- 0:29Speaker 2: bullpen decisions late that we'll get into. Julia Rodriguez did
- 0:34Speaker 2: not start yet came into the game. We'll also talk
- 0:36Speaker 2: about that Marris fall back out of first plaice half
- 0:39Speaker 2: game behind Texas. The top of the American League West
- 0:41Speaker 2: Final game at Homestand is today. Twelve forty first pitch
- 0:43Speaker 2: Emerson Hancock will throw that for the Mariners. Then they
- 0:46Speaker 2: go to Texas to play the Rangers this weekend. Two
- 0:49Speaker 2: days now until all Seahawk veterans are due to report
- 0:51Speaker 2: for training camp. As we've seen some veterans reported early
- 0:55Speaker 2: in taking their physicals. Three days until the first practice
- 0:58Speaker 2: of camp on Saturday at the Virginia Mason A f
- 1:00Speaker 2: Letic Center in Renton. I will be there. The Seahawks
- 1:03Speaker 2: signed former Duke and Oregon cornerback Brandon Johnson. He played
- 1:06Speaker 2: three games as a rookie last season, mostly on the
- 1:08Speaker 2: Philadelphia Eagles practice squad seataway veteran Harrison Bryant tight end
- 1:12Speaker 2: they signed this spring. The NFL and HBO announced they're
- 1:15Speaker 2: going to move up the first episode airing date of
- 1:17Speaker 2: the Seahawks on training camp Hard Knocks. It's now going
- 1:19Speaker 2: to be on August to fourth, a week earlier than planned.
- 1:22Speaker 3: I want to know how must watch this is for
- 1:24Speaker 3: Seahawks fans.
- 1:25Speaker 2: I bet it's gonna be. I bet it will be.
- 1:28Speaker 2: They're really curious to see the inner workings of it
- 1:30Speaker 2: and things that I see and I can't always report well.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Now the NFL films will report that final episodes. First
- 1:36Speaker 2: episode on August fourth. Final episode is September one, of course,
- 1:40Speaker 2: that's eight days before the Seahawks begin the NFL season
- 1:42Speaker 2: against the Patriots. Remember this the first time in twenty
- 1:45Speaker 2: by the years of defending Super Bowl champion, it has
- 1:47Speaker 2: been featured on Hard Knocks. The very first Hard Knocks
- 1:50Speaker 2: had the Baltimore Ravens of twenty twenty one, coming off
- 1:52Speaker 2: their Super Bowl win. The World Cup Finals Sunday beating
- 1:55Speaker 2: Spain and Argentina had sixty million viewers in the United States.
- 1:59Speaker 2: It's more than why any of the NFL Conference championship
- 2:02Speaker 2: games in January. In fact, many many Januaries, that World
- 2:06Speaker 2: Cup Final Sunday was the most watched sporting event outside
- 2:09Speaker 2: of Super Bowl in the United States since the nineteen
- 2:12Speaker 2: ninety four Winter Olympics. The Tanya Hardy, Nancy.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Kerrigan, Mike and I turned around at a ferry dock
- 2:19Speaker 3: to watch it.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:20Speaker 3: We were traveling, We were outside of service zone and
- 2:24Speaker 3: we were like, the ferry line is short, but okay,
- 2:29Speaker 3: we have to watch this.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, work up. Still fallout from even a third
- 2:36Speaker 2: place game for fifteen million viewers. Yeah, I watched that too, exactly.
- 2:42Speaker 2: You weren't alone. Now on with the Wednesday show thanks
- 2:45Speaker 2: to Mike Benton, the captain, who was filling in most
- 2:48Speaker 2: of the I think I had Jackson Felts in here on.
- 2:50Speaker 4: We did on Monday. It was just perfect.
- 2:52Speaker 3: We needed furious Belts, FIFA Feldts and I coined him
- 2:56Speaker 3: genuine Jackson with some of his takes.
- 2:59Speaker 4: So he's got a lot of nicknames.
- 3:01Speaker 3: But furious, right, No, he wasn't, and he was pretty
- 3:06Speaker 3: he was furious about the Sounders Friday match, but he
- 3:10Speaker 3: was very, very sound on Spain winning and that was
- 3:16Speaker 3: the right team to win it.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Spain winning the World Cup. That's sixty million people in
- 3:22Speaker 2: the United States. That's a massive number for television in
- 3:25Speaker 2: this country.
- 3:25Speaker 3: But like I was saying, I'm not a soccer first person,
- 3:29Speaker 3: and but the World Cup always draws me in. And
- 3:32Speaker 3: Mike and I were coming back from a camping trip
- 3:35Speaker 3: and pulled over when we had a very short fairy line,
- 3:39Speaker 3: but had to like, we just went to this Kingston
- 3:42Speaker 3: pub and had to watch the whole thing, and we
- 3:46Speaker 3: stayed for the whole.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Thing because I'm like, well.
- 3:47Speaker 3: The next fairies now they just went to extra time
- 3:52Speaker 3: and we just decided to stay.
- 3:54Speaker 2: That's the Northwestern's dilemma, the fairy or the event you're
- 3:58Speaker 2: at exactly. That sounds so Northwest. On the show today,
- 4:02Speaker 2: I'm gonna You're gonna hear me ask NICKI even worry
- 4:04Speaker 2: about his sprained ankle from the Super Bowl and after
- 4:08Speaker 2: that's now become a topic. We know about that. We'll
- 4:11Speaker 2: talk about what the Seahawks are likely doing by put
- 4:13Speaker 2: emon worry on the physically unable to perform lists to
- 4:16Speaker 2: begin training camp. I wrote about that yesterday and my
- 4:18Speaker 2: flight back from Detroit at the News Tribune news Tribune
- 4:21Speaker 2: dot com. By the way to get out, I had
- 4:24Speaker 2: five am flight out of Detroit, which meant I had
- 4:26Speaker 2: to get up at three and drive.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Yep. I got on Zach Garrett and a.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Midnight Pacific time on Monday night is when I got
- 4:35Speaker 2: up and Man, every time i'd lead to go to
- 4:37Speaker 2: the East Coast, it reminds me how far we live
- 4:40Speaker 2: from everybody I know. Every flight takes forever.
- 4:44Speaker 3: So well, yeah, I guess I did Australia last month,
- 4:49Speaker 3: and so I'm like, that's why I decided to go
- 4:52Speaker 3: to New York for a weekend.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Like I didn't take a day off work.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Thirty six hours there, I was like, yeah, I'm gonna
- 4:57Speaker 3: crush this, and I'm like, I'm still not recovered from
- 5:00Speaker 3: the time change.
- 5:01Speaker 2: No, that's a long, long flight through Australia obviously makes sure.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Yeah, No, I met the New York one even East
- 5:08Speaker 3: Coast and you know, I was. I took a red
- 5:11Speaker 3: eye and I was good to go, good to go,
- 5:14Speaker 3: come back. I got back at like midnight on Sunday night,
- 5:17Speaker 3: came to work the next morning, and I felt okay,
- 5:20Speaker 3: and then I'm like, man, I have not recovered.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it'll take me a couple of days. Yeah, smoked.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Yesterday I got to see my mom, my twin sister.
- 5:29Speaker 2: My mom's ninety. It was awesome.
- 5:31Speaker 4: You got a lot of twins in your family.
- 5:33Speaker 2: We do. I have twin. My wife and I have twins,
- 5:35Speaker 2: and I have a twin as well. But yeah, it
- 5:37Speaker 2: was great to see. If she's ninety plowing through, doesn't
- 5:40Speaker 2: remember me. Thinks I might her husband, my dad, but
- 5:43Speaker 2: that's whatever it is, that's real.
- 5:45Speaker 4: You must take after him.
- 5:47Speaker 2: So yeah, she's like a pictures from the nineteen fifties
- 5:51Speaker 2: and their high school yearbook. I was. I brought up
- 5:53Speaker 2: to have her look at and oh there we are, like, no, mom,
- 5:57Speaker 2: that's dead. Oh those of you are listening, and some
- 6:01Speaker 2: of you maybe that stage of life with parents and
- 6:04Speaker 2: elder care. And it's wild the dementia, how fickle and
- 6:09Speaker 2: flip it and she can be with it. She played
- 6:10Speaker 2: Uno and then Boom doesn't remember who I am, and yeah,
- 6:15Speaker 2: it's uh, it's challenge. It is a challenging part of
- 6:19Speaker 2: life for sure. Unfortunately. Another example last night the Mariners
- 6:22Speaker 2: thinking about winning tomorrow's game instead of one they're playing
- 6:26Speaker 2: in and then they lost again. I mean, I'm gonna
- 6:30Speaker 2: ask you just about the night then I was just
- 6:32Speaker 2: I was like, wait, what is this a spring training game.
- 6:35Speaker 2: At eleven o'clock, we'll talk to Irwin Kishner. He's a
- 6:38Speaker 2: partner and co chair of the Sports Law Group at
- 6:40Speaker 2: Herrick in New York City. We're gonna talk about the
- 6:43Speaker 2: Seahawks new owners and then the unique process of selling
- 6:46Speaker 2: a sports team out of an estate. Of course to
- 6:48Speaker 2: Paul Gialla State selling the Seahawks for a record nine
- 6:50Speaker 2: point six billion dollars and the sale is to be
- 6:54Speaker 2: completed the presumed boat on August to twenty six. Among
- 6:58Speaker 2: other NFL owners. We'll talk about what happened next in
- 7:00Speaker 2: this process with that, and what the Seahawks sale means
- 7:04Speaker 2: to the expansion cause for the Sonics to return to Seattle,
- 7:07Speaker 2: plus all other sports franchises are When Kissner Sports Law
- 7:11Speaker 2: Group at Herrick in New York City's gonna talk about
- 7:13Speaker 2: that at eleven o'clock eleven thirty talkbacks and your text
- 7:16Speaker 2: and the Takoma Dodge text line fort ninety four five.
- 7:18Speaker 2: One first question, I'm gonna ask it for the text line,
- 7:21Speaker 2: we'll read it back to eleven thirty. What was your
- 7:23Speaker 2: reaction when the marriage brought in Michael Rucker last night,
- 7:27Speaker 2: last man in the bullpen, triple a pitcher to keep
- 7:30Speaker 2: it a three to two game in the top of
- 7:32Speaker 2: the ninth last night, Just when you were sitting behind
- 7:34Speaker 2: third base, were you just like.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Well, okay, so I had I'd like to walk around
- 7:40Speaker 3: the whole stadium get every single vantage point. But I
- 7:43Speaker 3: had one of those I need binoculars moments because who
- 7:47Speaker 3: how are they bringing in right now? I was a
- 7:50Speaker 3: little confused. And then obviously we saw what happened.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Last man in the bullpen and the three to two
- 7:57Speaker 2: game that was with spy arrested. Yeah, they could have
- 8:00Speaker 2: brought bizarre come in. I don't like to.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Question people who are baseball smarter than me, but I
- 8:08Speaker 3: do have some questions.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Well, we'll hear from Dan Wilson.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Dan Wilson explained it after the game, and his explanation
- 8:15Speaker 2: just makes you think wait a minute, Why are we
- 8:18Speaker 2: looking about tomorrow's game when it's three to two in
- 8:21Speaker 2: the ninth in this game.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Yeah, that's one of the things that I think this
- 8:30Speaker 3: whole organization, we've heard it from Jerry from a long time.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Back, said that because that's where it starts. It does.
- 8:38Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, at the end of the end of
- 8:40Speaker 3: the day, but we have heard that for a very
- 8:43Speaker 3: long time.
- 8:43Speaker 4: We're building towards this, we're building towards that.
- 8:46Speaker 3: And we see that there's everything you have, mainly the
- 8:49Speaker 3: pitching staff that we've seen them have over many years.
- 8:53Speaker 3: This is not just one pitching staff that we've seen
- 8:56Speaker 3: be phenomenal. You know, we made a verb out of
- 9:01Speaker 3: getting felixed. So yeah, so when you see this building, well, okay,
- 9:07Speaker 3: we I feel like the fan base is constantly hearing
- 9:09Speaker 3: that they're building towards something and we don't know what
- 9:14Speaker 3: it's gonna be until September.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Yeah, last night that was tough.
- 9:19Speaker 4: I stayed for the whole time.
- 9:21Speaker 2: I'd be I think probably you four to two, they lose,
- 9:25Speaker 2: Rucker gives up a home run the first bat. I mean,
- 9:27Speaker 2: you knew it was gonna happen. It's funny watching Mariner games.
- 9:30Speaker 2: You usually can't don't know the script of baseball games.
- 9:33Speaker 2: You know the script of Mariners games. Things happened that,
- 9:36Speaker 2: oh they're bringing in a lefty, here comes ref nighter
- 9:38Speaker 2: when he was healthy. I mean, you just know things
- 9:40Speaker 2: are gonna happen by watching the Marriners. Yeah, but you
- 9:42Speaker 2: didn't know Rucker was coming in. But then you did
- 9:44Speaker 2: know when Rutcker came in it was not gonna be
- 9:46Speaker 2: a three to two game by the bottom of the ninth,
- 9:47Speaker 2: and it wasn't Mariners lose four to two. First question
- 9:52Speaker 2: for the four nine, four to five one to come
- 9:53Speaker 2: to Dodge text on your reaction when they brought in
- 9:55Speaker 2: Michael Rutger last night. You'll hear from Dan Wilson here
- 9:58Speaker 2: later in the show about his explanation for that. Jessman,
- 10:00Speaker 2: you've got a new sideline duty this year, not that
- 10:03Speaker 2: you have a new job, but you're gonna make a
- 10:06Speaker 2: different sideline in Martin Stadium. I Washing State Cougars yesterday
- 10:09Speaker 2: announced that for football games the coups are switching sides.
- 10:12Speaker 2: They're going to go from the student section side opposite
- 10:15Speaker 2: the press box to the press box side of Martin
- 10:18Speaker 2: Stadium and Pulman where the season ticket holders in a
- 10:21Speaker 2: lump set. Yeah, and now the visiting team is going
- 10:24Speaker 2: to be in front of the rowdies, the Zoo crew
- 10:27Speaker 2: on the studios.
