:10Speaker 2: You've got old donors that have been around a long time,
- 9:13Speaker 2: seen things done a certain way for a long time.
- 9:16Speaker 2: So there's a lot of challenges in that. And you
- 9:19Speaker 2: can't please everybody, which, you know, so I've kind of,
- 9:26Speaker 2: right or wrong, I've always said, hey, my job is
- 9:29Speaker 2: to wherever I'm working at, meaning my job is to
- 9:31Speaker 2: Ole Miss and not to potential future presidents or ADs
- 9:38Speaker 2: at other places or other fan bases. And so whether
- 9:41Speaker 2: I was at Tennessee or USC or here, wherever I was,
- 9:44Speaker 2: it was like, okay, A lot of what I say,
- 9:48Speaker 2: other fans don't like. Maybe even other athletic directors are like, well,
- 9:53Speaker 2: I don't like that he said that. But our own fans,
- 9:56Speaker 2: our own administration really like it because it's usually me
- 9:59Speaker 2: backing old fans. Miss and saying what I think about
- 10:01Speaker 2: the program, what it should be, and maybe sometimes taking
- 10:04Speaker 2: shots at other programs or something like that. Factual information.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Blatantly.
- 10:10Speaker 2: And putting it out there. And so that upsets some
- 10:13Speaker 2: people and upsets a lot of other fan bases. Well,
- 10:17Speaker 2: that's not. my job to worry about them.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. You have one fan base.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Yeah. They're not, they didn't hire me. They're not paying
- 10:23Speaker 2: the bills. So, um, I've always looked at, and I
- 10:26Speaker 2: think a lot of coaches don't do that. And I'm
- 10:28Speaker 2: not saying I'm right. A lot of coaches say, Hey,
- 10:31Speaker 2: I'm going to say things so that future employers potential
- 10:34Speaker 2: that they see it. So then they're going to want
- 10:36Speaker 2: to hire me. Um, and I've just never thought that way.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Do you, um, you already had two experiences. Like it
- 10:44Speaker 1: coaching in the sec, right. At, um, Alabama and at Tennessee. Yep. Um, like,
- 10:51Speaker 1: how's it been different here at Ole Miss? Cause I mean,
- 10:53Speaker 1: you know, some people call it the Yale of Mississippi
- 10:56Speaker 1: kind of, well, I think, you know, I was, as
- 11:00Speaker 1: you mentioned, the head coach of Tennessee, then the office
- 11:02Speaker 1: coordinator at Alabama.
- 11:03Speaker 2: So spent some time there. Um, and those programs really
- 11:09Speaker 2: over a long period of time, um, had won a
- 11:12Speaker 2: lot of games. Alabama, unbelievable championship runs. Coach Saban, probably
- 11:18Speaker 2: a decade there that's never going to be done ever again.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Too many wins, I think, for a school. Not good
- 11:23Speaker 1: for them at a certain point.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Not good for a competitive environment throughout the conference when
- 11:28Speaker 2: he was taking all the players and winning all the games.
- 11:33Speaker 2: And Ole Miss had been down. Somebody said a stat
- 11:37Speaker 2: the other day, in the last four years, so the
- 11:40Speaker 2: seniors in college here, it's been a cool experience for them.
- 11:43Speaker 2: They saw a national championship in baseball. They just saw
- 11:45Speaker 2: both basketball teams go to the sweet 16. And in
- 11:48Speaker 2: four years of football here, we've had three top 12 finishes. Well,
- 11:52Speaker 2: they only had one in the previous 51 years. Wow.
- 11:55Speaker 1: So there's been four in 55 years. They've seen three
- 11:58Speaker 1: of the four.
- 11:58Speaker 2: So the difference obviously in the programs was different, but
- 12:02Speaker 2: I really liked that. It was like a challenge because
- 12:05Speaker 2: you can come in at the top of a place.
- 12:06Speaker 2: It's kind of always one.
- 12:08Speaker 1: And then you win.
- 12:08Speaker 2: It's like, okay. Versus wow. Let's like change what's happened.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Let's like create a new winning culture, a new way
- 12:16Speaker 2: of thinking in how the locker room and the whole
- 12:20Speaker 2: university thinks about football and the program. And so we've
- 12:24Speaker 2: raised the expectations to where we won 10 games and
- 12:27Speaker 2: people are upset around here, you know?
- 12:30Speaker 1: Right.
- 12:30Speaker 2: And so, yeah, that's a different energy.
- 12:32Speaker 1: You guys were 13 points away from, 13 more points
- 12:35Speaker 1: and you guys are undefeated last year. 13 total. Well,
- 12:38Speaker 1: you need three to win. So 16 more points last
- 12:41Speaker 1: year and you guys would have been undefeated. That's pretty crazy. Yeah,
- 12:44Speaker 1: we played 13 games. 10 of them, we won by
- 12:46Speaker 1: double digits. And then the three losses were all one
- 12:49Speaker 1: score games right at the end of the game. What's
- 12:52Speaker 1: kind of different between coaching like in the Pac-10 or
- 12:55Speaker 1: I think it's the Pac-12 or something now where everybody
- 12:57Speaker 1: keeps kind of like changing their names.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think it exists anymore. It's like Pac-2 now.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Yeah, Pac-2. It was like, it was eight. At one
- 13:03Speaker 1: point it was 10 and it was 12.
- 13:06Speaker 2: And some of those teams should not have been in there.
- 13:08Speaker 2: And now there's like two, everybody else left.
- 13:10Speaker 1: What was it like? What do you notice different between
- 13:12Speaker 1: coaching and like the pack, like a different conference as
- 13:13Speaker 1: opposed to the sec, like you coached at FAU, you
- 13:16Speaker 1: coached at, um, you coached in the pack 10 to 12, eight,
- 13:22Speaker 1: you know, what's the difference you think? Yeah. Um, you know,
- 13:27Speaker 1: there's a saying like in the sec day coin, like
- 13:29Speaker 1: it just means more and it really does.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Like the passion in the towns for the football programs,
- 13:39Speaker 2: the attention on it, and really the play over time
- 13:43Speaker 2: has been dominant. The SEC's had more draft picks, more championships,
- 13:47Speaker 2: all those things. It's just different. It's a way of
- 13:50Speaker 2: life down here.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. You let people that can't even read and
- 13:54Speaker 1: they can. but they're just yelling, go dogs. I feel
- 13:57Speaker 1: if somebody come out of a coma and be like,
- 13:59Speaker 1: go dogs or something, you know? Yeah. Or somebody like
- 14:01Speaker 1: come out of a coma and be like, honey, honey,
- 14:03Speaker 1: and then just pass away. Like people's last words, baby's
- 14:06Speaker 1: first words. There's like 30 videos of baby's first words
- 14:08Speaker 1: being like SEC chance or whatever. It's a lot.
- 14:12Speaker 2: I was the head coach of USC. You spend time
- 14:15Speaker 2: out in LA. So it's just a different world out there.
- 14:17Speaker 2: And I remember I was walking through campus and I
- 14:21Speaker 2: was like, man, I bet like, 50, 70% of these
- 14:26Speaker 2: students have no idea who I am. I'm the head
- 14:28Speaker 2: coach of the football team. They got no idea who
- 14:30Speaker 2: I am. They just, they're going to school at USC,
- 14:32Speaker 2: you know, getting their education.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Um, and like here that, that like, like 100% know
- 14:39Speaker 2: who you are, you know, like the, the little kids,
- 14:42Speaker 2: like the, you know, you go to like walk downtown
- 14:46Speaker 2: and like a four-year-old's like coach Kiffin, like they know
- 14:50Speaker 2: who you are. So it's like, like, They'll complain about
- 14:52Speaker 2: your play falling in. For people that haven't been down here,
- 14:55Speaker 2: maybe that makes sense to them, like, to understand that.
- 14:57Speaker 2: You know, like, you don't go anywhere without everybody knowing
- 15:01Speaker 2: who you are, but also like that, too.
- 15:03Speaker 1: You know, kids will be like, yeah, they're like, eight-year-old kid,
- 15:06Speaker 1: maybe not four, they just say, go to hell, kid.
- 15:08Speaker 1: But eight-year-old, well, we've been winning, so don't say that.
- 15:11Speaker 1: But that'll happen as soon as we lose a couple. Yeah.
- 15:14Speaker 1: But no, they do.
- 15:15Speaker 2: They'll be like, coach, man, like, what about throwing that
- 15:19Speaker 2: tight end on the in route? I'm like, you're like eight. Like,
- 15:22Speaker 2: how do you, how do you know that?
- 15:23Speaker 1: I'm like, well, it's 11 a.m. What are you doing
- 15:25Speaker 1: at this cafe? You should be in school. You should easily,
- 15:27Speaker 1: obviously you're truant, but yeah, it's definitely, it's a lot
- 15:31Speaker 1: more intense in the South. It's just, yeah, it's. Yeah.
- 15:34Speaker 2: They're like, like coach, you're three for 14 on third downs.
- 15:37Speaker 2: I'm like, I didn't even know that. And they do,
- 15:39Speaker 2: but it's just, it just means more the passion for it.
- 15:42Speaker 2: And it's also why it's so awesome too. It's why
- 15:44Speaker 2: the stadiums are the way that they are. The electricity
- 15:47Speaker 2: before games is people walk into the stadiums. Like, It's
- 15:50Speaker 2: just different.
- 15:51Speaker 1: It's awesome. I love that. Yeah, because you guys have
- 15:53Speaker 1: a walk. I mean, I think a couple of teams
- 15:55Speaker 1: do a walk now. Do people ever try and tickle
- 15:57Speaker 1: you or whatever when you walk by? That's crazy. That's something. Well, I, like, moved.
- 16:02Speaker 2: This happened at Tennessee and then here. And maybe this isn't, like,
- 16:07Speaker 2: the best thing, but I, like, moved it a little wider. Like,
- 16:09Speaker 2: they didn't have, like, barricades on the walk.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 16:12Speaker 2: And they're like, well, it's great, man. The fans are like,
- 16:14Speaker 2: you interact with them. I'm like, well, this walk is
- 16:17Speaker 2: like a half mile. Like you're walking through like 40,000 people. Yeah.
- 16:21Speaker 1: You know?
- 16:21Speaker 2: And like, you gotta wear a suit and everything. And
- 16:23Speaker 2: then like, they're like grabbing you and everything. And so
- 16:25Speaker 2: I moved the barricades a little. There's people petting people,
- 16:28Speaker 2: petting adults.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Like a little wider. Plus, I mean, we are in
- 16:31Speaker 2: the deep South, so there's a lot of great things.
- 16:34Speaker 2: But I mean, there's just some different things too now.
