- 2:23Speaker 5: assumptionhow I'm like, oh, he probably curious about what I'm doing.
- 2:26Speaker 5: And so I was like, well, why not go to
- 2:29Speaker 5: this car see what he wants to talk about. And
- 2:31Speaker 5: so I went there and I can't remember exactly the
- 2:34Speaker 5: first thing he said to me, but I think.
- 2:36Speaker 1: It was along the lines of what are you doing
- 2:38Speaker 1: it did?
- 2:40Speaker 5: I told him I was doing something for north uh
- 2:43Speaker 5: Northwestern Mutual love you guys, and then you're telling me, yeah, man,
- 2:47Speaker 5: we've been looking for a guy to do social media.
- 2:51Speaker 1: It was crazy. It's just interviewed like three. I was
- 2:54Speaker 1: that weak. Yeah, yeah, I remember that. And then he
- 2:57Speaker 1: walked across the and I was like, I think this
- 2:59Speaker 1: was like, you know, whatever that is when it's a
- 3:02Speaker 1: good thing you did, flipp me off or anything like
- 3:04Speaker 1: when you I'm in the park lot, that's good and man,
- 3:08Speaker 1: that's awesome. That was great timing. And then we took

- 4:30Speaker 1: of the first full year of the show, and uh,
- 4:33Speaker 1: and then we'll re up something fun and new after that.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Yeah fun, All right, here we go. Let me get
- 4:39Speaker 1: started out. So, uh, this this was a submitted story.
- 4:42Speaker 1: So so I'm on the management team. Here it is.
- 4:45Speaker 1: I'm on the management team at a pretty well known
- 4:48Speaker 1: indoor interactive attraction. They're not going to say the name.
- 4:53Speaker 1: And after about a year, I get asked to start
- 4:55Speaker 1: conducting interviews for supervisor roles that would be reporting directly
- 5:00Speaker 1: to me. We had some solid candidates come through, but
- 5:04Speaker 1: one interview with almost five up from almost five years ago,
- 5:09Speaker 1: still lives rent free in my head. The candidate was
- 5:12Speaker 1: scheduled for one PM. By one five, we still hadn't
- 5:16Speaker 1: heard anything, so we tried calling and got no answer.
- 5:21Speaker 1: At that point we assumed he'd just ghosted us, and
- 5:24Speaker 1: we moved on their day. And then they just showed
- 5:27Speaker 1: up at no explanation, no apology, and I reluctantly agreed
- 5:36Speaker 1: to go ahead and interview them in a way.
- 5:38Speaker 3: I don't no idea what, but josephro did they know
- 5:41Speaker 3: it was that one or did they think it was
- 5:43Speaker 3: too I.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Did say when I asked about the lateness. Okay. Here
- 5:46Speaker 1: They look at me and say, I had things to do.
- 5:51Speaker 1: I'm a busy man. Of course I'll have time for
- 5:54Speaker 1: this interaction activity. Can you imagine that? That's crazy? You
- 5:59Speaker 1: were running forty five It's like to an hour, you know,
- 6:01Speaker 1: you everything? Okay, I'm busy. I have things to do. Bro,
- 6:06Speaker 1: I'm working you to go to the bank. Wow. Okay,
- 6:10Speaker 1: so I had already mentally moved on at that point. Yeah,
- 6:13Speaker 1: but I finished the interview out of professionalism. Right then
- 6:18Speaker 1: their phone rings, They answer it, excuse it, talks, I'm good,
- 6:24Speaker 1: excuse themselves, and leave me sitting alone in the interview room.
- 6:29Speaker 1: They come back and we picked back up and this, guys,
- 6:34Speaker 1: did it happens again? So we did not offer him
- 6:37Speaker 1: the job? Shocking? Yeah, I know. What followed was a
- 6:41Speaker 1: series of calls to our office. This is this gets me.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I just read for it.
- 6:49Speaker 4: It's like.
- 6:50Speaker 1: What what followed was a series of calls to our
- 6:54Speaker 1: office demanding to know why they didn't get it. What happened?
- 6:59Speaker 1: I know that, mind you, mind you.
- 7:01Speaker 3: He did not have to acceend the interview after he showed.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Up for Our general manager eventually got on the phone
- 7:08Speaker 1: and told them exactly why. Yeah, let me tell me.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I have to say I respect it. Yeah. Yeah, some
- 7:14Speaker 1: people really do walk into an interview and leave you
- 7:16Speaker 1: with absolutely no questions. That's the decision you're gonna make.
- 7:21Speaker 1: It wasn't a hard decision.
- 7:22Speaker 2: That that guy whoever interviewed him, and he's got the
- 7:25Speaker 2: patients of a saint.
- 7:27Speaker 3: I was just about to say that like calling and
- 7:29Speaker 3: demanding why you don't get the job when he didn't
- 7:31Speaker 3: even have to do the interview with you in the
- 7:33Speaker 3: first place.
