[rock music] Did you ever shout out a birthday today? It's, uh, Cheap Trick's birthday. What's his name?
• 0:18
Uh- Oh, yeah, Robin Zander. There we go. Oh, top of the hill. Hey. Hey, everybody. We're, we're still getting ready, but- But we're still talking...
• 0:25
but you're listening anyway, so, uh, welcome to the Full Spectrum Cycling podcast. I didn't come up with any un- things for this week. Un- Uh, no unedited or- [laughs]... unapolo- any of those things. Unrehearsed. Un...
• 0:41
I need more un- words. [laughs] Please, please supply your un- words in the, uh, comment section, uh, of the webpage. So how about that snow? Hmm. Hmm. That was some snow. And might I add, it's about damn time.
• 0:59
[laughs] Damn time. I... My... I'm just... My brain was not equipped- For what?... right away. For the snow? For riding in it. It's just, like, little things. But simple. Simple. I- Simple things...
• 1:13
I was freaking giddy... just flake. Just... I just flaked completely. Yeah. I'm like, "Why am I swimming out?" I'm like, "Oh, okay, 'cause my tires are over-inflated." [laughs] That's how we learn. Exactly.
• 1:25
These things must come back to you once a year. [laughs] Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, so we got, uh, I don't know, somewhere around eight inches on Saturday. Was it Saturday? No. When? One of those days.
• 1:39
We got, like, three on Saturday and eight last night. Oh, I w-... By my house we got more. Really? We got, like, six to eight- Maybe it stacked... on the first one. First one and then this one, too. We got a lot of snow.
• 1:49
Oh. Yeah, I was sitting around five-ish. Oh, okay. Three, five. But whatever, yeah. Snow- It's plus or minus one... it's fun. Nonetheless. It's fun, fun, fun finally.
• 1:58
[laughs] Yeah, Mike and I took a pretty long ride on Sunday. Yes, part of it- Did, did you-... hiking... did you bike- [laughs] The first annual- On, hiking the bike... hike a, hike a bike with Mike ride. [laughs] Nice.
• 2:10
Did you by chance end up at the swinging door? We did. That was the carrot on the stick when I was laying around. [laughs] Yep. That's a motivating factor right there. Yeah, for sure. I was just...
• 2:20
I was ready to lick wounds from the day before when it was actively snowing and went down to Brady for a... Uh, there was, like, a block party. That's right, yep.
• 2:29
Platinum Boys and Dogs of Nexus C were playing, and it was good, but cold and windy and snowing and yeah. It- It took a, it took a toll, so it- And then the next day- Calling... Yeah.
• 2:42
[laughs] The call, the call of the door rose me from my [laughs] convalescence, I guess. I don't know.
• 2:47
Well, I had this great idea to do the ravine at Lake Park, and there's a lot more downfall there than there used to be.
• 2:54
Well, since they closed the bridge and everything, I don't think there's nearly as many people go down there anymore. Yeah, there's just some huge trees. We had a- Yeah [laughs]...
• 3:01
we had a, we had a five brancher to go over. [laughs] Yeah. Whoa. [laughs] Oh, yeah, yeah. It... Like threading. Yeah, it was like crochet. Just boom, boom. I just- Okay, over... I remember the- Yep... yeah. There we go.
• 3:11
Ah, yep. Trees. [laughs] I remember that trail being really, really easy to navigate, and you just pop out right on Lincoln Memorial and- Uh-huh... you're on your way to the lakefront where- Yep...
• 3:22
the ice is now actual ice. Unlike New Year's Day. Right? [laughs] Which is- Yeah, there's, um, I don't know, 60 feet of shore ice. I mean, it's- Wow... there's a lot of ice. Nice. And it's very, um...
• 3:36
The traction is good. I wasn't, I wasn't on studs at that point, and I had plenty of gription- Nice... on my- Simple... on my Kenda Juggernaut 5.0 or whatever, 4.5, uh, fat bike tires. Yeah.
