- 0:22Speaker 1: You are listening to Eagles postgame analysis here at the
- 0:25Speaker 1: Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly
- 0:28Speaker 1: sports podcast show in the world. The Philadelphia Eagles winning
- 0:32Speaker 1: the first regular season game here in 2026. They beat
- 0:37Speaker 1: the Washington Commanders by a score of 24 to 22,
- 0:40Speaker 1: came down right to the last few seconds.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Of the Eagles defense.
- 0:43Speaker 1: They were able to get it done today. Again, week
- 0:46Speaker 1: one in the books. 24-22 Eagles win. I'm Jeff Warren.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Here are my buddy Len Hunsicker. Len, man, not the
- 0:55Speaker 1: greatest football game in the world by the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Not the worst either. It's game one, right? Game one,
- 1:03Speaker 1: there were some hiccups for sure.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Yeah, and I don't know if we're going to jump
- 1:08Speaker 3: into this this early, but to me, that's my... I
- 1:11Speaker 3: guess overarching theme for today's game is, okay, you've got
- 1:16Speaker 3: a different offensive coordinator every single year. You don't play
- 1:20Speaker 3: anybody of consequence one single second in the preseason.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:25Speaker 3: What do you think it's going to look like in
- 1:26Speaker 3: the first game? I mean, that, that was like, like
- 1:30Speaker 3: my wife was asking me like, Oh, what do you think?
- 1:32Speaker 3: And I was like, I'm not mad about it because
- 1:35Speaker 3: this is what I expected. I mean, you just throw
- 1:37Speaker 3: these guys out on the field for the first time.
- 1:39Speaker 3: And I know they've been, practicing stuff in the offseason
- 1:42Speaker 3: and the preseason all that stuff but like it's not
- 1:46Speaker 3: a game situation and a game situation is a different
- 1:49Speaker 3: thing and the fact that you're not given these and
- 1:52Speaker 3: i know why i know there are multiple reasons why
- 1:54Speaker 3: but the fact that you're not getting these guys game
- 1:57Speaker 3: situations to prep for stuff like this you're you're starting
- 2:01Speaker 3: cold and i feel like the offenses are always going
- 2:03Speaker 3: to be maybe a little bit behind the defenses i
- 2:06Speaker 3: mean you can probably get away with something like that
- 2:08Speaker 3: if you've had any kind of continuity with your coordinators
- 2:11Speaker 3: at all guys that have been there for a couple
- 2:13Speaker 3: years but the eagles have never been i mean at
- 2:16Speaker 3: least offensively the eagles have never been able to say
- 2:19Speaker 3: that absolutely um so this is i i she my
- 2:24Speaker 3: my wife asked me like after the game she's like
- 2:26Speaker 3: are you happy with this? And I said, yeah, I said,
- 2:28Speaker 3: all I wanted them to do was win the game
- 2:31Speaker 3: because this is exactly what I expected it would be.
- 2:34Speaker 3: I didn't think it was going to look pretty at
- 2:35Speaker 3: all and it didn't. So just get a win in
- 2:38Speaker 3: week one. That's all I care about.
- 2:39Speaker 1: It's a great theme to start off with because, and
- 2:42Speaker 1: then to piggyback off of that, I just, I just
- 2:44Speaker 1: want to read a quick tweet from Jeff McClain because
- 2:47Speaker 1: it actually reinforces what you just said. It's incredible that you,
- 2:53Speaker 1: You have two teams that want to replicate this. an
- 2:57Speaker 1: offense in this league, both the Eagles and the commanders
- 3:00Speaker 1: showed throughout this game that they may want to run
- 3:03Speaker 1: a Shanahan and McVay type of scheme, but it's going
- 3:08Speaker 1: to take time. They're not the originators of this. It
- 3:10Speaker 1: is going to absolutely take time. And we're look, we're
- 3:13Speaker 1: going to get into some of the good. We're going
- 3:14Speaker 1: to get into some of the crap too, but Jeff McClain,
- 3:17Speaker 1: I'm the biggest Jeff McClain fan.
- 3:19Speaker 2: But he was absolutely correct.
- 3:21Speaker 1: And it just goes to what you're saying, Len, you know, you,
- 3:25Speaker 1: you're going to want to run these schemes. And if
- 3:27Speaker 1: you're not giving these guys in the preseason, the ability
- 3:30Speaker 1: to get on the field and actually work within these schemes,
- 3:32Speaker 1: you're going to have these hiccups for sure.
- 3:34Speaker 2: It's a good first theme.
- 3:36Speaker 3: And, you know, you know, talking about the McVay, you know,
- 3:39Speaker 3: you know, Shanahan schemes or whatever. And there was a
- 3:42Speaker 3: lot of points during this game for both offenses where
- 3:45Speaker 3: it felt like they were running a Patula West scheme.
- 3:48Speaker 3: That's some of the, yes. For both teams throughout the game.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Well, that's a great, Dude, folks, Len and I didn't
- 3:57Speaker 1: talk about this at all, but it is a great set.
- 3:59Speaker 1: We didn't coordinate what we were going to say prior
- 4:01Speaker 1: to hitting the record button, but it's a good segue, Len,
- 4:03Speaker 1: because the next theme, the Eagles just didn't have a
- 4:07Speaker 1: consistent run game at all. Once again, Saquon Barkley just
- 4:11Speaker 1: getting hit behind the line of scrimmage all day long,
- 4:13Speaker 1: and yet they insisted on running on third and long,
- 4:18Speaker 1: running the ball on third and long. I felt like
- 4:19Speaker 1: it was that Kevin Petullo type of offense that we've
- 4:22Speaker 1: seen recently. or whether we saw last year. And I
- 4:26Speaker 1: think to no surprise either, Washington, they had a lot
- 4:29Speaker 1: of simulated pressures on Eagles passing downs as well. Multiple
- 4:33Speaker 1: defenders standing at the line of scrimmage really appeared that
- 4:37Speaker 1: this Eagles offense was carrying the struggles that they had
- 4:41Speaker 1: last year in the rushing game to this season as well.
