Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The following program is produced by the Tech Talk Radio Network.
- 0:05Speaker 1: And welcome to another episode of tech Talk Radio. I'm
- 0:08Speaker 1: Andy Taylor, I'm Sean de Weird, and we hear the
- 0:11Speaker 1: show that talks about well computers, technology and of course
- 0:15Speaker 1: the Internet and everything encompassing all of that. Just a
- 0:18Speaker 1: couple of guys talking about tech. Hopefully we'll have some
- 0:21Speaker 1: tips for you, stuff we could share. We got listener
- 0:24Speaker 1: questions for today. And yeah, just the two of us say.
- 0:28Speaker 2: If you can get to us today, Oh yeah, maybe
- 0:32Speaker 2: you're having a problem with Amazon.
- 0:35Speaker 1: People are with People are so confused, Sean, with this
- 0:38Speaker 1: past week of course, in case you didn't know, there
- 0:41Speaker 1: was an outage and people were just told it was
- 0:44Speaker 1: AWS and they hear Amazon. They think Amazon is messing
- 0:48Speaker 1: up with their internet. Can you kind of explain a
- 0:51Speaker 1: little about why does Amazon have anything to do with
- 0:56Speaker 1: the services that people use, whether it be coin base
- 1:00Speaker 1: or Snapchat or you know, roadblocks or any of that stuff.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Why that affected so many people this past week when
- 1:08Speaker 1: they had an outage.
- 1:10Speaker 2: So when you connect to a website, you're pointing your
- 1:18Speaker 2: computer at a name, Google, Reddit, Verge, whatever, whatever, whatever, Yeah,
- 1:26Speaker 2: Tech Talk Radio whatever ONBS that you're going to that name.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Your Internet provider points you to what is called a
- 1:35Speaker 2: DNS server Domain Name Registration DNS. That then in terms says,
- 1:41Speaker 2: oh you want Reddit, which is this IP address, and
- 1:45Speaker 2: it provides that for you, and it connects you Amazon.
- 1:48Speaker 2: So those websites host their content in the cloud or
- 1:56Speaker 2: at storage servers on prem solutions, but they use Amazon
- 2:01Speaker 2: for resolving that DNAs information.
- 2:04Speaker 1: That's a huge that's a huge business portion for Amazon,
- 2:07Speaker 1: isn't it.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's billions of dollars a year, like billions, Like
- 2:13Speaker 2: it's ridiculous. And so a Amazon AWS East one, Yeah,
- 2:22Speaker 2: that's had had an outer and that is regionally right.
- 2:28Speaker 2: So but that was a large portion of that DNS piece.
- 2:34Speaker 2: So on October twentieth, twenty twenty five, AWS had a
- 2:37Speaker 2: major outage centered in its US East one region, which
- 2:39Speaker 2: is in northern Virginia. Many services that rely on that
- 2:42Speaker 2: ADBs portion just didn't work, couldn't work anymore. The root
- 2:46Speaker 2: of that problem was a DNS resolution failure. Basically, the
- 2:50Speaker 2: systems knew where their data was stored, just couldn't find
- 2:53Speaker 2: the street address. Basically, think of it like streets and
- 2:57Speaker 2: addresses and stuff. They you just couldn't find it. Yeah,
- 3:02Speaker 2: basically your computer didn't know where to go to find
- 3:05Speaker 2: the information, and until it was resolved, you couldn't get
- 3:08Speaker 2: down the street. I mean, it was a lot of websites,
- 3:13Speaker 2: It was a lot of stuff. It was coinbase, it
- 3:15Speaker 2: was robin Hood, it was banking information in the UK,
- 3:18Speaker 2: it was Reddit was down, Snapchat was down, McDonald's was down. Yeah.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I mean, you're trying to play monopoly and you can't
- 3:27Speaker 2: do not pass go.
- 3:31Speaker 1: And even Amazon was affected by this.
- 3:34Speaker 2: They even Amazon like your ring camera, your Alexa's Like,
- 3:37Speaker 2: I mean, it's crazy how much how decentralized this has become.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Yeah, we tried to ask the Alexa something in the morning,
- 3:50Speaker 1: is that I don't know what to do or you know,
- 3:53Speaker 1: I don't know how to do that. It was, you know,
- 3:56Speaker 1: it was there, but it didn't know how to get
- 3:58Speaker 1: that information because well they were they were affected by
- 4:01Speaker 1: that as well.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Yeah. So, I mean I didn't even really notice anything.
- 4:07Speaker 2: And I got a couple of emails from work saying
- 4:08Speaker 2: some of some of our stuff was down. I figured
- 4:10Speaker 2: it was just like a scheduled outage, but then I
- 4:12Speaker 2: started seeing some more stuff because I wasn't able to
- 4:15Speaker 2: get on Reddit. I just read it's down, big deal.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I don't have any other social media, so I wasn't
- 4:21Speaker 2: getting And then finally somebody mentioned that there was a
- 4:23Speaker 2: huge Amazon outage, and then I started to pick up
- 4:27Speaker 2: on a couple of things and did some some searching
- 4:29Speaker 2: to see what was going on. But yeah, it's it.
