- 1:03continue on with this week's yours truly Johnny Dollar Cereal. It's the Long Shot
- 1:08Matter, Parts three and Part four from Hollywood. It's time now for Lieutenant
- 1:19Barry here. Oh hi, Lieutenant, you're stepping on toes. Johnny boy,
- 1:22who's now doctor Victor Palm quizzed here you had a chat with him,
- 1:26just how he had chat with a clan whatever it was. He was very
- 1:27unhappy about it. He called you, yeah, very snide too, said
- 1:32if we had any more questions to leave him alone and call his lawyers and
- 1:34to keep unauthorized people away from him, meaning me, meaning you, Well,
- 1:38what's he worried about? You've already got his wife's killer in jail,
- 1:41haven't you. Everybody buys it but you, Johnny. You said it before.
- 1:44I'm a hired sale. Meet me for lunch. I'll try to sell
- 1:47you. Goodnight and every weekday Night. Bob Bailey and the Transcribed Adventures of
- 1:59the Man with the Action Packed Expencer Coud America's Fabulous freelance insurance Investigator US Truly
- 2:04Johnny Dollar. From Special Investigator Johnny Dollar location in Los Angeles, California to
- 2:22National Underwriters' Association, one one Eighter River Road, Hertford, Connecticut assignment.
- 2:27The long shot matter. Expencer count continued, It am three to one dollar
- 2:35even taxi to the Barkley for lunch with Lieutenant Barry. But let me backtrack
- 2:38for a minute. Coming down in the hotel elevator, I kept thinking over
- 2:43what the lieutenant had said, and I disagreed completely. I wasn't a hard
- 2:46sale. It's just that I wasn't an early sale. There were too many
- 2:51angles to the death of missus Palm Quiz, too many things I didn't know
- 2:53yet. I got proof of that the minute I stepped outside the hotel,
- 2:59the white kids said park directly across the street contained a real interesting commendation of
- 3:02people. Eric Palmquis, the doctor's son, and Steffie Lunn, the doctor's
- 3:07nurse. The moment they saw me, they did whatever amateur sleuths does.
- 3:10They drove away as fast as possible, thereby becoming just as conspicuous as a
- 3:15second nose. By the time I reached the parkley, Lieutenant Berry had ordered
- 3:19for both of us. You don't like it, order something else, but
- 3:22it's the best they got, and in fact, it looks pretty good now.
- 3:24As I was saying, yeah, yeah, so Palmquist nurse and his
- 3:28kid or an item you waiting for me to look in price you get up
- 3:30out of the wrong side this morning, Lieutenant. Look, I don't like
- 3:34the smell of this deal anymore than you do. But what does it all
- 3:36add up to. You're sent out here to look into a possible killing?
- 3:38Which happens victim missus palmquiz So, an ex convict, sits in a cell
- 3:44accused of the murder. The accuser and witness, the dead woman's husband.
- 3:47The con insists he's been framed that the husband is the killer, but the
- 3:51husband is well alibi, bringing it down to the set up known as X
- 3:53con versus respected citizen. You know there's more to it than that. Don't
- 3:58give me lessons. You think you've come up with one thing we don't already
- 4:01know about. I got checkouts going on. The doctor, his nurse's son.
- 4:05Everybody within shooting distance of this thing. Don't get any ideas. We're
- 4:09asleep down at the hall. All right, all right, give me a
- 4:12little fill huh Oh Palmquist, nurse Steffie Lunn. Nice kid, never been
- 4:15in trouble at least we couldn't find any What about the boy, Eric Pomquist,
- 4:19typical rich doctor's son, kind of wild sensitive gambles, but Papa can
- 4:24afford it. Also hits the booze too much for a kid that young.
- 4:27What about the doctor's alibi, Laura Constantine, Yeah, I should have skipped
- 4:31that one. Your eyes look like they're whistling and then awful in my age
- 4:35too. All right, Johnny, she's clean. By the way, where
- 4:40does she live. It's a big house in Long Beach. Why no doctor's
- 4:44there? Still a free country. I know people whose doctors live in Patterson
- 4:46New Jersey points. Oh almost forgot. I got the lab report on that
- 4:51anonymous note that started this thing. Anything untraceable, no prints, cheap paper
- 4:57that can be bought anywhere, and the letters were cut from a dozen different
- 5:00magazines. Didn't tell us a thing. What do you mean at didn'ts what
- 5:02it told us. Someone was going to try to collect on a policy.