- 4:45Speaker 2: It seemed like almost a mirror of it.
- 4:48Speaker 1: And that's a theme I think we're going to need
- 4:50Speaker 1: to talk about this coming week.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Yeah. And if you were to ask me, what is
- 4:55Speaker 3: the biggest thing you're worried about coming out of this game?
- 4:58Speaker 3: It's that it's like outside of one big run and
- 5:01Speaker 3: he had one like maybe eight yard run late in
- 5:03Speaker 3: the game. But outside of those two runs, one one
- 5:06Speaker 3: great run, moderately good run that run game, particularly with Barkley.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Was non-existent.
- 5:14Speaker 3: And that's something that, you know, that's going to rear
- 5:19Speaker 3: its ugly head in some losses down the road if
- 5:22Speaker 3: they don't get that fixed.
- 5:24Speaker 1: And there's a reason why the rushing, yeah, the reason
- 5:26Speaker 1: why the rushing attack, not all great. You have two
- 5:29Speaker 1: gentlemen in Cam Juergens and Landon Dickerson who look like
- 5:32Speaker 1: they were playing rookie football for the very first time
- 5:34Speaker 1: on the line of scrimmage.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought Dickerson, especially, I mean, Juergens had a
- 5:39Speaker 3: bad penalty, but there was a couple of.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Plays where Dickerson looked like just bad out there.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Like a turnstile.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Yeah. Uh, that I'm glad you brought that up.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Cause particularly with Dickerson, I definitely noticed that, um, didn't
- 5:52Speaker 3: look good at all. I mean, I don't think the
- 5:53Speaker 3: Eagles offensive line, you know, with regard to the run game,
- 5:57Speaker 3: particularly look good as a whole, but, uh, particularly those
- 6:01Speaker 3: two and particularly Dickerson, I, it, I wasn't impressed at all.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. Even Lane Johnson struggled a bit today too.
- 6:08Speaker 2: You don't see it.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Yes.
- 6:09Speaker 2: He's getting older, but.
- 6:10Speaker 3: That's, that's a, that's a big concern to me for
- 6:13Speaker 3: the Eagles this year, you know, cause they, you always
- 6:17Speaker 3: have guys getting hurt. Lane Johnson feels like he gets
- 6:19Speaker 3: hurt every year for a couple of games now. And
- 6:21Speaker 3: that is just a rough and tumble position. And everybody's
- 6:25Speaker 3: getting older and maybe this offensive line is starting to
- 6:29Speaker 3: show its age. starting to show it's wear and tear.
- 6:33Speaker 3: And I don't know if we're ever going to get
- 6:34Speaker 3: that dominant offensive line of a couple of years ago back. Yeah. I,
- 6:39Speaker 3: I think the best days of this offensive line are
- 6:43Speaker 3: pretty far in the rear view mirror. And, and I,
- 6:45Speaker 3: you know, nobody likes to draft offensive linemen. It's, it's
- 6:48Speaker 3: the least sexy thing I think you can do.
- 6:51Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:51Speaker 3: But it may be time to renew that, that emphasis
- 6:57Speaker 3: on rebuilding the offensive line because it, it's just time for,
- 7:01Speaker 3: for a few of these guys.
- 7:03Speaker 1: But going back to what you were just saying, these
- 7:04Speaker 1: guys weren't playing during the preseason or, you know what
- 7:06Speaker 1: I mean?
- 7:07Speaker 2: Lane Johnson was playing. This is his first game of
- 7:09Speaker 2: the year.
- 7:09Speaker 3: First time on the field.
- 7:11Speaker 2: So it's like, okay, does he just need to get
- 7:13Speaker 2: back in a rhythm? Yeah, exactly.
- 7:15Speaker 3: It does.
- 7:15Speaker 2: He need to get back.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Hopefully it's that. I mean, I really hope to God
- 7:19Speaker 3: it's sad because if it's the alternative, then that's a
- 7:22Speaker 3: longer term problem that you can't, walk back from.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Exactly I hope I hope for for their sake it's
- 7:28Speaker 4: what you just mentioned and not what I'm thinking and it.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Makes me not want to blame Saquon Barkley because he
- 7:33Speaker 1: did have 15 carries for 83 yards 5.5 yards per
- 7:36Speaker 1: carry he did have a long of 42 yards but
- 7:40Speaker 1: it makes me think that we're seeing that same thing
- 7:41Speaker 1: like I said it's kind of we're kind of looking
- 7:43Speaker 1: in the mirror with regard to last year with this
- 7:44Speaker 1: Eagles offense specifically the rushing attack I'm not blaming really
- 7:48Speaker 1: Saquon Barkley I mean when the holes were there for
- 7:50Speaker 1: him and he was doing what he needed to do.
- 7:54Speaker 3: You could create, you know, just give the DNA of
- 7:58Speaker 3: all the greatest running backs of all time and put
- 8:00Speaker 3: it into one running back. And if he doesn't have
- 8:02Speaker 3: a good offensive line in front of him, none of
- 8:04Speaker 3: it's going to matter. So, you know, I mean, what
- 8:07Speaker 3: can you do?
- 8:08Speaker 2: Absolutely. All right.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Look, another thing I wanted to do going into this game,
- 8:12Speaker 1: and I only have some of the stats for the
- 8:13Speaker 1: first half here, so I don't know what the rest of.
- 8:15Speaker 2: The game looked like.
- 8:17Speaker 1: We were all so excited to see what the Sean
- 8:19Speaker 1: Mannion offense was going to be. a lot more plays
- 8:22Speaker 1: under center. At least we thought, you know, and, and yes,
- 8:25Speaker 1: it did happen, but I did see Jalen hurts in
- 8:28Speaker 1: shotgun a lot.
- 8:30Speaker 2: And especially more than I thought I would.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Yeah. Look for sure.