- 16:36Speaker 2: You know, they're like, grabbing you and i got two
- 16:38Speaker 2: spit on her hand stuff i've.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Never hugged a man people just yelling stuff like yeah
- 16:42Speaker 1: there's a lot it's.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Like whoa can we like move these just back a
- 16:45Speaker 2: little bit maybe like maybe i can just do the
- 16:47Speaker 2: wave yeah you know hey guys good to see you.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Put the defensive tackles along the outside yeah i agree
- 16:53Speaker 1: but you guys yeah it's definitely a ton of tradition
- 16:55Speaker 1: here i mean this is like morgan freeman's front porch
- 16:58Speaker 1: down here in the south it's a slower lifestyle was
- 17:00Speaker 1: that a Mississippi is the, it's a, it is like
- 17:07Speaker 1: wandering back through time, you know? Yeah. There's a lot there. Yeah.
- 17:12Speaker 2: I can unpack there.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, it's a lot of history.
- 17:16Speaker 2: I moved here.
- 17:17Speaker 1: A lot of tradition. And everything you're giving me is
- 17:19Speaker 1: just full disclosure anyway.
- 17:20Speaker 2: I moved here because it was the SEC head job
- 17:22Speaker 2: and I thought we could win and do a great job.
- 17:26Speaker 2: It wasn't, I wasn't like, man, I want to move
- 17:28Speaker 2: to like, I'm just really dying to move to Oxford, Mississippi.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Right.
- 17:32Speaker 2: But I also didn't know much about it either. So
- 17:34Speaker 2: I judged it that way, just kind of like a
- 17:36Speaker 2: lot of people do about Mississippi. And at first it
- 17:41Speaker 2: was a lot because, because I'd spent most of my
- 17:44Speaker 2: time before that in South Florida or in LA at USC.
- 17:50Speaker 2: And I was like, at first I was like, whew,
- 17:52Speaker 2: this is a lot. Like, I mean, long winded, like,
- 17:57Speaker 2: lot of conversations slow moving oh yeah but then you
- 18:00Speaker 2: say thank you like it's not over right hey thank
- 18:04Speaker 2: you yeah and then like they just keep going yeah
- 18:07Speaker 2: oh yeah like no but no really thank you i
- 18:09Speaker 2: really appreciate it like i'm gonna go to go now
- 18:11Speaker 2: oh well um well what are you so what are
- 18:14Speaker 2: you doing tomorrow um i just met you like you
- 18:18Speaker 2: know like.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you can make, everybody's a friend. And there's
- 18:23Speaker 1: also so many famous authors. That's why the South is
- 18:26Speaker 1: so full of famous storytellers because everybody is one, you know.
- 18:30Speaker 2: But then it took me some, I'm so glad that
- 18:33Speaker 2: I've been here long enough now, five years going on
- 18:35Speaker 2: the sixth year. And now I see it completely different.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Now I go back to like South Florida or I
- 18:41Speaker 2: go to LA and I'm like, dang, these people are rude.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Like everybody's just moving fast. Everybody's just into themselves. Nobody's
- 18:47Speaker 2: like saying hi. So it's like, what I thought really
- 18:51Speaker 2: was kind of bad. Now I'm like, man, I love
- 18:53Speaker 2: it now. You know, it's like a warmth, a sweetness,
- 18:57Speaker 2: you know, hospitality and people being nice. And I've, and
- 19:01Speaker 2: I've learned to, that's actually slowed me down. Cause I
- 19:04Speaker 2: was always like, what job can I get? You know,
- 19:08Speaker 2: how fast can I move? How many championships to win?
- 19:12Speaker 2: Like just always moving. And I was like, maybe they're
- 19:15Speaker 2: onto something here. Maybe this slow down thing that I
- 19:17Speaker 2: was judging at first, like I made jokes about the
- 19:20Speaker 2: rocking chairs and people sit in rocking chairs.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:22Speaker 2: And I'm like, at first Charlotte airport or whatever. I
- 19:25Speaker 2: saw that.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I did when I was, and I was like,
- 19:28Speaker 1: you'll see somebody has a 42nd layover. They're like, I'm
- 19:30Speaker 1: going to get a little rest in. Yeah.
- 19:32Speaker 2: And I'm like, I actually saw some right away and
- 19:34Speaker 2: people were in them. And I said to some of them,
- 19:36Speaker 2: I'm like, what are they doing? That looks miserable. Like
- 19:40Speaker 2: that's so slow. And there's just two of them. Sometimes one.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Like, what are you doing? They don't even have their
- 19:47Speaker 1: phone out. Like, what are you doing?
- 19:49Speaker 2: And now I'm like, hey, they're on to something. Just
- 19:52Speaker 2: slow down. And so I've kind of said, hey, maybe
- 19:55Speaker 2: there's something to the Mississippi lane. I just slow down,
- 19:59Speaker 2: taking conversations, listen to people instead of just always talking
- 20:03Speaker 2: and moving. And now I love it.
- 20:08Speaker 1: It's definitely like the program is, it feels a lot different.
- 20:11Speaker 1: You know, my best friend has been in hiding for years.
- 20:14Speaker 1: He's an Ole Miss like fanatic. He will sit there and,
- 20:17Speaker 1: you know, he's betting on test scores. He's betting on
- 20:19Speaker 1: all types of stuff. He's betting on SAT over-unders for,
- 20:22Speaker 1: you know, foreign exchange students. So he gambles as well, obviously,
- 20:25Speaker 1: but now he's like out and proud kind of, you know,
- 20:28Speaker 1: he's rocking that powder blue the past few years. He's
- 20:30Speaker 1: really feeling the vibes, you know? So.
- 20:32Speaker 2: I have some cool, a couple of cool things happen
- 20:34Speaker 2: like that where, I was with.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Landry, my daughter at this. With Landry? Yes. Okay.
- 20:39Speaker 2: At Jinsei, the sushi restaurant. And I'm at the restaurant
- 20:42Speaker 2: with her and this, this kid comes up and senior
- 20:46Speaker 2: in college and she goes, she, and like the South,
- 20:51Speaker 2: because women know the football just as much as the men.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 20:54Speaker 2: And she's like, I just want to thank you. She's like,
- 20:57Speaker 2: my four years here have been amazing. Like, she's like,
- 21:00Speaker 2: this was like a year ago. So her first year
- 21:02Speaker 2: had been bad. So she's like my four year, the
- 21:04Speaker 2: first year, the team was bad. Then you came and
- 21:06Speaker 2: then she's like, you totally changed my college experience. I'm like, dang,
- 21:11Speaker 2: that's really cool. You know, that like, like you said,
- 21:13Speaker 2: your buddy now like feels better about wearing an Ole
- 21:16Speaker 2: Miss shirt, you know, there's like more pride into it,
- 21:18Speaker 2: you know? So that's pretty cool that we've been part
- 21:21Speaker 2: of that change and part of that experience for kids
- 21:24Speaker 2: that like, now they're going to want to come back
- 21:26Speaker 2: to games, you know? And so that's pretty cool.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Oh yeah. I mean, it's like, that's when you want
- 21:31Speaker 1: to be there. You want to be there at the,
- 21:34Speaker 1: at the angle, you know, that's when you want to
- 21:36Speaker 1: be there. Yeah.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Nobody wants to be like, man, when I was in college, man,
- 21:40Speaker 2: our team sucked. Like nobody went to the games. It
- 21:42Speaker 2: was terrible. You know, like, so it's really cool that
- 21:45Speaker 2: we've been part of that again, coming into a place
- 21:47Speaker 2: that had been down a little bit. That's another cool
- 21:49Speaker 2: part of it.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Yeah. And also like the players too, when you come
- 21:52Speaker 1: in and they've been losing, then the players in the
- 21:55Speaker 1: locker room and you come in and they just embrace
- 21:57Speaker 1: everything and, then you start winning and they're just so
- 22:00Speaker 1: excited because they're.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Not used to it. So that's a really cool thing
- 22:04Speaker 2: about turning programs around and being in those locker rooms.
- 22:07Speaker 1: To see that happen? Yes, to see their appreciation for that.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Again, where if you're just coming in on places on
- 22:13Speaker 2: top and they're just winning and they're just winning again,
- 22:15Speaker 2: they just expect it. And so they're not as appreciative
- 22:18Speaker 2: of those moments because they haven't had it taken away. Right.
- 22:22Speaker 1: You're on a pretty famous like text chain with like
- 22:24Speaker 1: other SEC coaches. This is alleged. Yeah. um kirby smart
- 22:29Speaker 1: uh sarkeesian what are the vibes on the chain i
- 22:32Speaker 1: feel like like what is it like on there i
- 22:34Speaker 1: feel like i keep it together like i keep the
- 22:37Speaker 1: group together because like one will beat the other or
- 22:39Speaker 1: they'll say something and they kind of like get mad
- 22:40Speaker 1: at each other and then they won't like text for
- 22:43Speaker 1: a week if like you beat him then he doesn't
- 22:46Speaker 1: text for a week or if they're playing each other
- 22:47Speaker 1: that week they certainly aren't going to say anything and
- 22:50Speaker 1: i'm like guys And by you beat him, it means you,
- 22:52Speaker 1: when you guys beat Georgia last year, but go on.
- 22:54Speaker 1: I feel it.
- 22:54Speaker 2: But then I just say something that night, you know, like,
- 22:57Speaker 2: Hey man, like you'll probably get us next year. You know,
- 23:00Speaker 2: like they don't like, they don't think that's funny. You know,
- 23:02Speaker 2: like then one of them side texts me like, Hey man,
- 23:03Speaker 2: you shouldn't have said that Kirby's pissed off.
- 23:05Speaker 1: You know?
- 23:05Speaker 2: And I'm like, dude, it's just a game.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Relax.
- 23:08Speaker 2: We're buddies.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Do you guys vote on how another coach gets into
- 23:11Speaker 1: the text chain? What is the. Yeah.
- 23:13Speaker 2: There's been conversations about that.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Really?
- 23:18Speaker 2: I just kind of, I actually have a, they may
- 23:20Speaker 2: not know this. we're giving a lot of information out today. Appreciate,
- 23:25Speaker 2: appreciate you coming. So, you know, kind of give you
- 23:27Speaker 2: some special insight. I have multiple ones. So sometimes I'll
- 23:32Speaker 2: say something, that guy's not in it. And that guy's,
- 23:35Speaker 2: you know, then this guy's in it. And so like,
- 23:37Speaker 2: I kind of make sure I know who's in them,
- 23:39Speaker 2: you know, when I say certain things and then, you know,
- 23:42Speaker 2: every once in a while I've got somebody who does
- 23:43Speaker 2: something and then I love, I move them out of
- 23:46Speaker 2: the chat.
- 23:46Speaker 1: No. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 23:49Speaker 2: It's, it's happened, you know? Jimbo Fisher removed from chat. R.I.P.
- 23:54Speaker 2: And then they'll put him back in.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:57Speaker 2: And they're like typical coaches. They don't know how to
- 24:00Speaker 2: remove somebody or add somebody. So it's pretty cool that
- 24:02Speaker 2: I can do it. And they're like, how do you
- 24:04Speaker 2: do that?
