- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio The Bible Study Podcast, Episode nine fifty four. Today,
- 0:08Speaker 1: The Bible Study Podcast continues the study of the Book
- 0:11Speaker 1: of Luke with more from chapter nineteen. Welcome to the
- 0:23Speaker 1: Bible Study Podcast. I'm your host, Chris Kristensen. We're going
- 0:26Speaker 1: to continue on with the Palm Sunday story here from Luke.
- 0:30Speaker 1: But first a word from this sponsor. So the section
- 0:36Speaker 1: of my Bible here that we're going to be dealing
- 0:38Speaker 1: with today is not labeled Palm Sunday. It is labeled
- 0:42Speaker 1: Jesus comes to Jerusalem as King. Now that's important because
- 0:47Speaker 1: it's going to be a context for all of what's
- 0:50Speaker 1: going to happen here in Holy Week, or what we
- 0:52Speaker 1: call Holy Week, which is Palm Sunday to Easter. And
- 0:57Speaker 1: remember that the last section we had in last episode
- 1:01Speaker 1: with the parable of the ten Minas, started with Luke
- 1:04Speaker 1: telling us while they were listening to this, he went
- 1:07Speaker 1: on to tell him a parable because he was near
- 1:09Speaker 1: Jerusalem and the people thought that the Kingdom of God
- 1:13Speaker 1: was going to appear at once. So they thought he
- 1:16Speaker 1: was going to appear as a king in a very
- 1:19Speaker 1: real earthly sense, and that would mean kicking out the
- 1:22Speaker 1: Romans to be king and because there is no other
- 1:27Speaker 1: king here except for Caesar, we talk about King Herod.
- 1:30Speaker 1: There is a King Herod still, but he is further
- 1:33Speaker 1: north than not in Jerusalem. And so people are potentially,
- 1:38Speaker 1: as they're doing what they're doing here on what we
- 1:40Speaker 1: call Palm Sunday, have the wrong impression of what Jesus
- 1:44Speaker 1: is there to do. That is going to affect their behavior.
- 1:49Speaker 1: It might also be affecting why later on that week
- 1:52Speaker 1: they're going to be crying crucify him, some of the
- 1:54Speaker 1: same people, quite possibly. But it also has influence on
- 1:59Speaker 1: what the religious leaders are thinking, because they have life
- 2:03Speaker 1: pretty good. And if Jesus proclaims himself as king in
- 2:07Speaker 1: opposition to the Romans, if he declares a rebellion against Rome,
- 2:12Speaker 1: Rome is quite possibly going to come in and do
- 2:15Speaker 1: what they did do later on, which is destroy the place.
- 2:19Speaker 1: And so they are aware of that and that may
- 2:23Speaker 1: impact the way that they react to Jesus later this week.
- 2:27Speaker 1: So Palm Sunday, after Jesus had said this, he went
- 2:31Speaker 1: on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. As he approaches Bethphage
- 2:35Speaker 1: and Bethany on the hill called the Mount of Olives,
- 2:37Speaker 1: he sent two of his disciples saying to them, go
- 2:40Speaker 1: to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it,
- 2:43Speaker 1: you will find a cult tied there which no one
- 2:46Speaker 1: has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If
- 2:49Speaker 1: anyone asks, why are you untying it, say the Lord
- 2:52Speaker 1: needs it. Those who were sent ahead went and found it,
- 2:55Speaker 1: just as Jesus had told them. As they were untying
- 2:58Speaker 1: the cult, its owners ask them, why are you untying
- 3:02Speaker 1: the colt? They applied, the Lord needs it. They brought
- 3:05Speaker 1: it to Jesus, threw their cloaks over the colt, and
- 3:08Speaker 1: put Jesus on it. As he went along, people spread
- 3:12Speaker 1: their cloaks on the road. When they came to the
- 3:15Speaker 1: place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives,
- 3:17Speaker 1: the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God
- 3:21Speaker 1: in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Blessed is the King who comes in the name of
- 3:27Speaker 1: the Lord, Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, Teacher,
- 3:34Speaker 1: rebuke your disciples, I tell you, he replied, if they
- 3:38Speaker 1: keep quiet, the stones will cry out. As he approached
- 3:42Speaker 1: Jerusalem and saw the city. He wept over it and said,
- 3:46Speaker 1: if you even you had only known on this day
- 3:49Speaker 1: what would bring you peace. But now it is hidden
- 3:52Speaker 1: from your eyes. The days will come upon you when
- 3:55Speaker 1: your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle
- 3:59Speaker 1: you in, you in on every side. They will dash
- 4:03Speaker 1: you to the ground. They will dash you to the ground,
- 4:05Speaker 1: you and the children within your walls. They will not
- 4:08Speaker 1: leave one stone on another because you did not recognize
- 4:11Speaker 1: the time of God's coming to you. So a couple
- 4:16Speaker 1: things going on there. We talked about the people's expectations.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Now some of the people here that we're talking about
- 4:21Speaker 1: are the disciples of Jesus, who he has been talking
- 4:25Speaker 1: to a lot about what's going on, and he's been
- 4:27Speaker 1: predicting his own death and things, and they don't get it,
- 4:30Speaker 1: and that's been quite clear from every time he says that.