- 7:34Speaker 1: He showed up so because he literally said that he was.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Already mentally checked out when the guy showed up, it's like,
- 7:39Speaker 3: I'll just brush it past me whatever.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I was like, I'm not going to heard this
- 7:43Speaker 1: guy just showed up late. Yeah, especially when you as
- 7:45Speaker 1: soon as you ask. If if I asked, hey, you
- 7:48Speaker 1: were you're running late? You know everything, he's like, oh,
- 7:51Speaker 1: I had things to do, I'd have been like, okay
- 7:54Speaker 1: I did too, Okay, so do I, which was.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Why considering your interview was forty five minutes ago, So
- 8:01Speaker 3: how about you just get up and get on out
- 8:02Speaker 3: of here.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Well, it's like imagine repisode. I'm almost surprised.
- 8:06Speaker 2: I mean, I guess you know, he's trying to be professional,
- 8:08Speaker 2: but like if he has that behavior during the interview,
- 8:11Speaker 2: can imagine work with somebody like that?
- 8:13Speaker 1: Like, Yeah, we a meeting at noon. I think I
- 8:15Speaker 1: think here's here's why. I think. I think you should
- 8:18Speaker 1: send in your bad interview stories. Yeah, not just your
- 8:21Speaker 1: bad higher stories, some of those. Yeah. I mean, you
- 8:25Speaker 1: know there are so many flame out, absolute train wreck interviews. Yeah,
- 8:30Speaker 1: that would be so funny to like be in the
- 8:33Speaker 1: room be like what to say. I've been at them.
- 8:37Speaker 3: I'm just like what next time we film, I'm gonna
- 8:40Speaker 3: come in like and say I had I had.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Things to do. Sorry. When I asked THEE, so tell
- 8:45Speaker 1: me why'd you why'd you leave that last job? You
- 8:47Speaker 1: know what was up? And they get real serious on
- 8:51Speaker 1: you and go, it's a lack of integrity of that company. Yeah,
- 8:57Speaker 1: it's like a standard answer, And I'm like, interesting, Yeah,
- 9:02Speaker 1: it was virtuous enough. I mean, you know, didn't didn't
- 9:05Speaker 1: reach your standard values. It's kind of a red flag
- 9:08Speaker 1: when they talk bad about it is a company anyway,
- 9:11Speaker 1: It totally is. Yeah, there's so many young people who
- 9:14Speaker 1: are just moving around in a job. I don't who
- 9:16Speaker 1: cares you know, especially when you're young, you know, if
- 9:19Speaker 1: you're experimenting you know who, because it just wasn't a
- 9:23Speaker 1: great fit for the culture. Whatever it was, was it
- 9:26Speaker 1: a right job for me unless you're applying for the
- 9:28Speaker 1: same exact job, you know. Yeah, but whatever it is,
- 9:31Speaker 1: you know, But to do you know, it just seems like,
- 9:36Speaker 1: you know, like I'm gonna try to position myself as
- 9:39Speaker 1: as elevated by saying the company wasn't up to my standards.
- 9:43Speaker 1: You know, they just didn't have the integrity that you know,
- 9:47Speaker 1: and I hear that. I can't tell you how many
- 9:49Speaker 1: times I've heard that. Yeah, I don't know. I do
- 9:53Speaker 1: would love to see more higher stories, more interview stories.
- 9:57Speaker 1: That's insane. I mean, I just can't imagine.
- 9:59Speaker 2: I feel like, you know, in interviews, you're trying to
- 10:01Speaker 2: be the best version of yourself.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Obviously, you're trying to best. This is the best, This
- 10:05Speaker 1: is trying to be trying to be prompt, trying to
- 10:07Speaker 1: be respectful, and so just like to be late is
- 10:10Speaker 1: scary anyways, Like I did anxious to think about just
- 10:12Speaker 1: being late to an interview. Can imagine the anxiety you
- 10:14Speaker 1: would be under nath that I know you you just
- 10:17Speaker 1: I mean I'll try to be that fifty five minutes early. Yeah,
- 10:19Speaker 1: I mean Nathan would be.
- 10:22Speaker 2: So can you imagine like if I'm talking to you,
- 10:26Speaker 2: I really want this job. Oh sorry, I gotta take this.
- 10:28Speaker 2: My buddy's calling me. Yeah, just give me a minute.
- 10:31Speaker 2: He did that twice.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Yeah, that's crazy. Before we dive back into the chaos

- 10:39Speaker 1: by be checks. Hiring shouldn't feel like rolling the dice.

- 11:12Speaker 1: Go to bchecks dot io. That's bc h e X
- 11:17Speaker 1: dot io. I don't know, all right, let's go. We
- 11:20Speaker 1: got a segment that that we did. Who did the segment? Oh?
- 11:24Speaker 1: This next to clip is this David?
- 11:26Speaker 2: I think we got a segment store with David is yeah,
- 11:28Speaker 2: and so I like David and so I interviewed David.
- 11:32Speaker 1: I'll descend this to him afterwards. I think I mentioned
- 11:34Speaker 1: that I was going to he's super nice. I added
- 11:37Speaker 1: him on LinkedIn, and he's calling in from Saint Louis.
- 11:39Speaker 1: So here's David.
- 11:40Speaker 6: We had hired a relatively young, not very experienced person
- 11:44Speaker 6: for an entry level position within the organization. I interviewed them.
