- 9:52:52Welcome to the City Center
- 9:52:53Podcast. I'm Jerry Marcello.
- 9:52:55We have a very special podcast for you
- 9:52:57today. We've left the TV18
- 9:52:59studios and we are on location
- 9:53:00here at the Mandel Public Library. We're
- 9:53:03very excited to be here.
- 9:53:05This library is unique in
- 9:53:07so many ways. We're going to be exploring
- 9:53:09all the things that make
- 9:53:10this place different, special,
- 9:53:13and the jewel for the city of West Palm
- 9:53:15Beach. Joining me today is
- 9:53:17Lisa Hathaway, the director
- 9:53:19of the library. Lisa, welcome. Thank you.
- 9:53:21I'm happy to be here.
- 9:53:22Well, we're happy to be,
- 9:53:23we're excited to be here on our first
- 9:53:25location shoot for our
- 9:53:26podcast. Listen, Mandel is,
- 9:53:30the public library here is so special and
- 9:53:32so different. People
- 9:53:35don't realize that it's here,
- 9:53:37that it has all the features that it has.
- 9:53:41What do you think makes
- 9:53:43this library, what it is,
- 9:53:45so unique for the city? Well, first, I
- 9:53:48would like to give a shout out to my
- 9:53:49staff. They are actually
- 9:53:50what makes this place so unique. They are
- 9:53:52so invested in this
- 9:53:54community and the patrons that
- 9:53:56visit our library and they are the brains
- 9:53:59behind a lot of the amazing
- 9:54:00programs and opportunities
- 9:54:02that we provide for the community that
- 9:54:05come to visit this library.
- 9:54:07So any day you could walk in
- 9:54:09and there could be 10 programs going on
- 9:54:11from your typical story time
- 9:54:13for children to yoga for adults
- 9:54:15or learning how to create your own
- 9:54:17podcast. So we try to really take a look
- 9:54:21at our community and
- 9:54:22understand what their needs are and what
- 9:54:24their wants are. And that's
- 9:54:26what we try to fulfill here
- 9:54:27every day at our library. Now this
- 9:54:30beautiful building is what
- 9:54:32about 10 years old? 10, 12 years
- 9:54:34old? About 15 years old. About 15 years
- 9:54:36old. But the library has
- 9:54:38existed here in West Palm Beach
- 9:54:39since West Palm Beach existed. Yes, since
- 9:54:411895. This library started
- 9:54:44off in a small reading room
- 9:54:46in one of the first churches in the city,
- 9:54:49I believe off of the tourist
- 9:54:50street. And then from there,
- 9:54:53it was called the Little Free Reading
- 9:54:54Room. Then it moved over to
- 9:54:56the Palm Beach Yacht Club.
- 9:54:57And then in 1962, an actual modern day
- 9:55:00building was built on the
- 9:55:01waterfront. And now we're in this
- 9:55:04beautiful facility, two and a half times
- 9:55:05larger, to really provide the
- 9:55:09items that people would love
- 9:55:12to see in a public library. When I first
- 9:55:15came to West Palm Beach as a
- 9:55:17young lad, oh probably about
- 9:55:191970, I went to that library on on on uh
- 9:55:24Clamatus. It was cavernous,
- 9:55:27it was very big, it was a nice
- 9:55:29facility. But there was a sense of you
- 9:55:31went there to get a book and
- 9:55:33then you left. And then you
- 9:55:35brought back your book. You didn't
- 9:55:36actually spend a huge amount of time
- 9:55:38there. It was just not that
- 9:55:39sort of facility. I think that's what
- 9:55:41makes this place so special.
- 9:55:43Yes, so what we are trying to
- 9:55:45do here at our library is it's more than
- 9:55:48books. We want to create a
- 9:55:51collaborative environment for
- 9:55:53people. I think many of us know,
- 9:55:55especially during COVID, kind of we're
- 9:55:57caught at home on our computers.
- 9:55:59We want to bring back people back into
- 9:56:01the community. We want to
- 9:56:02create shared experiences
- 9:56:04for individuals. And maybe it's coming in
- 9:56:07and checking out a
- 9:56:10bird-watching kit so you and your
- 9:56:12family can go to then a state park.
