- 0:00Welcome to the Daily Audio Torah. Today is July 10th.
- 0:05Now let's continue our journey reading through the entire Bible in one year.
- 0:10This week we are reading from the New Living Translation for the Old Testament and for the New Testament.
- 0:17Numbers 21, 18-30
- 0:23Sing of this well which princes dug, which great leaders hollowed out with their scepters and staffs.
- 0:30Then the Israelites left the wilderness and proceeded on through Matanah, Nahalil, and Bemath.
- 0:37After that they went to the valley in Moab where Pisgah Peak overlooks the wasteland.
- 0:42The Israelites sent ambassadors to King Sihon of the Amorites with this message.
- 0:48Let us travel through your land. We will be careful not to go through your fields and vineyards.
- 0:54We won't even drink water from your wells.
- 0:57We will stay on the king's road until we have passed through your territory.
- 1:03But King Sihon refused to let them cross his territory.
- 1:09Instead he mobilized his entire army and attacked Israel in the wilderness engaging them in battle at Jahaz.
- 1:17But the Israelites slaughtered them with their swords and occupied their land from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River.
- 1:24They went only as far as the Ammonite border because the boundary of the Ammonites was fortified.
- 1:30So Israel captured all the towns of the Amorites and settled in them including the city of Heshbon and its surrounding villages.
- 1:40Heshbon had been the capital of King Sihon of the Amorites.
- 1:45He had defeated a former Moabite king and seized all his land as far as the Arnon River.
- 1:52Therefore the ancient poets wrote this about him.
- 1:55Come to Heshbon and let it be rebuilt.
- 1:58Let the city of Sihon be restored.
- 2:01A fire flamed forth from Heshbon, a blaze from the city of Sihon.
- 2:06It burned the city of Ar in Moab.
- 2:09It destroyed the rulers of the Arnon Heights.
- 2:12What sorrow awaits you, O people of Moab.
- 2:15You are finished, O worshippers of Chemesh.
- 2:19Chemesh has left his sons as refugees, his daughters as captives of Sihon, the Amorite king.
- 2:26We have utterly destroyed them from Heshbon to Debon.
- 2:30We have completely wiped them out as far away as Nofah and Mediba.
- 2:431 Chronicles 9, 1-10, 14
- 2:51All Israel was listed in the genealogical record in the book of the kings of Israel.
- 2:57The people of Judah were exiled to Babylon because they were unfaithful to the Lord.
- 3:02The first to return to their property in their former towns were common people.
- 3:07With them came some of the priests, Levites, and temple assistants.
- 3:11People from the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh came and settled in Jerusalem.
- 3:17One family that returned was that of Uthai, son of Amihud, son of Amri, son of Imri, son of Bani, a descendant of Perez, son of Judah.
- 3:28Others returned from the Shilonite clan, including Esaiah, the oldest, and his sons.
- 3:34From the Zerahite clan, Jeul returned with his relatives.
- 3:38In all, 690 families from the tribe of Judah returned.
- 3:43From the tribe of Benjamin came Salu, son of Meshulam, son of Hodaviah, son of Hassanuah,
- 3:50Ibniah, son of Jeroham, Elah, son of Uzzi, son of Mikri, Meshulam, son of Shepetiah, son of Reul, son of Ibnijah.
- 4:01These men were all leaders of clans, and they were listed in their tribal genealogy.
- 4:07In all, 956 families from the tribe of Benjamin returned.
- 4:13Among the tribes who returned were Jediah, Jehoirib, Jachin, Azariah, son of Hilkiah, son of Meshulam, son of Zadok, son of Merioth, son of Ahitu.
- 4:25Azariah was the chief officer of the house of God.
- 4:29Other returning priests were Adiah, son of Jeroham, son of Pashur, son of Malkijah, and Massah, son of Adiel, son of Zerah, son of Meshulam, son of Meshulameth, son of Emer.
- 4:43In all, 1,760 priests returned.
- 4:47They were heads of clans and very able men.
- 4:50They were responsible for ministering at the house of God.
- 4:54The Levites who returned were Shemaiah, son of Hashub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, a descendant of Merari, Bakbakar, Heresh, Galal, Madaniah, son of Micah, son of Zichri, son of Asaph,
- 5:10Obadiah, son of Shemaiah, son of Galal, son of Jethuden, and Barakiah, son of Asah, son of Elkanah, who lived in the area of Nediphah.
- 5:20The gatekeepers who returned were Shalom, Akub, Talmon, Ahimon, and their relatives.
- 5:26Shalom was the chief gatekeeper.
- 5:28Prior to this time, they were responsible for the king's gate on the east side.
- 5:33These men served as gatekeepers for the camps of the Levites.
