Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Yo, what's good?
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: This is Cody Ash, aka Port Shop, and I play drums for Jelly Roll.
- 0:03SPEAKER_04: My name is David Atkinson, a drum tech for Alex of a day to remember.
- 0:06SPEAKER_03: My name is Mike Chapari, and this is Loyal to the Craft.
- 0:09SPEAKER_03: What's it like getting home from tour for you guys?
- 0:11SPEAKER_03: Like what's it like you're on the routine of like not having a routine, being in a different city every day, but like getting home, do you love it?
- 0:17SPEAKER_03: Or is it kind of like that like not sure what to do with yourself for a day or two to get back to the normal routine before you go out again?
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: What do you think?
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: What's yours?
- 0:26SPEAKER_04: Uh it's difficult.
- 0:27SPEAKER_04: Like the first two or three days are definitely like just acclimation.
- 0:30SPEAKER_04: Because it also depends like where you're coming from.
- 0:32SPEAKER_04: Like if you're coming from Europe or you're on a different sleep schedule, or you know, but it also like you get home to responsibility too, you know, you got life doesn't stop at home, so you gotta kinda for me it's like a two-day shake off.
- 0:45SPEAKER_04: I need just two days to try and like get back in the swing of things, do like grocery shop and little things that kind of just change the tone.
- 0:53SPEAKER_04: But then it's also like you wake up, you have your responsibilities, but it's also like well, what now?
- 0:58SPEAKER_04: Like, is my biggest thing gonna be like taking the garbage out or doing something in a garden, or and then the opposite of that is like when you're on tour, you're in arenas or festivals full of thousands of people, constant people talking to you, and like seeing new friends, and just all that, and it's just such a like stark difference.
- 1:19SPEAKER_04: So it's like I feel like it's crucial to trying to have like a little pattern or something like for me, it's going to the grocery store, going to the car wash, as little as it is, but it's like just like a maintenance thing, or getting the oil change, like to get back into like day-to-day life.
- 1:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but it's definitely hard, you know.
- 1:35SPEAKER_04: It's like, and there's days where it's like you have to kind of force it, or finding like a routine.
- 1:39SPEAKER_04: If you have like a month off or something, it's like, okay, well, I'd have never you typically don't have that much time, or you you definitely need the rest, but at the same time, like what's your routine?
- 1:49SPEAKER_04: Like, what's your your day-to-day, you know?
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Um, I wish I had any of that.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Uh dude, I I that's what I struggle with, man.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: For me, I like when I get home, I I I don't know what it is, but I've always just taken a week off from like everything.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Um, no matter like no matter what it is.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: If I have I have to like have a week where I I don't have someone telling me where to be or like telling me what to do, or you know, having to be in a certain place of at a certain time and setting alarms and like doing all and I mean unless there's like business to be done, you know what I'm saying?
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: But like as far as like just for like me personally, if I don't have anything going on when I get home from tour, I'm taking a week off and like breathing and not doing a dang thing.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Um but that's but on the opposite end of what he was saying, what I struggle with is after that week what happens because then it's like okay, cool, I like cleaned my house because I haven't been here in six months.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Uh I got new sheets, slept, slept in a bed.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: That was cool.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: This is great.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: All right, got my truck washed.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: And it's and so after that, you know, after I like go and see friends and go and see family, then I get home and I'm just kind of sitting there and I'm you know, I don't really play video games, I don't really have, I don't really have anything.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: I've been trying to get back into working out, but you know, it just getting started on that is you know the process in itself for someone like me that doesn't like working out, you know.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: And uh and man, I like, you know, so that's that's something that I kind of like try to figure out.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: And you know, if I had a if I had the drums in my house, it'd be one thing, but like I was talking to you earlier, I don't have the whole things there.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: So really I just try to get into rights or try to do whatever, but if it ain't that, like I'm just kind of sitting there like, oh my god, dude.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Like right really, like what I'm going through right now is like antsy, and like I did like I've been home for two months, and I'm like, okay, dude, I've like gotta do something, you know.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: I got like I need to play a show or I need to whatever.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: But um, so really just fine, you know, finding that thing when you get home is is super important for your brain, but also you know, not to don't get discouraged because like I'm one of those people that I I just get super down if I don't have anything going on, if I'm not touring, you know.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: So now I'm just like sitting here waiting for the next tour trying to figure out something to keep my mind from going insane.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 4:08SPEAKER_03: How do you guys know each other?
- 4:09SPEAKER_03: Music industry is so small, and I've always loved that, you know, the networking that's that's that can happen behind the scenes in the music world, right?
- 4:15SPEAKER_03: And like it's such a community, and I feel like for young musicians that want to break in, it could be a little bit intimidating, but like we're sitting right here, like totally separate worlds, but like you guys know each other from what a tour?
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: Like, I know you filled in for a band and you guys are up on the road.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: Like, tell me about that.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: But we dated for like three months.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's supposed to be like here we are.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: It's out there now.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: We're bringing up all the wood.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: I'm playing.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Um, dude, I gotta uh so I've known like the knock loose dudes, they're from Kentucky, so I've known those guys like our whole career since they were in their local bands, and I was in my local bands and stuff.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, so we we've always just kind of we kind of came up at the same time.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Knockloose was getting big as I joined Siler, and then we toured together on warped and whatever, you know, they've just been my I've known those dudes for a long time.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: But me and Kevin, um their drummer in particular, uh, you know, we're really tight.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: We we have like a I gave him a lesson one time.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, we just have a whole different uh kind of friendship.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: So I've I've just known him for a really long time.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: And um in 2019, they got like they weren't they weren't supposed to like be touring over the summer, like they were like gonna take a few months off.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: And um a data remember hit him up and was like, yo, you guys want to come out on this run?
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: And you know, you're not gonna say no to a data remember.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: And so they were like, absolutely.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Well, Kevin had already had something planned with his family, and uh couldn't like couldn't, you know, couldn't get out of it.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: And he was like, dude, I'm kind of in a pickle.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Like, would you want to fill in on this tour?