- 8:34Speaker 1: First half, he was under center 32% of the time.
- 8:37Speaker 1: That was nine plays motion plays. Absolutely loved in the
- 8:40Speaker 1: first half, 71%. There were 20 motion plays. They played
- 8:44Speaker 1: 11 personnel on 20 plays, 12 personnel on seven plays,
- 8:47Speaker 1: 13 personnel on seven.
- 8:50Speaker 2: One play.
- 8:52Speaker 1: And I look, I was hoping to see a lot
- 8:55Speaker 1: more under center type of plays because we know we've
- 8:57Speaker 1: seen success with this offensive personnel when Jalen hurts is
- 9:01Speaker 1: under center. And I think they got away from that
- 9:03Speaker 1: in the second half as well. And that was a
- 9:05Speaker 1: bit disappointing too. And look, the team won here, the
- 9:08Speaker 1: team won. And I know we're kind of crapping on
- 9:10Speaker 1: them out of the gate. We're going to get to
- 9:11Speaker 1: some positive stuff here in a bit, but I was
- 9:13Speaker 1: hoping to see more under center plays here, Len.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Yeah. Do you, I mean, do you think that's cause
- 9:19Speaker 3: you know, There's been the whispers in the past of,
- 9:22Speaker 3: you know, Hertz, you know, falling back on what he's
- 9:26Speaker 3: more comfortable with, which is not working under center. Is
- 9:29Speaker 3: that a thing where maybe, you know. They're just like, OK,
- 9:32Speaker 3: we're struggling. Let's let Jalen do what he wants to do.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Do you think that was a conversation that was had?
- 9:38Speaker 2: Could have been. Yeah, it could have been.
- 9:39Speaker 1: It could have been a comfort zone thing because it's
- 9:41Speaker 1: the first game of the season. We want to make
- 9:44Speaker 1: sure that he is feeling good out there, of course.
- 9:47Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, the rushing attack
- 9:50Speaker 1: still struggled when they were running from shotgun.
- 9:53Speaker 3: It really did.
- 9:53Speaker 4: Yeah, it kind of didn't matter what they did.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Yeah. And look, I think it's important for us to
- 9:58Speaker 1: also talk about the good on the offense. as well,
- 10:00Speaker 1: because I got to tell you, Jalen Hurts, 14 to 25,
- 10:04Speaker 1: 203 yards, the average 8.1 yards per attempt, three touchdowns
- 10:09Speaker 1: that he threw in this game. And he ended with
- 10:11Speaker 1: a rating of 122.2. Jalen Hurts was a solid quarterback
- 10:13Speaker 1: in this game. at the end of the day and
- 10:19Speaker 1: his legs as well. You take a look at what
- 10:21Speaker 1: his rushes.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Yes.
- 10:23Speaker 1: I mean, seven carries for 46 yards. He averaged 6.6
- 10:26Speaker 1: yards per carry. It was the Jalen hurts that I
- 10:28Speaker 1: think we wanted to see last year. Len, we saw
- 10:31Speaker 1: it here in week one.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, not gaudy rushing total totals by any
- 10:36Speaker 3: stretch of the imagination, but when you needed him, when
- 10:39Speaker 3: the play was breaking down and he couldn't find anybody
- 10:42Speaker 3: open when he needed to go out and get those yards,
- 10:45Speaker 3: he did it. And, and that, you know, That's all
- 10:48Speaker 3: I'm asking for out of a running quarterback. I don't
- 10:53Speaker 3: need you to be the focal point of the offense
- 10:55Speaker 3: with your running. I just need you to, when it's
- 10:58Speaker 3: there and you've got the ability, take it.
- 11:01Speaker 4: And that's what he did today. I'm really glad to
- 11:03Speaker 4: see that.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Moving over to the other side of the ball, Len,
- 11:05Speaker 1: I think the defense did a pretty damn good job
- 11:09Speaker 1: from an overall perspective today.
- 11:11Speaker 2: They kept this team in the game all four quarters,
- 11:16Speaker 2: for sure.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Zach Bond, just an incredible, incredible linebacker and incredibly underrated
- 11:22Speaker 1: in this league. I will say as well, Cooper Dejean
- 11:26Speaker 1: was getting cooked all day on a bunch of different plays.
- 11:30Speaker 1: mainly on slants by the commanders, wide receivers. And it
- 11:34Speaker 1: was really bizarre to see just him getting turned around
- 11:37Speaker 1: a lot.
- 11:37Speaker 2: He was looking slow. He didn't look like himself.
- 11:40Speaker 1: And there was a play, I think it might have
- 11:41Speaker 1: been in the first quarter, could have been in the
- 11:42Speaker 1: second quarter, where he came up wincing as though his
- 11:45Speaker 1: ribs were hurting. I think Cooper Dujun may have some
- 11:47Speaker 1: sort of issue like internally. And I hope it's not
- 11:51Speaker 1: an injury that's going to last a long time. But
- 11:53Speaker 1: I think that may have been the reason why we
- 11:55Speaker 1: didn't see the Cooper Dujun that we are so used
- 11:57Speaker 1: to seeing.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Maybe. I mean, I remember during the preseason seeing, like,
- 12:02Speaker 3: you know, things on, you know, Instagram or whatever of, like,
- 12:05Speaker 3: you know, when they had the joint practices with the
- 12:08Speaker 3: Patriots where it was, like, Cooper to Gene, like, multiple, like,
- 12:12Speaker 3: plays during.
- 12:12Speaker 4: That practice of him getting burned.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. Like, so, I mean, I feel like that
- 12:17Speaker 3: was something that was happening in preseason, too. So I
- 12:19Speaker 3: don't fully know what's happening there. But, you know, I
- 12:23Speaker 3: think overall... defensively, they were good. They got tired at
- 12:27Speaker 3: the end. You could definitely tell they were getting worn
- 12:29Speaker 3: down and that bears it out in the, you know,
- 12:31Speaker 3: not ready, not that we're ready to jump into the
- 12:34Speaker 3: stats yet, but you look at time of possession, Washington
- 12:37Speaker 3: had it for like 33 minutes and 20 seconds. And
- 12:40Speaker 3: the Eagles had it for like 26 minutes. So, I mean, they,
- 12:43Speaker 3: you know, I guess as the game wore on, they,
- 12:47Speaker 3: you know, they kind of wore them down a little bit.
