- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, I'm Marta Kristen, and you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Movie Meltdown.
- 0:23Speaker 3: It's showtime. The following feature has been rated R by
- 0:27Speaker 3: the Motion Picture Association of America. It is intended for
- 0:30Speaker 3: mature audiences and parental discretion is advised. Our nuclear reactor
- 0:36Speaker 3: pumping out one million kilowatts of power. Provide more cooling
- 1:05Speaker 3: in the containment chamber.
- 1:06Speaker 4: To your citizens, we have a movie meltdown.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Well, you've proven yourself to be a pain in the neck,
- 1:11Speaker 3: so why don't you just fly off?
- 1:22Speaker 5: What's up, and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I am Brian,
- 1:24Speaker 5: and once again, through the magic of the internet, joining
- 1:27Speaker 5: me is... Sam!
- 1:28Speaker 2: Drag. eating some pizza i'm sorry.
- 1:32Speaker 5: Well i mean we're refueling we are uh midway in
- 1:37Speaker 5: i assume you're also loaded up with coffee by now
- 1:40Speaker 5: so yeah buddy the return of the caffeinated movie geek
- 1:43Speaker 5: because we're we're both fueled up and we've already you
- 1:47Speaker 5: know i'm i'm assuming you've listened to the last episode
- 1:50Speaker 5: where we went on and on about um some charming
- 1:54Speaker 5: films yes uh Aside from my crazy body swapping movie,
- 1:59Speaker 5: we finished up with a sort of a love letter
- 2:02Speaker 5: to very low budget. This one in particular sci-fi movie.
- 2:09Speaker 5: So as we rounded that out, I was like, well,
- 2:11Speaker 5: I'd like to swing the pendulum all the way to
- 2:14Speaker 5: the other end. And another one that I'd watched all
- 2:17Speaker 5: of my own free will. And then you mentioned that
- 2:20Speaker 5: you'd seen. I was like, oh, well, then we definitely
- 2:22Speaker 5: need to dig into this.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Boom.
- 2:24Speaker 5: So as we get back into it here, we I
- 2:29Speaker 5: guess should just jump into it and discuss the recent release.
- 2:35Speaker 5: It really didn't even for normal people didn't even go
- 2:38Speaker 5: to theaters. It just jumped right to Netflix. The recent
- 2:41Speaker 5: film Rebel Moon. Boom.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Rebel Moon.
- 2:46Speaker 4: It's time for Sofa Theater.
- 2:52Speaker 5: When I found you in the wreckage of that ship,
- 2:57Speaker 5: I considered leaving you. I was afraid you could bring
- 3:00Speaker 5: trouble to us.
- 3:12Speaker 2: What do you think they want?
- 3:28Speaker 3: We're just farmers.
- 3:29Speaker 6: We're not a threat.
- 3:31Speaker 1: They won't just kill us, will they?
- 3:36Speaker 7: We're delusional.
- 3:38Speaker 5: You think those soldiers will show them mercy?
- 3:40Speaker 1: Stop.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Stop.
- 3:58Speaker 5: We're gonna have to fight. I am a child of war.
- 4:08Speaker 5: I find warriors to fight with us. We might stand
- 4:11Speaker 5: a chance.
- 4:15Speaker 3: We're searching for soldiers for a fight against the Motherworld.
- 4:20Speaker 2: I could help you.
- 4:23Speaker 5: For a small fee, obviously. You may want to hold.
- 4:31Speaker 8: On.
- 4:32Speaker 5: I'm here to make you an offer.
- 4:35Speaker 4: To give you a chance at redemption.
- 4:39Speaker 2: We are beyond redemption. What about revenge? This isn't just
- 4:48Speaker 2: pursuit of revolution.
- 4:57Speaker 4: I have found her.
- 4:58Speaker 2: The most wanted fugitive in the known universe. It's a
- 5:22Speaker 2: new age for the universe.
- 5:55Speaker 5: Do you remember the subsection title? Because it has a
- 5:58Speaker 5: whole other title that, again, I feel like will be
- 6:01Speaker 5: forgotten for all time.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Right. Rebel moon. So child, a child of the moon
- 6:06Speaker 2: or something, or moonshot.
- 6:08Speaker 5: Part one, a child of fire.
- 6:10Speaker 2: A child of fire.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:14Speaker 5: But don't you feel like it's trouble when the movie
- 6:18Speaker 5: is title colon part one. Oh, when they know ahead
- 6:22Speaker 5: of time that there's a part one, like, I don't know.
- 6:25Speaker 5: Do you think that adds a problematic thing to this scenario? Like,
- 6:32Speaker 5: would we have had Slave Girls from Beyond Infinity, colon,
- 6:35Speaker 5: part one?
- 6:36Speaker 2: Oh, okay. Well, if you know, well, I think it's
- 6:40Speaker 2: fine if you know you've got it in the can.
- 6:43Speaker 2: You know, you wouldn't want to call it Superman part one,
- 6:46Speaker 2: you know, but.
- 6:47Speaker 5: I feel like it was a joke when, like, History
- 6:49Speaker 5: of the World did it.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 6:52Speaker 5: Mel Brooks is a comedic genius, and he was like,
- 6:54Speaker 5: wouldn't it be funny if we slapped part one on this?
- 6:56Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 6:57Speaker 5: But now we do it unironically. That's true.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Now we do it.
- 7:01Speaker 5: Incomplete and utter yep i made a giant thing and
- 7:04Speaker 5: you're gonna.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Watch all of it because i said so yeah that's
- 7:07Speaker 2: true it's it's very uh presumptuous of them isn't it.
- 7:12Speaker 5: I feel like it is both of netflix and our
- 7:15Speaker 5: pal zack snyder.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Zack snyder and so now after extolling in the last
- 7:21Speaker 2: episode uh the the cinematic stylings of the genius, Mick
- 7:27Speaker 2: G I'm going to further destroy my credibility as somebody
- 7:32Speaker 2: you should listen to about filmmaking by saying that I
- 7:36Speaker 2: really do like Zack Snyder as a filmmaker and And as, like,
- 7:43Speaker 2: a visual storyteller.
- 7:45Speaker 5: Well, this episode's over. All right.
- 7:47Speaker 2: So, I know. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. I know.
- 7:50Speaker 8: I know.
- 7:51Speaker 5: That really is why I wanted to do this. Because
- 7:54Speaker 5: we didn't really say much beforehand, but I got the
- 7:57Speaker 5: impression that you liked it. And I was like, wow,
- 8:00Speaker 5: that is so different from where I'm coming from. So, like,
- 8:03Speaker 5: I kind of want to hear both sides of this.
- 8:06Speaker 2: All right.
- 8:07Speaker 7: All right.
- 8:08Speaker 5: I watched it and I had a very many, very
- 8:11Speaker 5: specific responses and I was just like, huh? So I
- 8:14Speaker 5: landed kind of the other direction to some extent. So
- 8:19Speaker 5: I definitely want to hear what your take on it is.
- 8:21Speaker 2: All right.
- 8:22Speaker 5: Okay.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Well, I'll just get into it then because look, is
- 8:28Speaker 2: Zack Snyder, you know, Stanley Cooper or some, some, you know,
- 8:33Speaker 2: is he like, you know, is, are his movies fantastic?
- 8:38Speaker 2: I would say no. But I would say I think
- 8:41Speaker 2: he's a fan. There is something about his movies. Sometimes,
- 8:44Speaker 2: you know, watching like Man of Steel, I was going like, man,
- 8:48Speaker 2: Zack Snyder underlines, highlights, italicizes, and puts 15 exclamation points
- 8:58Speaker 2: in all caps on everything he does.
- 9:01Speaker 5: He has a distinctive style. I will give you that.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Yeah, it has like a certain... You know, just everything's
- 9:09Speaker 2: so emphasized that it's, like, this heightened thing. And, you know,
- 9:16Speaker 2: there is no, like, Evan Flo in his movies. It's, like,
- 9:20Speaker 2: everything has, like, this kind of super hyper-intensified reality to that,
- 9:30Speaker 2: you know, you go, like, whoa. And, you know, it's, like, to...
- 9:35Speaker 2: worse extent in like something like sucker punch which is
- 9:37Speaker 2: just all style and visual which but with with a
- 9:41Speaker 2: story that's incomprehensible.
- 9:43Speaker 5: But then that's maybe my favorite of.
- 9:46Speaker 6: His i think it's like it's also ridiculous but there's
- 9:50Speaker 6: so much to it that i'm like i don't know
- 9:54Speaker 6: i kind of got to give him credit for that
- 9:55Speaker 6: that at least like is it it's still i was
- 9:58Speaker 6: i would say.
- 9:59Speaker 5: It's his most original because he usually was covering other
- 10:02Speaker 5: people's material before and after that. But like, this is
- 10:06Speaker 5: his most original concept. But at the same time, like
- 10:09Speaker 5: once you dig into it, like, well, none of it is.
- 10:11Speaker 5: It's here's a, a mini episode of this thing that
- 10:14Speaker 5: already existed in this thing that already existed. So yeah,
- 10:17Speaker 5: it's like, it's just him. taking his things that he's
- 10:20Speaker 5: interested in and then cramming them all into a movie
- 10:22Speaker 5: together and having no real through line.
- 10:25Speaker 2: That's right.
- 10:25Speaker 5: It's supposed to have a framework of why this is
- 10:28Speaker 5: like this, but it barely does. You're just kind of like, eh, whatever.
- 10:32Speaker 5: These visuals look cool. And then you ride that out.
- 10:35Speaker 2: And, and you know, the visuals do look cool.
- 10:38Speaker 5: So you can't argue that the man doesn't have taste.
- 10:44Speaker 3: All right.
- 10:45Speaker 5: He has style.
- 10:47Speaker 2: He has style.
- 10:48Speaker 5: I don't know that he has taste, but he has style. Okay.
- 10:51Speaker 2: He has style.
- 10:52Speaker 5: He definitely has style.
- 10:53Speaker 2: And I like his style. I like how he makes movies.
- 10:58Speaker 2: If I feel like the scripts and everything, I'm maybe
- 11:02Speaker 2: not the biggest David Goyer fan. And there's just things
- 11:08Speaker 2: in his movies that... that it seems like more of
- 11:10Speaker 2: a screenplay. I know the guy, you know, develops a
- 11:13Speaker 2: screenplay with them. So he said, it's fine that that's
- 11:15Speaker 2: in the screenplay. So, so there's times where I go like,
- 11:19Speaker 2: oh man, but as just a, such a completely layered
- 11:24Speaker 2: piece of visual piece of what is a piece of
- 11:31Speaker 2: piece of visual visual, the visuals in his movies have
- 11:35Speaker 2: a certain level of detail to them that i know
- 11:41Speaker 2: it's not zach working away in his garage making these
- 11:45Speaker 2: things or drawing these things he has probably an army
- 11:49Speaker 2: of uh you know art directors and designers and.
- 11:52Speaker 5: He would have to for these visuals for these visuals
- 11:55Speaker 5: right armies of like visual people working for him that
- 11:59Speaker 5: are putting these together the people can't even be in
- 12:02Speaker 5: the room when he's shooting half of this stuff so
- 12:04Speaker 5: it's like it's a different style just to put that
- 12:08Speaker 5: sort of thing together.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Right.
- 12:10Speaker 2: And he has to be with all that information coming in.
- 12:13Speaker 2: He's got the resources to hire the best of the best,
- 12:15Speaker 2: but he, he gets to be the final boss. uh
- 12:18Speaker 2: curator he.
- 12:20Speaker 5: Is an auteur that's yeah he isn't oh we're coming
- 12:23Speaker 5: kind of director you can't just throw anything at him
- 12:26Speaker 5: and it's gonna come out looking generic right no offense
- 12:29Speaker 5: to mcg no right which was kind of our takeaway
- 12:33Speaker 5: on the last one like right they just handed him
- 12:35Speaker 5: a project he cashed a paycheck it looks like a
- 12:38Speaker 5: made for tv project yeah in its direction really and
- 12:41Speaker 5: like no offense to him it's it's fine, but like,
- 12:45Speaker 5: you're not going to get that from Zack Snyder. You
- 12:47Speaker 5: cannot hand him that and get back something that could
- 12:49Speaker 5: be identified as anything else, but a Zack Snyder project.
- 12:53Speaker 5: Like exactly.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 12:54Speaker 5: That's what he does. He just exudes and oozes the
- 12:58Speaker 5: stuff all over.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Pretty much. Yeah. Okay.
- 13:01Speaker 8: Okay.
- 13:02Speaker 5: So I think maybe.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Your criticism to the movie, but how you just described
- 13:06Speaker 2: it for me was the movie. All right. But, but yeah,
- 13:10Speaker 2: that for your point, Zack Snyder movies, you can never
- 13:14Speaker 2: say he phoned it in, you know? No, I mean.
- 13:19Speaker 5: not visually no no no in other aspects i feel
- 13:22Speaker 5: like he does but well i don't know that he's
- 13:24Speaker 5: phoning it's like he's sacrificing one for the other he's
- 13:27Speaker 5: like i'm not gonna worry about this part so that
- 13:29Speaker 5: i can focus so much right i can laser focus
- 13:33Speaker 5: on this part right here which is these amazing visuals
- 13:36Speaker 5: that's this great fight choreography this action scene like i'm
- 13:39Speaker 5: gonna focus on these things so much that i really
- 13:42Speaker 5: don't care about what's going on over here that's just
- 13:44Speaker 5: like Character development.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 13:48Speaker 5: Or creating a story that makes any sense.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 13:52Speaker 5: Sure, sure.
- 13:53Speaker 2: It's... Right, right. So, yeah. You know, he knows where
- 13:57Speaker 2: his strengths are, you know, and he pours it into that.
- 14:00Speaker 2: But for me, it's like they're all really swing-for-the-fences kind
- 14:06Speaker 2: of movies, you know, for me. And, you know, the... Sure, the.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Believable character motivations like Kevin Costner just saying like, oh, don't, don't,
- 14:17Speaker 2: save me from this tornado.
- 14:20Speaker 5: I'm just going to stand here and get sucked up
- 14:21Speaker 5: by a tornado because that's what the script needs.
- 14:25Speaker 2: And it looks cool. And Zack Snyder is going to
- 14:27Speaker 2: shoot the hell out of it and make it this
- 14:29Speaker 2: like iconic Kevin Costner image, you know, I'm going to
- 14:33Speaker 2: be blown away.
- 14:34Speaker 5: But no, I think it also is that when I
- 14:36Speaker 5: just like it, it's because the script needs this to
- 14:38Speaker 5: get to the next part. I'm going to do it.
- 14:41Speaker 5: It doesn't necessarily make sense from my characters. And that's
- 14:44Speaker 5: what we end up with this. Like, Right. If we're
- 14:47Speaker 5: jumping into some of the issues, I feel like there's
- 14:49Speaker 5: so much of it that is like, well, why are
- 14:51Speaker 5: they doing that? Cause they need to do that to
- 14:53Speaker 5: get them the next part. How are we going to
- 14:55Speaker 5: get to the end of this part of the movie?
- 14:56Speaker 5: If we don't get through this part in the middle
- 14:58Speaker 5: that it says right here, we got to go pick
- 15:00Speaker 5: up all the people so we can have a fight.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Right.
- 15:03Speaker 5: So I feel like there's so much of it that
- 15:05Speaker 5: is just, why is it like this? Because it needs
- 15:08Speaker 5: to be good enough. Moving on.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Right.
- 15:11Speaker 5: Well, shoot the next scene. Right.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Right.
- 15:13Speaker 5: Okay.
- 15:13Speaker 3: All right.
- 15:14Speaker 2: So, Yeah, the movie is trapped in the genre, okay?
- 15:19Speaker 2: It is trapped in trying to be a very specific thing,
- 15:23Speaker 2: and it is borrowed, to say that this movie borrows,
- 15:27Speaker 2: but it, so, yeah, yes, it's got the Hollywood plot of, like,
- 15:34Speaker 2: the seven samurai going on for it, right?
