Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / First photo of Earth from Artemis II mission released
Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: You're looking at the first pictures of Earth taken by
- 0:04Speaker 1: Artemis two commander Reed Weisman, took from the Orion capsule.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen said the crew was quote glued
- 0:12Speaker 1: to the window. Mission specialist Christina Cook added, there's quote
- 0:15Speaker 1: nothing that prepares you for the view. The photos were
- 0:18Speaker 1: taken shortly after the four astronauts completed their translunar injection
- 0:21Speaker 1: burn last night. That's when the crew fired their engine
- 0:24Speaker 1: for nearly six minutes to boost the ship's velocity to
- 0:27Speaker 1: twenty four thousand, five hundred miles an hour, the speed
- 0:30Speaker 1: required to get out of Earth's gravitational grasp. NASA says
- 0:34Speaker 1: the astronauts are in good spirits. This afternoon, they woke
- 0:36Speaker 1: up to in a day dream by the Freddie Jones Band.
- 0:39Speaker 1: They were able to exercise and speak to their families.
- 0:41Speaker 1: The crew is currently more than one hundred and forty
- 0:44Speaker 1: nine thousand miles from the Moon, traveling at a speed
- 0:47Speaker 1: of about thirty four hundred miles an hour. It's almost
- 0:50Speaker 1: five times faster than the speed of sound. Earlier, CBS
- 0:53Speaker 1: new Senior National correspondent Mark Straussman asked NASA about the
- 0:57Speaker 1: significance of the crews. Next major milestone Monday's lunar flyby.
- 1:02Speaker 2: The whole point is to go back to the moon.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Whole point of this mission is a campaign to get
- 1:06Speaker 2: back to the Moon. And the being able to see
- 1:12Speaker 2: with human eyes the lunar surface is a huge milestone, right,
- 1:16Speaker 2: and that just articulates the point. You know that we're
- 1:20Speaker 2: going back to the moon. We're going to stay there.
- 1:22Speaker 1: And Mark Strasman joins us now from the Johnson Space
- 1:24Speaker 1: Center in Houston. Thank you so much for being here.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Love this suit. So before we get to that milestone,
- 1:29Speaker 1: what did the crew do on board Oryan today and
- 1:32Speaker 1: why did they skip that extra burn?
- 1:36Speaker 3: Well, let's skip the extra burn, lindsay, essentially because this
- 1:39Speaker 3: is a flight test and this capsule is just acing it.
- 1:42Speaker 3: They're it's acing that test, and so they just didn't
- 1:45Speaker 3: see they need to do it. But look, I want
- 1:47Speaker 3: to give you a little tour here. This is Building nine.
- 1:49Speaker 3: This is the training center at Johnson Space Center. There's
- 1:51Speaker 3: a mock, there's a Mack space station, there's a mock
- 1:55Speaker 3: Sawyer's capsule, and this is the mach O Ryan capsule.
- 1:57Speaker 3: This this true of Artemis two would have has been
- 2:00Speaker 3: in here, training, getting ready for this mission, getting used
- 2:04Speaker 3: to the configuration. If you come up here, you can
- 2:06Speaker 3: see how many weeks to launch, zero weeks to launch,
- 2:09Speaker 3: because they're already out in space. And this is of
- 2:12Speaker 3: course an amazing achievement that has taken nass of years
- 2:17Speaker 3: to get to this moment. With each passing second, the
- 2:20Speaker 3: crew of Artemis two leaves the rest of us farther
- 2:23Speaker 3: behind and gets closer to the Moon. And if you
- 2:26Speaker 3: saw the pictures that they sent back of Earth, that
- 2:30Speaker 3: one big picture of Earth that was basically a group
- 2:33Speaker 3: shot of all of us except for the four of them,
- 2:35Speaker 3: And it has really been some stunning images already. And lindsay,
- 2:40Speaker 3: I'm just looking forward to seeing what's coming up in
- 2:42Speaker 3: the days ahead.
- 2:43Speaker 1: And you know, astronauts they're just like us, they're humans too,
- 2:47Speaker 1: So I love learning about all the small details that
- 2:50Speaker 1: seem small but are actually quite important. So the toilet
- 2:53Speaker 1: issue got fixed. It was cold in the cabin sixty
- 2:56Speaker 1: five degrees. They've warmed it up, They've had some trash,
- 2:58Speaker 1: they've had to figure out where to put. I mean,
- 3:01Speaker 1: this is essentially a mission. This is the mission to
- 3:03Speaker 1: figure out how to live there.