- 4:33Speaker 2: It wasn't a global ottage like we had it two
- 4:36Speaker 2: or three years ago regionally, so yeah, yeah, So, I
- 4:40Speaker 2: mean it's a critical infrastructure. Literally everything you do on
- 4:48Speaker 2: a data debate day to day basis in the US,
- 4:51Speaker 2: it's tied to the Internet.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Yeah, hands down. Even I know that Roku was down,
- 4:56Speaker 1: and that's the thing. You know, a lot of people,
- 4:58Speaker 1: at least for some a lot of people rely on
- 5:01Speaker 1: that for their entertainment. And we've talked about this before
- 5:04Speaker 1: about the need to have digital media versus having physical media.
- 5:10Speaker 1: That having the physical media can be in case there
- 5:14Speaker 1: ever is an outage that lasts a long time. The
- 5:17Speaker 1: longest one was that one in twenty twenty one. We
- 5:19Speaker 1: talked about that when it was like three days. Yeah,
- 5:23Speaker 1: and people weren't able to connect to certain things and whatnot,
- 5:26Speaker 1: and that kind of reminds you, like, well, This is
- 5:28Speaker 1: a good reason if you ever had to subsist without
- 5:31Speaker 1: the Internet, but you have your devices, you want to
- 5:34Speaker 1: use them to have that physical media. Yeah, it's it's wild, and.
- 5:44Speaker 2: You know, it's it's weird, it's it's it's hard to
- 5:47Speaker 2: talk about this because it's piracy is not a big
- 5:49Speaker 2: topic to talk about, but it's like it's forcing people
- 5:52Speaker 2: to look at alternative ways to get media.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Yeah, so, well, even with your own media. You know,
- 6:00Speaker 1: in the case of well like services like Plex where
- 6:04Speaker 1: you can easily use programs like the DVD Ethinic's Next Copy,
- 6:09Speaker 1: where you could take your DVD or your Blu Ray
- 6:11Speaker 1: and make a digital copy of it, store it on
- 6:14Speaker 1: a device, connect it to your your router, your computer,
- 6:18Speaker 1: or put it on your computer and then be able
- 6:20Speaker 1: to access it. So you want to watch you want
- 6:23Speaker 1: to watch you know, Lost in America or Into the
- 6:26Speaker 1: Night or I'm talking to some of my favorite movies
- 6:28Speaker 1: here American, Werewolf, London. You can easily do that without
- 6:32Speaker 1: having to go find the CD or DVD and store
- 6:35Speaker 1: it on your device. Just make a backup.
- 6:37Speaker 2: So yep, my whole book. I have a bookshelf just
- 6:40Speaker 2: off off screen here that has my DVDs on it.
- 6:43Speaker 2: I have a physical DVD collection. It's not as big
- 6:45Speaker 2: as it used to because I've gotten rid of some,
- 6:48Speaker 2: but all of them are digitized. I spent most of
- 6:53Speaker 2: COVID really doing just in rip in rep in rip
- 7:00Speaker 2: and if you're interested in preserving your media from physical
- 7:04Speaker 2: to digital, right make mkav will do Blu rays if
- 7:07Speaker 2: you have a Blu ray, burner, Handbrake will do DVDs.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Those are both free programs. They're both open source, so
- 7:15Speaker 2: they're both great.
- 7:16Speaker 1: You give me a little challenging to use, but once
- 7:18Speaker 1: you get it, it's.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Pretty straightforward, and they both have very very well fleshed
- 7:25Speaker 2: out tutorials on how to do these things. The communities
- 7:28Speaker 2: around these projects are very open to answering questions and
- 7:33Speaker 2: there's tons of tutorials on it. It's almost point and
- 7:37Speaker 2: click at this point. You put the disc in, you
- 7:39Speaker 2: click burn, you pick the format you want, the resolution
- 7:42Speaker 2: you want. Do you want it to have all the menus?
- 7:44Speaker 2: Do you want it to have all the special features? Yes? No? Yes, no,
- 7:47Speaker 2: yes no. Burn rep You've got a four and a
- 7:50Speaker 2: half gig file for DVDs, upwards of eighteen to twenty
- 7:53Speaker 2: gigs for a Blu Ray if you multi layer.
- 7:57Speaker 1: So, I mean some people like to get the menu
- 8:01Speaker 1: systems on DVDs, Like if they're going to make a
- 8:04Speaker 1: digital copy, can they do that so it's not just
- 8:07Speaker 1: the movie. They can have the interface so they could
- 8:10Speaker 1: go to the menu system and say, I want to
- 8:13Speaker 1: see behind the scenes, I want to see this. Is
- 8:15Speaker 1: that possible for people to do?
- 8:17Speaker 2: No, I've never tried it that way. I've never tried
- 8:19Speaker 2: to do to burn a DVD to emulate it as
- 8:22Speaker 2: a DVD in a player. I've just always ripped the
- 8:25Speaker 2: VOB files for DVDs and then compress them into an
- 8:30Speaker 2: MP four. So I don't know. I know that you
- 8:34Speaker 2: can still just put a DVD into your computer and
- 8:37Speaker 2: play it that way too, So if you're looking for
- 8:40Speaker 2: that emulation, it's it's very easy to do. Maybe not now,
- 8:44Speaker 2: Maybe not now, because hardly hardly any computer you buy
- 8:47Speaker 2: now comes with a comes with a CD, any Blu
- 8:51Speaker 2: Ray CD anything. I mean, you're hard pressed to get one,
- 8:55Speaker 2: let alone. They make USB ones now and things that,
- 9:00Speaker 2: so it's relatively easy to get them, but they're not
- 9:03Speaker 2: a common thing in PC builds anymore.