- 4:33Speaker 1: But notice that they're calling out two different things. Blessed
- 4:37Speaker 1: is the King who comes the name of the Lord,
- 4:39Speaker 1: which is definitely one of those things that can cause
- 4:42Speaker 1: some concern among people because that is a threat to Caesar.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And so that's probably one of the reasons why the
- 4:49Speaker 1: Pharisees are saying rebuke your disciples, but it could be
- 4:52Speaker 1: just that they think that that is blasphemy, that they
- 4:55Speaker 1: think that he is not necessarily the Messiah. But then
- 5:00Speaker 1: they also say peace in heaven and glory in the
- 5:02Speaker 1: highest and we talk about Jesus as the Prince of peace,
- 5:06Speaker 1: which is really interesting because this week people are threatened
- 5:10Speaker 1: by him. They are threatened. What this means this sign
- 5:15Speaker 1: here of Jesus coming like a king mounted on not
- 5:20Speaker 1: a charger, not a war horse, but mounted on a colt,
- 5:25Speaker 1: and it is threatening to people who have power, to
- 5:30Speaker 1: the Romans, although they were less threatened certainly than to
- 5:34Speaker 1: the Jewish leaders. And Jesus says, yeah, I could rebut them,
- 5:39Speaker 1: but even the stones would cry out, this is a
- 5:41Speaker 1: day that has to happen. But then he pauses and
- 5:45Speaker 1: has this moment with Jerusalem. He has this moment with
- 5:49Speaker 1: this city that he loves, the city that God loves,
- 5:53Speaker 1: that has spent so much time rejecting the prophets and
- 5:56Speaker 1: is now soon going to reject him. And he weeps
- 6:00Speaker 1: over it because he can see towards that day that
- 6:04Speaker 1: Jerusalem will be destroyed, and it will be destroyed in
- 6:07Speaker 1: the lifetime of many of the people who are there.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Many of the disciples will live to the age to
- 6:13Speaker 1: see the destruction of Jerusalem. Some will not, some will
- 6:18Speaker 1: die beforehand, like James, who's the first of the apostles
- 6:22Speaker 1: to be killed. But John, for instance, will certainly be
- 6:26Speaker 1: alive when Jerusalem is destroyed. And then Jesus comes in,
- 6:31Speaker 1: and he does not kick out the Romans, or start
- 6:34Speaker 1: a revolt, or do anything like it would seem would
- 6:38Speaker 1: be appropriate, if that's the kind of king he was
- 6:41Speaker 1: going to be. Instead, he goes to the temple and
- 6:44Speaker 1: does this. When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began
- 6:48Speaker 1: to drive out those who were selling. It is written
- 6:51Speaker 1: he said to them, my house will be a house
- 6:53Speaker 1: of prayer, but you have made it a den of robbers.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Every day he was teaching in the temple, but the
- 6:59Speaker 1: chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the leaders
- 7:01Speaker 1: among the people were trying to kill him. Yet they
- 7:04Speaker 1: could not find a weight any way to do it,
- 7:07Speaker 1: because all the people hung on his words. So we
- 7:10Speaker 1: have two things going on here. He is opposing what
- 7:12Speaker 1: is going on in the temple. Now there is commerce
- 7:17Speaker 1: around the temple, and some of it is appropriate in
- 7:21Speaker 1: the sense that when you come to the temple. For instance,
- 7:25Speaker 1: when Jesus was dedicated to the temple, you may remember
- 7:28Speaker 1: that his parents brought two doves to sacrifice. Now, the
- 7:32Speaker 1: normal sacrifice would be a lamb, but they were poor
- 7:36Speaker 1: and so they brought two doves. Well, they didn't necessarily
- 7:39Speaker 1: bring two doves from home in Galilee or find two
- 7:43Speaker 1: doves in Bethlehem, but you could purchase them outside of
- 7:46Speaker 1: the temple, and if you didn't have the right coins,
- 7:50Speaker 1: if you were coming from somewhere else, you could change
- 7:54Speaker 1: your coins into the coins that you could use. And
- 7:58Speaker 1: so those functions outside the temple sort of makes sense.
- 8:03Speaker 1: But the idea that we have from elsewhere from the
- 8:06Speaker 1: other gospels is that they are cheating people. That they're
- 8:10Speaker 1: not there as a service to try and help people
- 8:13Speaker 1: do their sacrifice. But there it's kind of tourist trap, right,
- 8:18Speaker 1: you know those places that you go in and I
- 8:21Speaker 1: think of I'm going to pick on Europe here, particularly
- 8:24Speaker 1: because we don't always know the language and we don't
- 8:26Speaker 1: always know the way things work, and so it's easy
- 8:29Speaker 1: for us to become a mark and pay too much
- 8:32Speaker 1: for this or that. It's not only a European thing,
- 8:35Speaker 1: but just came to mind that way, and so it
- 8:39Speaker 1: appears that that's what's going on here. They've become a
- 8:41Speaker 1: den of robbers. You're not just performing a service, but
- 8:45Speaker 1: you're you're doing all of these things just to make
- 8:48Speaker 1: a buck. And there's no there's no soul in it,
- 8:51Speaker 1: there's no there's no sense of helping out the pilgrim
- 8:57Speaker 1: that's going on here. And so the first thing he
- 9:01Speaker 1: does when he gets to Jerusalem is he cleans out
- 9:03Speaker 1: the temple and drives out those there would be outside
- 9:07Speaker 1: of the temple in the temple courts and drives them out.
- 9:10Speaker 1: They're not in the holiest of pulleys. That's not what's
- 9:11Speaker 1: going on there. But and then he spends the rest
- 9:14Speaker 1: of the week teaching in the temple as he has
- 9:18Speaker 1: been teaching before. Again not what you expect from an
- 9:23Speaker 1: incoming king. But already by this point the break with
- 9:30Speaker 1: the religious leaders is such that they're already looking for
- 9:35Speaker 1: ways to kill him, but they can't because he's very,
- 9:38Speaker 1: very popular and all the people are around him. But
- 9:42Speaker 1: he won't be popular forever subtle foreshadowing of what's going
- 9:48Speaker 1: to happen later in the week, but not in this chapter.
- 9:51Speaker 1: And so with that wee end Chapter nineteen D this
