- 1:36next book is called The Thanksgiving Bow and it was
- 1:40published by Pelican Publishing Company. It has a copyright ear
- 1:45of two thousand and seven and the author is for
- 1:48Guinia Kroll. Thanksgiving Day dawned on a sunny town at
- 1:53Grandma Grace's big white house. Tommy tempting smells greeted her
- 1:57family as they came from far away homes. The yellow
- 2:02plastic Thanksgiving bowl sat on the front hall table beside
- 2:06a pad and pencil so that they all could jot
- 2:10down there I am thankful for things. Hours after the
- 2:14supper of roast turkey, chestnut stuffing, mashed potatoes, brown gravy,
- 2:19green greens, sweet corn, boiled yams, and cranberry sauce, Grandma
- 2:25Grace announced it's time. Since the Thanksgiving was unusually warm,
- 2:30Grandma Grace and the other grown up served pumpkin pie
- 2:33smothered with a whipped cream outside on the picnic table,
- 2:37and in their usual tradition, Grandma read each I AM
- 2:41thankful for aloud while everyone else guests who had written it.
- 2:47She unfolded the first one and read, I AM thankful
- 2:50for my cuddly calico Anni Kat, who came to stay
- 2:54last spring, Sarah. Several folks guests. Sarah smiled, thinking of
- 2:59any soft and soothing perr. Another one read, I am
- 3:02thankful for leftover so that the feast doesn't have to
- 3:05end today. Jeremy. The cousins yelled. The tall teenager bowed
- 3:11after each I am thankful for baby Josh. He clapped
- 3:14his chubvvy hands and said me too, which made everyone laugh.
- 3:19The very last slip of paper said, I am thankful
- 3:22that everyone I love is thankful. Grandma Grace shouted a
- 3:26chorus of voices. As the sun went down, the wind
- 3:31kicked up. Grown ups grab plates, forks and cups, and
- 3:34everyone rushed inside. The Thanksgiving bow tumbled to the ground
- 3:38unnoticed across the road to the Rooney's farm. It robed,
- 3:42bumping through rows of cornstalk, stubble and wilted pumpkin vines. Finally,
- 3:47it lodged upside down between two low bushes at the
- 3:51far end of the field. On a chilly December night,
- 3:55when the field was awash with the light of the
- 3:57full cold moon, a meadow mouse mpered about, nibbling left
- 4:01behind seeds. Suddenly she saw a silent winged barn owl
- 4:06coming toward her. The mouse eked and scurried away as
- 4:10the barn owl bore down. Oh but what was that
- 4:14brightly colored object? The mouse squeezed under that yellow plastic
- 4:19bow just as the barn owl's teylon scraped it. Oooh.
- 4:24The bow had a comforting smell and a cozy feel
- 4:27about it, so the mouse hunk her down, wrapped her
- 4:30tail around herself, and slept until she could safely get away.
- 4:34When she pushed her way out, the yellow plastic bow
- 4:37turned right side up and went rolling away in the
- 4:40wind again. On a blustry, jeanery snow day from school,
- 4:45Brad and Jeff found the bowl by their garage when
- 4:48they went out to make a snowman. What a perfect hat,
- 4:52Jeff said, and plunk it went on the snow man's head.
- 4:56In February, during unexpected thaw, the the yellow plastic bowl
- 5:01floated and they used to be snowman puddle till a
- 5:05breeze scent it rolling to a hill above a rushing stream.
- 5:09Too curious Otter saw it and got in wee. They
- 5:13slid swiftly down the hill in their flying saucer, bumping
- 5:17against a rock and tumbling out at the shore. The
- 5:21water carried the Thanksgiving bowl away. It didn't take long
- 5:26for a pair of Canadian geese to find the bowl
- 5:30in March. The female piled grasses into it, then cushioned
- 5:34it with moss and soft down feathers. She kept her
- 5:37five eggs warm in the bowl while her mates stood guard.
- 5:41When their fuzzy goslings were two days old, they led
- 5:44them to the water, and not a second too soon
- 5:47for a hungry fox came gosling hunting. He flipped the
- 5:51empty nest upside down, then hurried off in an angry huff.
- 5:57Shalen found the Thanksgiving bow as she hunted for fossils
- 6:02in April. She carried them home in it. Her friend
- 6:05Alexandra said that boat would be perfect pot from my
- 6:09plant project, so Shalen gave it to her. Alexandra filled
- 6:14it with soil, pushed in her striped seeds, and kept
- 6:19them watered in a sunny window. Happy Mothers Day Mom,
- 6:23Alexandra said. In May she helped Mom plant four sturdy
- 6:27sunflower seedlings under their black hall window. The Thanksgiving bow
- 6:34blew again over the lawn and down the road to
- 6:37Pine Tree Pond. In June, Tory squilled tadpost. She spotted
- 6:42the bow, scooped seven tadpoles into it, and took them
- 6:45to school. There, she and the other third graders watched
- 6:49them every day till they turned into full fledged frogs.