- 9:06Speaker 1: LG makes makes one. I know I've got a couple
- 9:08Speaker 1: of them that I use and it saved my butt recently,
- 9:12Speaker 1: which I'll tell you about coming up. But it's really interesting.
- 9:15Speaker 1: There's a story that I read on one of the
- 9:18Speaker 1: one of the tech blogs that optical drive demand has
- 9:22Speaker 1: gone up with Windows ten. Retirement Japan was one of those.
- 9:28Speaker 1: They found users switching to Windows eleven. We're buying up
- 9:30Speaker 1: Blu ray drives to have inside the machines. So they
- 9:35Speaker 1: go ahead and they whether either putting them in their
- 9:37Speaker 1: machines or they're doing the externals. They wanted to have
- 9:41Speaker 1: that capability to be able to watch their content on
- 9:44Speaker 1: those devices, and they found that the sales went up.
- 9:49Speaker 2: I think we need to go back since I started
- 9:52Speaker 2: on the show and count the number of times that
- 9:56Speaker 2: I've said there is going to be a analog revolution,
- 10:02Speaker 2: not necessarily an analog revolution, but a a physical media revolution.
- 10:08Speaker 2: People are going to there is going to be a
- 10:09Speaker 2: demand back for physical media. And I think with the
- 10:13Speaker 2: chaos of all the streaming platforms and you know, having
- 10:17Speaker 2: to have ten subscriptions to get the content you want,
- 10:20Speaker 2: and you know, the raising of the prices the game
- 10:23Speaker 2: passed this stuff like that, it's like I just want
- 10:26Speaker 2: to play my games. I just want to watch my movies.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Like I can play all my stuff. I have the
- 10:32Speaker 2: capability because I've I'm a little bit of a tech order, right.
- 10:35Speaker 2: I can play Blu rays, I can play DVDs, I
- 10:37Speaker 2: can play VHS tapes like, I can play all that.
- 10:39Speaker 2: But a lot of people what the way of the
- 10:42Speaker 2: DODO wants to have that stuff? Right? It's like they
- 10:45Speaker 2: they said, a streaming is the next it's the best thing.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Here's all my DVDs at a yard sale for fifty
- 10:51Speaker 2: cents apiece and somebody came and bought them all up. Well,
- 10:57Speaker 2: with this outage, you may have not been able to
- 10:59Speaker 2: get to Netflix, HBO Max was down, so you couldn't
- 11:03Speaker 2: you couldn't watch your content there. Again, with the way
- 11:07Speaker 2: the licensing stuff works, it's like even when you're paying
- 11:11Speaker 2: for Prime or Disney Plus, they bump you up into
- 11:15Speaker 2: the next, the next tier, they raise your price. All
- 11:18Speaker 2: of a sudden, you log in and you start streaming
- 11:20Speaker 2: Malana for your your three year old, and you get
- 11:23Speaker 2: served two and a half minutes of ads. It's like,
- 11:26Speaker 2: whoa wait, I didn't think I was paid for Like,
- 11:28Speaker 2: I didn't think my plan included ads on Disney Plus.
- 11:31Speaker 2: And then you look and they say, oh, by the way,
- 11:33Speaker 2: the price went up, you're not paying for that price,
- 11:36Speaker 2: so you got shifted into an ad plan.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Yeah, well, what the heck. It's like, if two minutes
- 11:41Speaker 1: of ads for a four year old, we'll just lose
- 11:43Speaker 1: their interest compleatly.
- 11:45Speaker 2: That's that's why we pay for YouTube Premium. Our boys
- 11:50Speaker 2: like to watch YouTube. There. You know, there's a handful
- 11:52Speaker 2: of shows. Nickelodeon has a couple of things on YouTube, Blippy,
- 11:55Speaker 2: a handful of those shows that are on YouTube. Trying
- 11:59Speaker 2: to watch any of that content on YouTube without YouTube Premium,
- 12:03Speaker 2: without the ads, with the ads was a literally a
- 12:06Speaker 2: miserable experience. And getting ads, it's just it's it's a
- 12:12Speaker 2: it's a nightmare, and I get it. People don't have it.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Not it's I feel very privileged to be able to
- 12:19Speaker 2: pay for a handful of subscriptions to not have ads,
- 12:22Speaker 2: and it's it's it's a you know, I understand that,
- 12:26Speaker 2: but it's a miserable experience.
- 12:28Speaker 1: And there was there was just a price increase too
- 12:31Speaker 1: this week in case you didn't know. And it's weird
- 12:34Speaker 1: they didn't really talk about it. I don't think they
- 12:36Speaker 1: talked about it before they made the announcement, but Warner
- 12:41Speaker 1: Brothers Discovery and now you know, there's big talk now
- 12:43Speaker 1: about there's gonna be a sell or a purchase outright.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Comcast is one of those that could possibly be interested
- 12:50Speaker 1: in buying, but Warner Brother's Discovery. As of this past Tuesday.
- 12:55Speaker 1: So the cost of your HBO Max plans gonna increase again,
- 12:59Speaker 1: another increase if you get HBO Max Basic with ADS,
- 13:04Speaker 1: which will allow you to stream on two devices simultaneously.