- 10:28Speaker 3: I think that it's honestly probably a good power move. Also,
- 10:32Speaker 3: I'm going to appreciate the more shade that I get
- 10:35Speaker 3: during those hot days out there. But when it comes
- 10:39Speaker 3: to at first, I was like, huh, and I'm totally
- 10:41Speaker 3: going to walk to the wrong sideline. I've been I've
- 10:43Speaker 3: done it for fourteen seasons. I'm totally gonna mess up.
- 10:46Speaker 2: For those of you who don't know, Jessmin McIntyre is
- 10:48Speaker 2: the sideline reporter on the radio broadcast for the Washington
- 10:51Speaker 2: State Football Network. That's what we're talking about here.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Yeah, if you're a U dub fan, I am the
- 10:55Speaker 3: Eliset Woodward of the Koks.
- 10:57Speaker 4: But anyway, yeah, I.
- 11:00Speaker 3: First it was questionable, and then I was like, oh,
- 11:02Speaker 3: maybe Kirby Moore on this new stuff. Maybe Harlowe, our
- 11:07Speaker 3: new athletic director, was like, hmm, we see how we're
- 11:11Speaker 3: out of the are we see the airplane? Yeah, those
- 11:15Speaker 3: little airplane shots of fireball flying through the air and everything.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Why do we need our guys in front of that.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Let's have it in front of the opponents. I feel
- 11:24Speaker 3: like there's a competitive edge that they're doing over there. Plus,
- 11:28Speaker 3: there is a lot more shade on the other sideline,
- 11:31Speaker 3: and why are we catering to those people? Plus, like
- 11:35Speaker 3: you said, season ticket holders, donors get to be closer
- 11:38Speaker 3: to the student athletes.
- 11:41Speaker 2: I assume parents as well in that group that would
- 11:43Speaker 2: be closer to their players.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Yes, yes, yes, absolutely, absolutely, there's a ton of it. Yeah,
- 11:49Speaker 3: there's a ton of reasons. I was just confused because
- 11:52Speaker 3: I never thought about it like that, like, oh, okay,
- 11:56Speaker 3: why And then I'm like, oh, there's so many whys.
- 11:58Speaker 4: This makes a ton of sense.
- 12:00Speaker 2: The last time I was at a Coup game was
- 12:02Speaker 2: the season opener a couple of seasons ago, when they
- 12:05Speaker 2: played Portland State on Labor Day weekenders. Our sun was there.
- 12:07Speaker 2: My wife and I drove over for it. It was
- 12:10Speaker 2: like two hundred degrees for a Saturday noon kickoff.
- 12:13Speaker 4: It was really hot that night.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Hot. I went over to I was sitting in the
- 12:17Speaker 2: edge of the student section. My son had gotten us
- 12:19Speaker 2: the tickets.
- 12:19Speaker 4: Yeah, you screamed my name.
- 12:21Speaker 2: I screamed dec his name. And it's hard down there.
- 12:24Speaker 2: And man and it LOIOK hot for you.
- 12:27Speaker 3: I think you said I was wearing a sweatshirt. I'm like, no,
- 12:29Speaker 3: it was a windbreaker. Any protection from the sun because
- 12:32Speaker 3: I don't have multiple times to apply on screen with
- 12:37Speaker 3: Oh no, I sweat a lot. I actually had to
- 12:39Speaker 3: go sit in the shade and one of the trainers
- 12:41Speaker 3: checked up on me because I'm like, I am gonna
- 12:44Speaker 3: lose it. I drank thirteen Gatorades that day.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Yeah, so that you won't have that in the open
- 12:50Speaker 2: games of Martin Stadium this year because now they'll be
- 12:52Speaker 2: on the sunshine. So of course some of them be
- 12:54Speaker 2: at night games for the Coon's football season.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Yeah, we kick off later, but here in Seattle we
- 13:01Speaker 3: kick off but later in the season. I'm usually used
- 13:04Speaker 3: to the last week and in August. Yeah, September sixth,
- 13:08Speaker 3: the quote unquote Apple Cup.
- 13:11Speaker 2: September sixth, Apple Cup in here where it's here, it's
- 13:16Speaker 2: a Husky stadium.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Though not yes, oh yeah, not at Luhman.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, okay, So college football is beginning in about
- 13:23Speaker 2: a month's time and some change. NFL football is beginning
- 13:27Speaker 2: starting the next couple days is when training camps get going.
- 13:31Speaker 2: It's based on the first day of your first preseason
- 13:34Speaker 2: game date, and then they back date for that from
- 13:37Speaker 2: fifteen to seventeen days or so. The Seahawks first preseason
- 13:41Speaker 2: game is August fifteenth against the Dallas Cowboys across the
- 13:43Speaker 2: street from us here at Lumenfield Training Camp already starting
- 13:48Speaker 2: this week in the sense the players have been reporting.
- 13:50Speaker 2: The rookies had to report by last week, by Friday,
- 13:54Speaker 2: and then this week veterans have been reporting, including nick
- 13:57Speaker 2: emun Warri. I'm sure you and Mike and everybody talked
- 14:00Speaker 2: about that. Yesterday the news of Nicki monworry got on
- 14:03Speaker 2: the physically enable to perform list. But the reason why
- 14:07Speaker 2: he's even on that list already and there's not camp
- 14:10Speaker 2: starting till Saturday, is that when the players, all NFL
- 14:12Speaker 2: players in all teams, when they come back for the
- 14:15Speaker 2: start a training camp, they have to take a physical exam.
- 14:18Speaker 2: They show up, they put their stuff down at their locker,
- 14:20Speaker 2: and they go straight into the exam and the physic physicals.
- 14:23Speaker 2: If you don't pass the physical for whatever reason, you
- 14:26Speaker 2: can't begin start practicing until you do. And that's why
- 14:30Speaker 2: Nicki Monmoory's on the physically able to perform list stemming
- 14:33Speaker 2: it. It seems we assume from the sprained ankle that he
- 14:36Speaker 2: got four days in practice in four days before the
- 14:39Speaker 2: Super Bowl, that at San Jose State in early February
- 14:43Speaker 2: at about ten forty five. You're gonna hear from Nicki
- 14:45Speaker 2: mon Woreri. You're gonna hear me ask him during mini
- 14:47Speaker 2: camp in June last month about that ankle, playing in
- 14:51Speaker 2: it in the Super Bowl, how affected he was by that,
- 14:54Speaker 2: and how affected he has been in the off season
- 14:57Speaker 2: in his rehab from that, what he has been doing.
- 15:00Speaker 2: You'll hear from Nicky Morworrey talking about that again. I
- 15:04Speaker 2: will talk about later the show. But to the bottom
- 15:06Speaker 2: line up front on that news is if you're on
- 15:09Speaker 2: the physic and able to perform list, the pupp list
- 15:11Speaker 2: to begin training camp, you can come off of it
- 15:12Speaker 2: at any time. Yeah, that's one reason why this seems
- 15:15Speaker 2: like a short term injury lists.
- 15:18Speaker 3: That's a good notation that, like bo I don't think
- 15:21Speaker 3: a lot of people know.
- 15:22Speaker 4: Greg, Yes, that you can so at any time at
- 15:26Speaker 4: any time season.
- 15:28Speaker 2: It's different, correct, Yeah, if you start on the pup
- 15:30Speaker 2: lit Now, only players who are on the pup list
- 15:33Speaker 2: to begin training camp are eligible to be on the
- 15:34Speaker 2: pup list to begin the regular season. If you're on
- 15:37Speaker 2: the regular season pupplist to begin the regular season, you
- 15:39Speaker 2: have to miss the first four games, right if you're
- 15:43Speaker 2: on the pup list in training camp. Not so he
- 15:45Speaker 2: could come in theoretically, he could pass his physical on Saturday,
- 15:49Speaker 2: the first day of practice, and practice on Sunday. So
- 15:52Speaker 2: that's one reason why this is injury list light for
- 15:55Speaker 2: even worry, and it's a sign that the marit the
- 15:57Speaker 2: Seahawks don't believe it's a long term absence. The other
- 16:00Speaker 2: reason is popp list players count on the ninety man
- 16:05Speaker 2: offseason row preseason roster, not like injured reserve. You go
- 16:09Speaker 2: on injured reserve, and to start a training camp, you're done.
- 16:12Speaker 2: You're out for the season. And that's for major, major injuries.
- 16:15Speaker 2: And we don't anticipate any Seahawks to be announced for
- 16:18Speaker 2: not even Zach Charbonay, who they think will be back
- 16:21Speaker 2: from his reconstructive knee surgery from February, perhaps during the
- 16:24Speaker 2: fall and maybe a few games into the season or more.
- 16:27Speaker 2: But the fact that you still count against the ninety
- 16:29Speaker 2: man roster and the fact that you can return to
- 16:31Speaker 2: practice at any point during training camp day one, day
- 16:34Speaker 2: two day fifteen, day twenty. Those are the two signs
- 16:39Speaker 2: for the pup list that the Seahawks don't think. This
- 16:41Speaker 2: is nick Demon Warry thing is a big deal. When
- 16:43Speaker 2: I was flying back yesterday, I saw a bunch of
- 16:46Speaker 2: reports even Monday night. Oh, nick Eman Warrior is on
- 16:49Speaker 2: the pup list. Holy count would.
- 16:50Speaker 4: Because people don't understand the difference.
- 16:52Speaker 2: There's a nuance to it. Yeah, yeah, and exactly. It
- 16:55Speaker 2: is not the injured reserve list. It is not even
- 16:58Speaker 2: the non football injuries. The POPPL to start training camp
- 17:01Speaker 2: is a stowaway place. And in fact, the Seahawks, in
- 17:05Speaker 2: my mind, are doing this to protect them worry from himself,
- 17:08Speaker 2: to keep him from doing too much too soon in
- 17:11Speaker 2: July and August when they don't need him to.
- 17:12Speaker 4: He kind of strikes us as that kind of player.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Correct, and he's only in his second NFL season.
- 17:18Speaker 4: And that's why I love him.
- 17:19Speaker 2: He talked last month about wanting to improve this and
- 17:22Speaker 2: improve that, improve himself to be a lead on all
- 17:24Speaker 2: downs and improve and run support and be a more
- 17:26Speaker 2: complete player. He's not going to come out half stepping
- 17:30Speaker 2: at training camp, so this makes him dials him back
- 17:35Speaker 2: the rules of the pupp list are that a player
- 17:37Speaker 2: cannot participate in practice on the field, but can do
- 17:40Speaker 2: everything else. He can be in the weight room, he
- 17:42Speaker 2: can be in the meeting rooms. He's obviously in the
- 17:44Speaker 2: locker room with the players. He's in defensive position in
- 17:47Speaker 2: defensive team meetings, so he's doing everything but on the
- 17:51Speaker 2: grass drills. He can be in a training room. We
- 17:54Speaker 2: can be the rehab, medical facilities, all of that.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Oh my god, give me that job for obviously not
- 18:00Speaker 3: the athletic talent, but give me that. Get massages, going
- 18:03Speaker 3: in ice school, give me a plunge, give me a
- 18:06Speaker 3: son like I want all of that injure.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Me all while making a couple million dollars a year.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Yeah I don't do that either, but suffice to say,
- 18:18Speaker 2: call off the alarm bells on Nicky mo worry being
- 18:20Speaker 2: on the puppish. Yes it was noticeable. Yes it was
- 18:22Speaker 2: a surprise because he had again participated in all the
- 18:26Speaker 2: off season OTA practices, mini camp practice. I saw him
- 18:28Speaker 2: out there. He's in the middle of the defense McDonald
- 18:30Speaker 2: moving him around, and then he shows up on the puplish.
- 18:33Speaker 2: You know, hey what, but it it seems like it
- 18:36Speaker 2: stems from the ankle Injin unless he's done something to
- 18:39Speaker 2: aggravate that since mid June, or if he has a
- 18:43Speaker 2: new injury from left over from mini camp, we'll see.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I don't think it's just a major deal. I know
- 18:50Speaker 2: that it's The Seahawks think it's temporary by the nature
- 18:53Speaker 2: of the list they put him on. But the fact
- 18:55Speaker 2: they put him on early in the week is because
- 18:56Speaker 2: even reported early, they also put Kenny McIntosh on the
- 19:01Speaker 2: pup list, which was not nearly the surprise. McIntosh had
- 19:03Speaker 2: reconstructive knee surgery after a knee injury early in training
- 19:07Speaker 2: camp last year. Yea, there is a belief that he
- 19:10Speaker 2: will come back at some point this season, and they
- 19:12Speaker 2: hope during training camp, but in the meantime put him
- 19:15Speaker 2: on pup with the possibility of putting him on the
- 19:17Speaker 2: pup list to begin the regular season as well. So
- 19:20Speaker 2: we'll you'll hear from Nick demon worry coming up at
- 19:23Speaker 2: about ten forty five. But I'm next, you're gonna talk
- 19:25Speaker 2: about the Mariners. They keep taking tomorrow's game and winning
- 19:29Speaker 2: that one instead of going all into the one they're playing.
- 19:32Speaker 2: We'll talk about that next ninety three point three kJ RFM,
- 19:57Speaker 2: Welcome back, rag Bell. I'm jes A McIntyre back with
- 20:00Speaker 2: you am the noon every weekday on ninety three point
- 20:03Speaker 2: three kJ RFM. I'm live from Jimmy's on First in
- 20:06Speaker 2: the Silver Cloud in right across the street from T
- 20:08Speaker 2: Mobile Park, where the Mariners and Reds will play a
- 20:11Speaker 2: twelve forty matinee to finish the homestand I'm surprised how
- 20:14Speaker 2: many people are here the restaurants.
- 20:16Speaker 4: I love it.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Wednesday in July, go Jimmy's already eighty five degrees down here.
- 20:22Speaker 2: It's gonna be ninety five today. It's fleet week, so
- 20:24Speaker 2: there are Navy officers across the street from me, and
- 20:27Speaker 2: Navy sailors.