- 11:47Speaker 6: They passed all the you know, background checks and all that,
- 11:50Speaker 6: but it was pretty evident from like the first week
- 11:52Speaker 6: that things didn't seem quite great. It wasn't a whoops,
- 11:55Speaker 6: we should hire the wrong person, but it was definitely like,
- 11:57Speaker 6: let's try to do what we can to help this
- 11:59Speaker 6: person and along. But despite our efforts, things just weren't
- 12:03Speaker 6: clicking with this person. So, you know, we have a
- 12:05Speaker 6: time of a three month window of where we can
- 12:07Speaker 6: like say, look, you know, this isn't quite working. Let's
- 12:09Speaker 6: let's try to work on some improvement. And I sat
- 12:11Speaker 6: down with him with the head of HR and talked
- 12:13Speaker 6: about what we could.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Do to improve.
- 12:14Speaker 6: So he started swearing at us about why our performance
- 12:18Speaker 6: information that we were saying was false and the information
- 12:22Speaker 6: that we had was fake. Everyone there was against him,
- 12:24Speaker 6: and my resources were bad and then I pulled out
- 12:27Speaker 6: all the reports that I had and showed him why
- 12:29Speaker 6: the reports were right. He took his papers that he
- 12:32Speaker 6: had and threw him across the room a storm, toward
- 12:34Speaker 6: the door, and I'm like, wait, don't leave. Let let's
- 12:36Speaker 6: let's talk about this now. In hindsight, I should have
- 12:38Speaker 6: like asked him to stay. And he turned around. He goes,
- 12:41Speaker 6: I don't want to be in a performance improvement plan.
- 12:43Speaker 6: If I told you that I had a deadly disease,
- 12:46Speaker 6: would that change your perspective? What are you talking about?
- 12:51Speaker 6: He's like, well, if I shared with you that I
- 12:54Speaker 6: have a disease that it's really you know, it's impacting
- 12:56Speaker 6: me and it's impacting my performance, would that change anything.
- 12:59Speaker 6: I'm like, you know what, this doesn't change anything at all.
- 13:01Speaker 6: Your performance is not great. We're trying to put you
- 13:03Speaker 6: an improvement plan. And so with that, he left the room,
- 13:06Speaker 6: slammed the door so hard that it cracked the dry
- 13:09Speaker 6: wall all the way up the ceiling. The door closes,
- 13:11Speaker 6: and he starts screaming at everyone he can see the.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Police show up.
- 13:16Speaker 6: He had threatened to pull out his gun, which he
- 13:17Speaker 6: did not have, and shoot people. Definitely not greatest hiring
- 13:21Speaker 6: moment with that individual.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Just escalated. Wers.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Look, he was like, you threatened to pull out his
- 13:34Speaker 3: gun that he did not have.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Wait, do you love David's personality surrounded by this chaos out?
- 13:50Speaker 1: I need more Davids in my life? Does a crazy
- 13:54Speaker 1: story is insane? Well? What if I told you that
- 13:57Speaker 1: I have a terminal disease? Could performance for proven Land
- 14:01Speaker 1: if that was deadly ill? Would you not put me
- 14:04Speaker 1: on it? He's not even saying because this is bad,
- 14:08Speaker 1: I can say I'm deadly ill.
- 14:10Speaker 2: You know, he's not even saying that he has a
- 14:12Speaker 2: deadly because yeah, you say, yes. There are those moments still,
- 14:23Speaker 2: those moments on the show with people where it's like
- 14:26Speaker 2: they kind of come to a crossroads where it's like, okay,
- 14:28Speaker 2: maybe it's maybe you give them the benefit of the doubt,
- 14:31Speaker 2: and then they go over the top and they slam
- 14:33Speaker 2: the door, curse, everybody, pull out their gun and stuff.
- 14:36Speaker 2: It's like, okay, maybe they're past the point of no overturn,
- 14:39Speaker 2: Like I really got to let them go.
- 14:41Speaker 1: You know, that's just that'sn't saying. That escalated very quickly.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Randall and I were talking this week about I think
- 14:46Speaker 1: it's Zappos. I think is the name of the company.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Is that is that the shoe company, shoe the shoe zapper,
- 14:56Speaker 1: that's a shoe either one. It's they're known for their culture.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Maybe someone can I think it is. I forget they
- 15:02Speaker 1: were somebody could known for their culture. I think we did.
- 15:05Speaker 1: You know, a year or two ago, we were studying
- 15:07Speaker 1: some of their culture deck stuff as we were developing
- 15:09Speaker 1: our culture deck and thinking about how to communicate it
- 15:11Speaker 1: to our employees and stuff. And but he Randall's reading
- 15:17Speaker 1: was reading a book or something. He was talking about them,
- 15:20Speaker 1: and he was telling me that at the end of
- 15:24Speaker 1: ninety days, because this guy was talking about that ninety day.
- 15:26Speaker 1: They was talking about the ninety day kind of you
- 15:28Speaker 1: know check in that they have a bonus that they
- 15:32Speaker 1: will pay you if you resign. Oh wow. And then
- 15:36Speaker 1: apparently the bonus gets bigger every month for the first
- 15:41Speaker 1: several months after that, until it gets a certain amount
- 15:45Speaker 1: that it's you know, basically, it's like, hey, we'll pay
- 15:49Speaker 1: you to say out loud that you've already figured out
- 15:52Speaker 1: this isn't a great fit for you. Interesting. What we
- 15:54Speaker 1: don't want is for you to just kind of feel stuck.