- 13:07Speaker 1: So if you've got a household and your kids are
- 13:09Speaker 1: watching in one or maybe you like a show and
- 13:12Speaker 1: you know your your other half goes and wants to
- 13:14Speaker 1: watch something else on that services monthly, it goes up
- 13:18Speaker 1: a buck. Now we might not think not a dollar,
- 13:21Speaker 1: but when you add paramount plus, when you add Discovery,
- 13:25Speaker 1: if you're paying for that, when you add you know, Netflix,
- 13:29Speaker 1: the Netflix, it's obscene. It gets crazy, it's obscene, and
- 13:35Speaker 1: you don't you.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Just don't realize it, and it's all just gross marketing,
- 13:42Speaker 2: hostile marketing, and it's I wish sometimes we had digital
- 13:49Speaker 2: digital rights like the UK does in some some instances,
- 13:53Speaker 2: because that would shore up a lot of this stuff
- 13:57Speaker 2: and get us on track to actual having actually having
- 14:00Speaker 2: user rights to some of this stuff.
- 14:02Speaker 1: And a lot of people that would tell me, you know,
- 14:04Speaker 1: they're getting rid of their DVDs, and they would say,
- 14:06Speaker 1: it's okay, because that's streaming. I can find it anywhere,
- 14:09Speaker 1: you know. I there's a website I love to go to,
- 14:12Speaker 1: and you can check this one out too. It's called
- 14:14Speaker 1: real Good uh, and it is a site you can
- 14:18Speaker 1: go to and you can type in a movie real
- 14:20Speaker 1: Good dot com and say you want to see this movie.
- 14:25Speaker 1: When uh, the missus Bucket from Keeping Up Appearances died recently,
- 14:31Speaker 1: I thought, oh, I want to watch some of those episodes. Uh,
- 14:33Speaker 1: And I don't have the DVD box set of Keeping
- 14:36Speaker 1: Up Appearances. It's good British comedy and you go there
- 14:40Speaker 1: and you find, okay, where can I watch it? It's
- 14:42Speaker 1: only available on brit Box, but it's also available on
- 14:46Speaker 1: the Roku channel, which anybody you don't have to have
- 14:49Speaker 1: a Roku device to be able to watch a Roku channel.
- 14:53Speaker 1: You could go ahead and just watch it there and
- 14:55Speaker 1: you go They've got a guide you can go through
- 14:58Speaker 1: and you could find it there on that that's so
- 15:00Speaker 1: it's a great way to find out where a movie
- 15:02Speaker 1: that maybe you liked or a TV show you like
- 15:04Speaker 1: is available to stream, and it might be on Netflix,
- 15:07Speaker 1: or it might be on HBO Max. But with the
- 15:10Speaker 1: price going up, a lot of people are just saying
- 15:12Speaker 1: this is ridiculous because they cut the cord and then
- 15:16Speaker 1: they went Internet only, and they said, Okay, we'll get HBO,
- 15:19Speaker 1: we'll get hu Hulu, we'll get Peacock, we'll get Paramount Plus.
- 15:23Speaker 1: That covers pretty much everything. Right then they found out no,
- 15:26Speaker 1: it doesn't, so they oh, let's add Pluto TV. Pluto
- 15:30Speaker 1: TV it's free, or some of the other free services.
- 15:34Speaker 1: But then with the added cost of all the subscription services,
- 15:37Speaker 1: people are saying this is outrageous. Like if you do
- 15:40Speaker 1: an HBO Max standard no ADS streaming on two devices
- 15:44Speaker 1: the same time, it's one hundred and eighty four dollars
- 15:47Speaker 1: a year, that's a lot of money for a lot
- 15:50Speaker 1: of people. So you know, it just it all adds up.
- 15:56Speaker 2: It does, and it's we'll never go back to the
- 16:00Speaker 2: way it was with over the AIRTV because it doesn't
- 16:05Speaker 2: reach anybody anymore, and that nobody sits at home, nobody's
- 16:12Speaker 2: going home at four o'clock to watch Star Trek Voyager
- 16:15Speaker 2: after they get off the school bus like I did
- 16:17Speaker 2: growing up because I knew it was on at four o'clock.
- 16:21Speaker 2: But that structure doesn't work for the majority of society.
- 16:26Speaker 2: These days, there were always good, just really good shows
- 16:31Speaker 2: re reairing at between three to five up until primetime,
- 16:36Speaker 2: and then you hit your primetime stuff and then on
- 16:38Speaker 2: Friday nights it was you know, Naked Night. On Friday
- 16:41Speaker 2: nights it was Saturday Morning cartoons. Like there was set
- 16:45Speaker 2: times that the world knew you were watching TV and
- 16:50Speaker 2: they could cater. It's all about ads. It's all about money, right,
- 16:53Speaker 2: It's all about ads. This is the entirety of this conversation.
- 16:57Speaker 2: It's focused around how do we get eyeballs on money
- 16:59Speaker 2: and and when you have content that is available twenty
- 17:05Speaker 2: four to seven, three sixty five streaming anywhere in the world,
- 17:11Speaker 2: it's it's just free money and an ad free service
- 17:17Speaker 2: was so unrealistic and based on the amount of content
- 17:21Speaker 2: these places are pumping out. You're paying big, big bucks
- 17:25Speaker 2: for studio content, not network content. Not already invested money
- 17:31Speaker 2: into an affiliate NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, whatever. This is
- 17:36Speaker 2: a brand new production facility that's got to do these
- 17:40Speaker 2: very very high level productions. And there's the expectation just
- 17:43Speaker 2: kept getting high and higher. Right. You had these shows
- 17:46Speaker 2: that when Netflix first came out, you had Stranger Things,
- 17:49Speaker 2: you had Drive to Survive, You had all these other
- 17:52Speaker 2: series that just lived on Netflix that you wanted to watch,
- 17:57Speaker 2: and the expectation was it got better every time, and
- 18:00Speaker 2: the expectation was, I'm going to pay the same but
- 18:02Speaker 2: I wanted to get better. You can't expect it to
- 18:06Speaker 2: get better every time and have it available to you
- 18:09Speaker 2: all the time without it costing more money.