• 3:50
Hanging on the wall now, 'cause, uh... Well, now I put the studs on. [laughs] And you're tubeless. And I'm tubeless. Totally tubeless. Yeah, with the, uh, Orange Seal Subzero stuff. Nice.
• 4:02
I don't know if it's gonna get subzero, but I thought I'd be prepared. No, we'll be un- Nearby. Yeah. [clears throat] Friday it's supposed to be darn close.
• 4:10
If it doesn't- Yep, and then the following week there's the day where it, it... Like, the high is -1, I think. I wanted to try the muck off stuff. But whatever. It's, like, 10 days out or seven days out.
• 4:20
I don't really buy it. Right. They're just trying to freak me out. Yeah. And doing a damn good job. [laughs] I wanted to try that Muck Off, but it said -2.
• 4:28
I'm like, "Well, if it's -3, am I gonna be, am I gonna be hosed or no?" So I think the, uh, Orange, Orange Seals, Peel Seals is good to 20 below or something. It's good. Wow. Pretty cold. Hmm. And, uh- So there's...
• 4:42
I didn't realize there is a difference of temperature with, with the sealing. Apparently so. Yeah. I mean, it's a special- Oh, does it smell like oranges?... Subzero. Eh. [laughs] Get over here.
• 4:56
That said, this not for resale bottle doesn't tell you the exact temperature specs. Don't drink it. I'm gonna smell it. For everyone. That was the Mortal Kombat guy right there.
• 5:06
I don't think it smells a lot like oranges. It's orange colored, but [laughs] it smells- Frankly, it smells like my dog's breath. There... [laughs] I see a new career- That's not good... for your dog.
• 5:19
[laughs] Maybe that's what it is. It's actually dog saliva- [laughs]... that has been bottled. Up-purposed. Well, the Muck Off. Let's- [laughs] Let's, let's, let's smell the Muck Off now. [laughs] Yeah. Oh.
• 5:32
Now we're into these scents. This is not, uh, orange. This is- It's, it's a pretty pink color. Yeah, it's kinda pinkish purple. So Muck Off, man. It's been getting good, uh, good reviews. Oh.
• 5:43
Oh, don't stick your nose, don't stick your nose in there too close. Got a much different smell. Oh, that's much more pleasant though. [laughs] All right. Based on smell and color- Muck Off... Muck Off, baby.
• 5:56
Smells like fluoride treatment from my youth. [laughs] Well, what I've... I, I started kinda spec'ing out my next bike. Like we all do in our dreams and when we're sleeping, going to bed. And, uh,
• 6:11
I'm gonna use this in that. This is gonna be a 27-plus bike. Ah. That'll be muck-offed. I will muck the heck off of that thing. [laughs] Yeah, I, I think I kinda settled on the Chumba Titanium 27-plus Stella. Stella.
• 6:28
Stella. It's my nephew's dog's name, too. Really? Maybe I can get him to buy one. That was my, my first cat. Rest in peace, Stella. Dun, dun. I don't even know if I know a Stella.
• 6:42
[laughs] So, uh, yeah, Chumba makes a ti- Stella Artois Oh, yeah. A br- oh, that's a beer. Yeah, there's like three bars. Stella Artois. Did I do that? [laughs] Did I drink that?
• 6:52
[laughs] Uh, [laughs] so yeah- It's pretty good...
• 6:55
Chu- well, Chumba makes a, uh, they make a steel version, too, and I, I was talking to Vince, the, one of the owners of it, and I s- s- of Chumba, and I said, "Vince, uh, what do you think?"
• 7:05
You know, 'cause they make the steel ones right there in Texas. And he said, "You know, you probably deserve the titanium one." [laughs] To which I said, "I'm pretty sure you're right."
• 7:18
[laughs] Spe- speaking of Chumba, I had, uh, the pleasure of riding the Ursula Major last night on a, uh, ice, very nice ice hockey rink.