- 5:37Shalom was the son of Kor, a descendant of Abiasaph, from the clan of Korah.
- 5:43He and his relatives, the Korahites, were responsible for guarding the entrance to the sanctuary, just as their ancestors had guarded the tabernacle in the camp of the Lord.
- 5:54Phineas, son of Eleazar, had been in charge of the gatekeepers in earlier times, and the Lord had been with him.
- 6:01And later, Zechariah, son of Meshelemiah, had been responsible for guarding the entrance to the tabernacle.
- 6:11In all, there were 212 gatekeepers in those days, and they were listed by genealogies in their villages.
- 6:19David and Samuel the Seer had appointed their ancestors because they were reliable men.
- 6:25These gatekeepers and their descendants, by their divisions, were responsible for guarding the entrance to the house of the Lord, the house that was formerly a tent.
- 6:36The gatekeepers were stationed on all four sides, east, west, north, and south.
- 6:42From time to time, their relatives in the villages came to share their duties for seven-day periods.
- 6:48The four chief gatekeepers, all Levites, were in an office of great trust, for they were responsible for the rooms and treasuries at the house of God.
- 6:59They would spend the night around the house of God, since it was their duty to guard it.
- 7:04It was also their job to open the gates every morning.
- 7:08Some of the gatekeepers were assigned to care for the various utensils used in worship.
- 7:13They checked them in and out to avoid any loss.
- 7:17Others were responsible for the furnishings, the items in the sanctuary, and the supplies, such as choice flour, wine, olive oil, incense, and spices.
- 7:28But it was the priests who prepared the spices and incense.
- 7:32Mattityah, a Levite, and the oldest son of Shalom the Korathite, was entrusted with baking the bread used in the offerings.
- 7:42And some members of the clan of Kohath were in charge of preparing the bread to be set on the table each Sabbath day.
- 7:49The musicians, all prominent Levites, lived at the temple.
- 7:54They were exempt from other responsibilities there, since they were on duty at all hours.
- 7:59All these men lived in Jerusalem.
- 8:02They were the heads of Levite families and were listed as prominent leaders in their tribal genealogy.
- 8:08Jeel, the father of Gibeon, lived in Gibeon.
- 8:12His wife's name was Maka, and his oldest son was named Abdon.
- 8:16Jeel's other sons were Zur, Kish, Baal, Nur, Nadab, Gidor, Ahio, Zechariah, and Mikloth.
- 8:24Mikloth was the father of Shemim.
- 8:27All these families lived near each other in Jerusalem.
- 8:31Nur was the father of Kish.
- 8:33Kish was the father of Saul.
- 8:35Saul was the father of Jonathan, Malkishua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.
- 8:41Jonathan was the father of Meribahel.
- 8:43Meribahel was the father of Micah.
- 8:45The sons of Micah were Python, Melech, Teriah, and Ahaz.
- 8:50Ahaz was the father of Jadah.
- 8:52Jadah was the father of Elimath, Asmaveth, and Zimri.
- 8:57Zimri was the father of Mosah.
- 8:59Mosah was the father of Baniah.
- 9:01Baniah's son was Rephiah.
- 9:03Rephiah's son was Eliesa.
- 9:05Eliesa's son was Azel.
- 9:08Azel had six sons, and their names were Azricum, Bokaru, Ishmael, Sharia, Obadiah, and Hanun.
- 9:16These were the sons of Azel.
- 9:18Now the Philistines attacked Israel, forcing the Israelites to flee.
- 9:23Many were slaughtered on the slopes of Mount Gilboa.
- 9:26The Philistines closed in on Saul and his sons, and they killed three of his sons,
- 9:31Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malkishua.
- 9:35The fighting grew very fierce around Saul, and the Philistine archers caught up with him and wounded him severely.
- 9:42Saul groaned to his armor-bearer,
- 9:45Take your sword and run me through before these pagan Philistines come and humiliate me.
- 9:50But his armor-bearer was afraid and would not do it.
- 9:54So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.
- 9:57When his armor-bearer realized that Saul was dead,
- 10:01he fell on his own sword and died.
- 10:04So Saul and his three sons died there together, bringing his dynasty to an end.
- 10:10When the Israelites in the Jezreel Valley saw that their army had been routed,
- 10:15and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their towns and fled.
- 10:20So the Philistines moved in and occupied their towns.
- 10:23The next day, when the Philistines went out to strip the dead,
- 10:27they found the bodies of Saul and his sons on Mount Gilboa.
- 10:31So they stripped off Saul's armor and cut off his head.
- 10:35Then they proclaimed the news of Saul's death before their idols and to the people throughout the land of Philistia.