- 12:48Speaker 3: But the majority of that game, the Eagles defense held
- 12:52Speaker 3: Washington in check. And really, to me, is the reason
- 12:54Speaker 3: that they came away with a win.
- 12:56Speaker 1: I'm glad you mentioned some of the team stats. So
- 12:58Speaker 1: before we go to break, do you have any other
- 13:00Speaker 1: themes that you wanted to dive into here? Any other themes,
- 13:03Speaker 1: you know, before we get to just a few notable
- 13:05Speaker 1: team stats and then before we grade by unit?
- 13:10Speaker 3: I don't know if it's a theme per se, but
- 13:12Speaker 3: I just like it felt like every time they ran
- 13:15Speaker 3: a screen to the flat today, it got blown up.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Like that play did not work.
- 13:21Speaker 3: So one single time that I remember they and yeah,
- 13:25Speaker 3: so I don't know if that's just. something they got
- 13:27Speaker 3: to iron out or whatever, but that, uh, boy, that
- 13:30Speaker 3: was not there at all today.
- 13:31Speaker 2: I'm glad you mentioned it.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Cause I shot off a tweet from our PST account
- 13:35Speaker 1: on Twitter. And I was like the, why the receivers
- 13:38Speaker 1: in general? And I'm talking Dallas Goddard as well. The
- 13:40Speaker 1: receivers were, we're not blocking on those screens well at all.
- 13:45Speaker 4: They were terrible.
- 13:45Speaker 3: The one that, um, I thought, uh, and I'll say
- 13:48Speaker 3: it real quick. I thought Don Tavian Wicks had a
- 13:50Speaker 3: really good game, but there was one where like towards
- 13:52Speaker 3: the beginning of the game where they did a screen
- 13:54Speaker 3: to Makai and he just did the best matador impression
- 13:57Speaker 3: I've ever seen in my life.
- 13:58Speaker 4: And that guy just flattened lemon. And I was like,
- 14:01Speaker 4: Oh God, that's terrible.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Wide receivers, tight ends absolutely need to work on some
- 14:07Speaker 1: pass blocking for sure.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Especially if they're going to be running these screens.
- 14:11Speaker 1: But, uh, Just real quick, in terms of some notable
- 14:13Speaker 1: team stats, you know, mentioning.
- 14:15Speaker 2: I'm sorry, did you, oh my God, you just said
- 14:17Speaker 2: it about two minutes ago. Did you mention the time
- 14:19Speaker 2: of possession?
- 14:21Speaker 3: I did, yeah, 33-20 to Washington to 26-40 for the Eagles.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Yes, and as we always know, yards per play, whoever
- 14:28Speaker 1: wins yards per play is usually the winner of the game.
- 14:31Speaker 1: The Eagles, six yards per play to Washington's 4.4 yards
- 14:35Speaker 1: per play.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Per play. The Eagles on third.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Down efficiency, Len, six of 14, Washington five of 15,
- 14:43Speaker 1: both teams, not the greatest in terms of their third
- 14:45Speaker 1: down efficiency here, but are there any other team stats
- 14:50Speaker 1: here that are sticking out to you?
- 14:52Speaker 3: I thought it was a relatively, I mean, turnover wise,
- 14:56Speaker 3: completely clean game by both teams. Not really. I feel
- 15:01Speaker 3: like And overabundance of penalties, six for 45 yards for Washington,
- 15:06Speaker 3: five for 40 yards for for the for the Eagles.
- 15:10Speaker 4: Yep.
- 15:10Speaker 3: The only big one that kind of jumps out at
- 15:12Speaker 3: me is the is the commanders doubling up on the
- 15:15Speaker 3: Eagles when it comes to first downs.
- 15:17Speaker 4: I thought that was.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Kind of interesting, but thankfully it didn't bear itself out
- 15:21Speaker 3: in the final result.
- 15:22Speaker 1: All right, very good. All right, folks, we're going to
- 15:24Speaker 1: take a quick break. When we get back, we're going
- 15:26Speaker 1: to grade by unit on the offense, the defense. We're
- 15:29Speaker 1: going to grade the coaching, and then we're going to
- 15:31Speaker 1: do our MVP of the game and then our least
- 15:36Speaker 1: valuable player as well, or as I like to call it,
- 15:38Speaker 1: the doo-doo butter award.
- 15:39Speaker 2: So we're going to take a break. We'll be back
- 15:42Speaker 2: in just a bit. All right.
- 15:45Speaker 1: We are back and let's get into grading by units.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Let's start with the quarterback position. Len, I already went
- 15:52Speaker 1: through Jalen Hurts' stats. I'm going to give him an
- 15:55Speaker 1: A this week. I think he did everything he needed
- 15:57Speaker 1: to do. And at the end of the day, he
- 15:59Speaker 1: ends up throwing three touchdown passes. I'm happy with Jalen
- 16:02Speaker 1: Hurts today.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm happy with him, too. My grade, I don't
- 16:07Speaker 3: think is going to be as high as yours because
- 16:08Speaker 3: I like to reserve the a for like, or truly
- 16:12Speaker 3: outstanding game. Um, I'm going to go B plus could
- 16:17Speaker 3: be talked up to an a minus, but, um, I
- 16:19Speaker 3: thought he was, he was very solid. If I'm, you know,
- 16:22Speaker 3: you're talking about the MVP award.
- 16:24Speaker 4: For the game.
- 16:25Speaker 3: I have a top three and Hertz is number three
- 16:28Speaker 3: for the Eagles for me. Oh, okay.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Oh, you want to do top three? Okay. Sounds good.