- 6:54Tory brought the frogs back to the pond in the
- 6:56yellow plastic bow and let them go. The bow found
- 7:02its way across the highway to an apartment building. Alyssa
- 7:05used it as a boat to float her doll Denise,
- 7:09and her waiting pull on a sweltering July afternoon. That evening,
- 7:14augusty thunderstorm took the bowl across the field next door,
- 7:18where it tumbled between rows of ripe red tomatoes and
- 7:22sweet green peppers. In August, the bow wound up in
- 7:26Christopher's sandbox. He and his best friend Noah used it
- 7:30as a mow to build a grand castle for their
- 7:33knights and dragons. In September, Christopher's mom wragged her yard
- 7:38and added the bow to her bin for recycling plastic.
- 7:42The bow fell off the recycling truck when mister Bacon,
- 7:45the trash collector, hit a bump. It rowed all the
- 7:48way to Tyler's backyard. Are you big enough to fill?
- 7:52The bird feeder. His grandpa asked him. Tyler still on
- 7:55tippy toes, but wasn't quite tall enough. Then he turned
- 7:59over the thanksgin Giving bow, used it as a step stool,
- 8:02and reached just right looking for food. In late October,
- 8:07a mother raccoon and her three playful kids discovered the
- 8:11yellow plastic bow and decided to investigate. They prodded it
- 8:15and pushed it around past the Rooney's farm and across
- 8:19the road. When they got hungry, they left it in
- 8:22a pile of orange leaves in front of a big
- 8:24white house. On Thanksgiving Day, Grandma Grace's family pulled into
- 8:28the driveway once again, toddler Josh he spotted something in
- 8:32the yard and ran to get it. He came back
- 8:35a second later, wearing a yellow plastic cat. He marched
- 8:39prowling into the house, declaring, I a builder my helmet mercy.
- 8:45Grandma Grace exclaimed, I've been looking all over for that.
- 8:50Wherever did you find my Thanksgiving bow? Right where we
- 8:53left it last year? Sarah answered, hmm. Grandma Grace looked puzzled,
- 8:58then she smiled and opened arms for warm tights, sweet
- 9:02smelling Thanksgiving hugs. Our next book is called The Berensteon
- 9:07Bears Thanksgiving All Around. It was published by Benstein Publishing Incorporated,
- 9:16and it has a copyright ear of twenty fourteen. The
- 9:20author is Mike Berenstein. Thanksgiving is all around, says Papa Bear.
- 9:27Look at the bright falk colors. The thall is nearly over,
- 9:31says Mama Bear. The leaves are dropping fast. I see
- 9:35turkey track, says Sister Bear. Here's a flock of wild turkeys.
- 9:40If the wild turkeys are out, says Brother Bear. Thanksgiving
- 9:44must be near. Winter will be here soon, says brother.
- 9:48The geese are all flying south. Some more turkey tracks
- 9:52led into this orchard, says sister. But no turkeys, said Brother,
- 9:57only apples. This is this farmer Ben's farm, says Papa.
- 10:02The turkey must belong here here. Turkey turkey, turkey turkey,
- 10:06calls sister. Who's a turkey, says missus Ben. I'm pilling
- 10:11corn on the cob. No turkey here, either, says farm
- 10:15or Ben. I'm stuffing a Thanksgiving scarecrow. I don't see
- 10:19turkeys in the pumpkin patch, says brother. But I do
- 10:23see mister woodchuck. Missus Ben's pumpkin pie will make a
- 10:27good dessert, says sister. Here's the farmyard, says Papa. Did
- 10:34the turkey go into the barn with the cows? Is
- 10:37mister turkey visiting friends in the chicken coop? Asks Mama.
- 10:41There are lots of eggs, but no mister turkey, says brother. Hmm,
- 10:46says brother. There are turkey feathers down by the pond
- 10:49with the duckskiese and swans. That turkey must be very close,
- 10:54says Sister. Why here's mister turkey himself, says Papa. What
- 10:59a fine proud fellow. Look at him spread his colorful tale,
- 11:04says Mama. Now we really know that Turkey Day is
- 11:07on the way, says the whole Bear family. A happy
- 11:11Thanksgiving to all. Our next book is titled How to
- 11:15Catch a Turkey and it was published by Source Books,
- 11:25which is affiliated with Scholastic Incorporated. It has a copyright
- 11:30year of twenty eighteen and it was written by Adam Wallace.