- 24:05Speaker 1: Yeah. Lane's one of them tech wizards. Yeah.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Coaches are a little behind. That's a big deal to
- 24:11Speaker 2: be able to remove somebody from chat. Like, whoa, he
- 24:13Speaker 2: must really have somebody teaching him this stuff.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Who's the most mysterious SEC coach to you, do you think? Um, Hmm.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Maybe Brian Kelly, speaking of LSU, you know, like I
- 24:28Speaker 2: like Brian, um, not a South guy, you know, kind
- 24:33Speaker 2: of came in. Um, and so I think maybe people
- 24:37Speaker 2: don't really understand him. Um, you know, he's just kind of,
- 24:45Speaker 2: he's a little bit different, um, than maybe your traditional,
- 24:49Speaker 2: like Kirby smart. He's like, Born and raised SEC.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. He cuts his own hair. It looks like it. Yeah, definitely.
- 24:58Speaker 1: He really does? I'm totally putting that in the chat. Oh,
- 25:01Speaker 1: I don't know. It definitely looks like somebody ran a
- 25:03Speaker 1: slant with some scissors across his forehead. Yeah, like a bull. Oh,
- 25:06Speaker 1: it's unbelievable. And here's the thing. And he shows the
- 25:08Speaker 1: same haircut from when he was playing. It's like it
- 25:10Speaker 1: never changed. And it's a children's bull. Get an adult bull.
- 25:14Speaker 1: He does. What kind of dishware are you guys using
- 25:16Speaker 1: at the salon? No, and actually beautiful man there too,
- 25:19Speaker 1: I wanted to say that, Kirby. Oh, there you go.
- 25:21Speaker 1: But yeah, like, well, Brian Kelly, they also put him
- 25:23Speaker 1: on that Lazy Susan. Remember when he first came in?
- 25:25Speaker 1: It's like, and it's a tough thing. I retweeted that.
- 25:30Speaker 1: You what? I retweeted that when he did that thing. Yeah,
- 25:33Speaker 1: he was with the quarter. It was terrible. Look at that.
- 25:36Speaker 1: I thought this was for a strip club, to be
- 25:38Speaker 1: honest with you. I thought this was for a club. Yeah,
- 25:40Speaker 1: I think I wrote something like, do you actually know
- 25:42Speaker 1: they're filming you? Like, did you put this out on purpose? Like,
- 25:48Speaker 1: you know they're going to film you when you're doing this?
- 25:50Speaker 1: I thought this was a gender reveal. And I was like, well,
- 25:53Speaker 1: what are we, what is it? Yeah.
- 25:55Speaker 2: And it's not like his first one. He did it
- 25:57Speaker 2: like the year before. I'm like, do you realize you're
- 25:59Speaker 2: like kind of grinding on the dude?
- 26:01Speaker 1: This was also a strip club advertisement near Natchez, Mississippi,
- 26:04Speaker 1: I think as well. No judgment outside of there. I've
- 26:06Speaker 1: spent time there. But yeah, maybe Brian Kelly is kind
- 26:09Speaker 1: of mysterious. I think also maybe it's just because he's from,
- 26:12Speaker 1: he hadn't, had he coached in the SEC before or not?
- 26:15Speaker 2: No, I don't think so.
- 26:16Speaker 1: And he's a nice guy. You're like at Notre Dame. Right.
- 26:19Speaker 2: You're at Notre Dame, and then you're like LSU.
- 26:21Speaker 1: I know. I mean. I know. I mean, you went
- 26:24Speaker 1: from heaven to. Yeah, that's just like, that's as big
- 26:29Speaker 1: a change as you can have. South Bend to Baton Rouge. Oh, yeah.
- 26:32Speaker 2: And the SEC, and so.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, dude. South Bend, just down there under the Mr.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Weatherall belt. Yeah, I think that's about, I don't think
- 26:41Speaker 1: they make a bigger change than that. Ready to win

- 29:28Speaker 1: Tax not included while supplies last. The SEC has historic venues, right?
- 29:34Speaker 1: And a lot of historic, a lot of like, one
- 29:37Speaker 1: thing that's interesting about the SEC is you'll have people
- 29:39Speaker 1: that didn't go to college but they will show up
- 29:43Speaker 1: at the games as if it's their school and that
- 29:45Speaker 1: doesn't happen like in as many other places it just
- 29:48Speaker 1: does not happen yeah you have people who can't read
- 29:50Speaker 1: people who can't see but they'll they'll show up and
- 29:53Speaker 1: watch a game somehow um And you don't see that
- 29:57Speaker 1: in other conferences.
- 29:58Speaker 2: So that totally happens. And I remember, so my first
- 30:02Speaker 2: taste of the South was going to Tennessee as the
- 30:05Speaker 2: head coach. And I'm coming from, I was the head
- 30:08Speaker 2: coach of the Oakland Raiders. And then I've been at
- 30:10Speaker 2: USC before this. I'm like coming from California to like Tennessee.
- 30:15Speaker 2: And I remember, I'm like, there's a lot of people.
- 30:18Speaker 2: They have a spring game. There's like 70,000 people here
- 30:21Speaker 2: at the spring game, like 50,000 there two hours before.
- 30:24Speaker 2: And they're like, yeah, at the big games, like the
- 30:26Speaker 2: thing will sell out. Then there'll be another 20,000 outside.
- 30:29Speaker 2: And I'm like, I.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Went to school here. I'm like, no, no, don't get it. No.
- 30:35Speaker 2: And then when I went to Alabama, the same thing,
- 30:36Speaker 2: they're like, no, half these people didn't go to school here.
- 30:38Speaker 2: They just, they lived in the state at one point.
- 30:41Speaker 2: So they, it's their team. It's not because they went
- 30:44Speaker 2: to school there and like their passion is unbelievable. And
- 30:48Speaker 2: I'm like, wait, you didn't even go to school here.
- 30:51Speaker 1: No, no. I didn't go to school at all, sir.
- 30:54Speaker 2: But my daddy knew somebody that did.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Yeah. I'm like, wait, your dad went? No, he didn't either.
- 30:59Speaker 1: So no one in your family ever went? No, sir.
- 31:01Speaker 1: To Alabama?
- 31:02Speaker 2: No, sir. But your whole week, your whole year is
- 31:06Speaker 2: affected whether they win or lose. Just angry the rest
- 31:10Speaker 2: of the year, whether they win or lose that Alabama-Tennessee game.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Yes, sir. That's it. Yes, sir.
- 31:15Speaker 2: But it doesn't impact you, like your job? Do you
- 31:18Speaker 2: work for it?
- 31:18Speaker 1: No. I don't work, sir. But I cheer for the Tide.
- 31:23Speaker 1: I mean, they got that one guy, Roll Tide Willie now,
- 31:26Speaker 1: and he was in the military with my dad's buddy.
- 31:28Speaker 1: But what's your favorite place to play, do you think,
- 31:32Speaker 1: in the SEC outside of Vaught-Hemingway?
- 31:35Speaker 2: Well, I don't know about favorite, because favorite would be like... Anarchal, right?
- 31:38Speaker 2: It's anarchal for you guys. Yeah, you know, like favorite
- 31:40Speaker 2: might be somewhere really easy. Like, no, the most intense places.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Yeah, or just which one of you get out there
- 31:48Speaker 1: and you're like, man, this is freaking majestic. How about that?
- 31:50Speaker 1: Let's use that word.
- 31:53Speaker 2: This is why you have like such a different audience
- 31:57Speaker 2: of like so many different areas of, cause like you
- 31:59Speaker 2: use big words too. Oh yeah. Like, yeah, you're educated.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Majestic. M-U-H-S. Majestic place.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 32:07Speaker 1: What's a big, yeah.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Neyland stadium in Tennessee is like amazing. Like, it's just
- 32:14Speaker 2: like when we would bring recruits there, it is majestic.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Like there you go. Like, and then at night and
- 32:19Speaker 2: then there's the river and the boats and then the
- 32:22Speaker 2: intensity in there. So, I was the head coach here
- 32:25Speaker 2: at Ole Miss. We went to play at Tennessee and
- 32:28Speaker 2: it was like on from warmups. Like everyone was there
- 32:33Speaker 2: over a hundred thousand people. And there was like this hatred.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Towards me.
- 32:38Speaker 2: Like I felt like the gladiator to movie, you know,
- 32:40Speaker 2: like I was there getting ready for like a thumbs down,
- 32:43Speaker 2: you know, like, And probably 12,000 people are carrying weapons
- 32:49Speaker 2: in there at that time. They had a real conversation
- 32:52Speaker 2: with me during the week about bulletproof vests. Like, there's
- 32:55Speaker 2: no way, guys. Come on, man. It's football.
- 32:57Speaker 1: And they're like, they had like three cops with me
- 33:00Speaker 1: and everything. Like, it's deer season, sir.
- 33:03Speaker 2: They didn't really do that. Maybe like a golf ball.
- 33:05Speaker 2: You know, they're going to throw at me or a
- 33:07Speaker 2: bottle or something.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:09Speaker 2: So they're walking in and I was like, this is awesome.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Like now I could feel. yeah they were like chanting
- 33:18Speaker 2: like you know like fuck lane jeff and like that
- 33:21Speaker 2: was actually like felt kind of like intense and cool
- 33:23Speaker 2: like a hundred thousand people chanting that.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Oh yeah if a bunch of people hate you at
- 33:28Speaker 1: once it's easier to go it's easier to digest.
- 33:30Speaker 2: And then they're like the student section was like hey
- 33:34Speaker 2: you know last night we were with your wife and
- 33:35Speaker 2: i was like man that's pretty funny like to come
- 33:37Speaker 2: up with stuff you know like so it was intense
- 33:40Speaker 2: and it was like And it just kept building. So
- 33:43Speaker 2: maybe like everybody didn't hate me at the beginning, but then,
- 33:46Speaker 2: you know, it's like a crowd, like storm, they feel it.
- 33:49Speaker 2: And then the hatred just kept building. And then it
- 33:51Speaker 2: was like really close game at then. And then we won.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:55Speaker 2: And then they got pissed and they like threw things
- 33:57Speaker 2: at me like golf ball and like anything they could
- 34:00Speaker 2: get like mustard.
- 34:01Speaker 1: School books, which we need in Tennessee.
- 34:03Speaker 2: First of all, they didn't, they didn't have school books.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Okay.
- 34:06Speaker 2: No mustard bottles. Oh, like how do you even have
- 34:09Speaker 2: a mustard bottle? You just brought that to the game. Like, Hey, Hey,
- 34:12Speaker 2: we're going to go to the game and sneak the
- 34:15Speaker 2: mustard bottle in.
- 34:15Speaker 1: Oh, you're in the damn condiment belt over there in Tennessee, brother.
- 34:20Speaker 1: Isn't mustard free? Like, are you saving money? Oh, you
- 34:23Speaker 1: should see where they keep their relish at, brother.
- 34:26Speaker 2: And I was like, they throw this golf ball that
- 34:29Speaker 2: became famous. They throw it at me, and I'm like, afterwards,
- 34:32Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, mustard. Like, okay, what am I sneaking
- 34:36Speaker 2: in to the game?
- 34:38Speaker 1: A golf ball.
- 34:38Speaker 2: Like, what do you have a golf ball for?