- 20:28Speaker 4: Oh boy, they're on leave.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Maybe that's true, the Coast Guard ships.
- 20:34Speaker 3: I know that might stick in your crawl a little bit, but.
- 20:38Speaker 2: A little bit in their white uniform, but they're across
- 20:40Speaker 2: the street. Big crowd already massing. I mean it's about
- 20:44Speaker 2: not quite World Cup level crowd down here. Of course,
- 20:46Speaker 2: there'll be about half as many people thirty one thousand
- 20:48Speaker 2: probably today for the Mariners and the Reds. And then
- 20:51Speaker 2: the Mariners have a day off tomorrow to head to
- 20:53Speaker 2: Texas where they play the Rangers, who are currently in
- 20:55Speaker 2: first place in the American League West by a half
- 20:58Speaker 2: game over the Marias, who are dead at five hundred,
- 21:01Speaker 2: dead set at five. They're not dead, they looked at
- 21:04Speaker 2: at the end of the game last night. They're dead
- 21:05Speaker 2: even at five hundred. The Rangers are one game over
- 21:08Speaker 2: five hundred. Rangers and Mariners three game series in Arlington
- 21:12Speaker 2: this weekend after this homestand finale today for the Mariners.
- 21:15Speaker 2: If you wonder why it happened, a Wednesday afternoon Mattin
- 21:17Speaker 2: Egg game. By the way, a lot of the East
- 21:19Speaker 2: Coast teams when they come into Seattle then are going
- 21:23Speaker 2: home or somewhere else on the East Coast after playing
- 21:25Speaker 2: a series finale in Seattle, and so they last game
- 21:28Speaker 2: the Mariners for a getaway afternoon game in the city.
- 21:31Speaker 2: And there's limits to how many afternoon games the Mariners
- 21:34Speaker 2: could play because of traffic and the business traffic downtown.
- 21:36Speaker 2: But every East Coast team asked for this, and most teams.
- 21:41Speaker 2: There are some teams that wouldn't give it, like Texas
- 21:42Speaker 2: Speck of the Day when they played outdoors, they wouldn't
- 21:45Speaker 2: give getaway days because they didn't want to play in
- 21:47Speaker 2: the one hundred five degree heat in Arlington, Texas, so
- 21:50Speaker 2: they would play teams would played getaway night games in
- 21:53Speaker 2: Arlington before getting back to the West Coast when I
- 21:56Speaker 2: was covering ball. But that's the reason the Mariners have
- 21:58Speaker 2: a lot of end of home stand and end of
- 22:01Speaker 2: series matinee in the middle of the week games.
- 22:03Speaker 3: Well. Yeah, and even on a hot day like this,
- 22:06Speaker 3: the stadium is so comfortable to be in. Yes, it
- 22:09Speaker 3: is just like even when it rains, I was explaining.
- 22:13Speaker 3: I was talking had Scott Boris on with Softy and
- 22:16Speaker 3: Dick yesterday and I was talking to his team while
- 22:18Speaker 3: he was doing the interview, and they were talking about
- 22:21Speaker 3: the different stadiums that they've been to, because they've been
- 22:24Speaker 3: to all of them.
- 22:25Speaker 4: But they were like, is it like Minnesota is their class?
- 22:28Speaker 3: I'm like, no, even when you're inside, you're outside, it's
- 22:31Speaker 3: like the biggest gazebo you've ever been in.
- 22:34Speaker 2: That's what SOFI Stadium in England is the same thing
- 22:36Speaker 2: with open sides. Yeah and yeah. By the way, Scott Boris,
- 22:40Speaker 2: the mega agent, also represents Kate Anderson, the phenom pitcher
- 22:43Speaker 2: is going to be up. It seems any month. They're
- 22:45Speaker 2: any week now. For the Mariners into the rotation or
- 22:47Speaker 2: a Rose arena and the brand new number one draft
- 22:51Speaker 2: pick who signed yesterday for the.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Marriage Ace Rees.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Ace Reese Is signed sealed twenty fourth overall pick and
- 22:57Speaker 2: represented by Scott Boris who used to represent Kyle Rawley
- 23:01Speaker 2: until Kyle Rawley changed agents and got a new extension done.
- 23:05Speaker 4: They did not get into that yesterday.
- 23:06Speaker 2: No, I doubt they did. There's a history there. Last
- 23:10Speaker 2: night in the game, a Johanno Suarez hit his second
- 23:14Speaker 2: of two early home runs off Luis Castier. So the
- 23:16Speaker 2: ms are chasing game right away, down three to nothing,
- 23:19Speaker 2: they get it to win three to two going to
- 23:21Speaker 2: the ninth inning because they had won eight nothing the
- 23:24Speaker 2: night before. Remember Monday night, the entire bullpen of high
- 23:27Speaker 2: leverage dudes were available. They had Spire rested and available,
- 23:30Speaker 2: They had Bizardo. They even had Andre's Munnos if they
- 23:34Speaker 2: wanted to use them, although they don't use them unless
- 23:36Speaker 2: it's a tie game or safe situation. They're just one
- 23:39Speaker 2: of their rules. None of those dudes pitched. They were
- 23:42Speaker 2: available last night in a three to two game for
- 23:44Speaker 2: the ninth inning, it was triple a pitcher Michael Rutcker
- 23:48Speaker 2: first batter Rutger faces in a three to two game.
- 23:51Speaker 2: This is what happened last hands for the Reds. Right here,
- 23:53Speaker 2: They've got the last half of the warder coming up,
- 23:56Speaker 2: and they want to face the right hand or and.
- 23:58Speaker 5: Michael Rucker, and Low drives the spoil of Lutfield a
- 24:01Speaker 5: Rose Arena, fading way back opposite.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Way and gone.
- 24:04Speaker 5: He has put out of power Teror Blake a dozen
- 24:07Speaker 5: for Low. That's a big insurance run. It's four two
- 24:11Speaker 5: Reds in the night, a lot oft four game hitting streak,
- 24:14Speaker 5: but during that streak three home runs and now six.
- 24:17Speaker 2: RBIs momentum over game over. There's the Reds TV call
- 24:23Speaker 2: of home run last night by Low that made a
- 24:25Speaker 2: three to two game of four to two game MS
- 24:27Speaker 2: go meekly in the bottom of the ninth lose four
- 24:28Speaker 2: to two. Magic Dan Wilson was asked after the game,
- 24:31Speaker 2: why you put Rutger it instead of Spire, Bizarro or
- 24:34Speaker 2: anything else anybody?
- 24:35Speaker 5: Dan?
- 24:36Speaker 6: For the ninth obviously won one game.
- 24:37Speaker 7: You had Rutger pitch yesterday, Spider and Bizarrego didn't go yesterday.
- 24:42Speaker 7: Just what kind of went into that decision and wrot
- 24:44Speaker 7: those guys down in.
- 24:45Speaker 8: That not any I mean, you know, you know, again
- 24:48Speaker 8: with with being down in that situation, you know we've
- 24:52Speaker 8: got a quick turnaround again tomorrow, and so you know
- 24:56Speaker 8: you've got to weigh all your options there. And uh,
- 24:58Speaker 8: you know, Rock did throw the ball extremely well last night,
- 25:00Speaker 8: and you know I thought he threw the ball well too,
- 25:03Speaker 8: just you know, Lowe was able to get him there
- 25:05Speaker 8: that first first batter of the inning. But outside that,
- 25:08Speaker 8: you know, continued to throw the ball well.
- 25:11Speaker 2: He pitched well the night before and an ate nothing game,
- 25:14Speaker 2: not exactly high leverage.
- 25:16Speaker 4: That was a pretty tough situation that he was put in.
- 25:20Speaker 2: When when you hear him say we have a tight
- 25:24Speaker 2: a short turnaround tomorrow. As soon as I heard him
- 25:27Speaker 2: say that might come on, we've talked about this. You
- 25:32Speaker 2: give away games in June and July, and then you
- 25:35Speaker 2: have a struggle in September to win the division. This
- 25:37Speaker 2: division sucks. Win the division now by winning these games
- 25:41Speaker 2: and going for the win. Now, yeah, they're down three two,
- 25:43Speaker 2: but don't bring in your lowest leverage triple a guy
- 25:46Speaker 2: in the top of the ninth who pitched the night before.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Over rested dudes, just because you have a game again
- 25:51Speaker 2: the next afternoon. You may not have a safe situation
- 25:54Speaker 2: or a high leverage situation the next day. Who knows
- 25:57Speaker 2: what the next day brings might be liking it strikes
- 25:59Speaker 2: in the middle of the afternoon, Who knows what's gonna
- 26:01Speaker 2: happen the next day? You know what's happening right in
- 26:04Speaker 2: front of you? How did that strike you? Four nine
- 26:07Speaker 2: four five one to come a dodge tech line. And
- 26:09Speaker 2: I will say this, when a manager says that when
- 26:12Speaker 2: he's looking at beyond the game, he's watching from the
- 26:15Speaker 2: dugout that comes from higher, that is not a manager
- 26:20Speaker 2: managing by his gut. He's managing by a plan that's
- 26:23Speaker 2: laid out for him by the general manager and the
- 26:25Speaker 2: team president going into a series, going into a game.
- 26:28Speaker 2: And we talked to Jim Bowden about this. We talked
- 26:31Speaker 2: to Steve Phillips about this, about how baseball has really
- 26:34Speaker 2: the advent of the analytics and the numbers driven analysis
- 26:38Speaker 2: of what to make decisions during a game, how it's
- 26:40Speaker 2: changed baseball, and that general managers now meet with managers
- 26:44Speaker 2: daily at times before games on game plans used to
- 26:48Speaker 2: be We've talked about Steve Phillips talked about this used
- 26:50Speaker 2: to be a general manager would meet with the manager,
- 26:52Speaker 2: maybe at the beginning of a series, maybe begin at
- 26:55Speaker 2: the beginning of a week. Here's who's here's who would
- 26:58Speaker 2: write what not when we went on to stay away
- 26:59Speaker 2: from I'm in the bullpen, here are the situations who
- 27:01Speaker 2: we might want to use these guys and then let
- 27:03Speaker 2: the manager manage. Not now because of all the numbers
- 27:07Speaker 2: and the analytics and rest days and rest pitches and
- 27:10Speaker 2: number pick all the stuff that goes into their over
- 27:14Speaker 2: analytics of baseball today, you get this kind of stuff
- 27:17Speaker 2: where the manager says, well, we got a short turn
- 27:19Speaker 2: around them. Would you ever hear Loup Penella's say we
- 27:22Speaker 2: got a short term say why the hellp we lose
- 27:24Speaker 2: this game?
- 27:25Speaker 3: Right? I feel like it's a little unfair to Dan actually,
- 27:28Speaker 3: just because what else is he supposed to say in
- 27:31Speaker 3: that situation.
- 27:32Speaker 4: And yeah, both Steve Phillips and.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Jim Bowden told us that times have changed and it's
- 27:38Speaker 3: very different and they're not surprised that this is the
- 27:41Speaker 3: way it is.
- 27:42Speaker 4: But we're never gonna find out.
- 27:44Speaker 3: On the media side, We're we're never gonna find out
- 27:47Speaker 3: exactly who's.
- 27:49Speaker 4: Pulling triggers back there.
- 27:50Speaker 3: But I don't know what else Dan could have said
- 27:54Speaker 3: in that situation.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Just don't say we got a game tomorrow.
- 28:00Speaker 3: Well, it's kind of going back to what I was
- 28:02Speaker 3: saying earlier, is that this fan base is kind of
- 28:04Speaker 3: like throttled by though we're building to something you're you're
- 28:08Speaker 3: gonna see eventually, right, you know, it's like too much exactly.
- 28:13Speaker 2: And but I mean when he said that, the first
- 28:16Speaker 2: thing I thought was, come on, when the game you're in.
- 28:18Speaker 2: But the second thing I thought definitely was this is
- 28:21Speaker 2: from hire you have to This is Dan Wilson saying
- 28:24Speaker 2: yes and doing exactly what he's been hired to do,
- 28:27Speaker 2: which is carry out the wishes of the front office
- 28:29Speaker 2: and above. I just wish Dan Wilson could manage the
- 28:33Speaker 2: game himself. And maybe he isn't good at it. Maybe
- 28:37Speaker 2: it is that he has a black spot in his
- 28:40Speaker 2: head about and just a blind spot toward using bullpen
- 28:44Speaker 2: guys and the wrong instincts that the wrong. Maybe it is,
- 28:48Speaker 2: but I suspect that he isn't pulling all those triggers
- 28:50Speaker 2: and levers and that he is, like you said, Jessman,
- 28:53Speaker 2: what's he gonna say after the game. Well, my GM
- 28:55Speaker 2: and president told me I have to do it this way.
- 28:57Speaker 4: Well, he's not gonna say that.
- 28:58Speaker 2: No, he's obviously not gonna say that, but I mean.
- 29:01Speaker 3: He I think he handled it pretty well considering Okay,
- 29:05Speaker 3: why did you make that decision? Well, he threw it
- 29:08Speaker 3: well yesterday, Like he's not going to say I don't know,
- 29:13Speaker 3: or I got a call to the bullpen or I'm
- 29:16Speaker 3: sorry to the dugout from upstairs.
- 29:18Speaker 4: Like he can't say that. So I just don't blame Dan.
- 29:23Speaker 2: I don't either. I think he is a product of
- 29:26Speaker 2: the people who hired him, and the reason he's here
- 29:29Speaker 2: is because of this situation. Because he'll say yes and
- 29:32Speaker 2: he'll carry out the duties. And that's why they don't
- 29:34Speaker 2: have a Joe Madden or an Alex Korra or anybody else.