- 15:36Speaker 5: That's what I was going to say. We can say
- 15:37Speaker 5: it's a knockoff Star Wars. I mean, Star Wars knocks
- 15:39Speaker 5: off from the best stuff ever, too, so it's not
- 15:42Speaker 5: like Star Wars is above that. but it also literally
- 15:46Speaker 5: is a knockoff star Wars. It was a star war,
- 15:48Speaker 5: an R rated star Wars script that was pitched to
- 15:51Speaker 5: Disney and Disney went, uh, no. And then he went fine.
- 15:55Speaker 5: I'm a Zack Snyder. I'll make it myself. I don't
- 15:57Speaker 5: need you. So he went to Netflix or however the
- 16:00Speaker 5: process happened. I won't really know. I just know it
- 16:03Speaker 5: was literally a rejected star Wars script that they were like,
- 16:07Speaker 5: we're not going to let Zack Snyder make a star
- 16:08Speaker 5: Wars movie. And he just went and did it himself.
- 16:12Speaker 2: And I think, uh, that's bad-ass.
- 16:16Speaker 5: And I think, uh, I like the spirit of that.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Okay.
- 16:22Speaker 5: Okay.
- 16:23Speaker 2: And now we were on a flashback to free, uh, free, uh, uh,
- 16:30Speaker 2: sequel trilogy, star Wars. Okay. And we're going to, I, I,
- 16:36Speaker 2: the scene is I'm at a friend's house and we're
- 16:40Speaker 2: hanging out in the backyard and, And we're talking about,
- 16:43Speaker 2: you know, possible more Star Wars movies and how, you know,
- 16:48Speaker 2: the goodwill has been burnt down by the prequels.
- 16:52Speaker 5: And yeah.
- 16:53Speaker 2: And so, you know, we really do have, they've got
- 16:56Speaker 2: a lot of work to do to, to fix Star Wars.
- 17:01Speaker 2: And I told, I told my friend, I said like,
- 17:04Speaker 2: if they, it wouldn't take much if we just get
- 17:09Speaker 2: like somebody, you know, really like, Like, a good script. Like,
- 17:14Speaker 2: if you knew Lawrence Kasdan was writing the next Star Wars,
- 17:17Speaker 2: wouldn't you just be there immediately? You know?
- 17:20Speaker 5: Put me on board. I'll pre-buy that ticket.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Right. Exactly. And that's what they did. So, you know,
- 17:25Speaker 2: that's something they did right. Right? They brought back Kasdan
- 17:29Speaker 2: to work on it. And, man, it got us into
- 17:32Speaker 2: the theater. It was definitely there. We want to forgive.
- 17:35Speaker 2: We want to forgive.
- 17:36Speaker 5: We love the source so much.
- 17:38Speaker 3: Right.
- 17:39Speaker 5: We'll be willing to forgive past cinema sins to get
- 17:44Speaker 5: to this new possibilities of what we could have Star
- 17:48Speaker 5: Wars on the big screen again.
- 17:49Speaker 2: That's right. That's right. All is forgiven. Just come back.
- 17:52Speaker 2: It's like the prodigal son. Or it's like, you know,
- 17:54Speaker 2: a rocky relationship.
- 17:56Speaker 8: Which, I mean.
- 17:57Speaker 5: our like four hour episode of that first movie that
- 18:00Speaker 5: we did. That's pretty much what I said. I was like,
- 18:03Speaker 5: he just hit reset. It's like, again, talk about sort
- 18:06Speaker 5: of an opposite version of a director. They gave it
- 18:08Speaker 5: to JJ and JJ is like, look, I know what
- 18:10Speaker 5: you guys want. I know what you're mad about from
- 18:13Speaker 5: the last one. I'm going to take all that into
- 18:15Speaker 5: account and just kind of give you what you want.
- 18:18Speaker 5: I'm going to hand you exactly what you want. He's
- 18:21Speaker 5: also a very visual stylized kind of a guy, but
- 18:24Speaker 5: he's not afraid to cash a check and tow the company.
- 18:28Speaker 2: That's right.
- 18:29Speaker 5: That's something that is different. Zack Snyder is not going
- 18:31Speaker 5: to do that. Zack Snyder is going to deliver Zack
- 18:33Speaker 5: Snyder no matter what. JJ will be like, what do
- 18:36Speaker 5: you guys need?
- 18:37Speaker 7: Fine.
- 18:37Speaker 5: I can do that. I will deliver and I will
- 18:40Speaker 5: cash that check and we will rebuild this whole new
- 18:44Speaker 5: Trilogy of films.
- 18:45Speaker 2: It's so funny. It's like you're going like, hey, you
- 18:48Speaker 2: got a problem. I got a problem. We both got
- 18:50Speaker 2: this problem here, you know?
- 18:53Speaker 5: I can fix it and get us all a lot
- 18:55Speaker 5: of money. Get us all a lot of money. So again, that,
- 19:01Speaker 5: that is something that happened that first movie. And he,
- 19:04Speaker 5: I think the first movie he did successfully, like it
- 19:07Speaker 5: rebooted it. It recaptured everything you loved about the first one,
- 19:11Speaker 5: almost to the point of remaking it at moments. But
- 19:14Speaker 5: at the same time, it brought a new characters. It
- 19:16Speaker 5: took us on a new road to tell kind of
- 19:19Speaker 5: different stories, but not too different because we want the
- 19:22Speaker 5: same thing.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Same thing again.
- 19:25Speaker 5: So like, it just barely varies it up a little bit,
- 19:28Speaker 5: but at the same time, it adds some new aspects
- 19:30Speaker 5: and it's like, okay, and go from there.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Right.
- 19:33Speaker 5: And everything was great from that point.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Everything.
- 19:36Speaker 5: Nothing else went wrong.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Nothing else went wrong. It just, it just, it was like,
- 19:41Speaker 2: it was like now when people talk Star Wars, they
- 19:44Speaker 2: think the, the, the sequel trilogy, they don't even consider
- 19:47Speaker 2: the first two trilogies. It was like, it was like, like, yeah,
- 19:51Speaker 2: there's those early six movies, but it's not really what
- 19:55Speaker 2: Star Wars is.
- 19:56Speaker 5: It didn't really come together and find the focus until
- 19:59Speaker 5: JJ got involved.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Right, right, right. Exactly. Until Rian Johnson really took the
- 20:04Speaker 2: series in bold new directions.
- 20:06Speaker 5: Powell drived it right in the middle. Like, screw you guys,
- 20:09Speaker 5: follow this movie. I like Rian Johnson.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Me too. And Last Jedi was my favorite of the
- 20:18Speaker 2: new ones.
- 20:18Speaker 5: Anyway, so we're moving on.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Strike three, Conkle, you're out.
- 20:27Speaker 5: I think Rian Johnson is the highest level you've reached
- 20:30Speaker 5: so far. Of the Zack Snyder McG trilogy there, I
- 20:35Speaker 5: think Rian Johnson's the best of them.
- 20:38Speaker 2: You may be right. Zack Snyder, and the other thing
- 20:41Speaker 2: I said to that guy's backyard was, Lawrence Kasdan, and
- 20:44Speaker 2: I said, then you give it to a really interesting
- 20:46Speaker 2: visual director like Zack Snyder. And so the Zack Snyder
- 20:52Speaker 2: thing with the sequel trilogies, that didn't happen. But I've, since,
- 20:59Speaker 2: I've always said, man, I would love, now, so I,
- 21:03Speaker 2: guess what? There is no bigger target audience for this
- 21:07Speaker 2: movie than me, who once said, man, I would love
- 21:10Speaker 2: to see what a Zack Snyder directed Star Wars movie
- 21:14Speaker 2: would be like. And it's almost like the A.I. Reached
- 21:19Speaker 2: into my head.
- 21:20Speaker 5: It heard you.
- 21:21Speaker 2: It heard me.
- 21:22Speaker 5: It's listening to everything you say. It is. On this
- 21:27Speaker 5: computer and your phone and microphones in your house.
- 21:30Speaker 2: It's almost like I've spoken to ChatGPT and said, Zack
- 21:35Speaker 2: Snyder's Star Wars movie.
- 21:37Speaker 3: Alexa!
- 21:37Speaker 5: Alexa! Make me as a movie, but I want Zack
- 21:41Speaker 5: Snyder to be visual stylist for George Lucas concept.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Go.
- 21:46Speaker 5: Let me know when it's ready. I'll sit down with
- 21:48Speaker 5: some popcorn. Thank you. Yeah, exactly.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Movie delivering in 32 seconds.
- 21:53Speaker 5: I mean, sadly, we're coming to that. I mean, as
- 21:57Speaker 5: someone who created really dumb AI artwork for our last
- 22:00Speaker 5: several episodes- I think I'll continue and try to find
- 22:04Speaker 5: like more blue monkeys eating popcorn or whatever, but it's
- 22:07Speaker 5: the same thing. Like I can, at least within a
- 22:09Speaker 5: still image, I can type in that kind of nonsense,
- 22:12Speaker 5: be like George Lucas. visuals, Zack Snyder, blah, blah, blah.
- 22:17Speaker 5: And it delivers this amalgam of nonsense that sort of
- 22:21Speaker 5: fits what you just said. And I'm like, that's where
- 22:24Speaker 5: we're going with film. We're getting to the point where
- 22:26Speaker 5: we're going to be able to do that somewhere in
- 22:27Speaker 5: the near future.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Yeah, for real, man. For real. So this was like
- 22:31Speaker 2: a peek into that where it was exactly the movie
- 22:35Speaker 2: I wanted it to be. So it was Zack Snyder-isms.
- 22:40Speaker 2: It had that it had that 18 dimensional depth of
- 22:47Speaker 2: art direction to it.
- 22:49Speaker 5: Yes.
- 22:49Speaker 2: That I just did that. I just get, I get
- 22:51Speaker 2: lost in and I can just watch that and a
- 22:56Speaker 2: really style it, you know, kind of like the blade
- 22:59Speaker 2: runner thing, you know, you just like to watch it.
- 23:01Speaker 2: You just like looking at it, you.
- 23:03Speaker 5: Know, I can live in the blade runner world. Like
- 23:06Speaker 5: I've seen, again, it is one of those, the crossover
- 23:09Speaker 5: into the physical world. I've seen them make Lego sets.
- 23:13Speaker 5: In the weird, because they're super like into the Ninjago
- 23:16Speaker 5: world and Ninjago world is like one shade away from
- 23:19Speaker 5: Blade Runner future to me. So I was like, I
- 23:21Speaker 5: kind of want to get those and just create my
- 23:23Speaker 5: own little Blade Runner world that you can have your
- 23:26Speaker 5: little knee figs running around. And that's kind of like,
- 23:29Speaker 5: it's that immersive in Blade Runner. I don't necessarily get
- 23:32Speaker 5: it with the Zack Snyder one, but, but I will
- 23:35Speaker 5: let you continue on.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Well, yeah, because it's all digital worlds, it's almost like,
- 23:40Speaker 2: it's not like Blade Runner where, You feel like you're there.
- 23:45Speaker 2: But I look at the images in these Zack Snyder
- 23:51Speaker 2: movies and in Rebel Moon and I see so much polish, thought, style,
- 24:01Speaker 2: effort into just like the design of it all that
- 24:08Speaker 2: sometimes that just really does become the whole experience for me.
- 24:15Speaker 2: You can see that.
- 24:17Speaker 5: Again, that's all there. It's almost like I was, again,
- 24:21Speaker 5: doing a little research on this. One of the people
- 24:23Speaker 5: that wrote a review of Rebel Moon was like, the movie,
- 24:27Speaker 5: not so much, but the art of Rebel Moon book
- 24:31Speaker 5: that's going to come out is going to be amazing.
- 24:35Speaker 5: As he said that, I was like, no, that's kind
- 24:37Speaker 5: of right. I was like, it's like, because I don't
- 24:39Speaker 5: even know how much where the crossover is of like
- 24:42Speaker 5: Zack Snyder coming with this versus somebody sitting in an
- 24:46Speaker 5: office doing sketches of concept art. And it's like, then
- 24:50Speaker 5: that concept art just gets put in a digital format
- 24:52Speaker 5: in the background of what they're doing. So it's like,
- 24:54Speaker 5: it almost feels like there's some visual artist somewhere that
- 24:57Speaker 5: was like given an assignment and he just nailed it
- 25:00Speaker 5: and came up with this amazing visual of super space
- 25:03Speaker 5: age looking stuff. And then they just sort of drop
- 25:05Speaker 5: it as a screensaver behind whatever they're shooting in front
- 25:08Speaker 5: of a green screen.
- 25:10Speaker 2: So you're so minimalizing that artist.
- 25:15Speaker 5: I think the artist is amazing, but I feel like
- 25:18Speaker 5: it's like what they're doing. I'm like, I don't know.
- 25:22Speaker 5: I wonder really, I don't know how much is Zack
- 25:25Speaker 5: Snyder personally delivering that versus somebody else is doing that work.
- 25:29Speaker 5: And then he just sort of approves it and was like, yeah,
- 25:31Speaker 5: this is my, my overall vision.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Right.
- 25:34Speaker 5: You know, and then this all gets put in there in,
- 25:37Speaker 5: between what he's sort of slapping together with the actors
- 25:40Speaker 5: you know it's like it's all way more pieced together
- 25:43Speaker 5: than we'll ever know as this astronomical sized entity you
- 25:48Speaker 5: know so yeah i i don't know i wonder when
- 25:51Speaker 5: we get into these like how much of it becomes
- 25:53Speaker 5: all these other because as we said he's employed of
- 25:56Speaker 5: hundreds and thousands of different artists that are involved in
- 26:00Speaker 5: so many different ways and like how much is them
- 26:03Speaker 5: coming up with these cool ideas versus the which is
- 26:05Speaker 5: the same thing. Star Wars. It's like, look how many
- 26:08Speaker 5: guys were putting together puppets. And George Lucas walked in
- 26:11Speaker 5: the room and went, Oh, I like that one. And
- 26:14Speaker 5: that one, but we're not going to use them for here.
- 26:15Speaker 5: We'll put them in a Admiral suit and we'll make
- 26:18Speaker 5: them Admiral Ackbar, which is how that happened. He's like, Oh,
- 26:20Speaker 5: that guy just looks cool. Let's put them in a
- 26:22Speaker 5: uniform and we'll put them on the ship. And so like,
- 26:24Speaker 5: It's the same thing. George Lucas isn't the overall mastermind
- 26:28Speaker 5: of everything ever created.
- 26:29Speaker 2: No.
- 26:30Speaker 5: He just built a great team and then went, yeah,
- 26:32Speaker 5: I like that. And I like that. And like, so
- 26:34Speaker 5: he's still the orchestrator of it.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Right. He curated it.
- 26:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:38Speaker 5: He's the curator of all these crazy things.
- 26:40Speaker 2: So I don't know.
- 26:41Speaker 5: Like, again, I start to wonder how many other people
- 26:45Speaker 5: almost get as much appreciation for creating this visual style
- 26:49Speaker 5: as Zack Snyder, which is also true of Lucas.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Right, right, right. Well, it's like Flash Gordon we were
- 26:54Speaker 2: talking about. I mean, the visual stylist on Flash Gordon
- 26:58Speaker 2: was basically the co-director.
- 27:01Speaker 5: The one running the show, really.
- 27:03Speaker 2: The one really setting the beat, you know? So, yeah, yeah.
- 27:08Speaker 2: I mean, I know he's got his groups behind him
- 27:12Speaker 2: and everything, but we'll just say the product that this
- 27:15Speaker 2: guy pulls together. from different things. I just think his
- 27:19Speaker 2: visuals are at a, I like the way he shoots.
