- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, Welcome to the Inside the Birds super Bowl
- 0:13Speaker 1: pre preview. It's Jeff Mosher and I promised everybody in
- 0:19Speaker 1: the last show that I did that I wasn't gonna
- 0:21Speaker 1: go an entire two weeks before talking about the Super
- 0:24Speaker 1: Bowl matchup. I wasn't gonna wait until the Saturday before
- 0:29Speaker 1: to drop my preview show. So I'll give you some
- 0:32Speaker 1: initial thoughts on this matchup between the New England Patriots
- 0:37Speaker 1: and the Seattle Seahawks, and then the following Saturday, I'll
- 0:41Speaker 1: probably have my final preview of the game. Just give
- 0:45Speaker 1: you some early thoughts on the matchup and some other
- 0:48Speaker 1: things going on around the NFL league. With lots lots
- 0:53Speaker 1: of movement, just so much movement, head coach movement, offensive
- 0:56Speaker 1: coordinator movement, defensive coordinator movement, position coach movement. I cannot
- 1:02Speaker 1: remember a single off season with this much movement, but
- 1:06Speaker 1: you're gonna you'll have that when you have ten head
- 1:08Speaker 1: coaching changes. Obviously head coaches bring in their own people,
- 1:12Speaker 1: then you get executive changes. The one in Minnesota not
- 1:15Speaker 1: shocking if you'd known what was going on, but shocking
- 1:20Speaker 1: of the timing of it that they fire their GM.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I believe quasi. Adolph Mensa is from Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
- 1:27Speaker 1: By the way, I'm not mistaken a local guy there.
- 1:31Speaker 1: So really just interesting stuff going around the league right now,
- 1:36Speaker 1: and that's causing a lot of movement, and it's caused
- 1:39Speaker 1: a lot of uncertainty, and teams are still trying to
- 1:42Speaker 1: build up themselves and get ready while you still have
- 1:45Speaker 1: the Super Bowl going on. So it's very fascinating time
- 1:48Speaker 1: in the league if you're into that stuff, that movement,
- 1:51Speaker 1: that tracking, that not only what it means for individuals,
- 1:56Speaker 1: but what it means for a franchise like the Eagles.
- 2:00Speaker 1: They get themselves a new offensive coordinator in Sean Manion,
- 2:04Speaker 1: who is completely cuts against the grain, we think because
- 2:08Speaker 1: he's never been a play caller or an offensive coordinator
- 2:11Speaker 1: and only a coach in the NFL for a few years.
- 2:15Speaker 1: You know, we can only guess and think what kind
- 2:18Speaker 1: of concepts and scheme he's going to bring to the Eagles,
- 2:22Speaker 1: But we really don't know. We're just going off of
- 2:25Speaker 1: his background. But if what we think he's going to
- 2:30Speaker 1: bring to the Eagles is true, which is a lot
- 2:32Speaker 1: of that McVeigh style of offense, a lot of under center,
- 2:38Speaker 1: a lot of play action. That's stuff that the Eagles
- 2:41Speaker 1: haven't been doing at all. I mean, they dabbled in
- 2:43Speaker 1: it last year with mixed results for the first time,
- 2:46Speaker 1: but for the most part, that's not really their identity
- 2:49Speaker 1: of an offense. And so that's why a lot of
- 2:52Speaker 1: these head coaching changes and coordinator changes, it's not just
- 2:55Speaker 1: about the guy calling the play, but it's about that
- 3:02Speaker 1: what kind of impact that's going to have on the
- 3:04Speaker 1: team altogether. So it's really fascinating, and you know it's
- 3:08Speaker 1: still going on. If you read my colleague at the
- 3:12Speaker 1: time of me recording this, my colleague at Philly Voice,
- 3:14Speaker 1: Jimmie Kenski, had a big scoop on Philly Voice that
- 3:18Speaker 1: Vic Fangio had considered retirement and the Eagles had considered
- 3:23Speaker 1: replacements for fans. You already with Jonathan Gannon and Jim Schwartz,
- 3:29Speaker 1: you know, two guys who've been in the building before
- 3:31Speaker 1: in that job. So that's how serious it has been
- 3:35Speaker 1: getting for the Eagles. And it sounds like they're expecting
- 3:37Speaker 1: him back, but you just you just never know. So
- 3:40Speaker 1: we'll see. It would not surprise me if he came back,
- 3:42Speaker 1: but then I think his contract runs through next year.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Wouldn't surprise me if next year was his last year,
- 3:48Speaker 1: and then the likeliest successor I would think would be
- 3:52Speaker 1: Joe Casper, who just got promoted to pass game and
- 3:56Speaker 1: defensive backs coach pass game coordinator. He was a safety's coach.
- 3:59Speaker 1: He is Vic's kind of right hand man. He was
- 4:03Speaker 1: here in Philadelphia, then he went with VIC to Miami
- 4:06Speaker 1: when Vic became a defensive coordinator there. Despite the fact
- 4:10Speaker 1: that they did not have a coaching connection. VIC had
- 4:12Speaker 1: just been hanging around the Eagles, as we know in
- 4:14Speaker 1: twenty twenty two and really took a liking to Joe Casper,
- 4:18Speaker 1: brought him to Miami, then brought him back to Philly,
- 4:21Speaker 1: and he'll probably be the next defensive coordinator if VIC
- 4:25Speaker 1: retires and the franchise isn't blown to bits. I mean,
- 4:27Speaker 1: you never know what the Eagles if they have a
- 4:29Speaker 1: bad year, they could just completely clean house. So a
- 4:33Speaker 1: lot remains to be seen there with the Philadelphia Eagles,
- 4:36Speaker 1: but that is the plan, and there's a lot of
- 4:38Speaker 1: movement going on in the NFL. I'll get to that
- 4:40Speaker 1: a little bit more in this show, but I wanted
- 4:43Speaker 1: to give you some really some things that fascinate me
- 4:47Speaker 1: about this Super Bowl between the Patriots and the Seahawks.
- 4:54Speaker 1: What's interesting is sort of that they met, you know,
- 4:57Speaker 1: not too long ago in the Super Bowl that was
- 5:01Speaker 1: the legion of Boom Seahawks and of course the Peyton
- 5:05Speaker 1: Manning I'm sorry, not Tom Brady Patriots, legion of Boom Seahawks.
