- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory
- 0:11Speaker 1: Jim Hayes with Kyle Gibson and Matt Holliday.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Hello, gentlemen.
- 0:16Speaker 1: The Cardinals will open up a three game set quick
- 0:19Speaker 1: homestand with the Padres tonight. And they just got off
- 0:23Speaker 1: the road trip three and three, and the offense has
- 0:27Speaker 1: been clicking six point two runs per game since June second.
- 0:31Speaker 1: On this road trip they hit fourteen home runs. They're
- 0:35Speaker 1: suddenly murderers row a team that loves the long ball.
- 0:40Speaker 1: So I'm gonna start with you, Kyle, what are we
- 0:42Speaker 1: seeing from this bunch?
- 0:45Speaker 3: I think we are seeing the bottom of the lineup
- 0:47Speaker 3: have a little bit of an uptick. Church has had
- 0:50Speaker 3: a few good games, obviously, Lars. You know, springbok on
- 0:52Speaker 3: there with a big search for me and has been
- 0:55Speaker 3: hitting them all better. And we got a few of
- 0:58Speaker 3: those guys at the bottom that are really either setting
- 1:00Speaker 3: the table for the top or you know, doing their
- 1:04Speaker 3: own damage. And you know that adds a lot to it.
- 1:07Speaker 3: You know, Burley seems like he's on a little bit
- 1:09Speaker 3: of a little bit of a homer stretch here, and
- 1:12Speaker 3: we're gonna talk about him a little bit. But you know,
- 1:15Speaker 3: I've seen Weatherholt with a few more RBIs and and
- 1:17Speaker 3: the reason your leadoff guy has more RBIs obviously is
- 1:20Speaker 3: that seven eight nine is really doing their job. So
- 1:23Speaker 3: you know that really linkedins the lineup out. We've talked
- 1:25Speaker 3: about it a little bit when Newton was coming back,
- 1:27Speaker 3: when when he was thrown back into the lineup and healthy,
- 1:31Speaker 3: we really thought he was going to add a lot
- 1:33Speaker 3: to making this you know, five six, seven deep and
- 1:36Speaker 3: making it really tough for pictures to navigate. And now
- 1:40Speaker 3: if if guys who are you know in there for
- 1:42Speaker 3: primarily I say primarily defense. You know Churches is a
- 1:46Speaker 3: good hitter. For me, it's a good hitter. But you
- 1:48Speaker 3: know those guys are there for different reasons. But when
- 1:51Speaker 3: those guys really set the table and start commenting to
- 1:53Speaker 3: their own and really put you know, pressure on the
- 1:56Speaker 3: defense and on the starting pitcher, man, you get to
- 1:58Speaker 3: the top of the lineup with one out in the
- 2:01Speaker 3: third or fourth inning at two guys on, that makes
- 2:03Speaker 3: a big difference on the starting pitcher.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Let's talk about Place Jordan, the guy that the Cardinals
- 2:10Speaker 1: picked up via trade for Madness. Three games under his
- 2:14Speaker 1: belt right big league debut on the road, and he's
- 2:18Speaker 1: already got a homer and a triple under his belt,
- 2:22Speaker 1: and there was some question could he play third base.
- 2:25Speaker 1: He was playing third base on and off in the minors,
- 2:28Speaker 1: plays first base. Actually looked really good defensively at first base.
- 2:33Speaker 1: But we're seeing this young guy, Blaze Jordan, another guy
- 2:36Speaker 1: that the Cardinals called up, and he hits the ground
- 2:38Speaker 1: running Matt.
- 2:39Speaker 2: That's not easy to do, is it.
- 2:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's impressive.
- 2:44Speaker 5: I think that anytime you get called up, I mean,
- 2:47Speaker 5: never played in the big leagues, the pitching is obviously better.
- 2:50Speaker 5: There's this pressure, you know, this this excitement that you
- 2:55Speaker 5: need to harness. But you know, he's been on the
- 2:58Speaker 5: map a long time. He was like a childlihood sensation.
- 3:01Speaker 5: I remember my boys watching you know, him hit homers
- 3:05Speaker 5: on on YouTube and and however else you you know,
- 3:08Speaker 5: streaming uh stuff. So this guy's been, uh, he's been,
- 3:13Speaker 5: you know, sort of a name in baseball for a
- 3:15Speaker 5: long time, and uh for him to get his chance
- 3:17Speaker 5: and come up and do well and contribute to the
- 3:20Speaker 5: Cardinals is uh is pretty cool. So it's it's been
- 3:24Speaker 5: it's been pretty amazing to watch, you know. I think
- 3:26Speaker 5: their offense, I think coming into the season, you probably
- 3:30Speaker 5: wouldn't have guessed they would hit this many home runs,
- 3:32Speaker 5: and looking at their roster, that they would have had
- 3:33Speaker 5: manufacture a few more runs than this offense might struggle
- 3:37Speaker 5: to hit some home runs, but a lot of guys
- 3:40Speaker 5: are are are are hitting well. I think it's contagious.
- 3:43Speaker 5: I think guys are relaxed. I think new Bar comes
- 3:46Speaker 5: off the DL. He doesn't feel the.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Pressure to carry the team.
- 3:50Speaker 5: You don't have to slide him back in and and
- 3:52Speaker 5: and say, okay, larger hitting third.
- 3:54Speaker 4: And we need you to hit homers.
- 3:55Speaker 5: You know, he can kind of just come back in
- 3:57Speaker 5: and and and kind of, you know, gradually work his
- 4:00Speaker 5: way back and get get healthy and comfortable. And when
- 4:03Speaker 5: you don't have that pressure, when you kind of can
- 4:05Speaker 5: just feel like you can go out there and contribute.
