- 0:53[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you so much for joining me once again today.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_00]: This week on the Broadcast, we've been hearing from a friend of mine.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_00]: His name is Matt Payne, and Brother Payne does a wonderful job unpacking so many scriptures from the Gospels about how Jesus prayed.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: Now, if you missed Monday in Tuesday's broadcast, don't go anywhere, I want you to listen right now, but maybe after the broadcast, at some point today, you'd like to go back and find the archive diversion.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: You can find it on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcast.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_00]: just search for Bible Tract Echoes or Bible Tracts Incorporated, and you'll find yesterday's and Monday's broadcast today as we jump in, we're jumping into the middle of this message that Matt Payne preached, and he's talking about how Jesus reacted after he heard that John the Baptist
- 1:47[SPEAKER_00]: died.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_00]: What a sad thing it was for him to lose not only relative, but a dear friend, a co-laborer in the service of God the Father.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_00]: And how did Jesus respond to that?
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: Well, let's also ask the question how did Jesus pray?
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: I want you to listen with open ears and soft tarts as we endeavor to strengthen this in most Christian life a very weak area.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_00]: This weak area of prayer.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: It shouldn't be.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: We should be like Jesus and pray more.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_00]: So let's find out how Jesus prayed.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: Listen now to Matt Payne.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_02]: And his disciples came and took up the body and buried it and went and told Jesus.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_02]: And when
- 2:30[SPEAKER_02]: He departed fence by ship into a desert place apart.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_02]: And when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_02]: And Jesus went forth and saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion toward them.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_02]: And he healed their sick, skipped down to verse number 33.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_02]: 23, the same chapter.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_02]: And when he had sent the multitude away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_02]: And when the evening was come, he was there alone.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_02]: the disciples of John, come and tell Jesus, what's the first thing Jesus says?
- 3:04[SPEAKER_02]: I need to get away from all these people and get a loan with God.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_02]: He's interrupted on the way, and he feeds the 5,000 there, break his abricks, the fishes in the red, and feeds the 5,000, performs that miracle.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_02]: Then what does he do?
- 3:17[SPEAKER_02]: Goes to the mountaineer price.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_02]: You know, Jesus gave us an example.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_02]: There's a time when people, when you are in a great loss, there's nothing you can do, but get a loan with God.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_02]: So Jesus said, you know what, I need to get away.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_02]: I need to get alone away from these people, so I can pray.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_02]: So I can heal.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_02]: You know, Jesus, even though Jesus was God, Jesus still hurt.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_02]: Jesus still felt the informities that we feel.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_02]: John was his friend.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_02]: You see, later in the Gospels where Lazarus dies, Jesus weeps over him.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_02]: Jesus loved him.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_02]: And Bible says, he hurt.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_02]: You know, sometimes we do one of two things with grief.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_02]: You either totally gloss over and say forget it, it's not worth it and you just, you don't acknowledge it.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_02]: You haven't really dealt with it or you deal with it and never get out of it.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_02]: both are wrong.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_02]: At some point, you've got to stop and realize, no, I need to grieve, but at the same time, I also need help getting over.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_02]: I need God to get me through it.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_02]: Jesus said, you know what?
- 4:20[SPEAKER_02]: My best thing I can do is get alone.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_02]: Get away from these people, spend some time with God.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_02]: Why?
- 4:24[SPEAKER_02]: Because he was hurt.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_02]: He knew John was in heaven, okay?
- 4:28[SPEAKER_02]: I know he's Jesus, but I think that's in the Bible on purpose.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_02]: God doesn't expect us to just go through things and act like nothing's wrong.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_02]: Nothing's gonna happen.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_02]: You're not made out of granite.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, as much as we like people to think that, it doesn't faze me, it does faze you.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_02]: They just affect you in a different way than somebody else because of your personality.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_02]: Jesus said, no, I'm gonna get alone.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_02]: And spend some time in prayer to deal with the loss, to deal with the grief that has come as a result.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_02]: But in the midst of his grief, he stopped and said, do you know what I can have compassion on these people too?