- 5:11Speaker 1: We all know that. You know, the Seattle was trying
- 5:13Speaker 1: to win their second straight Super Bowl that year. They
- 5:16Speaker 1: fell short. There was the interception at the goal line,
- 5:19Speaker 1: Russell Wilson, Malcolm Butler, why didn't you run the ball
- 5:22Speaker 1: Pete Carroll with you know, your huge and unbelievable running
- 5:27Speaker 1: back at the time, Marshawn Lynch. I mean that that's
- 5:31Speaker 1: what that super Bowl is infamous for. And then all
- 5:35Speaker 1: these years later that was super Bowl forty nine. So
- 5:37Speaker 1: eleven years later they meet and there are just two
- 5:40Speaker 1: completely different franchises. What strikes me, what makes this the
- 5:45Speaker 1: most interesting super Bowl matchup that we've had in a
- 5:48Speaker 1: long time, is that this is the first super Bowl
- 5:54Speaker 1: since Super Bowl thirty eight, okay, in which no team
- 6:03Speaker 1: or neither of the teams had made the playoffs the
- 6:06Speaker 1: year before. All Right, super Bowl thirty eight was Patriots
- 6:11Speaker 1: versus Panthers. All right, so that is that is now
- 6:17Speaker 1: if I'm doing the math here, two and three, that's
- 6:19Speaker 1: like twenty three years ago. So it's the first Super
- 6:22Speaker 1: Bowl in twenty three years that neither contestant had been
- 6:26Speaker 1: in the playoffs the year before. But I think it's
- 6:28Speaker 1: even more unique than that, going further than that, because
- 6:33Speaker 1: in two thousand and three when the Patriots played the Panthers,
- 6:36Speaker 1: that was Brady's everybody remembers that, that was Brady's second
- 6:40Speaker 1: Super Bowl victory. The Panthers were getting destroyed for about
- 6:44Speaker 1: on a half and then maybe even better part of
- 6:46Speaker 1: three quarters, and then all of a sudden, wait, was
- 6:49Speaker 1: it destroyed or was it just they weren't playing well
- 6:51Speaker 1: and it was close, but all of a sudden the
- 6:53Speaker 1: third and the late in the fourth quarter, Brady and
- 6:56Speaker 1: Jake Dell home from the Panthers. Just I mean, it
- 6:59Speaker 1: was like Anon. They were throwing touchdowns all over the place.
- 7:03Speaker 1: And then the game ends with the Patriots winning thirty
- 7:06Speaker 1: two to twenty nine. It was it was a low
- 7:09Speaker 1: scoring game at halftime, and then by the end of
- 7:11Speaker 1: it you had over sixty points on the board between
- 7:15Speaker 1: the two teams. And again, so that was, you know,
- 7:19Speaker 1: a long, long time ago, twenty two years ago. But
- 7:21Speaker 1: I don't to me, that's not as unique as this
- 7:24Speaker 1: Super Bowl because even though the Patriots hadn't made the
- 7:28Speaker 1: playoffs the year before, the Panthers came out of nowhere.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Nobody expected that the Patriots, though two years before that
- 7:35Speaker 1: had won the Super Bowl over the Rams. That was
- 7:37Speaker 1: Tom Brady's first Super Bowl. So there were a lot
- 7:40Speaker 1: of guys on that two thousand and three Patriots team. Yes,
- 7:46Speaker 1: they didn't make it into the playoffs two thousand and two,
- 7:48Speaker 1: but in two thousand and three, you know, you got
- 7:50Speaker 1: a lot of guys on that team that had won
- 7:52Speaker 1: it with Brady in two thousand and one. So if
- 7:56Speaker 1: you're really gonna go back and find the last time
- 7:58Speaker 1: two teams were in the Super Bowl, bawl that nobody
- 8:01Speaker 1: predicted them to be in the Super Bowl. And I
- 8:03Speaker 1: think that's fair. No one saw this Patriots team that
- 8:06Speaker 1: won I think four games the year before in the
- 8:08Speaker 1: Super Bowl, and I think we expected the Seahawks would
- 8:12Speaker 1: be better, but I didn't hear anybody putting them in
- 8:15Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. The Rams were considered the class of
- 8:17Speaker 1: the NFC West, the Niners. People felt would have a
- 8:21Speaker 1: bounce back year from the year before. I think we
- 8:23Speaker 1: all thought that the Seahawks would be an improved team,
- 8:26Speaker 1: But there were so many questions with how would Sam
- 8:29Speaker 1: Darnold play after they get rid of Gito Smith and
- 8:33Speaker 1: you know they had fired their oc to bring in
- 8:35Speaker 1: Clint Kobik. There were a lot of changes. They were
- 8:37Speaker 1: clearly building something under Mike McDonald, But I don't think
- 8:42Speaker 1: anybody saw this team in the Super Bowl. So well,
- 8:46Speaker 1: you have to go back to me all the way.
- 8:49Speaker 1: There's a lot of dynasties, a lot of a lot
- 8:50Speaker 1: of homes, there's a lot of of course, some Niners
- 8:54Speaker 1: teams in there. There's some obviously all the Brady uh Patriots.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Seems you have to go back to me to the
- 9:02Speaker 1: Giants versus the Ravens in two thousand. That was Super
- 9:06Speaker 1: Bowl thirty five, Okay, so that is a long long
- 9:12Speaker 1: time ago. Well it's three years before in the two
- 9:15Speaker 1: thousand and three Super Bowl. Just reference, So you go
- 9:17Speaker 1: back to about twenty six years before, you can come
- 9:24Speaker 1: and find a matchup where you just couldn't see both
- 9:28Speaker 1: teams in the Super Bowl the year in the two
- 9:30Speaker 1: thousand the Giants played the Ravens in the Super Bowl.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Neither team had made the playoffs the year before. The
- 9:36Speaker 1: Giants were seven to nine that year and the Ravens
- 9:40Speaker 1: were eight to eight. And in fact, the Giants had
- 9:43Speaker 1: only been in the playoffs one time and they lost
- 9:47Speaker 1: the first round in the prior six years, so there
- 9:50Speaker 1: was no build up. They were in the second year
- 9:52Speaker 1: that year of Kerry Collins. You know, they were hoping
- 9:55Speaker 1: to be competitive. I'm sure this is like prior to
- 9:59Speaker 1: you know, Andy Reid coming to the Eagles and transforming
- 10:02Speaker 1: them into annual division contenders. So Jim Fossil was the coach,
- 10:08Speaker 1: and you know, Jason Seahorn I believe was, you know,
- 10:11Speaker 1: one of their star players, and it might have been
- 10:13Speaker 1: I think straighthand was probably just starting off on the
- 10:17Speaker 1: I really forget, you know, who the who the building
- 10:20Speaker 1: blocks of that Giants team was in the in the
- 10:23Speaker 1: two thousand. The Ravens similarly, remember the Ravens in two
- 10:28Speaker 1: thousand had only been the Ravens for about four years.