- 4:07Speaker 5: I think it's the best case scenario for guys that
- 4:10Speaker 5: are coming off injury, your guys that are coming up
- 4:11Speaker 5: from the minor leagues, the expectation is just be you know,
- 4:15Speaker 5: have a good at bat and pass it to the
- 4:16Speaker 5: next guy. I think that's a that's a healthy way
- 4:19Speaker 5: to break in new players and bring players off the
- 4:21Speaker 5: d L.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Now we talk about Burley. We'll talk more about him
- 4:26Speaker 1: in a second. Walker continues to crush. But let's talk
- 4:31Speaker 1: about JJ Weatherhole. Let's not forget this is croaked season
- 4:36Speaker 1: and he's doing everything. He played short stuff the other day,
- 4:39Speaker 1: but double digit homers always seems to hit with runners
- 4:44Speaker 1: in scoring position. What are your thoughts on what JJ
- 4:48Speaker 1: has been able to do? And again, he's new to MLB.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think he's uh, you know, he's
- 4:56Speaker 3: somebody that I picked for my homer, you know, picked
- 4:59Speaker 3: the click quite a bit becau. I just feel like
- 5:00Speaker 3: he has a little bit of a slow heartbeat. You know,
- 5:03Speaker 3: he gets up there in his first few games at
- 5:05Speaker 3: Bush Stadium and he's singing his walk up song and
- 5:07Speaker 3: he's just you know, having fun and playing baseball. Already defensively,
- 5:11Speaker 3: one of the better second basements according to quite a
- 5:14Speaker 3: few metrics, which is, you know, a big bonus to have.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Normally at second base, you've got some kind of a
- 5:20Speaker 3: defensive player or an offensive player that you know struggles
- 5:25Speaker 3: a little bit defensively. When you have both, it's it's
- 5:27Speaker 3: a game changer. Let me say that again. Second base
- 5:31Speaker 3: normally is not a game changing position in the game.
- 5:34Speaker 3: But when you can add that to your lineup, it
- 5:37Speaker 3: can make a big difference and allow you to get
- 5:40Speaker 3: by with maybe some holes on your team in another area.
- 5:43Speaker 3: But yeah, I think it's pretty impressive with what he's doing. Obviously,
- 5:46Speaker 3: his makeup is off the charts from what I've heard
- 5:48Speaker 3: and from what people are saying, and you know, that
- 5:51Speaker 3: makes a big difference. I think it allows guys to
- 5:54Speaker 3: weather maybe a few games where you go over. And
- 5:56Speaker 3: it also allows you to keep your head about you
- 5:58Speaker 3: a little bit whenever you're on a tear and and
- 6:01Speaker 3: we're always told you're never as good as your best times,
- 6:03Speaker 3: and you're never as bad as your bad times. You're
- 6:05Speaker 3: always somewhere in the middle. So if he can keep
- 6:07Speaker 3: going and keep playing well above average baseball all around
- 6:12Speaker 3: the diamond, on both sides of the ball, you know,
- 6:14Speaker 3: he's exactly what the Cardinals were hoping for.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Yeah, you kind of forget that he's a rookie, the
- 6:19Speaker 1: way he plays defense, the way he hits, the way
- 6:22Speaker 1: he carries himself. Matt, what's the most impressive thing to
- 6:25Speaker 1: you about J. J.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Weather.
- 6:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I think I think people forget that. I think
- 6:32Speaker 5: coming into his junior year, a lot of the mock
- 6:34Speaker 5: drafts had him won one and they I.
- 6:38Speaker 4: Think he had an injury his junior year.
- 6:40Speaker 5: He missed some time and and ended up, you know,
- 6:44Speaker 5: still having a good year. But I think that there
- 6:47Speaker 5: was there was a big contingent of people that thought
- 6:49Speaker 5: he was the best player uh coming into that draft
- 6:53Speaker 5: and and ended up I think I don't know what
- 6:55Speaker 5: pick the Cardinals got him at, but I think they
- 6:57Speaker 5: they felt really lucky and and and with that opportunity
- 7:00Speaker 5: to pick him, and so having been around him a
- 7:04Speaker 5: little bit with uh, you know, Oaklhoma State has one
- 7:07Speaker 5: of the coaches at West Virginia that helped get him
- 7:09Speaker 5: there and coach him and knew a little bit about
- 7:12Speaker 5: JJ even before the Cardinals drafted him.
- 7:15Speaker 4: That was the talk.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Is a great great character, great work ethic, loves baseball baseball,
- 7:22Speaker 5: rat loves to play, loves to practice. And I think
- 7:26Speaker 5: that that you're seeing that any He's a college kid
- 7:29Speaker 5: that played three years. So I think when you've played,
- 7:32Speaker 5: when you've played college and played three years, UH, you
- 7:35Speaker 5: can move up the you know, the the minor leagues
- 7:37Speaker 5: pretty fast. The stage has not bothered him. Like like
- 7:41Speaker 5: Kyle said, he's he seems very comfortable in his own skin,
- 7:44Speaker 5: very comfortable in the box, with the with the team.
- 7:48Speaker 5: He played shortstop in college, so that always helps when
- 7:50Speaker 5: you when you move over to second, you have more
- 7:53Speaker 5: arm strength and maybe the average second basement because you've
- 7:56Speaker 5: played shortstop your whole life, which helps you can go
- 7:59Speaker 5: the ball up the middle and make the strong throw
- 8:01Speaker 5: on the double play, you get that extra step on
- 8:04Speaker 5: the runner. So I think that that he adds a
- 8:07Speaker 5: lot when you start talking about everything he does on
- 8:10Speaker 5: a baseball field and in the clubhouse and and uh,
- 8:13Speaker 5: you know, he's one of these guys that that you
- 8:15Speaker 5: can kind of start to think about building around. He's
- 8:17Speaker 5: kind of like a pillar of the organization. If he
- 8:20Speaker 5: continues to get better, you're looking at, you know, a
- 8:22Speaker 5: perennial all star type of talent and player.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Uh.