- 29:37Speaker 2: That's why they're not going to make a decision a
- 29:40Speaker 2: managerial change in the middle of the season. This is
- 29:42Speaker 2: the guy that handpicked. He never managed before, does like
- 29:46Speaker 2: Scott Servers, he'd never managed before. He is hand picked
- 29:48Speaker 2: for this job. Why is he hand picked because he
- 29:50Speaker 2: agreed to do this. He agreed to follow the grand plan,
- 29:54Speaker 2: a long term. Whatever the analytics say about pictures and
- 29:57Speaker 2: back to back and when they use this reliever against
- 30:00Speaker 2: this whatever. But the fact that Rucker was good and
- 30:03Speaker 2: shoving and ate nothing gain the night before the team
- 30:06Speaker 2: that was ready to go back to the hotel versus
- 30:08Speaker 2: a three two game the next night doesn't make sense
- 30:10Speaker 2: to me at all.
- 30:12Speaker 4: I totally understand exactly what you're saying.
- 30:15Speaker 3: But when you were on the East Coast on Monday,
- 30:19Speaker 3: Logan Gilbert joined Softie and Dick Yeah, I heard that, yeah,
- 30:22Speaker 3: And I want to revisit this one thing that he
- 30:25Speaker 3: said when it came to the criticism of Dan Wilson.
- 30:27Speaker 7: I always try to be pretty nice, but like if
- 30:30Speaker 7: people if I ever heard people say that, that's probably
- 30:32Speaker 7: when I would get fired up.
- 30:33Speaker 2: I think.
- 30:35Speaker 7: I think that's ridiculous that people would ever say that.
- 30:37Speaker 7: Dan's one of the best people I've ever met. I
- 30:40Speaker 7: think he's amazing at his job and what he does
- 30:42Speaker 7: and the way he gets us going. Like you know,
- 30:44Speaker 7: nobody outside of here knows what it's like in a
- 30:47Speaker 7: locker room with him. Only the players do. And I
- 30:49Speaker 7: think every single one of us would go to bat
- 30:51Speaker 7: for him. So he's the man. I love playing under him,
- 30:53Speaker 7: and I hope he stays here forever.
- 30:55Speaker 3: And go ahead yeah, yes, on with And the one
- 31:01Speaker 3: thing that I would say about that is that there
- 31:03Speaker 3: is a very fine line between being a great manager, coach,
- 31:09Speaker 3: whatever sport when it comes to being able to rally
- 31:12Speaker 3: guys and also being a good technical person. And I
- 31:16Speaker 3: think Dan has the rally part totally locked up and
- 31:20Speaker 3: he might need an assist from the upstairs people.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Some of the upstairs assists are hurting him, to be honest,
- 31:28Speaker 2: hurting the day.
- 31:28Speaker 4: To day if that's it's happening.
- 31:30Speaker 2: Maybe the long term, yes, But you know what, Dan
- 31:32Speaker 2: Wilson also is a former player who spent his entire
- 31:35Speaker 2: career twenty years in a dugout in a clubhouse with
- 31:39Speaker 2: the guys he is. He is obviously going to be
- 31:42Speaker 2: a player's backers. He backs them publicly, he never criticizes.
- 31:47Speaker 2: He also probably is a shield from the front office
- 31:50Speaker 2: and what they want to do.
- 31:52Speaker 4: He is buffer. He is totally buffer.
- 31:54Speaker 2: And you don't think Logan Gilbert and at all appreciate
- 31:57Speaker 2: that that they have a guy who's their back and
- 32:01Speaker 2: buffering them from what Jerry Depoto and Justin Hollander and
- 32:05Speaker 2: all of them pushed down on to Wilson. And then
- 32:07Speaker 2: Wilson's the middleman. He's the guy who has to carry
- 32:09Speaker 2: out those plans, but he also has to, as you mentioned,
- 32:12Speaker 2: rally and support his players inside the clock. Job correct.
- 32:17Speaker 2: And you've never heard me say they should fire Dan Wilson,
- 32:20Speaker 2: and I never will. I have not, and I don't
- 32:23Speaker 2: think they ever will. Not during a season for sure,
- 32:27Speaker 2: because of just like what happened last night, He's carrying
- 32:31Speaker 2: out the wishes of the front office in a way
- 32:35Speaker 2: most managers would not, because most managers have experience in
- 32:38Speaker 2: a dugout and have guts and a gut feeling toward
- 32:41Speaker 2: a game. And here's what my eyes tell me, Wilson
- 32:43Speaker 2: does not. Wilson has that from a catcher's perspective, but
- 32:46Speaker 2: he doesn't have that from a managerial dugout perspective, and
- 32:50Speaker 2: that made him an ideal candidate, like Scott's service was,
- 32:53Speaker 2: to be the manager here. This regime wants someone to
- 32:56Speaker 2: be analytic driven, to follow the grand plan, master plan,
- 33:01Speaker 2: and they don't want it, appears, unless someone consume me
- 33:04Speaker 2: evidence otherwise. They don't want a guy managing on gut instincts.
- 33:07Speaker 2: They don't want a manager who says nah. Michael Rucker
- 33:11Speaker 2: three to two top of the night. No, No, I'm
- 33:12Speaker 2: going with Spire, I'm going Bizarto. Hell I might even
- 33:15Speaker 2: go with my all star closing munnos throw one hundred
- 33:17Speaker 2: and two so we can keep this game at three two.
- 33:19Speaker 2: They don't want a manager that way. They want a
- 33:21Speaker 2: manager who follows the grand plan. And then the grand
- 33:24Speaker 2: plan obviously was let's stay away when we're behind in
- 33:27Speaker 2: a ninth inning from the highleveries guys, because we've got
- 33:29Speaker 2: a game tomorrow afternoon. Who that's a lot for a
- 33:34Speaker 2: guy or gal who spent one hundred and three hundred,
- 33:36Speaker 2: four hundred dollars to take his family to a game
- 33:38Speaker 2: last night and wanting him to win that game last night,
- 33:40Speaker 2: and wanting to see Julio Rodriguez in the lineup last night.
- 33:43Speaker 3: It's not the friendliest quote to read if you're a fan.
- 33:47Speaker 3: I do understand that part, and I'm trying not to
- 33:50Speaker 3: be defensive. I'm just I'm an even Stephen person. I
- 33:54Speaker 3: like to see both sides of everything, and yeah, it's.
- 33:59Speaker 4: Not the friendliest quot.
- 34:02Speaker 2: But you're right. There's a couple people in the text
- 34:04Speaker 2: on two five to three saying the question to Dan
- 34:06Speaker 2: should have been who made the decision? See if he
- 34:08Speaker 2: says it himself, it would be tough to admit it.
- 34:10Speaker 2: He's never going to say that, and anyone who's in
- 34:13Speaker 2: a clubhouse and in a press game, a postgame presser
- 34:15Speaker 2: who's on the team beat every day, no better than
- 34:18Speaker 2: to ask him that. I would never ask that question
- 34:21Speaker 2: if I know the answer to it, even if I
- 34:22Speaker 2: wanted to get it in print. That's not far to Wilson. Yes,
- 34:25Speaker 2: you're putting him in a position that you're asking him
- 34:28Speaker 2: to go against the people who hire and pay his paychecks.
- 34:31Speaker 2: And he's not going to do that publicly. So don't
- 34:34Speaker 2: get him in a position where he'll lie or he'll
- 34:35Speaker 2: say something misleading As a journalist, I'm just telling you
- 34:39Speaker 2: from a daily beat writer, been doing it for twenty
- 34:41Speaker 2: five years. Yeah, I would never ask that question if
- 34:43Speaker 2: I already knew why he didn't do that, If I
- 34:46Speaker 2: knew the answer to the question, you're setting up your
- 34:48Speaker 2: interview subject and that's no way to retain a professional relationship, right.
- 34:52Speaker 3: One headline is not one. Clickbait is not worth your relationship.
- 34:56Speaker 3: And also, we can wait and learn more about this
- 35:00Speaker 3: throughout the season, and you don't get to learn more
- 35:02Speaker 3: if you're a jerk.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I get it, But that's the difference between a
- 35:08Speaker 2: journalist and not to say fans couldn't go into a
- 35:11Speaker 2: clubhouse or a post game prescottin's and ask questions. But
- 35:13Speaker 2: if you're on the beat every day, you understand those
- 35:16Speaker 2: nuances and you can't just fire off a question like that,
- 35:19Speaker 2: who made that decision on Rucker in the ninth You
- 35:22Speaker 2: just can't do that.
- 35:22Speaker 3: No, I think it was Tim Booth that asked that question.
- 35:25Speaker 3: It was what went into it correct. It is a
- 35:28Speaker 3: very very small nuance. But having been a reporter for
- 35:32Speaker 3: fifteen years myself, I get it too right.
- 35:36Speaker 2: And so to answer that question, and no disrespect to
- 35:40Speaker 2: the two five three texter, I understand a fan's perspective
- 35:42Speaker 2: as well. But that's the job of a journalist to
- 35:45Speaker 2: be the filter to realize, wait a minute, what happened here?
- 35:48Speaker 2: Why did it happen? How can I ask a question
- 35:50Speaker 2: to get the person to explain it without putting him
- 35:54Speaker 2: in a position where he has to be evasive or misleading.
- 35:57Speaker 3: So you're also offering the opportunity to say, you know,
- 36:03Speaker 3: he could have said, wow, I got a call for
- 36:05Speaker 3: rom upstairs, like you're opening the door for him to
- 36:08Speaker 3: answer the way he can or wants to. Yeah, you're
- 36:12Speaker 3: not pigeonholing him into a corner exactly.
- 36:15Speaker 2: And that's off to Tim Mooth, friend of mine. We
- 36:17Speaker 2: worked together at the AP twenty years ago, and that's
- 36:20Speaker 2: why he'll asked the question the way he did went
- 36:22Speaker 2: into that decision. Tim probably knows a lot of what
- 36:25Speaker 2: went into the decision, but he didn't put manager Dan
- 36:28Speaker 2: Wilson in a position, an awkward position to go against.
- 36:31Speaker 4: This bosses wouldn't have been good for anybody.
- 36:33Speaker 2: No, So that explains that four nine, four to five
- 36:36Speaker 2: one on the Takomadadge text line. Your reaction to all
- 36:39Speaker 2: of that, just know there's more than meets the eye there. Yes,
- 36:43Speaker 2: it looks like Dan Wilson doesn't know how to manage
- 36:45Speaker 2: a bullpen. There's much more to it than that. And
- 36:48Speaker 2: it starts with the people at the very top of
- 36:50Speaker 2: the baseball organization. Hell, it talks. It stops at the
- 36:53Speaker 2: very top of the organization with the Chairman, John Stanton
- 36:56Speaker 2: and the fact that he had the manager in place
- 36:59Speaker 2: that will carry out decisions like last night, I'm next,
- 37:03Speaker 2: Let's go to Sea Oork training camp. It starts on Saturday.
- 37:06Speaker 2: The veteran deadline to report is on Friday. The big
- 37:09Speaker 2: news of the week so far as nick em and
- 37:11Speaker 2: Worry being on the physically unable to perform list, I'll
- 37:14Speaker 2: explain what exactly the pup list it. No, it's not
- 37:16Speaker 2: putting doggies on a list, although they do call Dick
- 37:19Speaker 2: evan Ori a dog. We'll talk about the pup list,
- 37:22Speaker 2: what it means, why Emon Worry is on it, and
- 37:24Speaker 2: you'll hear from Nick Emon Worriy himself. That's next on
- 37:27Speaker 2: ninety three point three KJRFM. Welcome back, Greg Bell, Jasmin
- 37:50Speaker 2: McIntyre with you. So we are every weekday ten am
- 37:52Speaker 2: to noon here on ninety three point three kJ r
- 37:55Speaker 2: f M. They're actually Cincinnati Reds fans here inside. Jimmy's
- 37:58Speaker 2: on first account of them. You know what my theory
- 38:02Speaker 2: on that hadjustment as a native Ohio and a lot
- 38:04Speaker 2: of people, a lot of people have moved away from
- 38:07Speaker 2: Ohio are from Ohio that lived other places, including the
- 38:12Speaker 2: West Coast.
- 38:13Speaker 4: I was born in Sandusky, were you really yes?
- 38:15Speaker 2: Point?
- 38:17Speaker 4: Yeah, we went there, Yeah.
- 38:19Speaker 2: Your point. I got married thirty minutes from Sandusky over
- 38:22Speaker 2: the Ohio I.
- 38:23Speaker 4: Just was so excited when the movie Tommy Boy came out.
- 38:26Speaker 2: That's right, his dad sold insurance or whatever he did.
- 38:30Speaker 3: It was brake pads. I have that movie memorize.
- 38:36Speaker 2: The Mariners are playing across the street from me at
- 38:39Speaker 2: T Mobile Park at twelve forty this homestand finale.
- 38:42Speaker 4: And you are a Jimmy's and I'm jealous.
- 38:44Speaker 2: I'm sorry, I'm surprised how many people are here.
- 38:47Speaker 4: It's I love it act.
- 38:49Speaker 3: Yeah, that is like one of the best pregame spots
- 38:52Speaker 3: to do. You just walk across the street and you're
- 38:54Speaker 3: at the stadium.
- 38:55Speaker 2: I'm across the literally forty feet from the left field
- 38:58Speaker 2: gate where they're already lined up for it. Twelve forty,
- 39:00Speaker 2: start trying to get into the yard. It's ninety minutes
- 39:02Speaker 2: before first pitch the gates open, and then the Mariners
- 39:05Speaker 2: after today have a day off to fly to Arlington,
- 39:08Speaker 2: Texas for a three game series against the Rangers beginning
- 39:11Speaker 2: on Friday afternoon our time. Rangers a half game up
- 39:14Speaker 2: on the Mariners in the America League West. The Seahawks
- 39:18Speaker 2: veterans are continuing to report for training camp. The deadline
- 39:21Speaker 2: do so for veterans is Friday, and then Saturday is
- 39:25Speaker 2: the first practice of training camp at the Virginia Mason
- 39:27Speaker 2: Athletics Center. I'll be out there for the News Tribune, well,
- 39:30Speaker 2: all of us at KGr will be out there Monday, Tuesday,
- 39:33Speaker 2: Wednesdays all the way through training camp into August twentieth
- 39:37Speaker 2: or so, and then the Seahawks are going to have
- 39:39Speaker 2: a joint practice in Nashville, Tennessee against the Titans. One
- 39:43Speaker 2: practice not too like they did last time a couple
- 39:45Speaker 2: summers ago, and then a preseason game. The second one
- 39:49Speaker 2: is in Nashville on a Sunday night, so it's a
- 39:51Speaker 2: Friday practice joint practice with the Titans before a Sunday
- 39:54Speaker 2: game in Nashville. I'll be there too in Nashville for
- 39:58Speaker 2: the News Tribune and broadcasting live from Nashville in from
- 40:01Speaker 2: the joint practice on kjar or October what is that
- 40:05Speaker 2: twenty second, twenty third time and during the preseason. But
- 40:10Speaker 2: for now, the news of the week was that Nicki
- 40:12Speaker 2: Monori was on He put on the physically unable to
- 40:16Speaker 2: Perform list. That's the POPP list, as I wrote in
- 40:19Speaker 2: the News Tribune at the Newstribune dot com yesterday, that's
- 40:22Speaker 2: really injury list light you're not injured reserve and out
- 40:26Speaker 2: for the season. You can come back from the pup
- 40:28Speaker 2: list at any point as soon as you pass a physical.