• 7:29
Oh, I was gonna ask how the, uh- The People's Rink in beautiful- River, Riverwest People's Ice Rink... in beautiful Riverwest, Wisconsin. Yeah. Um, and, uh, i- it is a...
• 7:40
I, I will just say I never thought a five-inch wide fat tired bike could be judged as nimble. [laughs] Nimble. That bike is nimble.
• 7:51
For such a, a, you know, big tire, you could close your eyes and think you were on a regular old mountain bike. Nice. I will say that the, uh, Dillinger 5s I think are a little more nimble than the Juggernauts. Yeah.
• 8:04
Those Juggernauts got some knobs on them, boy. Yeah, those are some, some vibrate-y tires, that's for sure. But, uh, yeah, the, and, uh, it, there's a decent traction on the ice.
• 8:15
Obviously, the studs do their job because that was about slippery as ice can get. [laughs] But just a super thin- Any- anybody local should go over and check it out.
• 8:22
It's very, very smooth right now, and it's a, oddly enough, a very pretty blue [laughs] watercolor when you shoot a light at it. Yeah, maybe it's the tarp underneath it. Maybe.
• 8:30
It's, it's- [laughs] But it is the smoothest in the eight years that I think they've been doing it that I've seen it. It's like that's glare ice. It's gorgeous. Yeah, yeah.
• 8:41
It was, uh, I, with that thin layer of snow on top of it, it was slickery. Was there, uh, a lot of the, uh, Tuesday night riders that made it? Mm, no. I don't know how many people they normally get on a ride. Yeah.
• 8:55
I think more than that, but that- Sure... it was, it was actively snowing pretty good at that point. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I know they had put out a, a, a call, like a- Yeah...
• 9:03
"Hey, if you're not comfy in this," or even a, the gear- Yeah, don't do it. Yeah. Yeah, they, they- They handled it well. Oh. Well, there's a- They did...
• 9:11
couple, uh, at least one guy on a fixie who was managing to get around it- [laughs] Yeah... without kinda falling too much. He had a front stud and... Right? Is that the same thing?
• 9:19
No, he d- the one, one guy had no studs. Oh. Anthony had studs on his, and he was motoring around pretty good. Yeah. But, uh, we, he, he was- I, I was no studs... he, uh, he made lentil. He did make lentils.
• 9:32
Lenta lentils, to which he referred many times. [laughs] He was trying- I've got lentil. Would you like some lentil in my lentil bowl? There's lentil for you. Lentil. Would you like some?
• 9:41
He was trying to get rid of the lentil. [laughs] Even Mehdi Farsi was trying to scope some lentil. I... No. [laughs] I had some delicious cheese curds later on at Dino's. Ah. Oh, man. They were dope. Greg called it.
• 9:56
I mean, they, they stayed soft. They were, they were very well done. I haven't been there for, uh, a month or two. They changed their, uh, menu twice- Yeah... since you were there, then, I bet. Huh. Okay.
• 10:07
Yeah, I think he's correct because it's quite, um, slimmed down, and I think they may have lowered some prices. And they added a- Except for on the pizza... well, yeah, they added a couple of pizzas where...
• 10:16
They, it used to be Saturdays only for pizzas, and now- Oh, yeah, yeah... they're doing it daily. Oh, right on. Or eveningly, technically. I get you. You know. But yes, they were, they were even better than I expected.
• 10:31
And Dino's makes a pretty decent meal. Oh, yeah. Dig that, man. You know? I know. Oh, but... Yeah. So- I just like that- That was great... I know the burgers are not [laughs] let burger calls win.
• 10:45
Thursday night burger, five bucks. Kinda hard to beat. Oh, yeah. Goat cheese, mushrooms. [growls] They make a pretty mean, um, grim a lotta fry, too, while we're talking about food. [laughs] Getting terribly hungry.
