- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hey, welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17Today we are in Isaiah chapter 32 and this is one of those
- 0:24mostly good news chapters of the book of Isaiah as Isaiah looking
- 0:31at the corrupt nation that he is in the southern Kingdom of Judah
- 0:37and the northern Kingdom of Israel.
- 0:39That though they were supposed to be the people of God, chosen
- 0:43for the purpose of being the family that would bring forth
- 0:47the Messiah and show all of the world what God was like, they
- 0:53were not living anything like what God had called them to.
- 0:57And instead they were living just like all of the other
- 1:00nations around them. So there was judgment that was
- 1:02going to be coming. We'll see even a little bit of
- 1:04that in today's chapter. But there was going to come that
- 1:08future day when all of God's promises would come true, where
- 1:13Jerusalem, the capital city of that southern Kingdom of Judah,
- 1:17would experience new life as God had intended for it to
- 1:22experience. As as we saw all the way back in
- 1:24chapter 2, with that new Jerusalem where God lives in and
- 1:29among His people, and where all of the nations of the world,
- 1:32instead of them consistently trying to destroy each other and
- 1:36destroy Israel and Judah, they would seek the Lord's wisdom and
- 1:41the Lord's way. And so that's the kind of
- 1:44picture we're going to be looking at today in chapter 32,
- 1:49chapter 32, and verse #1 reads this.
- 1:52Indeed, a king will reign righteously, and rulers will
- 1:57rule justly. Who is this a king who is going
- 2:01to reign righteously? Well, certainly we can think of
- 2:03Jesus, the King of kings and the Lord of Lords, the one who will
- 2:07reign in perfect righteousness forever and ever.
- 2:12It says each. Each of these rulers ruling
- 2:14justly will be like a shelter from the wind, a refuge from the
- 2:19rain, like flowing streams in a dry land, in the shade of a
- 2:23massive rock in an arid land. These are all comforts,
- 2:28protections that are there when you're in the wind.
- 2:33A shelter would be incredibly welcome, especially as you think
- 2:37about the desert climate that they found themselves in.
- 2:41And when there's lots of wind, you wouldn't be able to see
- 2:44anything. The dust and stuff in the air,
- 2:47the sand in the air would irritate your eyes.
- 2:50And so shelter would be a wonderful a refuge from the
- 2:53rain. I don't know if you guys have
- 2:55ever gotten caught out in the rain before.
- 2:57I grew up in Colorado, where there's over 300 days of
- 3:00sunshine a year. And then I moved to Southern
- 3:04California, where there's already not a lot of rain.
- 3:07And I lived in the Antelope Valley, which is about an hour
- 3:1045 N of LA, where it's desert and there's even less rain than
- 3:15there is down in LA. And then I moved up to
- 3:18Washington state, and you might think to yourself, I bet there
- 3:20was a lot of rain there. You'd be wrong.
- 3:23Again. I was in the desert there in
- 3:26Central Washington, and we even had tumbleweeds and things that
- 3:30came across during the summer times.
- 3:32And so I was in very dry places up till I came here to Maryland.
- 3:37And so I'm not used to all of this rain that we get here yet.
- 3:40And I was laughing the other night, my wife and I, I think
- 3:44we're watching a show or something before bed.
- 3:47And there was just this ginormous Thunder clap that just
- 3:51reverberated for probably 1015 seconds.
- 3:54And we were like, what? The world is going on?
- 3:57And so if there's a heavy rainfall, I'm glad for a refuge.
- 4:01I'm glad for my house that I can take shelter in here like
- 4:05flowing streams in a dry land that water the one of the most
- 4:11important building blocks for life.
- 4:14When you're in a dry land desert, a wilderness, being able
- 4:18to find these streams in the desert is so, so important and
- 4:23life giving. And a massive rock providing
- 4:26shade in a super hot area of land that would keep you from
- 4:32getting, you know, heat stroke and possibly even dying.
- 4:36All of these things are what it is when rulers rule justly.
- 4:41You might notice even in our world today, there's very few
- 4:45times that we live and we would say our rulers are this for me,
- 4:51that because of the justice, because of the good laws,
- 4:55because of the fair taxes, because of the protections that
- 5:00are given by these individuals in positions of leadership.