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: And I was like, first off, I'd do anything for you.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Second off, yes, absolutely.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: I get to play knock loose songs and tour with Data Remember, like, absolutely, I'm freaking there.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: And uh, and at that time I had never met uh any of the Day to Remember guys, and so I, you know, that was like a really cool, like full circle moment for me, like as a kid, you know, because I was obviously a Day to Remember fan.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: And uh, and so we get out on a tour, and um I'm trying, you know, I'm trying not to like overstep because I don't know, like you know, some bands are kind of weird and about you know, egotistical about being around them or being in their vicinity, which I don't understand, you know what I'm saying?
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: Like, relax guys.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Um like, but uh but the day remember weren't those dudes like uh the first show, like we just we all super we just hit it off, like we were all in the green rooms just going back and forth and hanging out, and then through that, me and David, I think me and David were on the like stage and we just started shooting the shit and talking.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: I think he showed me Alex's um his throne because it was the first time I'd ever seen one of those green rooms.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: The Porter and Davies, yeah.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: We just got that.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you guys just got there, and you're like, You want to sit on it?
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: And I was like, what does it do?
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: And they were like, bro, it's insane.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: You just gotta sit on it.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: I was like, and yeah, so that's that's kind of how me and him became friends, and we you know just stay tight.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: And then like, you know, like we were talking about earlier, just the whole music and metal network, just you know, everybody somehow has been in passing with with everyone, and and like you know, he he's friends with a lot of people that I'm friends with, and which is how we ended up seeing each other a few years ago at the Iowa State Fair of all places we're at the Iowa State Fair, and uh but you know, he he knew he knows my tech Casey, and uh and you know, we've been friends forever, so it's since since that 2019 tour, but that's wild, that's how we met, and we just always stay in contact because it's my freaking boy, dude.
- 7:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, heck yeah, dude.
- 7:46SPEAKER_04: Just see each other at festivals or you know, whatever it may be.
- 7:49SPEAKER_04: But I feel like he's one of those people too, probably to a lot of people, like when you you see each other, it's not like so what's been up, or no.
- 7:55SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 7:56SPEAKER_04: It's like you pick back up where you left off, even if it's been like years, you know.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like not the awkward conversations of like, so are you like drums?
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: So you like drums?
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: That's cool.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Going on tour.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, do you still work?
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: That's cool.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Cool, dude.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Man, I sleep in a bus.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: You still work for like with a dater members to play drums, yeah.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: Drum sticks, yeah, we do that too.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I got those, yeah.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: We got drumsticks.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: Tell me about like tell me about you know, young musicians looking at what you guys do, drum tech in for a data member.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: You've done a lot of different bands playing, filling in for knock loose, now playing for jelly roll.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: How should young musicians approach getting into the music industry for the first time via networking and then having self-worth for themselves, where it's like, on one hand, you want to break in and you want to do a favor so you can get the spot, but you don't want that to be the only thing that you're known for.
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: You want to have value where you can make a sustainable career out of music.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: Like, what would you say to your younger self, like getting into the gigs that you guys are you know at the at this point now after decades being in the industry?
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: I'll let you start that one because I'm I'm interested to hear from your perspective.
- 9:03SPEAKER_04: It all comes down to to one thing, and you and even in your lane, like hard work.
- 9:07SPEAKER_04: You have to have a goal, you know, like everyone wants to be like, okay, well, I want to be the biggest drummer in the world, or I want to be this, but like there's nothing stopping you from doing that.
- 9:17SPEAKER_04: But are you what are you gonna do to pave that way forward for whether it's going to be to shows or what are you gonna do to make it happen?
- 9:24SPEAKER_04: It's true though, you know.
- 9:26SPEAKER_04: And like everyone starts working for nothing, and then you know, you climb, and sometimes you don't, you know, it's not always like linear, like I was talking to you about earlier.
- 9:33SPEAKER_04: It's not okay, well, I do a data remember, so I'm gonna get the call for X, Y, and Z.
- 9:38SPEAKER_04: It's like it depends on what's what are you gonna do to get the call, and that's put the work forward.
- 9:43SPEAKER_04: Usually, you know, not always, a lot of times hard work is recognized, and it can be with getting a call for a gig or someone saying, Hey man, you're killing it, whether that's Alex at the end of the night, like, dude, kid sounds great, or whatever.
- 9:54SPEAKER_04: I do the same thing every day, but it's like just a little pat on the back.
- 9:58SPEAKER_04: It's being willing to do whatever's done, like whether it's you know, you want to be a drum tech, like, hey, would you consider stage managing, or would you consider also whatever it may be, you have to be willing to say yes to anything.
- 10:12SPEAKER_04: And then you climb, you climb to the point where do you want to be just a drum tech?
- 10:17SPEAKER_04: Okay, well, are you gotta match it with your skills?
- 10:19SPEAKER_04: You know, you have to know everything, you have to be able to predict.
- 10:22SPEAKER_04: You can't necessarily predict anything that's gonna go wrong, even even as a drummer, you know.
- 10:27SPEAKER_04: Could be a cymbal arm goes, could be you break a snare head or anything, but you have to be able to kind of predict and what are you gonna do to set yourself up to nail that, you know 100%.
- 10:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: I um I think one of my favorite things to talk to kids about in in that realm is like for for where I got to where I am and like what I do.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: Um is what like a mindset that I always had was what are you like like he just said, what are you what am what am I gonna do different to like to get my name out there and to like be seen?
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Because there's hundreds of thousands of people trying to do the same exact thing that I'm doing.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: So it's like what what am I gonna do to be different?
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: How am I gonna stand out?
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Because posting videos on the internet isn't enough.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: I was like, I would drive hours and hours to shows because shows didn't shows and tours, like Kentucky was like a C D market, you know what I'm saying?