- 3:06Speaker 3: It is a mission to figure out how to live there.
- 3:08Speaker 3: And let me show you something else too. It's a
- 3:09Speaker 3: mission to figure out how to live Dwayne will walk
- 3:11Speaker 3: over here, mission to figure out how to live there.
- 3:13Speaker 3: But remember too, this is there's a half million mile
- 3:16Speaker 3: road trip where it's the size and inside of two
- 3:18Speaker 3: minivans and nobody can get out. I mean, it sounds awful,
- 3:21Speaker 3: and yet they're thrilled to be here. You can see
- 3:23Speaker 3: this shot here of the four astronauts Wiseman Hansen and
- 3:27Speaker 3: over here Victor Glover and Christina Cook, and some of
- 3:29Speaker 3: the some of the watchwords of this trip, you know,
- 3:32Speaker 3: responsibility to teamwork, vigilons, confidence, toughness, discipline. They're going to
- 3:35Speaker 3: need all of that stuff. When you consider that again,
- 3:39Speaker 3: they're they're with each other in a tightly control space
- 3:43Speaker 3: for nine days and a half million miles and the
- 3:46Speaker 3: condition are not awful, but they're not ideal either, and
- 3:50Speaker 3: so it's it's all of these virtues are going to
- 3:53Speaker 3: come into play to have a successful trip on a
- 3:55Speaker 3: personal level, that's for sure. And it can't be the views.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Your question was about that little fly by, So we
- 4:01Speaker 1: also learned there's going to be a comms blackout for
- 4:03Speaker 1: forty minutes. NASA didn't seem concerned about that. Essentially, it's
- 4:06Speaker 1: my understanding that Oriyan's like on cruise control until it
- 4:09Speaker 1: gets back to the front of the Moon, Physics is
- 4:12Speaker 1: going to do its job. What will the crew be
- 4:14Speaker 1: doing during that far side flyby.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Taking a lot of pictures and not with their iPhones.
- 4:21Speaker 3: They are going to be taking a lot of pictures
- 4:22Speaker 3: with special cameras. When I say a lot, I mean
- 4:25Speaker 3: like ten thousand pictures that they're hoping to take on
- 4:27Speaker 3: the far side of the Moon. And they will also
- 4:30Speaker 3: be using their eyes as scientific instruments of their own.
- 4:34Speaker 3: I mean they want to make observations. They will see
- 4:36Speaker 3: parts of the Moon perhaps that no human has seen before,
- 4:39Speaker 3: and so the images that capture, the memories that they
- 4:42Speaker 3: return with are all going to be a big help
- 4:46Speaker 3: to NASA when this crew comes back, when this mission
- 4:49Speaker 3: is over, as the Space Agency gets ready for an
- 4:53Speaker 3: eventual moon landing in early twenty twenty eight, and that
- 4:55Speaker 3: will be right now with Artemis four, lindsay, all right, your.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Camera, got the camera on the shoulder, anything else you
- 5:01Speaker 1: want to show us before we good night?
- 5:03Speaker 3: You Let's see I Huh. You can just see all
- 5:10Speaker 3: the all the hardware here, uh about the capsule and
- 5:13Speaker 3: the signs of the monitors that you can see inside
- 5:16Speaker 3: the capsule itself. All of this stuff is really Oh
- 5:21Speaker 3: there's a bathroom underneath. Okay, that's where the bathroom was,
- 5:27Speaker 3: because you brought up it was funny when they had
- 5:29Speaker 3: the when they had the uh, the toilet issue. Uh,
- 5:33Speaker 3: Christina Cook was joking that she fixed it, and she
- 5:35Speaker 3: was joking that she was happy to be the space plumber,
- 5:38Speaker 3: and uh, I thought that was I thought that was funny.
- 5:40Speaker 3: And you know, three guys standing around and it takes
- 5:43Speaker 3: the woman to fix the toilet, you know. So you
- 5:46Speaker 3: know this, right, go figure, right, go figure, go figure.
- 5:49Speaker 3: She's the problem solver.
- 5:51Speaker 1: We try to tell you, guys, you just don't listen.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Mark Strap's been picked so much