- 11:37Here we are on Thanksgiving Day. It's that special time
- 11:41of the year. Yes, I know I am a turkey.
- 11:44That much should be clear. So gather around. I have
- 11:47a tale, and it's really quite a story. What I
- 11:49tell you now is not a joke. It is my
- 11:52crowning glory. It all begin one year ago. I was
- 11:56at school. You see, play preparations were underway, but that
- 12:00didn't matter to me. Some kids walked by in silly
- 12:04clothes talking about the play. Well, even have a turkey
- 12:09on stage. It's perfect for Thanksgiving Day. Turkey stage. No way, Nohow?
- 12:15Had I really heard that right? I broke out of
- 12:18my pen and ran away with a case of bad
- 12:21stage fright. I burst into the science room, knocked over
- 12:26flask and beakers, and the cry of catch that turkey
- 12:29boomed over the loud speakers. So now more children join
- 12:34the chase with catapults and food, but their goofy mashed
- 12:38potatoes weren't enough to keep me glued up. Next, there
- 12:42was a maze of books that stretched from wall to wall.
- 12:45But with a big hop and a mighty flap, I
- 12:48managed to escape at all. I duck past chairs and
- 12:52bags and desks. Now that was quite the trick. The
- 12:55kids thought they could stop me here, but I was
- 12:58much too quick. I ran outside to the jungle gym,
- 13:02thinking I could hide, but the recess yard was all
- 13:06tricked out. I'd have better luck inside. Finally the kids
- 13:11gave up, but the principal gave Chase. My only hope
- 13:14of escaping her was keeping up my pace. I slid
- 13:19into the coach's room and crashed into a chair. I
- 13:22got tangled up in jerseys, but I won't get stuck
- 13:25in there. I ran into a curtain. There was nowhere
- 13:30else to go. I couldn't get past the principal, but
- 13:33the curtain led to the show. My heart was racing.
- 13:37I started to sweat. I couldn't squawk or run. I
- 13:40took a deep breath. I can do this. Who knows
- 13:43this might be fun? A kid stood up and pointed,
- 13:47Oh my gosh, he's so cute. He really is a
- 13:50parent agree in his little mascot suit. I started to
- 13:54smile and even dance while the crowd continued to cheer.
- 13:58I was filled with joy that I took the chance,
- 14:01and that's what started my mascot career. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
- 14:09Our next story is called Pete the Cat The First Thanksgiving,
- 14:14and it was published by Harper Festival, an imprint of
- 14:20Harper Collins Chuner's books as a copyright eyear of twenty thirteen,
- 14:25and the story was written by Kimberly and James Steen.
- 14:31Pete was nervous about being a pilgrim in his class's
- 14:34Thanksgiving play the first Thanksgiving. Just do your best, his
- 14:38best friend, Kelly said. Pete said he would try. He
- 14:42was ready. His mom had even made him a pilgrim hat,
- 14:45which was really cool. Pete took his place at the
- 14:48front of the giant ship that his class had made
- 14:51out of cardboard. Pete was a pilgrim on the Mayflower.
- 14:55In sixteen twenty, a group of Pilgrims decided to leave
- 14:58England for the New World to build a new life.
- 15:01It was a long, long trip on a big, big ship.
- 15:04All the Pilgrims sang, this sea was rough and very dangerous.