- 27:23Speaker 2: I like the way his movies are cut and put
- 27:27Speaker 2: together and how they look. They got that great, you know,
- 27:30Speaker 2: 16 depth, uh, layer of detail to me when I
- 27:36Speaker 2: see him. And so, yeah, as much as I hate
- 27:38Speaker 2: sucker punch and, you know, and, and it's not like
- 27:43Speaker 2: I sit, but, and, It's not like I watch Zack
- 27:49Speaker 2: Snyder movies all the time, but when I watch them,
- 27:52Speaker 2: I go like, man, that guy really knows how to
- 27:56Speaker 2: shoot a... Shoot, shoot. The guy knows how to shoot
- 27:59Speaker 2: a movie.
- 27:59Speaker 5: Especially action scenes. It's one of those, and this I
- 28:03Speaker 5: will give for a lot of... I will question this.
- 28:06Speaker 5: On the one hand, you're going to like, I know
- 28:08Speaker 5: what pays my bills. I know what my fans want,
- 28:11Speaker 5: so I'm going to deliver it to them. I almost
- 28:13Speaker 5: feel like if you're an artists like once they're on
- 28:17Speaker 5: to you once they see what you're doing you should
- 28:20Speaker 5: almost throw that out and i say that also like
- 28:22Speaker 5: jj you know it's like jj we get the lens
- 28:25Speaker 5: flares so as soon as people started making fun of
- 28:28Speaker 5: that online he should have been like all right i'm
- 28:29Speaker 5: done with those uh let's do something else now.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Now i'm the lens flare guy same thing as.
- 28:33Speaker 5: Like zach snyder shows up i'm like really we're still
- 28:35Speaker 5: gonna do slow-mo and speed ramping still like yeah i
- 28:38Speaker 5: know people have been calling you out for decades yeah
- 28:42Speaker 5: since you started 300 or possibly before like people have
- 28:46Speaker 5: been making fun of that so it's like you're still
- 28:48Speaker 5: gonna do that like i'm like i get it your
- 28:50Speaker 5: bread's buttered right there i get it but at the
- 28:53Speaker 5: same time i'm like as an artist when you're gonna
- 28:55Speaker 5: be like all right they already know me for that
- 28:57Speaker 5: i'm gonna do something else you know like i feel
- 28:59Speaker 5: like you'd want to do something else well like he's
- 29:01Speaker 5: perfected it like when you watch those scenes it's like
- 29:04Speaker 5: yeah i get it like he's he knows how to
- 29:07Speaker 5: like choreograph those action scenes and speed it up at
- 29:09Speaker 5: just the right moment. Slow motion of guns firing. Okay.
- 29:15Speaker 2: All right. So as you described that, this is our,
- 29:19Speaker 2: this is our primary difference of this movie. Cause you're
- 29:22Speaker 2: going like yet another speed ramp.
- 29:26Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 29:26Speaker 2: And another slow motion gun firing. And when I, when
- 29:31Speaker 2: I think about that stuff, I go like, yes, yes.
- 29:35Speaker 2: Speed ramping.
- 29:36Speaker 5: Another speed ramping.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Slow motion gun firing.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Yes.
- 29:40Speaker 6: Yes!
- 29:40Speaker 2: You know, so I mean, this is maybe the thing.
- 29:43Speaker 2: So I'm sure Zack Snyder would love to make a
- 29:49Speaker 2: movie without speed ramping, slow motion gun firing. But then
- 29:53Speaker 2: he thinks, but what would Johnny Conkle do?
- 29:57Speaker 5: That's exactly it. What about the kids? What about the kids?
- 30:01Speaker 5: Average guys show up in the seat. Nobody goes to
- 30:04Speaker 5: seats anymore. Cause they're sitting at home. But if they
- 30:07Speaker 5: were gonna buy a ticket, would they buy a ticket without.
- 30:10Speaker 2: My speed ramping? And so it was like, he's, he's
- 30:12Speaker 2: almost like, I've decided I'm just going to do it.
- 30:15Speaker 2: I want to take out the speed ramp. And he's
- 30:16Speaker 2: coming outside of his hotel. And, uh, you know, kid
- 30:21Speaker 2: runs into him. He's like, yo, Zack Snyder, aren't ya?
- 30:23Speaker 2: It was like, yeah, you got it right kid. It
- 30:26Speaker 2: was like, I can't wait for your next movie with
- 30:28Speaker 2: the speed ramping.
- 30:30Speaker 5: He's like, well, I've decided I'm going to do rom-coms
- 30:32Speaker 5: from here on out. So tough luck, little Tommy.
- 30:36Speaker 2: No, Zack Snyder has a heart. And he goes like,
- 30:39Speaker 2: I can't disappoint little Tommy. Who am I doing this for? Myself?
- 30:45Speaker 2: Or am I doing it for the little Tommies out there?
- 30:48Speaker 5: But there's, again, it's not like I am above a
- 30:51Speaker 5: good action scene. I think my issue with it is
- 30:54Speaker 5: with your slow-mo firing of guns. And, like, we've seen that.
- 30:58Speaker 5: But we've also seen it done with other movies that, like,
- 31:02Speaker 5: if I'm going to watch a John Wick movie, like,
- 31:04Speaker 5: I know that that's all fake to some extent. Like,
- 31:08Speaker 5: Keanu's not going to get killed in the process. There's
- 31:10Speaker 5: some wire work. There's some green screen. There's some CGI
- 31:13Speaker 5: in the play. But there's also some really well-trained action
- 31:17Speaker 5: guys that are there choreographing it and actually flipping around
- 31:21Speaker 5: and knocking guns out of each other's hands. And I
- 31:23Speaker 5: feel like there's some real visceral stuff going on there.
- 31:27Speaker 5: Whereas these, I feel like I'm playing a computer game.
- 31:30Speaker 5: And that was a well-choreographed scene in my computer game.
- 31:33Speaker 5: But I don't feel a real-world connection to what's going
- 31:36Speaker 5: on on the screen with these.
- 31:38Speaker 2: Yes, I get you.
- 31:40Speaker 5: Yeah, I feel like it's just a difference.
- 31:42Speaker 2: I get you. That was my primary problem with the
- 31:48Speaker 2: new Indiana Jones movie was that there were scenes where
- 31:52Speaker 2: I was like, you know, this is a really amazing
- 31:58Speaker 2: storyboard for when they actually go and make this movie.
- 32:02Speaker 5: But the answer to that one is, this poor guy's
- 32:06Speaker 5: in his 80s, for God's sakes. He doesn't want to
- 32:09Speaker 5: do all this. But we're going to do it anyway,
- 32:13Speaker 5: because cash in a paycheck.
- 32:15Speaker 2: Right, right, right. We've got to find something to justify it.
- 32:19Speaker 2: Keep this money train going. We got to justify our jobs.
- 32:24Speaker 2: And nobody cares about movies anymore. So we've got to
- 32:27Speaker 2: do anything. We'll bring back John Woo out of retirement.
- 32:30Speaker 2: We'll get Harrison Ford out of retirement. We got to
- 32:33Speaker 2: get those asses in seats.
- 32:35Speaker 5: Nobody gets to retire.
- 32:37Speaker 2: Does anybody got any ideas on how to save movies?
- 32:42Speaker 2: All right. So Harrison Ford, come back. We have not
- 32:46Speaker 2: sold a ticket. in two years so please um.
- 32:54Speaker 5: All right fine if i have to right right can
- 32:56Speaker 5: i do a scene without my shirt on because pretty
- 33:00Speaker 5: ripped old dude i want to check out my chest
- 33:04Speaker 5: that was the most disturbing part at the front of
- 33:06Speaker 5: that movie when i'm like oh god oh god put
- 33:09Speaker 5: a shirt on please jesus dude yeah like there's a
- 33:11Speaker 5: reason i don't go out without my shirt on i
- 33:14Speaker 5: expect the.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Same from you harrison harrison let's know yourself know yourself
- 33:18Speaker 2: I liked it because it goes like, look, he's old.
- 33:21Speaker 3: He's old.
- 33:22Speaker 2: I mean, it.
- 33:23Speaker 5: Leans into that. That is one of the things I
- 33:25Speaker 5: liked about it. It's not like they're pretending like he's
- 33:27Speaker 5: still a young man. Every step of the way.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Part four kind of was. I felt like part four,
- 33:32Speaker 2: it was kind of side step.
- 33:35Speaker 5: Well, that was the thing because it had been so long.
- 33:37Speaker 5: They came back with four and he's like, look, I'm
- 33:39Speaker 5: still here.
- 33:40Speaker 2: I still got it.
- 33:42Speaker 5: Five is a different story. Five is like, oh, fuck,
- 33:44Speaker 5: I hurt. Everything hurts. As he's walking around with her
- 33:50Speaker 5: by the end there, he's like, Jesus, I don't need
- 33:52Speaker 5: to be doing this anymore.
- 33:54Speaker 2: He's basically saying, I just would like to die now, please.
- 33:57Speaker 5: I just want to go sit in an easy chair
- 33:59Speaker 5: and not look for fucking treasures. And I just go relax.
- 34:05Speaker 5: I kind of appreciated that aspect. Absolutely. Dude seems like
- 34:09Speaker 5: he's in pain the whole movie and that's how it
- 34:11Speaker 5: should be because.
- 34:12Speaker 2: He's an old man.
- 34:14Speaker 5: People were lucky to walk upstairs at his age, for
- 34:18Speaker 5: God's sake.
- 34:19Speaker 2: For God's sake. Those moments when they leaned into that,
- 34:24Speaker 2: that for me made that movie worth it.
- 34:26Speaker 5: I think that's a nice grounding sort of a thing
- 34:30Speaker 5: for this crazy old character that's been through a lot
- 34:32Speaker 5: of adventures.
- 34:33Speaker 2: Because the problem with Indiana Jones' problem is that it's
- 34:40Speaker 2: so concerned about driving tanks off buildings that You never
- 34:45Speaker 2: really get to know Indiana Jones as a person with
- 34:50Speaker 2: any depth. All right. And that may be blasphemy, too.
- 34:55Speaker 5: But. That's only blasphemy because we're in the middle of
- 34:59Speaker 5: this movie.
- 35:00Speaker 3: Right.
- 35:01Speaker 5: Which is my main problem with this movie. Because I
- 35:05Speaker 5: feel like I have moved in and lived with Indiana
- 35:08Speaker 5: Jones compared to our characters in Rebel Moon.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Okay, okay, okay, okay.
- 35:14Speaker 5: If we're switching gears back to Rebel Moon, that's one
- 35:16Speaker 5: of my main issues.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Okay, all right. Yes, do you... Well, because there are such...
- 35:22Speaker 2: I would argue that these are archetypes And it relies
- 35:26Speaker 2: on archetypes.
- 35:27Speaker 5: They're caricatures. They are like big, fully drawn caricatures because
- 35:34Speaker 5: they're so leaning into the like specifics of like, look
- 35:39Speaker 5: at Turok, the dinosaur hunter. Isn't he cool? Isn't it
- 35:42Speaker 5: cool when he rides that Griffin? That's not at all
- 35:45Speaker 5: like that scene in class of the Titans. And he
- 35:49Speaker 5: jumps on Pegasus and they, no, it's not at all
- 35:51Speaker 5: like that.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Listen, listen, Listen, that scene kicked ass.
- 35:56Speaker 5: All right. And so when our anime chick shows up
- 36:01Speaker 5: and she's got lightning swords and they're on fire and
- 36:04Speaker 5: she fights a giant spider. Which again, like in concept,
- 36:09Speaker 5: all of these things, I'm like, yes, on paper, this
- 36:12Speaker 5: should be my favorite thing. And that part is badass.
- 36:16Speaker 5: It's a cool scene. But again, like all I know
- 36:19Speaker 5: about her is she looks like a chick from anime
- 36:21Speaker 5: and Even with the hat, the hat is totally anime.
- 36:25Speaker 5: And I'm like, she's super cool visually. Look at her.
- 36:28Speaker 5: Now what's going on behind those eyes?
- 36:29Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 36:31Speaker 5: I don't know. That's not, we barely know her damn name.
- 36:35Speaker 2: This is not that movie.
- 36:36Speaker 9: All right.
- 36:36Speaker 2: So the, the, the movie is a chicken pot pie.
- 36:42Speaker 2: It's a chicken pot pie of cultural references. Okay. So
- 36:53Speaker 2: you've got to have the expanded universe of Rebel Moon
- 36:58Speaker 2: in your head when you go into Rebel Moon. And
- 37:01Speaker 2: it's not like licensed expanded universe material. It is every
- 37:06Speaker 2: science fiction movie and anime and Luke Basin film that
- 37:10Speaker 2: you've seen over the last 30, 40 years. That is
- 37:14Speaker 2: your backstory to this movie, okay?
- 37:17Speaker 5: I don't disagree with what you're presenting as this movie,
- 37:22Speaker 5: but I kind of disagree that I don't think you
- 37:26Speaker 5: should have to do homework before a film for it
- 37:29Speaker 5: to play in front of you.
- 37:31Speaker 2: Sure.
- 37:31Speaker 5: Which, truthfully, they are coming up with a prequel comic
- 37:34Speaker 5: book to tell you some of the backstory of characters
- 37:37Speaker 5: that is not at all presented.
- 37:39Speaker 2: On the screen. I do not need to know their backstory.
- 37:42Speaker 2: I have seen their backstory in the 20 other movies
- 37:45Speaker 2: that have already done that story, all right? Oh, God.
- 37:49Speaker 2: So I'm fine with... anime girl you find out like
- 37:52Speaker 2: yeah she lost her kids I know I get it
- 37:54Speaker 2: it's the morning mother alright let's.
- 37:56Speaker 5: Go next the best shortcut ever when we go to
- 37:59Speaker 5: gladiator planet Yeah. You know, and we'll get, like, one
- 38:02Speaker 5: of those guys from Gladiator. No, they really got the
- 38:05Speaker 5: guy from Gladiator. Absolutely. And they're like, we don't even
- 38:09Speaker 5: have to fill you in on his backstory. It's in
- 38:11Speaker 5: that other movie. Just go watch Gladiator. You are convincing me.
- 38:16Speaker 5: And now he's broken down and dirty. That's right. And
- 38:18Speaker 5: we're going to bring him back to his full Gladiator
- 38:21Speaker 5: glory when he gets some dirt washed off of him.
- 38:24Speaker 2: You've seen his backstory. You know his backstory because you
- 38:27Speaker 2: saw Gladiator. And you know the Han Solo guy. You
- 38:36Speaker 2: know what they're doing here because you've seen Star Wars.
- 38:40Speaker 2: So that's like their version of the Han Solo scoundrel character.
- 38:43Speaker 5: But they rolled him up with Lando. He's Han Solo,
- 38:46Speaker 5: but what if he did betray them?
- 38:49Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. It was like, I'm Zack Snyder
- 38:54Speaker 2: and I'm going to write what Han Solo would have
- 38:56Speaker 2: really done.
- 38:57Speaker 5: Han shot first. He shot our friends in the back.
- 39:03Speaker 2: It's like, yeah, yeah, absolutely. Shot his friends in the back.
- 39:08Speaker 2: Well said, Brian. So, yeah, yeah. So it's like, it's
- 39:13Speaker 2: kind of, so in that way, it's like fan fiction.
- 39:16Speaker 2: You know, uh, you know, it's like, you know, yeah,
- 39:18Speaker 2: you know, Han Solo, he would have like gone and
- 39:21Speaker 2: blown up a Death Star. He would have turned them in.
