- 1:33for Night Part three. Carthor Brown Mister Adventures in Excitement and Suspense, based
- 1:53on the bestselling novels by the slick storytelling sensation Cartha Brown. I was walking
- 2:20into it with my eyes open, me nicky knight, the smart private eye
- 2:24call me Sir Lancelot, all set to storm the wicked Prince's castle and rescue
- 2:28the beautiful captive maiden. Only instead of riding my brave steed with my trusty
- 2:32sword, I wrote a buy special beside a two time fraud Lewis de Spray
- 2:38alias Lewie Cats. But this was the only way I could see of finding
- 2:42out what the catch was. We parked a car off the road about a
- 2:46quarter of a mile from the house and cat footed it up to the wall
- 2:49at the back of the building. You think this is the best place night,
- 2:54Yeah, the way I figure it doesn't even chance that block. The
- 2:58god on the gate sleeps in the little gatehouse. Yes, it is.
- 3:01So if we get over the wall here, we got a chance of getting
- 3:04away with it. I'll go first. You give me a push up and
- 3:06then I'll give you a paul. Are you ready ready? Yes? Okay,
- 3:09gip go upset, you jump and I'll grab your Yeah, I can
- 3:20grab my arm. That's it could work, my friend. Now down to
- 3:29the garden there, yeah, let's go. Now, quiet, quiet,
- 3:38Where are we going there? Back door? What if it is locked?
- 3:44I got a little gadget with me. It's pretty useful for the sort of
- 3:46emergency. You you have your gun, lady, of course, why that
- 3:51has hand flecks a knife about it. I'm not taking risks? Are you
- 3:53too? Hold here? Uh? Huh? You will and picked the lock?
- 4:00Now, no, lesson one in the private eye manual. Always test
- 4:04the door before trying to pick it. You never know it might be open.
- 4:10Well, how do you know it tears? It's not black? I
- 4:14wonder this is the kitchen door opens on the hall. Come on, it's
- 4:30a light. It is a light under the door head? Yeah, who
- 4:35lives in the way home? Perhaps he has returned? You just go and
- 4:41see. Don't be crazy. It's a girl we're after. But I am
- 4:44also utter degrade Louis who tears? Who are you? You are? Execution
- 4:49it so much for his highness as the man? Why don't you do that?
- 4:57For it's just frement. Now we go upstairs to find Michael. Correction,
- 5:01please not beleeve me. Ye, I prefer to go the rest of
- 5:05the way alone. Pal, He would just lie there and rest. I
- 5:11went up the stairs two at a time, dodging from side to side as
- 5:14I came to make a difficult target. Then a large curved sword appeared on
- 5:17the landing. Behind it was Abdul, Hello, Abdul, goodbye. As
- 5:26he came toppling down the stairs. I pressed back against the wall and then
- 5:29ran for the door to the harem. I dragged it open and found myself
- 5:32face to face with a dark eyed beauty with small curls and sweet curves.
- 5:38What do you want you, Marie to spray? Yes, I come to
- 5:41take it home. Take me what kind of a coaches? No trick.
- 5:44The prince's dead. Abdul is dead, and if we don't get out of
- 5:46here fast, we'll qualify for the quartet. Not come on? How do
- 6:02you feel now? I do not know. I'm still dizzy from the haste.
- 6:10I'm sorry about that, Marie, about the rough treatment getting over the
- 6:13wall. But a skin knee is better than a punctured high. Oh,
- 6:15I do not mind. I am more than grateful. I kept waiting for
- 6:19Hassan to come yelling afterss. You know that's a funny thing. There was
- 6:26no sign of her Sam, He's the toughest of the lot. Where was
- 6:29he and where was her room? If the prince was back, he should
- 6:31have been too, surely NIKKII the one thing that matters is that we've got
- 6:36away. That's true enough. Woys can't help wondering, where are you taking
- 6:44me to my apartment? First Texas there x Oh, that's wonderful. I
- 6:49would like to see her again. She was kind After that. I'm not
- 6:54sure. The police probably you were kidnapped. Weren't you ride a last summer
- 7:00I met Prince Alzama there I stuck. He was horrible from the first.
- 7:04I had to move on it afterwards. Have you got a brother named Louie?
- 7:10No, I'm an only child. Does the name Louie Kats mean anything
- 7:15to you? What you? Only Louis? I even knew was Louie Melbat
- 7:20The act would tricked me to that I was kidnapped. Is he tall,
- 7:23dark gray eyes and slightly crooked mouth. But yes, yes, that's y.