- 5:02[SPEAKER_02]: Sometimes if we're not careful when we're hurting nobody else matters.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_02]: Well I'm hurting so you're just going to have to suck it up and live with it till I get better.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_02]: Because I'm sorry but I can't help you because I'm hurting.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_02]: That's a natural, fleshly response but that's not the way that Jesus wants us to respond.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_02]: Jesus said, look I need to recover, I need to heal and all you people want is for me to do something amazing.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_02]: You really don't have any, you really don't care what I have to say.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_02]: He wasn't blind to what they wanted.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_02]: They wanted to see him do a miracle.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_02]: That's why they followed him.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_02]: So what does he do?
- 5:34[SPEAKER_02]: He stops and teaches them and tries to teach them the Bible.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_02]: And then he says, here, I have some compassion and feed you also.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_02]: And then he goes alone in praise.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_02]: Just because we need to be alone doesn't mean that it's going to happen.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_02]: But it doesn't mean I should stop and say, well, it's not worth I'll just gloss over it and live on this side.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_02]: Now,
- 5:57[SPEAKER_02]: No, he's still stopped in doubt with it.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_02]: But Jesus prayer life, he got alone with God when dealing with grief.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_02]: Look over it and mark Matthew chapter 26.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_02]: Matthew chapter 26.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_02]: Matthew 26 and verse number 39.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_02]: Matthew chapter 26 verse 39 it says this and he went a little further and fell in his face and prayed saying oh my father if it be possible let this cup pass from me never the less not as I will but as thou will and he come with unto the disciples and find them asleep and sayeth unto Peter what could you now watch with me one hour watch and pray that she entered not into temptation this beard indeed is willing but the flesh is weak
- 6:52[SPEAKER_02]: He went away again the second time and prayed, saying, oh my father, if this cup may not pass away from me except I drink it, I will be done.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_02]: And he came again and found them asleep again for their eyes were heavy.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_02]: And he left them in one away again and prayed the third time saying the same words in Mark chapter 14 and Luke chapter 22, I record the same instance again.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_02]: Jesus in the Garden of Gassemony, he took us disciples with him and he said, you pray, but I need to get a loan and pray some more.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_02]: And he goes and he specifically asked God to take away the cup that was in front of him.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_02]: But he also said, Lord, your will be done.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_02]: There's a difference between demanding that God gives me something and asking for God to do as well, even though I know what I want.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_02]: Throughout the Scripture, the Bible tells us to praise specifically.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_02]: Praise specifically for what we need, praise specifically for what we want.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_02]: It's not an uncommon thing to do, it's a Lord.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_02]: I need this specific thing where I want this desired outcome.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_02]: That's not the problem.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_02]: Jesus said, I'd rather not die on the cross.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_02]: I'd rather not take the sins of the world upon myself, but you know it's best.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_02]: And sometimes if we're not careful, we pray, Lord, your will be done and we don't pray anything specific.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_02]: We pray this generic, God, your will be done in this situation rather than saying, no Lord, this is how I want this to turn out.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_02]: But I also know that I may not understand your perfect will, so give me your perfect will.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_02]: If the Son of God had to stop and say, Lord, this is what I want, but I also know what you want is more important.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_02]: So you do what's right, but I'm still gonna tell you what it is that my heart's desire is, what my want is.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_02]: We have to be cautious.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_02]: You say, why do you stop and say that because that's me?
- 8:42[SPEAKER_02]: Because my pendulum swings that way too, a guard, Lord, I want this, and I don't get exactly what I'm praying for because it's not the time for it, or maybe that's not what I really need, because what I want is it doesn't line up with what God knows I need, but I'm not asking for his will.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just praying belligerently that I get exactly what I'm asking for, and then other times I come over here and say, Lord, whatever you want is fine, I'll just, whatever, I'll take it, when your kid goes to the go to the fast food restaurant and like, what do you want to eat?
- 9:07[SPEAKER_02]: I don't care, just order me something.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_02]: Liar!
- 9:13[SPEAKER_02]: You know they want something specific.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_02]: They just don't want to tell you.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_02]: You know, guys, doesn't have an liar.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_02]: You know what you want?
