Speaker 3: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, missus Carl Lee with my co
0:55
Speaker 3: host Hollis Lewis, Hello, Hello, and Lisa Odie Hello. And
1:00
Speaker 3: Lisa is going to introduce a individual on the show
1:06
Speaker 3: today that we are privileged to have her here, and
1:12
Speaker 3: I'm excited to just kind of hear some of the
1:15
Speaker 3: things that some of the answers to some of the
1:17
Speaker 3: questions that we have. I can't wait, So Lisa, Yes,
1:21
Speaker 3: go ahead and introduce her.
1:22
Speaker 4: I guests, please, thank you so much, carl So, I
1:25
Speaker 4: would like to introduce our honorable guest on the podcast tonight.
1:29
Speaker 4: She has served as the first female mayor of Charleston,
1:33
Speaker 4: West Virginia since January twenty nineteen. She has served our
1:37
Speaker 4: city with distinction during her tenure, and we are beyond
1:40
Speaker 4: excited to have her with us tonight. Proudly introducing Mayor
1:45
Speaker 4: Amy Schuler Goodwin.
1:46
Speaker 5: Hey, that reminds me of like you ever listen to
1:50
Speaker 5: the podcast SmartLess with Jason Bateman where they do like guests,
1:54
Speaker 5: but they don't tell you who it is, but they
1:55
Speaker 5: give you a little bit of background.
1:56
Speaker 6: That's kind I felt like that.
1:57
Speaker 3: I was did you like it?
1:59
Speaker 6: Who is it going to be?
2:03
Speaker 7: I love it so so before because I do know,
2:08
Speaker 7: I do know that, uh, Hollis and Lisa, I know,
2:12
Speaker 7: have a ton of questions for you.
2:14
Speaker 3: My question, my my off the top question was like
2:19
Speaker 3: when they brought they brought your name up, and so
2:21
Speaker 3: I'm like thinking in my mind, like, Okay, that'd be
2:25
Speaker 3: a great guess, but you know, like I'm not really
2:27
Speaker 3: sure yet, you know not and I know you, but
2:29
Speaker 3: I wouldn't like, you know, because some people don't really
2:32
Speaker 3: they don't want to do this. You know, that didn't cross.
2:39
Speaker 3: But then like the moment, like the moment that I
2:41
Speaker 3: saw you, it was like like, oh, this is an
2:44
Speaker 3: old friend of mine, you know. I mean, you've come
2:47
Speaker 3: across like you're It's totally different than I think what
2:52
Speaker 3: people who may not know you have never been around you.
2:54
Speaker 3: I think your personality and how you come across to
2:59
Speaker 3: just people is actually amazing.
3:01
Speaker 6: It's sweet.
3:02
Speaker 5: It's a wheeling in me. I think it's a little
3:05
Speaker 5: bit of a wheeling girl in me. Well, I will
3:07
Speaker 5: say this to you, though, girl. When I was when
3:09
Speaker 5: I was getting in my I like to say my
3:11
Speaker 5: big girl jobs. I remember somebody saying to me long ago,
3:16
Speaker 5: you need to act a little bit more serious. You
3:17
Speaker 5: need to be a little bit more put together. You
3:19
Speaker 5: need to you're at a nine, you need to be
3:20
Speaker 5: at a four. Maybe like tone it down a little bit.
3:23
Speaker 5: And I will admit in my younger years, in my twenties,
3:26
Speaker 5: I listened to especially women of influence, and thought, okay,
3:30
Speaker 5: she's I respect her and I like her, so I
3:32
Speaker 5: probably should listen to it. And it was the most
3:34
Speaker 5: uncomfortable time in my life when I took it from
3:37
Speaker 5: a nine to a four, because that's just not simply
3:40
Speaker 5: who I am. I tried to be somebody who I
3:42
Speaker 5: was not because I thought it would fit the professional,
3:46
Speaker 5: the leadership mold.
3:47
Speaker 6: Because there are so few.
3:48
Speaker 5: Women in our purview that I latched on to the
3:52
Speaker 5: women who were in front of me, a very small crowd,
3:56
Speaker 5: and I messed up for a very long period of time.
3:58
Speaker 6: And so now I act.
4:00
Speaker 5: Somebody got me a portrait that was done and at
4:02
Speaker 5: the bottom it says, I don't need to turn it.
4:04
Speaker 5: It was a phrase that I used to say, I
4:06
Speaker 5: don't need to turn it down, you need to turn
4:07
Speaker 5: it up perfect. Yeah, So so I appreciate that. I
4:12
Speaker 5: really try to be authentic. I'm sure my personality isn't
4:16
Speaker 5: for everybody, but this is actually who I am and
4:19
Speaker 5: who I've grown to be.
4:22
Speaker 3: What's interesting to me about that, you know, being being
4:25
Speaker 3: an athlete in Hollists and Lisa you you you both
4:28
Speaker 3: probably can relate to this too. For the most part,
4:32
Speaker 3: I think people tend to look at you and judge
4:36
Speaker 3: you sometimes by the way that you you you look,
4:40
Speaker 3: your mannerisms, all of those kinds of things. The moment
4:44
Speaker 3: that I saw you in the moment that you walked
4:46
Speaker 3: in the door, there was there was this genuine, friendly,
4:52
Speaker 3: outgoing kind of person that there's no way, I don't
4:56
Speaker 3: know how anybody could.
4:57
Speaker 6: Even you're making me feel good.
5:01
Speaker 4: She's starting to blush.
5:06
Speaker 3: Hard.
5:06
Speaker 6: My kids are listening.
5:08
Speaker 3: I'm an easy person, and I think Hollis is probably
5:10
Speaker 3: an easy person that when you look at it sometimes
5:12
Speaker 3: you can like there's something about him. I don't like.
5:16
Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying, Hollis at least are two people.
5:18
Speaker 5: And this is a compliment when I say this, they're
5:20
Speaker 5: easy to love.
5:22
Speaker 3: I appreciate that. I'm still I'm still working on Holland
5:27
Speaker 3: I'm still at least.
5:30
Speaker 6: They're easy people to love.
5:31
Speaker 3: Now, Mayor, you've enduring your administration. You really, you know,
5:37
Speaker 3: revitalize Charleston. You know, a far as sports is concerned
5:40
Speaker 3: at high level. So this week we have US cycling
5:45
Speaker 3: back in Charleston. Why is this an event in particular?
5:48
Speaker 3: Why is this important to Charleston.
5:50
Speaker 5: There are a lot of things that we can talk about.
5:51
Speaker 5: There are sports. Really why it's important to Charleston. Listen,
5:54
Speaker 5: It is not lost on me. Uh, the excitement, the
5:59
Speaker 5: national and internet, national recognition, that we get also, but
6:02
Speaker 5: let me not deceive you. I also you know, before
6:05
Speaker 5: I was mayor, I was the Commissioner of Tourism for
6:08
Speaker 5: the State of West Virginia. Tourism people aren't the fun people.
6:11
Speaker 5: We're the money people, and so the return on investment
6:14
Speaker 5: that we receive, it's the reason why you know, I'm
6:17
Speaker 5: such an advocate as the commissioner of ben Slango is
6:20
Speaker 5: as well for the Capital Sports Complex. I grew up
6:22
Speaker 5: in a sports family. I played every single sport available
6:25
Speaker 5: to women, and I played on the men's golf team
6:27
Speaker 5: growing up because it is number one. It's not just
6:31
Speaker 5: for body, it's for brain. But now you know, growing
6:35
Speaker 5: growing so growing up in a household, that's that's what
6:38
Speaker 5: we did. I mean, yes, we prioritized academics, but we
6:43
Speaker 5: went to the schools to play, and we went to
6:45
Speaker 5: certain schools so we could compete and compete at a
6:48
Speaker 5: very high level. I raised two boys, and one of
6:51
Speaker 5: my boys is Delegate. Well knows because he was many
6:55
Speaker 5: times there at the hockey tournaments. Every night, weekend and holiday,
7:00
Speaker 5: we would be out on the road traveling with them.
7:02
Speaker 5: Sports is important. It's not just important for individuals. It's
7:04
Speaker 5: important for a community, because it's important to be involved
7:07
Speaker 5: in something. Why is USA Cycling important? Any mayor in
7:12
Speaker 5: any city across the country would say, you mean to
7:15
Speaker 5: tell me, I'm going to get positive recognition nationally and
7:18
Speaker 5: internationally for my city, get an unbelievable return on investment
7:23
Speaker 5: for my hotels. So for our hotels, bars, restaurants, shops.
7:28
Speaker 6: I mean.
7:28
Speaker 5: I was at bucking Bet today buying my you know,
7:31
Speaker 5: Bike City USA T shirt. I went to Black Sheep
7:34
Speaker 5: to get a rep for lunch because I was running
7:35
Speaker 5: late to another meeting.
7:37
Speaker 6: If you could give.
7:38
Speaker 5: That to any mayor in any city, they say yes, please,
7:41
Speaker 5: thank you, and please shut the door on your way out.
7:43
Speaker 6: This is mine now.
7:44
Speaker 5: By the way, it's competitive. I want people to know
7:46
Speaker 5: that as well. It wasn't just a hey, this sounds
7:49
Speaker 5: like a really great thing for us.
7:51
Speaker 6: It's it's a battle.