- 40:31Speaker 2: The meaning he's on the pup list because he didn't
- 40:33Speaker 2: pass the physical upon reporting last month the Mini caamp.
- 40:36Speaker 2: We talked to Nicki Monwory falling in practice. He was
- 40:39Speaker 2: fully participating in the practices during OTA's and minicamp, although
- 40:42Speaker 2: they were in shorts and T shirts, but he was
- 40:44Speaker 2: out there on the field and the defense starting as
- 40:46Speaker 2: he normally is. I asked him in mid June even
- 40:49Speaker 2: worry specifically about his sprained ankle from practice happened four
- 40:52Speaker 2: days before the Super Bowl at San Jose State. He
- 40:55Speaker 2: played anyway, came back to practice two days later a
- 40:58Speaker 2: low ankle spring, and I asked also, even where last
- 41:02Speaker 2: month did that ankle limit him at all this offseason
- 41:05Speaker 2: after he played seventy of the seahawks seventy two defensive
- 41:08Speaker 2: back snaps in Super Bowl sixty. This is what Nicki
- 41:11Speaker 2: mon Warri said.
- 41:12Speaker 9: It was a little, you know, in my mind, I
- 41:14Speaker 9: kind of made my mind up about playing because it
- 41:16Speaker 9: was like, you know, for me personally, probably would have
- 41:19Speaker 9: sucked just to go throughout the whole season, all the
- 41:21Speaker 9: ups and downs, everything we've done been through just to
- 41:23Speaker 9: not playing the Super Bowl. So I made my decision
- 41:26Speaker 9: to play that night. And it felt good going out
- 41:28Speaker 9: there and playing, like, you know, had my teammate support,
- 41:31Speaker 9: and I mean, you know, we dominated out there. So
- 41:35Speaker 9: it's pretty pretty pretty easy for me to just to
- 41:37Speaker 9: be out there and just do what I can do.
- 41:39Speaker 2: I don't limited, were you man?
- 41:41Speaker 10: Uh honestly, I was full of go.
- 41:43Speaker 9: So when I went out there, I did pregame warm
- 41:45Speaker 9: ups and I went at a little hard in pregame
- 41:48Speaker 9: warm ups. I think I went a little too hard
- 41:49Speaker 9: and I was like really pushing my ankle and it
- 41:51Speaker 9: was like, you know, it was holding up.
- 41:52Speaker 2: It was good, and uh, we're all good. Nah.
- 41:54Speaker 9: So you weren't limited put a super Bowl and had
- 41:57Speaker 9: to shut it down or nah, you know. I mean,
- 41:59Speaker 9: of course at the Super Bowl and it just had
- 42:00Speaker 9: to recover, you know, stayed in Seattle for a little
- 42:03Speaker 9: bit while everybody left back to the East Coast, recovered,
- 42:05Speaker 9: did what I had to do in the off season,
- 42:07Speaker 9: did rehab a lot just to fortify my ankle, make
- 42:10Speaker 9: sure there was no problems right now.
- 42:11Speaker 2: So that's Nick even worry at Mini camp last month
- 42:16Speaker 2: and then what's happened since then is the Seahawks have
- 42:18Speaker 2: put him on the physically being able to perform us.
- 42:20Speaker 2: You heard him say that he did a lot of
- 42:22Speaker 2: rehab in the off season. He stayed in Seattle. He's
- 42:25Speaker 2: from South Carolina. He still lives there. But instead of
- 42:27Speaker 2: going back to South Carolina where he lives in the
- 42:30Speaker 2: off season like a lot of the other East Coast
- 42:32Speaker 2: guys did right after the Super Bowl in the Super
- 42:34Speaker 2: Bowl parade, he stayed in Seattle. He stayed at Seahawks
- 42:37Speaker 2: headquarters and worked on the ankle with trainers and did rehab.
- 42:41Speaker 2: He continued that on a plan back on the East
- 42:43Speaker 2: Coast and then he participated in no tas in Mini camp.
- 42:46Speaker 2: So to me, jessm in this move again, is the
- 42:50Speaker 2: Seahawks protecting Nick even worriy from him.
- 42:52Speaker 4: Is just going to use the word precautionary.
- 42:55Speaker 2: Absolutely, Yes, I mean absolutely the precautionary. That's maybe the
- 42:59Speaker 2: best definitie of the pup list. It's a precautionary measure.
- 43:03Speaker 2: At this time, it's July exactly. Yeah, the season doesn't
- 43:08Speaker 2: start till September the seventh. There's nothing. The Seahawks need
- 43:11Speaker 2: to see from Nicki mnworry on July to twenty fifth,
- 43:13Speaker 2: sixth seventh. That's going to determine how much he plays
- 43:16Speaker 2: and where he fits into defense. He's an integral piece
- 43:19Speaker 2: to the McDonald's multiplicity on defense, so that's what this is.
- 43:24Speaker 2: They also put Kenny McIntosh on the pup list. We
- 43:27Speaker 2: mentioned that is a different situation because players on the
- 43:30Speaker 2: pup list the beginning of training camp are then eligible
- 43:32Speaker 2: if they stay on it throughout camp to be on
- 43:34Speaker 2: the puplist to begin the season, and he'd miss the
- 43:36Speaker 2: minimum of the first four games. McIntosh coming off reconstructive
- 43:39Speaker 2: knee surgery. He blew out his knee in the first
- 43:42Speaker 2: days of training camp last summer. He's had an injury
- 43:45Speaker 2: filled career, including his first training camp after the Seahawks
- 43:49Speaker 2: drafted him three years ago. He's going into the final
- 43:50Speaker 2: year of his rookie contract suddenly. Tyron Browden, former undrafted
- 43:54Speaker 2: last year, was an undrafted rookie wide receiver at six
- 43:57Speaker 2: foot five plus out of Arkansas, the converting him the cornerback,
- 44:01Speaker 2: one of the tallest cornerbacks to ever appeared in an
- 44:02Speaker 2: NFL game. If he makes it. He was injured late
- 44:05Speaker 2: in practice late last season, and he has been sidelined
- 44:09Speaker 2: all offseason. He's on the pupp list as well. And
- 44:12Speaker 2: then Devin Eastern, the seventh round pick, the defensive tackle
- 44:16Speaker 2: that they got from Minnesota in the draft this April.
- 44:19Speaker 2: He was limited during OTA's and Mini camps by injury.
- 44:22Speaker 2: He is also on the pup list. There may be
- 44:24Speaker 2: a couple more because as the reterans report here the
- 44:27Speaker 2: next couple of days, they'll have to take their physicals
- 44:28Speaker 2: and if they fail them, they become candidates for a
- 44:31Speaker 2: pupplist or an injury list. Still to be determined as
- 44:34Speaker 2: the status of Zach Charbonay, the running back who had
- 44:36Speaker 2: reconstructive knee surgery in February following his injury in the
- 44:40Speaker 2: divisional round of the playoffs, He's a likely pup list
- 44:43Speaker 2: candidate that would keep him sidelined for the start of
- 44:47Speaker 2: miniicip But again Eamon Worry, pupp list a different deal.
- 44:51Speaker 2: Puplist players can come off at any time, and puppulist
- 44:55Speaker 2: players count against the ninety man preseason roster limit. All
- 44:58Speaker 2: that suggesting that this is a temporary deal. Also temporaries
- 45:03Speaker 2: the fact that Devin Witherspoon hasn't signed a new deal.
- 45:05Speaker 2: I see national reports in Rappidport this morning reporting that
- 45:08Speaker 2: a deal is imminent, likely to get done in the
- 45:09Speaker 2: first couple of days, and it's probably going to be
- 45:11Speaker 2: thirty one million a year plus to Eclipse Trent McDuffie.
- 45:15Speaker 2: We've been talking about that for months, that that was
- 45:17Speaker 2: the contract McDuffie that hit Witherspoon and his agents have
- 45:20Speaker 2: been targeting. We've also talked about how John Schneider's mo
- 45:24Speaker 2: is to sign Foundational guys going into the final year
- 45:27Speaker 2: of their deal. In the first couple of days of
- 45:30Speaker 2: training camp, and I know they exercise their fifty year
- 45:32Speaker 2: contract option for twenty one million dollars on Witherspoon. That
- 45:35Speaker 2: buys him this year. He's under contract. But they did
- 45:38Speaker 2: the same thing with Smith and Jigbit in March, gave
- 45:41Speaker 2: him a new deal on top of his extension and
- 45:43Speaker 2: keep him under contract through twenty thirty one. Expect the
- 45:46Speaker 2: same thing to happen with the Seahawks in Devin Witherspoon,
- 45:49Speaker 2: perhaps as early as Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday around that
- 45:53Speaker 2: time period, and it expected to be around thirty one
- 45:56Speaker 2: million dollars to be the highest paid quarterback in the NFL.
- 46:00Speaker 2: I'p next, let's talk about the Seahawks sale. Last week
- 46:03Speaker 2: I sat down and talked from it in New York
- 46:07Speaker 2: with a sports law expert on the situation with the Seahawks.
- 46:12Speaker 2: You're gonna hear from a lawyer in the Herrick Sports Group,
- 46:16Speaker 2: Irwin Kishner. He's going to talk about the nuances a
- 46:19Speaker 2: selling out of an estate, What to expect next in
- 46:21Speaker 2: this sale process that's supposed to culminate in a vote
- 46:24Speaker 2: to August of twenty sixth among NFL owners, And what
- 46:27Speaker 2: does sale may mean for the Sonics value of an
- 46:30Speaker 2: expansion franchise in Seattle. Erwin Kishner, co chair of the
- 46:34Speaker 2: Corporate Sports Law Group with Herrick in New York City,
- 46:37Speaker 2: is up next to ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Now from the Star Renolds Sports Test Your ninety three
- 46:54Speaker 1: point three KJRFM sports headlines.
- 46:58Speaker 2: Team Mobile Park Here, Jimmy's on First You by Frost
- 47:00Speaker 2: Brewed Corsley choose Chill Mariners Last last night for two
- 47:04Speaker 2: to the Reds. Suarez hit a home run off his
- 47:07Speaker 2: former team. Luis Castello gave up a couple home runs
- 47:09Speaker 2: early Mariners fall out of first place, a half game
- 47:11Speaker 2: behind Texas atop the AL West final game me to
- 47:14Speaker 2: homestand across the street from me twelve forty first pitch
- 47:16Speaker 2: Emerson Hancock thrown for the MS. Then they go to
- 47:18Speaker 2: Texas to play the Rangers for first place. This weekend,
- 47:21Speaker 2: two teams two days excuse me, until all Seahawk veterans
- 47:25Speaker 2: are due to report to training camp three days until
- 47:27Speaker 2: the first practice of camp on Saturday. Players are still
- 47:30Speaker 2: reporting and taking physicals when they do, and one of
- 47:32Speaker 2: them was Zach Charbonay. He failed that he's on the
- 47:34Speaker 2: physically unable to perform list. The team announced that within
- 47:37Speaker 2: the last hour or so. That's exactly what we're talking about.
- 47:39Speaker 2: Last segment. We expected that puts Charbonay, who had reconstructive
- 47:43Speaker 2: knee surgery in February, on track to be on the
- 47:45Speaker 2: pupp list to begin the regular season. Only players on
- 47:48Speaker 2: PUFF to begin training camp are eligible to be on
- 47:50Speaker 2: PUFF to begin the regular season. If he's on the
- 47:52Speaker 2: pupp list to begin the season, he'll miss the minimum
- 47:54Speaker 2: of the first four games, and Seahawks are still hoping
- 47:57Speaker 2: he'll come back September October or so. Time line an
- 48:01Speaker 2: NFL and HB announced a're going to move up the
- 48:03Speaker 2: first episode airing day of the Seahawks on training camp
- 48:05Speaker 2: Hard Knocks to August the fourth. They'll have episodes weekly
- 48:09Speaker 2: until September first, eight days before the Seahawks begin their
- 48:12Speaker 2: NFL season against the Patriots. First time in twenty five
- 48:15Speaker 2: years of defending Super Bowl champion has been featured on
- 48:17Speaker 2: Hot Knocks two thousand and one Champion Baltimore Ravens were
- 48:21Speaker 2: the first in the series. The Seahawks sale was supposed
- 48:25Speaker 2: to be approved August of twenty sixth in a team
- 48:28Speaker 2: in a league meeting in Atlanta of NFL team owners.
- 48:32Speaker 2: It's a unique situation selling from an estate. Erwin Kirshner
- 48:37Speaker 2: is the chair of the Corporate Department in Sports Law
- 48:39Speaker 2: Group with Herrick's Law Firm in New York City, and
- 48:43Speaker 2: or Erwin Kishner I sat down with him last week
- 48:45Speaker 2: on the phone to talk to him about the Seahawks
- 48:47Speaker 2: sale and how unique it is and how maybe this
- 48:52Speaker 2: changes the sale valuation of the in the expansion cost
- 48:56Speaker 2: for the Sonics in their return. What is the peculiar
- 49:02Speaker 2: stat what other peculiar stats. The cousin is in a
- 49:05Speaker 2: state that the sks are going to have to go
- 49:07Speaker 2: through now that a normal franchise transaction doesn't.