- 16:31Speaker 3: I mean, we don't have to, I just, I have
- 16:33Speaker 3: three in my head and he's who I would put
- 16:36Speaker 3: at number three.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Sounds good.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Um, All right, the running back, Saquon Barkley, as I
- 16:41Speaker 1: mentioned earlier, 83 yards, 5.5.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Yards per carry. I mentioned Jalen Hurts' stats before.
- 16:47Speaker 1: He averaged 6.6 yards per carry on seven carries. Will
- 16:51Speaker 1: Shipley carried the ball twice for four yards and so
- 16:56Speaker 1: disappointed that Tank Bigsby only got one carry in this
- 16:59Speaker 1: game for three yards. After what we saw from him
- 17:02Speaker 1: last year where he'd get five, seven, eight yards per carry,
- 17:06Speaker 1: The fact that they didn't use him more is absolutely
- 17:09Speaker 1: absurd in my opinion, but I'm going to give the
- 17:11Speaker 1: running backs in general a B minus this week.
- 17:14Speaker 2: What do you give them?
- 17:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I could not agree more with that sentiment, especially
- 17:19Speaker 3: if for whatever reason Saquon isn't getting going and maybe
- 17:23Speaker 3: you want to do a change of pace. Maybe you
- 17:25Speaker 3: want to just try something a little bit different. Maybe
- 17:27Speaker 3: you just want to give Barkley a break for a
- 17:29Speaker 3: series or whatever.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Bigsby has shown that he's able to, to carry that
- 17:34Speaker 3: load in short, Bursts, so why don't you use them? Absolutely.
- 17:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I 1 million percent agree with that.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 17:43Speaker 3: I will go– B minus. I mean, again, yeah, like
- 17:47Speaker 3: you said, the game wasn't necessarily the running back's fault, but,
- 17:50Speaker 3: you know, it's not like they did anything to make
- 17:53Speaker 3: me say, oh, great, great game by them.
- 17:55Speaker 4: So B minus sounds fair.
- 17:57Speaker 2: All right. Let's move to the receivers.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Dallas Goddard led the day with 77 yards on four catches,
- 18:05Speaker 1: two touchdowns, Dontavian Wicks. Also had a touchdown, 73 total
- 18:09Speaker 1: yards on two catches. Devontae Smith was targeted six times
- 18:13Speaker 1: in this game, came down with three balls for 53 yards.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Not going to get into the rest.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Well, I should actually get into Makai Lemon, the poor
- 18:20Speaker 1: freaking rookie. Four targets in this game, three receptions for
- 18:24Speaker 1: minus five yards.
- 18:26Speaker 2: My goodness. Oh, my gosh. Rough times for the rookie here.
- 18:29Speaker 3: The definition of not putting your people in position to succeed.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 18:33Speaker 4: Is that stat line right there?
- 18:35Speaker 2: Absolutely. Receivers this week, I'm going to give them a
- 18:39Speaker 2: B plus. What do you give them, Len?
- 18:43Speaker 3: I'm going to go B minus there too. I don't
- 18:47Speaker 3: know if they wanted to get Smith more involved. I
- 18:49Speaker 3: would hope that they would because he's quite clearly your
- 18:52Speaker 3: number one receiver to me now that A.J.
- 18:54Speaker 4: Brown is gone.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Outside of the The blocking snafu that we talked about earlier,
- 18:59Speaker 3: I thought Wicks had a decent game. I loved him.
- 19:02Speaker 4: So I'd like to see more of him as well.
- 19:04Speaker 3: And then Goddard was just that safety valve for Hurts
- 19:07Speaker 3: pretty much the whole game. So I thought they did well.
- 19:11Speaker 3: But again, I'm not floored by anything that I saw. So.
- 19:14Speaker 3: B minus sounds fair to me.
- 19:15Speaker 1: I gave Jalen Hurts an A, given the wide receivers
- 19:18Speaker 1: a B plus. But you know what we really didn't
- 19:20Speaker 1: see were those throws over the middle that we have
- 19:22Speaker 1: been talking about throughout this preseason and training camp that
- 19:25Speaker 1: we thought we were going to see hardly anything over
- 19:27Speaker 1: the middle, Len. Oh, it drives me crazy. Again, I've
- 19:31Speaker 1: said it so many times on the show. I just
- 19:33Speaker 1: want to see some mesh concepts here and there.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Yeah. Because I know it'll work. It's amazing.
- 19:38Speaker 3: And if it was over the middle, it was Goddard.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 19:41Speaker 4: But, yeah, as far as the receivers, no, nothing.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Well, we're going to give– I'm going to, I'm just
- 19:47Speaker 1: going to say big doo-doo butter award to the, to
- 19:50Speaker 1: the offensive line in general here, because I'm so.
- 19:52Speaker 3: All of them, huh?
- 19:54Speaker 1: Well, I'm just going to say that I'm just saying
- 19:56Speaker 1: that right now, because I'm going to be giving them
- 19:57Speaker 1: a D in this game. I really think that they
- 20:00Speaker 1: were not very good in the run game in terms
- 20:04Speaker 1: of run blocking in terms of pass blocking and pass pro.
- 20:07Speaker 2: I don't think they were really good. I'm giving them
- 20:08Speaker 2: a D this week. What do you give them?
- 20:12Speaker 3: I think that's fair. I'm going to go D plus.
- 20:14Speaker 3: I think they gave Hertz a decent amount of time.
- 20:18Speaker 3: So in the past game, I thought they were okay.
- 20:21Speaker 3: But yeah, the running game was just abysmal. And hopefully it's,
- 20:24Speaker 3: it's kind of what you said in terms of, you know,
- 20:28Speaker 3: maybe they're just shaking off the rust. Maybe this isn't
- 20:31Speaker 3: a deeper long-term problem.
- 20:33Speaker 4: And I hope to God that you're right.