- 39:24Speaker 5: Because he could have gotten money and all he cares
- 39:27Speaker 5: about is money.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Yeah, because that's the Han Solo, the real story, not
- 39:31Speaker 2: this Hollywood bullshit version of Han Solo. So, you know, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:38Speaker 2: So there's that. So you know that guy's story. You've seen,
- 39:42Speaker 2: you know, uh you know luke basin movies before so
- 39:46Speaker 2: you know you you realize like these these girls are
- 39:48Speaker 2: you know killing machines you know and um uh so
- 39:53Speaker 2: you know you so you're coming into that you know
- 39:55Speaker 2: it's based kind of on the uh telling a star
- 39:58Speaker 2: wars story you know there's going to be these things
- 40:00Speaker 2: so it's just all this stuff is it's kind of
- 40:03Speaker 2: assumes kind of like a tarantino movie i'm not saying
- 40:06Speaker 2: it's doing it as consciously skillfully all right all right
- 40:12Speaker 2: all right sure sure i did.
- 40:14Speaker 5: See if we're working in the other end of the
- 40:16Speaker 5: uh we've done our heroes caricatureness sure i did see
- 40:20Speaker 5: this i won't take credit for it i saw it
- 40:22Speaker 5: online somebody said for those of you who thought the
- 40:26Speaker 5: nazi symbolism in star wars was a little subtle for
- 40:29Speaker 5: you they're just nazis they're just space nazis And like
- 40:35Speaker 5: so much so, they don't even give him a space uniform.
- 40:38Speaker 5: It's just a good old fashioned Nazi uniform. I was like, wow,
- 40:44Speaker 5: he really didn't stray very far, did he? It's just
- 40:46Speaker 5: the old uniform and he knocked a swastika off and
- 40:50Speaker 5: put some other insignia on there and he's good to go.
- 40:54Speaker 2: That's the Zack Snyder I know and love. Everything underlined,
- 40:59Speaker 2: everything highlighted, everything all caps.
- 41:02Speaker 5: That is a very easy go-to, much like Back to
- 41:06Speaker 5: Indiana Jones. Who's the ultimate bad guy? Who do you
- 41:09Speaker 5: want to see get punched in the face in every movie? Nazis! So, like,
- 41:14Speaker 5: screw that guy. Throw him off there. Kill him. He's
- 41:17Speaker 5: a space Nazi, and I hate him. Like, it is
- 41:20Speaker 5: an easy go-to, I'll give you.
- 41:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, sure, sure. Well, I mean, we can't
- 41:25Speaker 2: pick on Rebel Moon for going too fascist and showing
- 41:28Speaker 2: the bad guys. I mean, I mean.
- 41:31Speaker 5: That's the only performance I'm on board with. So that, yeah,
- 41:34Speaker 5: I'm not going to take any points off for that villain,
- 41:36Speaker 5: because that's my one... That's the one performance I think
- 41:39Speaker 5: that works. Like, he is chewing the scenery, but he is, like,
- 41:42Speaker 5: full-on villain mode, and he's knocking it out of the
- 41:45Speaker 5: park on that front. So it's like... That guy does
- 41:48Speaker 5: not phone it in. Like, no, he's the one character.
- 41:51Speaker 5: I'm like, yeah, I get it. I don't need it.
- 41:53Speaker 5: I get it. I don't need a backstory on this guy.
- 41:56Speaker 5: He's evil. I buy it. So I'm okay with it.
- 41:59Speaker 5: It's the rest of them. It's like, it's our, our
- 42:01Speaker 5: hero that we spend two hours and 15 minutes with.
- 42:04Speaker 5: And I'm like, So what's her deal again? I'm like, dude,
- 42:09Speaker 5: and we get tons of backstory. We get flashbacks and
- 42:11Speaker 5: I'm still like, so wait, who is she? Why do
- 42:15Speaker 5: I care about her again? Like, I don't understand how
- 42:18Speaker 5: you can have as much time spent with her and
- 42:21Speaker 5: flashbacks of backstory and all this other stuff pieced together.
- 42:24Speaker 5: And then I get to the movie and I'm like, yeah,
- 42:26Speaker 5: why do I still not care about this girl? Like
- 42:28Speaker 5: I should, she's a bad-ass fighter. I like when she
- 42:31Speaker 5: kicks people's ass, but I'm like, I'm not invested in
- 42:34Speaker 5: her in any other way.
- 42:36Speaker 2: Oh, dude, I cared, man. I cared. I cared. I
- 42:39Speaker 2: wanted her to get revenge on her evil father and
- 42:41Speaker 2: bring down the, the, the nation. And I was like,
- 42:45Speaker 2: I was like, I'm on your side. You, you, uh,
- 42:49Speaker 2: you were, you know, you saw your parents slaughtered, you know,
- 42:52Speaker 2: you were thrown into this like military Academy turned into a,
- 42:57Speaker 2: killing machine. You got some messed up issues and some
- 43:01Speaker 2: trauma you're dealing with. And then you finally found a
- 43:05Speaker 2: place where you belonged finally. And you fit in. And
- 43:09Speaker 2: you were finally knowing peace for a half a second.
- 43:12Speaker 2: And it all got taken from you. And now you're like...
- 43:14Speaker 2: And then you were tortured and beaten and shown what
- 43:17Speaker 2: an evil regime you were working for. And now you
- 43:21Speaker 2: just want some... Let's just hide from it. Let's just...
- 43:25Speaker 2: peace and quiet and everything like that, but they just
- 43:27Speaker 2: won't let you have anything. You know, you finally get
- 43:30Speaker 2: a scrap and now the machine is going to take
- 43:33Speaker 2: it from you. And so, you know, the robots come
- 43:36Speaker 2: or the bad guys come and she's just going like,
- 43:39Speaker 2: I got nowhere else to run. I'm in a back
- 43:42Speaker 2: end corner. You didn't get all that?
- 43:47Speaker 5: Once again, on paper, I like all of that. In
- 43:51Speaker 5: that movie, I'm just sitting there like, so... She's our
- 43:55Speaker 5: lead again, right? I'm like, we've spent two hours and
- 43:58Speaker 5: 15 minutes with her. I guess, I guess she's our lead.
- 44:02Speaker 5: I don't know. Cause I've seen that girl and other
- 44:04Speaker 5: stuff and like, she's good and other stuff, but like
- 44:07Speaker 5: there's some disconnect with this movie. And that's why I'm like,
- 44:10Speaker 5: is it the weird shooting style? I don't know. Because
- 44:13Speaker 5: I feel like there's a disconnect between her and the
- 44:15Speaker 5: audience and her and the rest of the characters. And
- 44:18Speaker 5: I'm like, I've, I've seen you in other stuff. You're,
- 44:20Speaker 5: you're good. Like I'm totally in as like a character on,
- 44:24Speaker 5: even like minimal screen time in like Atomic Blonde. I
- 44:27Speaker 5: went back and went, oh yeah, she's in that. She's
- 44:29Speaker 5: not in it for long, but you really feel for her.
- 44:32Speaker 5: And like, I don't, in the minute she's on screen
- 44:35Speaker 5: in that, I feel for her so much more than
- 44:38Speaker 5: two hours and 15 minutes in this movie. So again,
- 44:42Speaker 5: I don't blame the actress. I don't, I'm trying to
- 44:44Speaker 5: figure out why it's so disconnecting for me.
- 44:47Speaker 2: I mean, it could be, I mean, you may be
- 44:49Speaker 2: picking up, you know, their, The fact that these things
- 44:52Speaker 2: are all shot on green screen. But I mean, also,
- 44:54Speaker 2: I mean, I didn't catch that, you know, look.
- 44:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 44:58Speaker 2: In honesty, I had to sit. I just took two attempts,
- 45:01Speaker 2: you know, and everything. I had to cut it in half,
- 45:03Speaker 2: take a nap, you know, come back to it later,
- 45:06Speaker 2: you know, and everything. So it wasn't like all sitting
- 45:09Speaker 2: in one moment, you know, because I can see like
- 45:12Speaker 2: if you have no connection to the characters, how this
- 45:14Speaker 2: would be a slog. To get through because it is
- 45:17Speaker 2: so long.
- 45:18Speaker 5: And think we're only halfway into the nonsense story.
- 45:22Speaker 2: Yeah. Really?
- 45:22Speaker 5: We don't even get started on the movie. Right. This
- 45:26Speaker 5: is the putting the band together part.
- 45:27Speaker 2: That's right. And it's two hours and 15 minutes.
- 45:29Speaker 3: Right.
- 45:30Speaker 5: So we really haven't even started the adventure yet. We're
- 45:32Speaker 5: just getting the band together so we can have the adventure.
- 45:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:36Speaker 5: He read it out so much that like, it took
- 45:38Speaker 5: this long just to get like, this is the end
- 45:40Speaker 5: of the first act. We're two hours and 15 minutes. Okay.
- 45:44Speaker 2: And so, and so that's also either that's you. I
- 45:49Speaker 2: like the plot device of the seven samurai.
- 45:53Speaker 9: All right.
- 45:53Speaker 2: Where you go to those different places. All right. And
- 45:55Speaker 2: you see kooky, you know, very defined, you know, team members,
- 46:02Speaker 2: you know? And so, I didn't mind that they stretched
- 46:06Speaker 2: that out because I like that plot. You know, it's
- 46:08Speaker 2: kind of like the most dangerous game that we were
- 46:09Speaker 2: talking about. You know, it's just like you like that
- 46:13Speaker 2: story or you don't like that story. But if you
- 46:15Speaker 2: like that story, hey, you'll see it, you know, dressed
- 46:18Speaker 2: up in different ways, you know. And I didn't mind
- 46:21Speaker 2: that it took all day and all night to get to,
- 46:26Speaker 2: you know, the confrontation because I just kind of like
- 46:29Speaker 2: how that. those, those things flow, you know, building the team.
- 46:33Speaker 5: I like the idea of that. Here's the thing. And
- 46:35Speaker 5: this is when I ask on a regular basis on
- 46:37Speaker 5: this show now, because we have all these new formats
- 46:40Speaker 5: and mediums. So if that's the case, wouldn't this have
- 46:44Speaker 5: worked better as a series? Like what if we devoted
- 46:47Speaker 5: each episode to picking up one of these cast members
- 46:50Speaker 5: and And then we could spend like 60 minutes or more,
- 46:52Speaker 5: like getting into their backstory, getting attached to these characters.
- 46:56Speaker 5: So that then when we get to the end of
- 46:58Speaker 5: season one and teams together, you're like, man, this was
- 47:01Speaker 5: an Epic journey. And like, I'm so glad all these, like,
- 47:03Speaker 5: then it sort of changes the pace so that you
- 47:06Speaker 5: can really kind of not only have a good arc
- 47:09Speaker 5: of these characters, but like spend a little time with each.
- 47:12Speaker 5: Cause that's the thing. I feel like it's cool that
- 47:14Speaker 5: we're doing the stops and picking up characters. I do
- 47:16Speaker 5: like that as a gimmick. I've seen that in plenty
- 47:18Speaker 5: of other movies where, And I think it's fun. I
- 47:20Speaker 5: like it more than most people, but I feel like
- 47:22Speaker 5: we don't know anything about any of these people. So
- 47:25Speaker 5: like we spend a lot of time, we're like spinning
- 47:27Speaker 5: our wheels, like got to go here, got to go here.
- 47:29Speaker 5: We're fetch questing these new people, but then like, we
- 47:32Speaker 5: don't devote any time to them. So it's like by
- 47:35Speaker 5: the time we get to the end, we're like, Hey,
- 47:36Speaker 5: there's some strangers riding up on horses at the end.
- 47:40Speaker 5: Good for us. We, Got to the next level on
- 47:43Speaker 5: this video game. Oh, no.
- 47:46Speaker 2: I never felt like I was watching a video game. Now,
- 47:48Speaker 2: some of these criticisms and I have felt like I've
- 47:52Speaker 2: been watching video games, watching these types of movies. They
- 47:56Speaker 2: do feel like the concept art got some animation behind it. And,
- 48:00Speaker 2: you know, we're basically watching. We're watching the concept art
- 48:04Speaker 2: for when they actually make this movie, you know, and
- 48:08Speaker 2: and so that's cool. I mean, sometimes that bothers me
- 48:11Speaker 2: with some of the scenes in Indiana Jones. But for
- 48:14Speaker 2: this one, it didn't. And maybe just my expectations are
- 48:22Speaker 2: set at Zack Snyder levels. That's very low for me.
- 48:27Speaker 2: But it's higher for me. I go like, I want
- 48:30Speaker 2: to see some cool stuff. And it's not going to be.
- 48:34Speaker 2: It's not going to be cynical. For me, it doesn't
- 48:38Speaker 2: feel cynical like a Michael Bay movie. It feels more
- 48:42Speaker 2: like really coming from a love of the genre conventions
- 48:48Speaker 2: for Zack Snyder.
- 48:50Speaker 5: I do always kind of put him in that same
- 48:52Speaker 5: camp as Michael Bay, which I have a lot of
- 48:55Speaker 5: bad things to say about him. Probably more so with
- 48:57Speaker 5: Michael Bay.
- 48:58Speaker 2: Definitely.
- 48:58Speaker 5: It's weird that he's had this weird resurgence and people
- 49:02Speaker 5: totally defend him now as a filmmaker once he got
- 49:05Speaker 5: away from Transformers. I've heard Ambulance is really good. I
- 49:08Speaker 5: just haven't gotten to it. So I'm like, I will
- 49:11Speaker 5: still try to go down that road with him, but
- 49:13Speaker 5: I still feel like he's another one of those that's
- 49:16Speaker 5: like so much flash on the screen and not really
- 49:19Speaker 5: worried about substance.
- 49:20Speaker 3: Right.
- 49:21Speaker 5: But then even if we're just like as a filmmaker,
- 49:23Speaker 5: like the what was the Army of the Dead? Did
- 49:26Speaker 5: you watch that one?
- 49:27Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, yeah. I mean, yes. It's not good.
- 49:31Speaker 5: OK, I said that's what I was going to say.
- 49:33Speaker 5: Here's the damning version for me. I kind of liked it.
- 49:36Speaker 2: Oh, did you? I think it.
- 49:38Speaker 5: Was really dumb.
- 49:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:40Speaker 5: But I was like it to me. That one worked
- 49:42Speaker 5: as like a very cheesy zombie movie that like. again,
- 49:46Speaker 5: it's very goal oriented. We got to get here. We
- 49:48Speaker 5: got to get this thing. So like a lot of
- 49:50Speaker 5: it is just running and trying to get to the
- 49:52Speaker 5: thing and having a bunch of zombies chasing you. It
- 49:55Speaker 5: makes absolutely no sense within the like zombie mythology of like,
- 50:00Speaker 5: why do they have a King? And like, why do they,
- 50:03Speaker 5: some of them are super developed and some of them
- 50:05Speaker 5: are just mindless drones. Like why? Like, I'm fine with that.
- 50:08Speaker 5: If you explain how it got like that.
- 50:09Speaker 2: But like, we don't like, right.
- 50:11Speaker 3: Right.
- 50:13Speaker 5: It sure does look cool. I was at least entertained
- 50:16Speaker 5: by the dumb story arc that was got to get there,
- 50:18Speaker 5: got to fight through zombies, blah, blah, whatever. Yeah. And again,
- 50:21Speaker 5: I don't feel like we spent a lot of time
- 50:24Speaker 5: on other bullshit. It was just like, here's our thing
- 50:26Speaker 5: and we're running and gunning the whole movie and we
- 50:28Speaker 5: get to the end and that's it.
- 50:30Speaker 2: That's right.
- 50:30Speaker 5: So like, I don't like, again, as a filmmaker, like
- 50:33Speaker 5: there's times when I can get on board with his, like, again,
- 50:36Speaker 5: no offense, but I felt like that movie was dumb.
- 50:38Speaker 5: And I was like, I can have dumb fun with him.
- 50:41Speaker 2: Sure. Let's do this.