• 10:59
Yeah. You know it. Greg, what you got sitting in the stand here tonight? Well, it's kind of a twofer over there in the stand. They got, uh, Marcus's Rohloff conversion.
• 11:09
He had a, an El Fino on that bike, and now- Uh-huh... it's getting a Rohloff on the Northpaw. And then that's, uh, Poppy's 1985 PK Ripper. Yeah. Twofer. With the straight stays. It's not a looptailer there, hey.
• 11:22
With the- I was just gonna throw some decals on it for him, but they're- They're huge... I think from a more modern roundy tube aluminum bike that they make, and they're a little bigger than he may want on there.
• 11:34
So before I throw them on there, I'm gonna ask him if he wants to reconsider or if there's any others available. Did he have an El Fino 8 or an 11 on that?
• 11:42
Uh, he had an 8, because at that point I was already done with the 11 for fat bikes. Right. Knowing that they don't like to be under-geared and- Yeah...
• 11:51
thrashed about, but the, uh, 8-speed basically didn't have enough range for Marcus, so when it came time to upgrade, the Rohloff was the obvious call. Makes sense. Belt drive, nonetheless. Yeah.
• 12:06
Hopefully it's done tomorrow. Nice. That's my plan. That's my plan. I'm sticking to that plan Stick to that plan. Top of the hill there, Abe. [bell ringing] Ding. Abe- Life is measured by the achieving of goals.
• 12:24
Yeah. All day. Whoa. IPA. [laughs] What the hell? Well, you were contemplating on the coach, weren't you? I guess. I think- Were you writing that shit down while you were on the coach? [laughs] No, I was sparked.
• 12:39
I was watching Jeopardy! too. Wow, Jeopardy! was good this, good tonight. So, while- High score? [clears throat] While this is- 29 grand, huh? Oh, boy.
• 12:47
[laughs] So, this is, uh, while it's alcohol related, it's not beer related. Oh. I just got this, uh, note about, uh, a new rye whiskey coming out from Old Forester. We, that sounds very exciting.
• 13:02
I think we talked about it a little last night. Yeah. I don't know, it just made... It, it... First of all, the price point, 23 bucks. That's- It made me, uh, kind of go, "Yeah, let's check that out."
• 13:12
It's, it's definitely worth a try. It's their first rye whiskey. It's coming out February 1st. I don't know if this is embargoed information or not. Probably not, since I found it on the interwebs.
• 13:21
Is that your fancy flask of Tullamore Dew? Tullamore Dew. Tullamore Dew. Um, so while we wait for February 1st and the Old Forester rye, let's [laughs] let's have a little Tully. [laughs] In the spirit.
• 13:40
Let's talk about these super sexy pedals on the table, too. Uh, yeah. I, ICEs, they're, uh, flats.
• 13:49
What, it kinda got me into it was the, the composite one because they didn't have a lower price point pedal for a while, and I've been kinda looking for one for just knock about pedals, and that one, it's, like, 40 bucks retail.
• 14:02
It's really not bad. Very lightweight, too. Yeah, and unlike the more expensive, fancier aluminum one that has the re-buildable spindle and bearings and all, that's actually got pedal flats on the composite one.
• 14:14
The other one, like, what's with nobody, what's with no pedal flats? Yeah. Come on, now. I like pedal flats. I just, I guess I don't mind using an Allen wrench, but- But-...
• 14:26
lack of maintenance on bikes at certain times makes that a little tough to get out of there. [laughs] You can carry an adjustable wrench fairly easily that- Ah... can get a pedal off. Yep.
• 14:36
You may not always be carrying a, a- I guess they figure people spending-... five millimeter... 115 bucks on pedals are gonna take better care of them- Yeah... than people spending 40 bucks. I suppose.
• 14:46
That's what I'm saying. I, I, I'm not. [laughs] That, that said, uh, so the aluminum one's got a really big platform. That thing is huge, man. Yeah. It is massive.