7:52
Speaker 5: This isn't this you know, it's just like the basketball
7:55
Speaker 5: tournaments or baseball tournaments. This isn't fun in games. This
7:58
Speaker 5: is what are you going to give me to bring
8:00
Speaker 5: my tournament to you? And what am I going to
8:02
Speaker 5: get in return?
8:03
Speaker 6: USA?
8:04
Speaker 5: You know, we started with table tennis and we got
8:06
Speaker 5: a great relationship with USA National Sports right, So it
8:09
Speaker 5: went table tennis, USA Volleyball, and those relationships spun out
8:14
Speaker 5: into USA Cycling and an amazing team that we have
8:17
Speaker 5: here in the city of Charleston. When we were afforded
8:19
Speaker 5: this opportunity, I will be honest, the most I ever
8:22
Speaker 5: watched out of any USA Cycling was when we started
8:26
Speaker 5: to talk about going out for the bid.
8:27
Speaker 6: I think I told you this. I was like, I
8:29
Speaker 6: need to get on the.
8:30
Speaker 5: YouTube, do a little er, let's see what they're doing
8:35
Speaker 5: in their city. But this is what I do know.
8:39
Speaker 5: I found out what was important to them.
8:41
Speaker 6: It's roads.
8:42
Speaker 5: What was important to them were making sure that you
8:45
Speaker 5: had the guy from public Works who would go on
8:47
Speaker 5: the roads and change every grate from this way to
8:50
Speaker 5: this way. The storm dreams because tires that goes. It
8:53
Speaker 5: was the details of making sure that we had not
8:57
Speaker 5: just the you know, the the great city in our
9:00
Speaker 5: great vibe, but also that we had uh the operational
9:04
Speaker 5: support that we could go out after it. And when
9:06
Speaker 5: they you know, I really didn't know all that it
9:09
Speaker 5: was all that it took, but.
9:11
Speaker 6: It was a it was a battle.
9:13
Speaker 5: I mean, it was a battle for other, you know,
9:15
Speaker 5: cities who really wanted this, so I you know, I
9:18
Speaker 5: we joke in the you know, senior staff this morning
9:20
Speaker 5: we were talking about the traffic calls that we were
9:22
Speaker 5: coming and that they were talking about MAP this morning
9:24
Speaker 5: and what.
9:25
Speaker 6: A great app is for the city.
9:27
Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a it's an ebb and flow and everybody
9:29
Speaker 5: has to bend.
9:30
Speaker 6: It is not it is.
9:31
Speaker 5: When you bring in an event like this, everybody has
9:35
Speaker 5: to participate for it to work. And that, by the way,
9:38
Speaker 5: means the citizens who are not coming to the races,
9:41
Speaker 5: who are not watching it, who don't give one whip
9:44
Speaker 5: stitch about it, but it will impact them because you're
9:47
Speaker 5: going to be tardy to work or you're going to
9:49
Speaker 5: have to go a different direction.
9:52
Speaker 4: So you know, it's a small inconvenience for the payoff
9:56
Speaker 4: in the long run.
9:58
Speaker 3: Charlsie Is sure has like worldwide implications, right we had,
10:03
Speaker 3: you know, as far as we had this event last
10:05
Speaker 3: year and had Olympic indications.
10:06
Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean so, Kristen Faulkner, if anybody watched the Olympics,
10:10
Speaker 5: we did. And the good thing about this, by the way,
10:13
Speaker 5: this is a five year contract.
10:15
Speaker 6: So this wasn't a hey, we're going to come this
10:17
Speaker 6: year and then.
10:18
Speaker 5: We're gonna you know, run out of the Yes, big
10:21
Speaker 5: five year commitment for us, by the way, and that's
10:23
Speaker 5: big for us. I mean, that's committing our resources for
10:25
Speaker 5: the next five years.
10:26
Speaker 6: Can we do it? Can we afford to do it?
10:29
Speaker 5: And so what is so with the benefit for us
10:32
Speaker 5: is not only do we get one Olympic cycle, we
10:34
Speaker 5: get two Olympic cycles. So our time trials were the
10:38
Speaker 5: qualifier for the Olympics. So the person who won the
10:41
Speaker 5: time trials had that ticket to Paris. Now that's big city.
10:46
Speaker 4: Right, that is that's pretty amazing.
10:47
Speaker 5: So we talk about Kristin Faulkner and as you watched
10:50
Speaker 5: her with the Eiffel Tower in the background flying underneath
10:54
Speaker 5: and winning the road race a race and by the way,
10:57
Speaker 5: she was not originally signed up to ride in but
11:00
Speaker 5: at the last minute said I feel good today and
11:03
Speaker 5: I'm gonna go at a separate event. Wasn't even an
11:06
Speaker 5: event that she initially thought that she had the best
11:10
Speaker 5: chance of winning, but she did. And so you know
11:14
Speaker 5: that the road to the Olympics runs through Charleston, West Virginia.
11:18
Speaker 6: Take it any day.
11:20
Speaker 4: And what's really cool about this, too, Mayor, is is
11:23
Speaker 4: that it's growing, right. So this is the second year
11:25
Speaker 4: for the event in Charleston. I recently saw during a
11:29
Speaker 4: presser Matthew Sutton, your your chief of staff. He was
11:33
Speaker 4: giving some information, you know, to to the press about
11:36
Speaker 4: added activities this year. So it's it's surrounding the cycling event.
11:41
Speaker 4: So what are some of the added events that have tacked.
11:44
Speaker 4: I know probably live on the levee. That's new, right,
11:46
Speaker 4: you added a new extra show.
11:47
Speaker 5: We added an extra show, and we're going to do
11:49
Speaker 5: it this Friday, So we're really excited about doing that.
11:52
Speaker 5: But I will say the biggest, the biggest event that
11:55
Speaker 5: we added this year was the para cycling. So this morning,
12:00
Speaker 5: if you were out on the streets of Charleston, you
12:02
Speaker 5: watched athletes who were amputees. You watch athletes that were blind,
12:07
Speaker 5: who were hearing impaired, who had other exceptionalities. So I
12:11
Speaker 5: challenge anyone uh to do the work and the climb
12:14
Speaker 5: that it takes to compete on that level with exceptionalities.
12:20
Speaker 6: Come and get you some. It's hard to do.
12:22
Speaker 3: Now with those athletes with those is this Olympic implications as.
12:25
Speaker 5: Well, not for those athletes, but it's you know what
12:29
Speaker 5: is so great about USA Cycling and competing is it
12:32
Speaker 5: takes you to the next level and qualifying for other
12:35
Speaker 5: events and so you know, here here's the other things,
12:38
Speaker 5: which you know, Carl, Carl, I'm fifty for and while
12:45
Speaker 5: I you know, I do my best and I feel
12:48
Speaker 5: like I am paying attention. Last year when I got
12:52
Speaker 5: up on the podium to give the award medals to
12:54
Speaker 5: some of the young cyclists, when they, you know, they're
12:58
Speaker 5: on these bikes and they're in their uniform and they've
13:00
Speaker 5: got their gear on, they got their helmets, they've got
13:02
Speaker 5: their glasses.
13:03
Speaker 6: You know, next they're ready to go.
13:05
Speaker 5: They come on, they get onto the stage and this
13:08
Speaker 5: young woman, I was floored. Do you think you know
13:11
Speaker 5: braces glass? He'd put on glasses And I said, how
13:15
Speaker 5: was it competing?
13:16
Speaker 6: She said, well, you know it was okay.
13:18
Speaker 5: I just I had school yesterday.
13:21
Speaker 6: And I said to her, honey, how old are you?
13:24
Speaker 5: She said, I'm fourteen, and so we're going to go
13:28
Speaker 5: back with our My mom and my aunt came to
13:31
Speaker 5: and I was just like and I was just like,
13:34
Speaker 5: you are a young one, you are a this is
13:37
Speaker 5: an Olympic athlete. So this fourteen year old, by the way, said.
13:40
Speaker 5: I said to her, as I'm putting the metal, you're
13:43
Speaker 5: coming back. Oh yeah, I'll be back. I'm going to
13:45
Speaker 5: be back because you've got the Olympics. I'm gonna I'm
13:48
Speaker 5: gonna try to be in the Olympics.
13:50
Speaker 6: I was like, what are you saying?
13:52
Speaker 3: Yeah, you know what you're saying.
13:54
Speaker 5: Yes, well she does because you see her on that
13:57
Speaker 5: bike and she knows. And we talked a little bit
13:59
Speaker 5: about this in the green room too. I think that
14:01
Speaker 5: things can be learned and think, I mean, you know,
14:03
Speaker 5: you can just learn it, you can.
14:05
Speaker 6: Be taught it.
14:06
Speaker 5: It probably has something to do with who you are inside,
14:09
Speaker 5: right that that person, that thing, she's got it. All
14:12
Speaker 5: she has to do is get on that bike and
14:14
Speaker 5: you go, oh, I see it, I see what you
14:16
Speaker 5: are shining right there. It comes clear when you watch
14:20
Speaker 5: these athletes compete, they're at a different level. So when
14:23
Speaker 5: we were we were also talking about medical teams, because
14:27
Speaker 5: remember we've got a whole big medical team to thank
14:30
Speaker 5: you to c AMC and all.
14:32
Speaker 6: Of their all of their support.