- 50:42Speaker 5: So I feel like it was that it's maybe kind
- 50:45Speaker 5: of what makes me like sucker punch too. It's like,
- 50:47Speaker 5: it's kind of dumb fun. It looks really pretty, but
- 50:50Speaker 5: you know, doesn't necessarily make sense if you think about
- 50:53Speaker 5: it too much. So I'm okay with those, but it's
- 50:56Speaker 5: something about this one because it's trying to like, make
- 50:59Speaker 5: a bigger comment, you know? It's like, it's trying to,
- 51:02Speaker 5: she's the hero and these people are, have morals and like,
- 51:06Speaker 5: they're going against these bad space Nazis. And maybe it's
- 51:08Speaker 5: because it's taking itself so seriously that I also want
- 51:12Speaker 5: it to take the character development seriously and the story
- 51:15Speaker 5: arc seriously. And then it just kind of phones it
- 51:17Speaker 5: in on those.
- 51:19Speaker 2: Right. Right.
- 51:20Speaker 5: Sure.
- 51:21Speaker 2: No, that is not, it does not seem to be
- 51:23Speaker 2: as concerned, but yeah, But I mean, you're right. I mean,
- 51:28Speaker 2: a series version. And I'm sure there's going to be
- 51:31Speaker 2: probably like a five hour Zack Snyder cut, you know,
- 51:35Speaker 2: which probably will have some of that stuff.
- 51:37Speaker 3: No, it. Yeah.
- 51:38Speaker 5: That's what I'm saying. We already know that's coming. Oh, OK.
- 51:41Speaker 5: Kind of rubs me the wrong way, too. Oh, well,
- 51:44Speaker 5: because like they're now they're manufacturing the thing that we
- 51:48Speaker 5: got from Justice League. Like we built up this whole audience. Oh,
- 51:52Speaker 5: my gosh. We have to have the Snyder cut. So
- 51:55Speaker 5: now it's like they're planning that. It's like Netflix got
- 51:57Speaker 5: together and had a meeting of like, well, how can
- 51:59Speaker 5: we do that again? Like, how can we actively set
- 52:05Speaker 5: that up? You know, that had to be a thought
- 52:08Speaker 5: in their process because it's just money. It's just like, well,
- 52:11Speaker 5: if we deliver them the Zack Snyder cut that they want,
- 52:14Speaker 5: every one of those people out there clamoring on the
- 52:17Speaker 5: internet for it last time is going to come back
- 52:19Speaker 5: and sign up for Netflix. And then they're also spacing
- 52:22Speaker 5: them way out over this next year so that you're
- 52:25Speaker 5: going to have to keep on with Netflix or re-sign
- 52:29Speaker 5: up again in a couple months.
- 52:31Speaker 2: Ah, you're cynical.
- 52:32Speaker 10: I mean, it is a cynical take, but the business
- 52:37Speaker 10: people that Netflix are, this is definitely a calculated move
- 52:44Speaker 10: because they're staggering them out.
- 52:45Speaker 5: They're doing this one as the PG-13 cut. He's going
- 52:49Speaker 5: to release an R-rated... four hour, however long cut. That's
- 52:53Speaker 5: the Zack Snyder director cut.
- 52:55Speaker 4: Right.
- 52:56Speaker 5: After part two comes out. So you're going to have
- 52:58Speaker 5: to watch part one, PG 13, watch part two, PG 13,
- 53:02Speaker 5: the beginning of next year. Then he's going to drop
- 53:06Speaker 5: the super cut of the first one. And then after that,
- 53:09Speaker 5: the super long cut of the second, I'm like, this
- 53:12Speaker 5: is now instead of just signing up to watch one,
- 53:15Speaker 5: two hour movie. Now you've signed on to Netflix till the,
- 53:19Speaker 5: towards the end of next year. no that is a
- 53:22Speaker 5: huge business plan for them like we can't pretend like
- 53:27Speaker 5: that's not part of their mo whether or not zach
- 53:30Speaker 5: is guilty of it or not i don't know but
- 53:33Speaker 5: i still find it like again very presumptuous much like
- 53:36Speaker 5: the part one that like oh you're gonna come back
- 53:39Speaker 5: for my director's cut and i know you are because
- 53:42Speaker 5: I'm Zack Snyder. And I'm like, that just seems like
- 53:44Speaker 5: a dick move.
- 53:46Speaker 2: I don't think, I disagree. I think they know they're
- 53:49Speaker 2: making a big story. And I think there's going to
- 53:51Speaker 2: be people who want to, you know, the long, you know, the, the,
- 53:55Speaker 2: the boring, the boring, uh, cut, you know, with like,
- 53:59Speaker 2: you know, uh, them talking about their childhoods and stuff
- 54:02Speaker 2: like that.
- 54:02Speaker 5: They don't talk about their childhoods. Certainly not in this cut,
- 54:05Speaker 5: they don't. No characters talk to each other.
- 54:08Speaker 2: So they're going to be, they're going to have the
- 54:10Speaker 2: longer version where they actually have dialogue.
- 54:14Speaker 5: Dialogue.
- 54:16Speaker 2: Dialogue version.
- 54:17Speaker 5: What a novel concept.
- 54:18Speaker 2: Yeah, right, right, right. Exactly. Exactly. The first cut, that
- 54:23Speaker 2: was just the stuff Zack Snyder made the movie.
- 54:25Speaker 5: That was the work print. I mean, we're just figuring
- 54:27Speaker 5: this out. We'll get back to you later with the
- 54:29Speaker 5: real movie.
- 54:30Speaker 2: That's what it feels like. No, no, no. This is
- 54:32Speaker 2: like the writer's cut.
- 54:36Speaker 5: He didn't have writers. What are you talking about?
- 54:39Speaker 2: Yeah, well, so yeah. I mean, so yeah, it's a
- 54:42Speaker 2: big flush together of all those things. So yeah, I mean,
- 54:45Speaker 2: I didn't feel the.
- 54:48Speaker 2: I didn't feel the lack of backstory and character development
- 54:52Speaker 2: because I see this as, you know, accumulation of the genre.
- 54:58Speaker 3: All right.
- 54:59Speaker 2: So it's kind of like all that, those little microscopic
- 55:02Speaker 2: deatrice of, of ideas that go into making these movies.
- 55:08Speaker 2: And you just know the genre. So, you know who
- 55:10Speaker 2: these people are. And so I didn't feel like that movie,
- 55:15Speaker 2: this movie was like, lacking and do you want it
- 55:18Speaker 2: to tell an original story well that's that's your personal
- 55:24Speaker 2: that's really not what he does all right that's not
- 55:27Speaker 2: what he does okay that's not zack snyder takes uh
- 55:32Speaker 2: intellectual property yeah he usually takes other people's work right
- 55:36Speaker 2: And he puts it through his Snyder gun. Snyder machine.
- 55:40Speaker 2: His Zack gun. He Zackifies it.
- 55:44Speaker 5: He definitely Zackifies it.
- 55:46Speaker 2: He Zackifies it. He Zacks all over it.
- 55:49Speaker 5: Remember the oozing I said earlier? Right, right, right. That's it.
- 55:55Speaker 2: So, the thought of Zack Snyder taking something you love
- 56:01Speaker 2: and Zacking all over it. If that is abhorrent to you,
- 56:06Speaker 2: Rebel Moon may seem like a zero-sum bet game, all right?
- 56:13Speaker 2: But if Zack Snyder zacking all over your childhood sounds
- 56:20Speaker 2: like a nice way to spend an afternoon, maybe Rebel
- 56:28Speaker 2: Moon works just fine.
- 56:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 56:34Speaker 5: And again, we've addressed all these other characters that I'm
- 56:37Speaker 5: upset with because they don't have any character development. But
- 56:41Speaker 5: what's maybe the most annoying and I understand. Well, I
- 56:44Speaker 5: don't really fully understand. I'm guessing I know why. The
- 56:48Speaker 5: best thing about the movie character wise is Jimmy. Jimmy,
- 56:53Speaker 5: our robot. Yeah, that we meet at the beginning. And
- 56:56Speaker 5: those scenes are great. And like, I really feel like, OK,
- 56:59Speaker 5: we're on the. the, the precipice of this great thing
- 57:02Speaker 5: of like, okay, we're working in some, like some, some
- 57:05Speaker 5: robotic rules of like, what's he allowed to do? Does
- 57:08Speaker 5: he live by a code? Does he have, you know,
- 57:11Speaker 5: I'm going to fight for what's right. Is he more
- 57:14Speaker 5: concerned about humanity than himself or, you know, the, the
- 57:17Speaker 5: machine that's running him? Like there's all these questions that
- 57:20Speaker 5: are thrown out there. And then I'm like, we, I'm
- 57:22Speaker 5: really liking what they're doing with this, the characterization, the
- 57:25Speaker 5: voice work is obviously awesome. So it's like, we get
- 57:28Speaker 5: to him and, And then we leave. We ditch him
- 57:34Speaker 5: really early on. And we don't come back to the
- 57:36Speaker 5: last shot of the movie. And we're like, Oh, there's
- 57:38Speaker 5: that guy I liked. And he's not in this movie
- 57:41Speaker 5: at all.
- 57:42Speaker 2: Listen, man, I understand. They're telling a big story.
- 57:45Speaker 5: It's a big story.
- 57:47Speaker 2: It's a big story right now.
- 57:49Speaker 5: Cause he's the best part of the movie.
- 57:51Speaker 2: He's going to, he's, You're going to get more robot.
- 57:54Speaker 2: Anthony Hopkins robot, okay?
- 57:55Speaker 5: That's the annoying part. I'm going to say it's signed
- 57:58Speaker 5: on to Netflix so I can get my robot part
- 58:00Speaker 5: that I want.
- 58:01Speaker 3: I know.
- 58:02Speaker 5: It's all part of their scam. Come on.
- 58:07Speaker 2: Come on. You know when they're not doing that, you'd
- 58:09Speaker 2: keep it because you like the show Nailed It and
- 58:12Speaker 2: Cake Masters and all that stuff. You're going to keep
- 58:17Speaker 2: your Netflix, dude.
- 58:18Speaker 5: I'm waiting for Family Switch 2. Come on. When she
- 58:22Speaker 5: gets back from soccer camp and then the whole family
- 58:25Speaker 5: gets switched, but they reverse the genders this time.
- 58:28Speaker 2: Oh, my God. There we go.
- 58:29Speaker 5: Come on, McG. Get on it.
- 58:31Speaker 2: Come on. Or they got to switch families. There's got
- 58:35Speaker 2: to be a trading places kind of thing.
- 58:37Speaker 5: Yeah, you went to that version last time, so I
- 58:39Speaker 5: think you need to start working on that screenplay.
- 58:41Speaker 2: I think we do.
- 58:42Speaker 5: We'll get it to McG. We'll get this thing greenlit.
- 58:45Speaker 5: No problem.
- 58:46Speaker 2: And so what it is, it's the late 1960s. And
- 58:51Speaker 2: an average American family gets switched with a family in Cambodia.
- 59:02Speaker 5: Alright, you just lost your audience.
- 59:06Speaker 2: During the Pol Pot revolution.
- 59:08Speaker 5: You lost your audience.
- 59:10Speaker 2: Audience.
- 59:11Speaker 5: This was way better when it was just a modern
- 59:13Speaker 5: day American family. So then we can have the old
- 59:16Speaker 5: timey family being like, what's this cell phone? I don't understand.
- 59:20Speaker 5: I'm a fish out of water.
- 59:21Speaker 2: No, it's a rich, rich 19, early 70s family. Kind
- 59:29Speaker 2: of like the Jeffersons or something like that. They live
- 59:34Speaker 2: on the top floor of a penthouse and they're really schmoozy.
- 59:37Speaker 5: Deluxe apartment.
- 59:38Speaker 2: Deluxe apartment in the sky. And then they wake up
- 59:42Speaker 2: and they're in a rice field and they're being made
- 59:45Speaker 2: to work under some glorified utopian society under Pol Pot.
- 59:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:55Speaker 2: They have no idea how to plow. They have no
- 59:57Speaker 2: idea how to, you know, survive in such a harsh
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: environment under a fascist regime.
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: I think yours has just become a much deeper art
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: film that I don't think McG is qualified to direct.
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: That is the best movie though. That is the best movie.
- 1:00:21Speaker 5: Start writing this. We're going to start. Start pitching it.
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: We gotta find the right studio to back this. I
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: don't think Netflix is the place to take it.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: And we'll get Oliver Stone to direct it. It's an
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: Oliver Stone critique of American foreign policy mixed with a
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: zany Disney brain switch movie.
- 1:00:49Speaker 5: Oh, Lord. I mean... I've seen equally as ridiculous things
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: that got made. So if you can put this on paper,
- 1:00:58Speaker 5: we can start running it around to some studios.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: So good. It would be so good. What were we
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: talking about? Rebel moon?
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: I think it was rebel moon, but of all our tangents,
- 1:01:09Speaker 5: I don't know. That was a good Avenue. I like it.
- 1:01:12Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: I like going, but that's appropriate of rebel moon, which
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: is basically a hodgepodge, uh, uh, uh, call back to, uh,
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: you know, an entire.
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: Every sci-fi thing you've ever seen, ever.
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: Seen, ever seen all kind of like boiled down into
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: like this head cheese of, uh, of movie. It's like
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: the head cheese movie. And, um, they don't, they don't
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: cut out the, the, the prequels or the sequels or nothing.
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: They boil it out down.
- 1:01:44Speaker 5: To this jelly. Why is it not? rebel moon colon
- 1:01:50Speaker 5: head cheese cause it really needs to be forget this
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: child of the sun or kid of the rebellion or
- 1:02:01Speaker 5: whatever screw all those other titles skip your scar giver
- 1:02:06Speaker 5: definitely go on with colon head cheese.
- 1:02:14Speaker 11: Oh my god that's awesome Um, so yeah, yeah, they, uh,
- 1:02:21Speaker 11: I think that's, that's, that's a necessity to enjoy that movie.
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: Um, but, but so, so that's, that's where you fall.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: I mean, either that necessity is a strength that you
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: feel Zack Snyder has or a weakness. And, you know,
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: people can complain about Tarantino being the same thing. You know,
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: you kind of have to know those movies to get
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: what he's trying to say here.
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: I don't think you have to know him though. I
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: think he's so good at it that he, if you'd
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: never seen a movie before, you'd think he came up
- 1:02:58Speaker 5: with all this on his own and it feels fleshed
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: out enough that you follow the story. No problem here.
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: I think it's not like that. If you just went
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: in cold, never seen a sci-fi thing in your life,
- 1:03:08Speaker 5: you'd be me going, but why, who's that?
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: Why are they doing this? So what's their motivation? Where
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: are we going? Who are you fighting? None of that
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: is really spelled out. So it's like you almost that's
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: your crutch is like you have to have done your
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: homework for the entirety of your life on every sci
- 1:03:24Speaker 5: fi thing ever. And then fill in the blanks yourself.
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: I don't think again, as weird as Tarantino is, I
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: don't feel like he does that. I think he creates
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: a pretty well, especially as he's gone on, he's created
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: more and more of a lived in world in his life.
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: characters that like, I don't think you have to have that.
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: That's just sort of a bonus. Like if you're also
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: a seventies action dork, like he is like, you're like, Oh,
- 1:03:48Speaker 5: that's from that thing. And that's from that other thing.
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: And he stole that line from that thing. Like, it's
- 1:03:52Speaker 5: just like extra geek points if you know it. But
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: if you don't, I think the movie works fun on
- 1:03:56Speaker 5: its own just fine.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: So I, so I don't know. I don't know if
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: I would have enjoyed rebel moon as much as, Had
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: I not had.
- 1:04:08Speaker 5: If you came out of a vacuum.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: If I came out of a vacuum.
- 1:04:11Speaker 5: If you came through the space vagina from the beginning
- 1:04:13Speaker 5: of the movie. Is there any other way to describe
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: that visual at the beginning as they come through the...
- 1:04:20Speaker 5: I guess we're going to call it a wormhole, but
- 1:04:22Speaker 5: that's just a space vagina. I'm sorry. I don't know
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: any other way to put it.