- 20:35Speaker 3: But yeah, this, this was a, Very poor effort off
- 20:39Speaker 3: the bat for the run game, for the run blocking.
- 20:41Speaker 4: So, yeah, D plus. And I think that's generous.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Better be the only D's that they get all season,
- 20:46Speaker 1: because if we're giving them a lot of D's this season,
- 20:49Speaker 1: it's going to be a long year, going to be
- 20:51Speaker 1: a very long year for sure. Let's move over the
- 20:53Speaker 1: other side of the ball and the defense defensive line.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I'm going to give the defensive line this week an
- 20:58Speaker 1: A minus. You know, what do you what do you
- 21:00Speaker 1: think there? Because like at the end of the day, Len,
- 21:02Speaker 1: There was only there was what one sack, two tackles
- 21:05Speaker 1: for a loss. There were only two quarterback hits, but
- 21:08Speaker 1: there was a lot of pressure on Jaden Daniels. And
- 21:11Speaker 1: they're mainly only rushing for. Yes, there were some blitzing
- 21:14Speaker 1: schemes that were incorporated into the game throughout all four quarters.
- 21:18Speaker 1: But I'm going to give him an A minus. What
- 21:20Speaker 1: do you give the defensive line this week?
- 21:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought, you know, again, the numbers aren't necessarily there,
- 21:27Speaker 3: but I do think that they played well.
- 21:29Speaker 4: I think A- is a fair grade.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Really, it's going to be hard to dock any unit
- 21:35Speaker 3: on this defense because I thought they played very strong,
- 21:38Speaker 3: you know, held the– held the commanders to nine points
- 21:41Speaker 3: through three quarters before they kind of started to fall
- 21:44Speaker 3: off a little bit there at the end. But I
- 21:46Speaker 3: thought defensively, I think every unit was solid. And yeah,
- 21:51Speaker 3: the defensive line is certainly part of that with an
- 21:53Speaker 3: A minus. All right.
- 21:54Speaker 1: The linebacker, Zach Bond, Jihad Campbell, Jeremiah Trotter, get involved, too,
- 21:58Speaker 1: where he had two tackles on the day. But with
- 22:00Speaker 1: Jihad Campbell, he was the one individual who sacked Jaden Daniels.
- 22:04Speaker 1: And Zach Bond, as I mentioned earlier before the break,
- 22:07Speaker 1: my gosh, what a game he had coming up huge
- 22:10Speaker 1: in so many stops. He's tipping balls as well, just
- 22:14Speaker 1: making some incredible, incredible tackles. I'm going to give this
- 22:18Speaker 1: crew an A right off the bat here. I mean,
- 22:22Speaker 1: the linebacker core is so strong here. Even after losing
- 22:25Speaker 1: to Kobe Dean in the offseason, A for me.
- 22:27Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 22:29Speaker 3: Yeah, Campbell had one play late in the game where
- 22:33Speaker 3: he missed a coverage where he let a guy get
- 22:35Speaker 3: behind him. But really, that's the only negative you can
- 22:40Speaker 3: point to the entire game for the linebackers for me.
- 22:42Speaker 3: I think this was the strongest unit, and I will
- 22:46Speaker 3: say I agree with your A grade there. I think–
- 22:48Speaker 3: I mean, Campbell was good. Vaughn was spectacular. Yeah, no
- 22:54Speaker 3: complaints at all. They do that every game. Going to
- 22:58Speaker 3: be hard to complain about that unit all this year.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Secondary, I'm giving him a C +. I'm giving him
- 23:04Speaker 1: this grade, Len. Jaden Daniels only had 164 yards passing.
- 23:08Speaker 1: He averaged 4.8 yards per attempt here, which is saying
- 23:14Speaker 1: something with regard to keeping these receivers, Antonio Williams, Stephon Diggs,
- 23:19Speaker 1: Terry McLaurin, keeping them honest really throughout the game. But
- 23:23Speaker 1: then there were some spots where they just didn't come
- 23:25Speaker 1: up big. We talked about Cooper Dajin. He just didn't
- 23:27Speaker 1: look like himself. Quinion Mitchell here and there at times.
- 23:31Speaker 1: being a little bit out of position as well. Reek Wolin,
- 23:34Speaker 1: you know, getting his feet wet here as an Eagles
- 23:37Speaker 1: cornerback in this Vic Fangio scheme. I'm going to go
- 23:40Speaker 1: C-plus just because, yes, and even though Stephon Diggs, he
- 23:43Speaker 1: had nine targets, came down with four receptions for 55
- 23:48Speaker 1: yards and a touchdown. Antonio Williams at the end of
- 23:50Speaker 1: the game with his touchdown as well. I think there
- 23:53Speaker 1: were times when the secondary defense seemed a little bit
- 23:56Speaker 1: lost at times out there at times, not all the
- 23:59Speaker 1: time at times.
- 24:00Speaker 2: That's why I'm giving them a C plus. What do
- 24:01Speaker 2: you give them?
- 24:04Speaker 3: I'm going to go B minus. I think that, I
- 24:08Speaker 3: think that they were, yeah. Did the gene have a
- 24:10Speaker 3: great game? No, not by any stretch of the imagination,
- 24:13Speaker 3: but I thought that, you know, woolen was decent. I
- 24:16Speaker 3: thought that when you on was decent, you know, you
- 24:18Speaker 3: held their best wide receiver, Terry McLaurin to no catches
- 24:23Speaker 3: until basically the end of the game. Yeah.
- 24:26Speaker 4: So I thought they did a good job there.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Diggs got his and thankfully he made that stupid penalty
- 24:31Speaker 3: that kept them from, you know, being able to go
- 24:33Speaker 3: for two earlier in the game. But by and large,
- 24:37Speaker 3: I think they did a decent job. You know, I
- 24:39Speaker 3: would have loved to have seen them get a takeaway, but.