- 18:12Speaker 1: I would rather, I don't know about you, but I
- 18:14Speaker 1: would rather pay a decent price and have Netflix with programming.
- 18:21Speaker 1: But now, like if you get on the Netflix, you
- 18:24Speaker 1: get lost in the guide itself. It's like, gosh, what
- 18:27Speaker 1: do I want to want to watch? There's so many
- 18:29Speaker 1: options because they're paying for that programming.
- 18:34Speaker 2: This is this is my opinion on how the Internet
- 18:36Speaker 2: is right now. Everybody, every company that's on the Internet
- 18:39Speaker 2: neet wants to be the center of the Internet. They
- 18:42Speaker 2: want it to be. You come here to do everything.
- 18:44Speaker 2: You come here to stream, you come here to play games,
- 18:47Speaker 2: you come here to do social media. That's what that's
- 18:49Speaker 2: what everybody wants. That's the focus of everybody's your eyeballs.
- 18:54Speaker 2: And that's not how it was. That's and it's when
- 18:59Speaker 2: you have that much marketing going into trying to keep
- 19:02Speaker 2: everybody's attention on everything, and you have all these deals
- 19:06Speaker 2: and it's so confusing for a consumer to find anything.
- 19:12Speaker 2: I mean, this real good website is great. I just
- 19:14Speaker 2: looked it up. This looks fantastic. But it's frustrating because
- 19:19Speaker 2: a lot of the apps will reach out and look
- 19:22Speaker 2: at these other apps and CEO, it's streaming here. It's
- 19:24Speaker 2: not on here, but you can watch it on Amazon,
- 19:26Speaker 2: and then you're like, great, I can watch it on Amazon,
- 19:29Speaker 2: and then you click on the link rent or buy
- 19:32Speaker 2: for two ninety nine or four. Well, now I'm frustrated,
- 19:37Speaker 2: so let me go find it somewhere else where it is, Well,
- 19:39Speaker 2: it's only available here. Well if I rent it now
- 19:42Speaker 2: I don't own it. But if I buy it in
- 19:45Speaker 2: six months, what if they re what if they pull
- 19:48Speaker 2: the license and now I don't own it anymore.
- 19:51Speaker 1: There was a real good documentary about Gordon Lightfoot that
- 19:56Speaker 1: was done some years ago, and I wanted to watch
- 20:00Speaker 1: it wasn't available anywhere except in Canada, and it was
- 20:05Speaker 1: available in Canada for you to watch on the I
- 20:08Speaker 1: guess it's CBC or one of those, so wouldn't let
- 20:13Speaker 1: me watch it? Just turned on the VPN. Turn on
- 20:18Speaker 1: the VPN pointed it, saying that it was a Canadian connection.
- 20:21Speaker 1: You're not doing anything illegal. And I was able to
- 20:24Speaker 1: watch it. And some people are finding out there's a website.
- 20:28Speaker 1: There's another here. We're giving you some good websites today,
- 20:31Speaker 1: and I don't know if you've heard about this one
- 20:33Speaker 1: Sean called TV dot Garden. If you go to TV
- 20:37Speaker 1: dot Garden, it's pretty amazing because you can actually watch
- 20:42Speaker 1: TV from around the world and it's free, so you
- 20:46Speaker 1: can watch their broadcast channels, whether you want to watch
- 20:50Speaker 1: something out of Britain, Italy, Spain, Greece.
- 20:55Speaker 2: It's awesome.
- 20:56Speaker 1: It has a globe and then it has you know,
- 20:59Speaker 1: where where do you want to watch? And like I
- 21:02Speaker 1: had to look, you know, because my family is got
- 21:05Speaker 1: a background from Mignon mar Burma and I thought, what
- 21:08Speaker 1: do they watch it over there? I wanted to take
- 21:09Speaker 1: a look and I clicked out it and I'm like, whoa,
- 21:11Speaker 1: look at this. This is a trip. This is what
- 21:13Speaker 1: they're watching over there, like a news program. Out of there.
- 21:16Speaker 1: You could see him from all the different countries streams again,
- 21:20Speaker 1: TV dot Garden.
- 21:22Speaker 2: This is insane. There's you can just I'm I was
- 21:24Speaker 2: listening to you talk for a second, but I'm scrolling
- 21:26Speaker 2: through just you can literally find anything on here.
- 21:32Speaker 1: You know one of those stories I heard, do you
- 21:33Speaker 1: remember Herve Villachet. I don't know if you know that name.
- 21:37Speaker 1: There's a movie called My Dinner with Hervey that is
- 21:40Speaker 1: really great, and if you ever get a chance to
- 21:43Speaker 1: watch that, I'd say take a look at that. Hervey
- 21:45Speaker 1: was a tattoo on the show Fantasy Island. And I
- 21:50Speaker 1: read a story once about Herve and how he learned
- 21:52Speaker 1: to speak English. He was from France. He actually learned
- 21:57Speaker 1: by watching television, watching American television. Now, back in the seventies,
- 22:03Speaker 1: you know, growing up, there was a lot of choices.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Sesame Street you can you can still watch Sesame Street.