- 10:32Speaker 1: They had, you know, come over from the Cleveland the
- 10:35Speaker 1: Cleveland Browns, everybody remembers the story kind of leave and
- 10:38Speaker 1: go to uh to Baltimore and take them to Baltimore
- 10:43Speaker 1: after Baltimore had lost the Colts, you know, several years
- 10:46Speaker 1: before that. But yeah, the Browns expand into I'm sorry,
- 10:52Speaker 1: the Ravens expand into Baltimore in ninety six, I believe.
- 10:56Speaker 1: And they were just an average to blow average team.
- 11:00Speaker 1: They actually hadn't been none of those players had been
- 11:02Speaker 1: in the playoffs since nineteen ninety five when they were
- 11:05Speaker 1: the Browns, and they won eleven games under a guy
- 11:08Speaker 1: named Bill Belichick. All Right, so a year later, they're
- 11:11Speaker 1: in Baltimore, they're building up, they're in just an average team,
- 11:14Speaker 1: and then bam, in two thousand, they are in the
- 11:18Speaker 1: super Bowl. So to me, this is the most unique
- 11:21Speaker 1: matchup of teams that you couldn't have predicted to be
- 11:24Speaker 1: in the super Bowl since the two thousand seasons. That's
- 11:27Speaker 1: twenty six years, or maybe let's see if that's a
- 11:29Speaker 1: two thousand season that super Bowls play in two thousand
- 11:32Speaker 1: and one, the Super Bowls played in two tho. Yeah,
- 11:34Speaker 1: twenty five years. Okay, that's a long, long long time.
- 11:38Speaker 1: I uh man, I'm gonna be fifty this year. So
- 11:41Speaker 1: I was twenty five when that super Bowl took place,
- 11:45Speaker 1: which is kind of amazing. All the things that have
- 11:47Speaker 1: happened to me in my life. When I think about
- 11:49Speaker 1: that that Giants Ravens Super Bowl, that the Ravens defense was,
- 11:54Speaker 1: This was early Ray Lewis. This was a great Ravens
- 11:58Speaker 1: defense under Brian Bill, who was supposed to be an
- 12:01Speaker 1: offensive mind to head coach. And if you remember, the
- 12:04Speaker 1: Ravens started that year with Tony Banks as their quarterback,
- 12:09Speaker 1: who was a very good passer of the ball but
- 12:12Speaker 1: had huge fumbling issues. I mean he could he was
- 12:15Speaker 1: with the Rams when they were in Saint Louis, then
- 12:17Speaker 1: he comes over to Baltimore. He could always throw the ball.
- 12:20Speaker 1: In fact, I remember him when he was at Michigan
- 12:22Speaker 1: State because I think I was at Penn State when
- 12:25Speaker 1: Tony Banks was quarterback at Michigan State. I think I
- 12:28Speaker 1: was a student there at the time. And you know,
- 12:30Speaker 1: Banks could always throw the ball, but he couldn't hang
- 12:33Speaker 1: on to the ball. He was a fumble machine while
- 12:36Speaker 1: he was with the Rams, and then he came to
- 12:38Speaker 1: the Ravens and then he you know, at some point
- 12:41Speaker 1: Trent Doupher became the quarterback and they were basically just
- 12:44Speaker 1: running the ball with a rookie running back named Jamal
- 12:47Speaker 1: Lewis getting as much as they could at a Trent
- 12:50Speaker 1: douper veteran at the time, and really riding a defense
- 12:54Speaker 1: that was that was just an unbelievable defense with Ray Lewis.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Want to say bowl weear Peter Boulwaer coming off the edge.
- 13:04Speaker 1: They had. God, they had some pretty good players in
- 13:06Speaker 1: the secondary who were scape me right now. I mean
- 13:09Speaker 1: they were a Chris what was his name? You know,
- 13:12Speaker 1: I don't want to cheat here and start looking at
- 13:14Speaker 1: the roster. I just you know, going off what I
- 13:16Speaker 1: remember from this team twenty five years ago. But yeah,
- 13:18Speaker 1: Ray Lewis, they had a couple guys in the secondary
- 13:21Speaker 1: that were amazing, good guys up front in bowlwear and
- 13:25Speaker 1: and Lewis of course, and they were just a great defense.
- 13:27Speaker 1: It was an unbelievable defensive team they had. The Giant
- 13:31Speaker 1: Giants couldn't move the ball against them at all. The
- 13:35Speaker 1: Ravens went into the halftime with lead. The Giants came
- 13:37Speaker 1: out and returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. If
- 13:41Speaker 1: I'm correct, I can't remember the guy's name off the
- 13:45Speaker 1: top of my head. He returns a kick for a touchdown,
- 13:47Speaker 1: and then I do think I remember this guy's name.
- 13:51Speaker 1: I believe the very next kickoff by the Giants was
- 13:54Speaker 1: returned for a touchdown by Jermaine Lewis. It's either that
- 13:59Speaker 1: or his punt. Maybe somebody forced the punt punt return.
- 14:02Speaker 1: But they were back to back return touchdowns in that game.
