- 0:00Speaker 1: Yes, let's talk to you god women's basketball. On this
- 0:02Speaker 1: Friday night, after three weeks of hockey on the radio,
- 0:05Speaker 1: we're gonna talk women's college basketball and a rare Friday
- 0:08Speaker 1: night live show. I don't know if we've ever done
- 0:10Speaker 1: a live Friday show before with coach gin Oriama. We're
- 0:13Speaker 1: live at Cafe or here in Manchester. Great to have
- 0:15Speaker 1: you with us as we get set for Yukon Tennessee
- 0:19Speaker 1: this weekend and coming off just a fun game the
- 0:23Speaker 1: other night against Xavier.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Good to see you, by the way.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Thanks for coming in.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Happy to be here.
- 0:29Speaker 1: How's you got a guest here? You guys see, Jim
- 0:32Speaker 1: Foster's down the other end there, right, coach, how you doing.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yeah, Jim Foster's here.
- 0:35Speaker 1: He was at the game the other night, right.
- 0:37Speaker 3: He was at the game the other night. Yeah. Yeah,
- 0:40Speaker 3: and his wife Donna, they're sitting up there. He just
- 0:44Speaker 3: moved to Pennsylvania, so it's an easy drive up here
- 0:47Speaker 3: now instead of flying in from Colorado or Utah where
- 0:52Speaker 3: he was living.
- 0:54Speaker 2: So yeah, it's good to have him around. Yeah.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Yeah, fun game the other night, you know, it's funny.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Talked about Ali and her development in the pregame show.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Not knowing that she was going to make five threes
- 1:06Speaker 1: in the first half. I think four of those came
- 1:09Speaker 1: in the second quarter. She made Yukon's first three and
- 1:11Speaker 1: then her own little personal run on the fourth quarter
- 1:13Speaker 1: to tie the school record for most threes in a
- 1:17Speaker 1: game ten, most threes every gample ten and off you went.
- 1:23Speaker 1: But that just topped the bottom. And it wasn't just Dali.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Ashland shaded nine steals, Kaylee Heckle off the bench with
- 1:30Speaker 1: eight boards and eight eight assists. Just a good, solid
- 1:33Speaker 1: all around effort by your team.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Yeah, it didn't start particularly well. You know, you come
- 1:42Speaker 3: out and uh, you know, like when you see when
- 1:48Speaker 3: you see a shoot the ball, you think, wow, they're
- 1:51Speaker 3: you know, they're a pretty good shooting team. They're leading
- 1:54Speaker 3: the country in three point field goal percentage. You know
- 1:56Speaker 3: that's pretty good. And you start the game, oh for nine.
- 2:02Speaker 3: You know it. It's weird because you're not used to
- 2:07Speaker 3: seeing that. So you needed somebody to just come in
- 2:11Speaker 3: and make one. I think once you make one, then
- 2:13Speaker 3: you can make a couple. But you know, we didn't
- 2:17Speaker 3: make any. I don't know that defensively.
- 2:20Speaker 2: We were we were really good either.
- 2:22Speaker 3: So there's there was a lot to be desired in that,
- 2:26Speaker 3: you know, most of that first quarter.
- 2:29Speaker 2: But like you said, you know.
- 2:30Speaker 3: You you know, you go to the band, you bring
- 2:33Speaker 3: a couple of people in, they shake things up a
- 2:34Speaker 3: little bit. You know, we knew it would be a
- 2:36Speaker 3: little bit different not being able to bring Blanca in
- 2:40Speaker 3: to kind of.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Start stir upot a little bit.
- 2:43Speaker 3: So, uh, Ali's been playing great and and she had
- 2:48Speaker 3: a great she had a great night, and the kids
- 2:50Speaker 3: all had a fun time watching her do what she did.
- 2:54Speaker 3: And uh, you know, and they all chipped in, you know,
- 3:00Speaker 3: as you said, you know, Hecko had a great game.
- 3:05Speaker 3: I thought a great game, and the Ash had a
- 3:08Speaker 3: great game. You know, those guys they do they do
- 3:12Speaker 3: what they do best, and they do it pretty much
- 3:14Speaker 3: every night. But you know, it's you know, it's crazy,
- 3:19Speaker 3: is we don't even like we don't even talk about
- 3:26Speaker 3: Sarah Strong anymore. That's like we're all excited about what
- 3:33Speaker 3: everybody's doing. You mentioned everybody, but the kid will led
- 3:35Speaker 3: to you know, I was there, you know, because we
- 3:38Speaker 3: just come to expect her to be that that good
- 3:42Speaker 3: every night. You know, so she rarely has it off night, No,
- 3:47Speaker 3: she does not, She does not she doesn't have an
- 3:49Speaker 3: off night. Generally speaking, she doesn't have off days at practice.
