- 0:20Tyce: Hey folks.
- 0:20Tyce: Welcome back to the Bird Dog podcast.
- 0:22Tyce: This is part two of our grouse hunt opening day grouse hunt.
- 0:28Tyce: And, uh, we're all back in the truck now and headed down out of the mountains and we almost lost.
- 0:35Tyce: Ian put me there for a minute.
- 0:37Tyce: You had me in the first half, but we're good.
- 0:39Tyce: We did lose Ian.
- 0:41Tyce: We did lose Ian.
- 0:43Tyce: I always just went on a walkabout.
- 0:44Tyce: So let's, uh, let's talk about tips for listeners.
- 0:47Tyce: What should you do when you go grouse hunting in thick woods?
- 0:50Tyce: Hey, mark Onyx map.
- 0:52Tyce: Mark the truck, everyone.
- 0:53Tyce: Mark OnX on the truck.
- 0:55Tyce: Everyone do it separately.
- 0:57Tyce: Don't trust Tyson direct so anybody can find it.
- 0:59Tyce: It's just a good tip is, uh, yeah, mark your truck when you leave on your Onyx maps.
- 1:05Tyce: If you have Onyx, um, especially if you go hunting with friends that you haven't been to that area, you're not familiar with that area.
- 1:12Tyce: Um,'cause we were in really thick quakes and pines and, um, it was easy to get turned around.
- 1:17Tyce: So we did recover Ian, he was good.
- 1:21Tyce: he didn't, uh, He didn't die.
- 1:23Tyce: We had to shoot the gut a couple times and honk the horn, but these guys were throwing me off, driving around just like a good homing pigeon.
- 1:29Tyce: He made it home, so he made it So Orland, have you now been dive virginized when it comes to grow hunting?
- 1:35Tyce: Yeah, he just, uh, first one just ground pounded him.
- 1:39Tyce: I shot two today, so pretty awesome experience.
- 1:42Tyce: It's different hunting.
- 1:44Tyce: Like just thick, nasty crap.
- 1:47Tyce: I mean, yeah, today wasn't ideal.
- 1:50Tyce: It's raining right now and started raining.
- 1:53Tyce: right when we pulled up here.
- 1:54Tyce: So yeah, I mean, if you saw us all right, now everyone's wet from head to toe at Puddles.
- 2:00Tyce: Jeff's not Jeff brought his rain jacket.
- 2:03Tyce: We didn't realize it was gonna rain today.
- 2:05Tyce: Jeff's the adult here and uh, so we ended up with nine birds.
- 2:09Tyce: Total in about a three.
- 2:12Tyce: It was about three hour hunt roughly.
- 2:15Tyce: Sure.
- 2:16Tyce: Call it three hours.
- 2:17Tyce: So three, four hours.
- 2:17Tyce: So it was pretty good, pretty good Action.
- 2:19Tyce: We got in some cubbies so we kind of got in a big line, spread out and with.
- 2:23Tyce: In the grouse woods.
- 2:24Tyce: It's kind of crazy'cause it's so thick.
- 2:26Tyce: You gotta really talk to, um, your party and be able to yell back and forth and kind of stay in voice range.
- 2:32Tyce: 'cause those birds, they come up, they just go wherever.
- 2:35Tyce: And last thing you want to do is, shoot someone.
- 2:37Tyce: But Mike and I were kind of working together when we found the first group of birds.
- 2:42Tyce: We only got, there were three in that, that came up.
- 2:45Tyce: Mike's g s p, Hika got into'em and, uh, We knocked two down out of that group.
- 2:52Tyce: And then what was the next group we got?
- 2:55Tyce: Oh, then we met up on a kind of, an avalanche chute type thing where the water had come down through and there were some willows and, on the edge of the willows, the tree line.
- 3:05Tyce: We got into a covey.
- 3:06Tyce: How many was that?
- 3:07Tyce: I think we were all together.
- 3:08Tyce: Three outta there.
- 3:10Tyce: Is there, was there three, four?
- 3:11Tyce: Was there four or five birds or something?
- 3:13Tyce: Yeah.
- 3:13Tyce: So got in another group.
- 3:15Tyce: Yeah, we got three birds out of that group and then, kept working down through the mountain in Orland.
- 3:22Tyce: You wanna tell us what you want into a group?
- 3:24Tyce: I mean, we just kept going through that mountain and then, I mean, we got up through into ravine and.
- 3:30Tyce: Um, it started getting really wet, raining and we're bushwalking through willows and, Ian and I and, uh, Ty met up and I looked under the tree and there's this, oh yeah, this stud grouse.
- 3:43Tyce: He was a male grouse just sitting there on the log, just hunkered up underneath the rain and so outta the rain until rain, until we got the dogs in there.
- 3:51Tyce: They were sniffing it out, pushed it out, and then I took a whiff and miss it was like 10 feet from me.
- 3:57Tyce: Quick shot you were going.
- 3:59Tyce: 12 gauge.
- 4:00Tyce: Yeah, it would've been nothing.
- 4:01Tyce: It was tactical.
- 4:02Tyce: Nothing left.
- 4:03Tyce: So good thing I didn't, and then we kind of just went up the hill and hunted a little bit more up in there.
- 4:08Tyce: And then, uh, Ian just smoked him.
- 4:11Tyce: So the old 20 gauge, it was good.
- 4:13Tyce: Yeah.
- 4:14Tyce: Oh, did you drop that one?
- 4:15Tyce: Mm-hmm.
- 4:15Tyce: Yep.