- 7:28We're talking about the same Louis. I don't understand. Well, it's
- 7:32a long story, honey, and this is no time to tell it stops.
- 7:41Yeah, for one very good reason. Not a gas you know.
- 7:45That's strange. This is Louie's car and there's not enough gas for a two
- 7:46wait trip? What will you do now? We'll leave you here and go
- 7:50look for a phone. I'll call texted you bring my car out here and
- 7:54pick us up. She will leave me. You leave me. You can
- 7:58have my gun for commay. I won't be long o, Please don't be
- 8:01there's no need. You Just sit tight. I'll be back as fast as
- 8:05I can. I tried just long up the road for half a mile before
- 8:15I found a house and an irate farmer in a night chaired whose bad temper
- 8:18disappeared when I waved a couple of five spots under his nose. He eventually
- 8:24led me to the phone and I dialed my apartment. Hello, thanks Nik,
- 8:37relaxed, honey, everything's okay. Oh, thank heaven. I've been
- 8:41sitting here going quietly crazy. Now, got Marie with me, but we
- 8:45run out of gas. When you bring the car out and pick us up
- 8:48for sure directions? Thanks? What's the matter? Somebody come in and have
- 8:54your pardon? Thanks? Are you all right? No? Thanks? He
- 9:01oh? Hello, Hello, mister Knight. Who's that? This is Haroun.
- 9:09We have your American girl. She is quite safe at the moment.
- 9:13She may have a headache when she wakes up, but it will pass if
- 9:16you hurt her. Knight, No one will be hurt so long as you
- 9:20are as sensible. What do you mean by that? It is quite simple.
- 9:24You have a girl, We have a girl. You want the one
- 9:28we have, We want the one you have. I don't get it.
- 9:33I think you do. We want Marie to spray back. If you want
- 9:39to see your friend texts alive, we will return to us the French girl.
- 9:43If not, her son is very anxious to practice some of his peculiar
- 9:48talents. Hello, mister Knight, are you're still there? Yeah, I'm
- 9:56still here. The exchange will be made at nine to night. My word
- 10:00that the American girl will not be harmed in any way before then. We
- 10:03will meet you at the crossroads on the main highway, ten miles north of
- 10:07the house. Is that clear? It's clear till nine then, mister Knight.
- 10:15I put the receiver down and just staid looking at it. I felt
- 10:20as though I'd been kicked in the stomach by a specially vicious mule. The
- 10:24thought of texts on that dagger happy hassan was the stuff that nightmares were made
- 10:28off. Then I went back to the old farmer and found he had some
- 10:33spare petrol, bought it from him and half an hour later, the car
- 10:37was ready to move again. Then I told Marie what had happened. She
- 10:41sat staring ahead of her for a few minutes and turned to me. Of
- 10:46course, Niki, you must take me back. No, there must be
- 10:48another way, but they are very sorry. There would be nois a week,
- 10:54I tell it, there must be. We We can't just have you
- 11:05gone mad? Oh no, I just had an idea. Where do you
- 11:09think they'll take text back to the house? I suppose if you were run,
- 11:13where would be the last place you'd expect to find us? You and
- 11:16me? Why? I mean go back to the house. No, why
- 11:22not? There's only Louie and Blant, the guy from the gate. I
- 11:26think I can take care of them. Then we sit tight and wait for
- 11:28Harun and Hassan to bring texts along. They won't suspect a thing. They'll
- 11:31walk through the doors straight into my gun. Very Oddcious, that's the way
- 11:37it was a one baby, Very well. It is a better way than
- 11:43to surrender timeley. Oh, that's my girl. Hold on her, yashmack.
- 11:46Here we go, all right, Keep beside me, Marie. I
- 12:16am kind, I'm anet o that ye sure? I have to have to
- 12:22get into this place again. I'm not going over that wall. I think
- 12:26a couple of sticks of dynam I can blow it down. It's very quiet.