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: Back it's in the early times of like the underground metal world, like no tours were coming through Kentucky, so there just wasn't a market there for it.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: And um, and so for me it was like I was driving to Chicago, St.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: Louis, West Virginia, Virginia, Nashville, any anywhere just to like see a show, Indianapolis, dude.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Like one one of my favorite stories to tell is like I tell Jack this probably more than I should, but um, you know, when I was trying to get my name out there and networking, like I was a massive sleeping with sirens fan, and so I saw they were going to Indianapolis.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: So I drove to Indianapolis just on the chain, because I knew the I knew the venue, I knew where the vans parked, I knew all the stuff.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: And I'm I'm not saying go find out where bands park and be a weirdo, you know what I'm saying?
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Like, but at the same time, I was willing to do anything just to shake someone's hand.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: And also you got to know your know your bounds.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, don't sit there and don't be a stalker.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Don't be a stalker, don't ask for pictures, don't ask, like, approach like approach yourself as a professional as if you are on the same ground with these people.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: Don't be don't come off as a fan, whatever.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: If you want to be taken seriously, you have to be at the same mental level as like what the people that you're trying to do are, you know?
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and so like when someone meets you, they're not asking for your picture, they're not asking for whatever.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: And I like I said, I I like I'm not saying that for myself.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: I like signing autographs, I like what people ask me for pictures.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: But in that realm where I was trying to get something and be seen as an equal, um, an equal isn't gonna do that.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: So I I would just do whatever I could to just walk up to someone, be like, hey man, I'm not trying to take your time, I just want to introduce myself.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: My name's Cody, I play drums, I do this, would love to, you know, chat and you know, just keep in contact when whatever.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it works, sometimes it wouldn't.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: And sometimes you just get a handshake and go about your ways, and that was it.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: But that's enough to where when you see that person again, you just give a quick reminder.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: And then you see that person again, they're like, Oh yo, I don't don't I know you, and then you and then you're by that time you're with someone that they know, so it's like, oh, you're cool, you're okay, you're this.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: And then you know, you know what I'm saying?
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: You start getting bedded into these people's brains because you're around and around more, and people are gaining more and more respect for you because you've been able to be the hang, and so on and so forth.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: And um, I think that's a super important thing.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: Networking, I would tell kids that networking is everything.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: Um, everything is an opportunity.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Like if you're in a place where if you're not, if you're not got a roof over your head, if you're not making like a living or not, or you know, if you're not where you want to be, then everything that comes your way is an opportunity, no matter how big or small.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Everything is an opportunity to get your name out there.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: Don't ever think that you're too cool for something.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: That is an extremely important thing to remember.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: Don't ever think that you're above anything because you're not.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: And and but also, you know, also keep keep your wits about you, like understand what you deserve.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: But if you're at that level where you're trying to grind and everything, there's nothing too big or too small that you can do to where you're like, oh, I'm too cool for this, or oh, I'm too good for, you know, you're not, you're because you're not at that level to where you can make those decisions yet.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: And and you know, and even then, even getting to that level where you can make those decisions, it's still not to be like it's still not good to be that negative mindset of like, oh, I'm too good for this.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: Like you should always look at everything as an opportunity and be grateful for the fact that you even considered for the opportunity.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: Um, and then on top of that, a very two I'll say two last things that I tell people.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: It is insanely important to um that if you fail, every failure is a lesson.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: Like, if you don't get a gig, if you mess up on a fill, if you're live and you mess up, own it.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: Realize it, own it.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Don't try to play it off, don't try to act like you messed up, like own that you messed up.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Talk about it, relive it, practice it, and really like take that in so that it doesn't happen again, and so that you can like not lie to yourself and not get down on yourself and just learn from any failure.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: If you get kicked out of a band, if you don't get a gig, whatever, that should just only drive you to be better than where you're at.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: And then the last thing is something that someone told me about getting gigs was that on a scale of like if you're looking at something from like a hundred percent perspective, it is 85% about you as a person and the hang.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: It is uh 10% about the networking, the marketing, the music world, and it's five percent about playing your instrument.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: Anybody can play an instrument, and there's gonna be like for me personally, there's gonna be and that honestly you can go even go into teching too.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Like, there's gonna there's a thousand techs out there, there's hundreds, hundreds of thousands of doing what I do and what he does, all gunning for the same position.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: At any given time.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: And but it's about that can that can keep up, that is just as good as me, probably maybe just as good as you, like, or if not better, if not whatever, the same level.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: But it's really about who you are as a person and who you are as a hang, and like, can you be around these people?
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: Can you be a team player?
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Can you not cause problems?
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: Can you show up on time?
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: Can you get done what you're asked to get done of and like not be a problem?
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: Because nobody wants to tour.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Sure, you might be the greatest drummer in the world, might be the greatest tech in the world, but if you suck to be around, they ain't gonna keep you.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: They're gonna find the next dude that can play the part and they like hanging out with, you know what I'm saying?
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: So 100% being a person that is versatile and a team player and not a problem causer, and shows up and does what they need to do and is a good hang, that is the most important part about getting to where you want to be, just being genuine and real and you know, showing up showing up solid all around.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: What other realities of touring, specifically touring, in the music worlds, were you both kind of shocked that exists?
- 17:02SPEAKER_03: That's like, whoa, I thought it was gonna be this way.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: Because everybody has that, right?
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: Even even outside the music space.
- 17:07SPEAKER_03: Like, I thought me getting this job was gonna make everything perfect.
- 17:11SPEAKER_03: Like when you guys started really getting into touring, what were some of the realities of touring that were like a pretty big wake-up call of like, all right, like this is because it's not, it's not perfect.
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: Touring is difficult for sure.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: Whether it's routine, whether it's you're in a bus with you know 10 individuals that some of them might not be a good hang.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: Like, what are some things that the young musicians out there that are trying to tap into this should be aware of so that it's not such a letdown for when they get to that point?