- 5:12We knocked it around a little while longer, getting no place in particular.
- 5:15Then suddenly I was being paid for a telephone call. Baris raised, eyebrows
- 5:19were eloquence. They made me feel like one of those would be movie stars
- 5:24who have themselves paged in the brown derby so that other would be stars they'll
- 5:27know they're there. I had a funny notion about who might be calling,
- 5:30so I told the waiter I'd taken in the booth out front and left Lieutenant
- 5:33Barry by himself. Johnny Dollar, mister Dollar, I'm so glad I found
- 5:41you. Oh, this is Steffie Lan, doctor palmkus, nurse. Well,
- 5:45the day's picking up. I'm sorry. I hope I didn't interrupt your
- 5:46lunch. You see, I called you a hotel and they told me where
- 5:48you'd gone. I'm sorry. Well, don't apologize. Steffie, a working
- 5:51girl who drives around in a beautiful white cadillact doesn't have to, you know,
- 5:56I'll explain about that. Why should you owe me any explanation. I've
- 6:00got to see you right away. It's terribly important, mister dollar. Where
- 6:04are you? I'm a doctor Palmquis's office. Can you come here now,
- 6:08right away? Okay, I'll be right over, and please don't bring anyone
- 6:12along with you, will you? However you want it? You're calling the
- 6:15shots. Thank you, and hurry. Please expense account Item four citation for
- 6:30speeding twenty five dollars. The common copy reads sixty three miles per hour and
- 6:35a thirty five zone. You ever trying to talk an LA type cop out
- 6:40of a ticket? It's ridiculous. He's always a big, good looking guy
- 6:43who listens seriously while you alibi, but never stops writing. Then he smiles,
- 6:47calls you sir, and hands you the ticket. I couldn't beef about
- 6:50it, though, two reasons. One I deserted, and two if I
- 6:55hadn't been stopped, I'd never have realized I was being tail because the tale
- 6:59knew what he would doing. A heavy set thuggy looking fellow on the black
- 7:01fifty one seed Dan. He circled the block twice while I was getting the
- 7:05ticket. It was right back on me as I stand it out again.
- 7:09He was still there as I pulled him in front of doctor Pomp's office,
- 7:13but he was smart enough to ride on by without even looking at me.
- 7:15I waited to see if he'd come around the block again. He didn't.
- 7:42Yes, sir, what is it? What do you want? Well,
- 7:46now that's the switch. When you call me a few minutes ago. You
- 7:47so you're mistaken. I didn't call wait just a minute, didn't call you.
- 7:53Her words were deliberate, emphatic, but her eyes were suddenly doing the
- 7:56real talking, signaling desperately into the room behind it, trying to tell me
- 8:00that she wasn't alone. But I wasn't the only one who caught the signal.
- 8:03Get away from the doors, Tavy, I mean you, did you
- 8:07hear me? I said, come in, please, hello, Ic,
- 8:13what seems to be the trouble around here? That's far enough. Oh,
- 8:16now come on, why don't you put that thing down? Your family's had
- 8:20enough misery with thirty eighth. Do what he says? Why did you call
- 8:24him, Stephie want somebody's got to help you because of what you're going through
- 8:28and what it's doing to you. Eric, I can't stand any more of
- 8:31it. You're half out of your mind with fear. Now listen to him,
- 8:35Eric, Maybe he can think he can help you, Think anybody can
- 8:39one thing? Sure. That gun's not going to help you any Come on,
- 8:43I can't put it down, no, because nobody tells me what to
- 8:48do, not when I've got a gun. They're afraid to. It's right,
- 8:54they're afraid to. You're both afraid, aren't you. It's nice.