- 4:15Tyce: Nice work.
- 4:16Tyce: So just before that, we were working down along a river and one came out and kind of went back into the trees.
- 4:22Tyce: I'm not sure if that was that one, that there was one just before that one that Orland was talking about.
- 4:27Tyce: We got, but that one got away.
- 4:28Tyce: How many do we think got away?
- 4:29Tyce: Four or five maybe.
- 4:30Tyce: Yeah.
- 4:32Tyce: Total today.
- 4:33Tyce: Probably at least four or five.
- 4:35Tyce: Yeah, maybe at least four.
- 4:36Tyce: And then Orland, you.
- 4:37Tyce: Were working down and got into a, oh yeah, got a cve right?
- 4:40Tyce: Six or so, got down into a cubby and, um, there was probably six or seven of'em just staring at me as I'm tripping over logs and stuff.
- 4:48Tyce: But they ended up, started working up the hill back towards the guys, and I just started yelling, get over here, but we couldn't even hear you.
- 4:56Tyce: Yeah, The birds just kind of walked up the hill and I shot one and then, um, one flew over and.
- 5:02Tyce: We shot that one too, so yeah.
- 5:05Tyce: Pretty good.
- 5:05Tyce: Then there's another one with, we were working down in, and Mike, well one came up in front of you, Ika, and then Haika got a beautiful point on Juan, and, and we didn't get up there in time.
- 5:16Tyce: the bird wasn't having it and took off though, so.
- 5:21Tyce: Yeah, I think overall it was a good hunt.
- 5:23Tyce: Um, tons of deadfall.
- 5:26Tyce: There was a lot of trees that had fallen over.
- 5:29Tyce: Um, Jeff was the only one to bring his jacket.
- 5:32Tyce: Jeff, what do you have to say?
- 5:33Tyce: Any comments tell us your experience, your feelings on the grouse hunt this morning?
- 5:37Tyce: I'm happy to not have any injury that I can.
- 5:40Tyce: Tell right now, I'll probably find a bunch of scrapes on my legs, but, um, I only fell a couple times.
- 5:47Tyce: It's fine.
- 5:49Tyce: Uh, the dogs did really well.
- 5:51Tyce: Surprised, only lost one for like 10 minutes, but then found her.
- 5:55Tyce: But, uh, overall I'm pleased with how everything went.
- 5:59Tyce: Ian, what's your comments on opening day of grouse on 2023?
- 6:04Tyce: That was fun.
- 6:04Tyce: Just a lot of hiking around, walk.
- 6:06Tyce: Walking around tripping over trees.
- 6:09Tyce: Yeah, it was, uh, eventful.
- 6:11Tyce: It was good to see as many grass as we saw, so that was pretty nice.
- 6:16Tyce: Yeah.
- 6:16Tyce: It sucks when you go up there and you've seen nothing.
- 6:18Tyce: Just going for a hike rather than a hunt.
- 6:20Tyce: So I'm glad we got to hunt.
- 6:22Tyce: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 6:24Tyce: Mike, it's a good morning.
- 6:26Tyce: That to Mike.
- 6:27Tyce: There you go.
- 6:28Tyce: It was a good morning.
- 6:29Tyce: And given the conditions, lots of rain.
- 6:31Tyce: Yeah.
- 6:32Tyce: Everything's wet.
- 6:33Tyce: Um, I think we were fortunate to see as many birds as we did and shoot as many as we did.
- 6:38Tyce: Yeah.
- 6:38Tyce: But, um, I think we need to get back up there when it's sunny.
- 6:41Tyce: When it's dry.
- 6:42Tyce: Yeah.
- 6:42Tyce: And see what the bird numbers are really.
- 6:44Tyce: Cover was thick ground, was slick.
- 6:48Tyce: All of us fell.
- 6:49Tyce: Probably all of us fell several times.
- 6:51Tyce: Multiple times.
- 6:52Tyce: Yeah.
- 6:52Tyce: Dog work was really good.
- 6:54Tyce: Yeah, it's always fun watching those dogs run.
- 6:56Tyce: I love watching just the energy of the, short hairs.
- 7:00Tyce: Yeah.
- 7:00Tyce: And they just have fun.
- 7:01Tyce: Yeah.
- 7:02Tyce: Yeah, I think overall ties it was good.
- 7:04Tyce: Yeah.
- 7:05Tyce: I think just, from the bird count, from what we were seeing, it's looking good so far, at least in this little pocket that we went into.
- 7:11Tyce: I hadn't hunted it for a couple years and always had found birds.
- 7:15Tyce: But like Mike was saying, I think with this rain, And to be able to knock nine birds out in a few hours, that's a pretty good hunt.
- 7:23Tyce: I think a lot of the birds were really hunkered down in the trees in the real thick cover to stay dry.
- 7:28Tyce: So anyhow, folks, that's part two.
- 7:31Tyce: Thanks for listening.
- 7:32Tyce: Get out there, get your dogs out.
- 7:33Tyce: We had a bunch of young dogs out today and there was their first time jumping, getting in that type of cover.
- 7:39Tyce: So it's a little bit of a learning experience, but every time you get your dog out, they're just gonna get better and better.
- 7:45Tyce: Haika.
- 7:45Tyce: She's the oldest dog here, the G S P, and it was her first grouse hunt, but she had some points and just her experience really proved It pays off to get your dog on birds.
- 7:55Tyce: So good luck hunting the hunts have started.
- 7:58Tyce: It's a great time of year to be out in outdoors and in the mountains, and we'll see you on the next show.