- 8:25Speaker 5: These are the guys that you need to develop. And
- 8:28Speaker 5: if you can develop them and and get them up
- 8:30Speaker 5: there and they produce and then you can resign them.
- 8:33Speaker 5: Uh if you can, if you can produce your own
- 8:35Speaker 5: superstar players, that's your best chance to have long term
- 8:38Speaker 5: uh success and winning, and particularly if you're if you're
- 8:41Speaker 5: not going to be in the free agent market every
- 8:43Speaker 5: year if you can develop your own all star players,
- 8:45Speaker 5: you give yourself a chance to win every year.
- 8:47Speaker 4: And I think that that's when you.
- 8:50Speaker 5: Start talking about Jordan Walker and and Mason Winn and
- 8:53Speaker 5: and jj and and and Burrelson, some of these guys
- 8:56Speaker 5: that have come up through the Cardinals system. It looks
- 8:59Speaker 5: more and more like it did when when we were
- 9:01Speaker 5: able to have the sustainable run where you're every year
- 9:05Speaker 5: in the playoffs. And so I think that that's exciting
- 9:08Speaker 5: as as a Cardinal fan, and you know, I think
- 9:10Speaker 5: they should be excited about some of the development that
- 9:12Speaker 5: they're seeing from these young players.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Quick side note, I don't know what sporting event concert
- 9:20Speaker 1: that you're looking forward to that's coming up. I just
- 9:23Speaker 1: want to say this that I'm a boxing fan and
- 9:26Speaker 1: Tyson Fury is going to fight Anthony Joshua.
- 9:29Speaker 2: At some point.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I don't know where that is, but when they do
- 9:33Speaker 1: settle that, I want to be there. And that's why
- 9:36Speaker 1: I'm thankful for our friends at sea Geek. With thirty
- 9:40Speaker 1: five million downloads, see Geek is the number one ticketing app.
- 9:44Speaker 1: They are seven hundred thousand events listed on sea Geek.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Sporting events, They've got concerts, they've got pretty much everything
- 9:53Speaker 1: and it's also MLB's official ticketing app.
- 9:57Speaker 2: They've also got World Cup as well. You know, Ipe,
- 9:59Speaker 2: you guys are big soccer.
- 10:00Speaker 1: I've got a code for our viewers where you get
- 10:04Speaker 1: ten percent off all MLB tickets Territory ten if you
- 10:08Speaker 1: want that Territory ten ten uh ticket discount on MLB tickets.
- 10:15Speaker 1: It's Territory ten every ticket back by the buyer guarantee
- 10:19Speaker 1: and thank you Siki gentlemen, real quick.
- 10:23Speaker 2: One event is coming up that you might want to be.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Attending, if it's a concert or a sporting event, World
- 10:29Speaker 1: Cup Action, kyl, what about you?
- 10:34Speaker 3: We are excited to go see Forrest s frank here
- 10:37Speaker 3: coming up in Saint Louis. I want to say, just
- 10:39Speaker 3: over a little over a month away. So our kids
- 10:42Speaker 3: love that music. He's got, you know, mixes, mixes and
- 10:46Speaker 3: collaborations with a lot of different artists and he puts
- 10:49Speaker 3: out some awesome stuff. So for St. Franc Is, who
- 10:51Speaker 3: we're looking forward to seeing.
- 10:53Speaker 5: How about you holiday, Well, I would have liked to
- 10:57Speaker 5: have had tickets last night's UFC fighting if you guys
- 11:00Speaker 5: watched that, but it was pretty riveting fighting and I
- 11:03Speaker 5: don't know if seat geek had tickets to the Oval
- 11:06Speaker 5: Office lawn, but I would have I would have paid
- 11:11Speaker 5: a good bit for the seat geek ticket to to
- 11:14Speaker 5: be next to old Trumpster last night to watch those fights.
- 11:17Speaker 5: But I would go to a World I'm actually out
- 11:20Speaker 5: in l A right now, and I would go to
- 11:23Speaker 5: a World Cup game. I missed the one, you know
- 11:27Speaker 5: last week. I think they played in Seattle, USA played
- 11:29Speaker 5: Seattle in Seattle, and then they come back here.
- 11:31Speaker 4: But just for the experience.
- 11:33Speaker 5: I'm not a huge soccer guy, but after watching that
- 11:35Speaker 5: first game, they looked really good.
- 11:37Speaker 4: So I would I would go to that.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Are weeing to like a left field talk? Because that
- 11:46Speaker 3: break I didn't have that own our list here and
- 11:48Speaker 3: I didn't know where you were going. I just assumed
- 11:50Speaker 3: we were going somewhere else to left field. With how
- 11:51Speaker 3: you segued into that right there.
- 11:54Speaker 5: That's what the pros do, Kyle. They go in and out.
- 11:56Speaker 5: You just don't even know. That's what the.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Person didn't even know it was coming.
- 12:00Speaker 5: Let's reason, I'll tell you.
- 12:06Speaker 4: It'll just give those.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm I'm a numerous Emmy winner, There's no question
- 12:11Speaker 1: about it. All right, Let's get back to the baseball talk.
- 12:13Speaker 1: By the way, thank you see ten percent territory ten
- 12:17Speaker 1: And uh, I will I will be trying to get
- 12:19Speaker 1: tickets because I would like to see Tyson Fury.
- 12:21Speaker 2: And last night's car was unbelievable.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Uh for the UFC Gatchee, I didn't see that coming.