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: I think it just depends on um what level, you know, because some people are extremely lucky and and get noticed from their whether it's a video or you know, if they're doing hard work, you know, XYZ, you know, you know, you don't ever know anyone's full story, but uh some people do get very fortunate to land a gig where they're getting paid and so on and so forth.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: That's obviously something that is very few and far between, and very lucky and fortunate if that happens to you.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: Uh for someone like me, that did not happen.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: I went 10 years of bouncing around and trying to network and do all this and fill it, fill in for this band, fill in for this band, anything to just like get my name out there.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: So the reality of the of the matter is is more than likely you're gonna come in, especially with metal and like smaller underground metal world, you're not gonna come in making money.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: Like, I came in, I was in metal for 10 plus years, like didn't make a dollar, like wasn't couldn't get my gas money back.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: I was driving to New York, couldn't, you know what I'm saying?
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: Like, we didn't have any funds, and I worked four jobs when I would get off tour just so that I could have money to go on tour and eat and not feel stressed when I was on the road and be able to enjoy it.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: But a lot of people don't understand that reality.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: They think they're gonna be in a touring band and start making money just because they're on tour.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: That's not how that works.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: Like, it took me I didn't sleep on a bus with with for the band that I was in until 12 years in.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: I didn't make a paycheck until 12 years in.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: And then um, and then like I didn't have I didn't get to stop working a job until like 2021, you know what I'm saying?
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: And like I did like I was I didn't have a drum tech until 2023 or 2024 was the first time I ever had a drum tech, you know.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: And by that time, that's like 15 years into doing this stuff, and a lot of people think it just like happens like that, or it's you know, or it should be overnight, or oh my band got signed, we're gonna be successful, everybody's gonna no, that's not how this world works.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: And if you know, I I think that there's a very common misconception that that that's what will happen when your band gets signed, or you know, XYZ, but it takes years before things like that happens if if you don't have that like lucky, you know, little little spark that that happens for some people, and and that's okay, you just gotta work your butt off ten times harder, you know.
- 20:04SPEAKER_04: You're still in those people's minds that like all the people that you you spoke about, like in the beginning, like hey, I'm Cody, yeah, yada, yada, yada.
- 20:10SPEAKER_04: You're okay, well he's still at it, he's still at it, he's still at it.
- 20:12SPEAKER_04: And then you 10, 15 years in, you're developing those relationships where you're still like, oh yeah, I remember you, like you said, and so on and so forth.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: It's the same on the tech side, like so, it's so important, it's so vital.
- 20:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you have to, you have to make you always want to be like the dude that's gonna be working harder, like, oh so and so, yeah, he's gonna kill it.
- 20:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know that, you know.
- 20:32SPEAKER_04: Teching side, I was like, I was I toured with the band fresh out of high school.
- 20:36SPEAKER_04: I was making like five bucks a day, and that was just like, hey, that's what it is.
- 20:39SPEAKER_04: I was like, you know, I was at 18 years old, I was I had no real responsibility.
- 20:43SPEAKER_04: I was still living at home.
- 20:44SPEAKER_04: My mom was like, here's a hundred bucks, don't blow it.
- 20:47SPEAKER_04: I'm like, of course, we fucking blew that.
- 20:49SPEAKER_04: Just straight into good movies.
- 20:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, dude.
- 20:52SPEAKER_04: And it was just like the hustle and hustle, and then I got a real job for a while, and I was just like, man, I think I want to do this teching thing, but like when you think about it like from the perspective, like, oh, you're in a bus and you're touring with your friends, and you're this and you're that's like, nah, you're in a five, 15 passenger van, five rows deep, taking showers at like truck stops, and how how often are you travel?
- 21:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's the one thing for me, at least.
- 21:15SPEAKER_04: Like, I thought I was gonna be like, oh, we're in a bus, we're gonna be going here, we're on warp tour.
- 21:18SPEAKER_04: We're doing I'm like, bro, warp tour means like chilling in a parking lot, your AC's broken.
- 21:22SPEAKER_04: Like, it's fun and it's a hang, but it's like you work for your money on that tour.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: No matter what you do, port a potties.
- 21:28SPEAKER_04: If you're playing, if you're if you're tech in, if you're the catering crew, if you're anybody, like you are earning your money on that tour.
- 21:34SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 21:35SPEAKER_04: And that's like I feel like where I'm fortunate to have that to cut our teeth was it's like growing up and like always going to Warp Tour.
- 21:41SPEAKER_04: Like I told you, I saw Cyrus at a warp tour when he had a broken arm, and it was like that.
- 21:45SPEAKER_04: But then being able to be on warp tour, it's like, okay, this is like real work, you know.
- 21:49SPEAKER_04: Waking up at 7 a.m.
- 21:51SPEAKER_04: to dump semis to get your kid, and then like dealing with whatever was going on at the stages or whatever, or if just dealing with the punches of that, and then you Start making okay money and so on and so on.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: Mile to mile and a half walk to catering.
- 22:05SPEAKER_03: If you didn't have a line, if you didn't have a GM to go get it for you.
- 22:08SPEAKER_03: Or pushing your gear through the three mile terrain.
- 22:12SPEAKER_04: Dude.
- 22:12SPEAKER_04: That's what the like the merch people having to do that.
- 22:14SPEAKER_04: Like, hey, yeah, you gotta your trailer's on the back of the bus.
- 22:17SPEAKER_04: Merch is half a mile that way, so yeah, through everything.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: Yo, truck stop, also for anybody getting into touring, truck stops and planet fitness are your two saving graces when it comes to showers.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: Lifelines.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: Planet Fitness, bro.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: Get your band to put to buy two or three black Planet Fitness cards, paid the$30 a month, and everybody gets to shower whenever you want to.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: It pays for itself.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: You shower every single night if your venue don't have a shower.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: And everybody gets in.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: Also, the other misconception about what you were saying is what I was gonna bring up when you were talking about like the touring, being in advance stuff, is like there's this with even just with people in general, they're like, oh my god, you're on tour, you get to see so much.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: You don't get to see nothing, dude.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: Uh unless you are making millions and millions and and you got car service and and people to take you around at your everything, which I I don't have.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: No, like it's not that's not a common thing unless you're a famous artist.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: Um, but like it's you you unless you want to you're gonna walk around the vicinity of the venue, and unless you got all the money to order all the Ubers in the world and you know do whatever you want, like seeing the world ain't really it.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: You get to see what's in the circumference of the venue in the venue, and it's like, oh cool, yeah, I've I've been to the city.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: Like, I can't tell you how many dude, I've toured the world, I've probably been around the United States every bit of 20 to 30 times at this point in my life, if not more, and still haven't seen the Grand Canyon, still haven't seen Yellowstone National Park, still haven't been to Alaska, still haven't been to Hawaii.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: Like, there's I there's a lot of shit that like I haven't seen.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: Sorry, I don't know if we're a lot of cuts, I can't say my bad.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: Um a lot of stuff that I that I still haven't like seen, and it and even when we go over to Europe and so like the only really like traveling that I ever did was in Japan, and it was because we had like time off to do it.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, it's rare, but it's and then on top of that, when you do get the days off and it's like, oh, finally you can go do something, it's like you just got off of a four or five show stretch, and you just want to sit and just breathe for a day.