- 10:42They placed his armor in the temple of their gods, and they fastened his head to the wall in the temple of Dagon.
- 10:49But when the people of Jabesh-Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,
- 10:54their warriors went out and brought the bodies of Saul and his three sons back to Jabesh.
- 10:59Then they buried their remains beneath the oak tree at Jabesh, and they fasted for seven days.
- 11:06So Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord.
- 11:11He failed to obey the Lord's command, and he even consulted a medium instead of asking the Lord for guidance.
- 11:18So the Lord killed him and turned his kingdom over to David, son of Jesse.
- 11:33No one had eaten for a long time.
- 11:36Finally, Paul called the crew together and said,
- 11:39Men, you should have listened to me in the first place and not left Fairhavens.
- 11:44You would have avoided all this injury and loss.
- 11:47But take courage. None of you will lose your lives, even though the ship will go down.
- 11:52For last night, an angel of God, to whom I belong and whom I serve, stood beside me.
- 11:58And he said, Don't be afraid, Paul, for you will surely stand trial before Caesar.
- 12:03What's more, God in his goodness has granted safety to everyone sailing with you.
- 12:10So take courage, for I believe, God, it will be just as he said.
- 12:14But we will be shipwrecked on an island.
- 12:18About midnight on the fourteenth night of the storm, we were being driven across the sea of Adria.
- 12:25The sailors sensed land was near.
- 12:27They took soundings and found the water was only one hundred and twenty feet deep.
- 12:33A little later, they sounded again and found only thirty feet.
- 12:37At this rate, they were afraid we would soon be driven against the rocks along the shore.
- 12:42So they threw out four anchors from the stern and prayed for daylight.
- 12:47Then the sailors tried to abandon the ship.
- 12:50They lowered the lifeboat as though they were going to put out anchors from the prow.
- 12:56But Paul said to the commanding officer and the soldiers,
- 13:01You will all die unless the sailors stay aboard.
- 13:05So the soldiers cut the ropes and let the boat fall off.
- 13:09As the darkness gave way to the early morning light, Paul begged everyone to eat.
- 13:14You haven't touched food for two weeks, he said.
- 13:17Please eat something now for your own good, for not a hair of your heads will perish.
- 13:22Then he took some bread, gave thanks to God before them all, and broke off a piece and ate it.
- 13:28Then everyone was encouraged, and all two hundred and seventy-six of us began eating.
- 13:33For that is the number we had aboard.
- 13:36After eating, the crew lightened the ship further by throwing the cargo of wheat overboard.
- 13:42When morning dawned, they didn't recognize the coastline, but they saw a bay with a beach
- 13:48and wondered if they could get between the rocks and get the ship safely to shore.
- 13:53So they cut off the anchors and left them in the sea.
- 13:56Then they lowered the rudders, raised the foresail, and headed towards shore.
- 14:01But the ship hit a shoal and ran aground.
- 14:05The bow of the ship stuck fast, while the stern was repeatedly smashed by the force of the waves and began to break apart.
- 14:13The soldiers wanted to kill the prisoners to make sure they didn't swim ashore and escape.
- 14:19But the commanding officer wanted to spare Paul, so he didn't let them carry out their plan.
- 14:26Then he ordered all who could swim to jump overboard first and make for land,
- 14:31and he told the others to try for it on planks and debris from the broken ship.
- 14:36So everyone escaped safely ashore.
- 14:40Psalm 8, 1-9
- 14:46O Lord, our Lord, the majesty of your name fills the earth.
- 14:52Your glory is higher than the heavens.
- 14:56You have taught children and nursing infants to give you praise.
- 15:00They silence your enemies who are seeking revenge.
- 15:04When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers,
- 15:08the moon and the stars you have set in place,
- 15:11what are mortals that you should think of us, mere humans that you should care for us?
- 15:17For you made us only a little lower than God, and you crowned us with glory and honor.
- 15:23You put us in charge of everything you made, giving us authority over all things,
- 15:29the sheep and the cattle and all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea,
- 15:35and everything that swims in the ocean currents.
- 15:38O Lord, our Lord, the majesty of your name fills the earth.
- 15:46Proverbs 18, 23-24
- 15:51The poor plead for mercy, the rich answer with insults.
- 15:56There are friends who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.
- 16:04Yev'rek ha-adonai v'heishm'rek ha-y'ev'adonai
- 16:30P'nav il'ka v'kun'nek ha-y'sa'adonai
- 16:45P'nav il'ka v'kun'nek ha-y'sa'adonai
- 17:06The Aaronic Blessing from Numbers Chapter 6, 24-26
- 17:13Adonai bless you and keep you. Adonai make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you.