- 9:01It's nice for somebody else to be afraid. I like that. I really
- 9:05liked it. He wasn't even looking at us anymore, just somewhere off into
- 9:11space. Somehow, STEFFI sensed that I was waiting for a chance to grab
- 9:15his gun and motion for me not to. And suddenly I remembered where I'd
- 9:18seen that lost, empty look before. Missus palm Quist, Eric's mother,
- 9:24she'd had her share of that look. Today she died, mister die,
- 9:31help me with him, please. I picked him up, put him on
- 9:35the couch. He had that terrible whiteness that a deep faint brings and Steffy
- 9:39didn't waste any time. She loosened his collar, shoved his head forward,
- 9:43and a few minutes he shut it once, came to, took a deep
- 9:46breath. We made him comfortable on the couch, but you could see that
- 9:50it had been a rough trip for him. He was conscious, but he
- 9:52didn't have the strength to open his eyes. STEFFI just stared at him.
- 10:00You'll be all right now? What's wrong with amsterfie? Why that that thing
- 10:05that just happened? He want the technical name circulatory liability sound impressive? A
- 10:13form of extreme hypertension, nerves after make him faint like that, from anger,
- 10:18from fear. It's a lovely thing for a man to go through.
- 10:22Isn't it well? That that calls for a different kind of medicine, doesn't
- 10:26it? Analysis with the psychiatrist. I didn't now only where Eric. It's
- 10:31going to take a long time, maybe a very long time. But a
- 10:37kid like that, how why fear overpowering, petrifying, fear of what his
- 10:45father of doctor palmquest, Yes, the nice doctor pmquest, the gentle quiet
- 10:52healer, my employer, my father in law, and got married. You
- 11:01want a six weeks ago? Eric is twenty five years old, mister Dada,
- 11:05and he's so afraid of his father was still keeping them marriage a seekt
- 11:07Why Steffie, why is he so afraid of Palmquists? His analyst hasn't been
- 11:11able to get through to that. You expect me to or somebody better.
- 11:16Why did you say that? Because he waved that gun around very convincingly for
- 11:18a scared kid, he never would have fired. Don't you understand he's so
- 11:22frightened he couldn't have made himself do it. I hope you're right. I
- 11:33didn't think it was quite the time to mention one small fact that if Eric
- 11:37Palmquis was incapable of pulling a trigger, it might turn out to be a
- 11:41very good thing for him. As the sole beneficiary of his mother's will,
- 11:43he would soon have one hundred thousand dollars in a nice tidy lump, And
- 11:48if he really was afraid of his father, a piece of money like that
- 11:50could take him a long long way from the parental fold. In fact,
- 11:54no matter which way you turned, you couldn't get away from the logic that
- 11:56Eric Palmquis might be regarded by some parties as the first class suspect in the
- 12:01death of his mother, STEFFI was still pretty much upset when I finally left
- 12:11her, and I must admit that my own mind wasn't exactly at ease.
- 12:15Hoping that the fresh air would help to clear my thoughts, I took my
- 12:18time driving back, and it must have been nearly an hour later when I
- 12:20pulled into the subterrainean garage in my hotel. I guess I was thinking too
- 12:24hard about what had just happened. In any case, I wasn't quick enough.
- 12:28Just as I passed one of the garages big concrete pillars, a figure
- 12:31stepped out from behind. It brought the business end of a colt banging down
- 12:33on my head. The ground climbed up and got me, but not before
- 12:39I had a look at him, my heavy set, thuggy looking friend who
- 12:43tailed me earlier in the day. He could talk too. You're in the
- 12:46wrong time, unk ta he I took a hint. I passed out,
- 13:09Johnny Dollar. This is doctor V Closer returning your call, mister Dollar.
- 13:13Oh yes, doctor, May I ask who recommended me? I inquired about
- 13:16a good psychiatrist that came of you. Yes. Well. The first step
- 13:20is usually an office appointment for a preliminary chain. That's what I had in
- 13:24mind today, but my schedule is quite full. Would tomorrow be suitable?
- 13:30Today would be better. I see that there should be ample time. There
- 13:35should be ample time, but there is. In fact, I'm running out
- 13:37of it fast, very well. Eleven o'clock. That's not for your couch
- 13:52round Special Investigator, Johnny Doaller location in Los Angeles, California, Joe National
- 13:56in the Writer's Association, one one eight Doer River Road, Hartford, Connecticut.