- 9:56:14Everything we're doing is trying to
- 9:56:16create shared experiences
- 9:56:17for individuals that have some connection
- 9:56:20obviously to literacy
- 9:56:22as well. And that's our
- 9:56:24goal is to bring the community together.
- 9:56:26You mentioned the
- 9:56:27pandemic. Did it have a negative
- 9:56:30effect on people coming? It did. Well we
- 9:56:34had to be closed for a
- 9:56:35little while. So we pivoted as
- 9:56:36library staff and created new ways to
- 9:56:38bring the library into
- 9:56:39people's homes through YouTube,
- 9:56:42story times, dropping off books to
- 9:56:45people's homes, and then
- 9:56:46creating something called a
- 9:56:47Mandel Mobile, which is our green minivan
- 9:56:49on wheels that goes out into our local
- 9:56:51parks and communities.
- 9:56:54Does that still exist or something? It
- 9:56:55does still exist and we're at three of
- 9:56:57our local parks here
- 9:56:58in the city of West Palm Beach. And so we
- 9:57:01learned a lot from COVID
- 9:57:02and now because of that we're
- 9:57:04doing more outreach. We're doing more to
- 9:57:06go into the community as
- 9:57:08a library and COVID was
- 9:57:11somewhat inspiring for us because now
- 9:57:13we're doing more I feel as a public
- 9:57:16entity for our community.
- 9:57:18You use the term pivoted. You basically
- 9:57:19sort of recreated how
- 9:57:21people use the library during
- 9:57:23the period of time and there have been
- 9:57:24benefits because of that.
- 9:57:26Exactly. Long lasting. Very long
- 9:57:28lasting. Now we have a family social
- 9:57:30worker here at our library so individuals
- 9:57:32can get the additional
- 9:57:34resources and help they need just by
- 9:57:36visiting the library. So maybe you're
- 9:57:37coming in to check out a
- 9:57:39book and you're struggling. Guess what?
- 9:57:42We have a social worker here that will
- 9:57:43speak to you and help
- 9:57:44you connect to the resources. We provide
- 9:57:46free diapers here at the
- 9:57:48library. We have built a lot
- 9:57:49of collaborative relationships because of
- 9:57:52COVID. We have the food bank here. We
- 9:57:55have career resource
- 9:57:57here. Just so many opportunities for
- 9:57:59people to come into the library as a
- 9:58:00community gathering place
- 9:58:02to check out their favorite book but then
- 9:58:04also maybe solve a problem
- 9:58:06that they have in their life.
- 9:58:08With the idea of the community gathering
- 9:58:10place as you describe it,
- 9:58:11is that something that is
- 9:58:13pervasive through libraries throughout
- 9:58:14the country? Is that
- 9:58:15something special here?
- 9:58:16I would like to say it's something
- 9:58:17special here but as librarians, I'd like
- 9:58:21to call us superheroes,
- 9:58:23throughout the country we are really
- 9:58:25embracing helping our
- 9:58:27community above and beyond literacy.
- 9:58:30And so libraries are seen as safe places
- 9:58:32for people and so because
- 9:58:34we're safe, let's have the
- 9:58:35resources here for them. Almost like a
- 9:58:37one-stop shop. Wow. Okay so
- 9:58:39we are here on the fourth floor
- 9:58:41of the library obviously. There's three
- 9:58:43others. Tell us a little bit
- 9:58:44about what people will find
- 9:58:45when they come here. What sort of
- 9:58:47features, what sort of services can they
- 9:58:49find? So when you walk
- 9:58:50into the library on the first floor it
- 9:58:52was kind of designed around a bookstore
- 9:58:54if you guys remember
- 9:58:55bookstores. And so you walk in and all of
- 9:58:58the newest books are
- 9:58:59available for you to check out
- 9:59:01as well as an amazing coffee shop,
- 9:59:04Solento's, Best Coffee in West Palm
- 9:59:06Beach. If you head up to the
- 9:59:07second floor that's our teen floor where
- 9:59:09our teens can hang out. We've got an
- 9:59:11amazing technology and
- 9:59:12innovation center where you can learn how
- 9:59:14to podcast, you can
- 9:59:15convert your old VHS tapes,
- 9:59:17you can create anything that you would
- 9:59:20like. We have a 3D printer
- 9:59:21as well. Our studio is there
- 9:59:23for programming, art programming
- 9:59:25specifically, where you can
- 9:59:27take free art classes and then
- 9:59:28there's career resources available on
- 9:59:30that floor. And let me pay
- 9:59:32you a little compliment here.
