- 0:10mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:13Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:15yourself. This message is dedicated to

- 0:27and hundreds of others are always available at
- 0:28www.fromchat.com. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:32You may think you have to own something before taking
- 0:34responsibility, but upgraded Think he knows ownership is a
- 0:37mindset. Here's the story.
- 0:40In 1978, General Bill Creech took command of Air Force's
- 0:44Tactical Air Command. He inherited a problem.
- 0:48Too many jets were sitting on the ground because of
- 0:50maintenance issues. The maintenance system was built
- 0:54on specialists. Tom Peters and Nancy Austin
- 0:57described it this way. A technician might be
- 0:59responsible for two square feet of the right wing of hundreds of
- 1:03planes. Everybody worked on every jet.
- 1:07Nobody was responsible for any one of them.
- 1:10And as Peter and Austin put it, only whole planes fly.
- 1:15So Creech changed it. Each jet got a dedicated crew
- 1:18chief. Crew chiefs weren't new.
- 1:21What was new was this, the same chief on the same jet for the
- 1:25long haul. That plane was theirs.
- 1:28The plane and its mission became the customer.
- 1:31The crew chiefs took it personally.
- 1:34They went everywhere their jets went, deployments, inspections,
- 1:38the wash rack, and they rode their technicians hard.
- 1:41When Creech came around to ask how they like the new
- 1:44arrangement, a Sergeant answered him with a question.
- 1:47General, when's the last time you washed a rental car?
- 1:51Nobody washes a rental car. You fill it up, you drive it,
- 1:54you turn it in, maybe a little dirtier than you found it.
- 1:57It's not yours. But those crew chiefs didn't own
- 2:01those jets. The government did.
- 2:03None of them held a title. They just decided the plane was
- 2:07theirs and that was enough. Ownership is a mindset.
- 2:12You're driving a lot of rentals right now.
- 2:15A job you're just passing through, a team you'd rather not
- 2:18get attached to. Rentals get used owned, things
- 2:22get washed. The better story to tell
- 2:25yourself is I don't need a title to treat it like it's mine.
- 2:29Just out of curiosity, what's one thing you've been treating
- 2:32like a rental that you'd take better care of if you called it
- 2:35yours? Pick one thing today.
- 2:39Your desk, your work, your people.
- 2:42Stop renting it, wash it. Tell me a story of something you
- 2:46decided to own to from Chadsmith at gmailcom.
- 2:50Send someone a text and ask them what's something in your life
- 2:53you've been treating like a rental.