- 34:40Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 34:41Speaker 2: Like I'm carrying a golf ball because I don't think
- 34:44Speaker 2: they're thinking I'm going to throw it. Like I'm going
- 34:45Speaker 2: to be pissed off in the fourth quarter and throw it.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Right. They just had it on them. Yeah.
- 34:48Speaker 2: But then I look closer as a range ball. So
- 34:49Speaker 2: I feel like, you know what it was? It's like
- 34:51Speaker 2: the cheap guy that like steals the range ball. So like, okay,
- 34:55Speaker 2: this way I don't like have these to hit. Like,
- 34:57Speaker 2: you know, instead of like having to buy a golf ball,
- 34:58Speaker 2: so I'm going to steal the range ball like for
- 35:01Speaker 2: next time I go and play around. So it was
- 35:02Speaker 2: just in his pocket. That was my guess.
- 35:04Speaker 1: I think that's probably accurate. Oh, there you are. Oh,
- 35:07Speaker 1: that's pretty cool. Yeah. Um, did you keep that? Yeah.
- 35:11Speaker 1: You still have it? I did.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Hell yeah, dude.
- 35:13Speaker 1: That's cool. How scary is it? How quick do you
- 35:15Speaker 1: want to get off the field when you beat a
- 35:16Speaker 1: team in their stadium? Is there a weird energy there
- 35:19Speaker 1: for a little, like, is it kind of. That one was. Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:23Speaker 1: That one definitely was.
- 35:25Speaker 2: Most of the time it's not really, sometimes I kind
- 35:27Speaker 2: of like it, you know, like kind of walk off
- 35:29Speaker 2: a little slow, you know, just so like, you feel the,
- 35:32Speaker 2: like that wind that you just like ruined a hundred
- 35:35Speaker 2: thousand people's like especially in the SEC, like week, not
- 35:39Speaker 2: just day.
- 35:40Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Their traffic home. Yeah, that's a lot. And
- 35:44Speaker 1: especially a woman who was going to give birth that
- 35:46Speaker 1: week because her husband would be in a good mood,
- 35:47Speaker 1: and now she's got to hold it another week. That's
- 35:51Speaker 1: the toughest part.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Okay, we lost this week.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Yeah, we ain't having a baby under these circumstances. You
- 35:56Speaker 1: keep it in there. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Hold the line, honey. We got Bama next week. We
- 36:00Speaker 2: win that, you can have it Saturday night.
- 36:02Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. We'll get that thing out. We'll do
- 36:05Speaker 1: the tush push. That'll help. Um, what's one of the
- 36:08Speaker 1: most aggravating traditions that you think, and what's one of
- 36:10Speaker 1: the best traditions you think in college football, if you're
- 36:14Speaker 1: even up on them, I know there's a ton of
- 36:15Speaker 1: them out there. Well, this is like a big tradition,
- 36:18Speaker 1: like as far as everywhere, not specific places.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Like I love the band thing, you know, before, like,
- 36:23Speaker 2: it's just really cool when they have the band out
- 36:26Speaker 2: there and they spell things. Speaking of the Tennessee, the
- 36:28Speaker 2: opening of the T and then run out, like that
- 36:31Speaker 2: was really cool to like, see that you're like right there.
- 36:34Speaker 2: And then like the band just, opens up the tee
- 36:36Speaker 2: and you run out like that's that's a really cool tradition.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Um and is there one that's kind of aggravating you
- 36:43Speaker 1: see at a place somewhere it could be sec or anywhere.
- 36:46Speaker 2: Um the fan storming thing is a little bit tough
- 36:51Speaker 2: you know like they don't do it in the nfl
- 36:54Speaker 2: they found a way like i get it's pretty cool
- 36:58Speaker 2: um but then it can be aggravating because like they're
- 37:01Speaker 2: storming and like and you're worried about them hitting you,
- 37:05Speaker 2: what's going on, what are they going to do? It's
- 37:08Speaker 2: very invasive at that point. But I think if they
- 37:13Speaker 2: could just let everybody out and then let the fans
- 37:16Speaker 2: on so they still get to tear the goalposts down,
- 37:18Speaker 2: because that's the school and stuff.
- 37:19Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, I was at the Alabama-Vanderbilt game, and that
- 37:23Speaker 1: was pretty sick. And some guy on the sideline squeezed
- 37:25Speaker 1: me so hard, bruised one of my ribs really bad
- 37:28Speaker 1: or dislocated it, right? So I was like... doing like
- 37:32Speaker 1: that or whatever. And then every other player kept hugging me.
- 37:36Speaker 1: So it was just one after another, just the biggest
- 37:40Speaker 1: guys you ever even seen just hugging you.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Yeah, they're all excited.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Yeah, and it was just, oh, dude. That was a
- 37:46Speaker 1: really tough day. That was a tough year, actually. That
- 37:49Speaker 1: took about eight weeks to get better from. Yeah, but
- 37:51Speaker 1: you were at a historic moment. It was so cool.
- 37:54Speaker 1: That will probably never happen ever again.
- 37:55Speaker 2: I don't want to see. It was a once-in-a-lifetime.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Well, Diego Pavia got that sixth year, that eighth year,
- 38:00Speaker 1: I think he got. Yeah, you never know. Were you
- 38:03Speaker 1: surprised when he got that? Did it affect any of
- 38:05Speaker 1: the way that, were your players able to apply for
- 38:07Speaker 1: anything like that? We tried.
- 38:09Speaker 2: We didn't win it. Jack Starr actually did. Tried to
- 38:12Speaker 2: get another year or at least see if the option
- 38:14Speaker 2: was there. And, you know, they denied it. Dang.
- 38:19Speaker 1: And there we are. We iced that dude up. Clark Lee.
- 38:23Speaker 1: Good dude. I like Clark. Yeah.
- 38:24Speaker 2: He is. Old school, good guy.
- 38:27Speaker 1: They got a fun group over there. And that's kind
- 38:28Speaker 1: of underdog energy over there, too, you know? Big time.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Is there an SEC team that you also cheer for
- 38:33Speaker 1: on the low, kind of? Them. I do. Yeah, Vanderbilt.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Because I think they have, like, so much stacked against them,
- 38:39Speaker 2: you know? Like, they got higher academic. qualifications to get
- 38:43Speaker 2: guys in so they can't just get all the players
- 38:45Speaker 2: everybody else can you know like um harder you know
- 38:48Speaker 2: because the stadium's usually half full and stuff so um
- 38:51Speaker 2: i i root for them especially clark because that's a
- 38:54Speaker 2: hard job yeah and so that's that's pretty cool for
- 38:57Speaker 2: them to win like they did this year Yeah, it's
- 38:59Speaker 2: exciting over there. Yeah, they carry the goalposts. And then
- 39:02Speaker 2: they try to valet park the goalposts. I heard they
- 39:04Speaker 2: got tired of it or whatever.
- 39:05Speaker 1: I didn't know that. And they try to valet them
- 39:07Speaker 1: at a restaurant. I'm like, you can't. Who are you
- 39:08Speaker 1: going to give it to those three guys up front
- 39:10Speaker 1: or whatever? Like, that's crazy.
- 39:11Speaker 2: Yeah, but that might be the only, like, SEC town
- 39:13Speaker 2: that has valet.
- 39:14Speaker 1: That's a good. Like, when you say that, that doesn't feel.
- 39:17Speaker 1: There ain't no valet in most of these towns. Valet.
- 39:19Speaker 1: That's a great point. Spell valet. Yeah, they tried to
- 39:23Speaker 1: valet them at a, I think at a. Adam McCormick
- 39:27Speaker 1: and Schmicks or something over there. So definitely kind of interesting. Um,
- 39:32Speaker 1: I want to talk about, uh, coach Saban. You worked
- 39:34Speaker 1: with coach Saban for a while. I mean, you guys
- 39:36Speaker 1: have had like kind of a storied history over the years,
- 39:39Speaker 1: I think. Um, have you, do you guys still communicate?
- 39:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:42Speaker 1: Yeah, we do.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Um, he's not a big like text guy. Um, but
- 39:47Speaker 2: we talk every once.
- 39:47Speaker 1: In a while. Um, Is he, what is he? He's
- 39:51Speaker 1: not texting. He's like to write. Is he more written
- 39:53Speaker 1: kind of, or?
- 39:53Speaker 2: No, you got to call him.
- 39:55Speaker 1: Okay.
- 39:55Speaker 2: He did just learn how in the last like two years,
- 39:59Speaker 2: two texts, he had never texted before.
- 40:01Speaker 1: Wow. Ever.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Like when I was assisting coach Sarah, he's just like,
- 40:05Speaker 2: I'm not texting. Like he just refused. It was like
- 40:07Speaker 2: that old school. Like he's got those old school things
- 40:09Speaker 2: that aren't changing. And, and then I like got a
- 40:13Speaker 2: text like two years ago. from that said good luck
- 40:16Speaker 2: or something like that. And I was like, to the group,
- 40:19Speaker 2: I was like, dude, I got a saving text. Like,
- 40:21Speaker 2: this is amazing. This is like Vanderbilt beating Alabama. Like
- 40:24Speaker 2: this isn't supposed to happen.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Never thought I'd see this day.
- 40:27Speaker 2: And, um, and then Kirby's like, yeah, I got one
- 40:31Speaker 2: earlier this year too. Like he's like learned how to
- 40:33Speaker 2: text just like you get one or two words, but, um,
- 40:37Speaker 2: but that relationship's like almost in a way, kind of
- 40:41Speaker 2: like how you can struggle sometimes, like maybe when you're
- 40:43Speaker 2: in it with like a parent, And then you get out,
- 40:45Speaker 2: like you get older and you get away, get out
- 40:48Speaker 2: of the house.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:49Speaker 2: And then you're like, dang, man, he was on to something.
- 40:52Speaker 2: He was right on those things. So I look back
- 40:54Speaker 2: and I was there for three years and there was
- 40:57Speaker 2: friction initially. And I look back, there's all my, I'm
- 41:00Speaker 2: the assistant.
- 41:01Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Yeah. He's the head coach.
- 41:03Speaker 2: You know, whatever he says goes.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. You're supposed to keep it classy over there. Yes.
- 41:08Speaker 1: And that's not.
- 41:10Speaker 2: His way is very like, this is the way, like
- 41:13Speaker 2: there's not open discussions about it and stuff. And I was,
- 41:16Speaker 2: I'd worked for Pete Carroll as assistant. So that's all
- 41:18Speaker 2: I knew. And it's just totally different. So like you
- 41:23Speaker 2: come in and you have an open conversation and you're
- 41:25Speaker 2: questioning the process. No, I just was asking like, have
- 41:28Speaker 2: we looked at this? You know, like, so I didn't
- 41:30Speaker 2: really know how it worked right away. And so it
- 41:33Speaker 2: took a little bit of time. Like he didn't want
- 41:34Speaker 2: a lot of suggestions. No, no, no, no. It's not
- 41:37Speaker 2: like a suggestion box. Like, Hey, let me pull this. Oh, here,
- 41:39Speaker 2: here's a good idea.