- 22:08Speaker 1: You can watch Sesame Street, I Love Lucy. You could
- 22:10Speaker 1: watch shows and reruns. You could watch shows like Emergency,
- 22:13Speaker 1: Adam twelve, the whole bit, and you could pick that up. Now,
- 22:16Speaker 1: I wonder if the same thing could be applied to
- 22:18Speaker 1: TV dot Garden where I want to learn to speak Spanish.
- 22:22Speaker 1: So you go to Spain or you go to Mexico
- 22:25Speaker 1: and you watch what is streaming out of there and
- 22:28Speaker 1: maybe help you understand the language a little better. It
- 22:31Speaker 1: could be could actually be good and educational source.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Sure. Yeah, you immerse yourself into that, that language and
- 22:38Speaker 2: the help doc. I'm just blown away at this one's
- 22:40Speaker 2: TV dot Garden. It's I mean, it's incredible which.
- 22:46Speaker 1: You can find. There's a lot of good stuff on there.
- 22:49Speaker 1: There's more stuff to talk about. I wanted to. I
- 22:51Speaker 1: want to go over this one really quickly, though. Do
- 22:53Speaker 1: you remember we were talking about driver Easy. I went
- 22:57Speaker 1: ahead and bought it and I been able to put
- 23:00Speaker 1: it on a system at work that was given us
- 23:02Speaker 1: some troubles. I put it on my main system here
- 23:05Speaker 1: at home. I've got one license still to use and
- 23:08Speaker 1: it helps you find the drivers for your system that
- 23:11Speaker 1: all at one time. But there's another one, and it's
- 23:15Speaker 1: been around a while. It's been around a long time
- 23:17Speaker 1: called win get. Have you ever used wing get wind? No,
- 23:21Speaker 1: wing Get is a command line program. It's a wind
- 23:25Speaker 1: It's called Windows Package Manager is what it is. It's
- 23:28Speaker 1: safe to use, generally saying it's an official Microsoft tool.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Not to get to it, what you'd have to do
- 23:35Speaker 1: is use your command key, So down on your bottom
- 23:38Speaker 1: search bar, you could type cmd. That's one way to
- 23:41Speaker 1: get to your command button. There's other ways, and then
- 23:44Speaker 1: you'll see a pop up and one of those options
- 23:46Speaker 1: is select run as an administrator and then you type
- 23:51Speaker 1: in wind get update and it will show you a
- 23:54Speaker 1: list of programs that can be updated that you may
- 23:57Speaker 1: have in your computer, like Adobe Acrobat, drop downloads that
- 24:01Speaker 1: you may have had you not updated yet. Wind get
- 24:04Speaker 1: will actually do those updates for you. So like Driver easy,
- 24:09Speaker 1: this actually focuses on the programs that are a part
- 24:13Speaker 1: of your computer. And I mean it's you can't go
- 24:16Speaker 1: wrong with that. Again, it's wind get, so you use
- 24:19Speaker 1: the command key to get to it, and again is
- 24:21Speaker 1: part of part of your Windows operating system.
- 24:24Speaker 2: That's I didn't know about that. Yep, that's something, but
- 24:27Speaker 2: it's clever and I have a bunch.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Yeah, you can actually do when when GETU I just
- 24:35Speaker 1: just did.
- 24:36Speaker 2: I just did. It's audacities out of date. Driver EASi
- 24:39Speaker 2: is out of date. Wow, my Steel series stuff's out
- 24:43Speaker 2: of date. My stream decks out of date, obs studios,
- 24:46Speaker 2: out of date, Boy discards out of date.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Don't do it while we're doing the show, please.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Because it'll do a Windows probably. It's cool. So it's
- 24:55Speaker 2: like just for those like who are interested in Linux,
- 24:58Speaker 2: like this is pseudo app get we'll get you this
- 25:01Speaker 2: or should we have to update, we'll get you the
- 25:03Speaker 2: same thing and update libraries based on that's a similar concept,
- 25:07Speaker 2: which is pretty.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Cool, making it making it easier for you. Or we
- 25:10Speaker 1: can take a quick break. We come back. A couple
- 25:11Speaker 1: of listener questions we will share with you. Maybe it's
- 25:14Speaker 1: yours that's standing by. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm sewan to
- 25:17Speaker 1: wear it.
- 25:17Speaker 2: Find us on the web at tech talk radio dot
- 25:19Speaker 2: com if you can get there.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Good luck. Now back to tech talk Radio. This is
- 25:24Speaker 1: Alice Cooper, the original Technoe Todd and you're listening to
- 25:28Speaker 1: tech talk Radio.
- 25:32Speaker 2: So imagine it's three am, all right, and you're sleeping
- 25:36Speaker 2: and you have to get up and use the bathroom. Right,
- 25:38Speaker 2: so you use an eight sleep product, which is a
- 25:43Speaker 2: bed that has can move, can shift, can you raise?
- 25:47Speaker 2: You have it down?
- 25:48Speaker 1: Oh yeah, those are kind of cool, but they.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Don't have an offline mode. And it always has to
- 25:53Speaker 2: be connected to the cloud. Wait really, and so at
- 25:57Speaker 2: three am when Amazon Web Services has an outage, your
- 26:01Speaker 2: bed is now stuck.
- 26:02Speaker 1: You're kidding me.