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: Maybe eat three meals, maybe do laundry, maybe catch up on emails.
- 24:23SPEAKER_03: For real.
- 24:23SPEAKER_03: You sure know the alleyway of the Webster Theater in Hartford, Connecticut.
- 24:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the back of your hand.
- 24:27SPEAKER_03: You know, like the alleyways and the streets around the venue.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: You're like, I've definitely been here before.
- 24:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 24:32SPEAKER_04: For real.
- 24:33SPEAKER_04: It's not always like, and then sometimes like it's a travel day or this, and then very rarely, every now and then you'll get like a day off in like Chicago or somewhere, and you're like, oh wow, I actually have a time to see something.
- 24:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I can't remember where I heard it, but it was like when you tour, like you've been everywhere but seen nothing.
- 24:49SPEAKER_04: So to speak, you know, there's not yeah, it's a lot of like hustle and bustle.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: A super tour like tech slogan.
- 24:55SPEAKER_04: Totally, but I know that I bit that from somebody.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, no.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: That's like I think that's I think I've just been hearing that like my whole life.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: Probably you know what I'm saying, like just throughout different tours.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: I do like someone during the tour is like been everywhere, seen nothing.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: Um also keep in mind, just for anybody watching this, this in no way is this us complaining about what we do.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: We're just trying to give you the reality of what it actually is.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: We're not complaining that we don't get to see things, we're just fully aware that when we tour, it's just not gonna see things.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: So we're just telling, letting you know, like this this is the reality of it, you know what I'm saying?
- 25:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and at the end of the day, when you love something and you're passionate about it, you are going to be willing to give certain things up.
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: It works through whether it's a monetary thing, whether it's a man, I wish I was playing arenas, but I'm playing hundred cap venues.
- 25:46SPEAKER_03: Like, you have to be very aware of the reality of crawl, walk, run, and it may take a year, it may take 10 years, but I feel like it's uh, and I've seen it with bands where it's like any over any quote unquote overnight success story hasn't really lasted from what I've seen.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: So having those that decade of experience that you've had is gonna pay itself in dividends for you, where or anybody that's done that, where it's like, all right, well, when you get to this point of playing big shows with jelly or doing these arena festival runs with the data remember Avenge Sevenfold, like you're not only gonna appreciate it more, but you're gonna know how to be the best hang possible.
- 26:20SPEAKER_03: You're gonna know how to do all the things everybody expects, so you can keep doing that stuff.
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: And it is that it's it's not any sort of disingenuine or ungrateful uh perception of it.
- 26:30SPEAKER_03: It's just the re the reality is, and that's what Loyal to the Craft is trying to do is give the realities of what this is so that you can go in with not blinders on, you can go in with the full perspective of all right, I understand that.
- 26:41SPEAKER_03: Hopefully, I can make it so I can make a little bit of money and take a vacation and see the Grand Canyon or whatever.
- 26:46SPEAKER_03: And getting to that point, that's the North Star, whatever that is for you.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: And I and that's something that like uh another to go back to what we were saying, I I actually forgot to mention this.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: Something that anybody, anytime someone asks me, like, how I got to this level or how we get to this level, like one of the things that I had to accept uh at a very early on, and but also just with the way that my mind works personally, I I will give up anything and everything to play drums.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: I will give up anything and everything to do this life.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: Um, this is what I've always wanted, you know what I'm saying?
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: Like that that's how much I love this.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I don't think a lot of people will sometimes grasp like how much of a reality that is of missing things and like giving up things.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I've lost relationships, I've lost uh family members that I couldn't go to the funerals, I've lost my my all of my best friends have gotten married, didn't get to go to a single wedding.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: And you know what I'm saying?
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: And which is but those are all things that I'm like completely I knew that that was gonna happen in life, and I I had to be like, okay, like you know, I had to, you know, miss birthdays, miss all that miss stuff with my parents, miss stuff with family, and all these things, and that's just like part of coming into this.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: You have to come in ready and already, knowing that that's how this is gonna be.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: And there are gonna things that you're gonna, there are gonna be things that you're gonna have to miss, and you have to be okay with that.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: And if you're not okay with that, that this you know, this may just not be a thing for you, and especially then that's not even involving children.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: Because once children get involved, that's a a whole other world where now you are missing, you may miss very vital moments of your baby's life.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know what I'm saying?
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: And but in order to you know do this, if you love this, that's just something that you have to come with those terms of like this is what I do, and I know this is just part of it.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: You know, I feel like that's sad as that reality is.
- 28:44SPEAKER_04: It's hard on you guys too, and and then like you got the band guys side of it too, like all a day to remember, all they all pretty much have kids.
- 28:51SPEAKER_04: And so it's like it goes.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: I'm sure I hear about it, you're like, damn, like I missed this birthday.
- 28:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, or you know, my daughter, or this or that, or whatever it could be, but it's like they're not that they're choosing that over their family, that's where they're that's where the support for the family is, and that's where like you know, that's where they're loyal to this side of it.
- 29:08SPEAKER_04: It comes at a at a cost, you know.
- 29:10SPEAKER_04: And there's a million songs written about it and things like that, where it's like you do give those up.