- 41:40Speaker 1: You know?
- 41:40Speaker 2: Like, so it was, um, it was just something I
- 41:44Speaker 2: wasn't used to that way. And so it took a
- 41:46Speaker 2: little bit of time, but now that I look back,
- 41:49Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, he was so strict on everything. Kind
- 41:52Speaker 2: of like in parent way, like with his team, with
- 41:54Speaker 2: the players, the coaches, like nothing, nothing changed. Even when
- 41:58Speaker 2: we won national championship and there's seven 30 staff meeting
- 42:01Speaker 2: the next morning, I'm like, what are we meeting on
- 42:03Speaker 2: at seven 30 the next morning? He's like, we're behind.
- 42:05Speaker 2: You know, because we won the championship, everybody else was
- 42:07Speaker 2: recruiting and we're behind. And I was like, well, what
- 42:09Speaker 2: are we doing? But now I look back and be like,
- 42:12Speaker 2: that's why he is what he is. That's why he
- 42:14Speaker 2: was so great. Cause it was like the standard never
- 42:17Speaker 2: changed no matter what. And then that took me some
- 42:20Speaker 2: time to understand too. Like when you, when we were
- 42:23Speaker 2: winning and playing really well and coaching really well, he
- 42:27Speaker 2: was harder on you. Cause he didn't want you to
- 42:29Speaker 2: have relief syndrome. You know, like, oh man, we we've
- 42:32Speaker 2: made it. And I didn't really understand that. I saw
- 42:36Speaker 2: he was on the pivot like a month ago, and
- 42:39Speaker 2: I listened to it with my son Knox, and he
- 42:41Speaker 2: talked about it in there. He'd never explained it to us,
- 42:45Speaker 2: but it was interesting hearing. He said most people are
- 42:48Speaker 2: born with a relief syndrome.
- 42:49Speaker 1: He wasn't.
- 42:50Speaker 2: He just always had this way of thinking like, hey,
- 42:53Speaker 2: you never relax, but most people are. So he went
- 42:57Speaker 2: above and beyond to make sure people didn't have that.
- 42:59Speaker 2: We'd win a game, and then he comes in and
- 43:02Speaker 2: just rips us. They were like, man, we played great,
- 43:05Speaker 2: coached great. That was because he was guarding against that
- 43:08Speaker 2: because he knew that that could happen.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Dang. Yeah. He wasn't letting anything be a possibility to lose.
- 43:15Speaker 2: When I left, we had won 26 straight games, so
- 43:17Speaker 2: I only hadn't had many losses. But I do remember
- 43:21Speaker 2: the three losses that we had over the three years.
- 43:25Speaker 2: He actually, after those, was calm. That's when we didn't
- 43:30Speaker 2: get ripped because he's like, they're going to get ripped anyway.
- 43:34Speaker 2: I don't need to. You know, like I need to,
- 43:38Speaker 2: when they're feeling good about themselves, bring him down. So
- 43:41Speaker 2: I didn't really understand that at first. And now I
- 43:44Speaker 2: look back going, man, there's a reason he's the greatest. Wow.
- 43:47Speaker 1: Yeah, do you regard him as the greatest? Yeah. I do.
- 43:50Speaker 2: I think because, you know, the Bear Bryants, the like
- 43:54Speaker 2: legends back then, no offense, they had like unlimited scholarships.
- 43:59Speaker 2: Coach Saban did it in an era where there were
- 44:01Speaker 2: reduced scholarship numbers. He also did an error when you're
- 44:04Speaker 2: losing coaches left and right. He lost so many assistant coaches,
- 44:08Speaker 2: and he just kept winning. And I don't think anybody
- 44:11Speaker 2: will ever be able to do that again. And he
- 44:15Speaker 2: couldn't even do that again. The way that it's going anyway,
- 44:18Speaker 2: and now this with the money part and all that stuff,
- 44:20Speaker 2: that's like evening things out that people can't stack the
- 44:23Speaker 2: teams like he did. Because now your second team and
- 44:28Speaker 2: third teams, maybe before where they had to sit there
- 44:30Speaker 2: and wait, they couldn't leave back then. Now they leave.
- 44:34Speaker 2: So you lose your backups because someone gives them more money.
- 44:37Speaker 1: But how was he able to convince players to sit there,
- 44:39Speaker 1: be just as good, and sit second or third position?
- 44:41Speaker 1: That's tough, I feel like. Yeah.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Well, that's what I'm saying. Part of his time, they
- 44:46Speaker 2: couldn't leave yet. You couldn't transfer. Now you can transfer
- 44:50Speaker 2: twice a year. So he still was able at the
- 44:52Speaker 2: end to convince some guys to stay, but he started
- 44:54Speaker 2: losing so the teams weren't as deep.
- 44:57Speaker 1: Did he have to recruit the whole time? Or at
- 44:58Speaker 1: a certain point, did the acumen of their winning just
- 45:02Speaker 1: be the recruiter for him, do you think?
- 45:04Speaker 2: That helped a lot, but he never changed. That was him. Like,
- 45:07Speaker 2: there was no relief. It never changed. Like, he recruited
- 45:11Speaker 2: every day, no matter what. And he was nonstop, and
- 45:15Speaker 2: he was relentless. People always say, okay, well, why did
- 45:17Speaker 2: he win so many championships? Why was he so good?
- 45:20Speaker 2: And I was like, well, there's the process. There's the
- 45:22Speaker 2: assistant coaches. There's the discipline, all these different areas.
- 45:25Speaker 1: Right. But really, the number one thing that mattered the most,
- 45:30Speaker 1: he out-recruited people.
- 45:32Speaker 2: He got better players. When you get better players, you
- 45:34Speaker 2: win a lot of games. It wasn't just coming there
- 45:37Speaker 2: just to come there. They came there because he recruited
- 45:39Speaker 2: really hard.
- 45:40Speaker 1: Got it. Did he, what was he like? I mean,
- 45:42Speaker 1: did you ever get to spend any time with him? Like,
- 45:44Speaker 1: was he good at cards or anything like that? Or
- 45:45Speaker 1: was he, did he do anything else besides, like, did
- 45:49Speaker 1: he ever take his whistle off, you think? Like, even
- 45:51Speaker 1: in the shower, you know?
- 45:52Speaker 2: Coach didn't do a lot of other things.
- 45:56Speaker 1: I know he golfed.
- 45:57Speaker 2: I never golfed with him, but he golfed.
- 46:00Speaker 1: Did he ever invite you? Did he ever dress up
- 46:02Speaker 1: for Halloween? Like, was there anything you ever saw Coach
- 46:04Speaker 1: Saban do that was like, felt a little bit more,
- 46:08Speaker 1: not as much like, who's that guy, Robert Downey Jr.
- 46:13Speaker 2: What's the character he plays? Iron, that was outside of
- 46:15Speaker 2: Iron Man, you know? It's interesting, you know, Nick Saban.
- 46:20Speaker 2: And people would joke Nick Satan, you know, he was
- 46:22Speaker 2: born on Halloween.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Was he really?
- 46:24Speaker 2: It was birthday every year is Halloween.
- 46:26Speaker 1: No. Yeah. So maybe his whole fricking existence was a costume.
- 46:30Speaker 2: Maybe. But he did not, there was not, he wasn't
- 46:34Speaker 2: going to wear a costume or something like that on Halloween.
- 46:37Speaker 2: So there was no like, he didn't have like Halloween
- 46:39Speaker 2: parties and stuff. On your own birthday, even put on
- 46:41Speaker 2: a little cat tail or something. Because it was, no
- 46:46Speaker 2: day was different. Every day was the same. Wow.
- 46:49Speaker 1: I will say this.
- 46:50Speaker 2: I went to Easter one time at his house and
- 46:54Speaker 2: my kids, they were still living in California with my wife.
- 46:57Speaker 2: And cause I took the Alabama job and then they
- 47:00Speaker 2: came for Easter and he invited us over and, um,
- 47:05Speaker 2: we went over there and he was different. Now he
- 47:09Speaker 2: didn't put on like a bunny costume, but like he
- 47:12Speaker 2: was helping the kids with like the Easter eggs. And
- 47:14Speaker 2: he had one grandkid at the time. Um, and he
- 47:17Speaker 2: was like carrying around and like, And it was totally
- 47:20Speaker 2: different than the office Nick Saban that we would see
- 47:22Speaker 2: all the time. You know, like, so that was pretty
- 47:25Speaker 2: cool to see that side of him. Now, he's also
- 47:27Speaker 2: so competitive that he, his grandkid was like one and
- 47:31Speaker 2: all of a sudden the grandkid found the golden egg,
- 47:33Speaker 2: you know, like while he was with coach way over there,
- 47:36Speaker 2: you know, so coach also was going to make sure
- 47:38Speaker 2: that he won.
- 47:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:39Speaker 2: But it was pretty cool to see him like that. Yeah.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Yeah. You got to be different. You can't, when Jesus
- 47:45Speaker 1: is making a comeback, you can't play defense on that day.
- 47:47Speaker 1: You know, that's when you got to just, call the
- 47:50Speaker 1: dogs off i feel like but it is definitely skeptical
- 47:53Speaker 1: that a one-year-old found a golden egg was he playing
- 47:56Speaker 1: against other kids of kids like of age children yeah.
- 47:59Speaker 2: Mine were like 8 10 and 12.
- 48:01Speaker 1: Oh god that's sad but yeah winners win you know
- 48:07Speaker 1: that's what they say do you think that um coach
- 48:10Speaker 1: saban misses coaching i.
- 48:11Speaker 2: Do um i think that and he mentioned that in
- 48:15Speaker 2: that pivot podcast but I did always think, okay, if
- 48:17Speaker 2: he was going to do this, he was going to
- 48:18Speaker 2: have to have, and I, and I used to say,
- 48:20Speaker 2: he's going to have to kind of have that college
- 48:22Speaker 2: game day spot. Cause he's going to want to still
- 48:25Speaker 2: like be involved. You know, he's just so wired to
- 48:28Speaker 2: all day long to do something for his entire life.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Now he ain't, he, he's not going to sit around
- 48:34Speaker 2: and just, you know, be a grandpa. Yeah. That's not him.
- 48:38Speaker 2: So I think because of that, that's helped a lot.
- 48:41Speaker 2: I wouldn't actually be surprised if he came back in
- 48:43Speaker 2: the NFL, even, you know, his head coach. because he's
- 48:48Speaker 2: so good at it and so in him that I'm
- 48:50Speaker 2: not sure he won't come back.
- 48:53Speaker 1: I want to talk about the NIL, and then I
- 48:55Speaker 1: want to talk about your team and Ole Miss here. God,
- 49:00Speaker 1: I sound like a sports guy or something. What am
- 49:02Speaker 1: I even doing today? Yeah, you're getting really like– I know.
- 49:04Speaker 2: I feel like going into this, we were going to
- 49:07Speaker 2: go a lot of different directions, and now you've come
- 49:09Speaker 2: back to like– I think people have probably turned off
- 49:11Speaker 2: by now.