- 49:10Speaker 11: Well, okay, so that's a multifascinating question, depending on which
- 49:15Speaker 11: way we want to take it. I mean, the question,
- 49:16Speaker 11: I guess from my dvantage is are you talking about
- 49:20Speaker 11: the internal approvals of the Allen estate or are you
- 49:22Speaker 11: talking about the internal approvals of the NFL, because they're both,
- 49:27Speaker 11: if you will involved the necessary in connection with this.
- 49:31Speaker 2: Transaction, yes both please? And is this a lengthy or
- 49:35Speaker 2: is this something that the NFL when you've not even
- 49:36Speaker 2: announced this agreement, if they hadn't already gone down well
- 49:39Speaker 2: down the pike on that.
- 49:41Speaker 12: Oh oh no, this deal is vetted and approved, and
- 49:45Speaker 12: the financing has been looked at, and the ownership group
- 49:49Speaker 12: has been vetted and approved, and.
- 49:52Speaker 11: This deal is you know, there's obviously certain things that
- 49:56Speaker 11: need to happen between now and the ultimate closing, most
- 49:59Speaker 11: prominently the the approval of you know, two thirds or
- 50:02Speaker 11: excuse me, three quarters of the.
- 50:03Speaker 6: Owners But that said, you know this, this is, this
- 50:08Speaker 6: is you know pretty much.
- 50:10Speaker 2: Uh uh.
- 50:11Speaker 11: It would have to be something really terrible coming out
- 50:14Speaker 11: between now and closing for anything to terminate a deal
- 50:18Speaker 11: like that that's this far down the path and it's
- 50:20Speaker 11: been announced.
- 50:21Speaker 2: So what was the complexity layer that the NFL dealt
- 50:24Speaker 2: was to approve a sale out of an estate.
- 50:28Speaker 6: Well, I mean, somebody owns the franchise.
- 50:32Speaker 11: In this case, it happens to be the you know,
- 50:34Speaker 11: the Allen estate. The fact that it's the Allen of
- 50:37Speaker 11: the state means simply the the the NFL is going
- 50:41Speaker 11: to want to make sure that the estate has the
- 50:46Speaker 11: requisite authority to execute a sale and that you know,
- 50:51Speaker 11: from the from a legal advantage, all those boxes have
- 50:54Speaker 11: been checked. It's not any harder that that the asset
- 50:59Speaker 11: owns is owned by an estate visa v you know,
- 51:03Speaker 11: an individual.
- 51:04Speaker 6: You're still going to get the same representations and warranties.
- 51:08Speaker 11: Which would you know, talk about you know, free and clear.
- 51:10Speaker 6: Of leans and encumbrances, you do authority to sell?
- 51:15Speaker 2: Uh that the you know that the.
- 51:17Speaker 11: Franchise has presented is a is a you know, fair
- 51:20Speaker 11: and complete view of what the assets and.
- 51:24Speaker 6: Liabilities look like.
- 51:25Speaker 11: To simplify that, and so I don't think it's any
- 51:28Speaker 11: more complicated from the NFL's advantage.
- 51:31Speaker 6: That's simply because it's in the state.
- 51:34Speaker 11: I mean, clearly the NFL wanted to, uh, you know,
- 51:38Speaker 11: at least in my opinion, was very favored, you know,
- 51:41Speaker 11: to put this into into a individual ownership group, which
- 51:46Speaker 11: is clearly what's happening now.
- 51:49Speaker 2: And of that ownership, of course, we know the statement
- 51:52Speaker 2: from the NFL saying that they would be quote several
- 51:55Speaker 2: minority investors in the size of a deal this big
- 51:59Speaker 2: nine points six billion, would you expect it to be
- 52:03Speaker 2: half dozen? What's a ballpark number of minority I know,
- 52:06Speaker 2: we know the NFL can have up to twenty five
- 52:08Speaker 2: total owners but in a deal like this is, are
- 52:11Speaker 2: we talking about a half dozen or and then what's
- 52:14Speaker 2: the process of lining those up? Has that already done? Yeah?
- 52:18Speaker 11: So, you know, the valuations of franchises to what this
- 52:23Speaker 11: is a deal, have been going so far north and
- 52:28Speaker 11: increasing so so much that it's rather unusual to have
- 52:33Speaker 11: an individual or a family you know, take or acquire the.
- 52:37Speaker 6: Entirety of a franchise.
- 52:39Speaker 11: So accordingly, the NFL, in recognizing that you know, game
- 52:43Speaker 11: up with this thirty percent, the controlling ownership needs to
- 52:45Speaker 11: have thirty thirty percent ownership and the remaining seventy has
- 52:50Speaker 11: to be duly qualified and approved investors. To your exact
- 52:54Speaker 11: questions is to what the number looks like. It really
- 52:58Speaker 11: depends because if you get a well healed investor, call it,
- 53:05Speaker 11: you know, for argument's sake, of a gazillionaire.
- 53:07Speaker 6: And there are a couple of those out there that
- 53:10Speaker 6: you know, could could stroke a check, but there's not
- 53:13Speaker 6: all that many.
- 53:14Speaker 11: You might only have two or three, you know, there
- 53:18Speaker 11: is that ability to get twenty four. But so so
- 53:21Speaker 11: let's just you know, you can do the math if
- 53:24Speaker 11: the owner is going to get thirty percent and that
- 53:26Speaker 11: means seventy percent of nine point six billion. Uh, you know,
- 53:30Speaker 11: it's you know, it's six point three or roughly billion
- 53:33Speaker 11: dollars that you know could be made up of you know,
- 53:36Speaker 11: several hundreds of millions of dollars pieces.
- 53:39Speaker 6: So you know it's it's I don't think there's any.
- 53:42Speaker 11: Hard and fast rules to how many our owners would
- 53:44Speaker 11: be in such a thing, although I would suspect that
- 53:47Speaker 11: this deal, given who the owner is and his connections
- 53:51Speaker 11: around around town, so to speak, that you probably have
- 53:55Speaker 11: you know, fifteen twenty owners that that are participating.
- 54:00Speaker 2: And what did you make of the fact that the
- 54:02Speaker 2: NFL went out of its way to say that NERO
- 54:05Speaker 2: the coast of the wife of Venode, who Venode's been
- 54:09Speaker 2: the front man on this bid the whole time, the
- 54:11Speaker 2: Sun Microsystems co founder and all that. Yet the NFL
- 54:14Speaker 2: said that Nero his wife will be the controlling owner, which,
- 54:18Speaker 2: as you said, thirty percent up to fifty percent of
- 54:21Speaker 2: sometimes like the NFL would like a controlling owner to have.
- 54:24Speaker 2: Do you see from your expertise about why they would
- 54:27Speaker 2: do it that way instead of Venode, the frontman that
- 54:30Speaker 2: everyone is more high profile, would be the controlling owner.
- 54:34Speaker 11: You know, it's hard to fathom what the business reason
- 54:38Speaker 11: is structuring at that, but I rest assured in my
- 54:41Speaker 11: mind anyway there is a strong business reason and it
- 54:44Speaker 11: could it be for a state planning purposes. Could it
- 54:48Speaker 11: be for liability, you know, asset protection purposes. Could it
- 54:52Speaker 11: be for tax structuring, could it be you know, there's
- 54:57Speaker 11: I'm sure or there's some good reason as to why
- 55:02Speaker 11: that's being done. I think it also plays well on
- 55:07Speaker 11: the on the entirety of the transaction, having a female,
- 55:13Speaker 11: you know, controlling owner. I think that that plays well
- 55:16Speaker 11: to the whole picture and the approval. But you know,
- 55:20Speaker 11: what why they did it is, it's hard to you know,
- 55:23Speaker 11: without having inside knowledge, it's hard to fathom or to
- 55:28Speaker 11: just say they just I can assure you that they
- 55:31Speaker 11: did it with some forethought and some strong consideration, and
- 55:37Speaker 11: that that's you know, as far as that's so, as
- 55:39Speaker 11: far as I can tell at this point.
- 55:43Speaker 2: Irwin kissenarda co chair of the Sports Law Group with
- 55:45Speaker 2: the New York law firm Eric joining us on the
- 55:46Speaker 2: Beacon plumbing outline here on ninety three point three kJ.
- 55:49Speaker 4: R F M.
- 55:50Speaker 2: Okay, now there's sir, the process of now divesting their
- 55:53Speaker 2: three point one percent ownership of the San Francisco forty
- 55:57Speaker 2: nine ers at the Coasal family bought in the spring
- 56:00Speaker 2: of twenty twenty five, is that something they will have
- 56:03Speaker 2: already done before they would the league would even announce
- 56:05Speaker 2: this agreement or that will happen before the vote.
- 56:09Speaker 11: Well typically well, as a per requisite of owning an
- 56:14Speaker 11: NFL team, you can't have you know, dual ownership work
- 56:18Speaker 11: or ownership or more than one club for a very
- 56:20Speaker 11: obvious conflict of interest reasons. That said, you know, the
- 56:26Speaker 11: three point one percent stake that the family owns and
- 56:29Speaker 11: the forty nine ers does need to be sold, and
- 56:34Speaker 11: it has to be sold before I would say, you know,
- 56:38Speaker 11: the new season, the NFL season starts, I think is
- 56:42Speaker 11: generally the way this is done. They will have the
- 56:45Speaker 11: deal documented, but you know, to get the requisite approvals
- 56:49Speaker 11: and so forth. It will probably close after the approval.
- 56:53Speaker 11: So the way I see it playing out would be
- 56:55Speaker 11: they have a deal will already in place as to
- 56:58Speaker 11: how who's going to buy that three point one percent,
- 57:02Speaker 11: They have the pricing already largely agreed to, They'll have
- 57:05Speaker 11: that legal document signed and executed, You'll get the approval
- 57:09Speaker 11: of the NFL, and then subsequent to that they'll be
- 57:12Speaker 11: a closing of an actual legal transfer of the interest.
- 57:16Speaker 11: That's that's how I would envision it all playing out.
- 57:20Speaker 11: And that's frankly typical. And and and you know, as
- 57:23Speaker 11: part of this process of you know, being the successful
- 57:27Speaker 11: bidder for the for the Seahawks, this all would have
- 57:31Speaker 11: been orchestrated and mapped out previous to getting the approval,
- 57:37Speaker 11: because the NFL really would would insist as that as
- 57:40Speaker 11: a condition proceeding to the ownership.
- 57:42Speaker 2: Right, sir, is this is more of your opinion rather
- 57:47Speaker 2: than you knowing the facts of the case. But in fact,
- 57:50Speaker 2: the fact they own three point one percent of the
- 57:51Speaker 2: forty nine ers, Did that not just grease the skids
- 57:54Speaker 2: to be able to sell or buy an entire franchise
- 57:57Speaker 2: because now they know the NFL selling process, the approval process,
- 58:00Speaker 2: They know all the fellow team owners that had to
- 58:02Speaker 2: approve them to be minority stakeholders, the forty nine ers,
- 58:04Speaker 2: they know Roger Goodell from that process. How much of
- 58:07Speaker 2: a head start did the Kosla family have over any
- 58:10Speaker 2: other bid or just because the fact they've already gone
- 58:12Speaker 2: through an approval process.
- 58:14Speaker 11: Yeah, and I would even say this is even well,
- 58:17Speaker 11: I appreciate your classifying it as an opinion. I would
- 58:20Speaker 11: say it would even go a little further as more
- 58:22Speaker 11: towards the factual continuum than opinion.
- 58:26Speaker 6: Having a prior ownership in one.
- 58:28Speaker 11: Of the league's teams absolutely helps the ownership process because
- 58:34Speaker 11: that means the family and the owners were previously vetted.
- 58:38Speaker 11: You can't own even a minority stake without getting vetted
- 58:42Speaker 11: and approved by the league.
- 58:43Speaker 6: So the fact is that this ownership group was was
- 58:46Speaker 6: vetted and approved, and you know the fact that they
- 58:50Speaker 6: know the faces in the room absolutely helps helps that process.
- 58:56Speaker 11: That said, you know, money, at the end of the
- 58:59Speaker 11: day speaks, and I don't think that, you know, given
- 59:03Speaker 11: the fact that they had prior ownership, if they put
- 59:06Speaker 11: just making you know, numbers up a nine point two
- 59:10Speaker 11: billion offer in the higher the next guy had a
- 59:12Speaker 11: nine point three billion dollar offer and it was you know,
- 59:16Speaker 11: solid financing with a on premium facia or on the
- 59:20Speaker 11: face of it looked like an ownership grouplet that was
- 59:23Speaker 11: you know, suitable for the NFL. Ownership that would have
- 59:27Speaker 11: done that would have prevailed. So it helps, but it's
- 59:30Speaker 11: not the only.
- 59:30Speaker 2: Thing, right And my final question, sir, is what do
- 59:34Speaker 2: you think the future now is for franchise valuations? Not
- 59:37Speaker 2: just in the NFL, which prints money as we know
- 59:39Speaker 2: in the revenue skyrocket metia rites, but what might this
- 59:43Speaker 2: do for the Seattle expansion team in the NBA, or
- 59:46Speaker 2: Las Vegas or other franchise around North American sports way
- 59:49Speaker 2: as we know it? Just the Seahawks sale comes just
- 59:52Speaker 2: under the ten billion dollar record Los Angeles Lakers sale
- 59:55Speaker 2: last year. But does this now rise all boats the
- 59:58Speaker 2: tide that the Seahawks sales? Right?
- 1:00:00Speaker 11: You know, so there's you know, there's two there's there's
- 1:00:04Speaker 11: an answer to that, and the answer, this simple answer
- 1:00:06Speaker 11: is yes, Uh, professional owner or ownership of professional sports
- 1:00:11Speaker 11: teams and the ownership of franchises, by and large and
- 1:00:15Speaker 11: very general sense is going to continue to the evaluations
- 1:00:18Speaker 11: are going to continue to rise. There are two main
- 1:00:22Speaker 11: reasons for that, or two main drivers.