- 15:57Speaker 1: I guess the mediocre and like, I can't leave now
- 16:00Speaker 1: to be too early on my resume, you know all that.
- 16:04Speaker 1: You know people who are like, Eh, this isn't for me,
- 16:07Speaker 1: but now I'm kind of stuck here for a bit.
- 16:09Speaker 1: I'll spend a year or two and then yeah, you know,
- 16:11Speaker 1: I thought, and I think it goes up to that.
- 16:18Speaker 1: I think it was something maybe it went up to
- 16:20Speaker 1: like year three or something. But I was like, I mean,
- 16:22Speaker 1: I bet, I bet post year three retention is like
- 16:24Speaker 1: really really good because you know they've made a financial
- 16:27Speaker 1: decision that they could have gotten some quick money just
- 16:31Speaker 1: to just to tap out and say, you know what
- 16:33Speaker 1: wasn't for me. I just thought it was hiring.
- 16:36Speaker 2: It is so interesting to me because it's like, if
- 16:40Speaker 2: you're there's so much figuring out to do, you know,
- 16:42Speaker 2: and so it's like, once you find somebody that you
- 16:44Speaker 2: really really really like, you you know you want to
- 16:47Speaker 2: keep them. That's that's golden. A lot of times there's
- 16:49Speaker 2: that whole figuring out process. Obviously an interview, but even yeah,
- 16:52Speaker 2: those first three months, you're like, if this person is
- 16:55Speaker 2: really bad in the long term, I'd rather know now
- 16:57Speaker 2: in the first sixty ninety days, yea, and instead of
- 17:00Speaker 2: figured out years down the line and all this damage stuff.
- 17:03Speaker 1: A year down the line, yeah, a year. You know.
- 17:07Speaker 1: I was, I was telling a story about the other
- 17:11Speaker 1: day about you know, a bad hire maid, and I
- 17:16Speaker 1: actually had a choice between two people, and I mean,
- 17:22Speaker 1: I keep up with some reason why I couldn't hire
- 17:23Speaker 1: the best qualified one, right, and and it was really
- 17:27Speaker 1: stupid what I did, and it and I hired this
- 17:30Speaker 1: other one right, and it was a complete utter disaster
- 17:37Speaker 1: for a year. And the cost of it was it
- 17:41Speaker 1: was millions of dollars because it was it was the
- 17:44Speaker 1: lost you know, this was a regional manager's supposed to
- 17:47Speaker 1: run this multimillion dollar region and you know, this region
- 17:50Speaker 1: didn't grow. In fact, it contracted instead of growing. You know,
- 17:54Speaker 1: just yes, it was just bad. It really cost Yeah,
- 17:58Speaker 1: And and I thought, you know, I was analyzing later
- 18:02Speaker 1: why I made that decision, you know, and because I
- 18:07Speaker 1: followed the other person his career for a while and
- 18:11Speaker 1: she just crushed it in her career. And I was like,
- 18:15Speaker 1: I had a chance to hire and I didn't. Dang.
- 18:17Speaker 1: And you know, it's like one of the big in
- 18:21Speaker 1: all the hiring I've ever done, probably it's such a
- 18:24Speaker 1: big decision at all times, which is why it's it.
- 18:28Speaker 1: It is the decision. We kind of just throw it
- 18:31Speaker 1: around these days.
- 18:32Speaker 2: You know, you see LinkedIn jobs there's people hiring people fire,
- 18:35Speaker 2: like leaving jobs is like, I guess it's not really
- 18:38Speaker 2: even thought about, and especially you know we're in the
- 18:40Speaker 2: background check industry. Like it's actually such a big, big piece.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Like if you're gonna, like I said, like, if you're
- 18:45Speaker 2: gonna know that this is not a good fit, I'd
- 18:47Speaker 2: rather know now because that those types of just hiring
- 18:50Speaker 2: decisions can make such crazy impacts and companies that are
- 18:54Speaker 2: easy good or bad. Yeah, you know, it's it's scary,
- 18:57Speaker 2: it's real stuff.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Well, I mean it's it's where we're coming up. Do
- 19:00Speaker 1: we just do your year? Yeah, it's kind of confusing.
- 19:03Speaker 1: We haven't really decided on whether or not you were
- 19:05Speaker 1: I'm good. I'm just about a one year. First. I
- 19:08Speaker 1: was like, are you talking about me? Oh? They got
- 19:10Speaker 1: I think got cost dollars. I hired the wrong version.
- 19:14Speaker 1: We said one year.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Well, I started one year ago just about today part time,
- 19:19Speaker 2: and I started full time six weeks ago. You out
- 19:22Speaker 2: of California, I have like two start dates on most
- 19:24Speaker 2: I guess I'm coming up on the start one.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:27Speaker 2: So it's been great, all right, Nithan, you got a story, yep, okay,
- 19:31Speaker 2: so I got another software engineer story. So my company
- 19:35Speaker 2: hires a software engineer for a fully remote role. The
- 19:39Speaker 2: guy crushed every step of the interview. He is smart, articulate,
- 19:43Speaker 2: sharp on whiteboard coding challenges, and he accepts the offer.