- 49:12Speaker 1: I know.
- 49:14Speaker 2: Tell us about your– up at safety this year.
- 49:17Speaker 1: Yeah. How do you guys feel about third down? package?
- 49:20Speaker 2: Nobody wants to hear that.
- 49:23Speaker 1: I don't know. My first down package is pretty small,
- 49:25Speaker 1: I'll tell you that. That's an old wiener joke. Here
- 49:29Speaker 1: we go. Now we're more. There we go. Yes, they're
- 49:32Speaker 1: turning back on. I want to tell you about the NIL.
- 49:34Speaker 1: Do you have to spend more time recruiting players or
- 49:37Speaker 1: boosters these days with NIL? No. Yeah.
- 49:41Speaker 2: A lot of booster part because they got to get
- 49:44Speaker 2: the resources to pay. Now that's going to get a
- 49:46Speaker 2: little bit moved now with revenue sharing and coming from
- 49:49Speaker 2: the school. But these last few years has been, okay, well,
- 49:52Speaker 2: the boosters have to create these collectives and have to
- 49:56Speaker 2: source the money to pay the players. So if you
- 49:58Speaker 2: don't have the money, you don't have the payroll, it's
- 49:59Speaker 2: hard to get players. And if you see, it's not
- 50:02Speaker 2: hard to look at who just won in basketball, the
- 50:06Speaker 2: programs that made the final four, look at what The
- 50:08Speaker 2: Final Four college football teams, they're major programs that have
- 50:12Speaker 2: a lot of financial resources. So, yeah, you've got to
- 50:17Speaker 2: do a lot of that, and then you've got to
- 50:19Speaker 2: convince the players. Now, where it's different is the.
- 50:22Speaker 1: Old school, unfortunately, kind of, the old school recruiting of
- 50:26Speaker 1: the relationships and having a relationship three years since the
- 50:29Speaker 1: kid was a sophomore in high school and stuff, it's
- 50:32Speaker 1: not as important anymore because now I'm like, okay, well,
- 50:35Speaker 1: what are you paying me?
- 50:37Speaker 2: You know, the school's this, the school's this, the school's this.
- 50:39Speaker 2: And most of them usually go to the higher, higher number.
- 50:43Speaker 1: And is that just a real question out of the
- 50:44Speaker 1: gate is what is the offer? Yeah. Wow. And do
- 50:47Speaker 1: most of them have agents or they have to do
- 50:49Speaker 1: that directly by themselves? Yeah.
- 50:50Speaker 2: They, now it's now just transitioned to where most of
- 50:52Speaker 2: them have agents now.
- 50:53Speaker 1: That's trash.
- 50:54Speaker 2: It's really, you know, we're in my office right here.
- 50:58Speaker 2: So I sit here all the time and the recruits
- 50:59Speaker 2: sit over there where your guys are and the parents
- 51:02Speaker 2: and I said this to our staff the other day,
- 51:04Speaker 2: like I've sat in so many of these meetings, like whatever,
- 51:07Speaker 2: say the last hundred.
- 51:09Speaker 1: And you know, I never hear anymore. What's your graduation rate?
- 51:13Speaker 1: I never hear anymore. Like what's the academic plan. And
- 51:17Speaker 1: it's just kind of sad. These are the parents. It
- 51:19Speaker 1: just is what it is.
- 51:21Speaker 2: And then I go, okay, well, when's our NIL meeting?
- 51:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 51:24Speaker 2: What's the number? What's the second year number? Like, I'm
- 51:27Speaker 2: not mad about it, but it's just kind of sad.
- 51:30Speaker 2: You just recognize it.
- 51:31Speaker 1: And I'm also.
- 51:32Speaker 2: Recognizing it to say, I don't believe long-term that's good
- 51:36Speaker 2: for the kids. So this, this has been great for
- 51:38Speaker 2: players to make some money, but it's so much money
- 51:40Speaker 2: and it's so much focus on the money that then
- 51:44Speaker 2: it's like, okay, well then what's next? If I already
- 51:45Speaker 2: getting the money when I'm 18, then, then what?
- 51:48Speaker 1: Right.
- 51:49Speaker 2: You've seen this all the time. People get too much
- 51:52Speaker 2: too early. And then what? They crash.
- 51:55Speaker 1: So crash out. Yes.
- 51:56Speaker 2: And I feel like we're creating a lot of that
- 51:58Speaker 2: in this. And now a kid sitting there listening to
- 52:01Speaker 2: his parents at, you know, they want to know the money. Like,
- 52:03Speaker 2: So what's a kid supposed to want to know?
- 52:05Speaker 1: Yeah, it's crazy. I agree. Yeah, it's bonkers, dude. Yeah,
- 52:11Speaker 1: if I'd have had some money, I'd have fucking left
- 52:13Speaker 1: school the second you gave me that chat. I'd have
- 52:15Speaker 1: driven across country and got me some damn dope, boy.
- 52:18Speaker 2: But I'm sure at that time you thought, man, if
- 52:20Speaker 2: I just had a million dollars, man, I'd have no problems.
- 52:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:24Speaker 2: Yeah, then life would be great. I heard all the time,
- 52:26Speaker 2: these players, I just get money, man. Players, I hear
- 52:30Speaker 2: from adults. If I get money, man, on my problems,
- 52:32Speaker 2: then I'll be good. Okay. We'll see. We'll see. And
- 52:36Speaker 2: I go in the homes and recruiting over all these years.
- 52:40Speaker 2: I see the most problems in the families with the
- 52:42Speaker 2: most money, most money, most success. And then I don't
- 52:46Speaker 2: feel any warmth in that room. I don't feel the
- 52:48Speaker 2: connection with the kids. Like, and then I'll go to
- 52:50Speaker 2: a house here in Mississippi or Louisiana, you know, and
- 52:54Speaker 2: there'll be 10 people living in this two bedroom house.
- 52:57Speaker 2: And you just feel like the warmth and like the
- 53:00Speaker 2: closeness and everything. And they ain't got hardly anything.
- 53:03Speaker 1: Financially but then they have this love and this family
- 53:07Speaker 1: and i've just done this for a long time and
- 53:10Speaker 1: i see it usually the other way around the bigger
- 53:12Speaker 1: the houses the more cars the more money.
- 53:18Speaker 2: The more problems.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Yeah yeah that's what they said jay-z said it didn't
- 53:23Speaker 1: he biggie said it somebody yeah whoever said he got
- 53:28Speaker 1: murdered i remember that um You know, April is financial
- 53:34Speaker 1: literacy month, and that makes me think, well, how did
- 53:37Speaker 1: I first learn about money? Well, I guess, well, I
- 53:43Speaker 1: got a little job that a lady paid me to
- 53:46Speaker 1: catch these cats she had, and she gave me a
- 53:47Speaker 1: little bit of money, and I would take that money
- 53:50Speaker 1: and I would store it. I had one of those
- 53:52Speaker 1: Crown Royal bags, one of the purple bags that came in,
- 53:56Speaker 1: and I'd put all my money in there and save it.

- 56:37Speaker 1: biggest things that keeps players that are good players from succeeding?
- 56:41Speaker 1: Do you find?
- 56:42Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 56:43Speaker 1: Hmm. Their minds. Yeah.
- 56:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 56:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:46Speaker 2: A lot of them run fast, jump, throw, and it's
- 56:50Speaker 2: their minds and then getting in their own way. You know,
- 56:53Speaker 2: and then here comes this, now you got money to,
- 56:55Speaker 2: here comes this ego coming in because I'm a five-star.
- 56:59Speaker 2: got all these scholarship offers like the entitlement of that
- 57:02Speaker 2: and the ego comes in and out now they got
- 57:04Speaker 2: the money too so it's like they had this drive
- 57:07Speaker 2: to get to the nfl because they want to play
- 57:09Speaker 2: in the nfl they want to get the money well
- 57:10Speaker 2: i'm getting the money already so now that's now i've
- 57:13Speaker 2: lost some drive there right and they just get in
- 57:16Speaker 2: their own ways you know and they get so much
- 57:20Speaker 2: attention so early and so much and then it's like
- 57:24Speaker 2: they just think it's gonna last forever yeah and they
- 57:27Speaker 2: just like just screw it up so they get in
- 57:30Speaker 2: their own ways and it's usually that one word ego um.
- 57:36Speaker 1: What's the craziest thing a player's ever asked you for
- 57:38Speaker 1: just like point blank have they ever been like i
- 57:40Speaker 1: need a uh give me a jaguar coach or something
- 57:43Speaker 1: like that like the animal or the car.
- 57:46Speaker 2: Not the animal um i wouldn't say create like i
- 57:49Speaker 2: don't have a good story like a crazy thing you
- 57:51Speaker 2: know like but it just, what continues to blow my
- 57:57Speaker 2: mind in nowadays is they want more when they haven't
- 58:02Speaker 2: done anything new. Meaning like, okay, here's what I got.
- 58:04Speaker 2: I got this to come, you know, to transfer, to
- 58:06Speaker 2: come out of high school. And then they come in like, okay, well,
- 58:09Speaker 2: I need more. And they're like, well, you didn't do anything.
- 58:12Speaker 2: Like you didn't have a good year. Well, why, why
- 58:16Speaker 2: would you get more? Like, it's just that mindset of like,
- 58:19Speaker 2: I just deserve more. Like I deserve more and more
- 58:23Speaker 2: because there's no, There's no appreciation in there for where
- 58:26Speaker 2: they're at or like, man, I got to play better
- 58:28Speaker 2: to get more. Just I'm supposed to get more. And
- 58:30Speaker 2: that happens all the time. There's two transfer portal windows.
- 58:34Speaker 2: So like if you could negotiate your contract twice a year,
- 58:37Speaker 2: every year, but then for six months, you haven't done
- 58:40Speaker 2: a show.
- 58:40Speaker 1: You haven't done anything.
- 58:41Speaker 2: But after that six month period, you want a new
- 58:44Speaker 2: contract and a new deal bigger than what you had,
- 58:46Speaker 2: but you hadn't done anything. Yeah. Or maybe you screwed
- 58:48Speaker 2: the shows up.
- 58:49Speaker 1: Right. Through interceptions, but you still want more. So it's just,
- 58:53Speaker 1: And it's not even their fault.
- 58:54Speaker 2: There's the parents. Now you got agents. Like, do you
- 58:57Speaker 2: still feel like a coach? Do you feel like a
- 58:59Speaker 2: banker more? It's not really like a banker, but you,
- 59:04Speaker 2: you spend so much time not coaching. And I think
- 59:07Speaker 2: that's part of the Nick Saban and, you know, getting out.
- 59:10Speaker 2: It's just like, it just changed, you know, because these
- 59:13Speaker 2: conversations and these things, and you see the like greed
- 59:16Speaker 2: for it, you know, like, but it's, it's a, it's
- 59:21Speaker 2: unique because from someone that's been fortunate to make money,
- 59:25Speaker 2: have success, get to the highest levels, like, it's like,
- 59:29Speaker 2: I keep trying to tell them like, that's not going
- 59:31Speaker 2: to be the answer. Like that new contract, getting that
- 59:35Speaker 2: much more money isn't going to change anything. You're not
- 59:38Speaker 2: going to, you know, be happier because of, but it's like,
- 59:42Speaker 2: they don't.