- 14:06Speaker 1: And when the Giants got one and then right away
- 14:09Speaker 1: gave it one up to the Ravens, you knew that
- 14:11Speaker 1: the Ravens were just gonna wind up winning that game
- 14:14Speaker 1: and carrying on. They did. They did. They dominated that game,
- 14:19Speaker 1: they wanted thirty four to seven. That game was played
- 14:22Speaker 1: in Tampa. I remember that, so uh yeah that to me,
- 14:26Speaker 1: this is the most unique matchup since that Super Bowl
- 14:31Speaker 1: in that how it took for both of these teams
- 14:34Speaker 1: to get here was unbelievable. The Patriots, you know, a
- 14:39Speaker 1: couple of years removed from just a couple of years
- 14:42Speaker 1: removed from Belichick. Last year, you know, they went through
- 14:45Speaker 1: it with Drob Mayo. I never liked the fact that
- 14:47Speaker 1: they hired Drob Mayo just to fire him. I understand
- 14:50Speaker 1: like Vrabel became available. I understand he was a linebacker,
- 14:54Speaker 1: Championship linebacker during the Brady era. I understand all the
- 14:57Speaker 1: reasons that they would want. I just that they handed
- 15:01Speaker 1: they made Rod Mario the successor at Belichick, which is
- 15:04Speaker 1: an impossible situation, gave him a terrible roster, and then
- 15:09Speaker 1: when he didn't win, basically cut him off after a
- 15:12Speaker 1: year because Mike Rabel became available. And then they spent
- 15:15Speaker 1: a truckload of money and had their quarterback in year two.
- 15:19Speaker 1: So it kind of sucked for draw Mayo. I hated
- 15:21Speaker 1: the way that went down for him, But obviously a
- 15:24Speaker 1: great job done by Mike Rabel. And by the way
- 15:29Speaker 1: these teams came together. By the way, there's a very
- 15:32Speaker 1: interesting tie here. I don't know that I've seen reported on. Okay,
- 15:37Speaker 1: the Patriots general manager is Elliott Wolf, and it was
- 15:42Speaker 1: weird how he got the job. You know, Belichick was
- 15:44Speaker 1: still the cizarre there a couple of years ago Wolf
- 15:47Speaker 1: was in the front office. Then the Drawd Mayo year,
- 15:50Speaker 1: they had Wolf making the call out, actually ordaining him
- 15:54Speaker 1: as the GM. But he is now the GM, and
- 15:56Speaker 1: he put this team, a lot of this team together
- 16:00Speaker 1: all right, and he made a ton of free agent
- 16:01Speaker 1: moves that worked out, trades that worked out. You know,
- 16:04Speaker 1: he brought in Steph Diggs, it worked out, brought in
- 16:06Speaker 1: Christian Gazal drafted Christian Gals, worked out, spent a ton
- 16:11Speaker 1: of money on. Milton Williams has played unbelievably throughout. He
- 16:14Speaker 1: had a good regular season. I know it was inhibited
- 16:17Speaker 1: a little bit by an injury, but he has been
- 16:19Speaker 1: amazing in the playoffs. Worked out. Carlton Davis, free Agencigning
- 16:23Speaker 1: worked out so really good moves of course by Elliott Wolf.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Their GM. On the other side, Seattle's GM is John Schneider,
- 16:31Speaker 1: has been there forever. He built the legion in a
- 16:33Speaker 1: boom team that won a Super Bowl with Pete Carroll.
- 16:36Speaker 1: All right, there's a tie that binds these guys that
- 16:39Speaker 1: they both come from the Packers organization. John Schneider was
- 16:46Speaker 1: a scout for the Packers for a couple of years
- 16:49Speaker 1: when they were there under legendary Hall of Fame General
- 16:53Speaker 1: manager Ron Wolf, who you know basically Ron Wolf. You
- 16:57Speaker 1: know all about Ron Wolf. He has three Super Bowl rings.
- 17:00Speaker 1: He has one as the GM of the Packers under
- 17:04Speaker 1: you know, he was the man, along with Mike Holmgren,
- 17:07Speaker 1: who was basically responsible for making the Packers what we
- 17:10Speaker 1: see of them today, which is a team that is
- 17:13Speaker 1: almost always in the playoffs. Almost always has elite quarterback play,
- 17:18Speaker 1: great defenses, great coaching. I mean, the Packers are a
- 17:21Speaker 1: fantastic organization a year in and year. They don't win
- 17:25Speaker 1: the Super Bowl a whole lot, you know, but they
- 17:28Speaker 1: are the smallest market obviously in the NFL, and yet
- 17:31Speaker 1: there's so much history, there's so much tradition that has
- 17:34Speaker 1: been carried on. They're a lot like the Steelers in
- 17:37Speaker 1: that regard. They're a lot like the current Ravens in
- 17:40Speaker 1: that regard. And that you know, they have a ton
- 17:42Speaker 1: of great executives. They always have a ton of great coaches.
- 17:45Speaker 1: They always figure out a way to get a really
- 17:47Speaker 1: good to elite quarterback. And the way they are built
- 17:51Speaker 1: running game, defense, They scouting, they usually hit on their
- 17:55Speaker 1: draft picks, build from the inside out. Very very solid organization.
- 18:02Speaker 1: John Schneider came up through the Packers chain under Ron Wolf,
- 18:07Speaker 1: went to Seattle and built a team that is very
- 18:11Speaker 1: Green Bay Ish in how they operate a little differently,
- 18:14Speaker 1: you know, a lot more known for their secondary play
- 18:18Speaker 1: more so than their upfront play, but still strong defensive teams,
- 18:22Speaker 1: gotten good quarterback play, you know, from Russell Wilson and
- 18:25Speaker 1: now Sam Darnold and then On the other end, Elliott
- 18:28Speaker 1: Wolf is Ron Wolfe's son, so he obviously did not
- 18:32Speaker 1: come up. He came up through the Packers. Shane Ron
- 18:35Speaker 1: had already retired by the nd. It was more of
- 18:37Speaker 1: a Ted Thompson operation, who was another great gm who
- 18:41Speaker 1: learned under Ron Wolf and carried on the tradition there
- 18:44Speaker 1: in Green Bay before. Now you have Brian Guttenkunst who
- 18:49Speaker 1: is their general manager. But there's a family there, you know,
- 18:53Speaker 1: John Schneider, Elliott Wolf, that green Bay chain. Both of
- 18:58Speaker 1: them go in different directions. They leave Green Bay and
- 19:01Speaker 1: they have both built Super Bowl contenders that are going
- 19:04Speaker 1: to play against each other. They're built differently. Obviously. The
- 19:09Speaker 1: Patriots have been more built on free agency and bringing
- 19:17Speaker 1: in guys from the outside, which is not a Green
- 19:19Speaker 1: Bay thing, by the way, but it is a green
- 19:21Speaker 1: Bay thing to build through the draft and take your shots.