- 12:35There's a start from the house. Careful now, but almost at the
- 12:41door. It's still open. Is that not strange? Yeah, come on,
- 12:54glad as you can. We'll come back. Mister Night, don't move
- 13:03night. The girl gets a bullet which the light on bloc. Wow,
- 13:11looks like we got a reception committee. Exactly, mister Knight. The rob
- 13:15your gun blizze. Thank god. We counted on your being a clever man,
- 13:22mister Knight. If you had not been, we might have been in
- 13:26trouble. But we had to have a clever man, one would react the
- 13:30right way. Then we got you react the right way. So howing was
- 13:33a plant? Huh? Yes, mister Knight, the whole thing a perfectly
- 13:37planned trap. A chess came in excelsis with you as the poet. What's
- 13:41the next move? The next move is to wait, mister Knight, for
- 13:46the Prince to prince. But of course her run is the prince now and
- 13:52he will hand you over to the police for the murder of his brother.
- 14:09Welcome back. I'm always a little reminded of the Battle of wits seen from
- 14:16Princess Bride. Whenever you see a situation like that with two people trying to
- 14:24help think each other, though I sensed it was common. While now at
- 14:28least most everything is pretty clear, the question will be how all our hard
- 14:33boiled hero get out of this mess. You'll have to join us back here
- 14:39next week for the finale of Nightmare for Night. Now, speaking of finales,
- 14:43it's time for the Amy Bradshaw Matter, Part five from Hollywood. It's
- 14:50time now for Johnny, Johnny, Amy, it's one. I am anything
- 14:58the matter? Yes? Can you come over right away? Sure? Your
- 15:00apartment? No, I'm in my dressing room with the Criterion Theater at one
- 15:03o'clock. Amy. This a policeman assigned to you. Is he with you?
- 15:05No? What? I went out the back way. I came over
- 15:09here alone. Why he's supposed to be protecting you? Johnny. I can't
- 15:13explain, no, but I think I finally know who's been trying to kill
- 15:15me. I want to talk to you right away over here. Hurry,
- 15:18please, hurry tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures
- 15:30of the Man with the action packed expense account America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator as
- 15:35Turley Johnny Doller, New York City Expense Accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Doller
- 15:48to the home office Northwestern Indemnity Alliance, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is
- 15:54an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the Amy Bradshaw matter. Expensive count
- 16:00at him twelve five dollars taxi from my hotel to the Criterion Theater on West
- 16:04forty four. Two bucks for the fair, three bucks for getting me there
- 16:07in five minutes. Amy had sounded plenty scared over the phone. The cab
- 16:12skidded to a stop in front. I caught a glimpse of somebody at the
- 16:15other corner of the theater. It looked like Porter Kane. I couldn't be
- 16:19sure, and I didn't have time to find out right now. Backstage,
- 16:23it was quite dark and I had to feel my way through. The shot
- 16:27came from the direction of Amy's dressing room. Mike Pomeroy, the agent was
- 16:33lying on the floor dead. There was a gun on the floor too,
- 16:37just inside the door. What happened to Amy? Amy? Stop it tell
- 16:42me what happened? The shot came from the door, ran outside the dressing
- 16:51room, across the stage into the alley, and went in sight back inside,
- 16:55I found a light switch. So I phoned Elson tell at police headquarters,
- 16:59told him what had happened. Amy was quiet. Now, Amy,
- 17:03Look, look, I know it's tough for you to talk right now,
- 17:06but you've got to try and tell me. I know. I left in
- 17:11midnight. Mike called me at my apartment. He said he wanted to talk
- 17:17to me about something important. His office is nearby, and he asked me
- 17:21to beat him here in my dressing room. So I came over right away.
- 17:25Go on, Mike and I started talking. Suddenly I saw the door
- 17:30opening, a crack, A hand with a gun. Mike, Mike,
- 17:37easy, easy, Mike, So dude. He doved between me and the
- 17:45door and collected the slug. He fell against the door and it slammed on
- 17:52The hand gun dropped and the next thing I remember, you were in the
- 18:00You didn't see who was holding the gun, No, just the hand.
- 18:03Amy. There was something on one of the fingers that I recognized, a
- 18:11large signet ring. Yes, sir, yeah, it belonged to the guy
- 18:18out on the sidewalk. Porter cane. We will continue with the Bradshaw matter

- 20:40Grand Central Station, New York City. Lieutenant sent Ella arrived at Amy's
- 20:48dressing room and Amy repeated a story to him. He sent a couple of
- 20:52his boys out to pick up port A Cane. Alan, Amy and I
- 20:55went down to headquarters. We left her in one room while we went into
- 20:57another to question Cane, who had been picked up at his apartment. See
- 21:00here, Lieutenant, I don't know what this is all about, but I
- 21:03certainly object to being routed out hole it. Kane, you know why you're
- 21:07down here? I certainly do not. You don't know that Mike Pomeroy's dead
- 21:10and Amy's agent? Really? Really, I never did like that. Chap
- 21:15quite an insensitive person, while he's real insensitive. Now Kane, he's dead.