- 26:03Speaker 2: I had no idea The AWS outage impacted some of
- 26:07Speaker 2: the users. There are eight sleeps two thousand dollars. Pod
- 26:12Speaker 2: mattress covers found their smartbeds had no offline mode and
- 26:16Speaker 2: we're stuck at high temperatures or odd positions during the night.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Oh that's not good.
- 26:22Speaker 2: So you can only imagine like, oh, I'm uncomfortable. Let
- 26:25Speaker 2: me raise up my bed and it's stuck. It's really hot,
- 26:27Speaker 2: let me turn it down and stuck because it doesn't
- 26:29Speaker 2: have an offline mode, meaning it's always calling to the
- 26:33Speaker 2: cloud for information.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Wow, So so is it okay? I know this sounds
- 26:40Speaker 1: very you know, people will say, oh, you're just going
- 26:43Speaker 1: down a different path there, But isn't that giving up
- 26:46Speaker 1: a lot of your info how you sleep when you
- 26:48Speaker 1: get out?
- 26:49Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 26:51Speaker 1: Do we? I mean, I know, our TVs relay a
- 26:53Speaker 1: lot of information, like what you're watching at night, what
- 26:56Speaker 1: your what commercials? You skip over the whole bit.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Uh.
- 27:00Speaker 2: There was a tech a tech enthusiast that posted that
- 27:03Speaker 2: said his pod locked itself nine degrees higher than room temperature.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Back end doubters means I'm sleeping in a sauna.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Oh eight sleep.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Confirmed there was no offline mode, but they were rolling
- 27:13Speaker 2: out a fix.
- 27:15Speaker 1: So yeah, and that's the thing. We constantly are looking
- 27:18Speaker 1: at ways to connect, even our vehicles. You wonder, though,
- 27:21Speaker 1: what path are we going down?
- 27:23Speaker 2: Yeah? I don't know, man, it's a had. I talked
- 27:27Speaker 2: a little bit about this at work with a coworker
- 27:29Speaker 2: about how do I explain the Internet to my children? Okay,
- 27:36Speaker 2: because I've and you've experienced this too, I experienced it
- 27:40Speaker 2: a little bit differently than even you did, right, because
- 27:44Speaker 2: growing up the internet in my young room, you know,
- 27:48Speaker 2: my preteens, the internet was very much non a thing.
- 27:53Speaker 2: It was very hard to come by. It was only
- 27:56Speaker 2: dial up, it was only it was expensive, and so
- 28:01Speaker 2: we just didn't have it. And then getting into grade school,
- 28:06Speaker 2: I you know, we had basic internet connectivity, got introduced
- 28:10Speaker 2: to you know, number mounchers on the Max and you
- 28:13Speaker 2: know games on you know the five, you know the
- 28:15Speaker 2: five at a Quarridge floppies and stuff like that. But
- 28:19Speaker 2: then into junior, junior, and senior high school, slowly got
- 28:24Speaker 2: into the Internet, learning what search engines were, and learning
- 28:29Speaker 2: what chat rooms were, and learning what you know, the
- 28:33Speaker 2: shadier sides of the Internet were as a teenager and
- 28:37Speaker 2: having to go to the library to get connected because
- 28:39Speaker 2: the Internet at home was not good enough, and spending
- 28:45Speaker 2: that time figuring out what the Internet was. Now, how
- 28:48Speaker 2: do I explain that to Max when he can just
- 28:54Speaker 2: sit at the computer and have everything availed to him.
- 28:58Speaker 2: You're right, right If I if I gathered up a
- 29:02Speaker 2: dozen of my friends from high school and said, ha,
- 29:05Speaker 2: do you remember that strong bad video from Homestar Runner,
- 29:09Speaker 2: Everybody's gonna know what that is. Do you remember playing
- 29:12Speaker 2: flash games? I know by No Black Sheep or Ebom's
- 29:14Speaker 2: World Flash Games right, or you know playing Uker on
- 29:18Speaker 2: Yahoo Games or chatting on al and Semessenger. It was
- 29:21Speaker 2: a shared Internet experience. Nobody has that now because it's
- 29:25Speaker 2: it's so user customers customizable that it's it's become its
- 29:31Speaker 2: own world. Everybody has a unique experience now. And I
- 29:36Speaker 2: just feel like, to me, that's the nostalgia of the Internet.
- 29:40Speaker 2: It's for me is I knew what my friends were
- 29:44Speaker 2: doing on the Internet all the time. I knew that
- 29:46Speaker 2: I could go into AOL messenger and talk to my friends.
- 29:51Speaker 2: There's a little bit of community building there. Now, communities
- 29:53Speaker 2: are much larger now and they're worldwide now, so it's like,
- 29:58Speaker 2: it's just weird to see that transition. But how do
- 30:01Speaker 2: I explain that to Max? How do I get him
- 30:03Speaker 2: into the Internet safely and curiously but safely?
- 30:09Speaker 1: You know, I was just thinking about your talking about this, Sean,
- 30:12Speaker 1: And I remember, you know, when I learned to drive,
- 30:15Speaker 1: the warning came out from my parents, never pick up hitchhikers.