- 59:43Speaker 1: You can't hear it. Yes. Kids can't hear it.
- 59:46Speaker 2: I can sit in these two chairs right here to some, some,
- 59:50Speaker 2: most of them, some will, but most of them. And
- 59:53Speaker 2: they just look at me like, there's no one. I'm like,
- 59:55Speaker 2: Listen to me.
- 59:56Speaker 1: Until you fix these internal problems, until you fix how
- 59:59Speaker 1: you think, that everybody's against you or whatever it is,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: these issues that they each have, and I'll try to
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: work through them. That money, that new contract, that next car,
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: that next girl, that's not going to fix that. If
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: I get picked in the first round, I get that contract,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: everything is fixed. Coach, I don't care what you say.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: Trust me. Yeah, they say it's all a wrap. Yeah,
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: everybody thinks Dell had it figured out.
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: I get more bands, it's good.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah, boy, give me a grand right now.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: That's all I need.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: I run a 50 right now. I run a 6150.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: How fast is that? 6150.
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: We don't really grade in 50. You mean 40?
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: I don't know. That's good.
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: You confuse people. It might be good, it might be bad.
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: I don't know what I mean. I don't know if
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: you're slow or fast. 6150. So what is some of your...
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: push for players to come here to Ole Miss easy.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: He's like, what is it, you know, what do you
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: sell them on about being here? Yeah, this is a
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: really cool place to go to school. And so I
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: got to see that as a parent, my daughter, Landry's
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: a sophomore here. So, oh yeah. I seen her on
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: Tik TOK before I seen y'all on there doing makeup
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: or whatever. Yeah. Yeah. Like, just like I said, the
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: social media thing, I kind of live like a young
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: person in a lot of ways, like just enjoy. You know?
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: I just try to have joy. And I'm like, again,
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: back to a lot.
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: Of people, you're supposed to be old, you're supposed to
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: be an adult. You can't do a makeup TikTok with
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: your daughter. I don't want to be gone someday. I'm
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: going to be dead or I'm going to be at
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: the end of it.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: You know?
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: Those last couple years, you think I'm going to be like, man,
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: I wish I would have spent... I think I'm going
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: to be like, man, I wish I would have done
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: that with my daughter because some fans think that's like,
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: I'm soft.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: Yeah, dude. I think a lot of, also a lot
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: of I bet four of the first-round picks this year
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: will be wearing blush.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: Like, now they're wearing, like, nail polish and stuff.
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: Oh, have them wearing nail polish, eyeliner, booty liner some
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: guy had on the other day. They caught him. Some guy,
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: I think, that played for Northwestern or Nickel State or something.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: And I'm like, what is that? Who's putting rouge on
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: their butt cheeks, you know? So I think you're way
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: safe here, Coach. But that's just kind of like how
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: I– And I don't know, like, it seems like you
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: have that too, where it's kind of like, man, we're
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: supposed to be growing up and there's certain aspects we are,
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: but then these other areas, it's like, what's wrong with
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: having youthful fun?
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: And, you know, like we go out and play pickleball
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: and somebody's like, I see some old people look at
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: me like, man, he's playing out there with his kids.
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: And like, he's like dancing to the music, you know,
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: to like Taylor Swift playing or something, you know, like,
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: I'm like, why? Just because I'm like getting older. I'm
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: not supposed to like, Have fun.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: You know, or like when you come to yoga in
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: the morning and like, we're crushing you in yoga and
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: I'm kind of like dancing back, like talking shit, celebrating
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: over you. Like, And if that happens in the morning,
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: you might crush it in the morning.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean, look, I don't want to,
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: I don't want to have to do yoga or have
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: to wear cleats is the only thing that I'm thinking.
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: There's no cleats. Okay. No cleats. No socks even. But no,
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: I think you're right, man. Yeah. I think, well, it
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: also goes back to what you said. It's like, you know,
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: you don't like to follow this old playbook about things.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: You'd like to have this new playbook about things. What's
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: kind of like part of that, that you offer your
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: players or people that want to come down here. Do
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: you sell them like, Hey, this is a team that's like,
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: this is a program that's obviously it's gone. You know,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: the trajectory has gone up, you know, especially in the past.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: five years for sure in the past decade. Yeah, what
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: do you kind of push them on? How do you
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: get players to come here to Ole Miss? Because it's
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: always been a little bit more of the underdog in
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: the SEC. Yeah.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: I think the kids really like, we create an atmosphere
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: that you want to be at, not have to. Same
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: with our employees. You know, like I feel like in
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: the morning, if you ask them when they're getting up
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: and they're driving their cars over, whether it's players or staff,
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: like they want to be here.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: Yeah, the GM had a damn zen in, I think. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: he does.
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: He's working on it.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: He's trying to quit some other things.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: Yeah. We've all been through things, Coach. Been there, done that. Yeah.
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: But that atmosphere of comfortable and, like, the players, like,
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: I've been around both. And I've been around them as
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: an employee where you're miserable driving in, like, oh, another day.
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: And it's just like, to me, you're not very productive
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: that way. Like, I want our players to come here and, like,
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: they play their own playlists, like in practice and stuff,
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: you know, like it's a player's team with discipline, but
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: the same thing around the office, like people, when you
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: have hours, like you don't even have like, you leave
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: when you're done with your work, you know, like, okay,
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: you leave at this time. Um, cause then people just
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: sit there and guard their desk, you know, tell the
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: time goes. So I just try to create an atmosphere
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: that people really want to be at and they, they
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: have a lot of fun doing it. And it's really,
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: to me, it's awesome. If you can win and have fun,
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: Because some programs like they win, but they're still miserable.
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: And I've seen that. So we try to create this atmosphere.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: And I think people love it.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: Is it tough to be like a coach and a dad?
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: Because you have three children, right? And is it tough
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: to be like a coach and a dad and a
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: coach and a husband? Like what's that? What is the
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: cross of like those jobs like for a coach? Because
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: it takes a lot of time.
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: Yeah. I think like a lot of questions, I answer
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: them differently now than I did five, 10, 15 years ago. Um,
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: I think, you know, as I look back and I
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: use my failures and experiences now, it's awesome because I
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: get to use to help others.
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: And I help our players when they're going through it.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: So I liked that. I had a lot of stuff
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: happen to me or self-inflicted stuff.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: Um, that like I struggled for a long time. But
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: then as I like now see, like I get to help, like,
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: cause the coach knows my story or players and they
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: come in and I can help them with things. Like
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: when you say, okay, how did like the balance of
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: a husband, father and head coach? Well, I failed at
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: that because I'm as a head coach, like I was
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: a head coach, Tennessee USC. And I was like, that
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: was my higher power. And I'm the head coach USC.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: That's who I am. Not like, Oh, I'm a husband.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: Not I'm a father. Like, That became my higher power.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: That was the most important thing to me. And I
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: could feel it because I'd be like, ooh, we'd win.
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: So then like the LA Times Sunday morning, man, Coach
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: Lane Kiffin, you know, like, and like, well, what do
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: you want? And I remember him asking me like, what
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: do you want someday? And I'm like, a statue like
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: Nick Saban. Because then I made it. Like they built
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: a statue of me because I won so many games
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: and championships.
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: That's what I want.
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: But I was totally missing it. Because if you ask
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: me that now, what do you want? You know what
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: I want? I want to be a really good dad.
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: I want to be a really good boss, a really
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: good friend, a really good neighbor. The other stuff happens
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: with the wins. That's fine.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: But I was so focused on that that it controlled everything.
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: I just slept at the office all week long because
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: we had to win. That's all that matters.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: Like John Daly used to sleep at a Hooters.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a little different.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true. He didn't work there. It's not like
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: he was, you know, working on chipping at Hooters. Yeah,
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: that's true. It's a short game. Yeah, that's a good point.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: So I don't know why I said that, but yeah,
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: people sleep at the office. Yeah. I think John Daly
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: still goes to Hooters for like the John Daly two-hour
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: like signing special.
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: I love JD, by the way.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: He's awesome. He's awesome. We tell, no, we talk about
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: him every single week. There he is right there. Yes. Yeah. Oh,
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: he's got a, he's got that two pack. Right. Well,
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: he's off a couple of honey packs right there. Look
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: at him. Yeah. That's where I won't comment. Head coach.
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: Okay. Okay.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: So anyway, so that's where this failure came in because
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: it was like, okay, if you're going to put all,
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: if this is the most important thing to you, then
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: I like look back and shoot. No wonder, like I
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: ended up getting divorced. No wonder that, you know, I
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: ended up having strained relationship with my kids. And then
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: I kind of figured this out later on and started going, okay, wait, wait,
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: wait a second. This is just part of who I am,
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: you know, being a coach. And then I started to
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: work on the other areas of my life. Got sober
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: from a lot of things really. Just not just physical sober,
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: like stop drinking, but like emotionally sober, you know, like,
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: and that's still a constant battle, like working on that, like,
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: and things not making me go way up, way down,
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: like every day. But, and people say, okay, well, what
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: do you do? You don't drink. Like, what do you
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: do like Thursday? And I was like, what's replaced that
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: is like amazing. Like going to dinner with Landry or
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: watch a movie with her friends. Like, you know, like
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: you just, I just had this shift and it really
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: helped me And actually, I'm a better coach out of it,
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: which you wouldn't think would be, because you think, okay, well,
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: if you put everything into it. But then you lose balance,
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: and you're just kind of off, and everything is so
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: defined on a win or loss that it's everything. I
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: remember losing a really, really important game. And I remember
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: at the time saying, why she's like, and I'm like,
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: I don't want to wake up.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: We actually lost USC. We lost to Texas. We were
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: on our third straight national championship and lost in the
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: Rose Bowl national championship. Vince Young can tackle him. And
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't want to wake up tomorrow. She said,
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: what is wrong with you? We had one kid at
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: the time, Landry. And she's like, you have a kid,
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: like you have a whole life. Like, we lost the game,
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: third straight national championship. How long is it going to
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: take to ever get there again? Yeah.
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: But I was just so out of whack on that
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: because that's, I mentioned earlier that the ego had gotten
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: so big when I became a head coach and all
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: the money and success and attention that like, it just built.
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: And like, you got to keep feeding it. And so
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: it's really been cool to get out of that spot.
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: Yeah. And what do you attribute to helping you get
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: out of it probably?
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: Lifestyle change. Um, you know, I came to Mississippi and
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: decided like, okay, I started eating more food, not working out. Like, um,
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: and I just was like, man, I'm not the best
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: version of myself. I didn't have this like rock bottom moment,
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: you know, that people have sometimes I just was like, man,
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: I don't really like this lower version of myself. I
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: want to be the highest version of myself. So I
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: changed my diet. I stopped the alcohol. I started working out. Um,
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: And really what I started to do is to pour
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: into other people instead of just pouring into myself.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: Dang, coach, you're making me feel bad about my life, bro.