- 5:04This is how my life feels. But one day that is going to be
- 5:09the case. And I want to encourage you if
- 5:11you are ever called on to lead, whether it's something as small
- 5:16as you know, your local school board or City Council, even
- 5:23something within your church, lead it well so that for people
- 5:28to interact with you feels like a life saving, life giving,
- 5:33protecting thing. May people go to you as a
- 5:37shelter from the storms of life. May we not be that biting sand,
- 5:43the scorching sun. May we not be those things, the
- 5:47rain that just consistently downpours on people.
- 5:51May we be the safe harbor for them.
- 5:55Not a not one of these bad life scenarios.
- 6:00Verse #3 Then the eyes of those who see will not be closed, and
- 6:06the ears of those who hear will listen.
- 6:08People in the face of God's truth and character will
- 6:14actually pay attention to Him, unlike what happened all
- 6:18throughout the Old Testament, even in the life of Jesus when
- 6:22He was here on this earth. John in John chapter 12
- 6:29highlights this for us, quoting from Isaiah.
- 6:33Having eyes they do not see, having ears they do not hear,
- 6:38they will not turn, so that the Lord would forgive their sins.
- 6:42And what a sad state of affairs that that was.
- 6:46But on this day, on this good day that is coming, all those
- 6:50encountering God will see Him, they will listen to Him.
- 6:54Verse #4 The reckless mind will gain knowledge and the
- 6:58stammering tongue will speak clearly and fluently.
- 7:02A fool will no longer be called a noble, nor a scoundrel said to
- 7:07be important on that day when righteous people are in charge.
- 7:12With certainly our righteous king at the helm, there is no
- 7:15longer going to be stupid, ungodly, evil, wicked
- 7:21individuals that are in charge of the nations of the world.
- 7:26And we look forward to that day with joyful anticipation.
- 7:30Verse #6 For a spool. For a fool speaks foolishness,
- 7:34and his mind plots iniquity. He lives in a godless way and
- 7:39speaks falsely about Yahweh. He leaves the hungry empty and
- 7:43deprives the thirsty of drink. So here a fool.
- 7:48What typifies him, especially in a position of leadership, as
- 7:52here, is that he says false things about God and he, if you
- 7:59will, he dishonors God with his lips and he dishonors God with
- 8:04his actions, that he withholds good.
- 8:07He withholds food and drink, the necessary building blocks for
- 8:12life from those that require them.
- 8:15Contrary to some people's opinions, the government is not,
- 8:20is not here to give everyone a handout for everything.
- 8:23But at the very least, God holds leaders here in Isaiah 32
- 8:28accountable for when there are people that need daily provision
- 8:33and they are not given it. That is something that is
- 8:37needed. Now, as far as if it's only food
- 8:41and drink, if there's perhaps shelter or something that that
- 8:45would be included here, you could talk about it here.
- 8:49Even in Israel, there's more of a relatively mild climate there.
- 8:57In that portion of the world where we're at in Maryland, we
- 9:01especially in our summers and our winters encounter incredible
- 9:08variety and temperatures. Even this past January or
- 9:11February was incredibly cold and my, my heart goes out to those
- 9:16even that are experiencing homelessness and various things
- 9:21like that, that one of the things that here God says a fool
- 9:25does is he doesn't care about the state of others.
- 9:28He only cares about himself, and his disrespect for God extends
- 9:33to those who are made in God's image.
- 9:35So he speaks falsely about the Lord, and he treats as of no
- 9:41consequence. Or if you will, he disrespects
- 9:44those made in God's image just as he disrespects the Lord with
- 9:48his mouth. Verse #7 The scoundrel's weapons
- 9:51are destructive. He hatches plots to destroy the
- 9:55needy with lies, even when the poor person says what is right.
- 9:59But a noble person plans noble things.
- 10:02He stands up for noble causes. So one of the ways that you can
- 10:07know when a person is a scoundrel, a bad person is when
- 10:10they are looking to harm or disenfranchise those that are
- 10:14already poor and needy. And it doesn't matter what the
- 10:18person has to say. The scoundrel here is one that
- 10:23wants to take advantage of the poor.