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:00:25Speaker 11: And perhaps you might put another half in front of
- 1:00:29Speaker 11: that too, But let me explain.
- 1:00:30Speaker 6: Number one.
- 1:00:31Speaker 11: You have the legalization of wagering in the United States, UH,
- 1:00:35Speaker 11: and that you know prevreates tremendous interest. The NFL is
- 1:00:39Speaker 11: no secret.
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:00:40Speaker 11: People vote on you know, all kinds of prop bets
- 1:00:43Speaker 11: and and ownership and I don't sure, and on who's
- 1:00:46Speaker 11: gonna win, if they're gonna what the score is going
- 1:00:48Speaker 11: to be, who's gonna win the coin coin flip, and
- 1:00:51Speaker 11: so forth. So that's driver number one. Driver number two
- 1:00:55Speaker 11: is with the streaming and the all the availability of
- 1:01:00Speaker 11: what the programming that's that's available to attract eyeballs. Live
- 1:01:06Speaker 11: sports is and will continue and will remain to be
- 1:01:09Speaker 11: the one that you know, if you will and quotes
- 1:01:11Speaker 11: must see TV something you really want to see live
- 1:01:15Speaker 11: as opposed to I'll stream it.
- 1:01:17Speaker 6: Later in the afternoon. And that is you know, garnering
- 1:01:21Speaker 6: many many more eyeballs. So for competitive leagues, you have
- 1:01:25Speaker 6: those drivers. I said, there'd be.
- 1:01:27Speaker 11: A point another potential driver, and that is you know,
- 1:01:32Speaker 11: there is and there are tax benefits to owning a
- 1:01:37Speaker 11: franchise largely, and I'm not a tax expert, but I
- 1:01:43Speaker 11: can tell you in general brushstrokes broadbrushstrokes. You know, owning
- 1:01:47Speaker 11: a team and paying a lot of money for it
- 1:01:50Speaker 11: provides an opportunity to, if you will, depreciate the asset
- 1:01:55Speaker 11: on a somewhat accelerated basis. So if somebody has in
- 1:02:00Speaker 11: their portfolio large gains that they could otherwise realize.
- 1:02:05Speaker 6: And they have to pay tax, you could use this
- 1:02:07Speaker 6: to upset some of that.
- 1:02:09Speaker 11: And so that's another if you will, a benefit to
- 1:02:12Speaker 11: ownership of a professional sports franchise. All that being said,
- 1:02:17Speaker 11: the economics have to make sense. People are not just
- 1:02:20Speaker 11: paying lots of money for professional sports franchise. They're paying
- 1:02:24Speaker 11: a lot of money for it because it's worth it.
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: And the laws of.
- 1:02:27Speaker 6: Supply and demand and economics talk to you.
- 1:02:31Speaker 11: Know, raising the price as time goes on. So I
- 1:02:34Speaker 11: definitely predict as time goes forward. You know, there's nine
- 1:02:38Speaker 11: point six billion dollars sale for the for the Seahawks,
- 1:02:42Speaker 11: we'll see it eclipsed in due time, and it's going
- 1:02:45Speaker 11: to be you know, buckley a seatbelt.
- 1:02:47Speaker 6: It's be a fun rise.
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: Irwin Kishner, co chair of the Sports Law Group for
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: the New York law firm. Eric, thank you for your
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: time and your expertise. Sir, have a great summer. I
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: appreciate you talking to us.
- 1:02:59Speaker 6: It's been a fantast think being here. Good luck and
- 1:03:01Speaker 6: pleasure speaking with you.
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: What's interesting there is Erwin Kishner who knows about sports
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: law and sales and franchise sales and sales from the States.
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: The interesting part of that to me is him saying
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: there could be as many as fifteen or twenty minority
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: co investors in the Seahawks.
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: I love that part.
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that could be a varied people. That could be local,
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: That could be people who have owned franchises before, been
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: investing in sports teams before. It could be people that
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: have no experience into that could be more women beyond
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: Dende Coachla's wife, who's the controlling owner the.
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: NFL sies Nero is the head honcho.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: The principal owner. But they can have as many as twenty,
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: well in this case, twenty two co investors because of
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: the wife, the husband and the Sun being the primary
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: buyers of the team, but the NFL rules allow up
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: to twenty five total investors in a franchise.
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: Well, remember Greg, you and I were having this conversation
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: about you know, we were hearing some rumblings about low
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: Well that's not excluded with this sale, correct, That's why
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: I like that.
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: And he himself said, if you've got some giant billionaire
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: to invest, maybe there's only two or three minority investor.
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: We still don't know the identity dentities of all the investors.
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: The NFL, in their memo to teams alerting them to
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: the sale and the need for a vote August twenty six,
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: said there will be several quote several co minority investors
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: in the Seahawks, which doesn't exactly him if you believe
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: the letter of the word. The definition of several doesn't
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: mean they're gonna be twenty two of them. But Irwin
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: Kushner said, because of you know, Kosla's connections in this case,
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: he thinking and meaning in Sun Microsystems and AI and
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: the Bay Area, they could have as many as fifteen
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: or twenty minority investors of the Seahawks. That and of
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: itself is not unusual in pro sports either to have
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: that many co and minority investors. I mean, Hector Mariners
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: have all kinds of investors, a couple dozen that are
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: not you know, some are very small, and so the Road.
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: The Sounders have m maclamore and other people investing in
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: them as well.
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: So John Rydan down with the Portland Pickles.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: The Portland Pickles and John Ryan and Sarah Corona exactly.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: So we'll see what the it should come out by
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: around the sale approval vote on August twenty sixth, that's
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: at the NFL meeting in Atlanta. Up next. We got
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: a lot of nice, interesting text about the Mariners and
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: their approach. They're fifty four percent whether they're true motivations,
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: we'll be back through text. Any talkbacks, go to the
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app the red talkback microphone or to nine through
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: three KGr dot com as a red microphone at the top,
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: leave a thirty second or shorter voicemail message and Jessman
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: will play that back. Your chance to be a part
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: of the show is coming up next from Jimmy's on
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: First across the street from T Mobile Park. When the
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: Mariners and Reds are about to play we'll be back
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: next to ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 1:06:07Speaker 13: Either're grebving, Jessman, You're damn right, Greg. There's more than
- 1:06:10Speaker 13: meet cie there. It's crap like last night, and it's
- 1:06:14Speaker 13: been going on all season. I don't care who's to
- 1:06:17Speaker 13: blame for these managerial decisions when you're punting on the game,
- 1:06:23Speaker 13: when you're down by one run in the top of
- 1:06:25Speaker 13: the f and nins because you got a game tomorrow. Oh,
- 1:06:29Speaker 13: we could still win the series. Dude.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: This is why I didn't go to the game last night.
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: I'm tired of this crap. Go Hawks.
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: I do appreciate the self editing.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: Yeah, some restraint there.
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: I do understand the frustration, though.
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: I get it. Fifty years man, it's fifty years without
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: a World Series. I get it. I totally get it.
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: The window is wide open right now for this team,
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: and every game they give away, you're just like, they
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: should have won that one. They should have won that one.
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: Oh.
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: I think it hurts more when they say it out loud.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: By the way the Mariners today their lineup, Cole Young
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: is back at the number one spot. He moved there
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: on Monday to leadoff from sixth. We talked about that
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: a couple weeks ago. I mean, where would they be
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: without Cole Young. Offensively, they moved him to the top
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: of the line and he went oh for five as
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: the leadoff guy last night. Number two today is the
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: DH Julia Rodriguez not playing the field, but after missing
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: one game, he came back yesterday as a pinch hitter,
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: hit her home run late in the game after stayed
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: in the game and playing center field. Not in the
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: field today, but playing as a designated hitter, batting second,
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: canzone and right field, batting third or rosary and left
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: betting fourth. Then Naylor's at first base roleby the catcher
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: betting sixth, Bluke Brayley, he is at center field. He's
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: going to bet seventh. I'm gonna have a Weston Wilson
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: played third base, bat eights and then Cold Emerson short
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: stop betting ninth. Emerson Hancock will throw the first pitch
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: at twelve forty, right across the street from me. You
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: know what the music is the time for you guys
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: be a part in gals, to be a part of
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: the show. And the text line four nine four or
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: five to one. The Tacoma Dodge text line I wanted
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: to read run right off the top. That got my
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: attention because a lot of people think this. I can
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: find this three six oh. The problem is that the
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: grand plan is to win fifty four percent. Those faded,
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: ill fated words that Jerry to Poto said, the comers overwhelm.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: The grand plan is to win fifty four percent, to
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: be competitive, which means a fifty to fifty percent chance
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: of winning, and to put butts in the seats on
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: bubblehead knights. The grand plan is not a one hundred
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: percent commitment to winning a World series. That from the
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: three six to oh, and you understand the sentiment there.
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: As I said, fifty years without winning a World Series,
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: the only sports professional sports franchise in North America to
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: not win or even appeer in a championship series for
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: its league. And yet last night, thirty five thousand plus
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: on a Tuesday night, it was ninety degrees in Seattle
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: on a two Esday night in July, sell out Friday
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: for Fireworks Night, a sellout again on Saturday when they
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: were playing a woeful Giants team. Thirty five thousand plus
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: again on Sunday. I mean they're averaging more than thirty
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: five thousand per game for this team that is at
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: five hundred.
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: It's been rocking down there.
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: It has I thought that maybe the World Cup and
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: people visiting, why don't you do both?
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: But no, I was there last night.
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: It was packed two six is greg? How would the
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: NFL feel about a college forty team super league, which
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: we may be getting to. Will they still think of
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: that as a feeder system or is that edging into competition? Well,
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: I would suggest that for the lower ends of rosters,
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: we're already in competition between college and NFL football because
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: there are players that are staying in college for a
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: sixth year because they're getting nil deals of two or
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: three million dollars, which is three four five x larger
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: than their rookie contract's going to be, right, The minimum
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: salary in the NFL now is seven hundred and forty
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: thousand if you make the team, even an undrafted rookie.
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: All that, but the minimum salary is seven hundred and
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: forty thousand. If you're getting a two or three million
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: dollar nil deal from University of X, you're gonna play
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: for University of X, right unless you're a bona FID
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: first or second round third round draft pick. Yeah, why
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: not stay? I'd say the competition is already here. But
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: to the point the first part of the text, a
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: super league's coming. The big ten in the SEC are
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: gonna secede basically from the NCAA, make their own rules
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: to benefit them, have their own playoff, determine their own
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: national champion, and it's gonna be an arms race of
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: nil and transfer portal and all that. There are college
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: presidents who are praying that the Congress steps in before this,
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: but so far they can't even agree on a bipartisan
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: deal on a bipartisan law to change college sports and
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: fix NIO and the transfer portal. Now Senator Tommy Tubberville,
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: the former Arburne coach, is coming out saying, let's scale
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: down the bipartisan bill and make it just toward transfersident nil.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: Let's just make a five year carte blanche five years
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: to play five seasons in college football, for instance. But
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: the super league's coming. If they don't preempt it with
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: some Congress legislating something different, they are on track to
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: have the haves be the big ten in the SEC,
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: and the have not to be everybody else. Yeah, and
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: the rules be separate from both of them.
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: My theory has always been that they're going to do
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: the super leagues and it's going to get divided up
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: geographically eventually, and we're going to end up with what we.
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: Already had in the first place.
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: And yeah, just.
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: Realize that the NCAA could have been a little more
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: proactive than reactive.
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a legal strategy on the college president's part. Remember,
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: the NCAA is not just some building that makes laws.
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: The rules of the college sports is made by college presidents.
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: All the rules are made by college presidents. The NCAA
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: is a consort of those presidents who vote on every
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: policy the NCAA has, And the NCAA college presidents decided
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: that they did not want to be sued for anything
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: post the Bannon at Obanon case and all of the
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: rulings that came out of that. So for name, image
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: and likeness and transfer portal, hands off, we're not doing
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: anything so that we don't get sued. And now we
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: got this no guardrails, no rules. Back to the Mariners
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: two oh six. I don't understand why we have six
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: quality starters on the bench and we have these crappy
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: relievers put in the starter who's not going to pitch
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: again for another five days. That would be an unconventional
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: way to handle it. More to the point, the six
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: starters mean you have one fewer reliever. And the Major
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: League Baseball rolls on a twenty six man roster set
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: they changed a couple of years ago. You can't have
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: any more than thirteen pitchers period. The Mariners are choosing
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: to go with six starters, so that limits you to
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: one fewer bullpen arm. If you guy have one or
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: two triple A guys in your bullpen, as the Mariners
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: do Davielo, who's been better than Rucker and Rucker, you
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: really only have four potentially high leverage starters in the
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: Mariners case. And then you throw on top of that
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: all the rules they have and when they can use
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: these guys and they can't start a new inning and
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: they can't pitch on consecutive days and blah blah blah.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: Then you get situations like last night, although Rutger was
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: pitching on consecutive days, but that on top of Matt
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: Brass still being on the injured list, on top of
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: Carlos Vargas never repairing yet this season. M that's where
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: the situation they're in the six man rotation, limiting their
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: bullpen and two of the bullpen guys being triple A guys,
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: and you in the situation that they're in two manners,
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: are on the knife's edge to losing my interest. Seahawks
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: are just around the quartererbit. How many summers have we
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: heard that here? I don't know, justin I don't think
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: this summer's like that, though, do you?
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: I don't, actually.
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: I think everyone is just so satisfied with what the
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: Seahawks did last year that their clamor for more from
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: the Mariners, and I think that's where a lot of
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: the frustration comes from.
- 1:14:05Speaker 4: But I don't feel like, just get me to football
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: season this year.
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: I think, especially because of the excitement we had towards
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: the end of the Mariners season last year, that we
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: want more. And that is also why we're seeing the
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: passion from people, because we want that and more.