- 19:47Speaker 2: We ship him the equipment and he sets up all
- 19:48Speaker 2: of his accounts, and on Monday morning, he logs into
- 19:52Speaker 2: our team stand up meeting with his camera on. And
- 19:55Speaker 2: it is not the same guy.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Uh.
- 19:58Speaker 2: And I don't mean that it's he's like kind of similar.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Maybe the lightning is different. I mean it's a different
- 20:03Speaker 2: human being, different face, different voice, different age. The guy
- 20:06Speaker 2: that we interviewed looked maybe twenty eight years old. The
- 20:09Speaker 2: person on the screen on Monday morning was closed to
- 20:11Speaker 2: forty five. So I messaged my manager on Slack and
- 20:15Speaker 2: I ask her, as casual as I can, do you
- 20:17Speaker 2: think that Do you think this is actually him? She says,
- 20:20Speaker 2: I think So I tell her to pull up the
- 20:23Speaker 2: interview recording and we both go looking at the same time.
- 20:27Speaker 2: The lightning is weird. I guess, and it is absolutely,
- 20:30Speaker 2: definitively not the same person. So we pull him into
- 20:34Speaker 2: a private Zoom meeting and my manager asks him directly,
- 20:37Speaker 2: are you the same person that we interviewed. There's a
- 20:39Speaker 2: long pause and he says, I'm working with him. The
- 20:43Speaker 2: guy that we hired is his cousin.
- 20:45Speaker 1: The cousin does the interviews and then he does the
- 20:47Speaker 1: actual work and then they split the pay, which is crazy. Well,
- 20:53Speaker 1: it sounds like the cousin has got the better part
- 20:55Speaker 1: of that deal.
- 20:56Speaker 2: I just did the interview, yeah job, I guess the
- 20:58Speaker 2: other guy just hash interview anxiety. I don't know. So
- 21:01Speaker 2: it turns out this is a known and growing scam.
- 21:03Speaker 2: People who specialize in passing technical interviews and then hand
- 21:07Speaker 2: and then they hand the job off to someone else.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Who actually does the work for a fraction of the salary.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Story you read.
- 21:13Speaker 1: It's a little bit like that episode.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Uh well, the interview, Yeah, the interviewer takes takes a cut,
- 21:18Speaker 2: I guess. So we fired him, We blacklisted the cousin,
- 21:22Speaker 2: and we notify the recruiting platform. The whole thing was
- 21:24Speaker 2: over in about six hours, and the wildest part was
- 21:27Speaker 2: that he was apparently pretty competent.
- 21:29Speaker 1: He just was not the person we hired. I guess
- 21:33Speaker 1: that's a new one. I guess there's places in which
- 21:34Speaker 1: that would work, in which the hiring team was you know,
- 21:37Speaker 1: potentially you know, far enough away from you know physically
- 21:43Speaker 1: or yeah, technically far enough away from you know, the
- 21:47Speaker 1: project team where they're never going to be in you know,
- 21:50Speaker 1: he shows up, it's you know, you're he's handed over,
- 21:52Speaker 1: and so he just shows up, and yeah, everyone doesn't
- 21:55Speaker 1: really you know, there are some holes in the plan,
- 21:58Speaker 1: like if there are twins, that would really that we.
- 22:02Speaker 3: Did have a story like that once where it was twins.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Twins and yeah, great memory for the stories.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean she's you know, digging thro all the
- 22:11Speaker 2: social eclips and here if we hear the stories, yeah yeah,
- 22:14Speaker 2: but yeah, and also if they were me within two
- 22:16Speaker 2: years of each other's age, It's just like, I can't
- 22:18Speaker 2: imagine there's one guy's twenties one guy's upper forties or
- 22:21Speaker 2: whatever it is.
- 22:22Speaker 1: That's very strange. Holes and counting on what that guy's
- 22:26Speaker 1: just count counting on and he probably doesn't know, but
- 22:29Speaker 1: he's just counting on. And I'm hoping that first meeting
- 22:31Speaker 1: I go to no one I interviewed with is there. Yeah,
- 22:35Speaker 1: I guess so, And you're right.
- 22:36Speaker 2: It's like, Okay, i'll do the one hour interview, you
- 22:39Speaker 2: take the full time job.
- 22:39Speaker 1: We'll go fifty to fifty. Like it's kind of a
- 22:42Speaker 1: weird plan. Maybe it's just a cut of the first Yeah,
- 22:44Speaker 1: and get me the five brand, give me five grand
- 22:46Speaker 1: to get.
- 22:47Speaker 3: It's like, how did they think that was going to work?
- 22:51Speaker 3: I don't know, interviewing with one person and then the
- 22:55Speaker 3: other person doing the job, knowing that they can see.
- 23:00Speaker 1: It's a growing scan work. If if if placement is
- 23:05Speaker 1: separated like from the interview process, if they're hiring managers
- 23:10Speaker 1: not involved in the hiring Yeah, like you know what
- 23:13Speaker 1: I mean.