14:34
Speaker 5: But we were talking about okay, so when a physician said,
14:38
Speaker 5: when do we know when we come in the ropes
14:40
Speaker 5: the gates, When do we know if a cyclist falls,
14:44
Speaker 5: and the USA looked at us like, you don't.
14:48
Speaker 6: Really, oh, but but what if here she falls, We'll
14:51
Speaker 6: let you know.
14:52
Speaker 5: Okay, okay, what if they're really injured, We'll let you
14:54
Speaker 5: know because they do have concussion protocol They have lots
14:56
Speaker 5: of protocols. What he said, I'll give you for an example.
15:00
Speaker 5: We won't give names here of these cyclists, but there
15:03
Speaker 5: is an elite cyclists, male, young male who they talked
15:07
Speaker 5: about when you know, you know, who flipped off his bike,
15:09
Speaker 5: who obviously had broken his thought he had broken his
15:14
Speaker 5: wrist or hand, took all of the skin sorry everybody listening,
15:18
Speaker 5: took his skin off, gone from his knee all the
15:20
Speaker 5: way down to his ankle, completely gone in one and
15:23
Speaker 5: a half parts of his leg. Got back on the cycle,
15:27
Speaker 5: continued to ride, went to his car. By the way,
15:29
Speaker 5: you can't touch your car, your support car, you're not
15:32
Speaker 5: allowed to touch it.
15:34
Speaker 6: There's lots of rules that.
15:35
Speaker 5: Go into this. I'm learning every single day. But he
15:37
Speaker 5: leaned his hand and then said, just make sure it's
15:39
Speaker 5: not broken. They looked at it and said I think
15:43
Speaker 5: you're okay.
15:45
Speaker 6: I think you're okay.
15:47
Speaker 5: And before they could say I think you're okay, he's gone,
15:50
Speaker 5: and he came in second. This is after tumbling, you know,
15:53
Speaker 5: head over teacups. As my mom used to say, these
15:56
Speaker 5: are athletes beyond what we look at. So you think
16:00
Speaker 5: like this was his moment, this was his time in
16:03
Speaker 5: this racis wasn't in Charleston, West Virginia. But these cyclists,
16:07
Speaker 5: as we watched Kristin Faulkner as well crash on national television. Uh,
16:12
Speaker 5: this is a just as you get hit on the
16:15
Speaker 5: football field, just as you get taken down on the courts.
16:17
Speaker 5: This is the way of their life. This is what
16:20
Speaker 5: they train for, This is what they do. This is
16:22
Speaker 5: when I tell people who are thinking about coming, you
16:26
Speaker 5: won't see this unless you're here. This isn't This isn't
16:30
Speaker 5: like a regular you know, hey, we're cyclist. Oh, these
16:34
Speaker 5: are top level cyclists that are true.
16:37
Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think that's a I think that's important too,
16:39
Speaker 3: to throw that athlete on there, because you people want
16:44
Speaker 3: to separate athletes and put him into this thing compartment. Yes,
16:48
Speaker 3: if you're doing something that requires movement, that is I
16:52
Speaker 3: would consider athletic period. You're an athlete. And the thing
16:57
Speaker 3: is with the terrain of this area, you're yes uphill,
17:00
Speaker 3: you go downhill, you go on a round curves. I mean,
17:02
Speaker 3: I was there last year downtown in the speed in
17:05
Speaker 3: which those guys and women are hitting those curves believable,
17:09
Speaker 3: unbelievable making until you go in.
17:12
Speaker 4: Person, don't know how because I wasn't sold on it.
17:15
Speaker 4: I'll I'll be honest, mayor. I thought, oh, bike racing,
17:18
Speaker 4: How excited by? Can that be right? I mean really seriously?
17:22
Speaker 4: And so then my husband and I decided to go
17:24
Speaker 4: check it out and we were just we were stunned
17:26
Speaker 4: in awe when those guys go by. I mean that
17:28
Speaker 4: that the sound, the motion, just all of it. I mean,
17:32
Speaker 4: it is really exciting. I mean, I'm telling you, if
17:35
Speaker 4: you have not attended this event, you really need to
17:37
Speaker 4: give it a shot.
17:38
Speaker 5: So Carl I asked one of the athletes that I said,
17:40
Speaker 5: can you hear us? Can you hear the bells? Can
17:42
Speaker 5: you hear the whistles? Can you hear the screams? The
17:43
Speaker 5: answer is no. I'm completely focused on what I need
17:47
Speaker 5: to do, on my breath, on my feet, on my
17:51
Speaker 5: hands position, and I am taking in everybody around me,
17:55
Speaker 5: beside me, behind me, and in front of me, and
17:57
Speaker 5: what my pace is. I can't hear you. I appreciate
18:00
Speaker 5: it's so nice. Thank you for ringing your cow bells.
18:02
Speaker 6: I appreciate it, but.
18:04
Speaker 5: I'm not listening to you. The thing so that was
18:06
Speaker 5: that was a shock to me, like, oh, well, I'm
18:08
Speaker 5: screaming really loud for you.
18:10
Speaker 6: That's number one.
18:11
Speaker 5: But we had one complaint, one complaint universally from especially
18:15
Speaker 5: our top tier and especially our top mail writer Brandon,
18:21
Speaker 5: who said, when they asked him, what did you think
18:23
Speaker 5: about the course? He said, it is one of the hardest,
18:25
Speaker 5: specially Bridge Road, just one of the hardest courses I've
18:29
Speaker 5: ever done. In fact, it was probably it was probably
18:31
Speaker 5: too hard. It was too hard because you go up
18:34
Speaker 5: and down Bridge Road like it is your job, because oh,
18:37
Speaker 5: by the way, it is.
18:39
Speaker 6: It is, girl, it is your job.
18:41
Speaker 5: And you go up that, you know, nine times, uh,
18:44
Speaker 5: ten times, eleven times as fast as you possibly can.
18:50
Speaker 5: The unbelievable these athletes are. And the other thing, if
18:54
Speaker 5: you try to get an airbnb in town, you can't, like,
18:58
Speaker 5: don't don't even try. You're locked down out why something.
19:01
Speaker 5: I also didn't know they sleep with their bikes. And
19:04
Speaker 5: this is what I mean by saying it that funny visual.
19:07
Speaker 4: Oh, here we go.
19:08
Speaker 5: But before they get into bed and the moment they
19:10
Speaker 5: get up, they're on it right, positioning, loosening up, getting
19:16
Speaker 5: your juices flowing in the morning. And plus these bikes
19:19
Speaker 5: are tens of thousands of dollars. We're not leaving a
19:23
Speaker 5: bike in a trailer. We're not leaving the bike in
19:25
Speaker 5: the back of your car or in the back of
19:27
Speaker 5: a truck.
19:27
Speaker 3: And you didn't go You didn't just go up up
19:29
Speaker 3: the street and buy that bike the custom Let me
19:34
Speaker 3: ask this. So if I'm a spectator, I have I
19:36
Speaker 3: didn't get to go last year. I want to go
19:38
Speaker 3: this year. Where should I set up? Where is like
19:41
Speaker 3: the best spot to see as much as I can see? Yeah?
19:45
Speaker 3: What day?
19:46
Speaker 5: Yeah?
19:46
Speaker 6: Sure? So Lisa brought this up a little bit as well.
19:49
Speaker 5: We're adding things because you only know what you know
19:51
Speaker 5: now we know city Center at slack Plaza, live music,
19:54
Speaker 5: more food, more activities for the littles as well. So Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,
20:00
Speaker 5: well ready, I mean you know tomorrow there'll be there'll
20:03
Speaker 5: be some continuation of the paracycling again. You want to
20:07
Speaker 5: you want to see somebody who has overcome life's most
20:10
Speaker 5: significant challenges. Get out there tomorrow at nine o'clock and
20:13
Speaker 5: watch those time trials up and down the boulevard. Okay,
20:16
Speaker 5: so in the morning starting at nine, go ahead, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
20:20
Speaker 5: Sunday and Monday. You're going to especially on Thursday and Friday,
20:23
Speaker 5: you're gonna want to be at City Center at Slack Plaza.
20:26
Speaker 6: You're going to want to be there as.
20:28
Speaker 5: The cowbells are going and the music is playing and
20:30
Speaker 5: they are zig zanging watching the pace car alone.
20:34
Speaker 6: Yeah, and say too.
20:37
Speaker 5: I'm not one of those girls like, oh no, thank you,
20:39
Speaker 5: I'm in like, let's go. I did it once, I
20:44
Speaker 5: will never do it again. I will eat your shoes
20:46
Speaker 5: and your hat before I do it again.
20:48
Speaker 6: And I'm not assisting.
20:49
Speaker 3: Now, what time on Thursday and Friday should people start
20:51
Speaker 3: thank you? Being well?
20:53
Speaker 6: You know, I hate to I hate to say this early.
20:57
Speaker 5: I mean the music is going to start playing at four,
21:00
Speaker 5: you know, three point thirty four. If you want to
21:02
Speaker 5: have a late you know, or early dinner or super
21:04
Speaker 5: late lunch. The bridge Road is going to be insane
21:08
Speaker 5: on Sunday and all.
21:10
Speaker 3: That's where we were last day.
21:11
Speaker 4: It was it was it was unbelievable. We set up
21:14
Speaker 4: in front of Lolas and it was perfect, sane.
21:16
Speaker 6: But you know what's so cool too.