- 12:29Speaker 2: He won.
- 12:29Speaker 1: It was unbelievable. All right, let's talk about Nolan Morman.
- 12:32Speaker 1: So before uh we did our last episode the Cardinals,
- 12:37Speaker 1: I'm sorry, after we did our last episode, the Cardinals
- 12:40Speaker 1: sent Gorman. Now he was strung right, he was in
- 12:43Speaker 1: a bad way, striking out an awful lot.
- 12:46Speaker 2: How did the Cardinals handle that?
- 12:47Speaker 1: And and I'll go with Holiday because he's a header
- 12:50Speaker 1: on this what does he have to do to.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Sort of correct himself?
- 12:53Speaker 1: We know what's in there because we've seen it, and
- 12:57Speaker 1: he has to kind of power very few hitters.
- 13:00Speaker 2: What does he have to do to get right?
- 13:03Speaker 5: Look, I think at this point you're looking at some
- 13:06Speaker 5: sort of change. You have to make a mechanical change.
- 13:08Speaker 5: You can't keep rolling out the same move, whether it's
- 13:12Speaker 5: your load or your timing or your path. So whatever
- 13:18Speaker 5: whatever he's got going right now, it's gonna have to
- 13:21Speaker 5: change a little bit. And you're gonna have to either
- 13:23Speaker 5: try a stance change or try some sort of hand move,
- 13:27Speaker 5: or maybe an earlier load or a different load. But
- 13:32Speaker 5: I think sometimes with hitting, if if you just keep
- 13:34Speaker 5: running the same thing out there, it's not going to
- 13:38Speaker 5: get much better. And I think that that's one of
- 13:41Speaker 5: the things where I don't know. I mean, I haven't
- 13:44Speaker 5: watched him enough to give you my personal opinion on
- 13:47Speaker 5: what I would do to change him. But like you said,
- 13:51Speaker 5: the raw power obviously has been there forever, and you know,
- 13:55Speaker 5: at times has shown it. It's just been the consistency, right,
- 13:59Speaker 5: just consistence, consistency.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Of the bat path.
- 14:02Speaker 5: When you have that kind of power, if you can
- 14:05Speaker 5: keep the bat and the strike zone long enough to
- 14:07Speaker 5: touch enough balls, then you can have you can have
- 14:12Speaker 5: more sustained success and you can find hits and they
- 14:14Speaker 5: don't always have to be home runs. Where it seemingly
- 14:18Speaker 5: is is for you know, lately, it's been for him,
- 14:20Speaker 5: it's been all or nothing, And that could be a
- 14:23Speaker 5: tough that could be a tough place to be where
- 14:28Speaker 5: you know you're relying on the home run, you're striking
- 14:31Speaker 5: out a lot, it's a it's a and you're not
- 14:33Speaker 5: hitting a bunch of them, and so it's a stagnant offense,
- 14:38Speaker 5: you know when you get there to his spot. So
- 14:40Speaker 5: I think, you know, sort of just some sort of
- 14:45Speaker 5: change would be my suggestion of let's do something different
- 14:47Speaker 5: that feels different because we've got to unlock that that
- 14:51Speaker 5: power potential.
- 14:52Speaker 4: That would be what I would say.
- 14:54Speaker 1: And if you look, Kyle and what the Cardinals are
- 14:56Speaker 1: doing now, still win it, right, still seven games over
- 14:59Speaker 1: five hundred, but the lineup they've kind of renovated it
- 15:03Speaker 1: on the fly, and this is a year that's a reset.
- 15:05Speaker 1: They're still winning, but they put different pieces. It seems
- 15:09Speaker 1: people they call up are doing a good job than
- 15:11Speaker 1: the people they got to send down to work on things.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Whatever they do, it seems to.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Yeah, And I mean I think that's something that you know,
- 15:20Speaker 3: is a is a sign of good process. I think
- 15:23Speaker 3: that's something that's a sign of a front office that
- 15:27Speaker 3: has a good plan. And this is not to contrast
- 15:30Speaker 3: with what Mo and the previous front office did. I think,
- 15:35Speaker 3: you know, the Cardinals had a lot of prosperous times
- 15:37Speaker 3: where they would bring up players and would be really
- 15:40Speaker 3: good and had stretches of long success. Right, So I
- 15:44Speaker 3: don't make that statement as to say, you know what
- 15:47Speaker 3: him is doing is you know, uncharted territories for Cardinal
- 15:52Speaker 3: fans because it's not but you notice it more when
- 15:56Speaker 3: you're winning. You notice it more when it's an immediate
- 15:59Speaker 3: impact or when it's a player that you don't necessarily
- 16:01Speaker 3: expect it to come from. So that's a good thing,
- 16:05Speaker 3: you know. And I think you know, in a situation
- 16:07Speaker 3: with Blaze Jordan or Hunter Dobbins or or you know
- 16:11Speaker 3: some of these other players that have been traded for,
- 16:14Speaker 3: you know, that's that's also a welcoming site is when
- 16:16Speaker 3: you when as a fan base, you feel like you
- 16:18Speaker 3: gave away, uh, you know, trade away three or four
- 16:21Speaker 3: players that you're pretty excited to watch and thought you
- 16:24Speaker 3: made your team better. And now when these young guys
- 16:27Speaker 3: come up and are showing the kind of player and
- 16:30Speaker 3: the reason why they were traded for, you know, that
- 16:33Speaker 3: can definitely help. So I think when it comes to Gorman,
- 16:39Speaker 3: I mean, I agree with Holiday, I think, uh, I
- 16:42Speaker 3: think some sort of change is probably important, even if
- 16:46Speaker 3: it's just trying to remember his identity as a player
- 16:49Speaker 3: when he's gone through some of these good stretches, because
- 16:51Speaker 3: let's face it, he's been above average hitter for many
- 16:55Speaker 3: stretches in his career. It's just you know, in the
- 16:58Speaker 3: Cardinals fans and probably in his mind right now, he
- 17:01Speaker 3: remembers the struggles a little bit more because he's just
- 17:04Speaker 3: had him more recently. But you know, he's a player that,
- 17:06Speaker 3: as I talked to Cardinals fans before I was with
- 17:08Speaker 3: the Cardinals and and after is you know, he was
- 17:11Speaker 3: a thirty to forty homer power guy. And you know,
- 17:14Speaker 3: how can how can the hitter, the hitting development guys
- 17:18Speaker 3: and the hitting coaches get together and figure out, you know,
- 17:21Speaker 3: how can we put Nolan in the best place physically
- 17:26Speaker 3: in the box, mentally in the box to get the
- 17:29Speaker 3: best out of them? You know, that's what what really
- 17:31Speaker 3: good coach is doing, what really did good development staffs do.