- 23:13Speaker 2: I know some companies are humongous, and so maybe that's
- 23:16Speaker 2: maybe what they're going on. You know, I'm just like
- 23:19Speaker 2: not ever just kind of slipping in and just not
- 23:21Speaker 2: ever being noticed.
- 23:22Speaker 1: I guess, yeah, I don't know.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess that makes sense. But still that's like
- 23:26Speaker 3: how long do you how long do you think you're
- 23:28Speaker 3: going to get away with that?
- 23:29Speaker 1: So of these stories are kind of like just different
- 23:31Speaker 1: versions of the same plot, and that that's a new
- 23:34Speaker 1: one for me. I've never heard that.
- 23:35Speaker 3: I've never heard that.
- 23:37Speaker 1: You're right, there seems to be there seems to be
- 23:42Speaker 1: this kind of recurring themes of the different types of
- 23:45Speaker 1: blow ups. You know, hey, have you this guy twice today?
- 23:48Speaker 1: I think we heard or in the last couple of
- 23:50Speaker 1: shows where it starts off like, hey, everything started good
- 23:53Speaker 1: for the first two weeks. You know, it's like when
- 23:58Speaker 1: good behavior for two weeks, I don't know.
- 24:01Speaker 2: We don't have a lot of bad heart stories where
- 24:03Speaker 2: it's like in on their eleventh year they turned bad.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Get like I always called an og flame out where
- 24:08Speaker 1: he's just like, you know, I've just had it and
- 24:11Speaker 1: blows up and yeah, but you know, the early the
- 24:16Speaker 1: early flameouts, you know, it really is that kind of
- 24:19Speaker 1: rough period in the end of feel like most talent
- 24:21Speaker 1: acquisition for folks and recruiters are just holding their breath
- 24:23Speaker 1: the whole time. And now, you know, and you've got
- 24:26Speaker 1: to believe there's like some third party embarrassment too, when
- 24:29Speaker 1: you're like somebody you freaking hired. Yeah, I remember a
- 24:33Speaker 1: story about a girl who you remember the story with
- 24:36Speaker 1: the It was a segment where she, yes, she's I
- 24:41Speaker 1: remember it was a segment. I'm trying to remember her name.
- 24:43Speaker 1: She was a recruiter. She she was so sweet and
- 24:46Speaker 1: she she had such patience and this guy didn't show up.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and he didn't show up for the next day,
- 24:51Speaker 1: and then he didn't show and then every day she's
- 24:53Speaker 1: calling him, Yes, hey, are you gonna be here today?
- 24:56Speaker 1: And finally he was like, can I just work remote? Yeah,
- 24:59Speaker 1: like we did not agree to that was Ignacia? Is
- 25:01Speaker 1: their name? What was your name? Ignacia? I think she
- 25:04Speaker 1: was at San Francisco. Yeah, yeah, that's wrong, and it
- 25:06Speaker 1: was just I don't know, it's like this is uh yeah,
- 25:12Speaker 1: that's got to be that third part because you worked hard,
- 25:14Speaker 1: you know, the hiring manager way, you're vouching for them,
- 25:17Speaker 1: you know, and then you're like, yeah, I think she
- 25:21Speaker 1: mentioned it as a reason I remember is like there's
- 25:24Speaker 1: a little bit of this embarrassment that you just you know, yeah,
- 25:27Speaker 1: somebody you honed in on, you know, just totally let
- 25:31Speaker 1: you down when you did the placement. So yeah, uh probably,
- 25:36Speaker 1: uh sorry, here we go, Emma, you ready, yes.
- 25:40Speaker 3: To make sure my stories pulled up? Okay ready. In
- 25:43Speaker 3: twenty twenty four, a popular US bank fired more than
- 25:47Speaker 3: a dozen of its own wealth management employees. On the
- 25:49Speaker 3: same day, all for the same reason. The reason, according
- 25:53Speaker 3: to official financial industry regulatory authority filings, was, and I'm
- 25:58Speaker 3: going to read you the exact language because it's too
- 26:00Speaker 3: good to paraphrase. Simulation of keyboard activity creating impression of
- 26:06Speaker 3: active work. That's the official language from a regulatory filing translation.
- 26:12Speaker 3: They had been pretending to type.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Oh, there you go.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Here's how it works. A lot of companies that monitor
- 26:17Speaker 3: remote employees use software that tracks mouse movement and keystrokes.
- 26:22Speaker 3: If you're idle too long, it flags you, so naturally,
- 26:25Speaker 3: a cottage industry emerged around this, and you can now
- 26:27Speaker 3: buy little USB devices on Amazon called mouse jigglers that
- 26:30Speaker 3: slowly wiggle your cursor for you to.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Make it look like you're actively working.
- 26:34Speaker 3: They run they're like ten bucks. Wow, several of the sorry,
- 26:41Speaker 3: they're like ten bucks if you.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Care, Yeah, here's the link.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Yeah. Several of the bank's wealth management employees, people responsible
- 26:49Speaker 3: for other people's actual retirement savings, apparently bought lees, plugged
- 26:52Speaker 3: them in, and walked away from their desks for weeks,
- 26:55Speaker 3: possibly months.
- 26:56Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 26:57Speaker 3: Eventually the security team noticed that the movement and looked off.