21:17
Speaker 5: I mean I have to give a shout out to
21:19
Speaker 5: our businesses and I don't know if that's okay on
21:21
Speaker 5: the absolutely, But what is so interesting we These weren't
21:25
Speaker 5: things that we also asked of our businesses.
21:29
Speaker 6: They just did it on their own.
21:31
Speaker 5: Scott Petted at Pettit Jewelry did a custom one of
21:35
Speaker 5: a kind USA Cycling Charleston charm at the jewelry shop.
21:41
Speaker 5: You know Ellen's ice Cream made a Criterium crunch ice cream.
21:46
Speaker 5: You know Button Buck and Betty I bought mine today.
21:49
Speaker 5: You know the Bike City us A T shirts, so
21:52
Speaker 5: small businesses of the Roadie road Beer that that wife
21:56
Speaker 5: and others are Black Sheep are selling.
21:58
Speaker 6: They're in it.
21:59
Speaker 5: Because this is what is so unbelievably cool about our community.
22:03
Speaker 5: Nobody knew last year what we were doing, but they
22:06
Speaker 5: were in And that's what I love about us. We're
22:09
Speaker 5: doing something special for our community. We want to show off.
22:11
Speaker 5: It's kind of like when guests come over, don't take
22:14
Speaker 5: the good plates, wait till everybody eats.
22:16
Speaker 6: Don't take a good plate. Don't take a good plate.
22:19
Speaker 6: Wait till everybody have.
22:20
Speaker 5: You know, we kind of put on fresh flowers on
22:22
Speaker 5: the table and we put on our best. That's what
22:24
Speaker 5: everybody did and what all of our small businesses did,
22:28
Speaker 5: which made it so much easier for us. When we
22:31
Speaker 5: were pitching, we had a group of cyclists, you know,
22:33
Speaker 5: teddy Arnbreckt and Todd Goldman and Jack Hoblitzel who we
22:39
Speaker 5: brought to the meeting. Who and Tim Brady, our CEO
22:42
Speaker 5: of the Convention of Visitors Bureau, who really is a
22:45
Speaker 5: wonderful captain for us in this venture. He brought the
22:48
Speaker 5: guys who ride the roads, Todd Dorcas, Hey, talk to
22:50
Speaker 5: him about talk to him about it. My response was,
22:54
Speaker 5: we'll do anything that you need us to do to
22:56
Speaker 5: make this happen. That was my response, like what do
22:59
Speaker 5: we get? What do you what do you need us
23:01
Speaker 5: to make this happen? Because when I watched Nashville and
23:04
Speaker 5: I'm watching these other cities, I thought.
23:05
Speaker 6: We can do that, right, it can be big boys
23:09
Speaker 6: and girls, We can do it.
23:10
Speaker 3: I know we're running short on time, and I just
23:11
Speaker 3: want to ask. This's like you talked about. We brought
23:13
Speaker 3: us a volleyball us a table to the Junior Olympic boxing.
23:17
Speaker 3: You had that here, we have a tvt we have
23:19
Speaker 3: a strong Man cut, now we have US cycling. So
23:22
Speaker 3: what is Mayor good When's dream event in the basketball
23:26
Speaker 3: tournament too? I forgot to mention that, what's Mayor Goodwin's
23:28
Speaker 3: dream event for Charleston, West Virginia. What if you could
23:32
Speaker 3: just have the magic wand and say hey, we're going
23:34
Speaker 3: to do this, We're going to bring this here. What's
23:36
Speaker 3: what's that event for you?
23:37
Speaker 6: Yeah?
23:38
Speaker 5: So it's actually not an event, It is a movement, Okay.
23:42
Speaker 5: So what I want to see is I want to
23:45
Speaker 5: see little girls and little boys get to compete and
23:49
Speaker 5: play on surfaces and in facilities that other kids and
23:52
Speaker 5: other states get to participated because you know what is
23:57
Speaker 5: not okay, It is not okay. And what I love, love, love,
24:00
Speaker 5: love love. You know, we turfed eleven fields in the
24:03
Speaker 5: past six years. Why is that important? Because when you
24:05
Speaker 5: go and you watch the little Powderpuff girls and you
24:10
Speaker 5: watch them play, they now get to compete on a
24:12
Speaker 5: surface and a playing field that other girls in other
24:15
Speaker 5: states are playing on every single second of every single day.
24:18
Speaker 5: And now they can compete at that level. That's what
24:21
Speaker 5: I want, And so it's not just about the sports complex,
24:23
Speaker 5: it's not just about inspiring young athletes. I was so
24:27
Speaker 5: fortunate in my life to be able to see so
24:29
Speaker 5: many wonderful and powerful athletes in my career watching them play.
24:34
Speaker 5: But I want us to have facilities and opportunities for
24:37
Speaker 5: our kids to be able to think I can do that,
24:40
Speaker 5: to see it, to be it, but actually mean it,
24:42
Speaker 5: not just say it that's a bumper sticker. You know,
24:44
Speaker 5: you got to see it to be it. I want
24:46
Speaker 5: you to be able to play on that surface. I
24:47
Speaker 5: want you to be able to have seventy two volleyball
24:50
Speaker 5: teams game on I want that for our girls so
24:54
Speaker 5: they don't have to travel to Columbus or Pittsburgh or
24:56
Speaker 5: Cincinnati to play with those Have those girls come in
25:00
Speaker 5: play with you here. So well, it's not one event,
25:03
Speaker 5: I mean, you know that's what I want. It is
25:06
Speaker 5: much bigger than one single event.
25:09
Speaker 3: That's awesome, And that's what we would just talk about.
25:12
Speaker 3: Far as facilities you're looking at, So you know I've
25:14
Speaker 3: paid since then track and field at the high school
25:16
Speaker 3: level around the nation, and you're looking at some of
25:18
Speaker 3: these athletes and some of these times that they're running,
25:20
Speaker 3: and it's really it's related to having those facilities so
25:24
Speaker 3: they can you know, get the best out of those
25:25
Speaker 3: youth athletes.
25:26
Speaker 5: That's right, for sure, that's right. It's important. It is
25:28
Speaker 5: important to give them the equipment. And you know, it's
25:31
Speaker 5: Carl and I were talking about as we were coming
25:33
Speaker 5: down from the green room. I still believe that, yeah,
25:37
Speaker 5: there might be, it might be something right in your core,
25:40
Speaker 5: in your gut of who you are and your makeup.
25:43
Speaker 5: But I think giving opportunity and having people like this
25:47
Speaker 5: guy and this guy and this grow in front of
25:49
Speaker 5: them doing things and mentoring them has it's it's important.
25:55
Speaker 5: It's it might be just as important. Just as in Orton.
26:00
Speaker 6: You know, I went home. I had to go.
26:03
Speaker 5: I had to go home and be with my mom
26:06
Speaker 5: over the past couple of days and my dad, who
26:10
Speaker 5: played golf his entire adult adult career and professionally for
26:13
Speaker 5: a little bit, I went to go hit golf balls
26:15
Speaker 5: with him, just to blow.
26:17
Speaker 6: Up some steam.
26:18
Speaker 5: And if I could have my dad standing behind me
26:22
Speaker 5: and mentoring me every single time I went out to
26:25
Speaker 5: play golf, I would be I'd be scratch golfer today,
26:29
Speaker 5: because it does matter who's in your ear. It does
26:32
Speaker 5: matter who's standing behind you. Because I said to him, Dad,
26:34
Speaker 5: I can't, I can't, I can't get this new because
26:37
Speaker 5: it just for my birthday.
26:38
Speaker 6: He got me new clops. I'm the baby of the family.
26:41
Speaker 6: Can you tell me for my dad?
26:43
Speaker 4: For my shirt day? I'm fifty four.
26:45
Speaker 6: My dad's still buying me day.
26:48
Speaker 5: But it does matter to have the right person who
26:51
Speaker 5: cares about you, who cares about your development. And oh,
26:54
Speaker 5: by the way, who's not easy on your right?
26:57
Speaker 6: Why are you standing?
26:58
Speaker 5: Stop going on your haels? Why are you on your hails?
27:00
Speaker 5: Stop getting on your hails? You did it again? Do
27:02
Speaker 5: it again?
27:03
Speaker 6: I mean again.
27:04
Speaker 5: I'm like, okay, guy, the guy behind us is going
27:07
Speaker 5: to be like, why is that old guy being mean
27:09
Speaker 5: to that girl over there? But it does matter. It
27:12
Speaker 5: matters who's around you and who you surround yourself with.
27:15
Speaker 5: But I'm telling this crew, this crew knows better than
27:17
Speaker 5: I even do. But but having you know, having USA
27:21
Speaker 5: Cycling has been monumental for the city of Charleston. That
27:24
Speaker 5: we get it not only this year, but another three
27:26
Speaker 5: years after that and get to watch America's Olympic athletes.
27:32
Speaker 5: And that's what's And drive our economy and be here
27:36
Speaker 5: and love what we do. And oh, by the way,
27:38
Speaker 5: many of them were here last week and the week
27:40
Speaker 5: before be trained and Sam, they were training, and they
27:44
Speaker 5: were there because that's also what's important and for us
27:47
Speaker 5: to be a bike city and to be known as
27:49
Speaker 5: that and something positive. You do this every day in
27:52
Speaker 5: your work, delegate, that you try to push positive for
27:54
Speaker 5: the state of West Virginia. We you know, our chips
27:56
Speaker 5: on our shoulder or this high, this high, this high right,
27:59
Speaker 5: we have about who we are and what we've come from.