- 17:34Speaker 3: So yeah, I hope nothing for the best for him.
- 17:37Speaker 3: I hope that he can, you know, make some adjustments
- 17:40Speaker 3: and come back up because I've I've always said since
- 17:43Speaker 3: my time there, I think he has a chance to
- 17:45Speaker 3: be a huge piece of making this team take the
- 17:48Speaker 3: next step because of his power and his defense and.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Still young, right, still young guys, Soo's got plenty of
- 17:55Speaker 1: time to to straighten things out.
- 17:57Speaker 2: When we come back from a quick break, we'll talk
- 18:01Speaker 2: and the bullpen.

- 19:06Speaker 2: All right, so let's talk a little Burley.
- 19:07Speaker 1: He's got five homers in his last six game, which
- 19:11Speaker 1: he's got a fourteen game heading streak.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Look, I know we all know how good Burley can be.
- 19:17Speaker 1: And he's another guy who's by any standard, not an
- 19:20Speaker 1: old guy, still a young player. But Matt, he seems
- 19:24Speaker 1: to be getting better and better and better, and he
- 19:27Speaker 1: can do it all. He can drive an outside pitch.
- 19:30Speaker 1: You want to throw him a neck high fastball, he's
- 19:32Speaker 1: going to crush that too. What do you see in
- 19:35Speaker 1: Alan Burlason?
- 19:38Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I think this is such a throwback
- 19:40Speaker 5: like hitter. And I saw on the MLB Network the
- 19:43Speaker 5: other day they put us side by side up of
- 19:45Speaker 5: him and John Cruck and maybe, you know, just because
- 19:49Speaker 5: of the beard and the physical maybe appearance, but I
- 19:52Speaker 5: think he's such a he's such a throwback hitter of like,
- 19:56Speaker 5: he just can hit. Like the hit skill is the
- 19:59Speaker 5: one that stands out out right. He got to the
- 20:00Speaker 5: big leagues not because he hit a ton of home runs,
- 20:03Speaker 5: but because he can hit the ball to all fields
- 20:05Speaker 5: and he's he's got a good swing and he's just
- 20:08Speaker 5: he's just kind of a classic hitter. And now it
- 20:10Speaker 5: looks to me like he's starting to pick out balls
- 20:12Speaker 5: that he can hit over the fence, and now he's
- 20:15Speaker 5: hitting for more power and home runs. And I think that, like,
- 20:18Speaker 5: that's the best evolution of hitting. I think for me,
- 20:21Speaker 5: is like a guy that can hit the ball all
- 20:22Speaker 5: over the field, hits for a lot of doubles, hits
- 20:25Speaker 5: for a high average, and then as they get older
- 20:27Speaker 5: and more experienced and maybe even a little bit stronger,
- 20:30Speaker 5: they start those doubles start turning into home runs, they
- 20:33Speaker 5: start looking for pitches to hit over the fence, and
- 20:36Speaker 5: they develop into an all star hitter or maybe even
- 20:39Speaker 5: you know, a silver Slowger type of bat. And I
- 20:42Speaker 5: think that that's the maturation that we're looking at with him,
- 20:45Speaker 5: is that he can hit like he flat out knows
- 20:48Speaker 5: what he's doing. He's always hit, and now you know,
- 20:51Speaker 5: he's hitting more home runs. Obviously, Bush Stadium is not,
- 20:55Speaker 5: you know, the best place to hit home runs, but
- 20:57Speaker 5: he's hitting homers and and he and Ordan Walker, you know,
- 21:01Speaker 5: to me, as as the middle of the order, are
- 21:05Speaker 5: allowing the Cardinals to hope for like this is not
- 21:08Speaker 5: just a reset, like we can actually make the playoffs
- 21:11Speaker 5: and maybe we go out and add a piece or
- 21:13Speaker 5: two to our team and and and.
- 21:16Speaker 4: See what happens.
- 21:16Speaker 5: And so I think that the maturation of him and
- 21:19Speaker 5: Jordan have allowed the rest of the lineup sort of
- 21:24Speaker 5: to fall into place, and guys are plugged in where
- 21:27Speaker 5: they where they are most comfortable. And and so now
- 21:30Speaker 5: all of a sudden, their lineup and their offense is
- 21:33Speaker 5: is is in a much better place than than last
- 21:35Speaker 5: year at this time. So the combination of him and
- 21:38Speaker 5: obviously the pitching and the young pitching is has been helpful.
- 21:42Speaker 5: But I look at I look at him and Jordan Walker,
- 21:44Speaker 5: and I said, this is why we're talking about the
- 21:46Speaker 5: Cardinals in the first playoffs or first wild card spot
- 21:51Speaker 5: as we head, you know, towards the All Star break
- 21:53Speaker 5: of this team's not they're not looking to sell or
- 21:56Speaker 5: at least they're gonna have to consider adding as opposed
- 21:59Speaker 5: to tory trading off players. So I'm excited about about him.