- 10:27Let the reader understand. Verse #9 stand up.
- 10:30You complacent women, listen to me.
- 10:33Pay attention to what I say. You overconfident daughters, in
- 10:37a little more than a year, you overconfident ones will shudder,
- 10:41for the grapes will fail and the harvest will not come.
- 10:44So here there is an economic downturn that is coming.
- 10:48So if you notice, we've kind of taken a turn.
- 10:51So there was the hopeful future that Isaiah is prophesying via
- 10:56the word of the Lord Lord of the good day that is coming.
- 10:59But right now, the fool and the scoundrel, they are in charge of
- 11:03Jerusalem and in charge of that southern Kingdom of Judah.
- 11:07And so there is going to come even an economic judgment on the
- 11:11harvest time that is going to happen here, as God says in a
- 11:15little more than a year. Verse #11 Shudder, you
- 11:18complacent ones, tremble you overconfident ones.
- 11:22Strip yourselves bare and put sackcloth around your waist, be
- 11:27to your breasts in mourning for the delightful fields and the
- 11:30fruitful vines, for the ground of My people growing thorns and
- 11:34briars, indeed for every joyous house in the jubilant city.
- 11:40So here there is supposed to be repentance and grief for the
- 11:44wickedness that has taken place that is resulting now in God's
- 11:49judgement. And here even with the thorns
- 11:51and briars in the ground. This should make us think of the
- 11:56curse in Genesis 3, that as a result of Adam and Eve choosing
- 12:01to reject God's way and instead choose their own definition of
- 12:06right and wrong and their own way of living, that God said
- 12:10what Adam would now encounter is instead of the trees freely
- 12:14giving their fruit for the survival of humanity, instead
- 12:20Adam would toil in the ground and the ground itself would
- 12:23fight him at times and there would be thorns and thistles and
- 12:26briars that would make planting difficult.
- 12:30So this is you relied on your own wisdom and your own way of
- 12:34thinking. And so now you are going to reap
- 12:37the consequences of that, that you're not getting divine
- 12:40blessing for living life in obedience to God's Word and in
- 12:45connection with His character. You wanted to try your own way.
- 12:48Wonderful. Try tilling the ground without
- 12:51the blessing of God. Verse #14 For the palace will be
- 12:56deserted, the busy city abandoned, the hill and the
- 13:00watchtower will become barren places forever, the joy of wild
- 13:04donkeys and a pasture for flocks, until the Spirit from on
- 13:09high is poured out on us. Then the desert will become an
- 13:13orchard, and the orchard will seem like a forest.
- 13:16Then justice will inhabit the wilderness, and righteousness
- 13:20will dwell in the orchard. The result of righteousness will
- 13:24be peace. The effect of righteousness will
- 13:26be quiet confidence forever. Then my people will dwell in a
- 13:30peaceful place, in safe and secure dwellings.
- 13:34But hail will level the forest, and the city will sink into the
- 13:38depths. You will be happy as you sow
- 13:40seed beside abundant water and as you let oxen and donkeys
- 13:45range freely. So here there's this recognition
- 13:51of Jerusalem and Judah's inability to get it right.
- 13:56Like they're just going to keep on in this process until
- 14:00something happens. Isaiah talks about it here.
- 14:04We've been in the book of Joel before in the minor prophets he
- 14:07talks about it. Peter mentions it in Acts 2 when
- 14:11this actually happens that the Holy Spirit comes down and
- 14:14indwells the people of God. Not now simply the children of
- 14:19Israel that were being talked to here, but all of the children of
- 14:23Israel who would believe and all of the Gentiles, the non Jewish
- 14:27people that would believe on the Lord.
- 14:29And all of them would experience the Holy Spirit living with in
- 14:33them. And as a result of the Spirit
- 14:35living in them. There is God's blessing that
- 14:38comes even in verse #17 the result of righteousness that now
- 14:43dwells in this people that is right relationship with God and
- 14:47man. The result of righteousness will
- 14:50be peace that the people of God ought to be a people of peace.