28:02
Speaker 6: And I think to have.
28:04
Speaker 5: This, to be able to stick our chest out a
28:07
Speaker 5: little farther and put ours to say our peacock feathers out,
28:10
Speaker 5: makes me very very proud that we get the opportunity
28:13
Speaker 5: to do that.
28:14
Speaker 3: Yes, absolutely, mayor we appreciate you, appreciate it. We may
28:19
Speaker 3: you come back.
28:24
Speaker 4: I hope Mother Nature's kind to the event this week,
28:27
Speaker 4: but let's keep our fingers crossed.
28:28
Speaker 5: Well, I will say to you, if you watch the
28:30
Speaker 5: Criterion last year, it doesn't matter to them.
28:35
Speaker 4: It's probably better training for them, to be honest, right.
28:37
Speaker 6: It doesn't matter to them.
28:39
Speaker 5: They will ride as hard and as fast if it
28:42
Speaker 5: is pouring down sideways because by the way it was,
28:45
Speaker 5: it was it.
28:46
Speaker 6: Was some of the worst conditions. But it's training.
28:48
Speaker 3: It's where I do.
28:49
Speaker 4: That's what they do.
28:50
Speaker 6: That's what they do.
28:51
Speaker 5: Thank you, sir, Thank you so much.
28:55
Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, we'll be right back, all right, catch
28:59

Speaker 3: folks who just like have heard that, like when you
31:04
Speaker 3: when you're an All American, they've just heard it and
31:06
Speaker 3: they don't necessarily know exactly what it means. Can you
31:12
Speaker 3: can you can you give? It means out of all
31:15
Speaker 3: the thousands of athletes that play or participate in the
31:19
Speaker 3: particular sports, all the hundreds of schools that have that sports,
31:23
Speaker 3: that you are one of the best, if not the
31:25
Speaker 3: best athlete in that particular category or sport. So it's
31:30
Speaker 3: really a finite small small athletes within collegiate sports. And
31:35
Speaker 3: you have you have performed, if you've earned the spot
31:38
Speaker 3: of being in the top category, and that is something
31:41
Speaker 3: that nobody can ever take away right away from. Okay,
31:45
Speaker 3: so we go. I just wanted to make sure we
31:47
Speaker 3: got a definition of it. Really, go ahead, Lisa, that
31:51
Speaker 3: is so awesome.
31:52
Speaker 4: I'm so impressed. What is your event actually your specific
31:56
Speaker 4: event that you are good? You know, we're good at
31:59
Speaker 4: a run.
31:59
Speaker 10: The six d, the one hundred, the two hundred, the
32:03
Speaker 10: four hundred four one.
32:05
Speaker 3: And the four four Okay, Now the sixty meter, that's
32:07
Speaker 3: that's the indoor speaking to the speaking to the Yeah.
32:09
Speaker 4: So the sixty out of indoors listening, I can't breath.
32:13
Speaker 3: So far as the All American distinction, that was All
32:16
Speaker 3: American for the indoor track season, Am I correct? Yes,
32:19
Speaker 3: that's a sixty yeah. So, and just for those who
32:22
Speaker 3: don't know, you have an indoor and outdoor season as
32:24
Speaker 3: far as track can feel is concerned. Okay, and you
32:28
Speaker 3: just wrapped up your sophomore season, and I think we
32:30
Speaker 3: did pretty well at the conference meeting in my correct,
32:33
Speaker 3: So what happened there?
32:36
Speaker 10: I broke the record in the two hundred, and we
32:38
Speaker 10: broke the record in the four x one in the four.
32:41
Speaker 6: X four, my goodness.
32:43
Speaker 3: And I think the All Regional team just came out.
32:45
Speaker 3: You made All Regional team. So I was I was
32:49
Speaker 3: a I was a I was a track guy and
32:52
Speaker 3: ran track, but I was never an elite runner. You know.
32:56
Speaker 3: It didn't like I wasn't going to ever win one
32:58
Speaker 3: hundred or two hundred. Give me a little bit of
33:03
Speaker 3: background on like what did you do? Was there anything
33:08
Speaker 3: specifically that you do or did that helped you get
33:12
Speaker 3: to this place and or are you just is this
33:18
Speaker 3: just a talent that you have discovered?
33:21
Speaker 10: Well, I started running track when I was seven. I
33:24
Speaker 10: ran with the Capital City Striter and then after that
33:28
Speaker 10: I started running in middle school and then carried on
33:31
Speaker 10: too high school. And then they had started a track
33:34
Speaker 10: program at State, and I didn't want to go too
33:36
Speaker 10: far from home yet, so I committed there. And then
33:39
Speaker 10: my freshman year didn't go the way I wanted it
33:42
Speaker 10: to go. So then I trained all summer so my
33:44
Speaker 10: sophomore year could go the way I wanted it to be.
33:48
Speaker 3: Go ahead, Hollis now as far as that. So you
33:52
Speaker 3: spent the first two years at West Virginia State University. Again,
33:55
Speaker 3: you've had a monumental success, particularly in the emphasy of
33:59
Speaker 3: a newly resurrected track program. But you are hitting the
34:05
Speaker 3: transfer portal, as it were, and a lot of the
34:07
Speaker 3: kids are doing uh these days what again? And you
34:11
Speaker 3: can go as far as you want into it. What
34:13
Speaker 3: drove that decision to uh to take your talents elsewhere?
34:17
Speaker 10: Well, I kind of wanted to leave anyways because it
34:21
Speaker 10: doesn't really have like we don't have a track, so
34:25
Speaker 10: and I didn't see it as getting a track anytime soon.
34:28
Speaker 10: By the time we got a track, I'd probably be
34:29
Speaker 10: out of college. So it's like it's not really worth it.
34:32
Speaker 4: That's pretty important.
34:33
Speaker 3: Facilities, Yeah, facilities, and again so it came down to facilities.
34:38
Speaker 10: Yeah, facilities, and then like money, they had cut our
34:41
Speaker 10: scholarship money, which I mean that wouldn't have affected me
34:44
Speaker 10: because I'm an estate student. It was like everybody I
34:46
Speaker 10: ran track with from my freshman year with leaving and
34:50
Speaker 10: I would have been with a whole new team.
34:52
Speaker 3: So it's like, okay, so was that part of like
34:56
Speaker 3: the four by four by one or four x two
34:59
Speaker 3: that with that have impacted those teams?
35:01
Speaker 10: Yeah, both teams are gone.
35:03
Speaker 3: Wow. And as far as that, like you know, in
35:06
Speaker 3: track and field, because I think we pretty much like
35:08
Speaker 3: West Virginia State University, that is, we dominated far as
35:12
Speaker 3: you know, our conference meet as far as the athletes
35:15
Speaker 3: that we had, but because we don't have a large number,
35:18
Speaker 3: it was hard for to get a team championship because
35:20
Speaker 3: we don't have like the distance runners and different things
35:23
Speaker 3: of that nature. Because if you look at it, you know,
35:25
Speaker 3: some of the field the shot put, the discus, the
35:28
Speaker 3: sprinting events, the sort of those middle eight hundred, four
35:31
Speaker 3: hundred races, we did really really well on both sides
35:34
Speaker 3: of men and women.
35:35
Speaker 10: Yeah, well, that's what it came down to, because it's
35:37
Speaker 10: like we're supposed to have sixty people on the team,
35:40
Speaker 10: and they cut the scholarship money, so we weren't able
35:43
Speaker 10: to have as many people as we thought we would,
35:45
Speaker 10: so that we couldn't win a conference championship because of that.
35:50
Speaker 4: And how has that affected your like your ability to train, Like,
35:54
Speaker 4: since you don't have a track, where, how did you
35:56
Speaker 4: compensate as far as being able to get in shape
35:59
Speaker 4: and keep in shape for all of these different events
36:01
Speaker 4: that you had coming up.
36:03
Speaker 10: Well, we'd go back and forth between lately in St. Albans,
36:07
Speaker 10: Saint Albans is a terrible track, like honesty, we say that,
36:16
Speaker 10: and then lately lately it is good, but there's better tracks.
36:20
Speaker 10: But we just had to go there really early in
36:22
Speaker 10: the morning because you see, would be practicing there in
36:24
Speaker 10: the afternoon. And at other schools they have tracks on
36:27
Speaker 10: campus so they don't have to practice in thirty degree
36:30
Speaker 10: weather between ages twenty five, Like, I didn't.
36:34
Speaker 3: Like that, so what so again again you again, you're
36:37
Speaker 3: all American all Regional, all conference. You you've done and
36:41
Speaker 3: when you you've broken numerous conference and state records West
36:47
Speaker 3: Virginia State University, that is records, school records. So where
36:50
Speaker 3: were you thinking about? Where's the next landing spot? Put
36:57
Speaker 3: it on the spot.
37:00
Speaker 10: I mean, I just I'm having to make a decision
37:03
Speaker 10: on if I want to go D one or D
37:04
Speaker 10: two or not.