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: Absolutely, we got within eight outs of a World Series
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: here last last fall. No, No, they have basically the
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: same team coming back. Yeah, they exactly.
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: I mean I went home to my husband at one
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: o'clock in the morning two nights in a row, smelling
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: like champagne and cigars and had to tell him, I
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: swear to god, I did not have a drink and
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: I did not smoke a cigar.
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: It was great.
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: They clinched a.
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: Playoff spot one night, then they clinched the aos the
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: next night. And I had never seen a happier place
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: when I've been in a clubhouse or a locker room.
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: And there is there are lines forming down Occidental to
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: cross the street to get into the left field gate.
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: There's lines up in down Royal Brown. Who lines up
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: and down First Avenue South Here at Jimmy's on First
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: for a day game on a Wednesday in July.
- 1:15:06Speaker 4: It's a hot ticket and it's I mean.
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: A ninety degree day. It's a middling Reds team that
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: they're playing, and they're still gonna have thirty five thousand
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: in here.
- 1:15:14Speaker 4: Today and they still have tickets available.
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: I was looking it up out of curiosity to see
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: there's some affordable tickets out there.
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: If you just wanted to take a ride down, come
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: on down if.
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: You want to blow off the afternoon of work.
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: We're just hanging out with Greg at Jimmy's with me exactly.
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: I'll be out of here and a half hour and
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: go across the street into the stadium. Beautiful four to
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: five Joel here. Three things from Joel. One Dan Wilson
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: couldn't manage a little league team. Two to Poto can't
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: find hitters period. And three Army in the Under much love,
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: thanks Joel. Thanks for making me laugh.
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: Love that, Joel.
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll be doing We'll be doing Army in the
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: Under quite a bit again.
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: This fault December twelfth, Greg and I will be there.
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll do our in our weekly kicks on our show.
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: We'll definitely Army in the Under will be on more
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: in a few times that were pretty well for me
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: a couple of seasons ago, twenty some wins on that year.
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: Speaking of Army football. By the way, the there was
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: a West Point classmate of mine, Paul Webb, from Western
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: New York. They went and visited last week before I
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: went and saw my mom in Detroit. He sent me
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: this stat yesterday that in the American Athletic Association that
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: Army plays in, they had a list of all the
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: transfer transactions in the football programs of that conference since
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: last year. Memphis, where my buddy doctor Reed Scott is
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: the athletic director. Memphis had eighty eight transfer comings and
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: goings since last the end of last season in college.
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: On the college, the rosters some one hundred and four
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: or one hundred five, it can be any there's not
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: a roster women anymore, but generally he's one hundred some players.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: Eighty eight transfers leaving and coming. How many? You know
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: how many? Army had zero. Zero Again for the one
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: and eightieth consecutives year of Army football, we had zero.
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: It's a dedication.
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: They don't do the NIO game. They don't bring in
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: people to start over from their freshman year because you
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: can't bring in if you transfer into West Point, you
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: got to start at day one as a plead year
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: zero and graduate on a four year program. They don't
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: make exceptions for that. And once you get into the
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: service academy, you're trying to graduate become an officer in antenate.
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: So yeah, Army zero. Even Navy had two, they were
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: two departures, but zero, Memphis eighty. I'm gonna send that
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: note to my buddy, doctor Ed Scott.
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: And it is quite the stat It is quite the stat.
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: For two five three, we talked about Zach Sharmoney going
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: on the physically enable to perform list this morning for
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: the Seahawk No surprise there makes him eligible if he
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: needs to stay on that list throughout the preseason to
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: be on the publish to begin the regular season, that
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: would miss mean he would miss the first four games.
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: No one expected him to be back at the beginning
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: of the season from the reconstructiveknee surgeon February. But the
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: two POY three ask what is Tory Horton's status. Well,
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: we're gonna find that out the next couple days. As
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: the veterans continue to report to Seahawk training camp I
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: mentioned earlier in the show, they then take physicals. If
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: they don't pass those physicals, they go on some kind
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: of injury list. I expect Tory Horton to be on
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: the pup list too. He was not practicing during OTA's
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: or mini camp. If he's not ready to practice, he'll
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: probably be on the pup list to be in camp
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: as well. Member Again, as in the Nickema Warri case,
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: players on the pup list to begin training camp can
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: come back to practice. Can we be on the practice
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: field in camp as soon as they passed their physical
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: I'm Next, I finess the Mayor and Maple Valley. I
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: believe he's in the studio with Jessamin up to Tellia Bay.
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: We'll see what a EN's got on the show. Next,
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: I'm live at Jimmy's on First. It's filling up a
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: T Mobile Park for the Mariners in red starting this
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: afternoon ninety three point three KJRFM. Welcome back to the show,
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: Drake Bell, Jasmin McIntire with you every weekday ten Amvenoon.
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: I met Jimmy's on First, right across the street from
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: the left field gate of T Mobile Park, where the
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: Mariners and Reds played the third and final game of
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: their series. In the final game of the Mariners homestand
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: day game mat and a ball at the yard. Mariners
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: half game out of first place in the Al West,
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: heading after this game to Texas to play the Rangers,
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: the first place Rangers for three in Arlington. Jimmy's' is packed.
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: I'm just still kind of surprised not to mention the
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: big crowd forming outside the left field gate. A couple
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: other things I didn't mentioned so far in the show
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: I was gonna bring up at the end when he
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: joins us down in Portland. The other team that the
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: Paul G. Allen Trust and Jody Allen sold to this year,
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: this past year, last spring actually was Tom Dundon for
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: four billion dollars. He bought the NBA's Portland Trailblazers. Well,
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: Dundon is not making friends in Portland now after seventy
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: layoffs of front off of staff. He's cutting the Blazers
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: broadcasting team. He's cutting long time TV analyst Michael Holton,
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: statistician Tom Haberstow, Neil Everett, the former ESPN anchor who
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: was a part time host of the Blazers pregame postgame shows,
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: Jamie Hudson. They're all depart in the Blazers broadcast team.
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: There's talk of deep pay cuts or non renewed contracts
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: in the future of play by play announcer Kevin Collabor.
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: The institution is also uncertain. That's what Tom done and
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: is doing. On top of all he's already done in
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: Portland with the Blazers. The other thing I wanted to
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: bring up is yesterday I was on Paul Sylvie and
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: Chris Egan's show on King five, The Ultimate Sports Podcast
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: on King five and CONGTV and KINGFI Sports dot Com.
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: And they asked me about the new ownership and what
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: I expected them maybe to do one of the first
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: moves they make and changes they make, and I told
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: him that the owners want to really make a positive
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: impression on veteran players such as Julian Love. They all
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: installed real grass in Loomenfield and don't tell me it
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: can't be done in the winter because it rains here.
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: It absolutely can be done. And if he wanted to
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: be friends with his players, new owner benode Kozla and
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: his family could invest. It just takes money. They do
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: it in Pittsburgh, they do it in Cincinnati, excuse me,
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: in Cleveland. They do it in Chicago. They do it
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: in Green Bay with an elaborate warming system under a
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: grass food in Green Bay, which is a frozen tundra.
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: It's possible. It just takes ownership money and fornessa Maria
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: and Maple Valley is on from the Lat Bay studios
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: back up the street.
- 1:21:26Speaker 10: Hello, sir, it's not gonna happen.
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: Greg Wells going, but it's not.
- 1:21:31Speaker 10: I don't think it's just the money. It's just it's
- 1:21:32Speaker 10: the stadium, you know, I mean, they it's You've got
- 1:21:35Speaker 10: an mls team an NWSL team, unless that changes. If so,
- 1:21:40Speaker 10: eventually the Sounders are talking about concerts, all the other
- 1:21:46Speaker 10: events concerts in Pittsburgh.
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: I know they do.
- 1:21:48Speaker 10: But I'm telling you, Greg, I did. I did a
- 1:21:51Speaker 10: whole bunch of this research the other day with a
- 1:21:53Speaker 10: guy that actually does turf, and hopefully I might have
- 1:21:55Speaker 10: the information the next not today or tomorrow, but hopefully
- 1:21:57Speaker 10: but early next week. It is that's stadium is used
- 1:22:01Speaker 10: so much that it would be it's just not. It
- 1:22:04Speaker 10: just doesn't pencil out.
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: Well, that's a chicken and egg thing. The stadium's use
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: so much because it doesn't have a grass field, that's why.
- 1:22:10Speaker 10: But you're not but you're talking about at some point,
- 1:22:12Speaker 10: because at some point you're probably talking about, Okay, we're
- 1:22:14Speaker 10: gonna have ten NFL games there and maybe that's it.
- 1:22:17Speaker 10: Maybe one concert in the summer, then we replace the turf.
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: Pittsburgh has like half a dozen concerts in the summer
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: pit plan that they have.
- 1:22:25Speaker 10: Right, I'm just I'm just telling you that I'm.
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: Going to spend billions of dollars to the Roody family
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: spends money to replace that field two or three times
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: a year.
- 1:22:33Speaker 10: But the Seahawks don't own the stadium, correct, They so,
- 1:22:38Speaker 10: so it would have to be. It's almost you were
- 1:22:40Speaker 10: talking about Portland. It's almost like we were talking about
- 1:22:42Speaker 10: with Portland, like who's really going to pay for it? Like,
- 1:22:45Speaker 10: who's really going to pay for it? That's the question. Well, right,
- 1:22:48Speaker 10: And I'm gonna push back on something else too. I'm
- 1:22:52Speaker 10: there are a handful of players that want to say
- 1:22:54Speaker 10: that we want to have grass and only grass. There's
- 1:22:56Speaker 10: other guys that will tell you no because and you
- 1:22:59Speaker 10: know who usually is lineman. They don't like it, and
- 1:23:04Speaker 10: because you've got to try to anchor on hell. I
- 1:23:06Speaker 10: can remember going when Charlotte had the natural grass, which,
- 1:23:09Speaker 10: by the way, they switched back right to turf now yep, right,
- 1:23:12Speaker 10: And I remember sitting there on We're doing a I know,
- 1:23:15Speaker 10: got five hour pregame show for that playoff game, and
- 1:23:18Speaker 10: guys are coming off and they're losing their mind because
- 1:23:21Speaker 10: of how bad the grass was like and it's like
- 1:23:23Speaker 10: barely grass. It's like slicker around. Green Bay is not
- 1:23:26Speaker 10: a great turf field, even with all the warming and stuff.
- 1:23:29Speaker 10: I've been on it. I've talked to guys. It's not great.
- 1:23:31Speaker 10: Like I think there's guys I think if you really
- 1:23:34Speaker 10: pulled like an actual, like a not a public poll,
- 1:23:38Speaker 10: but just like let's do an anonymous poll across the league.
- 1:23:40Speaker 10: I bet it would be closer than you think. With field, turf,
- 1:23:43Speaker 10: no field, I bet it'd be fifty to fifty.
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: Yeah. But my point is there are a lot of
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: players who just want to do it for their long
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: term help their flags, they're all and you're right, there
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: are anchor guys on the line of scrimmage who don't
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: want to do that right there. I will also tell
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: you anecdotally there are guys, including that play for the Rams,
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: who hate SOFI stadiums turf.
- 1:24:02Speaker 10: Yeah, well, and that's that's the other problem is not
- 1:24:04Speaker 10: all turf has created the same much like not all
- 1:24:05Speaker 10: grasses created the same. Hell remember the first what six years,
- 1:24:09Speaker 10: seven years, we're going to Levi Stadium and how bad
- 1:24:12Speaker 10: that was and how guys hated it. Guys hated it.
- 1:24:15Speaker 10: So you know how they you know how those guys
- 1:24:17Speaker 10: make make a good impression status flipping quote right, you
- 1:24:23Speaker 10: don't mess with and business wise.
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: Well true, but how realistic is it that they're going
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: to spend six billion dollars and not change the thing.
- 1:24:31Speaker 10: Well, that's the thing. I mean, I guess if you're
- 1:24:32Speaker 10: Chuck Harlan, you're looking over your shoulder right and you
- 1:24:34Speaker 10: know Amy Sprangers and and the rest of the group
- 1:24:37Speaker 10: on the business side. But I think all you have
- 1:24:38Speaker 10: to do is look at the bottom line and say,
- 1:24:40Speaker 10: God that these guys kind of know what they're.
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: Doing right wise.
- 1:24:45Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, I think that. Now, remember the last not
- 1:24:48Speaker 10: before Paul Island, the last big big sale, the ken
- 1:24:51Speaker 10: Barring sale.
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: What did they do?
- 1:24:52Speaker 10: They came in immediately change the football side, Chuck Knox out,
- 1:24:55Speaker 10: Mike McCormick out, bringing these guys. So it's not it
- 1:24:59Speaker 10: is so different. It's the defending Super Bowl champions. This
- 1:25:02Speaker 10: is so different than others.
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: It's unprecedent.
- 1:25:04Speaker 10: Yeah right, it's so different.
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: So what do you What do you got going to?
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:25:08Speaker 10: You just get a party down there all day and
- 1:25:09Speaker 10: got it sounds like a massive b there's as.
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: Many people's in here for the World Cup. Maybe officers
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: walking in.
- 1:25:15Speaker 10: Oh right now, are you okay? Are you okay with that?
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: No? I don't think so. I think so.
- 1:25:21Speaker 10: Corbus Smith joining us twelve twenty. We got Dwight James.
- 1:25:24Speaker 10: You're talking about Portland coming up at one o'clock. What
- 1:25:25Speaker 10: an absolute nightmare collabor You're gonna touch him? Well, a
- 1:25:30Speaker 10: lot of people get be touched. We'll talk and also
- 1:25:32Speaker 10: does it affect the sonic situation?
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: Dude?
- 1:25:34Speaker 10: And at two o'clock Stu Mandel talking college football.
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: So Busy Show and for NASA is up next for
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: the next three hours with Anderson Hurst, Jess and McIntyre
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: and I will join you again tomorrow. I'll be back
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: in the studios. The other day. I'm going across the
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: street to see the Mariners in reds from Jimmy's on
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: First Appreciate You listening. Ann's up next on ninety three
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: point three and KJRFM