- 22:03Speaker 5: And he's, like I said, I enjoy watching him hit.
- 22:06Speaker 4: He's he's kind of a throwback.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Seems to be getting better.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Look, I've been around baseball a long time, but what
- 22:13Speaker 1: I do is ask bad questions. So professional, Yes, you do, Kyle,
- 22:19Speaker 1: you're a pitcher, so you've seen Burley hit. It seems
- 22:22Speaker 1: to me like you're always trying to attack the weak
- 22:25Speaker 1: spots for a hitter, and I just don't see.
- 22:28Speaker 2: A lot of weak spots from Burley.
- 22:30Speaker 1: How would you attack this guy if there's a way
- 22:33Speaker 1: that seems plausible?
- 22:35Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, by the way holiday marginal.
- 22:39Speaker 3: It is a good question, except you know, when I
- 22:42Speaker 3: go back and look at our list of things to
- 22:44Speaker 3: talk about, it just said Burley. So it didn't say
- 22:47Speaker 3: come up with a plan to get him out. You know.
- 22:49Speaker 3: So you're asking me on the fly.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Here on the fly. That's why you get paid the
- 22:52Speaker 4: big bucks, buddy.
- 22:53Speaker 3: You know, it would normally take me thirty minutes to
- 22:55Speaker 3: dig into you know, So so here goes nothing. So
- 22:59Speaker 3: I think one thing that stood out about Burley to
- 23:03Speaker 3: me was how he prepared and how he he took
- 23:07Speaker 3: the time to kind of figure out in his mind
- 23:12Speaker 3: what a picture was going to do. He understands his swing,
- 23:15Speaker 3: he understands it strengths really well. But then he also
- 23:17Speaker 3: has a good idea of what the picture does and
- 23:19Speaker 3: what the picture strengths are. So there's just times where
- 23:23Speaker 3: to me, it seems like he's not gonna let the
- 23:25Speaker 3: picture get him out with the same pitch two times
- 23:27Speaker 3: in a row, you know, which seems like standard stuff.
- 23:30Speaker 3: But there's a lot of hitters that'll go up there
- 23:32Speaker 3: and stick to their plan the whole game. You know.
- 23:35Speaker 3: I think he's just somebody that's able to make in
- 23:38Speaker 3: a bad adjustments and even location to location, which you know,
- 23:43Speaker 3: I don't know. I would think that that might even
- 23:45Speaker 3: be a little bit harder than you know, from fastball
- 23:48Speaker 3: to off speed, you know, looking different speeds and different
- 23:52Speaker 3: sides of the plate. You know, if you're able to
- 23:54Speaker 3: adjust like that, it makes you a pretty good hitter.
- 23:56Speaker 3: I think. So if I were to start, you know,
- 24:00Speaker 3: and face Burley right now, what I normally did was
- 24:03Speaker 3: I looked for where is his least amount of damage
- 24:06Speaker 3: on a heater early in counts, and that's where I'm
- 24:09Speaker 3: starting to hit her off, and then I I would
- 24:11Speaker 3: look and see, you know, which off speed pitches he's
- 24:14Speaker 3: struggling with, and then I would go after that. You know,
- 24:17Speaker 3: Burley is a guy just like you know Matt said.
- 24:20Speaker 3: He can put the bat on the ball in any
- 24:21Speaker 3: count he wants to. Because his back to ball skills
- 24:24Speaker 3: are elite. His strikeouts probably mostly come from, you know,
- 24:29Speaker 3: taking a big swing at a pitch that looked like
- 24:31Speaker 3: something he could do damage on. But he does a
- 24:34Speaker 3: great job of fating the ball all directions, which makes
- 24:37Speaker 3: him tough to pitch to. A guy that just hooks
- 24:40Speaker 3: the ball is going to try to hook the off
- 24:41Speaker 3: speed and the fastball and the same at bat versus
- 24:44Speaker 3: Burley can kind of, you know, be on time to
- 24:46Speaker 3: pull the off speed and then still flick the heater
- 24:49Speaker 3: the other way and stay on it. His bat stays
- 24:53Speaker 3: in the zone a long time. And you know, I think,
- 24:55Speaker 3: like Matt said, this is the harder way to teach hitting.
- 24:59Speaker 3: From what I have talked to people, It's a little
- 25:02Speaker 3: bit easier to tell somebody to just swing hard and
- 25:04Speaker 3: try to hit the ball farther. It's not as easy
- 25:07Speaker 3: to teach somebody the contact skill. It's not as easy
- 25:09Speaker 3: to teach somebody the put the ball and play and
- 25:12Speaker 3: hit for average. So the fact that Burley can do
- 25:15Speaker 3: that and now he's developing, Okay, this is gonna be
- 25:17Speaker 3: my swing, and I'm gonna see what I can do
- 25:19Speaker 3: to this ball. If I get this pitch, I'm i
- 25:21Speaker 3: try to take my shot and then go back to
- 25:23Speaker 3: his approach. That's why he's got a silver Slugger, and
- 25:26Speaker 3: that's why I think, you know, he's got a chance
- 25:29Speaker 3: to get a few more in his career because he
- 25:31Speaker 3: he really understands that cat and mouse in the box
- 25:35Speaker 3: and he has the adjustability in it. Bat also, I
- 25:39Speaker 3: feel like, and Matt, I don't know what you think,
- 25:42Speaker 3: but I just feel like he has the ability to
- 25:44Speaker 3: get his swing off quickly. You know, he gets loaded
- 25:48Speaker 3: and when he chooses to swing, he can go quickly,
- 25:52Speaker 3: just you know, a touch faster than most big leaguers
- 25:55Speaker 3: and most guys that I've seen.