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: Are you kidding? That is Zack Snyder 101. Think back
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: to Man of Steel when they put the... bad guys
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: into basically H.R. Giger dildos and they shoot them up
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: into a gapping orifice in the sky.
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: That's really what Zack Snyder's dream is. He just wants
- 1:04:50Speaker 5: to fly into a giant space vagina.
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: Alright, ramp. Speed ramp. Speed ramp.
- 1:04:58Speaker 5: I want to get there really fast too.
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: Bullets firing. And they go like, but Zack, Think about
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: little Timmy. And you're like, you're right. It's got a vagina.
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: Just make it space looking. It won't actually be a
- 1:05:12Speaker 5: physical vagina. It'll just kind of look like one. Once again,
- 1:05:16Speaker 5: this is the Tarantino thing. If you know what a
- 1:05:18Speaker 5: vagina looks like, you get a little bonus points.
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: Bonus points.
- 1:05:23Speaker 5: But if not, it's just a wormhole through space. It's fine.
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: For the six-year-olds, it's just a wormhole in space.
- 1:05:30Speaker 5: For the 30-year-olds, it's just a wormhole in space to
- 1:05:31Speaker 5: shove your big old ship through.
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: And they're going like, dang, I can't believe there's a
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: vagina in the sky. But yeah, so that's just classic
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: Zach doing his Zach thing, you know.
- 1:05:48Speaker 5: Zach and all of his space vaginas.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: I don't even know.
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: I don't either.
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: I don't even know. He definitely made, for me, the
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: movie exactly that I wished Zack Snyder made a Star
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: Wars movie. He made exactly that movie.
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: Maybe that's the problem. I don't think I ever had
- 1:06:11Speaker 5: that wish. So I think I'm okay. I mean, it
- 1:06:16Speaker 5: was pushing it with JJ, so.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06:19Speaker 5: Zacking all over it's a whole other problem.
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think that's exactly what I wanted,
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: you know? And, you know, for it to be standing
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: on its own as its own thing, you know, look, dude, it's...
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: It's probably going to... just go and go with the
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: comic books. And so, I mean, I don't know, maybe
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: it wouldn't, I don't know.
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: Five hour cuts. And then eventually it might all.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: Make sense, but all just sort of, you're going to
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: be like living in a world where rebel moon is
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: going to be shoved in your face for the next,
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: you know, 10 years.
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: Or the next 15 minutes until people forget about it.
- 1:06:57Speaker 5: Like everything else that's on Netflix. Cause that was my thing.
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: I was worried when you wanted to talk about this
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: because it was like last week when I watched it
- 1:07:06Speaker 5: and I'm like, shit, I don't think I remember. I've
- 1:07:09Speaker 5: already forgotten so much of it. I had to go
- 1:07:13Speaker 5: back and check. And I was like, wait, that, that, yeah,
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: I had to like go do research on it because
- 1:07:18Speaker 5: I'd forgotten everything in a week.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 1:07:21Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: So, so for me, this was like for all these
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: like Netflix blockbusters.
- 1:07:26Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: This was the first one I watched and I felt
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: like I was watching a movie and not a Netflix movie.
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: You know, this was the first one I was going like, Hey,
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: this doesn't look like a, you know, a TV movie
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: with a blockbuster budget. This actually looks like a movie
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: to me, you know? And I would say, and again,
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: We're just on different minds with this. I was going like,
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: I wish I saw this in a theater, is what
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: I said.
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: Which, again, it might at least visually deliver a little
- 1:08:01Speaker 5: better if you got to go sit in a theater. Right.
- 1:08:04Speaker 6: Story-wise, not so bad.
- 1:08:09Speaker 5: Listen, yeah. Well, then, even just the arc of it, though,
- 1:08:12Speaker 5: because then you're like, okay, this is part of a
- 1:08:14Speaker 5: bigger story, but shouldn't it deliver a better... Because that was, like, somebody, again,
- 1:08:20Speaker 5: compared it to, like, we just got the part two
- 1:08:23Speaker 5: in the Spider-Verse story.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:08:25Speaker 5: Which I watched that recently, and I'm like, that tells
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: a story.
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: And, like, that, we.
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: we spend so much time with those characters and like
- 1:08:33Speaker 5: they introduce a million extra characters, but our base, several characters,
- 1:08:37Speaker 5: like we spend a lot of time with.
- 1:08:39Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:08:39Speaker 5: And like, you really are like invested in their lives.
- 1:08:42Speaker 5: And this is a part two of an arc of three.
- 1:08:46Speaker 5: So this is really like way more. The first one
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: almost stands on its own. This is a empire Jedi story.
- 1:08:51Speaker 5: You know, it's like, it is full on leaves you
- 1:08:53Speaker 5: at a cliffhanger, but I feel like that middle part
- 1:08:56Speaker 5: works as its own movie. And I'm like this, didn't
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: really take from that. You know, it's like that. Yeah.
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I agree. I agree.
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: Of comparing it to like a recent movie, but you
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: could also do like the, the back to Tarantino. It's
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: like he had a four hour action movie in the studio.
- 1:09:15Speaker 5: I was like, no, cut that in half. But if
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: anything ever worked in separate movies, like that first one
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: is it's in tone, completely in tone. It's like he
- 1:09:24Speaker 5: almost shot them as different movies.
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: It's true.
- 1:09:26Speaker 5: And like, it's a totally different, thing than the second
- 1:09:30Speaker 5: half versus you know you don't you almost don't even
- 1:09:33Speaker 5: have to have the other half you can just be
- 1:09:35Speaker 5: like oh that was a weird way to end it
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: or that's a weird place that we came in on
- 1:09:39Speaker 5: on the second right but like it still stands on
- 1:09:42Speaker 5: its own as a movie more or less where this
- 1:09:44Speaker 5: i'm like maybe two will work better as a solo
- 1:09:47Speaker 5: movie because you're coming in and just kind of fill
- 1:09:50Speaker 5: in the backstory real quick and get on with the
- 1:09:52Speaker 5: rest of the story. But yeah, this one definitely like
- 1:09:55Speaker 5: doesn't really deliver as its own movie. It's just set
- 1:09:58Speaker 5: up for the next movie.
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: And so it's really weird that it, that doesn't bother
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: me on this because, because it does bother me on
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: other things. Like even like movies with like a lot,
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: Where the art direction and everything overpowers everything else. I
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: do get usually bored in movies. A lot of movies
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: nowadays where there's just so many characters and you don't
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: know why they matter or what their motivations are. That
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: irks me. Lack of characterization irks me. Or I can
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: appreciate a movie to a certain level, but I can't
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: really embrace it because... I was never emotionally invested. So,
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: you know, that, that I can, I like the, I
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: can enjoy like a scene taken out of context and
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: go like, that's a really well put together scene. But
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: as a, as a movie where you have to sit
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: there for 90 minutes to two hours, I need that
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: story thorough line and that empathetic thorough line for me
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: to bring me through these visuals. Cause otherwise it's just visuals.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: And I don't, I'm not there. So that is, I feel,
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: I'm hearing that that is your problem with Rebel Moon.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: And that is a problem that I've had with other movies.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: But I can't explain why it didn't bother me here.
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: Because I think I just like Zack Snyder's coloring book.
- 1:11:32Speaker 5: That is kind of what it is. We get to
- 1:11:35Speaker 5: see him play and he's got very specific colors in
- 1:11:39Speaker 5: his 64 pack. And like he comes to it and
- 1:11:42Speaker 5: delivers that look that you always get from most of
- 1:11:45Speaker 5: his movies.
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: I know.
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: I know.
- 1:11:48Speaker 5: As you were describing that, it does take me back
- 1:11:51Speaker 5: to like... the other comparison I would always go to
- 1:11:55Speaker 5: of a visual stylist with bad storytelling skills is your,
- 1:11:58Speaker 5: your Transformers movies. You know, it's like Michael Bay, like
- 1:12:02Speaker 5: had a very distinct visual style and he was all
- 1:12:05Speaker 5: in on making those. And then I got there and
- 1:12:07Speaker 5: I was like, I don't, I don't know who that is.
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: I'm lucky to pick out the dorky kid from the robots.
- 1:12:13Speaker 5: Cause none of the robots have any characterization. And it's like,
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: I don't even know what the plot is as we
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: go on. What are they trying to do? Like exactly.
- 1:12:23Speaker 5: So uninvested that I don't. And I've like half of
- 1:12:26Speaker 5: it's me not being invested, but also he's just not
- 1:12:29Speaker 5: explaining it right.
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:12:30Speaker 5: For you to be along for the ride. It's just like,
- 1:12:33Speaker 5: by the time you get there, you're like, Oh, that's
- 1:12:34Speaker 5: what they were doing. Okay. I'm like, you shouldn't be
- 1:12:37Speaker 5: like that with a movie. So, like, I feel like
- 1:12:39Speaker 5: that was a Michael Bay problem for years. Yes. Again,
- 1:12:42Speaker 5: I haven't seen stuff recently, but I know definitely those
- 1:12:45Speaker 5: first couple Transformers fall into that category.
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. So, Michael Bay, I don't like, all right?
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: And so, but Zack Snyder, I do like. They probably
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: both had the same problems with... Uh, but I always
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: know what's going on in a Zack Snyder movie.
- 1:13:04Speaker 5: I mean, yeah, I don't think he's on that.
- 1:13:06Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:13:08Speaker 5: And again, it's not fleshed out as much as it
- 1:13:10Speaker 5: should be. Hopefully.
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: Well, they both make maybe visually, you could say that
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: they both make visually striking. emotionally shallow movie for years.
- 1:13:22Speaker 5: That's what I always said about Michael Bay. I was like,
- 1:13:25Speaker 5: he really doesn't need to be a director. Like what
- 1:13:27Speaker 5: if you brought him in as like your cinematographer or
- 1:13:30Speaker 5: he was just like a special effects supervisor and like
- 1:13:33Speaker 5: he could set up your action scene or he could
- 1:13:35Speaker 5: set up a scene in the way that you want
- 1:13:37Speaker 5: it lit digitally. Cause nothing's physically in any of their movies, but,
- 1:13:42Speaker 5: But like, if they know that technical part of it
- 1:13:45Speaker 5: so well that put them in charge of that, but
- 1:13:47Speaker 5: we ended up making them in charge of the whole movie,
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: which also means the story arc and they both sort
- 1:13:52Speaker 5: of fumble it in different cases in different movies. But
- 1:13:56Speaker 5: I don't know, like, would they work or would they
- 1:13:58Speaker 5: work better as a team? If it was like a
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: Coen brothers, like I, and we brought in a really
- 1:14:03Speaker 5: cool director to be the other half of this team.
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: And you come up with the cool visuals and you
- 1:14:07Speaker 5: set up the fight scenes and then I'll come in
- 1:14:09Speaker 5: and make sure the story lines up. And like, so
- 1:14:11Speaker 5: that maybe they need somebody else to like counterbalance, like
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: they can bring the visuals, somebody else bring the story
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: and like put together an awesome movie.
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: But it's like, I think that's what it is.
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: Is it like an ego thing that they would never
- 1:14:23Speaker 5: do that because they want to be in charge of everything?
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: Well, you know, they don't usually are, you know, Zach
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: will write one of his own movies, but it's usually,
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: you know, they're working with these writers, but I think
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: you've just, because they're visual, I'm not, I'm not talking,
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: I don't, I don't, I don't like really grouping Bay
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: with Snyder. Cause I mean, I, I really do like Snyder.
- 1:14:46Speaker 5: I like Snyder more, but I still feel like, yeah,
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: they do have some of the same problems.
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: Yeah. But, but their visual Zach's visual style is so different.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: driving the ship that you have to have a writer
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: of equal ego you know to uh or equal force
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: to try to make a crack in that veneer you
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: know then we get.
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: To like watchmen how about somebody like alan moore a
- 1:15:17Speaker 5: level-headed filmmaker like alan.
- 1:15:20Speaker 9: Moore i don't know if that's accurate either I would
- 1:15:26Speaker 9: say Watchmen, though, may be one of his stronger movies
- 1:15:29Speaker 9: because it does have that story behind it.
- 1:15:32Speaker 5: It's got a very nailed down story that he has
- 1:15:36Speaker 5: to follow to get, even if you change something really
- 1:15:38Speaker 5: big by the end of it, like it still follows
- 1:15:41Speaker 5: the story arc.
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:15:42Speaker 5: So again, that may be one of the easier ones
- 1:15:45Speaker 5: to sort of follow because he has to, he's on
- 1:15:48Speaker 5: train tracks. Essentially he can do whatever he wants along
- 1:15:51Speaker 5: the way, but he's still got to get to the
- 1:15:53Speaker 5: same end result more or less.
- 1:15:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:15:55Speaker 5: With, you know, that the comics set up for him.
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: So, yeah.
- 1:15:58Speaker 8: Exactly.
- 1:15:58Speaker 5: Again, like, he needs something to kind of restrict him
- 1:16:01Speaker 5: and at least keep him on his path of, like, no, no,
- 1:16:04Speaker 5: we're going here. Stay on the track. Stay on the track. Right.
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: Right. So, I mean, and the fact that it's so...
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: His work has some kind of spirit of true appreciation
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: for this material. He never... is like making fun of
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: it or, uh, no, I think he's fully invested.
- 1:16:25Speaker 5: He is a fan of it.
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: I think he is a, he has drank the Kool-Aid.
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: I mean, I think he likes this shit and he's
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: got the resources to do a version of it. And
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: I go like, you know, I, I feel like it's
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: coming from a real spot with him, you know? And
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: so with Michael Bay, I feel like, he could be
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: just making Pepsi commercials and be fine, you know?
- 1:16:50Speaker 5: And it, it, except for the ego. I think he likes, right.
- 1:16:54Speaker 5: He's got such an ego that I think he likes
- 1:16:56Speaker 5: making the big, crazy over the top movies because that's
- 1:16:59Speaker 5: his MO. Like that makes him be the guy he
- 1:17:02Speaker 5: wants to be. I don't think Snyder's as worried about that,
- 1:17:05Speaker 5: but I think post DC universe, he's almost getting there
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: because they, the fans built him up so much with
- 1:17:12Speaker 5: the Snyder cut kind of thing and like creating his
- 1:17:14Speaker 5: own universe kind of thing that I think before that
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: he was a little more of like project driven, you know,
- 1:17:20Speaker 5: I like this. I want to create this version of
- 1:17:22Speaker 5: it on screen. Whereas now I think he's had his
- 1:17:25Speaker 5: ego built up so much by the fan base that like,
- 1:17:28Speaker 5: it's hard for him to do that.
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: Probably.
- 1:17:30Speaker 5: He's gotta be like, well, I've got to make something
- 1:17:32Speaker 5: bigger because that's what they expect of me. And I
- 1:17:34Speaker 5: think he started, he came from a better place, I
- 1:17:37Speaker 5: feel like, but now he may be ending up in
- 1:17:40Speaker 5: Bay territory, unfortunately.
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: Yeah. Maybe a victim of his, a victim of his
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: success there, you know, that, that, that, you know, that happens.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: I mean, you know, Lucas never went and made his
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: little tone poems. I mean, thank God. You know?
- 1:17:55Speaker 5: Hey, did you not see Red Tails? Come on. You know? Right, right. Oh, wait,
- 1:17:58Speaker 5: nobody saw Red Tails.
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh. Exactly. But, yeah, yeah. So, I mean,
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: you become like... You become like, this is now how
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: I pay my bills. So, you know... So, there is
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: like a.
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: Zack Snyder may be trapped into... going in these territories, uh,
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: because he's in this moving mechanism that isn't going to
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: stop to let him reconsider.