- 21:18How did it happen? Mike was shot by mistake, The real target
- 21:21was Amy good heavens? No, when's the last time you saw Amy?
- 21:23The night before last, I spoke to her briefly after the show. I
- 21:26haven't talked her on the telephone. No, you're lying her apartment about eleven
- 21:30PM. I was there, all right. I did telephone her. I
- 21:34suggested she meet me somewhere. I told her I'd wait for her outside her
- 21:37apart go on. I saw her come out later by the alley, so
- 21:41I followed her to the theater, thinking she meant for us to talk there,
- 21:45But then I heard a shot. So you admit being in the vicinity.
- 21:48Oh, yes, But I definitely did not go into the theater,
- 21:51didn't she Kane? Amy got a look at the hand holding the gun.
- 21:56There was a ring on one of the fingers. Ring. You're a ring.
- 21:57She's completely mistaken. It's a very distinctive ring. It's not one that
- 22:02anybody'd be mistaken about. See here, Lieutenant. All of this wild supposition
- 22:06is based on the assumption that I had a motive for wanting to kill Amy.
- 22:08You told me what your motive was when I talked to you last evening
- 22:11in your apartment. What do you mean? I asked you, what you
- 22:14do if you wanted something for your collection and couldn't get it. You told
- 22:17me a story about what happened when you were just a kid, nine years
- 22:18old. But I say, the kid had a lollipop you wanted. He
- 22:22wouldn't give it to you, so you smashed it. And that's what you
- 22:25were trying to do tonight in Amy's dressing room. You couldn't have her,
- 22:29so you tried to smash her. There wasn't much point in my hanging around,
- 22:38so I got else and tell us permission to take Amy back to her
- 22:41apartment. We could wait there for any new developments. Amy didn't say a
- 22:45word all the way. When we got there. She sat in a chair
- 22:48staring at the wall. When she finally spoke, it was more like she
- 22:52was talking to herself. He's dead, Amy, he's dead because of me.
- 22:59Stop talking that way. Mike Pomeroy jumped in the way of a bullet.
- 23:03If he hadn't, you'd be dead. Stop it, Amy, Johnny,
- 23:10Yeah, I think you think. What? Oh, just a minute,
- 23:15I'll get it. It was Alison Teller down a police headquarters. When
- 23:21he finished talking, I didn't say anything. There wasn't anything to say.
- 23:26After I hung up. I stood there a moment, staring out the window,
- 23:29and it started to rain. I felt old and tired and empty and
- 23:33sick. I went back into the other room again. Amy was sitting there
- 23:38looking at me. Johnny, Amy, is that car for me? No?
- 23:47Who was it? The tenant, sin teller? Oh? The gun
- 23:52that killed Mike Pomeroy, There were no fingerprints on it. You said you
- 23:57saw a bare hand with a ring on it holding the gun. A bare
- 24:02hand would have left fingerprints. You killed him, didn't you. Yes,
- 24:07Johnny, the attempts on your life, you faked them, didn't you,
- 24:10to convince people you were in danger so you could kill Pomeroy? And we
- 24:12think the shot was intended for you. Why? Amy, You know why?
- 24:21Yeah? I guess you loved Mike. You knew he was growing away
- 24:26from you so fast, so very fast. You saw him get interested in
- 24:30a younger actress. You knew she was taking your place with him. Mike,
- 24:37I was dead. I couldn't stand that. I really couldn't. So
- 24:45I started making it look like I was in danger. It wasn't very hard,
- 24:49Johnny. I'm a good actress. Yeah. After a while, I
- 24:53almost began to believe I was in danger. Something was after me, was
- 24:59hunting me. It finally caught up with me, and I did what I
- 25:06did. What jobs is the hunted Johnny? And which is the hunted?
- 25:14Amy? Yes? I think one of lieutenants in Teller's Men is waiting for
- 25:21you out in the hall. All right, just one thing, Johnny,
- 25:29What is it? I'll need something now, something. Don't forget me,
- 25:37Johnny, give me that that you can count on. Amy. She walked
- 25:55out of the room and she didn't look back. I'm glad she didn't.