- 29:14SPEAKER_04: You you don't sleep next to your loved one every night, and you know, it takes a special kind of person, especially to understand that, like, okay, hey, this is my life, you know, we live a good life, I'm gonna be gone the majority of the time.
- 29:26SPEAKER_04: But when I'm home, it's gonna be cool and I'll have time.
- 29:28SPEAKER_04: But then it's like you also have to understand, you have to go through what my ups and downs of coming home, like we were talking about, and all those things.
- 29:36SPEAKER_04: It's like it comes at a cost, but at the same side of it, is like, what's the other reality?
- 29:41SPEAKER_04: Like, even on our worst day, and you I'm sure you can relate, like maybe not in the moment, whatever it could be, you know.
- 29:48SPEAKER_04: You're like, okay, well, what would the what else would I be doing that I would like care about as much?
- 29:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, at the end of the day, man, nothing not a single thing, there's nothing in this thing.
- 29:56SPEAKER_03: At the end of the day, you get to be around drums all day, and that's the dream from when we were all teenagers nerding out about our favorite drums watching it.
- 30:03SPEAKER_03: We get to live in that space.
- 30:05SPEAKER_04: Drums, dude.
- 30:06SPEAKER_04: Drums drums.
- 30:07SPEAKER_04: That's the worst of it.
- 30:08SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: Drums and music, yeah.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, drums, music, and friendship.
- 30:12SPEAKER_04: Surely, yeah, absolutely, man.
- 30:14SPEAKER_04: God, dude.
- 30:14SPEAKER_04: That's what it all is.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: That's the other thing.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: That's the other thing about like the reality.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, and and I don't know if it's the same for you, but like, for me, like, I have such like getting playing in front of people does something for me, you know, like for my confidence and for my like not in the egotistical way, it's just it makes you feel so seen.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: You know, they do like it made for me, it makes me feel seen, and and then you know, and it seems like people care because you're taking pictures and you're designing things and you're hanging out, and people want to see, you know, people you feel like you have something to offer people, and then you know, you get home, and then it's just silent.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: Like the house is just silent.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: And sometimes that can be a real hard place to be mentally, you know what I'm saying?
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, that's that's another one of the like really hard things that that I personally deal with, like coming off a tour, and it's like you know, that's that's not that's a real struggle that a lot of people I think you know have.
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: This is like you know, maybe not everybody, but like that's something I go through and I've heard I've had other friends that kind of do it go through the same thing.
- 31:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, be prepared for the mental mental aspect of it of that sound.
- 31:28SPEAKER_03: Because music is such a connector for for across languages, across the world, and like it is such a powerful thing to see to see a musician up on stage, to be the musician.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: And to see the people in the crowd being impacted by what you're doing, you know what I'm saying?
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: And so like then you get home and it doesn't feel like you're impacting those people anymore.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: It doesn't feel like the people are you don't, you know, you maybe just don't feel as seen as what you do on stage, and that's like definitely a mental hoop to and maybe not for everyone, but like I know there's other people like me out there that do go through that mental hoop, and and so that's you know, you could be one of those people that that happens to and you just don't know it yet.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: Um but you know, just be prepared for that, you know, if you start feeling that sadness if you get off tour or something, like you know, if you need to talk someone, talk someone.
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: And if if you know, don't you're not alone, there's other people that feel it.
- 32:21SPEAKER_04: So that's a very important thing to you're not the only one feeling that way, and that goes on both sides, you know.
- 32:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 32:27SPEAKER_03: I agree.
- 32:27SPEAKER_03: Check in on your friends too, man.
- 32:29SPEAKER_03: Even outside of music, obviously.
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: Like there's a lot of kids out there, you know.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: I just talked about this the other day with them, and like I posted a video, like I felt like a poser when I was a kid, and like I was made to feel like that.
- 32:38SPEAKER_03: And I feel like there's a lot of kids in different communities and high schools that feel that way, and there's someone out there that could make them feel like they belong and make them feel like they're part of the crew and like they're cool enough.
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: Because we all feel like that, whether it's intimidation or you feel like you can't be there, you can't sit with us.
- 32:52SPEAKER_03: We we all belong, you know, like we're all human beings and we can all take care of each other.
- 32:56SPEAKER_03: And again, music being such a powerful connector, you guys are in such a position to create that.
- 33:01SPEAKER_03: It's entertainment at the end of the day, right?
- 33:02SPEAKER_03: But like you are doing something really powerful that moves people, but the mental health aspect of it is definitely something to be very mindful of and like check in on your friends, ask for help.
- 33:11SPEAKER_03: Don't be afraid to talk to people because that is such a big component of this for sure.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: I completely agree.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: Cody, on a lighter note, talk to me about doing shots out of some shoes and boots.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: How did how did that come up?
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: How did that come up?
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: Sorry to go dark there for a second, but it's real.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: But we talked about real stuff, that's real shit.
- 33:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's real.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: And it's needed, dude.
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: I mean, not not not enough people talk about it.
- 33:31SPEAKER_03: It is anybody I talked to about it, is like that's a question I enjoy asking because I would tech, I was playing not big shows, but I do, you know, 10, 100 cap venues, whatever, and then I drum tech for Newfoundland and Rancid.
- 33:42SPEAKER_03: Even that I'd come home and I'm like, you have this like buzz of like, what is happening every day?
- 33:47SPEAKER_03: There's people and there's activity and there's blah blah blah.
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: And then you get home and it's just like it takes a bit.
- 33:51SPEAKER_00: It's like that first, like I said, that first week of like not feeling having to have the the alarm set and not being pressured to be somewhere just to sit and wait for something, and then like not being told, yo, get your ears on, we gotta go on stage, like get out there, like you know, like X, Y, and Z, like not that whole rush.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: It's like a week of none of that.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: It's like, oh yes, fucking finally someone's not screaming at me.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: And then you get out of that and it's like now what?
- 34:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'm like itching to get back.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and uh, but yeah, so as far as far as the boot, dude.
- 34:21SPEAKER_03: So are the boots clean or are they those are those are show-worn boots, man?