• 14:55
And the other pedal comes in two different sizes, so if you're up to size nine, they got a littler one, and, uh, if they're up to bigger than that, they got a bigger one.
• 15:03
Is that the one that was the stretchy, like, the, like, almost rectangular? Nope. Okay. That's these crazy things over here somewhere. [laughs] These also could easily accept a strap.
• 15:14
A, you know, a, uh- Oh, a power grip?... power, you know, uh, either... Well, not a power... Well, maybe a power grip, but the, the other ones that all the, that all the messengers ride. Mod hip kids?
• 15:25
Yeah, those, those hipsters. Hmm. I don't know if I'd- Not there's anything wrong with that... be strapped in there. Strapped on, yes. Strapped in, not so much. Strap on. [laughs] Strap on.
• 15:35
That's exactly what I was thinking. [laughs] Strap on. Oh. Strap. Damn it, I'm starting to think like Mike. The strapper. Starting to think like Mike. [laughs] That's, that's- My name Mike. I like bike.
• 15:48
And take a hike with my bike. All right. [laughs] Oh, boy, this thing's gone downhill quickly, as most fat bikes do. Yeah.
• 15:59
Uh, speaking of going down quickly, uh, I'm gonna be going down to Nevada to Las Vegas again for a couple of weeks, and Tony's gonna be, uh- Oh, yeah... Tony's gonna be your store jockey there for a few hours
• 16:11
while I'm gone, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. If you happen to be in Milwaukee, swing by and say hi to Tony- Bye, Seth... in Everyday Cycles shop. Bye. What's the address here again? I don't know. What is it again?
• 16:22
826 East Locust Street. 826 East Locust. Beautiful River West. 53212. With approximately 15 inches of snow on the ground. [laughs] Gorgeous.
• 16:35
Uh, when I get back from Vegas mid, mid-February, I'm planning on going where they really got snow to Marquette, Michigan. Do some riding. That will be- And maybe Hayward.
• 16:47
On, probably not on the same trip, maybe alternate, uh, weekends. That's, that's a good drive. Yeah, I know. Anybody wants to go, I think the weekend that I... Actually, the 16th.
• 16:59
I get back on the 11th, and the 16th I think is Polar Roll, so that's a big one up there. Big race in Marquette. Yeah. It's long one, too, isn't it? I think it's usually around 30 miles, give or take.
• 17:12
I'm pretty sure Chad and Dave are signed up for it, so that would be something those guys might do. Huh. I'd like to ride. I'm not sure about that racing business. All right. [laughs] And speaking of Dave and Chad,
• 17:26
have they called in to the number, which is 717-727-2453? They, they have not. Called in. That's 7- Slacker... 17727 bike, not Mike. Bike. Yeah, I'm on- Or hike. Bike... I got this, uh, fancy
• 17:45
Paragon Machine Works dropout for the slider. I have said same one at home, actually. With the roll-off, uh- Oh, now with the roll-off. Oh. It's got the OE roll-off slot on it. Mm.
• 17:55
And now, I don't know if you have an older one, but now they say PMW made in the USA right on them. It's got it etched right in there or machined. I believe mine does have that. Yeah, the older ones didn't have that,
• 18:11
but now they do, so you know, they, they got that going for them. Which is good Which is good for them. Hey, how about that book right there? This is something, while you're sitting here, you should just check this out.
• 18:23
Dialed. Yeah, it's, uh, Lee McCormack. He's a guy that does bike fittings and stuff, and he's got a, kind of a different way to... Especially if you're setting out to shred a little bit,
• 18:33
on how to get your bike kinda set up el perfecto. Frankly, it makes a lot of sense to me, and I measured my ape just to see how close I was. Pretty close, 'cause I kind of got a decent idea what I like already.
• 18:47
Um, I run a little narrower bar than he might suggest, but then I'm super old school that way. I don't like super wide bars. Well- Like I'm on a Harley... yeah, that said- I'm on a Yamaha Harley...