- 24:42Speaker 3: You know, that's not always going to be there. I
- 24:44Speaker 3: thought they did all right. I thought they were not
- 24:47Speaker 3: not horrible by any stretch of the imagination. So B
- 24:50Speaker 3: minus sounds about fair.
- 24:52Speaker 2: All right. Sounds good.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Let's get into our grades when it comes to special
- 24:55Speaker 1: teams than the offensive coaching, defensive.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Coaching, special teams.
- 24:58Speaker 1: I'm going to give an A this week because Braden
- 25:02Speaker 1: Mann was punting like a madman today. Holy freaking crap.
- 25:06Speaker 1: I just I you know, I don't know if he's
- 25:08Speaker 1: getting better as the years go on. When you look
- 25:11Speaker 1: at his punting, he averaged 51.6 yards per punt. But, man,
- 25:15Speaker 1: there were a few punts that were like inside the
- 25:17Speaker 1: 10-yard line. And his long on the day was 64 yards.
- 25:22Speaker 1: I mean, Braden Mann doing a damn good job. And
- 25:24Speaker 1: we also got to mention Darius Cooper. I mean, he
- 25:27Speaker 1: was a beast on special teams, especially in the first half.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Just his tackling was fantastic. He was a beast. I'm
- 25:34Speaker 2: giving him an A. What do you give special teams?
- 25:37Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm going to agree with you on that, A.
- 25:39Speaker 3: I talked about my– ranking my MVPs for this game.
- 25:44Speaker 4: Second place, Braden Mann. Oh, nice.
- 25:46Speaker 3: I thought he was spectacular.
- 25:49Speaker 4: In this game.
- 25:49Speaker 3: And normally, you know, if you're given– If you're giving
- 25:53Speaker 3: props to a punter, it probably didn't turn out too
- 25:55Speaker 3: well for your team. But I thought he really helped
- 25:59Speaker 3: them out in terms of field position during the course
- 26:01Speaker 3: of the day. And then also that blocked field goal,
- 26:05Speaker 3: blocked extra point attempt by Jalen Carter. So, yeah, special
- 26:10Speaker 3: teams gets an A from me. I thought they were
- 26:13Speaker 3: really good today.
- 26:14Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Jake Elliott making all of his extra points. And then
- 26:17Speaker 1: he had the 35 yarder that he made as well.
- 26:20Speaker 1: So it was good to see him making field goals. So, yeah,
- 26:25Speaker 1: excuse me, geez, let's get over the defensive side of
- 26:27Speaker 1: the ball. Vic Fangio here. I'm going to give Vic
- 26:29Speaker 1: Fangio this week, a B plus, um, I don't know. I,
- 26:34Speaker 1: you know, he, he's Vic Fangio and yes, they got
- 26:37Speaker 1: to get these guys. They got to get these guys
- 26:39Speaker 1: into a rhythm for sure. He's got to do that
- 26:42Speaker 1: as the defensive coordinator. I think he called a pretty
- 26:44Speaker 1: damn good game. I'm giving him a B plus. What
- 26:46Speaker 1: do you give him?
- 26:47Speaker 3: Yeah. It's kind of one of those things where, you know,
- 26:51Speaker 3: you're just like maybe kind of expect it. So you
- 26:54Speaker 3: got to maybe ask the question, like, are we maybe
- 26:57Speaker 3: starting to take him for granted a little bit, but yeah,
- 26:59Speaker 3: it was a, It was a reliable Vic Fangio game
- 27:02Speaker 3: that you can depend on and that I think we've
- 27:06Speaker 3: come to expect out of him. So I'm going to
- 27:08Speaker 3: say B +. I mean, I think they were really
- 27:11Speaker 3: strong today. And, you know, yeah, it's a credit to
- 27:15Speaker 3: him that we're kind of just assuming this is going
- 27:17Speaker 3: to happen.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Absolutely. Sean Mannion.
- 27:20Speaker 1: And, uh, and, uh, Nick Sirianni, you didn't hear Nick
- 27:22Speaker 1: Sirianni's name like too much. You really didn't see him
- 27:24Speaker 1: too much. It was more just all about Sean Mannion
- 27:26Speaker 1: and his style of offense, what it was doing on
- 27:28Speaker 1: the field, what it wasn't doing on the field, but
- 27:31Speaker 1: Sean Mannion and Nick Sirianni, I'm going to give them
- 27:34Speaker 1: a B minus this week. I mean, yes, after the
- 27:37Speaker 1: trials and tribulations that we talked about earlier with the
- 27:39Speaker 1: offensive line, the run game, really not getting there at
- 27:42Speaker 1: the end of the day, they ended up putting 24
- 27:44Speaker 1: points on the board at home and home opener. Um,
- 27:49Speaker 1: not bad by any stretch of the imagination but i
- 27:51Speaker 1: think b minus may be fair i don't know what
- 27:52Speaker 1: are you thinking.
- 27:54Speaker 3: I'm gonna go slightly lower there i'm gonna say c
- 27:57Speaker 3: plus okay um i just you know and and again
- 28:01Speaker 3: not that i think oh the sky's falling or these
- 28:04Speaker 3: guys suck or anything like that but again going back
- 28:07Speaker 3: to what i said um it's your it's your your
- 28:10Speaker 3: first game with any kind of you know, game speed
- 28:14Speaker 3: and pressure and expectations. And you're just throwing guys out
- 28:17Speaker 3: there and this is what's going to happen. So this,
- 28:22Speaker 3: this C plus that I'm going to give them now,
- 28:24Speaker 3: I don't think it's as meaningful as a grade as
- 28:27Speaker 3: it's going to be four weeks from now when they've
- 28:29Speaker 3: actually got some time to play together. I feel like
- 28:32Speaker 3: that grade will mean more in a couple of weeks
- 28:34Speaker 3: when they've had some time to gel. At this point, I,
- 28:38Speaker 3: I don't, I'm not giving them a good grade, but I.
- 28:40Speaker 4: Don't know that it's, you know, I don't know.