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: So that was that was only an Australia thing because I the Australian thing is to do the shoey, and that is I will respect that till the day I die.
- 34:34SPEAKER_00: I will all I will always only do shoeys on stage in Australia.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: Um, but this was the first time the jelly had been over there.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: So I'd I'd been over there before and I didn't do the shoey.
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: Um because that was like when I learned about it, was the first time I went there.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: And also I wasn't doing like a drum breaker, didn't have like a part in the set, you know, we were just playing siler songs, but um, but now over here in the US, I'd kind of do the Stone Cold beer thing just because like I don't know, man.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: I I think it's I've never seen someone crush beers like that during a drum break.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: And so I was like, I love Stone Cold and I love you know who doesn't like seeing, I don't know, if I was on the street and I just saw two dudes smashing cans, I'd be like, hell yeah.
- 35:13SPEAKER_00: These guys are nice.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: Cool.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: Um so I don't know, man.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: I just it's it's cool.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: The crowd crowd gets like really excited when when it happens, and um so I was like, Well, we're going off show, I gotta like do something different.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: I was like, Yeah, I'll do a shoey.
- 35:25SPEAKER_00: So it was the first one.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: Um I actually did it out of Jelly's boot, um, which was probably not the best idea because that was a two-year-old shoe.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: Uh so and not just any shoe, two-year-old stage-worn shoe that was in his stage, like uh his roller case.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: So uh no air.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: So I was like, I drank it and I was like, man, there's no way that this can like be healthy.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: Like, I can't do this.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: And so then I did it the next night out of his boot, and so I was like, okay, I gotta figure out a way.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: And at the time he had like just dropped these new hey dudes, uh, and they were like these black boot hey dudes, and I was like, yo, so that I don't get a bacterial infection in my stomach while we're in Australia, what if we like promote the new shoes and I do the the um the shoey out of that?
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: And they were like, yeah, and I was like, thank god, dude.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: Um and so we uh so every every show he would like I like to drink beer, and so he would pour beer in the shoe, and he would just hold it over me and dump it, pour it all in my mouth, or you know, pour like you know, just waterfall it, and while I was doing like the double kick part, and then I'd go into the little drum break um that we had at the end of a song, and you know, it was just super sick that everybody like the Australians loved it, like they were hyped on it, and um it did well on the internet.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: Like when I was I started posting them out of the internet, and people were like, What this is gross, you know.
- 36:54SPEAKER_00: So like uh no, it was really cool, man.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: It was so funny.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: You know, I just like I said, I just like to do weird shit.
- 37:01SPEAKER_00: So, like, whatever I can do to the you know, just me and just have a good yeah, literally, just it's I'm just having a good time.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, whatever up here catching a vibe.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, dude.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: Like, don't be mad at me for having a good time.
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: Step off.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: That's awesome, dude.
- 37:15SPEAKER_03: Step off.
- 37:17SPEAKER_03: Uh short of your tech being here, David.
- 37:20SPEAKER_03: How would you uh how would you would you be down with him smashing drips on the drunk every night?
- 37:25SPEAKER_04: Oh man, Casey puts in work in the city.
- 37:27SPEAKER_04: Casey dude, Casey puts in Casey Irving, man.
- 37:29SPEAKER_04: Yes, sir.
- 37:30SPEAKER_04: He is one of the best in the best in the industry.
- 37:32SPEAKER_04: Like, and not on top of that, he's like one of those dudes that care.
- 37:35SPEAKER_04: Him and I came up, he did Pierce the Vale a lot.
- 37:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he did.
- 37:38SPEAKER_04: And that was where like we came up those data, remember, and then we're always touring together.
- 37:41SPEAKER_04: So that's where I met him like years ago.
- 37:43SPEAKER_04: He was like one of the first people I worked with.
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he obviously grinded.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, he had been great for this too.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: His story is really cool.
- 37:51SPEAKER_00: The way that he like got picked up with Pierce, he they were just like him and Mike were friends for forever.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: And he was just like, You want to come on tour?
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: in case she's like, Yeah, and just like went out with Pierce, and then Pierce blew up, and so he was like, Oh, I I got a job.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: And then through that, he ended up getting painted.
- 38:10SPEAKER_04: Right place, right time kind of shit.
- 38:11SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 38:12SPEAKER_04: That's the thing too.
- 38:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you can't you can't make it up.
- 38:14SPEAKER_04: You can't be like, Well, if I do this, surely I'll get this, or this will lead to this.
- 38:18SPEAKER_04: It's like right place, right time.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: Nobody knew it was gonna happen with Pierce, and then they got a he got with them and toured with them and ate crap for years, and then they got big, and then after that, I guess it maybe they took some time off or something, and then he got a gig with panic for 10 years, and then after panic was done, he got a job with jelly.
- 38:37SPEAKER_00: So it was like he was killing, and he did like the amity affliction.
- 38:40SPEAKER_00: I think he was going through the amity affliction, Pierce, and um someone else before like right before he got he got off of Panic and then did Pierce and the Amity Affliction, and then he got with us, and then um, but he he just did uh he'll go back.
- 38:56SPEAKER_00: He just did that Pierce show for when we were young last year.
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: He did that weekend with them, and then I think he did like an amity affliction tour or something too.
- 39:03SPEAKER_04: He yeah, you never like outgrow it, those are always your boys, you know what I mean.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: Dude, like I would I'll fill in for if there's a metal band that hits me up and I'm off, I'm so there.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: Like, I love doing that stuff.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: I just love playing.
- 39:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Casey's fucking awesome.
- 39:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Casey's.
- 39:17SPEAKER_03: At the end of the day, too, man.
- 39:18SPEAKER_03: That's just case in point for what we were saying, dude.
- 39:20SPEAKER_03: Like, no matter who it is, if you're a good hang, you know what you're doing, you're willing to work, you're willing to learn, you're willing to be a team player.
- 39:27SPEAKER_03: There's enough out there, you know.
- 39:29SPEAKER_03: It's not the music industry, I think, from the outside sometimes can seem like a dog-eat dog kind of world, but it's really not.