- 9:59:34We visited your podcast booth and that
- 9:59:38equipment feels like that
- 9:59:40four or five years ago. You guys
- 9:59:41are on the cutting edge of really jumping
- 9:59:43in on that. That's something that's
- 9:59:44really special about
- 9:59:46what we do here. Thank you. Again, back
- 9:59:47to staff. They know what the
- 9:59:50trends are. They know what our
- 9:59:51community wants and we reached out to our
- 9:59:53West Palm Beach Library
- 9:59:54Foundation and they found the
- 9:59:55funds for us to purchase a podcasting
- 9:59:57booth. If you go to the third
- 9:59:59floor, if I can continue about
- 10:00:01all the floors, that's our children's
- 10:00:02floor, which is the most vibrant space
- 10:00:05where we let children
- 10:00:06be children. It's not a shushing floor.
- 10:00:09It's a floor where kids
- 10:00:10can experience hip hop. They
- 10:00:12can experience their own yoga classes,
- 10:00:15story times, homework help, and they're
- 10:00:17surrounded by some of
- 10:00:18the best librarians that you can find.
- 10:00:20And then this floor, the
- 10:00:21fourth floor, is our grand reading
- 10:00:23room. And this is where you can find the
- 10:00:25bulk of our collection. You
- 10:00:27can talk to our professional
- 10:00:28librarians that can help you with
- 10:00:29research or they can just help
- 10:00:31you find a phone number you're
- 10:00:32looking for. And this is just a wonderful
- 10:00:35quiet space that gives you that
- 10:00:36traditional library feel,
- 10:00:39which is what libraries still want to
- 10:00:41provide to our public, but we
- 10:00:44also want people to have fun.
- 10:00:45Right. And folks at home can see over our
- 10:00:49shoulder how beautiful
- 10:00:50this particular space is.
- 10:00:51It's actually more beautiful when you
- 10:00:53come here, guys. So if you get the
- 10:00:54chance, absolutely come,
- 10:00:56enjoy all the floors, but fourth floor is
- 10:00:59absolutely spectacular.
- 10:01:00Beautiful views, these
- 10:01:01two huge cathedral style windows here on
- 10:01:04either side, just a really
- 10:01:06amazing place. Thank you.
- 10:01:08So you've mentioned events. Events is a
- 10:01:10very big part. It's how we
- 10:01:11bring people into the library
- 10:01:13and get involved. And I just wanted to
- 10:01:15show this to folks. I'm
- 10:01:16going to go ahead and show
- 10:01:16this on my camera here. This is a booklet
- 10:01:19for every month that
- 10:01:21the library has. All their
- 10:01:22events are listed here and this is
- 10:01:24available to folks at home,
- 10:01:25right? Yes, definitely. You can
- 10:01:27actually access it online. You can come
- 10:01:29into the library and get a
- 10:01:30copy, but we average probably
- 10:01:34close to 150 programs a month. And again,
- 10:01:38I've talked a little bit
- 10:01:39about it, but we have free
- 10:01:40art classes. We have yoga, we have baby
- 10:01:43story time. We have, like
- 10:01:45I said, learn how to do a
- 10:01:46podcasting. We've got book talks with
- 10:01:48lectures, really about
- 10:01:50anything you can think of. We try
- 10:01:52to hit here as well as we have started
- 10:01:55introducing something called library of
- 10:01:56things. And this will
- 10:01:59be rolling out on our website soon, but
- 10:02:01we have things like ghost
- 10:02:02hunting kits. You want to go
- 10:02:04find a ghost in your house? Guess what?