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: You're younger than me. You used to get there. It's
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: a daily battle.
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: It is, man.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: And especially that emotional sobriety. That's my biggest issue, dude.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: I mean, I have a certain emotion and I get
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: literally drunk off of it or high off of it.
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: Or the other way, I get depressed. It's like those
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: are like my drugs a lot of times. Any feeling
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: that I have.
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: I'm still there. Like, that's a daily battle.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: God, boy.
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: And I really got on this after the physical sobriety
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: after a couple years of, okay, well, okay, I got
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: really healthy, working out all the time, I don't drink.
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: But it was like, okay, but I still was letting people,
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: situations like, man, well, that went my way, so everything's good.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: You know, like, oh, that didn't go that way. We
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: lose that recruiter. I have an argument with this person, and, like,
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: everything's terrible.
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: And I was like, man.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: And I had somebody tell me, like, just remember, the
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: tide goes in and out every day. Like it's going to.
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: And like, do you just get freaked out by that?
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: Or are you just like, hey, the tide came in,
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: tide went out. And so I really try to do
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: that because like, I'll do the yoga. Everything's good, man.
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: And then I'll come in here and then this player
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: has this issue, you know, or a kid has this issue,
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: you know, and then it's like, or this doesn't go
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: this way. Especially like, if you're like me, which I
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: feel like you are from your last answer, when somebody
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: doesn't do what you want them to do, like, wait,
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: Everything would be good, man. If he just wouldn't say that.
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: Sorry, and I'll bleep this. If she does this, if
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: he does that, and they do that, I'll be good. Yeah. Well, wait,
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: they don't? And it never is going to happen. It's
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: just total unrealistic expectations of what I have a lot
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: of times. Yeah. And that's one of my biggest things
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: is unrealistic expectations.
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: Like expecting the tide not to come in.
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: Yes. Or expecting everybody to do things exactly. I want
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: to expect that people know how I want things done
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: after I haven't shared how I want them done. That's
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: my biggest thing. Like expecting somebody to know what I
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: want them to do, but I've never even told them
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: exactly what I want.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: And that's a crazy person would think that way. So yeah.
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: Or I did this. I'm not doing good.
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: And then they don't deal. And then they.
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: Don't act how I want them to act after what
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: I did. Yeah. Haven't I shared with you? Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: But there is a major problem that when you become,
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: and you're in charge of a company, you're a head coach,
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: and all the people are working for you. So your
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: whole day, they really are.
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: Doing what you want. And then now in your personal
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: life outside of it, maybe somebody doesn't do what you
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: want and then you lose your mind. That's where I
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: was off with the emotional part. Yeah.
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: You know, and had to like work on that part.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: Yeah. I can't imagine I'm going to be a coach.
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: It would be hard. I can't even coach myself. Um, oh,
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: so you've really taken the Oxford coach. I noticed that
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: your son is moving here, right? Is that true? Yeah.
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: So my daughter goes to school here. Okay. And she's
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: a sophomore. She's a sophomore.
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: My other daughter's going to college at USC. And then
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: my son is moving here. He's actually on a spring
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: break here right now. And he's moving here next month.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: And he's going to go to Oxford high. He is. Nice.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: And he plays football too, or no? He does. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: He's, um, he's quarterback. He's got a chance to be good. Um,
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: so that'll be exciting to be able to watch all
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: his games here. And he's always up here working out
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: with his buddies.
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: So, Oh, that's going to be great to just to
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: be around that much, that many other players and stuff.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: It's awesome.
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: I was, my, my dad was a coach. I grew
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: up as a coach's kid that to be around those
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: locker rooms and to be around those players and to
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: learn from them. It's, it's, it's so awesome. And so motivating.
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Do you have a good relationship with your dad?
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: I know your dad was Monty Kepin. Yep. And did
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: you have, did you guys have a good relationship? Amazing.
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: So he, he passed in July and, um, Was he sick?
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: Was he pretty sick at the end of his life?
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: He had dementia, and so he slowed down a lot.
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: But here's what's really cool, you know, just saying like
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. Like
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: we probably have the pain of regret from things we
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: weren't disciplined at in life. You know, if you look back, man,
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: if I would have done that or like I would
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: have got, you know, made different decisions, so now we
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: have the pain of the regret of that. Yeah. Well,
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: I think a lot of times people with parents sometimes like,
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: When they pass, you know, they have the pain of regret.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: Man, I wish I'd have been around them more. I
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: didn't go to see them. Well, my dad worked for
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: me all the way up until then at 84. So
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: all these last three stops, he was here in the
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: building helping us coach. Oh, that's cool.
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: So every day I would see him 15 times a day. Oh, yeah.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: And he was such a coach that, like, even his
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: doctors would say that was keeping him alive because he
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: could come into the office every day. He was 84
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: years old with dementia, still coming into the office. And
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: he just was like, he was the ultimate coach, the
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: old school coach. And so I got to be with
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: him every day all the way up. So because of that,
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: of bringing him to all the places, making sure he
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: was at work every day and everything like. That was
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: here at Ole Miss. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. So if you
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: don't come here, who knows if that even set up
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: is even kind of perfect for that. Yeah.
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: But that's where I've gotten to like, who knows what's
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: supposed to be perfect? What I thought, what we thought
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: as a plan should be, I was like totally off.
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: You know, like I'd have been like, there's no way
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: I'm going to like want to move to Oxford, Mississippi,
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: have my kid go to college here, have my other
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: kid go to high school here and love it.
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: And now I do. And who would have thought they
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: would have ever wanted to come here? Like, it's like,
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: you know, God's plan obviously makes a lot more sense
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: than ours. Because every time I take that and I'm like, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait,
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: maybe he wants it. Let me turn that over here.
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: My way. This is what I want to happen. Like
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: these people need to do this. I need to go here.
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: I need to get that job.
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: Let me control everything. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: And then, then it just doesn't work.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: It really doesn't.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: And then when I just, which is hard and I
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: just let go and just let it go and whatever's
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: going to happen is going to happen. And that tide's
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: going to come in and it's going to go out.
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: I'll just float along with it.
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: The HOV lane, dude. Hmm. What, um, who caught that clipboard?
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: Do you know?
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: They brought it back. They did?
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: Yes. Mississippi nice. So sweet of them. Told you the
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: people here are amazing.
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: God, that was great. There's nothing as good as that.
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: Because it's like when the plays work, it's like a
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: video game for me.
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: I feel like I'm playing a video game on the sideline.
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: So think like when you're playing a video game, you
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: throw your controller. That's really what I'm doing. It's still
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: the kid in me right there. You know, like throw
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: my clipboard, like your controller.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: Out of the box um you've had a quite a
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: life you know you start you started kind of you
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: know you didn't start but you kind of came on
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: a lot of people's radar in coaching at the highest
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: level right step back into college football um you've been
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: a player you've uh you know you've had like you
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: kind of a polarizing people would say type figure very
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: unique in your own way and i think after talking
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: to you i learned a little bit more about how
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: you operate so i can understand but what is like
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: a message you would get, you know, you've had, you've
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: been through divorce, you've been through, you have children, you've
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: had a lot of just experiences in your life. What,
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: for somebody out there who's getting into their middle age
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: and is kind of struggling with having a setback or something,
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: what is something you think you would share with them
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: from your experience or a thought or statement or?
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I think that like they can do it.
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: Like these things happen. you know, in life, these major
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: obstacles that seem so horrible at the time, a divorce, firings,
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: maybe you have a health scare, like these things that
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: seem so terrible and they're really not, they just feel
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: like it in the moment and they're going to pass
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: and you're going to actually look back later on and
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: be glad for them. Like my kind of major thing
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: was I got fired as a head coach at USC
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: and like my career is over. Well, if that wouldn't happen,
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: I wouldn't have gotten to work for Nick Saban for
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: three years. You know, so like whatever those things are or. Yeah,
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: your career's been over like four times.
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: That you can do it. And it's actually feels way
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: better than like, let's say you come out, like I
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: came up and got a lot of breaks because my
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: dad and stuff. And so it's like, okay, I got
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: to the top. Okay, well that felt good. But then
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: to actually have it torn down and all taken away,
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: some by circumstance, some by your own decisions and rebuild
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: from the bottom personally and professionally, it feels so much better.
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: It's like, Instead of buying the house, you build the
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: house from the beginning. And so just for people that
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: are struggling in whatever one of those areas may be,
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: like you can do it, but don't get overwhelmed. Like
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: it really is one day at a time. Like, Hey,
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: just start working out today, you know, or stop drinking today,
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: you know, or start being a better person today, whatever
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: those areas are.
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: Yeah. Just today.
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: Just today, man. Cause the other stuff's overwhelming. We don't
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: know what's going to happen next week or next month
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: or next year and just be really good at it today.
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: Hey man, man, I needed to hear that. Yeah. There's
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: something I've been like, I just feel like kind of
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: the world is ending cause it's something that's kind of
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: like just work stuff. And I'm like, what do I do?
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: But I just have to look at it as a challenge.
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: Adjust the perspective.
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: Zoom out.
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: Yeah. Zoom out.
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: Watching my dad pass in the last couple years of dementia,
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: but also watching him on what was important to him.
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: He'd been a head coach. He'd been fired. He'd been
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: through all these. It didn't matter. Whatever that is right
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: now that you're showing, you're going to look back toward
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: him like, what was I even like? losing sleep for
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: or having anxiety about that for yeah it really ain't
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: that big if you zoom out to later on you're
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: gonna look back be like man that wasn't a big
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: deal i'm glad it happened.
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: Hotty toddy man uh toddy lane kiffin thanks so much
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: dude i really appreciate it uh i hope that you
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: stay as entertaining as ever um and i'm glad that
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: you're in the sec man it's one of the greatest
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: conferences to watch and congratulations on what you guys have
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: done here at old miss man I want to thank
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: my friend Scott Sackfield and Richie Haik who helped me
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: think up questions today to talk about as well because
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: they went to school here. And, yeah, I'm looking forward
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: to having a good show here tonight.
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: Yeah, excited for your show tonight. We'll be there, and
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: our whole team's coming, actually.
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: Nuh-uh, really? Yeah, the whole team's coming. Oh, dude.
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: Yeah, we told them in the team. We had a
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: team meeting today and said, we're going tonight. We're like,
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: we got you in free. So like, yes, because we
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: don't have any money. We're like, wait, you make like
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: a million dollars. Like these guys know. But they still
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: just want something for free.
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: Yeah, look.
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: We told them you're really funny and free because I
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: have something to know you are.
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: At the end, they're still college students. You just want
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: something for free, you know. Lane Kiffin, thanks so much.
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: All right, man. Now I'm just floating on the breeze
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: And I feel I'm falling like these leaves I must
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: be Cornerstone Oh, but when
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: I reach that ground I'll share this peace of mind
- 1:21:07Speaker 3: I found I can feel it in my bones But
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: it's gonna take