- 25:58Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I think that when that's what makes
- 26:01Speaker 5: a really good hitter, right, is a guy that that
- 26:04Speaker 5: it's a small move, Like he doesn't have a lot
- 26:06Speaker 5: of movement in his swing, so it's easily repeatable. And
- 26:09Speaker 5: and like Kyle said, like the timing of being ready
- 26:13Speaker 5: for the heater and then the ability to stay on
- 26:16Speaker 5: the off speed. And I think that's what separates him
- 26:18Speaker 5: is that he can hit the fastball the other way
- 26:20Speaker 5: and pull the off speed and when you look at him,
- 26:23Speaker 5: his load is repeatable. It's it looks very similar to
- 26:26Speaker 5: what he's done his whole life. There's not a big
- 26:28Speaker 5: move and and then he's ready on time. And I
- 26:31Speaker 5: think a lot of hitters, particularly now, with the velocity,
- 26:35Speaker 5: you don't have. You don't have time for excess movement,
- 26:38Speaker 5: you don't have time for over overloading.
- 26:41Speaker 4: Or you know, a late hand move.
- 26:44Speaker 5: So I think he has a a simple swing that
- 26:48Speaker 5: allows him to be on today's velocity. But yet he's
- 26:51Speaker 5: got sort of an old school mentality where he hits
- 26:53Speaker 5: the ball all over the field. He's not caught up
- 26:56Speaker 5: in the hitting it high to the pull side where
- 27:00Speaker 5: you know everybody's calculating the biggest slug is high to
- 27:03Speaker 5: the pool side.
- 27:04Speaker 4: Well we know that, we've.
- 27:05Speaker 5: Always known that, but it's like, how do you get
- 27:07Speaker 5: to the high to the pool side? And if you
- 27:09Speaker 5: sell out to hitting every everything high to the pool side,
- 27:12Speaker 5: you're very.
- 27:13Speaker 4: Much more easy to pitch to.
- 27:16Speaker 5: You know, pitchers can live down in a way because
- 27:17Speaker 5: the pitch is almost impossible.
- 27:19Speaker 4: To hit to hide to the pool side.
- 27:21Speaker 5: So when you have a guy that can spray the
- 27:22Speaker 5: ball and do damage the other way, now all of
- 27:25Speaker 5: a sudden they have to come closer to you, and
- 27:27Speaker 5: then you could pull those balls high to the pool
- 27:29Speaker 5: side and get the slug that everybody's talking about. But
- 27:32Speaker 5: if you never hit the ball the other way, and
- 27:34Speaker 5: you never show the ability to do damage and drive
- 27:38Speaker 5: in runs by using the outside part of the plate,
- 27:41Speaker 5: why would they ever come towards you. And so the
- 27:43Speaker 5: pitcher can just live out there. It's the easy, most
- 27:45Speaker 5: easy pitch to execute. If you miss it runs off
- 27:48Speaker 5: the plate, If you miss high, it runs up in
- 27:49Speaker 5: a way. And so I think that when you force
- 27:52Speaker 5: pitchers to come towards you, you have more chance of
- 27:54Speaker 5: would do damage to the pool side. And that's where
- 27:57Speaker 5: like some of the modern day hitting top of well
- 28:00Speaker 5: just you know, you want we want to hit it,
- 28:02Speaker 5: you know, high and and don't hit it on the
- 28:04Speaker 5: ground and pull it. And I just think we leave
- 28:07Speaker 5: a lot a lot out of how do we do
- 28:10Speaker 5: that and why you know, pictures are doing what they're doing,
- 28:13Speaker 5: and what do we do with that?
- 28:15Speaker 4: And so I think he does.
- 28:17Speaker 5: A great job of of of damaging the ball out
- 28:20Speaker 5: over and then when he knows that he's he's got
- 28:22Speaker 5: pictures to come towards him, then he's got the ability
- 28:25Speaker 5: to pull the ball in the air.
- 28:26Speaker 4: And so.
- 28:28Speaker 5: He's a he's a he's a like I said, he's
- 28:31Speaker 5: a he's a bit of a throwback hitter for me,
- 28:32Speaker 5: which I love to watch and and I think it's
- 28:34Speaker 5: been rubbing off on some of the other guys when
- 28:36Speaker 5: you talk about, you know, Jordan Walker's power.
- 28:38Speaker 4: I think this is.
- 28:39Speaker 5: Something that that Nolan Gorman could watch and and sort
- 28:43Speaker 5: of you know, take note of is the ability that
- 28:46Speaker 5: that Burlson has shown to use the whole field and
- 28:50Speaker 5: and I think that that's that's something that that he
- 28:52Speaker 5: could do as well. So I think that's why you're
- 28:55Speaker 5: seeing the production from Walker and Burlson that you're seeing
- 28:58Speaker 5: as they're using the whole field.
- 29:00Speaker 2: A lot of insight that all right, Last thing, Kyle,
- 29:03Speaker 2: this one's for you.
- 29:05Speaker 1: During a season, sometimes the offense is hot, sometimes it's
- 29:10Speaker 1: starting rotation is hot, sometimes not. Sometimes the bullpen is good,
- 29:15Speaker 1: sometimes a bullpen is not. Right now with the cardinal
- 29:18Speaker 1: bullpen kind of a match right now, tell me something
- 29:21Speaker 1: to make me understand that this too shall pass and
- 29:25Speaker 1: and they can get it together.
- 29:28Speaker 3: I thought you were going into the next ad like
- 29:30Speaker 3: we had like a porta cool fan coming in. You know,
- 29:33Speaker 3: when you're hot and you need to cool off, this
- 29:35Speaker 3: is what you need.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Idea. Yeah, it's a good selling Okay, uh.