37:05
Speaker 3: That's really what it comes Well, let me ask this
37:07
Speaker 3: question since he's already kind of opened it up. Since
37:10
Speaker 3: you said D one or D two, I have to
37:12
Speaker 3: assume that there's some D ones out there that are interested. Yes, okay,
37:18
Speaker 3: what what are you particularly looking for? Not necessarily saying
37:22
Speaker 3: the school, but what what would be your What would
37:25
Speaker 3: be the perfect scenario for you to walk into a
37:29
Speaker 3: D one D two school that has everything that you
37:33
Speaker 3: think you want? What are those things that you think
37:35
Speaker 3: you want and need?
37:36
Speaker 10: Well, I know I want to go to another HBCU.
37:39
Speaker 10: I know that. Okay, that's what I've really been looking into.
37:42
Speaker 10: So that's probably where I'll go. I have an idea
37:44
Speaker 10: where I'm going to go. It just comes down to
37:46
Speaker 10: like scholarship money.
37:48
Speaker 3: Right, Okay, sorry, So as far as facilities are concerned,
37:52
Speaker 3: is that's something that you're definitely like looking at and analyzing.
37:55
Speaker 10: Yeah, the schools that told me they don't have no track.
37:58
Speaker 3: They're out and that's and that's and you know, and
38:02
Speaker 3: that's you know, that's a that's kind of a really
38:05
Speaker 3: a bad thing that you would have to have that
38:09
Speaker 3: you know, that be on in your mind as and
38:13
Speaker 3: justifiably a reason why you would leave West Virginia State University.
38:18
Speaker 3: I think I think that's a bad I mean, that's
38:21
Speaker 3: a bad sign, you know, I just you know, I
38:25
Speaker 3: think but but you but obviously to where you want
38:29
Speaker 3: to go, what you want to be, You're you're in
38:33
Speaker 3: a situation that you are forced to go. Yeah, you know,
38:36
Speaker 3: so I don't think there's nothing that anybody could remotely
38:40
Speaker 3: judge you on other than making a very very smart
38:43
Speaker 3: decision and finding a place to where you can be
38:46
Speaker 3: even better.
38:47
Speaker 4: Yeah, you've obviously already let your coaching people know that
38:50
Speaker 4: you know, you're you're leaving. At what was their reaction?
38:53
Speaker 4: I'm sure it was probably a little bit of a
38:55
Speaker 4: mixture of sadness And tell me about that process. So
39:00
Speaker 4: was it if.
39:01
Speaker 3: You can only see the face, I.
39:04
Speaker 10: Think a lot of people are trying to convince me
39:06
Speaker 10: yes I can their good but right right.
39:09
Speaker 3: Yeah, see, and and and I talk about transfer and
39:14
Speaker 3: all that, and I think like, there are a lot
39:16
Speaker 3: of transfers that are and I'll say for the benefit
39:22
Speaker 3: of the athlete, but it may not help them. Okay, Yeah,
39:25
Speaker 3: that makes you know what I'm saying. They just want
39:27
Speaker 3: to leave and it may benefit them, but it's not
39:31
Speaker 3: necessarily going to be beneficial for them in this particular situation.
39:36
Speaker 4: This is a whole difference.
39:38
Speaker 3: Yeah, this is a totally different situation to where anybody
39:42
Speaker 3: who hears the whole story and understands. And if I'm
39:47
Speaker 3: at the school, if I'm the coach, I'm like, hey,
39:49
Speaker 3: I'm sorry, and I wish you the best of luck.
39:52
Speaker 3: Let me know if I can do anything for you. Yeah,
39:54
Speaker 3: I might be like it, but I also might be like, look,
40:00
Speaker 3: talk about just being a legend, trying to sell you
40:04
Speaker 3: something else. And I do I see that. I can
40:07
Speaker 3: see the coaches, you know, because you may not understand
40:11
Speaker 3: and and maybe you do when you're this athlete, yeah,
40:15
Speaker 3: and you that means you're that athlete for that team. Okay.
40:20
Speaker 3: And and if I'm a coach and that athlete is
40:26
Speaker 3: legitimately being short changed and I can't help you. Yeah,
40:31
Speaker 3: you're right, you know what I'm saying. Like, I just
40:34
Speaker 3: think that it would be extremely difficult for me to
40:37
Speaker 3: know that I have to let you go. So so
40:40
Speaker 3: let me ask you this, and I'm gonna get in
40:41
Speaker 3: your pocket a little bit. So for for tracking, we
40:45
Speaker 3: hear about the nil money for like track athlete excuse me,
40:48
Speaker 3: basketball athletes, football athletes, and different things of that nature.
40:50
Speaker 3: As far as it's track and field, not you personally
40:52
Speaker 3: per se, it is n I L kind of a
40:55
Speaker 3: factor in like track and field has it stands today? Wait,
41:02
Speaker 3: what do you mean like n I L. Like you know,
41:04
Speaker 3: at a D one level, are they are those athletes
41:07
Speaker 3: being compensated? Like similar to what like the football and
41:09
Speaker 3: basketball players are being compensated.
41:13
Speaker 10: I could say, yes, but not as much, not as much.
41:16
Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, let me ask you to something to her
41:22
Speaker 3: point of saying, maybe not at the level as basketball
41:26
Speaker 3: or football. That's why I think it has to be.
41:32
Speaker 3: It has to be across the board. Everybody at whatever
41:36
Speaker 3: level you transfer this is this is the top money
41:39
Speaker 3: that you could get, and the only person who gets
41:41
Speaker 3: that is the top athletes. And then you go, then
41:44
Speaker 3: it goes down because again, you can have a top
41:47
Speaker 3: athlete who's gonna go to maybe a go to a
41:50
Speaker 3: D one school, D two school and change the dynamics there.
41:55
Speaker 3: You know, I'm already I'm already making the case that
41:57
Speaker 3: you're gonna change the dynamics. You already did it. Yeah,
41:59
Speaker 3: you've already done it at State. So you're going to
42:01
Speaker 3: change those dynamics. And the NIL money, if it's small,
42:08
Speaker 3: that's unfair because I don't think see I don't think
42:12
Speaker 3: I think NIL should actually come whether it's the donor
42:17
Speaker 3: should bring that into the school and the school should
42:21
Speaker 3: break that out based on athletes in every single sport.
42:26
Speaker 4: You want to go ahead, Well, I was just going
42:28
Speaker 4: to say I think that you're you're you're right. I mean, morally,
42:32
Speaker 4: that's the way that it should work. But I think
42:34
Speaker 4: what happens is the school was looking at the sports
42:36
Speaker 4: that bring in bringing the revenue, and that's who the athletes.
42:40
Speaker 4: Those are the athletes that are going to be compensated
42:42
Speaker 4: more because they bring in more revenue for the school.
42:44
Speaker 4: I'm not saying that's right or wrong. I'm just saying
42:46
Speaker 4: that's that's probably the bottom line. Like everything else in
42:49
Speaker 4: this this you know world is it's all about the money.
42:53
Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think the NCAA unfortunately they forfeited that
42:57
Speaker 3: sort of scenario, which probably would have been a little
42:59
Speaker 3: bit good excuse me, a little bit better than what's
43:01
Speaker 3: currently going on, because the money's coming from third parties, right,
43:04
Speaker 3: So if I'm the third party, I can earmark said
43:07
Speaker 3: funds and I can say, hey, I want just to
43:09
Speaker 3: go to X y Z. So unfortunately, I think the
43:12
Speaker 3: problem is the way the money is coming in. That's
43:15
Speaker 3: the problem market. It's ear market or like I said,
43:18
Speaker 3: it's just not coming in from like then the nc DOUBA,
43:21
Speaker 3: where they would probably have to be a little bit
43:23
Speaker 3: more equival the distribution of it. So but Candice, so,
43:27
Speaker 3: what what is the so you know, like again you
43:30
Speaker 3: you've reached a lot of success early, So what is
43:33
Speaker 3: the like the ultimate goal as far as a track
43:36
Speaker 3: and field career, to go pro, to go pro? Okay,
43:40
Speaker 3: and we sing like even at the because I think
43:42
Speaker 3: there was a there was a pro race recently, a
43:45
Speaker 3: pro meet recently. So they're so track and field is
43:48
Speaker 3: actually starting to you know, just coming, it's starting to
43:52
Speaker 3: come out of the Olympics. And we're starting to see
43:54
Speaker 3: it more on those off years, and and the compensations
43:57
Speaker 3: going up in a notoriety's going up as well.
44:00
Speaker 4: Wanted to evolve. So did you actually enter candas that
44:03
Speaker 4: the portal or was this something that you did on
44:05
Speaker 4: your own as far as researching the schools that you
44:07
Speaker 4: wanted to possibly transfer to.
44:10
Speaker 10: I did it on my own.
44:11
Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, okay, any What's what's the goal?
44:18
Speaker 3: What's the goal when when you when you leave? What's
44:21
Speaker 3: your goal? Where are you? What? What do you see happening?
44:26
Speaker 3: What do you think is going to ultimately be your
44:28
Speaker 3: best race? What's the goal? If if it is the
44:32
Speaker 3: actually the Olympics, what is that race that you would
44:35
Speaker 3: be interested in running or would you want to run
44:38
Speaker 3: them all?
44:40
Speaker 10: I think I want to move up to the two
44:42
Speaker 10: and the four.