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: It is an industry. If nothing else, it is.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: An industry show business. And they said, and, and, and, uh,
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: Netflix got in cahoots with them and Netflix is, you know,
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: trying to get subscribers. I mean, they're eventually going to,
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: you know, everybody's going to have the subscription, you know,
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: so whether you like it or not, whether you're not, there's,
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: there is a ceiling for this, you know? So he gets,
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: got to keep the people happy. So we don't have
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: star Wars, but.
- 1:19:05Speaker 5: We can get, we've killed that franchise now.
- 1:19:07Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:19:07Speaker 3: Right. Right.
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: Exactly. But Disney doesn't even have Star Wars.
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: Only Rey can save us. Only Rey can save us.
- 1:19:15Speaker 5: She is the chosen one.
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 1:19:19Speaker 4: It's done.
- 1:19:23Speaker 10: But.
- 1:19:24Speaker 5: Well, we've lost all those big... We also don't have
- 1:19:26Speaker 5: Marvel anymore, you know? It's like they've all kind of
- 1:19:29Speaker 5: tanked lately to the point that I just saw the
- 1:19:32Speaker 5: ad this morning for the Echo. And it's like now because...
- 1:19:37Speaker 5: I guess they've taken so much flack or people have
- 1:19:39Speaker 5: lost so much faith in them. They're dropping the entire
- 1:19:42Speaker 5: series at once. Instead of pacing it out once a week,
- 1:19:45Speaker 5: like they've done for every other one like this, every
- 1:19:48Speaker 5: Star Wars show, every Marvel show. Now, I guess they've
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: taken so much heat for not delivering lately that they're like,
- 1:19:55Speaker 5: what if we give them all to you one time?
- 1:19:56Speaker 5: Because you guys complain because you have to wait a week.
- 1:19:58Speaker 5: So how about we like, they just feel so desperate.
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: Please, please stay with us.
- 1:20:03Speaker 5: I swear we're going to deliver something you like. I swear.
- 1:20:07Speaker 5: It just feels so desperate now.
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: Oh my God. You're right. It's just almost like the customers, the, the,
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: the people's need for, you know, a constant new product.
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: It's like the Sarlacc pit, you know? And, and like, uh,
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: like all these disney executives all these people in suits
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: you know and everything are like just frantically trying to like.
- 1:20:31Speaker 5: My what can we do what can we do throw.
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: Down the pipe of the sarlacc you know i mean
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: like ah bring back this guy anything anything.
- 1:20:42Speaker 5: What do you want i mean again if ever the
- 1:20:44Speaker 5: audience is in charge what do you want from us
- 1:20:46Speaker 5: we'll do it anything i mean and that's that to me,
- 1:20:49Speaker 5: that's what killed star Wars. It's like, if you had
- 1:20:53Speaker 5: a focused vision from one person, maybe it'd be okay.
- 1:20:56Speaker 5: But it became, what do they want from us this time?
- 1:21:00Speaker 5: Like it just became readjusting for constant things to make
- 1:21:04Speaker 5: other people happy. And like, I don't know. Once you
- 1:21:07Speaker 5: get to like this movie, it's like, Zach seems like
- 1:21:09Speaker 5: a focused guy that would be hand on the wheel.
- 1:21:13Speaker 5: I'm going to drive this bus wherever the hell I
- 1:21:15Speaker 5: want to take it.
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: But I don't know.
- 1:21:17Speaker 5: Like, is he, because the fan base is so big now,
- 1:21:21Speaker 5: he's just be like, I don't know. Just do what
- 1:21:23Speaker 5: they expect them. No, no.
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: I mean, I can see that. I can see how this,
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: the industry has to be fed. Zack Snyder has to
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: deliver the Zack Snyder thing. So he's a trap frustrated
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: artist who really just wants to make Mike Nichols type movies.
- 1:21:42Speaker 5: Really focused art house stories is what I want to tell.
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: But the machine's making him do it.
- 1:21:48Speaker 5: But the sack pack won't let me. So I think
- 1:21:53Speaker 5: Zach is.
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: No, but I think Zach. seriously wanted to make his
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: version of star Wars and give it his thing and
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: give it speed ramps and give it like a femme
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: fatale character and give it, you know, uh, you know, and,
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: you know, call up all these visual references that he
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: loves and, and, um, you know, and basically make a,
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: an animated version of heavy metal, you know, or something,
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: you know.
- 1:22:21Speaker 5: Which is awesome in its own right.
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:22:25Speaker 5: But even that is like, when I think back on that,
- 1:22:28Speaker 5: I remember watching it recently. Well, in recent years for
- 1:22:31Speaker 5: the show. And I'm like, it looks amazing. And that's
- 1:22:34Speaker 5: what I remember as a kid with those visuals and like, look,
- 1:22:37Speaker 5: this is crazy. There's dragons and girls get naked. This
- 1:22:40Speaker 5: is amazing. And then like, I sat down and watched
- 1:22:42Speaker 5: it and went, you know, there's not much story to the,
- 1:22:46Speaker 5: I had that same issue. I was just like, this
- 1:22:49Speaker 5: is visually amazing. And I liked the groundbreaking thing they
- 1:22:52Speaker 5: were doing at the time. But when I watch it
- 1:22:54Speaker 5: as a story, there's little there. It's like, there's certain
- 1:22:57Speaker 5: ones that hold up better than others, but like, there's
- 1:23:00Speaker 5: so much of it. It's just like, look at all
- 1:23:02Speaker 5: the cool things on the screen.
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:23:05Speaker 5: Don't look any further than that. Just look at all
- 1:23:07Speaker 5: the cool things on the screen. Like, and so it's,
- 1:23:10Speaker 5: it's a trap. Like you get yourself into that.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: This isn't, this isn't, you're not incorrect with this.
- 1:23:16Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: I think for, just because of my personal taste, I
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: allow Zack Snyder to beat me into submission.
- 1:23:27Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:23:28Speaker 5: This is what you're into.
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: This beats me into submission. Bring out the Gimp. His
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: art direction beats me into submission until I become compliant
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: to his movies.
- 1:23:44Speaker 5: Where's the t-shirt? I'm a Zack Snyder Gimp. They have
- 1:23:50Speaker 5: to start selling those. I'll take it. Whatever he's willing
- 1:23:53Speaker 5: to deal out to me, I'll take it.
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: That's right. Whatever horror characterization or backstory I put up with,
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: because his art direction is so overpowering that I cannot
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: resist the art direction in these movies.
- 1:24:10Speaker 8: Oh, God.
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: So, yeah, I know he hits.
- 1:24:12Speaker 3: Me, but.
- 1:24:23Speaker 5: He's still a good man.
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: He's still a good man.
- 1:24:25Speaker 5: I'm going to stay with him because he's a good man.
- 1:24:28Speaker 5: He takes care of me. Sometimes he brings me another
- 1:24:30Speaker 5: movie and I'm like, I like it. I mean, I
- 1:24:34Speaker 5: kind of, I tell him I like it. And then
- 1:24:37Speaker 5: I get some popcorn and then I wait and he
- 1:24:39Speaker 5: gets me another movie.
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: He showed me a pretty picture the other day and
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: so I forgave him.
- 1:24:48Speaker 5: Oh, so sad. So yeah, it's not, it's not. Okay.
- 1:24:53Speaker 5: So yeah, it's an unhealthy relationship with a filmmaker.
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: Now that I say it out loud. Yeah. It's not,
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: it's not what you really would have wanted for yourself.
- 1:25:07Speaker 5: Oh man. Yeah. I really didn't know how to process that.
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: And this just, this is hurting my brain.
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:25:14Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you know... Yeah, I mean, I get it.
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: I mean, I get it. But for whatever reason, it
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: made more... I just go, like, I feel... Now, this
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: is it. I go, like... I mean, there were scenes
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: where you're just, like, quoting the connecting scene from Star Wars,
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: you know? Like, the scene in the bar, you know?
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: And you're going, like.
- 1:25:34Speaker 5: It's a one-to-one comparison. I'm like, this is what he's
- 1:25:38Speaker 5: trying to do here. Oh, yeah.
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: And you're going, like, yeah, yeah, okay. I totally see it.
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: And for whatever reason... For me, it works in a
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: chat GPT kind of way.
- 1:25:52Speaker 5: Well, I think, and that's part of what's so frustrating
- 1:25:54Speaker 5: is like, I see the parts of it. And I'm like, again,
- 1:25:57Speaker 5: I like her as an actress. I think she's great
- 1:26:00Speaker 5: in some of these action scenes. So I'm like, in
- 1:26:03Speaker 5: a better product, I would love to see her do
- 1:26:06Speaker 5: this and her be the leading character.
- 1:26:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:26:09Speaker 5: And it just doesn't deliver on that. And that's, again,
- 1:26:12Speaker 5: I think if it was without merit at all, I'd
- 1:26:14Speaker 5: be like, fuck this movie and I'd move on. But like,
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: I think because it has so much good stuff and
- 1:26:19Speaker 5: it has, uh, a possibility that if it were like
- 1:26:22Speaker 5: you reshuffle the deck and put it together so that
- 1:26:25Speaker 5: like she comes out as, as a bad-ass character. And like,
- 1:26:28Speaker 5: we understand why everybody's doing everything and it has an
- 1:26:31Speaker 5: arc within the single movie. And like, if you had
- 1:26:34Speaker 5: all that come together, it would just nail it and
- 1:26:37Speaker 5: like piece that together with his visuals and it would
- 1:26:40Speaker 5: be great. So it's like, I think that's why I
- 1:26:43Speaker 5: get so upset with it is like, it's not like
- 1:26:45Speaker 5: it's terrible across the board. There's so many good things
- 1:26:47Speaker 5: it has. but it just drops the ball on these
- 1:26:50Speaker 5: others that I'm just like, but if you just did
- 1:26:53Speaker 5: this and this, it would like, it would all come together.
- 1:26:55Speaker 5: You know, it's like, that's why it's more frustrating. I think.
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:27:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: I mean, I hear you. I hear you. I mean,
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: these are valid criticism. You're not wrong, but I, and
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: I don't want to fault you for liking it.
- 1:27:11Speaker 5: That's why I'm saying there's so many good things I
- 1:27:13Speaker 5: see there that I also agree with you at points
- 1:27:16Speaker 5: of like, yes, this looks amazing. And, this is cool.
- 1:27:19Speaker 5: So yeah, again, I wanted to hear what your thoughts.
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: Are on it. Yeah. I got, I got seduced by
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: a pretty face. What can I tell you?
- 1:27:28Speaker 5: I mean, it just really happens to the best.
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: I mean, you know, it's kind of like you started
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: talking to this, like, uh, this, this attractive lady at
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: a party. And, you know, then you realize that she's
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: just like a, a series of sound bites from, uh,
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: you know, Fox news. And then you're like, Oh, Oh man,
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: you know, I know exactly what you're going to say next,
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: you know? And they don't disappoint.
- 1:27:53Speaker 5: See, I was going a different way. I thought you
- 1:27:56Speaker 5: thought she was the girl next door and you were
- 1:27:58Speaker 5: sappily falling in love with her. And then you get
- 1:28:02Speaker 5: to the bed at the end of the night and
- 1:28:03Speaker 5: she asked for your credit card. You're like, oh, I
- 1:28:07Speaker 5: thought we were having a thing, but you're just here
- 1:28:11Speaker 5: for the transaction.
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: That's not the Rebel Moon I fell in love with.
- 1:28:19Speaker 5: Hook her with a heart of gold. No, no, no.
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: No, that's Star Wars. Star Wars is the girl you
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: loved in high school.
- 1:28:26Speaker 5: Oh, the overall Star Wars experience. Perhaps I will do it. Again,
- 1:28:32Speaker 5: I was like, original trilogy. No, no.
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: The overall Star Wars experience.
- 1:28:36Speaker 5: Okay, I'll give you that. Yes.
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: The girl you fell in love with is... in high
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: school and you.
- 1:28:42Speaker 5: Come back to the reunion you come back you come
- 1:28:45Speaker 5: back to town you come back to your old town
- 1:28:47Speaker 5: and she's standing on the street corner you're like oh
- 1:28:51Speaker 5: but I still want to love her now I can
- 1:28:54Speaker 5: for a set amount of money.
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: That's right exactly Exactly. It's like, oh, hi, Timmy. I
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: ain't seen you in a few years. And you're like,
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: Star Wars?
- 1:29:04Speaker 5: He's like, yeah. I was like, what happened to you?
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: Ah, times have been rough, Timmy.
- 1:29:08Speaker 5: Times have been rough.
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: Girls gotta do what a girl's gotta do.
- 1:29:12Speaker 5: And you're like, but I still kinda love you. How much?
- 1:29:16Speaker 11: How much?
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: You have all the Star Wars you could possibly ever want.
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: And yet it's unfulfilling. It's like a Twilight Zone episode.
- 1:29:32Speaker 5: All the time in the world, I broke my Star
- 1:29:35Speaker 5: Wars glasses.
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: May you get the old gypsy curse. May you get
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: everything you've ever wanted. You know, it's like, yeah, awesome. Anyway, well,
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: the gypsy curse did bring me a Zachified Star Wars movie,
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: which was pretty to look at at all times. And
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: I didn't mind the fact that it looked like, you know, storyboards,
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: animated storyboards like.
- 1:30:02Speaker 5: I did with any really nice animated storyboard.
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: Really nice. You know, sometimes I can get on board
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: if a movie works equally as well as a limited
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: series of Trapper Keepers, you know, and I do love some.
- 1:30:17Speaker 5: Good Trapper Keeper artwork. I got to say that quality stuff.
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: And if you saw any frame of this movie on
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: a trapper keeper in 1983, that is absolutely the trapper
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: keeper you would pick up.
- 1:30:32Speaker 5: You're like, mom, that's it. We don't have to go
- 1:30:34Speaker 5: down the aisle anymore. I found it. Grab a stack
- 1:30:38Speaker 5: of loose leaf and some pencils. We're heading out to
- 1:30:41Speaker 5: the register. I found mine for the year. Which leads
- 1:30:48Speaker 5: me to my bigger question of when are we going
- 1:30:52Speaker 5: to get, I mean, we get these visual stylists that
- 1:30:54Speaker 5: deliver us these movies. When are we getting a Lisa
- 1:30:56Speaker 5: Frank movie?
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: A Lisa Frank movie?
- 1:30:59Speaker 5: When do we get like a big epic tale told
- 1:31:03Speaker 5: in the visual style of Lisa Frank?
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: Oh my God. Okay, Brian, you just threw me. What is,
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: I don't, who's the Lisa Frank style?
- 1:31:11Speaker 5: Oh, it is made for Trapper Keeper. She edges a
- 1:31:14Speaker 5: little more towards the 90s kids.
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: Okay, hold on one second. Let me look it up.
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: Google Lisa Frank and you will completely understand.
- 1:31:23Speaker 5: For those of you at home, you know the Lisa Franks.
- 1:31:25Speaker 5: If not, play the same game. Google it up and
- 1:31:28Speaker 5: you'll be like, oh, what movie?
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: Trapper Keeper.
- 1:31:32Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 1:31:36Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 1:31:38Speaker 5: She is an epic visual storyteller that needs an epic
- 1:31:42Speaker 5: movie to capture the visual style that is Lisa Frank.
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: Oh, my God. Wow.
- 1:31:49Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: That is melting my brain.
- 1:31:51Speaker 5: She is an amazing artist.
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: And exactly what we're talking about here.
- 1:31:59Speaker 5: Yeah, she has captured still images that are phenomenal and mind-bending.
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: But of a singular style. I'm not saying I like this.
- 1:32:11Speaker 5: But you kind of do, don't lie.
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: No, there's something... there's something shocking about it, but of
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: a unified vision that I'm glad I don't live in
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: Lisa Frank's head.
- 1:32:22Speaker 5: Oh, it would make your brain explode.