- 29:42Speaker 3: No, you know, I was just kind of looking at
- 29:45Speaker 3: some bullpen and starter numbers. E RA A really is
- 29:49Speaker 3: pretty similar, honestly, between the two. The bullpenny RA gets
- 29:53Speaker 3: gets you know, more flat for being over four, just
- 29:57Speaker 3: because you know, it's shorter stints and less innings, you know,
- 30:00Speaker 3: and normally when you're giving up runs, you're probably giving
- 30:02Speaker 3: up runs at the end of the game like they
- 30:05Speaker 3: have here recently. And you know, when you're doing that
- 30:08Speaker 3: as a leverage guy, you're probably giving up the lead,
- 30:12Speaker 3: which also, you know, draws a lot more attention. So
- 30:17Speaker 3: I think the bullpen is still a spot where it
- 30:19Speaker 3: can be a shrink for this team. You know, we
- 30:21Speaker 3: still have guys down there that have had you know,
- 30:24Speaker 3: really really good seasons, and I've had really good stretches,
- 30:27Speaker 3: I know, you know, Standing you know, give up a
- 30:29Speaker 3: couple of runs recently, but he was on a fifteen
- 30:32Speaker 3: or seventeen game streak where he was really really reliable
- 30:35Speaker 3: and nasty. We know what Jojo can do. You know,
- 30:39Speaker 3: Jojo I feel like has been you know, snake bitten
- 30:41Speaker 3: by five or six of his twenty something outing, So
- 30:45Speaker 3: I still believe that he is, you know, the back
- 30:47Speaker 3: end leverage guy. And you know, we all have seen
- 30:49Speaker 3: Riley O'Brien be really nasty, and I think he's given
- 30:52Speaker 3: up a few runs in either non safe situations or
- 30:55Speaker 3: non blown saves where he's just you know, let the
- 30:57Speaker 3: game get closer. But I do think the bullpen was,
- 31:03Speaker 3: to me, would be a lot more magnified if the
- 31:06Speaker 3: offense wasn't doing what they were doing, Because I think
- 31:10Speaker 3: the offense is making up for some of those issues
- 31:12Speaker 3: right now. That's not always gonna be the case. So
- 31:14Speaker 3: I think there's gonna be stretches here, especially coming into
- 31:19Speaker 3: the next few weeks where you're playing some really really
- 31:21Speaker 3: good teams where if the bullpen falters, the offense may
- 31:25Speaker 3: not be you know, getting five six runs a game
- 31:28Speaker 3: and making up for some of them. So I do
- 31:30Speaker 3: think we're going to be in a stretcher where if
- 31:32Speaker 3: the back end of the bullpen and these guys can
- 31:34Speaker 3: you know, get going again and locking in here for
- 31:37Speaker 3: the next few weeks, it's gonna be a big deal
- 31:39Speaker 3: for this team and really allow them to get to
- 31:41Speaker 3: the All Star Break. Because if I remember right, there's
- 31:44Speaker 3: some some games coming up here against some some playoff
- 31:47Speaker 3: teams that are gonna you know, kind of determine here
- 31:49Speaker 3: going into the All Star Break where they're gonna be
- 31:51Speaker 3: sitting in the wildcard. So you know, this would be
- 31:53Speaker 3: a good stretch for the bullpen to you know, go
- 31:55Speaker 3: on a good run and you know, lock down the
- 31:58Speaker 3: leads at the end of the at the end of
- 31:59Speaker 3: the game and really take some of the pressure off
- 32:02Speaker 3: the offense as they're going up against these above five
- 32:04Speaker 3: hundred teams.
- 32:05Speaker 1: So just to recap today's podcast, we've had a poorly
- 32:10Speaker 1: executed live read by me and lots of insight from YouTube. Gentlemen,
- 32:14Speaker 1: I appreciate that and thank you for that. That's going
- 32:18Speaker 1: to do it.
- 32:18Speaker 3: For Don't be too hard on yourself, though you did
- 32:20Speaker 3: wear a time. I think it's worth putting out.
- 32:24Speaker 5: I think it's worth putting out that bullpen is the
- 32:26Speaker 5: easiest thing to get at the trade deadline, Like that's
- 32:28Speaker 5: where if the Cardinals are really going to go for it,
- 32:31Speaker 5: this is something where you can go out and trade
- 32:33Speaker 5: and get a couple of bullpen pieces because the teams
- 32:35Speaker 5: that aren't in the playoffs are willing to trade bullpen pieces,
- 32:38Speaker 5: So I think it, Like I said, if they keep
- 32:41Speaker 5: going and they're in the in the race, closing in
- 32:43Speaker 5: on the deadline, this is where you can add. I mean,
- 32:45Speaker 5: so even if they are running out of gas a
- 32:46Speaker 5: little bit in the back end, they might be able
- 32:49Speaker 5: to go out and get a couple of pieces that
- 32:51Speaker 5: would help them, you know, potentially push into the playoffs.
- 32:55Speaker 5: So I think that if you're going to have struggles,
- 32:57Speaker 5: that sometimes that's the easiest place to acquire.
- 33:00Speaker 1: And him said, they're not gonna forego the long term
- 33:04Speaker 1: plan just to add for this year just to get
- 33:08Speaker 1: in he has.
- 33:09Speaker 2: He said, we'll be creative about it.
- 33:11Speaker 1: And I think that falls into you can get bullpen
- 33:14Speaker 1: pieces without mortgaging your future. Gentlemen, that's gonna do it
- 33:18Speaker 1: for this edition of Cardinal Territory. We'll see you next time.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Hopefully that episode won't suck.