- 19:24Speaker 1: I mean that goes back to Wolf getting Reggie White,
- 19:27Speaker 1: which is painful for Eagles fans to come to Green Bay,
- 19:30Speaker 1: and he won a Super Bowl there. He would always
- 19:33Speaker 1: the Packers under round White and then Ted Thompson would
- 19:35Speaker 1: always have a core that they built through the draft,
- 19:38Speaker 1: but then somebody that they added you know, whether it
- 19:40Speaker 1: was Reggie White, whether it was Charles Woodson, somebody that
- 19:44Speaker 1: they would add trading to get. You know, Brett Favre,
- 19:47Speaker 1: he was a trade with Atlanta. Nobody knew who Brett
- 19:49Speaker 1: Farv was. Mike Hall, Holmgren identified him. Body had some talent,
- 19:54Speaker 1: brought him in and the next thing you know, he's
- 19:55Speaker 1: a future Hall of Fame quarterback. Right, So that is
- 19:59Speaker 1: the packer. But this Patriots team built a little bit
- 20:02Speaker 1: more because they had so much money to spend. They
- 20:04Speaker 1: were terrible. They had gotten huge contracts off the books,
- 20:08Speaker 1: and then they had money to spend, so they brought
- 20:10Speaker 1: in you know, they brought in Milton Williams for a
- 20:14Speaker 1: lot of money. They brought in Carlton Davis for a
- 20:16Speaker 1: lot of money. They brought in Steph Diggs, paid him
- 20:19Speaker 1: some money that nobody really thought at the time was smart.
- 20:22Speaker 1: I think they gave him a three year deal when
- 20:24Speaker 1: it looked like Steph Diggs was on his last legs
- 20:26Speaker 1: after just an average season in Houston. So good on them,
- 20:30Speaker 1: Good on their scouting. You know, they do have a
- 20:33Speaker 1: lot of good guys that they drafted from Barmoard to
- 20:35Speaker 1: of course, Drake May, who an MVP season at Gonzales,
- 20:38Speaker 1: who's a really good player. Smart team. I mean, listen,
- 20:41Speaker 1: they drafted Treyvon Henderson. He's a big part of what
- 20:44Speaker 1: they do. They signed Hunter Henry years ago in free
- 20:48Speaker 1: agency because they were big on tight ends and he's
- 20:51Speaker 1: made contributions. You know, they drafted the left tackle out
- 20:55Speaker 1: of LSU. So I'm not trying to make it seem
- 20:57Speaker 1: like this Patriots team is built all through the draft.
- 21:01Speaker 1: I mean, I'm sorry, it's built all through free agency.
- 21:03Speaker 1: They've got a lot of core players that they drafted,
- 21:06Speaker 1: but you know, they also have some real outstanding players
- 21:10Speaker 1: from free agency and trades that have helped them. And
- 21:12Speaker 1: that speaks Elliot Wolf sort of having that packer mentality
- 21:15Speaker 1: where it's okay to be aggressive when the opportunity presents itself.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I don't think you'll see this Patriots team be this
- 21:23Speaker 1: aggressive in free agency going forward. Now with all these
- 21:26Speaker 1: big contracts they have, excuse me, they'll probably be built
- 21:30Speaker 1: more through the draft. But it worked out for them.
- 21:33Speaker 1: And you look at the Seahawks team. Now, this is
- 21:36Speaker 1: kind of packerish that it's almost entirely, especially on offense,
- 21:40Speaker 1: almost entirely built through the draft, they got two first
- 21:45Speaker 1: round picks on the offensive line, a third round pick
- 21:47Speaker 1: on the offensive line. Through the outside guys, obviously, the
- 21:51Speaker 1: big one is Sam Darnold. That's their Reggie White. That
- 21:54Speaker 1: was their big splash. They took a gamble on and
- 21:58Speaker 1: it is worked out, unbelieve fievably. Donald has been everything
- 22:03Speaker 1: they wanted and more. He has shed that reputation that
- 22:08Speaker 1: he can't get it done in a big game under pressure.
- 22:11Speaker 1: They certainly has uh, and now he's one win away
- 22:15Speaker 1: from proving a lot of people wrong and becoming a
- 22:18Speaker 1: Super Bowl champion.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Uh.
- 22:20Speaker 1: The other guys, you know, the trade for Rashid Shaheed
- 22:23Speaker 1: was very smart, very crafty. Shaheed had played for Clint Kubiak,
- 22:28Speaker 1: their offensive coordinator the year before, and when Clint was
- 22:31Speaker 1: with the New Orleans Saints, they obviously drafted Smith and Jigbah.
- 22:36Speaker 1: It was a great pick. Cooper Cup has made some
- 22:38Speaker 1: really big plays throughout the playoffs. Not maybe throughout the
- 22:41Speaker 1: whole year, but certainly in the playoffs. He was a
- 22:44Speaker 1: guy that they signed in free agency. But that's about
- 22:47Speaker 1: that's it. The Cup was a modest free agent signing
- 22:51Speaker 1: Shaheed was a good, smart, practical trade, but it's not
- 22:55Speaker 1: like they give him first round pick for him. And
- 22:57Speaker 1: then of course the decision to go in and gets
- 23:00Speaker 1: Sam Darnold was what put them over the top. On defense,
- 23:04Speaker 1: you see a lot of guys build through the draft,
- 23:06Speaker 1: a'm and Warri Their safety has been unbelievable for them,
- 23:10Speaker 1: Woolan and Bryant both of their and Witherspoon all three
- 23:14Speaker 1: of their three of their defensive backs that they drafted.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Julian Love was obviously a free agent signing. They trade
- 23:21Speaker 1: for Ernest Jones from Tennessee. It helped stabilize their linebacker level.