- 14:56Jesus is called the Prince of Peace as we read even in Chapter
- 15:019 if I remember correctly, like around 9 and verse 6.
- 15:05So we are to be the people of peace.
- 15:09I even remember what James told us in James chapter 3.
- 15:13I'm going to turn over there pretty quickly because I want to
- 15:16make sure that I have this particular quote correct.
- 15:22And what James tells us in James chapter 3 is, but the wisdom
- 15:28from above is first pure, then peace, loving, gentle,
- 15:33compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering without
- 15:37pretense. And the fruit of righteousness
- 15:41is sown in peace by those who cultivate peace.
- 15:46And so I'm certain here that then this verse, the result of
- 15:48righteousness, will be peace. The effect of righteousness will
- 15:51be quiet confidence forever. This passage here in Isaiah is
- 15:55what James has in mind as he's writing to those that were
- 15:59formerly in his church now scattered all around.
- 16:04The people have got out to be peaceful people.
- 16:07Are you constantly getting in fights and arguments with other
- 16:11people? Is your natural temperament now
- 16:15that you have accepted the Lord? Is it going more and more
- 16:19towards an even keeled, peaceful personality?
- 16:24Or are you still being a volatile, angry, contentious,
- 16:31anxious, always stirring something up, gossip filled type
- 16:37person? Which one of those
- 16:40characteristics is currently defining you?
- 16:43Can I encourage you? When the Spirit comes, He
- 16:46enables us via righteousness, via right relationship with God
- 16:51and man, to be able to cultivate a peaceful spirit.
- 16:57It's one of the fruit of the Spirit that we would read in
- 17:00Galatians 5. The fruit of the Spirit is
- 17:02Lovejoy, Peace. Can I encourage you today
- 17:07knowing this future that is coming, a future that is good,
- 17:11in which Jesus rules and there will be good rulers.
- 17:15There will be such plenty and abundance that there is a forest
- 17:20orchard, if you will think, an entire forest worth of apple
- 17:24trees and apricot trees and just plenty of food for everyone.
- 17:30Knowing that this wonderful future is ahead for us and that
- 17:35Jesus has given us His Spirit now so that we can act like we
- 17:41are in that peaceful time. That we are in that time of love
- 17:45and joy and so we can live like we're in the new creation even
- 17:50while we're in the old creation. Will you choose?
- 17:53I'm going to have a peaceful demeanor.
- 17:56I'm going to deal peacefully with people today.
- 17:59Now, if you make that choice and you say this is the path I want
- 18:02to go, know that it will be tested and you will be given
- 18:05plenty of opportunities to try out whether or not you actually
- 18:10will become a peaceful person today or a peaceful person this
- 18:16week. Can I encourage you, no matter
- 18:18what the struggle or the temptation, the hurt is, it will
- 18:23not take away anything from you that truly matters because of
- 18:28what Jesus has accomplished, our future is secure.
- 18:32The Holy Spirit of God inside of us, he will never leave.
- 18:36And so nothing that we can encounter in our life will
- 18:39ultimately destroy us. And so as a result, will you
- 18:43choose to walk in a calm, settled, quiet, confident peace
- 18:49in the life that God has given you today?
- 18:52I hope that would be an encouragement to you.
- 18:54I also want to mention as well from the first portion of the
- 18:57chapter, have pity, have care, have a concern for the needs of
- 19:03those that are poor and needy. If you have food and you know
- 19:07someone that needs food, give the food.
- 19:10If you have water and you know someone or you see someone that
- 19:13needs water, give them water. This is something that is
- 19:17valuable in the eyes of God, even though it's not valuable to
- 19:21every person on planet earth. This should be something that as
- 19:25the people of God that we embrace personally, may we be
- 19:29known as once again as charitable, loving, kind people
- 19:35giving as our Father has given to us.
- 19:38Thanks for tuning in and looking forward to next episode.
- 19:41With chapter 33. We are coming up quickly to a
- 19:46narrative portion. So we're going to go through a
- 19:48story that is given kind of historical account, and I
- 19:52believe that starts in chapter 36.
- 19:54So we're coming up pretty quick to that.
- 19:56Thanks again. Looking forward to seeing you
- 19:58next episode.