• 18:59
I mean, like the, the stock bars that are on that- So heavy... Northpaw over there, those are, like, 840s or something. But they're certainly, you can cut them down, and- Right...
• 19:06
that's kind of his point is you don't have to ride them. That's, like, for a 6'5" guy, it's like a... You know, that's appropriate. But- So you're height. Yeah. Yeah. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah.
• 19:17
No, I'm in the 740 camp right now. That's my, that's my zone. That said, I think I've ridden them as narrow as, like, maybe, I don't know, what's this? 200 millimeters.
• 19:28
[laughs] [laughs] That, that, that's fixie, fixie width. On a mountain bike, though, like a- Yeah... with a 150 millimeter stem. Hey, you get through trees that way. Yeah, for sure. That's one time- You know?...
• 19:38
I hooked a tree on the, on the, uh, Tosa Trails and ended up in the river because I was riding wider bars than I normally do.
• 19:44
[laughs] And I'm just used to being able to squeak by with, like, you know, a half an inch or an inch there. No, a little bit of extra sort of just hooked the handlebar and ring, ring, ring, ring, ring.
• 19:53
I, I yard saleled hard during a race once because my bars were too wide. It happens. You can catch more air. I understand the reason why you do it, but I [laughs] cut mine down an inch or two. Cut mine down.
• 20:06
That's what he said. Even if it's carbon, I cut it down. I got those, uh, fancy tires back there, too, now. Did you see those, uh- Yeah, these-... Terrav, Terravail, Terravails? Mm. Terravail.
• 20:18
You got some lighter weight ones and then some more heavy duty. I think that's a decent idea. I'm not sure if it's a marketing- Duty... ploy- [laughs] I see what you did... or not, but I think, uh, yeah, they're...
• 20:29
The lighter ones are 300 grams lighter than the durable ones, so those are the Corinados, folks. That's gonna be my summer tire right there. I believe you used the term supple.
• 20:40
Yes, light and supple is right on the tag, so. Yeah. Supple. That is a good thing. Moist. [laughs] Mike is petting the tire. Yes. And it's clearly... Oh. Uh-oh. No. No, no. We don't- Too far, too far...
• 20:57
you don't lick tires- Too far... you lick pedals. [laughs] The pedal looks like a lollipop. It's all purple and- It is. That's a-... grapey flavored... pretty pedal. Well, uh,
• 21:09
this is gonna be one of those, uh, episodes that we got, as they say, in the can, so we'll actually be putting this up in a couple of weeks. So. Maybe while Greg's still in lost wages. Yeah, probably.
• 21:23
I'm j- was just trying to figure out when the next time we're gonna actually do a show. Uh, it's coming up right after I get back, I think. I don't know. So. Yeah, you, when are you getting back? What date?
• 21:32
Like, Monday or Tuesday? I get back on the 11th of February. Yeah. Which would be a Monday, so. You were another third- Where are we at now? We're on the- Oh, I think it-... on the 23rd. Mm-hmm, hmm.
• 21:45
I got a thing on that Wednesday. So let's see here. We're gonna have one then. We're gonna have one on the 8th. So our, our next, our next, so we're gonna have one on the 25th,
• 21:55
this coming Friday, which is last, last week's show. [laughs] This one will be on the 8th and then the 22nd, so the 20th of- Yeah. Right on...
• 22:04
February will be our, our next opportunity to actually get some call-in callers at, uh, 717- 727... 727-2453. That's 717-727-BIKE. I'll probably line, line something up maybe.
• 22:19
Yeah, maybe we should line, line something up for that. Eh. All right. Any, any parting thoughts there, Hay? Safe travels. Rubber side down. Uh, say bye. Bye. Bye. So long farewell, I'll be just saying goodbye.
• 22:37
I hate to leave, and b- b- b- bye. [upbeat music] Do, do, lo, do, do, do, do, do, lo, do, do, do.
• 22:44
  [upbeat music]