- 23:25Speaker 1: They do have two guys up front that they brought
- 23:27Speaker 1: in from elsewhere. They got Leonard Williams in a trade
- 23:30Speaker 1: with the Giants a couple of years ago, DeMarcus Lawrence
- 23:32Speaker 1: free agent signing. But for the most part, you see
- 23:35Speaker 1: guys that were there, boy A Mafe, Derek Hall, and
- 23:40Speaker 1: again most of those guys in the secondary. Josh Job
- 23:43Speaker 1: was an interesting get for them from the Eagles, who
- 23:45Speaker 1: via the forty nine ers. So the defense is a
- 23:49Speaker 1: little bit more varied as far as bringing in guys
- 23:53Speaker 1: from outside, but most of their you know, a lot
- 23:55Speaker 1: of their really impact players like Witherspoon and am and
- 23:59Speaker 1: Worri were guys that they drafted Byron Murphy, their their
- 24:06Speaker 1: first round pick from a couple of years ago. Nose
- 24:07Speaker 1: tackle really a good player guy they drafted. So that's
- 24:10Speaker 1: what makes this game to me very unique. I mean,
- 24:13Speaker 1: you have two teams that are have gms, that are
- 24:17Speaker 1: like minded and come from the same scouting chain. You've
- 24:21Speaker 1: got two head coaches. You know, one who played in
- 24:24Speaker 1: the league and came through under the Brady Championship dynasty,
- 24:28Speaker 1: did well in Tennessee. Mike Vrabel did built them up.
- 24:31Speaker 1: He's clearly a good coach. He's he cuts against the
- 24:34Speaker 1: grain of defensive coaches. He doesn't feel like you have
- 24:37Speaker 1: to run all the time. His time management and clock
- 24:40Speaker 1: management is very good. His situational management is elite. Mike
- 24:46Speaker 1: Vrabel is a very very good head coach. You do
- 24:49Speaker 1: not see a ton of head coaches who are linebackers.
- 24:52Speaker 1: It's not one of those positions. Backup quarterback is the
- 24:56Speaker 1: is the position. But you have him, and of course
- 24:58Speaker 1: you have Mike McDonald who came up in through the
- 25:01Speaker 1: Baltimore chain. Everybody thought he was a genius on defense,
- 25:06Speaker 1: and you know, you could say that the Seahawks took
- 25:09Speaker 1: a chance on him when I hired him a couple
- 25:11Speaker 1: of years ago. This is just his second year. He
- 25:13Speaker 1: had done a great job. But you know, he'd been
- 25:15Speaker 1: with Baltimore for a long time, was obviously in Michigan
- 25:20Speaker 1: at one point with Harbaugh as well. So there's that whole,
- 25:23Speaker 1: you know, like kind of Jesse Minter now that Harbaugh
- 25:25Speaker 1: slash Harball, Baltimore Michigan thing going on. But he had
- 25:29Speaker 1: not been with any other NFL team Mike McDonald when
- 25:33Speaker 1: he was with the Ravens for as long as he was,
- 25:35Speaker 1: and then he gets hired to b Seattle's head coach.
- 25:38Speaker 1: So great decision there, and I believe, if I'm not mistaken,
- 25:41Speaker 1: they waited a while because Baltimore was going. Yeah, they
- 25:44Speaker 1: waited to get Mike McDonald because Baltimore was making a
- 25:48Speaker 1: pretty deep run two years ago in the playoffs, and
- 25:52Speaker 1: that was worth the wait. As far as the matchup
- 25:55Speaker 1: on the field, you know, both quarterbacks are dealing with injuries.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Darnold has been dealing with the old bleak and hasn't
- 26:00Speaker 1: really seemingly hurt him. May has been dealing with a
- 26:03Speaker 1: shoulder all right, and then he was also out of
- 26:06Speaker 1: practice this past week with an illness. Now, May My
- 26:10Speaker 1: early thought on this game is that Seattle is the
- 26:15Speaker 1: better team. I think they're the better team by ten points.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Both teams lack a whole lot of playoff experience, but
- 26:23Speaker 1: at least Donald was there with the Vikings last year.
- 26:26Speaker 1: You know, this will be May's. This is his first
- 26:28Speaker 1: trip to the playoffs. He's played well, but he's turned
- 26:30Speaker 1: the ball over. He's been sacked a bunch, He's fumbled
- 26:33Speaker 1: a bunch, thrown some interceptions. May has May willed that
- 26:38Speaker 1: team to win over the Broncos with his legs more
- 26:42Speaker 1: so than his arms. A few nice passes, but really
- 26:45Speaker 1: with his legs, and I'm not taking any credit away,
- 26:49Speaker 1: I think he's been very impressive. I think he's made
- 26:52Speaker 1: some really impressive players altogether. Throughout the playoffs, they have
- 26:54Speaker 1: had to face some really good defensive teams, starting with
- 26:58Speaker 1: the Chargers going on to the Texans, than the Broncos.
- 27:01Speaker 1: That's maybe three of the four best defenses in the NFL.
- 27:05Speaker 1: All right, Now you've got to play the Seahawks. Who
- 27:07Speaker 1: are you know, maybe the other one? All right, So
- 27:10Speaker 1: he has done a great job, but he has turned
- 27:13Speaker 1: the ball over and he has taken a lot of hits.
- 27:16Speaker 1: I would say that I think Donald has played a
- 27:20Speaker 1: better brand of quarterback. Now, he may not have had
- 27:23Speaker 1: the same schedule that against defenses that New England has
- 27:29Speaker 1: had the face, but Donald has done a better job
- 27:32Speaker 1: of protecting the ball, better job of making plays. I
- 27:36Speaker 1: think the Seahawks have done an excellent job of being
- 27:39Speaker 1: able to find ways to take Jackson, Smith and Jigba
- 27:43Speaker 1: and line them up all over the field, including the backfield,
- 27:46Speaker 1: to get him open. They are excellent with Clint Kubiak
- 27:50Speaker 1: at manufacturing their offense getting open looks, and Donald and
- 27:55Speaker 1: Smith and Jigba have taken advantage of it. Smith and
- 27:57Speaker 1: Jigbuck can beat anybody in this league. So even if
- 28:02Speaker 1: Christian Gonzalez is on them, I think that they'll figure
- 28:04Speaker 1: out ways to get them off press coverage, move them around,
- 28:07Speaker 1: get them open against the Patriots defense.
- 28:09Speaker 3: Hey, it's that time of the year that everyone's trying

- 31:11Speaker 1: community with specials for fans, students, service members, and healthcare pros.