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:32:24Speaker 5: Yeah. I'm like, what if, because again, we've seen something
- 1:32:27Speaker 5: like a spider verse that like takes a visual, almost
- 1:32:30Speaker 5: comic book style and like brings it to life and
- 1:32:33Speaker 5: gives us a story. What if we have a character
- 1:32:36Speaker 5: in this Lisa Frank world that's going on with, I mean, it's,
- 1:32:40Speaker 5: it's damn near toontown from Roger Rabbit. I mean, but,
- 1:32:43Speaker 5: think of the insanity that would be completely captured and
- 1:32:48Speaker 5: immersed in this Lisa Frank style. I kind of want
- 1:32:51Speaker 5: to see it.
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: I can't, it can't, it can never happen.
- 1:32:54Speaker 5: It would melt my brain. It can never happen.
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: It would be the end of humanity.
- 1:32:59Speaker 5: I mean, I'm okay with that. Humanity has really finished
- 1:33:03Speaker 5: its cycle. It had a run. I'm not saying a
- 1:33:06Speaker 5: good run. It had a run and it's kind of
- 1:33:08Speaker 5: at the end. If we're going out, we're going out
- 1:33:11Speaker 5: Lisa Frank style.
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: I mean, Lisa Frank style is a sign of the apocalypse.
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: I mean, it is the sign of the end. Amen.
- 1:33:19Speaker 5: Bring it unto us.
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: I mean, yeah. I mean, it's over. It's over.
- 1:33:25Speaker 5: I mean, this is it. This is it.
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: This is it. I mean, you know, the TV show.
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: where the singers are wearing costumes, and you.
- 1:33:36Speaker 5: Can't see their face. Yeah, I like that shoe. That's
- 1:33:38Speaker 5: pretty cool, too.
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: Yeah, well, you're a nihilist.
- 1:33:40Speaker 5: I just watched that. John Schneider was the runner-up. He
- 1:33:45Speaker 5: was in a giant donut costume, and it was the
- 1:33:48Speaker 5: most horrifying thing I've ever seen.
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: Listen, listen. You are obviously Slim Pickens riding the atom bomb. Yeah.
- 1:33:56Speaker 5: Because.
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: that you get enjoyment from this is a sign of, uh,
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: of fatalistic.
- 1:34:06Speaker 5: Look, we can't fight in the war room. Let's just
- 1:34:10Speaker 5: agree that we're at the end of days. We have
- 1:34:14Speaker 5: some different side issues with this movie.
- 1:34:17Speaker 8: Okay.
- 1:34:18Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: All right. Wrap up all of humanity.
- 1:34:21Speaker 5: It's the end of this episode.
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: Okay. Sorry about that. I didn't mean to go. I
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: didn't mean to go on the attack.
- 1:34:28Speaker 8: Oh, no.
- 1:34:29Speaker 5: I mean, I've kind of attacked you the whole episode.
- 1:34:31Speaker 5: So I certainly I'm willing to take my share. Sorry.
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: It wasn't your fault. It was the Lisa Frank images. Sorry.
- 1:34:40Speaker 5: Because they're epic.
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: Brought a darkness out. But before we wrap it up,
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: I just have to say that in closing, Zack Snyder is...
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: a good filmmaker, but he is an amazing trapper keeper designer.
- 1:35:03Speaker 5: I do not argue with that statement. That's the genius
- 1:35:09Speaker 5: level of Lisa Frank.
- 1:35:10Speaker 2: I don't know, but I think, I think they're like
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: siblings from a different, you know, lost siblings. I mean,
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: it's almost like, I mean, it's almost like, yeah, they,
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: they came from the same factory, you know?
- 1:35:23Speaker 5: Yeah. Well, we've covered a lot of ground.
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: We have. Oh, man, it's almost 2 o'clock. Okay, yeah.
- 1:35:33Speaker 3: Wow. Okay.
- 1:35:34Speaker 5: Yes. I don't know that we've answered anyone's question, but
- 1:35:37Speaker 5: we've covered a lot of ground. We've asked a lot
- 1:35:40Speaker 5: of questions along the way. And we'll let you make
- 1:35:43Speaker 5: up your mind at home of all the ills of humanity.
- 1:35:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:35:47Speaker 5: For real. If the world is ready to end right now.
- 1:35:50Speaker 5: And we'll go ahead and just call it and wrap
- 1:35:52Speaker 5: it up.
- 1:35:52Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: Wrapping it up. That sounds good.
- 1:35:55Speaker 5: Not just the episode, but all of humanity.
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 1:35:57Speaker 5: Okay. Time to wrap it up. All right.
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: All right. We're calling it.
- 1:36:01Speaker 3: Maybe. Wow.
- 1:36:02Speaker 5: If not, if humanity comes back, we'll, we'll be back
- 1:36:05Speaker 5: to do more episodes. Cause again, I like when we
- 1:36:07Speaker 5: hang out virtually and have these discussions, even if we're
- 1:36:11Speaker 5: on opposite ends of the spectrum.
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: That, that makes the best.
- 1:36:14Speaker 5: It makes it for a good conversation.
- 1:36:16Speaker 2: Absolutely. I'm glad we did not agree on rebel moon. That,
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: that made sense.
- 1:36:20Speaker 5: It definitely brought a whole different perspective to it. That's
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: why as we got into it, I was like, well,
- 1:36:26Speaker 5: now I definitely want to have this talk because if
- 1:36:28Speaker 5: we both just agree on all the same points, then
- 1:36:30Speaker 5: we're going nowhere. So I like having some differing opinions
- 1:36:34Speaker 5: and kind of expanding on all of these things and
- 1:36:37Speaker 5: trying to find an answer that I don't know if
- 1:36:39Speaker 5: we did, but you know. It was a fun ride
- 1:36:41Speaker 5: along the way. And isn't that what you want from
- 1:36:44Speaker 5: a Zack Snyder movie?
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: That's right. That's right. This is something that the world
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: can learn from. That if two people can still see,
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: disagree about Zack Snyder, but still, you know, have mutual
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: respect for each other.
- 1:36:59Speaker 5: Most definitely.
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: I mean, that's, that's what. That's what's important, everybody.
- 1:37:03Speaker 5: I highly respect your opinion. Even after these things that
- 1:37:09Speaker 5: you've said.
- 1:37:11Speaker 2: After the love for Mickey and Zack Snyder. And Slave
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: Girls from Infinity. I mean, it's just like, you know.
- 1:37:21Speaker 5: Well, that one's top quality. So that one, I... That's
- 1:37:25Speaker 5: what saved you, really.
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: Basically, we have established that I like Rebel Moon because
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: basically I have bad taste.
- 1:37:36Speaker 5: Oh, I certainly have been accused by myself of having
- 1:37:40Speaker 5: bad taste. So I will not sell you down the
- 1:37:42Speaker 5: river on that one. I like a lot of questionable things.
- 1:37:46Speaker 3: Nice.
- 1:37:46Speaker 5: So we're both in that same boat and we'll stay
- 1:37:51Speaker 5: there until next time. All right.
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: Sounds good.
- 1:37:54Speaker 5: So we shall return somewhere down the line to have
- 1:37:57Speaker 5: more of these ridiculous discussions. Thank you for coming along
- 1:38:01Speaker 5: with me on this journey.
- 1:38:02Speaker 4: And sure.
- 1:38:03Speaker 5: If anyone else is still out there, thank you for listening.
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 1:38:11Speaker 7: Anyway.
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: You side bastards.
- 1:38:15Speaker 5: Oh, it's your girlfriend from high school. She's made a
- 1:38:18Speaker 5: return appearance.
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: Star Wars. No, what happened to you?
- 1:38:21Speaker 5: Ah, yeah, times are rough. Get out your charge cards,
- 1:38:25Speaker 5: you sorry bastards. It's time for another sequel trilogy. Yeah,
- 1:38:29Speaker 5: I'll do the robot for you.
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: Boop-beep-boop-boop-bop.
- 1:38:33Speaker 5: That's what you like, right? You like them robots.
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: You want me to use the force?
- 1:38:36Speaker 5: That's a little extra, honey. Otherwise, that about does it.
- 1:38:43Speaker 5: We're going to return next time. Same geek feed. Thanks
- 1:38:45Speaker 5: for listening. Thanks. Little devil, I.
- 1:39:19Speaker 8: Can lie to it as little as I can I'm
- 1:39:22Speaker 8: on the level, I like it better I break all
- 1:39:25Speaker 8: the rules just to try to make her understand.
- 1:39:30Speaker 5: I'm under the rage It's a crying shame Teachers seem
- 1:39:37Speaker 5: all the same I'm.
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: Not the one to blame.
- 1:39:44Speaker 5: I'm a better little devil.
- 1:39:46Speaker 8: I get by doing as little as I can.
- 1:39:50Speaker 5: I'm on the level.
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: I like happy metal.
- 1:39:54Speaker 8: I get away with as much as I can.
- 1:39:58Speaker 4: I break all the rules.
- 1:40:01Speaker 5: Just don't take me for a fool.
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: Don't try to keep me at the school. And I
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: want to know where to go The look on my
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: face is just for show My plans are messed up,
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: didn't know education Just can't wait for permanent vacation Hey,
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: I'm a rebel, a little devil I get by doing as.
- 1:41:46Speaker 8: Little as I can I'm on the level, I like
- 1:41:48Speaker 8: every vessel Break all the rules, just try to make
- 1:41:55Speaker 8: them understand My mind's in a rage It's a crying
- 1:42:01Speaker 8: shame We all got it the same I'm a rebel,
- 1:42:09Speaker 8: little devil.
- 1:42:11Speaker 5: I get by doing as little as I can.
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: I'm on the level, I like heavy metal. Break all
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: the rules, just trying to make them understand.
- 1:42:23Speaker 5: I'm a rebel, little devil. I get by doing as
- 1:42:26Speaker 5: little as I can.
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: I'm on the level, I like heavy metal. I get
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: away with as much.
- 1:42:37Speaker 5: Yeah, I know. I know.
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: I appreciate it. These things are such a, uh, therapy,
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: mental purge session and everything. It's, uh, it's kind of
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: like dreaming, you know, like let you organize your thoughts
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: and the subconscious. So that's what these, uh, these podcasts
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: are like for me.
- 1:42:57Speaker 4: They're just like, I feel.
- 1:42:58Speaker 5: Like when I get worked up, I do a lot
- 1:42:59Speaker 5: of yelling about movies. Yeah. I don't know that anybody wants,
- 1:43:04Speaker 5: but I do it anyway. It's like, this is the
- 1:43:06Speaker 5: only way I had to get this out. I have
- 1:43:09Speaker 5: to voice my dumb opinion. Not that anyone cares, but
- 1:43:14Speaker 5: I have to get it out. It's an exorcism of sorts.
- 1:43:17Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: It's eating me up inside.
- 1:43:20Speaker 5: You gotta get it out of me.
- 1:43:24Speaker 2: I can't walk around pretending to be a normal person
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: all the time. If I've got these nagging.
- 1:43:28Speaker 5: Thoughts, certainly not. And I can't pretend when I'm overrun
- 1:43:32Speaker 5: with these feelings inside. That's right. Spelled from me. Right.
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: Right. When I'm like, you know, coming to grips with my, uh,
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: self-destructive relationship with Zack Snyder. I like, uh, sometimes i
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: gotta just talk that stuff out you know.
- 1:43:47Speaker 5: Yeah i think we had a real breakthrough today i
- 1:43:49Speaker 5: think we did i think we did i think i
- 1:43:50Speaker 5: know i've got um i gotta set up boundaries with
- 1:43:53Speaker 5: sex i think we'll revisit that in your next session
- 1:43:56Speaker 5: and uh right really made some breakthroughs today made.
- 1:43:59Speaker 2: Some breakthroughs today absolutely no that's good i feel like
- 1:44:03Speaker 2: i've uh purged some thoughts there about rebel moon and.
- 1:44:07Speaker 5: Uh spirits left the building.
- 1:44:09Speaker 2: Yeah i got to complain about uh Christmas story of
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: the musical to a wider audience other than my family you.
- 1:44:16Speaker 5: Know which are sick of hearing your complaints I'm sure.
- 1:44:20Speaker 2: I know they don't they're like dad why do you
- 1:44:23Speaker 2: even care about this stuff.
- 1:44:24Speaker 7: Stop watching things exactly it looks like this stuff brings
- 1:44:30Speaker 7: you no pleasure so I mean why do you keep
- 1:44:33Speaker 7: doing it because he.
- 1:44:36Speaker 5: Really loves me I keep coming back because he loves me.
- 1:44:42Speaker 2: Do the speed ramp like you used to.
- 1:44:44Speaker 5: All right, fine.
- 1:44:50Speaker 2: You still love me. You still love me.
- 1:44:54Speaker 5: You brought your credit card, right?
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: I'll renew my subscription right now, Mr. Snyder.
- 1:45:00Speaker 5: You do that. You're not going to get my director's
- 1:45:03Speaker 5: cut without it.
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: Oh man. They should, they should with the AI technology,
- 1:45:08Speaker 2: they should have the Snyder cut of every movie.
- 1:45:11Speaker 5: Well, I mean, they kind of do now like each
- 1:45:13Speaker 5: of these, but that's what I thought was so ridiculous.
- 1:45:16Speaker 5: Like we're planning the Snyder cut before we're even done
- 1:45:19Speaker 5: with the first of this series of movies. I was like,
- 1:45:23Speaker 5: that is a weird calculated move that like it's different
- 1:45:26Speaker 5: when it was justice league which like got screwed up
- 1:45:30Speaker 5: a whole tragedy in his life a new director came
- 1:45:32Speaker 5: in like at least had reasons in the real world
- 1:45:35Speaker 5: that like okay he didn't get to make the thing
- 1:45:37Speaker 5: he wanted to i understand like that made a little
- 1:45:40Speaker 5: more sense for me but this one just seems like
- 1:45:42Speaker 5: freaking frustrating money grab.
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: Don't worry you're going to get a Snyder cut and
- 1:45:51Speaker 2: you're like nobody asked it's.
- 1:45:54Speaker 5: Different like the Justice League when like people were on
- 1:45:56Speaker 5: the internet up in arms we gotta have it nobody's
- 1:45:59Speaker 5: asking this time the movie hadn't even come out yet
- 1:46:02Speaker 5: calm the fuck.
- 1:46:03Speaker 2: Down I'm saying there should be a Snyder cut of
- 1:46:06Speaker 2: like pretty woman you know that's what I'm saying you
- 1:46:08Speaker 2: should be able to take any movie and hit Snyder
- 1:46:12Speaker 2: cut that one I could.
- 1:46:13Speaker 5: Actually have You've heard the story of that one, right?
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Like the dark underbelly. Well, I mean, yeah,
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: it's like beginning.
- 1:46:23Speaker 5: It was 3000 because it was named after the money
- 1:46:26Speaker 5: she was getting.
- 1:46:29Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:46:29Speaker 5: Like the whole thing was like scripted as that. And
- 1:46:32Speaker 5: it was nothing but him as a director going, nah,
- 1:46:35Speaker 5: let's do this. And like, he's just winging it on
- 1:46:37Speaker 5: the day of shooting and like using, yeah, like using
- 1:46:41Speaker 5: cuts of stuff when they didn't even know that the
- 1:46:42Speaker 5: camera's rolling. And like he pieced together a story that
- 1:46:45Speaker 5: they didn't even know was there.
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:46:48Speaker 5: I'm like, you know, I'd kind of like to see
- 1:46:50Speaker 5: some of these behind the scene bits and pieces and
- 1:46:53Speaker 5: like make your own pretty woman. Where's the edit yourself
- 1:46:59Speaker 5: a pretty woman? Right, right.
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: Well, man, maybe Gary Marshall's a genius. I don't know.
- 1:47:04Speaker 5: I think he kind of is. Yeah, he could be, man.
- 1:47:06Speaker 5: In his own weird way. Yeah.
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: Gary Marshall, huh? Who knew?
- 1:47:13Speaker 5: I need, like, a nap now.
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: Yeah, man, totally. Totally, yeah.