44:44
Speaker 3: Yeah that cord ain't no joke. Hard Well, you know,
44:52
Speaker 3: it's funny because like I had when I was running track,
44:54
Speaker 3: and like I said, I wasn't. I was not anywhere
44:57
Speaker 3: remotely as talented as you, and my coaches kept telling me,
45:01
Speaker 3: you need to run the four because you're not gonna
45:03
Speaker 3: You're not gonna You're never gonna run win the hundred
45:06
Speaker 3: You're never gonna win the two hundred, but you might
45:08
Speaker 3: have a chance at the four. All I could think
45:11
Speaker 3: of in the four was how I'm gonna feel coming
45:15
Speaker 3: out of that car, you know the oxygen? Yeah, Like, man,
45:20
Speaker 3: that's gonna that's gonna that's gonna kill me. Do you
45:24
Speaker 3: think you how do you feel about the quarter?
45:27
Speaker 4: Like?
45:27
Speaker 9: What?
45:28
Speaker 3: How was that in your mind? Like when you when
45:30
Speaker 3: you're thinking about running something like that? Like what is like?
45:32
Speaker 3: What do you?
45:33
Speaker 8: Like?
45:33
Speaker 3: Are you? Because my thing is I can't get past
45:36
Speaker 3: how how bad I'm gonna feel when I when I
45:38
Speaker 3: get done. I'm standing, I'm standing at the at the
45:42
Speaker 3: takeoff and I'm like already like, man, when I get
45:44
Speaker 3: on the other side, and I'm gonna be dead. There's
45:46
Speaker 3: your block. Yeah that's my block. What what is it?
45:49
Speaker 3: What is it mentally to you when you're running races
45:51
Speaker 3: like that?
45:52
Speaker 10: Well, the four hundred is not that bad. You just
45:55
Speaker 10: gotta be in shame for it.
45:58
Speaker 3: Okay, you're probably wrong. I probably just never got that.
46:04
Speaker 10: And it's just really technical, really really really technical, and
46:10
Speaker 10: if you don't got it down, you just don't got it.
46:13
Speaker 3: See, And I don't think people people don't know that
46:17
Speaker 3: to your point about it four hundred you're one hundred
46:19
Speaker 3: percent right, and and I and I'm thinking, like, you know,
46:23
Speaker 3: I don't know if we really work on you know,
46:26
Speaker 3: I'm not I'm not shooting at coaches, but I don't
46:29
Speaker 3: know if we are putting in the technicality of the
46:33
Speaker 3: hundred yard dash, you know, because and again we're talking
46:37
Speaker 3: about somebody who who is you might as well say
46:39
Speaker 3: it is professionally ranked at it saying that, and yet
46:46
Speaker 3: you got kids running the hundred, just getting in the
46:50
Speaker 3: blocks and just going and just trying to run. And
46:53
Speaker 3: I think that's the challenge is different. That's why saying
46:57
Speaker 3: that earlier to Lisa, Like when you look at around
46:59
Speaker 3: the name and you see in some of these times
47:01
Speaker 3: with these athletes, and I'm talking about high school athletes
47:04
Speaker 3: and you know, Texas and Florida and California, it is
47:07
Speaker 3: amazing the times that we're seeing in the one to
47:10
Speaker 3: two and the four in the relay races. So no,
47:13
Speaker 3: go ahead, go ahead, no you god. I was just
47:15
Speaker 3: gonna say, like, what is what is your what is
47:19
Speaker 3: your goal for the hundred? Like what is what do
47:22
Speaker 3: you think where do you think you could be in
47:25
Speaker 3: the hundred yard dash, time wise, the right training, if
47:32
Speaker 3: everything was right the way you wanted you you had
47:35
Speaker 3: all the good training, you had a trainer even and
47:38
Speaker 3: you're on the line ready to run where where where
47:41
Speaker 3: do you think what would be a goal that you
47:43
Speaker 3: would like to hit by the.
47:45
Speaker 10: End of junior year? Probably eleven two.
47:48
Speaker 3: So what I'm saying, hey, I appreciate that, you know.
47:56
Speaker 3: That's why I asked because I wanted to hear if
47:59
Speaker 3: there is an actual goal. And I'm sure that you
48:02
Speaker 3: have a goal for each single one of the races
48:05
Speaker 3: that you do. And I think, you know, when we
48:08
Speaker 3: talked about like what is it that motivates people, I
48:11
Speaker 3: think it is that dream. I think it is that
48:13
Speaker 3: time that's that you put out there, that's the thing
48:16
Speaker 3: that really makes you go. You know, So HOLLI, Yeah,
48:20
Speaker 3: I was just going to say, like again, we thank
48:22
Speaker 3: you for coming on and like, you know, again you
48:25
Speaker 3: you've really done. You know, I'm an alumni, I'm a
48:28
Speaker 3: support of West Virginia State University. You love the university,
48:31
Speaker 3: and we're really proud of everything that you accomplished. And
48:34
Speaker 3: you know, like I said, moving forward, you always be
48:36
Speaker 3: a yellowjacket in our heart. But for real. We wish
48:39
Speaker 3: you like nothing but the best of luck, and I
48:42
Speaker 3: know you're going to do amazing and I can't wait
48:43
Speaker 3: to watch you on another side. And hey, and make
48:45
Speaker 3: sure Hollis has your has your phone numbers so that
48:48
Speaker 3: we can we can reach out sometime once you get going.
48:51
Speaker 3: We'll be back in touch with and have you back
48:53
Speaker 3: on the show, even if we got to do it
48:55
Speaker 3: by phone. Yes, absolutely, all right, Thank good luck to me.
48:59
Speaker 3: When I when I think about when I listen to
49:01
Speaker 3: her and I'm looking at her and her you know,
49:04
Speaker 3: her mannerisms and all that, like she seems so like gentle,
49:11
Speaker 3: but on the other side of it, it's like she's
49:13
Speaker 3: so matter of fact about what it is that she
49:16
Speaker 3: she wants. Now, you know, she may be she said
49:20
Speaker 3: she named some schools, but she also made a statement
49:23
Speaker 3: like it was going to be this, Like she feels
49:26
Speaker 3: like it's going to be this particular school, which again
49:29
Speaker 3: shows me like some certainty in her. And she's already
49:33
Speaker 3: got her life in a way that she she can
49:36
Speaker 3: see her life in a way she has a plan
49:38
Speaker 3: for it exactly. And I think I think success falls
49:43
Speaker 3: into that category of when you're so certain about where
49:47
Speaker 3: and you know where you want to go, why you're
49:50
Speaker 3: going there, what you want from it. I think, man,
49:53
Speaker 3: I think that is like, I don't know if it
49:55
Speaker 3: can get any better.
49:56
Speaker 4: Than that, especially a young She's I'm so young, but
50:01
Speaker 4: very mature for her age, you can tell that and
50:03
Speaker 4: goal oriented. And that's what people that are successful in
50:08
Speaker 4: life kind of set those goals early in life and
50:10
Speaker 4: they don't waste a lot of time on figuring out
50:13
Speaker 4: what they want. I'm not saying that all people do
50:15
Speaker 4: that that are successful. You know, some people have to
50:17
Speaker 4: take their time and kind of take the long way
50:19
Speaker 4: home to figure out what they want to do with
50:21
Speaker 4: their life. But it seems like the ones that at
50:23
Speaker 4: a younger age figure out, this is what I want
50:26
Speaker 4: and this is what I have to do to get it,
50:28
Speaker 4: those are the people that make it.
50:30
Speaker 3: Yeah. And there's nothing that anybody could say to her
50:35
Speaker 3: to make her like think in her mind, you can't
50:38
Speaker 3: achieve it. Yeah, one hundred percent.
50:40
Speaker 4: Man.
50:40
Speaker 3: Like I said, I think she's going places and I
50:43
Speaker 3: can't wait to watch them. So what I wanted to
50:46
Speaker 3: talk about a little bit while we have a little
50:47
Speaker 3: bit of time is obviously the Baseball Hall of Fame.
50:50
Speaker 3: So the Baseball Hall of Fame has opened their doors
50:54
Speaker 3: potentially potentially back up to Pete Rose and shoeless Joe John,
51:00
Speaker 3: which I don't understand that one, but just specifically talking
51:02
Speaker 3: about Pete Rose and I just wanted to get you
51:04
Speaker 3: guys thoughts on you know, is it too little, too late?
51:08
Speaker 3: Is it sort of a slap in the face after
51:09
Speaker 3: he's passed away? And will this lead to potentially Barry
51:13
Speaker 3: Bonds getting in as well? What do you guys think?
51:15
Speaker 3: I think let me let me answer the second question first.
51:19
Speaker 3: That's an easy one. I think yes, it will. It
51:21
Speaker 3: will ultimately impact it. I think it may impact I
51:23
Speaker 3: think there was seventeen banded players. Ever, I think there's
51:28
Speaker 3: going to be. I think it'll it'll change a lot
51:31
Speaker 3: of those players. Okay, that's so I'm thinking that's opening
51:35
Speaker 3: the door. Yeah, Okay. On that flip side of that, like,
51:45
Speaker 3: I don't know, can you can you take this stigma
51:48
Speaker 3: off me even if you put me in the home.
51:51
Speaker 3: That's a good question. That's actually a really good question.
51:53
Speaker 3: That's a good what do you think?