- 9:22[SPEAKER_02]: Ask for it.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_02]: Ask for it.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_02]: But at the same time, be humble enough to say, Lord, this is what I really want.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_02]: But I want your will too.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_02]: So if this is not in line with your will, I'll take your will over what I want.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_02]: For Jesus, this meant a lot of suffering.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_02]: For Jesus, this meant a lot of hatred poured out on him.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_02]: For Jesus, this meant God turning his back upon him.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_02]: But he said, you know what?
- 9:47[SPEAKER_02]: This is what I want, but I want your will, also.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_02]: In John chapter 11, look there real fast.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_02]: John chapter number 11, Dean willing to pray for God's will while still asking for what it is that you need or desire.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_02]: And verse number 22, I was looking at verse number 21, first.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_02]: John 11, verse number 21.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_02]: It says, then said, Martha on to Jesus, Lord, if thou had been here, my brother had not died, but I know that even now whatsoever, thou will ask of God, God will give it thee.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_02]: And I think His disciples finally asked Jesus to teach him how to pray because they realize the same thing Martha realized.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_02]: Whatever Jesus asked God for happens,
- 10:38[SPEAKER_02]: And I want to know how he does that, so that I can have that.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_02]: Martha said, I know you could have stopped him from dying, I know you could have healed him, but I also know that whatever you ask God for is going to give you.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_02]: All the miracles that Jesus performed is because God allowed him to do them.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_02]: God gave him the power to do so.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_02]: Winner.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_02]: When you need something,
- 11:07[SPEAKER_02]: It's prayer, your first option, when people want somebody to pray for them, do they consider asking you to pray or do your name not come up in their mind at all?
- 11:20[SPEAKER_02]: Martha knew what Jesus could do when he stopped and asked God for something.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_02]: So therefore she said that, God, whatever you ask the Father, I know He's going to give it to you.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_02]: You know, there's been men of God in history that have been feared simply because people knew, if that guy prays against you, it's over.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_02]: Because that guy has a relationship with God to such a degree that what he asks for God does.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_02]: That power was not limited to Jesus.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_02]: We're gonna look at that here in John chapter 14, just a few pages over, looking John chapter 14.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_02]: That power to get our prayers answered was not limited to just Jesus.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_02]: Jesus did not come to show us an example that we couldn't follow.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_02]: He came to give us an example that we could pattern our lives after John chapter 14.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_02]: Verse number 12, it says, fairly, very, I say unto you, He that believeeth on thee, the works that I do shall he do also and greater works than thee shall he do, because I go into my father.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_02]: And what's so every ask in my name that will I do?
- 12:18[SPEAKER_02]: That the Father may be glorified in the sun.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_02]: Verse number 12, He specifically tells them,
- 12:24[SPEAKER_02]: that the works that I do, he shall do also, and greater works than the shall he do.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_02]: Jesus didn't leave us and say, all the powers leaving with me.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_02]: Quite the opposite.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_02]: He said, everything that you saw me do, you can do.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_02]: In fact, you can do greater than what you saw me do.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_02]: If you ask, many times our prayer life is hindered because we don't actually ask.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_02]: We don't ask.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_02]: We don't ask God for the big things because we don't ask God for the small things.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_02]: And we don't ask God for the little things.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_02]: We don't even think to ask about the big things because we haven't built the relationship up.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_02]: But we're constantly asking God, hey, I need help with this thing.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_02]: I need help with this thing.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_02]: I need your answer to prayer in this.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_02]: I need your answer to prayer in this.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_02]: When we get to those monumental things where you have this dream, this idea of what God could do, when whatever the situation might be, who happens?
- 13:21[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm not gonna pray about that.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_02]: No, God says, if I did it, you can do it.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_02]: And not only that, you can do greater.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_02]: I think too many times we fall short of what God wants us to achieve because we never stop and ask for it.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_00]: I love the question that Matt asked in there.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_00]: Would anyone ask you if they needed prayer?
- 13:42[SPEAKER_00]: Would anyone ask me if they needed prayer?
- 13:45[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's convicting.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_00]: Join us again tomorrow as Matt Payne continues this study on prayer.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_00]: Have a great day for his glory.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_00]: God bless.