- 39:34SPEAKER_03: There's enough work to go around.
- 39:35SPEAKER_03: If you're a good hang, people are gonna bring you in, you're gonna get opportunities, take the time off that you need.
- 39:40SPEAKER_03: But just talking about Casey, it's like you're going from bands for a decade and then you're going to another band for a decade, and it's like you do these stints and like opportunities come in where you're like, Yeah, I'm around, I'll do it.
- 39:51SPEAKER_03: And you just keep building the Rolodex and stacking skills.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: I think bands really make it a dog eat dog world on their own.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: Like, there's so many bands that have like such egos, and I think that I I throw that word out there just because I when I was in metal, I dealt with a lot.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, even in country, bro, there's egos all over these places, and I I've never understood it, but like there's so many metal bands that are so worried about, or there's so many bands, I'm not gonna specify metal, but there's so many bands that are so worried about like say they do a headliner, they're like, we have to do this whole numerical thing of like what this band's doing, what's their Spotify, what's their algorithm, what's this, what's their views on their videos, what's this, and then like opposed to like when I feel like back earlier in the day when there this was all underground, there wasn't like a ton of huge bands in it yet.
- 40:39SPEAKER_00: It was all like we're all friends, let's tour.
- 40:41SPEAKER_00: Like, let's take our friends on tour.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: It didn't matter who was co- or second or headline, it was like we're all doing the same thing, we're all doing this, and now it's you see less and less of like these bands that used to tour together all the time touring together because they're like, oh well, well, we're bigger than this.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: And then and now you're like not letting the fans see these things because you don't want to do a co-headliner, or you are worried about this numerical system, so now you're not bringing out your friends as an opener to help them get bigger because this band had a TikTok video that did one million views.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: And I think that that kind of mentality is really where this dog eat dog kind of thing comes from.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: And because I've I've always just not ever understood it.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: Because I it's like, why would you not?
- 41:22SPEAKER_00: It used to be to me it outside looking in, it used to look like friends helping friends come up, and now it seems like, well, what's gonna make?
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: Like if you're already doing a headliner, you should already have the numbers there if you're doing a headliner, you know what I'm saying?
- 41:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so why are you concerned about what the number one band is bringing?
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: Why wouldn't you bring out some homies that that you want to see flourish?
- 41:43SPEAKER_00: And I think that's where there's a lot of um separation in some of the music world right now is because everybody's so worried about X numbers and this numbers and not creating these genuine connections as they used to be.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: And I don't know, that's just something that I've I see.
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: You said the dog eat dog thing, and it's like I wanted to say that because don't be a band that comes in and be too cool to bring your friends out on tour.
- 42:07SPEAKER_00: Don't be corny, be cool.
- 42:09SPEAKER_00: Like that's why that's why I've I love a day to remember so much, bro.
- 42:12SPEAKER_00: Like, those dudes still bring out young hardcore bands, like those dudes will still bring out Ghost Inside, they're another one of them.
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 42:19SPEAKER_00: Um, like that's that shit's cool.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: Like the OG shit where they bring the the younger bands up and like just people that are friends.
- 42:25SPEAKER_00: Like, I think that is so cool.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: So it's like I I think getting over that ego wall is is definitely where a doggy dog will be.
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: Champion the underdogs, man, because we were all there.
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: Champion friends, bring your friends up, everybody eats, you know what I'm saying?
- 42:38SPEAKER_00: If you're eating, everybody eats.
- 42:39SPEAKER_04: The same with like boundaries, they had we were just out with them, and it was the same thing with them.
- 42:43SPEAKER_04: They're like young, like climbing, you know, and they're just killing it, but like they bring it, you know what I mean?
- 42:49SPEAKER_04: And it was it's like you're never too cool.
- 42:50SPEAKER_04: Right, okay, they remember does all these huge bands will like bring out a band you like too.
- 42:55SPEAKER_04: Facts.
- 42:56SPEAKER_04: It doesn't have to be necessarily like the biggest thing in the world.
- 42:59SPEAKER_04: Like, who do you like?
- 43:00SPEAKER_00: Like if you're headlining, your numbers are already gonna be there.
- 43:02SPEAKER_00: You ain't gotta worry about what the one spot is bringing to your tour.
- 43:05SPEAKER_00: Like that the same hundred kids that that one spot's gonna bring are already fans of your band.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: It's like why not bring out your homies and help them get something?
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 43:13SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's maybe I just think weird, you know.
- 43:15SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I just I wanted to say that just because like for any new kids that are coming up, like if your band starts to see success, don't for don't forget your homies.
- 43:23SPEAKER_00: Like if your band is seeing success and your homies are here, like bring them on your tour, man.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: Go go have fun and tour with some new instead of bringing a band that you don't know that you don't know if you're gonna get along with and whatever.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: But like, I don't know.
- 43:36SPEAKER_00: Keep it in the family, I guess.
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: Not all the time, obviously.
- 43:39SPEAKER_00: There's definitely gonna be a business movie, there's time to place, but well, dudes, thank you so much for sharing your advice, man.
- 43:44SPEAKER_03: This is awesome.
- 43:45SPEAKER_03: Just like anytime, bro.
- 43:46SPEAKER_03: Happy to be here.
- 43:47SPEAKER_00: This is great, dude.
- 43:47SPEAKER_03: Lots more to come with both these dudes, man.
- 43:49SPEAKER_03: We're gonna be doing some stuff with Alex, I'm sure, throughout the year, and yeah, we got some plans with Cody that you guys need to keep an eye out for.
- 43:55SPEAKER_03: So thank you guys both so much for it.
- 43:58SPEAKER_04: Thank you, man.
- 43:58SPEAKER_04: Heck yeah, love it.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Thanks for having us, guys.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: Nice to meet you all.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: I hope uh we helped you learn anything.
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: Either way, we had a fun day hanging.
- 44:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm sure we had fun.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: I hope you had fun.
- 44:10SPEAKER_00: I had fun.
- 44:11SPEAKER_00: I had fun.
- 44:14SPEAKER_04: Anything on this important?