- 31:17Speaker 1: Camedn Apothecary top quality cannabis, great prices, and an experience
- 31:22Speaker 1: made for Philly fans twenty one and up. This will
- 31:25Speaker 1: be a test to see if Vrabel is like Belichick
- 31:29Speaker 1: in that Belichick was famous for being able in a
- 31:34Speaker 1: Super Bowl game to take out the opponent's number one
- 31:38Speaker 1: guy and try to make you beat them with the rest.
- 31:42Speaker 1: I mean it started when he took Marshall Falk out
- 31:45Speaker 1: of the Saint Louis Rams offense in the first Super
- 31:49Speaker 1: Bowl that Brady ever won, but continued, all that's what
- 31:54Speaker 1: Belichick was known for. If you're going to beat the Patriots,
- 31:57Speaker 1: you need somebody other than your number one guy to
- 32:00Speaker 1: step up. So does that mean that Smith and Jigba
- 32:04Speaker 1: is going to be that guy for the Seahawks who
- 32:07Speaker 1: is contained? And then they're gonna need something from either
- 32:10Speaker 1: Kenneth Walker, who had a really great game against the Broncos.
- 32:13Speaker 1: They're gonna need something from Rashichiheed who doesn't catch a
- 32:16Speaker 1: whole lot of passes. He has made more of an
- 32:18Speaker 1: impact on special teams than catching the passes. Does it
- 32:23Speaker 1: mean Barner the tight end? Does it mean Bobo who
- 32:26Speaker 1: had a big touchdown against the Rams. Somebody will have
- 32:29Speaker 1: to probably have a better game than they ordinarily have.
- 32:35Speaker 1: If Vrabel channels is inner Belichick and figures out a
- 32:39Speaker 1: way to take Jackson, Smith and Jigba out of the game.
- 32:43Speaker 1: No one has been able to do it yet, so
- 32:45Speaker 1: it would truly be some coaching genius if Rabel can
- 32:48Speaker 1: do it. But I think that that is gonna be
- 32:49Speaker 1: a big part of the matchup. And I would imagine
- 32:52Speaker 1: that the team that turns the ball over less will
- 32:55Speaker 1: win this game. And I don't think you'll see a
- 32:58Speaker 1: whole lot of turnovers from the Seahawks. They play a
- 33:01Speaker 1: very clean brand of football. The Patriots have been turning
- 33:04Speaker 1: the ball over, I mean, getting away with it, and
- 33:07Speaker 1: we'll see if that continues. If that's the case, then
- 33:09Speaker 1: I think I'll be right that the Seahawks are about
- 33:12Speaker 1: a ten point team better than the New England Patriots.
- 33:16Speaker 1: I know it's a high number. I know it's a
- 33:18Speaker 1: high number. I'm not saying it's gonna be like some
- 33:20Speaker 1: kind of blowout. It could be a three point game
- 33:22Speaker 1: until the fourth quarter and then next thing, you know,
- 33:24Speaker 1: Seahawks put it in the end zone, go up ten,
- 33:27Speaker 1: and then the Patriots, you know, have one final driving
- 33:30Speaker 1: can't get it done. We'll see other things around the league. Man,
- 33:37Speaker 1: there's a lot going on. I probably should cover that
- 33:39Speaker 1: in another pod unto itself. You know, Adam and I
- 33:42Speaker 1: are covering it. You know, I would say it's a
- 33:44Speaker 1: What happened in Cleveland is very weird. You know, they
- 33:47Speaker 1: hire Monk in with the idea that they want to
- 33:49Speaker 1: have Monkin and you know keep Jim Schwartz, who's still
- 33:53Speaker 1: under contract there. Schwartz gets pissed as you would imagine
- 33:56Speaker 1: says he's never going back there again, leaves, but he's
- 33:59Speaker 1: under contract, so I don't know how they would make
- 34:01Speaker 1: that work. If they can, they'll probably have to overpay
- 34:03Speaker 1: Schwartz to continue to stay there and make him happy.
- 34:07Speaker 1: He's generally the head coach of the defense. Monkin's not
- 34:09Speaker 1: going to get in the way. I don't know what
- 34:11Speaker 1: their plans for a quarterback, but I do know that
- 34:15Speaker 1: I think it's a good thing for the Eagles because
- 34:18Speaker 1: John Harbaugh can't take Todd Monkin with him now to
- 34:22Speaker 1: the Giants. And you know, some people have said, well,
- 34:24Speaker 1: that's not a great thing because now that's another offensive
- 34:27Speaker 1: play caller that the Eagles were completing competing with. But
- 34:29Speaker 1: the Eagles were pretty clear once they couldn't, you know,
- 34:32Speaker 1: get Dable or couldn't get McDaniel, that they were going
- 34:37Speaker 1: to look for the brightest, youngest mind and they didn't care.
- 34:40Speaker 1: And so they bring in Mannion. But now you got
- 34:43Speaker 1: Harbes looking at maybe bringing in Cliff Kingsbury or Brian Callahan,
- 34:47Speaker 1: you know, kind of that proven play caller that I
- 34:49Speaker 1: think Eagles fans were hoping that the Eagles would want
- 34:52Speaker 1: to bring in. So it's really interesting. It'll be I
- 34:56Speaker 1: think the most fascinating thing is John Harbaugh was on
- 34:59Speaker 1: with Howard Eskin and I'll leave you guys with this.
- 35:02Speaker 1: Harbo is on with Howard Eskin on Howard Eskins I
- 35:05Speaker 1: Guess podcast, and he said something very interesting. He's the
- 35:10Speaker 1: first person to actually say this at all that I
- 35:14Speaker 1: have seen becoming a head coach in the NFC East.
- 35:19Speaker 1: That's not for the Eagles. And Harbaugh basically said, we
- 35:22Speaker 1: have to build a team to beat the Eagles. Okay,
- 35:25Speaker 1: I can't remember any coach actually saying that since in
- 35:30Speaker 1: the two thousands till now, since the Eagles started their
- 35:33Speaker 1: assent to being who they are and winning the NFC
- 35:35Speaker 1: East quite a bit and going to Super Bowls and
- 35:37Speaker 1: winning a Super Bowl to Super Bowls, all right, I've
- 35:40Speaker 1: not seen a coach come for the Giants, or for
- 35:43Speaker 1: the Commanders or Football Team Washington whatever, or the Cowboys
- 35:47Speaker 1: and say our primary purpose is building a team to
- 35:51Speaker 1: beat the Eagles. But this doesn't surprise me that Harbaugh
- 35:55Speaker 1: said it. And it's not because he came from the Eagles,
- 35:58Speaker 1: all right. It is because I think I've told you
- 36:01Speaker 1: guys this in prior shows. The Ravens and the Steelers
- 36:05Speaker 1: are very like minded organizations. If you ever talk to
- 36:09Speaker 1: executives with them, they build their team a specific way.