- 27:01Speaker 3: Apparently the wiggle of a real human hand looks different
- 27:04Speaker 3: from the wiggle of a ten dollars USB stick, and
- 27:06Speaker 3: this is evidently a known thing in it The bank
- 27:11Speaker 3: filed everything with f I and RA, which means these
- 27:14Speaker 3: terminations are now part of the official permanent record of
- 27:17Speaker 3: the financial industry. Every one of those employees now have
- 27:21Speaker 3: a regulatory file that says they were fired for simulating
- 27:24Speaker 3: work activity that follows you for the rest of a
- 27:27Speaker 3: finance career for ten bucks. That's crazy, all that for
- 27:30Speaker 3: ten bucks. The wildest part is that if any of
- 27:32Speaker 3: them had just occasionally moved the mouse themselves, they probably
- 27:35Speaker 3: wouldn't have been caught, right they walked away and then
- 27:40Speaker 3: walked back to their desk and moved it around themselves
- 27:44Speaker 3: to the gym.
- 27:44Speaker 1: And or they could have done their job. I guess
- 27:47Speaker 1: that's the scary part.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Can you imagine, like, hey, how's my retirement doing, And
- 27:51Speaker 2: it's like just being sqwiggled around.
- 27:53Speaker 1: It's like, hey, I kind of need that money. That's
- 27:56Speaker 1: the scariest part. It's not like they're I mean, you're
- 27:59Speaker 1: supposed to be looking in my count and paying attention. Yes,
- 28:01Speaker 1: it's not like they're just doing I don't know, so much.
- 28:03Speaker 1: It's crazy lazy. Some people are, oh yeah, that's insane. Well, yeah,
- 28:08Speaker 1: there's a whole jiggler. It is the it's the remote work.
- 28:13Speaker 1: I always say there's for remote work to be successful,
- 28:16Speaker 1: it is going to be the right person and the
- 28:19Speaker 1: right job aligned. Right. There's certain remote work jobs, there's
- 28:22Speaker 1: certain remote work people. Put the two together and it's
- 28:25Speaker 1: it's really great and there's a lot of benefits to it.
- 28:29Speaker 1: If either one of those isn't great, right, if you
- 28:31Speaker 1: don't have the right person. And clearly these twelve people
- 28:33Speaker 1: weren't the right the right people because you know, given
- 28:37Speaker 1: the freedom of not working in an accountable environment with
- 28:40Speaker 1: peers around you and managers and all that, you decided
- 28:43Speaker 1: to buy a ten dollar jiggler and try to get
- 28:45Speaker 1: out of it. Just not work, you know. And I
- 28:49Speaker 1: guess you know, the appeal of that is too strong.
- 28:52Speaker 1: You know, it's like wow, it's they would never know.
- 28:55Speaker 1: I think the technology, here's this. I've had that happen here.
- 29:00Speaker 1: It was heartbreaking because it happened once and I brought
- 29:06Speaker 1: I brought a person in and I coached him and
- 29:08Speaker 1: loved on him and said, hey, man, you know that
- 29:11Speaker 1: can't happen again. I mean, it's a it's a it's
- 29:13Speaker 1: a character issue. You know, he was young, he was
- 29:19Speaker 1: and smart and had and had a lot of upside
- 29:22Speaker 1: and and he did just a jiggler, right. And the
- 29:27Speaker 1: software today that that's used, we use it is it's
- 29:34Speaker 1: not just for detecting. It's also for safety and security
- 29:37Speaker 1: when you went in a high secure environment, when you
- 29:39Speaker 1: moved to certain pro when you move to certain things.
- 29:43Speaker 1: So it can you know, it can track what you do.
- 29:45Speaker 1: It can track if you use, if you upload something,
- 29:48Speaker 1: the type of the websites you go to, it can
- 29:50Speaker 1: and we can tag websites as productive others is not
- 29:53Speaker 1: productive and keep people off of you know, uh, the
- 29:57Speaker 1: sites they shouldn't be on in work time type of thing,
- 30:00Speaker 1: you know. And and so there's and then and then
- 30:06Speaker 1: it looks at your activity like, hey, they were there,
- 30:08Speaker 1: they weren't their computer was dead for two hours, you
- 30:11Speaker 1: know you and so you can look at it and
- 30:13Speaker 1: and and tell. But the tech is significant and bright
- 30:20Speaker 1: and I'm sure very expensive to build, right. And so
- 30:24Speaker 1: the second time this uh, this, this uh, this happened
- 30:29Speaker 1: with the same person. I think he had built a
- 30:32Speaker 1: little app or some type of little Macro to switch
- 30:35Speaker 1: tabs and move the cursor, so it looked like he
- 30:38Speaker 1: was going between his here and here right. Yeah, and
- 30:44Speaker 1: and uh so you know, as I said, I was like,
- 30:46Speaker 1: you do you do? You do you think really that
- 30:49Speaker 1: you know, a Macro you could build in fifteen minutes
- 30:51Speaker 1: is going to you know that the the system that
- 30:54Speaker 1: this company has spent millions of dollars building, and this
- 30:58Speaker 1: company has got a value wation of x dollars, you
- 31:02Speaker 1: has very valuable company. Do you think the whole company
- 31:05Speaker 1: was going to be undone under your fifteen cent either macro?