- 3:55Speaker 3: She's pretty pretty consistent when it comes to and if
- 4:00Speaker 3: we can't get a bucket, then we're going to go
- 4:03Speaker 3: to her. I think we went over nine we started.
- 4:07Speaker 3: I think she took like the next four or five shots.
- 4:10Speaker 3: I don't know exactly how many.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Yeah, she had twelve over twenty five for the first time.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Yeah, we had a time out and said nobody's allowed
- 4:17Speaker 3: to shoot the ball until Sarah says you can, So
- 4:22Speaker 3: you know, we got back on track.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Yeah, you Mailkay, you mentioned the defense. How different was
- 4:27Speaker 1: the defensive effort early versus what you saw Saturday where
- 4:31Speaker 1: you had to get on your team a little bit?
- 4:34Speaker 3: No, it was okay, it was different. We're a little
- 4:38Speaker 3: bit confused right now on something, so we needed to
- 4:40Speaker 3: clear that up today and again tomorrow and next week.
- 4:45Speaker 3: There are some things that we do really really well
- 4:47Speaker 3: when we're with our defensive pressure. There's some things that
- 4:50Speaker 3: we still struggle with at times. And when it's good,
- 4:54Speaker 3: it's really good, and when it's not, you know, you
- 4:58Speaker 3: give up some easy bucket and but you know we're
- 5:03Speaker 3: playing hard. They compete really hard, you know, so as
- 5:06Speaker 3: long as we do that, you know, we can fix
- 5:08Speaker 3: the other stuff. You know, you can't fix if you're
- 5:11Speaker 3: not competing, if you're not playing hard.
- 5:14Speaker 2: That's the you know, that's the killer of most teams, right.
- 5:18Speaker 1: And the two things, and you've harped on this forever,
- 5:21Speaker 1: the two things that stand out about what Sarah did
- 5:23Speaker 1: and what Ali did, they're both efficient. Sarah was tenle fourteen.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Ali was tenle fourteen from three eleven to fifteen. For
- 5:30Speaker 1: the game, that's what you want, that's what you're always
- 5:32Speaker 1: looking for.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Yeah, we're talking to somebody today about this that if
- 5:39Speaker 3: you come to Connecticut, you know a couple of things. One,
- 5:45Speaker 3: you're never going to lead the country and scoring because
- 5:47Speaker 3: you're never going to get enough shots. Now, if Ali
- 5:50Speaker 3: did this every night, she would lead the country and scoring.
- 5:53Speaker 3: But you're not going to get enough shots. And two,
- 5:57Speaker 3: you learn that the shots you do get, you better
- 5:59Speaker 3: make them because you know we have you know, let's
- 6:04Speaker 3: say we have three or four really good offensive players
- 6:06Speaker 3: out on the floor, and the guys that are making
- 6:09Speaker 3: shots are going to get the most shots for the
- 6:11Speaker 3: most part.
- 6:12Speaker 2: So you learn to be efficient.
- 6:14Speaker 3: You learn how to score twenty points on ten shots
- 6:17Speaker 3: twelve shots, And I said before, like on other schools,
- 6:21Speaker 3: kids need twenty shots to score twelve points. So you're
- 6:26Speaker 3: not going to get twenty shots at Connecticut. So kids
- 6:30Speaker 3: work really hard, like I got to make the shots
- 6:32Speaker 3: I get, and we pride ourselves in them. Page especially
- 6:37Speaker 3: last year, was adamant about that. You know, she was
- 6:40Speaker 3: really upset that there were kids around the country were
- 6:44Speaker 3: getting so much attention when the volume of shots that
- 6:48Speaker 3: they took was off the charts, and you know, she
- 6:52Speaker 3: felt like, my efficiency.
- 6:56Speaker 2: It's like people don't value that anymore. I said, well,
- 6:59Speaker 2: we do. Know that's all that matters.
- 7:03Speaker 3: And even now, you you you look at our team
- 7:06Speaker 3: and you look back to last year, you Page just
- 7:11Speaker 3: doesn't miss open shots. You know, she's not going to
- 7:15Speaker 3: go in a game and miss five in a row.
- 7:17Speaker 3: That's just not going to happen. So when you have that,
- 7:20Speaker 3: you know, and now Sarah's like that for the most part,
- 7:23Speaker 3: you know, you feel like that's you know, the drought's
- 7:26Speaker 3: not going to last a long time, right.
- 7:28Speaker 2: But yeah, we're lucky, you know, we're lucky in that respect.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure, all right, we'll take our first break.
- 7:35Speaker 1: We're here with Gito to the top of the hour,
- 7:37Speaker 1: and of course we'll do the after show with the
- 7:38Speaker 1: folks here at Cafe Era. Thanks for joining us on
- 7:41Speaker 1: the radio. This is the you kind of women's basketball
- 7:43Speaker 1: coaches show on their field. Back in a minute.