- 15:09Many pilgrims got very, very sick. The dream of a
- 15:13new start in a new world made the hard trip
- 15:16all worth it. For more than two months the Pilgrims sailed,
- 15:20they wondered if they would ever get there. After sixty
- 15:23five days on the ship, the New World finally came
- 15:25into view Land ho Pete cried. All the Pilgrims did
- 15:30a happy dance. The Pilgrims arrived in the New World
- 15:34at Plymouth Rock in what is now Massachusetts. Everyone had
- 15:38many chores to do, like growing food, finding water, and
- 15:41building shelters. The first winter in the new world was
- 15:45long and hard. In the spring, the Pilgrims had to
- 15:48decide whether to give up and go back to England
- 15:51or keep trying. The Pilgrims had heard about the Native Americans,
- 15:55and many worried that they would not be friendly. Pete
- 15:59had never met a kid he did not like, so
- 16:01he thought they would be kind. Pete was right. He
- 16:05made a new friend in Squanto. Squanto and the other
- 16:08Native Americans showed the Pilgrims how to grow crops like corn, beans,
- 16:13and squash. By summer, the Pilgrims had learned how to
- 16:16farm the new land. By fall harvest, the Pilgrims had
- 16:21plenty of food. To thank Squanta on the other Native Americans,
- 16:25the Pilgrims invited them to share the harvest. This celebration
- 16:29became known as the First Thanksgiving. Pete was relieved when
- 16:34the play was over. He had remembered all his lines. Wow,
- 16:38I never thought about how hard it was back then,
- 16:41said Pete. You did great, CALLI said. Later, at Thanksgiving
- 16:46dinner with his family, Pete said, let's all go around
- 16:49the table and say something we are thankful for. I'm
- 16:53thankful for my family, said Pete's mom. I'm thankful for
- 16:57my skateboards, said Bob. I'm thankful for the brave pilgrims
- 17:02that started this new free world, said Pete. What are
- 17:06you thankful for? Our next story is called Happy Thanksgiving Tiny,
- 17:11and it was published by Penguin Young Readers, an imprint
- 17:14of Penguin Random House. It has a copyright year of
- 17:18twenty eighteen and the author is carry Meister look Tiny
- 17:24at Thanksgiving. Play, I sing, I dance, I get a part.
- 17:31I am an ear of corn. Tiny wants apart two. Sorry, Tiny,
- 17:37there are no parts for dogs. I know Tiny is big.
- 17:42He can help. Tiny helps with the set. Oh no stop, Tiny,
- 17:48Tiny helps with the props. Oh no crash, Sorry Tiny,
- 17:53you need to stay out. I work on my lines,
- 17:57Tiny weights. Today is the show? Oh no, the turkey
- 18:03is sick? Who will be the turkey? Tiny will? The
- 18:08play is fun? Tiny is a good turkey. Happy Thanksgiving, Tiny.
- 18:15Our next book is called Just a Special Thanksgiving And
- 18:19it was published by Harper Festival, an imprint of Harper
- 18:22Collins Publishers. It has a copyright year of twenty fifteen,
- 18:27and the author of our book is Mercer Mayer. It
- 18:32was the last day of school before the Thanksgiving holiday.
- 18:35My class was making projects to take home. Tiger said,
- 18:39my turkey looked like a pumpkin. I said, Tiger's pilgrim
- 18:43looked like a fence post with scribbles. Everyone laughed. Miss
- 18:47Kitty said, time to clean up. Don't forget the school
- 18:50play tonight. The bell rang and it was time to
- 18:53go home. That evening, I got ready for the play.
- 18:56Mom helped me put on my costume. I was a turkey.
- 19:00We drove to school and I went backstage to wait.
- 19:02I looked out at the audience. There were so many critters.
- 19:06I got butterflies in my tummy. The curtain went up
- 19:09and the play began. When it was my turn to
- 19:12say something, I forgot my lines. I was just so nervous,
- 19:17so I surprised everyone insane is son instead. I think
- 19:20they liked it, because they all clapped. The play was
- 19:23finally over, and I was happy to go home. I
- 19:26was so tired I fell asleep without a story for
- 19:29the first time ever. The next morning, I got up early.
- 19:32It was the big Thanksgiving day parade. The Critter Scout
- 19:36troop and I were marching in our costumes from the play.
- 19:40After a while, I was tired. I climbed up on
- 19:43a float. I could see everything. Hi Mom, Hi Dad,
- 19:46I called. They didn't look too happy. Mister policeman helped
- 19:51me down. He took me to the Lost and Found
- 19:54and I found my mom, my dad, and little sister.
- 19:57We went home. After all that, Mom was very mad,
- 20:00Dad was too, and my little sister couldn't stop laughing.
- 20:04After dinner, we went shopping for the turkey and stuff.
- 20:08See how strong I am? I said, Oops, I dropped
- 20:11the turkey. Don't worry, Mom, I can brush it off.
- 20:15We eat Cranberry's stead. I called. I grabbed them up,
- 20:18and little sister held the bag. I missed the bag.
- 20:22I called, how about some help? Huh Dad. The next
- 20:26day we were up early. Everybody helped prepare the feast.
- 20:29Finally the turkey was ready. Dad said we were having
- 20:32a surprise dinner. We cleaned up and took the turkey
- 20:35to the car. We drove to the community center. Everyone
- 20:39from town was there. Mom told us that the town
- 20:42decided to have a big community Thanksgiving dinner. They invited
- 20:46all the critters who couldn't have a nice dinner. This
- 20:49way everyone could enjoy it together. Little sister and I
- 20:53helped serve the food. It was fun, the food was yummy. Wow,
- 20:58I said, this was a really special Thanksgiving. Our next
- 21:04story is titled Fans Nancy Our Thanksgiving Banquet, and it
- 21:08was published by Harper Festival, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers.