- 31:08Speaker 1: You know, you think it's not going to pick it up?
- 31:10Speaker 1: It picked it up instantly, sent an alert, you know
- 31:13Speaker 1: that you know potential. I forget what the alert was,
- 31:18Speaker 1: but you know I don't, and I hated it, you know,
- 31:22Speaker 1: and I think that I think for some people just
- 31:24Speaker 1: the appeal of not working it's too strong and you know,
- 31:28Speaker 1: the idea that they could do that. Yeah, but yeah,
- 31:30Speaker 1: it was a big COVID hit. There was a lot
- 31:34Speaker 1: of words of jigglers something. I guess that's what I started.
- 31:39Speaker 2: I meaneah, I mean, I just I can't imagine. So
- 31:41Speaker 2: I work remotely almost all the time, and I can't
- 31:44Speaker 2: imagine ever trying to get away with it, like I've
- 31:47Speaker 2: got too much of my plate because the thing is
- 31:49Speaker 2: like it's not just the fact of like, Okay, maybe
- 31:52Speaker 2: I could like sneak in a day off there, Like
- 31:54Speaker 2: even if I ever could, it's like I got so
- 31:57Speaker 2: much to do. I have to like show, hey, here's
- 31:59Speaker 2: the stuff we've been working on, you know, So it's
- 32:01Speaker 2: like what's the plan on the other side. I guess
- 32:03Speaker 2: even when we were talking about people stacking up jobs
- 32:05Speaker 2: where like they have two or three full time jobs.
- 32:08Speaker 1: I guess those are just easy jobs. I don't know,
- 32:10Speaker 1: but it's like.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Your job is worth doing, then you'll actually just do
- 32:14Speaker 2: it and then you'll have stuff to show for it too,
- 32:16Speaker 2: you know. But it just like blows my mind. I
- 32:18Speaker 2: guess people just think it's like a screen saver. We're like, oh,
- 32:21Speaker 2: if there's screens on, then then I'm good, so that
- 32:23Speaker 2: they think it's that simple, But it's like the technology
- 32:26Speaker 2: is probably a little bit smarter than that of like
- 32:28Speaker 2: your computer's honors off.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it's the tech today is and it's just it's
- 32:32Speaker 1: getting better now. It's probably AI layered all in it
- 32:35Speaker 1: and yeah, you know, so it just absolutely connect whether
- 32:38Speaker 1: you're working or not working, and so and I'm glad
- 32:42Speaker 1: they exist, and you know, we let our team know
- 32:46Speaker 1: and this is what you this is what happens, and
- 32:48Speaker 1: this is you know, this is on there normal accountability.
- 32:51Speaker 1: You know, Initially it was I felt I had a
- 32:54Speaker 1: even I had a problem is that it feels very big brother,
- 32:56Speaker 1: but that I realized that even here's here's what happened,
- 33:01Speaker 1: that there have been multiple people in an organization that
- 33:04Speaker 1: are really good people that just over time got pulled,
- 33:09Speaker 1: you know, by distractions and flexibility. The next thing, you know,
- 33:13Speaker 1: and they're you know, the amount of time they spent
- 33:15Speaker 1: working went from crushing it to just nearly part time.
- 33:21Speaker 1: And it was like a slow boil. It's like you know,
- 33:26Speaker 1: and it wasn't malicious, just the loss of discipline and
- 33:30Speaker 1: of having to get up, walk through the front doors
- 33:32Speaker 1: of a place, have your peers around you, sit at
- 33:35Speaker 1: your desk. You know, you know, if you're not there,
- 33:38Speaker 1: people notice physically. And so without all of those environmental
- 33:46Speaker 1: kind of guardrails, you know, it allows some people to slip.
- 33:53Speaker 1: And you know, it's and I don't necessarily think it
- 33:56Speaker 1: was malicious. And so there were times when we had
- 33:58Speaker 1: to you know, talk to people and say, hey, look
- 34:02Speaker 1: what's happened, you know, and this happened over time and
- 34:05Speaker 1: show them and they're like get in, they get They're like,
- 34:09Speaker 1: I don't know what I was thinking. You know, I
- 34:12Speaker 1: went shopping the middle of the day. Yeah I went,
- 34:15Speaker 1: I went and got my car clean and did this,
- 34:17Speaker 1: ran ran there and they see it. Know, I was
- 34:19Speaker 1: gone five hours and I did that two days this week,
- 34:21Speaker 1: three days, like yeah, you know, and don't mean it,
- 34:25Speaker 1: and it just happens, you know, it slowly happens, and
- 34:27Speaker 1: and so you know, sometimes you get to coach them.
- 34:31Speaker 2: Back to and then and then some people put more
- 34:34Speaker 2: work into now working than than if they would. There's
- 34:37Speaker 2: the absolute let me just just have four full time
- 34:40Speaker 2: jobs and just like lie about it being.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Out all of the all this.
- 34:43Speaker 3: How many times we like told a story about somebody
- 34:47Speaker 3: trying to get around working and where I'm like, that
- 34:50Speaker 3: sounds like a lot of work.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Work, that sounds like a lot of work. Yeah, I
- 34:56Speaker 1: don't get it. Well, hey, that's it for us today.