51:55
Speaker 4: I mean? I mean, I don't know. I think that
51:58
Speaker 4: when all of this went down back in what was
52:01
Speaker 4: it nineteen eighty nine, I believe, and he was the
52:04
Speaker 4: manager of the Reds when he was actually caught betting
52:08
Speaker 4: on Major League Baseball. Not I don't think it was
52:10
Speaker 4: actually on his own team, but he was, you know,
52:12
Speaker 4: betting on At that time, betting was not looked at
52:16
Speaker 4: today like it is. I mean people, it's kind of
52:19
Speaker 4: arm in arm with sports. Yes, I mean he advertised games, yes,
52:25
Speaker 4: So you know, I think if something this infraction would
52:27
Speaker 4: have happened in today's day in time, I don't think
52:30
Speaker 4: it would have been a lifetime ban. Also, there were
52:34
Speaker 4: there was some information I looked up some things that
52:36
Speaker 4: in twenty fifteen, he approached the commissioner I think his
52:40
Speaker 4: name is Manfred that was the one that reversed the decision,
52:44
Speaker 4: and he actually he applied to be reinstated, and they
52:49
Speaker 4: interviewed him. They did some you know talking with him,
52:52
Speaker 4: and they point blank asked him in twenty fifteen. He
52:55
Speaker 4: lived in Las Vegas at that time, Pete Rose did,
52:59
Speaker 4: and they asked him, point are you still betting on sports?
53:02
Speaker 4: And his first reaction, his first answer was no, I
53:05
Speaker 4: don't do that anymore. And then later he came back
53:08
Speaker 4: and retracted that statement and said, yes, but I do
53:11
Speaker 4: it legally on other sports, you know, not baseball, but
53:14
Speaker 4: on other you know, different areas in sports. And so
53:18
Speaker 4: when that when he came back and kind of retracted
53:21
Speaker 4: that statement, saying he's still betting. That's when Manford come
53:24
Speaker 4: back and said, you know, you're still a threat to
53:27
Speaker 4: the game and we cannot reinstate you back to be
53:31
Speaker 4: able to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. So
53:34
Speaker 4: I don't know now now whether or not that made
53:36
Speaker 4: a difference that he first said he keep quit gambling
53:39
Speaker 4: and then later changed his mind. You know, maybe that
53:41
Speaker 4: impacted their ideas about whether or not he should be
53:44
Speaker 4: able to be inducted. But it probably didn't help that
53:48
Speaker 4: he at first didn't tell the truth.
53:51
Speaker 3: My thing is, even at the onset of it, I
53:53
Speaker 3: don't care you didn't bet, as you didn't. At least
53:56
Speaker 3: you didn't get caught betting as a player. We're talking
53:58
Speaker 3: about the Hall of Fame as a player, not a manager,
54:01
Speaker 3: right And Pete Rose, to me, embodies what a professional
54:06
Speaker 3: athlete should be like. They go hard, they're passionate about
54:09
Speaker 3: the game. I mean, he got the name Charlie Hustle
54:11
Speaker 3: just because of the vigor in which he played the game.
54:14
Speaker 3: So to me, he should have never been banned again.
54:17
Speaker 3: The band could have been like, well, you can't work
54:19
Speaker 3: in professional baseball anymore because you violated rules, and that's fair, fine,
54:23
Speaker 3: that's right, right, yeah, And for what you did on
54:26
Speaker 3: the field, you're the hit king. You played your rear
54:30
Speaker 3: end off. You should be in the Hall of Fame.
54:32
Speaker 3: Same thing with Barry Bonds. And my problem with the
54:36
Speaker 3: whole Bonds conversation is this, he played during the steroid era.
54:41
Speaker 3: He's the best of the steroid era, right, so there's
54:46
Speaker 3: allegations that he possibly did he never never confirmed. But
54:49
Speaker 3: here's what we don't know. During the steroid era. We
54:53
Speaker 3: can tell you who definitively got caught, we can tell
54:57
Speaker 3: you who we had suspicions of, but we really can't
55:00
Speaker 3: you who didn't use it, right, because there may have
55:02
Speaker 3: been a player or to who we all hold up high,
55:06
Speaker 3: who we say, who didn't you. They could have used
55:08
Speaker 3: it to get over an injury, to get out of
55:10
Speaker 3: a slump. There's a variety of ways which maybe you
55:13
Speaker 3: use it for a short time to get over the
55:15
Speaker 3: hump and then you just never touched it again. So Durman,
55:18
Speaker 3: the steroid errors. I'm not saying that we assume everybody
55:21
Speaker 3: did it, but we don't really know who didn't do it,
55:24
Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying. So to me, when we
55:26
Speaker 3: talk about Bonds, when we talk about you know, Pete Rose,
55:30
Speaker 3: there's no doubt they should be in the Hall of
55:32
Speaker 3: Fame because they were the best players of their time,
55:34
Speaker 3: were some of the best players. You you if you're
55:38
Speaker 3: not going to put them in the hall, okay, you
55:43
Speaker 3: they are your They are your history. You know, they
55:48
Speaker 3: are your history. They are if you if you go
55:51
Speaker 3: back in time and you start to think about who's
55:56
Speaker 3: shape who's shaping the game, those two names are huge.
56:04
Speaker 3: And the fact that you can you can actually act
56:10
Speaker 3: act like they did not exist and or that people
56:14
Speaker 3: do not love them, Yeah, that's that part. That's that
56:17
Speaker 3: that part that part too, because if you're thinking that people,
56:21
Speaker 3: there's some people who might be like, yeah, they don't need,
56:23
Speaker 3: they don't deserve to get back in, you know, or what.
56:26
Speaker 3: But I'm gonna make the case there's a ton of
56:29
Speaker 3: fans of those two players would care what they don't
56:33
Speaker 3: care what they've done. They saw what they actually did
56:37
Speaker 3: on the field.
56:38
Speaker 4: And this is This is my question, and you guys
56:40
Speaker 4: may know the answer, because I surely don't. What what
56:43
Speaker 4: what kind of got this conversation started about, you know,
56:47
Speaker 4: the permanent bands on these players and allowing them to
56:50
Speaker 4: expire after you know, they passed away. What what brought
56:54
Speaker 4: that up? Because Pete Rose passed away like a year
56:56
Speaker 4: and a half ago. Correct, it's been well maybe two
56:59
Speaker 4: years a two years ago, and so I just wondered
57:03
Speaker 4: what precipitated this whole conversation.
57:05
Speaker 3: That's actually a good question, which I don't know the answer.
57:07
Speaker 3: I don't know the answer, but I would also say,
57:10
Speaker 3: you know, when it comes to you know, particularly the
57:13
Speaker 3: base I would say any not any hall of fame,
57:15
Speaker 3: but particularly baseball and football. But we're just talking about baseball.
57:19
Speaker 3: And I know this is a point that you always
57:20
Speaker 3: make about who are the people voting on you, Like
57:25
Speaker 3: we gotta have a better process, Like I need to
57:28
Speaker 3: know come out front and I need to know your vote.
57:32
Speaker 3: I need to know your qualifications and more than anything,
57:35
Speaker 3: I need to know like are you paying attention to
57:37
Speaker 3: the sport? Are you still engaged in this thing to
57:40
Speaker 3: give an accurate assessment? Because to your point, Lisa and Coazley.
57:44
Speaker 3: People love Barry Bonds, people really love p row He
57:48
Speaker 3: is he loved. Yeah, he's not like a liked figure.
57:51
Speaker 3: He is a beloved figure. People really want to see him,
57:54
Speaker 3: and all people have quit watching baseball because he's not
57:57
Speaker 3: in the Hall of Fame. You come to West Virginia,
58:00
Speaker 3: talk about you talk about Pete Rose. Yeah right, you
58:03
Speaker 3: you you got you know, And so.
58:09
Speaker 4: Go ahead say, I was in Cincinnati this last week
58:12
Speaker 4: and at a Reds game, and the monument outside of
58:14
Speaker 4: the stadium is still people. I guess the fans when
58:17
Speaker 4: they come from different places, they lay the fresh roses
58:21
Speaker 4: on his monument. I mean, so you can go any game,
58:24
Speaker 4: like any time, and you'll see the fresh roses all
58:26
Speaker 4: around his monument.
58:27
Speaker 8: See.
58:27
Speaker 3: And I hate the idea of giving somebody, you know,
58:31
Speaker 3: like Baseball league, football League, basketball league, recognizing a player
58:39
Speaker 3: you know that they that has had some issue and
58:43
Speaker 3: you recognize you you punish him his entire off after
58:47
Speaker 3: his career, you punish him, or during his career, you
58:49
Speaker 3: punish him, and then you're going to try to celebrate
58:52
Speaker 3: him when he passes. Yeah, I mean that's it that
58:55
Speaker 3: you know he he is what he is or she
58:58
Speaker 3: is what she is to your program now, and whatever
59:02
Speaker 3: the other things that happened to them, whether they end
59:05
Speaker 3: up becoming a drug addict, they end up doing this,
59:07
Speaker 3: they end up doing that's that's over there. They still
59:12
Speaker 3: make the mark on the leak and the fact that
59:16
Speaker 3: you want to try to change that you can't. Yeah,
59:19
Speaker 3: And the fact of the matter is, like, look, that
59:21
Speaker 3: happened when he was a manager. He ain't got nothing
59:23
Speaker 3: to do with that. No, no, exactly exactly. I hope
59:27
Speaker 3: he gets in. Congratulations, Pete Rose, I'm calling him. All right,
59:32
Speaker 3: ladies and gentlemen, we're gonna get out of here, and
59:34
Speaker 3: we appreciate your listening and we'll be back again soon.