- 21:13It has a copyright year of twenty eleven and it
- 21:17was written by Jane O'Connor. Ooh la la. Grandma and
- 21:22Grandpa are hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year. After driving for hours,
- 21:26we have finally reached our destination. That's fancy for the
- 21:30place we want to be. Grandpa opens the door and
- 21:33gives me a giant bear hug. Well, sure, we both say.
- 21:38My grandfather and I love to speak French to each other.
- 21:42What a celebration this will be. There's a gigantic turkey,
- 21:46Grandma's secret stuffing, green beans and authentic cranberry sauce that
- 21:50didn't come out of a can. And desserts there are
- 21:54almost too many to count. This is not just a
- 21:57Thanksgiving dinner. This is way fancier. This is a Thanksgiving banquet.
- 22:05When it's time to eat, I head for the big table.
- 22:07My mom tells me to go sit at the kid's
- 22:10table again. But I'm so much more mature than Jojo
- 22:14and my cousins. I say, mature is a fancy way
- 22:19for grown up. I know, but there aren't enough chairs
- 22:22at our table. Mom says, I take the place at
- 22:25the kid's table. There are paper plates, paper napkins, and
- 22:29a paper tablecloth. The glasses are plastic. It's not nearly
- 22:34as fancy as the big table, but the food is
- 22:36simply delicious. I am careful to eat with my pinky up,
- 22:40and after each bite, I dab my lips with my napkin.
- 22:44That means I wipe my mouth very gently. Jojo is
- 22:49not using her party manners. She puts her napkin on
- 22:52her head and makes silly faces. My cousin Arthur laugh
- 22:55so hearty spits out some cranberry juice. My uncle has
- 22:59to intervene, which means he makes everyone stop acting so immature.
- 23:03Would it be all right to switch seats with you,
- 23:06he asked me, Ma Oi moe, yes, yes, I tell him,
- 23:11of course. Grandma hands me a fresh napkin with a
- 23:15pretty holder around it. You can wear it like a bracelet.
- 23:19Tree chic. You say it like this tree chic. It
- 23:23means very fancy. And the gravy has passed around in
- 23:27a special little boat. This is more like it. I
- 23:31am ready for second helping. I asked politely for the
- 23:34gravy boat. Oh no, I spill a little by accident,
- 23:39my grandma says, I just spilled some cranberry sauce. Don't
- 23:42feel bad. That's what the table coth is for. What
- 23:46a charming host, this, grandma is. I finish eating way
- 23:51before anybody else. Have you noticed how long it takes
- 23:54gramps to eat and how they only talk about stuff
- 23:57in the news. I can spell long words on my aunt,
- 24:01like dazl d a z z ellie. That's wonderful, my
- 24:06aunt says, But I can tell she is not really
- 24:09interested in spelling. Oh, Jojo, and my cousin's already starting
- 24:14on dessert. My sister's having apple pie a la mode
- 24:18that's French and fancy for with ice cream. Jojo waves
- 24:22to me and takes another bite of pie. Yummy, she says.
- 24:26Now everyone at the kids table is coloring with the
- 24:29new crowns and pass the paper Grandma bought for us.
- 24:33Not to brag, but I am a very talented artist.
- 24:36May I be excused, I asked Mom. I point to
- 24:39the kids table. I'm going to help them draw stuff.
- 24:44First I get a plate and sample the desserts. Then
- 24:47I show everyone how to make butterflies. It's easy. You
- 24:50just make a big bee together with another big bee
- 24:54that's backwards. Because it's Thanksgiving. I also teach them something
- 24:59I learned in school. You trace your hand and vla la.
- 25:03Soon you have a turkey. When we are done, we
- 25:06bring our turkeys over to the adult's table. How to
- 25:10make a paper turkey. One trace your hand, two ed feathers,
- 25:13three at eyes and a beak. Four. Then fancy it up,
- 25:17Vlala a turkey. They are wonderful, Grandma and Grandpa tells us.
- 25:23They put the turkeys in the middle of the table
- 25:25like a centerpiece. Then Grandpa stands up and says, how
- 25:29grateful that's fancy for being happy and thankful he is
- 25:33to have the whole family together. Me too, I am
- 25:37so thankful for Thanksgiving. This concludes the children's story our
- 25:43for today. Please join us next time as we will
- 25:45read more stories, fables and fairy tales. Thank you for
- 25:49listening and please stay tuned for the Lex and Harel
- 25:52leader on Radio I