- 14:00Assignment the long shot Matter Johnny Dollar, hypochondriac, complete with assorted medical
- 14:11advisors. I needed one of them before I even got down to the lobby
- 14:15of my hotel. It was a house medic that sid him five five dollars
- 14:18would patch me up yesterday after a thug had worked me over in the hotel
- 14:22garage. Now came check up time, and the doctor was a fuss and
- 14:26he disapproved of me. Hold still now, hold still? Yeah, yeah,
- 14:28but that's my head you're digging in. I wouldn't have to if somebody
- 14:31else hadn't split it open. There. Hey, well it looks a little
- 14:35better. It don't sound so enthusiastic. Walking into a wall. So the
- 14:39best thing I can think of at the moment likely story Hold still now,
- 14:43I want to redress that wound on the other side. Hold still, temper,
- 14:46temper funny. He was working on the outside of my head, but
- 14:54it was the inside that ate most. There were reasons, lots of them,
- 14:58like the murder of a sick old woman the same day i'd arrived,
- 15:01and the anonymous note that had warned of it, like the victim's husband and
- 15:05an ex convict accusing each other of committing the crime. It was a rough
- 15:09one, real rough, because the picture kept changing from minute to minute,
- 15:11and my company was on the hook for one hundred thousand dollars. At eleven
- 15:20o'clock, I sat across the desk from doctor Hans van Klauser, psychiatrist in
- 15:22his Beverly Hills office. He was small, spectacle and charming levi Ines.
- 15:28More important, he was the analyst who was tweeting Eric Palmquist, the murdered
- 15:31woman's son. Oh no, mister dollar afraid I owe you an apology.
- 15:37Doctor. I deceived you a little bit. I'm not exactly here. As
- 15:41a patient, everyone finds it difficult to begin. Mister Dona, you suppose
- 15:45we hear some of the medical history. First, I tell you we're off
- 15:48on the wrong foot, doctor, and it's my fault. Here, take
- 15:52a look at these my credentials. I see that you hardly hears a patient
- 15:58about a patient. Let's say, my dear mister Dollar, I think you
- 16:02know very well that I can reveal nothing which is told to me in this
- 16:06room. I know that. Then the purpose of this visit, I just
- 16:08want answers from a competent authority about a certain illness. I won't bring personalities
- 16:14into it. It's important, doctor, And the particular illness something called circulatorial
- 16:21ability. You know that it's a form of extremely provoked hypotension. Yeah,
- 16:26that much I do. Hypotension is a result of anxieties. The anxieties may
- 16:32be real or of fencied, but the hypotension is very genuine, indeed,
- 16:37and very dangerous, dangerous to the extent that a man could turn to violence,
- 16:41maybe killed if sufficiently aroused. Yes, it has happened. I see,
- 16:47Thank you, thank you very much. Idam seven tenth cents recklessly squatted
- 16:56on a phone call in my hotel to check for messages. There was one
- 17:00Lieutenant Berry of the La Police Department would like to see me at my convenience?
- 17:03Would I? I? Would you get practically nowhere? Ignoring police lieutenants,
- 17:08He stared at the bandage on my head and my assorted cuts and bruises,
- 17:11and his opening line was quite inspired. What happened to you? Somebody
- 17:18was pretty fast with a gun burrow last night? Where did it happen?
- 17:19Garage under my hotel? It seems he didn't like my being in town.
- 17:23You get a look at him enough. I want to go through the mug
- 17:26book. No, I'll catch up with him someday. Besides, whoever was
- 17:30paying him is the interesting one. Have it your own way now. You
- 17:34didn't call me all the way down here for laughs, lieutenant? Anything special
- 17:37on your mind? Lonnie Miller? The guy we got sitting in cell number
- 17:41eight A, the prowler who shot Missus Palmquist. So, doctor Palmquist,
- 17:45he isn't the only one, Johnny, not anymore? What? Yeah?
- 17:48We finally traced the murder weapon. It was bought at a pawn shop in
- 17:52Burbank. The pawnbroker positively identified a mug shot of the buyer, Lonnie Miller.