- 28:44Speaker 3: It just feels incomplete thus far because it's all just
- 28:47Speaker 3: so new. Gotcha.
- 28:48Speaker 4: All right.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Well, let's get into the quote new segment, which is
- 28:53Speaker 1: MVP and least valuable player, the LVP and doo-doo butter award.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Let's let's end on the positive note with the MVP. OK,
- 29:02Speaker 1: let's do the doo-doo butter award. The least valuable player
- 29:06Speaker 1: on the team. Who is that for you, buddy?
- 29:09Speaker 4: We talked about Dickerson earlier. I, he's mine too.
- 29:12Speaker 2: He's mine too.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Yep.
- 29:13Speaker 4: Yeah. I, and I have a feeling we're going to
- 29:15Speaker 4: have the same MVP as well.
- 29:17Speaker 1: I don't know if we will. I don't know if
- 29:18Speaker 1: we will. We may have somebody different and that's okay.
- 29:21Speaker 1: And that's okay.
- 29:22Speaker 3: Oh yeah. It's totally fine.
- 29:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:24Speaker 3: In fact, it's, it's better than that. We, you know,
- 29:27Speaker 3: aren't always agreeing on stuff. Yeah. I just, yeah. Dickerson
- 29:32Speaker 3: kind of stood out. Not that anybody was atrocious, but
- 29:36Speaker 3: he was, It just felt like the worst player on
- 29:38Speaker 3: the field for me.
- 29:39Speaker 4: Today for the Eagles. All right.
- 29:41Speaker 3: MVP.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Who is that for you?
- 29:43Speaker 3: Zach Bond.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Um, that's mine too.
- 29:45Speaker 3: Yes.
- 29:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:46Speaker 3: No, yeah.
- 29:48Speaker 4: Yeah. I, I, I would have been shocked if you
- 29:50Speaker 4: picked anybody else.
- 29:51Speaker 3: I just thought he was, you just heard his name
- 29:55Speaker 3: all game long, just seemingly everywhere.
- 29:58Speaker 4: Um, Yeah. I mean, he's he's freaking great.
- 30:02Speaker 3: He really is.
- 30:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Probably the most underrated linebacker in the NFL.
- 30:07Speaker 2: For sure.
- 30:08Speaker 3: I mean, obviously we're biased, but I think that's actually
- 30:11Speaker 3: a pretty fair statement.
- 30:12Speaker 4: Yep.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 30:13Speaker 1: I was thinking about going with Jalen Hurts and I
- 30:15Speaker 1: know he's the quarterback, but the reason I was thinking
- 30:17Speaker 1: about going with Hurts inevitably didn't. But.
- 30:19Speaker 2: It was because of the three touchdown passes. I am
- 30:22Speaker 2: so freaking tired of the narrative. Oh, you can't throw this.
- 30:25Speaker 2: You can't throw this.
- 30:26Speaker 3: All he does is run it in from one yard out. Exactly.
- 30:29Speaker 2: All that crap. And it's like, shut up out there.
- 30:32Speaker 1: So I was thinking about doing it, but I really
- 30:34Speaker 1: do think Zach was the MVP of this game.
- 30:36Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. Hurts.
- 30:37Speaker 3: I mean, he can make all the throws. He actually
- 30:41Speaker 3: has a pretty good deep ball. So I don't know why.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Or it's like, oh, he's got all this talent around him.
- 30:49Speaker 3: That's the other thing you always hear about him. But no,
- 30:50Speaker 3: he's a legitimately good quarterback.
- 30:53Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 30:54Speaker 3: Today is all about Zach Vaughn. He was just phenomenal. So, yeah,
- 31:01Speaker 3: that's my MVP.
- 31:02Speaker 2: All right, folks, that's going to do it for us here.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Philadelphia Eagles beating again the Washington Commanders week one of
- 31:10Speaker 1: the NFL season by a score of 24 to 22.
- 31:13Speaker 1: The Eagles are playing the Tennessee Titans next week on
- 31:16Speaker 1: the road down in Nashville. And I'm Jeff Warren. This
- 31:21Speaker 1: is Len Hunsicker here. Buddy, you got any final thoughts
- 31:23Speaker 1: before we head out?
- 31:25Speaker 3: Just a weird non-game related thing. Whenever I saw the
- 31:30Speaker 3: wide shot of the crowd, I think the fans have
- 31:32Speaker 3: spoken in terms of what jersey they prefer, and it's
- 31:35Speaker 3: the one you're wearing.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Yes.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Kelly green seemed like it was outnumbering the, the midnight green,
- 31:40Speaker 3: like nine to one in those wide crowd shots. I
- 31:44Speaker 3: don't know why I didn't pick up on it before,
- 31:47Speaker 3: but I was like, Oh my God. It's like, so yeah,
- 31:50Speaker 3: we all love it.
- 31:50Speaker 2: We all love it.
- 31:51Speaker 3: That's why it's nostalgia. It's, it's what, especially if you're
- 31:55Speaker 3: our age, it's what you grew up with.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Absolutely. Folks head on over to Philadelphia sports table.com. That's
- 31:59Speaker 1: where you can get all of our podcasts. We're over
- 32:01Speaker 1: of course, on a Apple podcast, Spotify.com. If you're listening
- 32:06Speaker 1: to us, head on over to YouTube. You can watch
- 32:08Speaker 1: our pretty faces over there.
- 32:11Speaker 3: Are they pretty?
- 32:12Speaker 2: No, probably not.
- 32:13Speaker 4: Right, Len?
- 32:15Speaker 1: Not at all. All right, folks, that's going to do
- 32:17Speaker 1: it for us. We got a lot of content coming
- 32:20Speaker 1: up this week. We're going to be getting into the
- 32:21Speaker 1: Philadelphia Union on our table talk show and going to
- 32:25Speaker 1: be getting into some Phillies on the.
- 32:26Speaker 2: Regular show as well. We will catch you next time.
- 32:30Speaker 3: Take care.