- 36:14Speaker 1: They build their team to beat each other. You will
- 36:18Speaker 1: hear people from the Ravens say, we know that we
- 36:21Speaker 1: need to beat a team that can play in cold weather,
- 36:25Speaker 1: that is physically tough, that is mentally tough, that understands
- 36:29Speaker 1: what these Steelers Ravens games are like. And I have
- 36:33Speaker 1: actually taught both franchises believe that way the same thing.
- 36:36Speaker 1: In Pittsburgh. They know they have to build a team
- 36:38Speaker 1: that can go to Baltimore in December and maybe January,
- 36:42Speaker 1: in cold weather with the wind swirling and beat a
- 36:45Speaker 1: team that is built from the inside out physically tough.
- 36:48Speaker 1: I have spoken to executives from and coaches from both
- 36:50Speaker 1: these teams and they believe that they believe they don't
- 36:53Speaker 1: just build a team. And the fascinating thing is, guys
- 36:57Speaker 1: have told me that there are players that they have
- 36:59Speaker 1: had ranked high in the draft or free agency, mostly
- 37:03Speaker 1: the draft right who they felt were very talented that
- 37:06Speaker 1: they didn't take because they didn't feel that that specific
- 37:09Speaker 1: player could be a quote stealer or be a quote
- 37:14Speaker 1: raven It's not that they didn't have talent, but they
- 37:16Speaker 1: questioned whether that player was built for those those kind
- 37:20Speaker 1: of December January atmosphere games. That there are Steelers in
- 37:24Speaker 1: the Ravens constantly play against each other. So I've told
- 37:28Speaker 1: you guys this, it's about the identity. Those two teams
- 37:31Speaker 1: who were always in the playoffs, the Ravens and Steelers,
- 37:34Speaker 1: they firmly believe in having an identity. And I think
- 37:37Speaker 1: it's very interesting that Hardball coming from over from the
- 37:40Speaker 1: Ravens goes to New York and lays it down right
- 37:43Speaker 1: from the start. We need to build a team that
- 37:47Speaker 1: can beat the Eagles. Okay, so what does that mean?
- 37:53Speaker 1: I imagine the cold weather element is a part of it,
- 37:55Speaker 1: because obviously the Eagles and Giants are going to play
- 37:57Speaker 1: each other in a lot of December games. But it's
- 37:59Speaker 1: more that he knows how, he knows how, how he
- 38:02Speaker 1: thinks he knows how Jeffrey Loriie thinks he knows how
- 38:05Speaker 1: the Eagles have been built. It doesn't always matter who's
- 38:08Speaker 1: their head coach, it doesn't matter what schemer philosophy. He
- 38:11Speaker 1: just knows what the Eagles are and what they're looking for.
- 38:14Speaker 1: And now he has to build his team to be
- 38:18Speaker 1: counter not only counteract that, but then force the Eagles
- 38:22Speaker 1: to have to counteract what they do. I think it's fascinating.
- 38:25Speaker 1: I think it makes for a great renewed rivalry if
- 38:28Speaker 1: the Giants can get up to The Giants got some
- 38:30Speaker 1: talented players, man, they really do. I know people have
- 38:33Speaker 1: been saying that and it hasn't showed, but you know,
- 38:37Speaker 1: they got a lot of first round picks and they
- 38:39Speaker 1: got some players there. So we'll see what Harbaugh does.
- 38:42Speaker 1: But I think that really adds to the rivalry. I
- 38:45Speaker 1: was happy to hear John say it. It reminds me
- 38:48Speaker 1: of his mentality when he was with the Ravens and
- 38:50Speaker 1: many Steelers with the Steelers, and I think that that
- 38:53Speaker 1: can only be a good thing in general for the
- 38:55Speaker 1: Eagles Giants rivalry, which I do think over the next
- 38:58Speaker 1: few years will start to pay. I mean it already.
- 39:01Speaker 1: You saw the Giants beat the Eagles this year and
- 39:03Speaker 1: Jackson's art looks like he's going to be their guy.
- 39:06Speaker 1: And again they've got something. You know, Milik Neighbors is
- 39:09Speaker 1: going to come back from that acl They've got some
- 39:11Speaker 1: dogs up front on that defensive line, Harvall's got a
- 39:14Speaker 1: lot to work with, and I think him acknowledging that
- 39:17Speaker 1: he's got to build a team that has to beat
- 39:20Speaker 1: or can compete and beat the Eagles just makes it
- 39:23Speaker 1: all a very very fascinating potential renewed rivalry going forward.
- 39:29Speaker 1: All right, that's going to be it for this show.
- 39:31Speaker 1: Next weekend, I'll get a little bit more into the
- 39:33Speaker 1: x'es and o's of Seattle versus New England and New
- 39:36Speaker 1: England versus Seattle. We'll probably keep that show mostly just
- 39:39Speaker 1: a Super Bowl preview. I did want to, I just
- 39:42Speaker 1: I wanted in this show to give you some of
- 39:44Speaker 1: the non x's and o's things, you know, the executives,
- 39:49Speaker 1: where they come from, the scouting trees, how they got here,
- 39:51Speaker 1: how they built their teams, what makes this Super Bowl
- 39:54Speaker 1: so unique, this matchup. I wanted to get into more
- 39:56Speaker 1: of that before we take a deep dive into the
- 39:59Speaker 1: x's and o's week All right, everybody, have a great weekend.
- 40:02Speaker 1: Talk to issue the tree stick it. Stay tuned all
- 40:05Speaker 1: week long Inside the Birds coverage of the Eagles, myself, Kaplan,
- 40:10Speaker 1: Andrew deiceco We're probably going to have an inside the
- 40:13Speaker 1: Data with Sam Finkle on some of Sean Mannion's background
- 40:16Speaker 1: and what we can expect, and we'll have a lot
- 40:19Speaker 1: of programming going forward, so everybody have the great rest
- 40:22Speaker 1: of your weekend.