- 29:00speaking welcome back. Part of me really wanted this to have a better outcome,
- 29:32just to make all of the Giant Animals commercials worth it. It's someone
- 29:38said that this ends up being all a set up to a really dumb murder
- 29:44plot by Amy Branshaw, because not only do you have the gun with no
- 29:51prance, you also have the issue of a powder residue, which if he
- 29:55wasn't wearing glove seed to have it, and then trajectory, and the sad
- 30:00part is we do have another week of giant stuffed animals to go through,
- 30:04so all right, well, on a four positive note, we do turn
- 30:08to listener comments and feedback, and we begin with a comment from Laurie,
- 30:15who says, I am not sure that I really love Bob Bailey's Johnny Dollar,
- 30:19but I do enjoy hearing him since Let George Do It is ended,
- 30:23I always liked his characterization, and I guess I've let that spill over into
- 30:30his Johnny Dollar. I keep expecting Brooksie to pop up, and I missed
- 30:33the music from the half hour Johnny Dollar shows. I have to say it's
- 30:38a somewhat interesting comment, and I guess kind of shows an inner an effect
- 30:47of having a program where we played First of all, we played Let George
- 30:53Do It first, so people are heard Bob Bailey in this other role,
- 30:56and we also heard one hundred and fifty plus episodes of Yours Truly Johnny Doller
- 31:03prior to Bob Bailey coming on in the role, which gives some more context.
- 31:11Laurie goes on to say, since I've caught up completely with you.
- 31:15I've been going back and listening to some of the other podcast I used to
- 31:19when there's nothing new on yours, and I find that I miss your little
- 31:22notes at the beginning and the end. I ain't find myself wondering what you
- 31:26would say about a particular episode. Thanks well, thanks so much. I
- 31:30appreciate I appreciate you listening, and glad to glad to enjoy the show.
- 31:36And then we have this comment from Bobby who says Bob Bailey was the best
- 31:41Johnny Dowler, Larry, you got a couple of differing opinions. Then Kim
- 31:48emails in a comment on the McCoy it really is a shame that the McCoy
- 31:52wasn't picked up. It could have been a real blockbuster. It is especially
- 31:56sad because its failure was at least in part by the communist witch hunt of
- 32:00the fifties catching Howard Duffinis. There, more often than not, charges made
- 32:05by McCarthy's community committee proved eventually to be untrue. The process ruined many a
- 32:12promising career in Hollywood. Well, just for our listeners, I want to
- 32:16kind of clarify a little of the history. McCarthy, whatever you want to
- 32:22say about McCarthy's committee, it didn't have anything to do with going on going
- 32:27on in Hollywood. The House on American Affairs Committee, on American Activities Committee
- 32:35had a little bit to do with it. McCarthy's committee was in the Senate
- 32:39and his efforts were much more were concerned with infiltration into communists into the federal
- 32:47government. What happened to Howard Duff was actually, at the time that there
- 32:52was this concern going on, an anti communist newspaper put out a booklet called
- 33:00Red Channels. In it, they implied, but didn't specifically, accuse several
- 33:07members of the Hollywood community of being Communists. The damage to Doff's career was
- 33:15pretty pretty short term if you look at his filmography on IMDb nineteen fifty two
- 33:22and fifty one or dry years. But after that pretty much his movie and
- 33:30television career gets back in line. And I had one listener, Joan who
- 33:37mentioned the series he started with Ida Lupimo at the end of the fifties nineteen
- 33:44fifty seven fifty eight, Mister Adams and Eve, where he played the where
- 33:52he played the lead role in a hut with a real life wife. At
- 33:59the time Lupino, so his career was not majorly damaged. It was kind
- 34:04of just this one spot at the time that he was auditioning for the McCoy.
- 34:09It was a very brief period for Diffe and he of course would go
- 34:14on to recover and would most famously star He played, of course Sam Spade,
- 34:20but he played another Sam and all the way into the nineteen sixties with
- 34:24his role on Felony Squad. So long term, this was more a blip
- 34:30on his radar screen than something that ruined his career. So all right,
- 34:36well that will actually do it for today. We will be back on Monday
- 34:43with another episode of Yours Truly Johnny Doller, and then join us back here
- 34:45Friday as we wrap up Nightmare for Night and tomorrow we'll be bringing you the