- 18:03Police identification evidence is a pretty tough thing to ignore, but I was
- 18:07still what the lieutenant called a hard sale. It wasn't stubbornness, simply the
- 18:11fact that I'm very large For motivation. It can be as wild as welly
- 18:15as they come, but it's got to be there somewhere, and somehow,
- 18:18with so many good ones around. The worn faded man in sali Edda didn't
- 18:22write in that company. I asked the lieutenant for a couple of minutes with
- 18:26Lennie Millery. He shook his head as though he felt sorry for me,
- 18:29But okay, the visit anyway. Well, you're angry about something, mister
- 18:41Doller. I can tell it's in your face. Yeah, about a story
- 18:45you told me the other day about doctor Palmquiz giving you a lift, keeping
- 18:49you around town, and using you as a patsy so he could kill his
- 18:52wife. You want to change any of it? You asking if I lied?
- 18:56Mister? Is that that's it? He's figured to be like this sooner
- 19:02or later? Goodbye, mister, Come on, Miller, talk to me.
- 19:07I think I'd lie to the only man who even looked like he believed
- 19:10me. You still have an answer, mister, mister. Don't you think
- 19:15I know? I haven't got a chance that I'm dead. I don't even
- 19:18care anymore. But I didn't lie, not one word. A Birdbank pawn
- 19:23broker says you did, says you bought the murder gun from him. I've
- 19:27never even been in bird Bank. I swear to you. How could I
- 19:32have bought the gun? He identified a picture of you, says you showed
- 19:33your driver's license as identification. Where is your license? Billy in my wallet?
- 19:40Downstairs? They took everything when they booked me, mister Dollar. Tell
- 19:45it to me all over again, Miller, from the minute doctor Palmquist gave
- 19:49you the lift, step by step, every single detail. Tell it to
- 19:53me, and slowly, haldingly, the words just kind of fell out of
- 20:03his mouth in a tired, hopeless fashion. It was the same story he
- 20:06told so many times. Now. I had reason for making him go through
- 20:10it, some small, hazy idea that was tugging at the back of my
- 20:14brain, jagged, undeveloped, but an idea. When I left the sale,
- 20:18I had Miller's permission to look at his wallet. The police custodian showed
- 20:21it to me five minutes after that. The license wasn't there. Expenser con
- 20:29Eidam made ten cents. An LA newspaper three days old, one which played
- 20:33up the Palmquist killing. Big contained pictures of both doctor Palmquiz grieving husband and
- 20:37Lonnie Miller suspected killer, purpose to be used in backtracking. The drive down
- 20:45to Long Beach could have been pleasant, sun ocean or relaxing type day,
- 20:49But not for me, not with what was going on inside my head.
- 20:53Even the soft breeze coming in off the Pacific couldn't sweep the pieces together for
- 20:57me. Sure, for a few seconds everything would make sense, Then a
- 21:02moment later, some small fact would make the whole theory collapse. I know
- 21:06one thing, though. If this whole deal was a frame, it was
- 21:08a great one, a work of art, something to be admired, provided
- 21:11your name was neither Lonnie Miller or National Underwriters. About six miles inside of
- 21:18Long Beach, I found what I was looking for, the little tacos joint,
- 21:22where Miller claimed he and doctor Palmquist that stop for coffee. All,
- 21:34Amigo, you like some tacos? Sure they sit down, It won't be
- 21:38a minute on a round. You're looking at him, amgo Irving Gonzalis owner
- 21:45Irving. Sure I had it changed nobody could pronounce Plutarco Gonzalis. See your
- 21:52point, He doesn't bit make problems for your customers in business. Yeah,
- 21:57when are you gonna work up to ask him questions? Amigo? I can
- 22:03make that because blindfolded, and I can tell a cop the same way.
- 22:07Well, you're not too far wrong. I want to take a look at
- 22:11this newspaper. Either of these men have ever been in here? And the
- 22:15third Victor pan quiz lonely mirror? Oh, I read about that killing?
- 22:22Very interesting? Yeah, what about it? Irving? What about what these
- 22:26men have they ever been in here alone together anytime? Look kind of familiar.
- 22:33But maybe it's only because I see him in the papers. You know
- 22:36the best you can do. Look at me, though, you stand behind
- 22:40a counter all day and everybody looks like everybody else. You wouldn't want me
- 22:45to make a guess, and that's all I'd be doing guessing. No,
- 22:49I wouldn't want that nice and hot. Eat your tacos, amigo. Thanks
- 22:56anyway, I'll skipping this turn. You know something I don't blame you.