- 10:02:06We have a kit you can
- 10:02:06check out. I talked about bird
- 10:02:09watching kits. We actually have a GoPro
- 10:02:11kit. We have a ukulele you
- 10:02:14can check out. We even have
- 10:02:15fishing poles that you can check out
- 10:02:17because we want people to experience
- 10:02:20maybe things that they
- 10:02:21will never get a chance to experience.
- 10:02:22And you can check it out here and it's
- 10:02:24all completely free.
- 10:02:25That is fantastic. So, all right. So
- 10:02:28we've mentioned getting more information,
- 10:02:30going to see the website. Tell us about
- 10:02:33the website. How do people get there?
- 10:02:34Okay. So our website is
- 10:02:36WPBCityLibrary.org. Just go on there.
- 10:02:40It's very easy, very interactive.
- 10:02:42That's actually where our card catalog
- 10:02:43is. Member card catalogs back
- 10:02:44in the day. Now they're online
- 10:02:46and you can search for your books there.
- 10:02:48You can search for all of
- 10:02:49our programs there as well.
- 10:02:50You can even book a study room from our
- 10:02:53website as well to use at the
- 10:02:55library at your convenience.
- 10:02:57Or you can give us a call at 561-868-7701
- 10:03:01to speak to a real
- 10:03:02librarian, which is not always easy
- 10:03:05in this world, but you will get either a
- 10:03:07phone call back or they
- 10:03:08will answer you live. And then
- 10:03:11you can always walk into our library.
- 10:03:13We're at 411 Klamadah
- 10:03:14Street. We've got great parking.
- 10:03:17We will validate your parking for free by
- 10:03:19coming in and using the
- 10:03:20library. So don't worry about
- 10:03:22parking. We've got you covered. That is
- 10:03:24fantastic. A place has
- 10:03:26everything. You can rent or you can
- 10:03:28check out a fishbowl. Well, not yet, but
- 10:03:32that gives me a good
- 10:03:32idea. Yeah, I mean, it's just,
- 10:03:35it's just fantastic. Let's take a moment
- 10:03:39and give you the mic and you
- 10:03:41have an opportunity here to
- 10:03:42say what you feel is the most important
- 10:03:45message to deliver to people
- 10:03:46at home. What would you say
- 10:03:48to folks about what you do here and what
- 10:03:51your staff does every
- 10:03:52day? So I think what's really
- 10:03:54important to understand is libraries are
- 10:03:57the cornerstone of our
- 10:03:59democracy, our society. We
- 10:04:02are here as a safe space for you to find
- 10:04:05the most important and
- 10:04:08valid and correct information.
- 10:04:10But we're also a space for you to come
- 10:04:14together as a family, as
- 10:04:17friends, or to meet new people.
- 10:04:19So staff, we have a unique job to kind of
- 10:04:23hit all of those key
- 10:04:25areas and it's so much fun.
- 10:04:28It's inspiring to see the people coming
- 10:04:30in to use our library. It's
- 10:04:32inspiring to see the change
- 10:04:33that comes from them. Maybe they came in
- 10:04:35and we updated the
- 10:04:37resume and now they have a job
- 10:04:39or they've created their first video log
- 10:04:42and for their new business.
- 10:04:44We want to inspire people to
- 10:04:47come here and be the very best that they
- 10:04:49can be. And that's what we
- 10:04:51strive for every day. And I
- 10:04:52know all public libraries, that's their
- 10:04:54role. We're here for people in any
- 10:04:58capacity you can think of
- 10:04:59quite frankly. That's fantastic. And what
- 10:05:02we've talked about today,
- 10:05:03and we can hear the train
- 10:05:05just across the way going and we're right
- 10:05:07downtown everybody. It's a
- 10:05:09really great, vibrant place to
- 10:05:11be. And the library is a focal point for
- 10:05:13that vibrant quality. We
- 10:05:15see people coming in and out
- 10:05:16all day long enjoying the things that you
- 10:05:19provide to the city. It's
- 10:05:20truly a jewel. So thank you to
- 10:05:22you and to your staff for everything you
- 10:05:25do here at the Mandel Public Library.
- 10:05:27Thank you. And thank
- 10:05:28you for joining us for this very special
- 10:05:30podcast from the Mandel
- 10:05:32Public Library. My name is Jerry
- 10:05:34Marcello. We'll see you very soon.