- 23:03Look at this bild bells peels. I eat him by the dozen. Do
- 23:07you know why you're amigo? There's this about the racket. You try,
- 23:17you strike out. You can't waste time thinking about it. You get onto
- 23:19the next step, the step. Laura Consttine, doctor Palmqois, lovely Alibi.
- 23:22The night of his wife's death. Her house was only a few miles
- 23:26out of Long Beach. It seemed logical to head for it. I reached
- 23:30it about twenty minutes later. A large, old fashion and seemingly deserted house
- 23:33in a promontory that jutted out into the Pacific. Strike out number two.
- 23:37The hostile iron fence that circle it made its point. Keep out, so
- 23:41I did. Trespassing applies to everyone. From where I stood, I couldn't
- 23:45identify the car that suddenly roared away from the back of the house, but
- 23:48one thing was obvious. The driver was in a hurry, and I was
- 23:52getting nowhere. I decided to head back to town. It happened five minutes
- 24:00later as I rounded a curve on my way back to the Pacific Coast Highway.
- 24:06Choice the Pacific on one side, granted cliffs on the other. I
- 24:10picked the cliffs. Funny what your mind does at moments like that. I
- 24:22remember looking at the mashed inside of the car and wondering which company carried the
- 24:26insurance policy. Then I thought of how good a marksman a man must be
- 24:32to pick off a tire from any of those cliffs. And then I remembered
- 24:34still another thing. Hadn't I been told about someone who was a great shot
- 24:40who made it a rule to hunt two months out of the year, no
- 24:41matter how busy he was? Sure a highly respected citizen named doctor Victor Palmquitz.
- 25:03Now here's our star to tell you about the final exciting episode of this
- 25:06week's story tomorrow. You want to hide something, put it in plain view
- 25:10only. Don't go overboard on the system. If you're hiding a murder.
- 25:12Join us, won't you? Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. Yours Truly Johnny
- 25:19Dollar is starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed in Hollywood, written by Tony Barrett.
- 25:25It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone. Be sure to join us
- 25:29tomorrow night at same time and station for the next exciting episode of Yours Truly
- 25:33Johnny Dollar. Roy Rowan speaking welcome back. Well. I love that he
- 27:18schedules an appointment with a psychiatrist to ask one question. He probably could have
- 27:25gone to the library and looked up maybe I'm being biased by our information age,
- 27:32but that was a lot. I have to say that I'm pretty pleased
- 27:37with the direction this particular episode is taking. I was really thinking that this
- 27:44was not going to be very interesting based on the first two parts, but
- 27:48they put in quite a few little wrinkles and now it'll be a challenge to
- 27:53wrap everything up in part five. So good show, so far, all
- 28:00right. Listener comments and feedback Bob comments over on the website My wife loves
- 28:07You. I've always traveled extensively through our twenty seven years of marriage and fell
- 28:12into the bad habit of having the TV on at night to drown out motel
- 28:17noises so I could sleep. That translated to not being able to fall asleep
- 28:21at home without the TV on, a major contention with my fine wife.
- 28:25Since I found your website and can download yours, truly, Johnny Dollar,
- 28:29I put my headset on, and five minutes later I'm sawing logs all the
- 28:33episodes ought to last me for decades. I'll be sending a donation next week
- 28:37for your website. Keep up the good work, and thank you for all
- 28:40that you do well. Thanks so much, Bob, and glad to contribute
- 28:45to Domestic Tranquility, and we have a review over in the Amazon App Store
- 28:52for Marborie Fagan. She writes, I have had this app on my iPhone
- 29:00for a couple years. After switching last week on Android, it was one
- 29:04of the first apps I loaded on my new phone. Well, thanks so
- 29:08much. I appreciate that, particularly the cross platform loyalty. And if you
- 29:12do have Android, we're not in the Google Android App Store, but if
- 29:18you download the Amazon App Store you're able to go ahead and access the great
- 29:26detectives of old time radio. Always consistently a high seller over there. We're
- 29:32currently, as of this recording, number five in the podcast category of apps
- 29:38on Amazon. So very gratified by that, and thanks to everyone who's purchased
- 29:44the app there. All right, Well, that will do it for today.
- 29:48We'll be back tomorrow with Nick Carter, and then join us back here