- 30:19Speaker 1: I remember in the late sixties going to San Francisco
- 30:23Speaker 1: with my parents in our station wagon, driving back, my
- 30:27Speaker 1: dad pulling over to pick up a couple of hitchhikers
- 30:30Speaker 1: that were in military uniforms. You would never ever think
- 30:34Speaker 1: about doing that today. Turned out they had just gotten
- 30:36Speaker 1: back from Vietnam and they were, you know, they were
- 30:41Speaker 1: working their way to get back to Los Angeles. Luckily
- 30:43Speaker 1: we were going that way and learned some things. I
- 30:47Speaker 1: don't remember. I was too young, but you wouldn't do
- 30:49Speaker 1: that these days. And now that's become the Internet danger
- 30:54Speaker 1: where you don't pick up, you know, strangers on the road.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Now you don't communicate with strangers on the Internet. That's
- 31:01Speaker 1: the new danger zone. Sean to talk to the kids
- 31:03Speaker 1: about don't do this, don't do that, and that's gonna
- 31:06Speaker 1: I think it's gonna get even stronger now they're worried
- 31:08Speaker 1: about telling the kids about AI and how to use
- 31:11Speaker 1: AI and not to get in trouble in school and
- 31:13Speaker 1: how to learn.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's it's weird to think that in twenty
- 31:21Speaker 2: years the Internet has changed that much, twenty five years
- 31:26Speaker 2: since I've really been a user of the Internet, and
- 31:31Speaker 2: how much it's changed for my generation and then Max's generation.
- 31:39Speaker 2: It's just it's wild. And even even through major world
- 31:44Speaker 2: events like COVID that changed how a lot of people
- 31:47Speaker 2: viewed the Internet. So you have kids that are graduating
- 31:50Speaker 2: from high school for college that lived through COVID, and
- 31:54Speaker 2: even their experience is different, and how they see the
- 31:56Speaker 2: Internet and how they approach it and how they approach
- 31:59Speaker 2: classroom learning. And so it's so weird how mentally challenging
- 32:05Speaker 2: the Internet can be, and how from a society perspective,
- 32:11Speaker 2: how a important it is because it's literally the connectivity
- 32:15Speaker 2: of the world right now, and to how dangerous that is.
- 32:20Speaker 1: I wanted to get my grandson. I've heard a story
- 32:25Speaker 1: of study the other day about the Internet and how
- 32:28Speaker 1: numbers are coming down when it comes to mathematics, when
- 32:32Speaker 1: it comes to writing, when it comes to reading, and
- 32:34Speaker 1: I wanted to get him into reading because that was
- 32:37Speaker 1: what pulled me, you know, as a I love reading.
- 32:40Speaker 1: I love always loved reading. So I wanted to find
- 32:42Speaker 1: like And the thing is, you can't just give them
- 32:45Speaker 1: a book and say here, read.
- 32:48Speaker 2: Now.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Many parents out there might be going, yeah, you can.
- 32:51Speaker 1: You can't because they're so distracted by technology that I
- 32:54Speaker 1: want to find a way for technology to help with
- 32:58Speaker 1: the reading. I don't don't know if that's possible.
- 33:01Speaker 2: I believe you've hooked on phonics. Like, that's technology, right,
- 33:06Speaker 2: It's the it's the CDs or the tapes that played
- 33:09Speaker 2: and you read along with the books. That's technology. Right.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Everybody thinks that technology has to be a computer. It
- 33:15Speaker 2: has to be has to be the Internet. Technology is
- 33:19Speaker 2: the advancement of the human Technology not just Internet and
- 33:25Speaker 2: in electronics. Technology can be many forms. So it's like
- 33:30Speaker 2: going back and using technology that isn't meet like computer
- 33:35Speaker 2: related can be a huge part of that.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Wow, all right, we got a listener comment. I definitely
- 33:41Speaker 1: want to answer this from an This was on our
- 33:43Speaker 1: Facebook page and it said, Hey, Andy, I want to
- 33:46Speaker 1: search the questions and discussions on the tech talk radio
- 33:49Speaker 1: site for advice about Windows eleven S mode, but I
- 33:53Speaker 1: didn't see any way to search, and maybe that's something
- 33:56Speaker 1: I need to start adding to the website. We're still
- 33:58Speaker 1: working on changing our websit over to maybe a little
- 34:01Speaker 1: more featured website, so hopefully that'll be coming soon, and
- 34:05Speaker 1: says what am I missing? And then she added to
- 34:08Speaker 1: that because I responded about what Windows was all about.
- 34:12Speaker 1: She said, I recently purchased a new laptop with Windows eleven,
- 34:15Speaker 1: and I'm not thrilled about Microsoft basically forcing us to
- 34:18Speaker 1: stay in S mode where only Microsoft products can be installed.
- 34:22Speaker 1: As you said, you can get out of S mode,
- 34:25Speaker 1: but when then you can't get back in, which gives
- 34:28Speaker 1: a person pause. I have malware bites virus software, which
- 34:32Speaker 1: I like very much, but I can't install it without
- 34:35Speaker 1: getting out of S mode, and the fact that I
- 34:37Speaker 1: can't get back in again is intimidating.
- 34:39Speaker 2: It.
- 34:40Speaker 1: It scares a lot of people, says I like to
- 34:42Speaker 1: use a Chrome browser sometimes, which you can't do in
- 34:45Speaker 1: S mode. You have to use the Edge browser. So
- 34:48Speaker 1: if I understand what you said, though, being out of
- 34:50Speaker 1: it is not that big a deal. It seems to
- 34:52Speaker 1: me as if it's just a way for Microsoft to
- 34:54Speaker 1: force people to use their products. Some people would benefit
- 34:58Speaker 1: from S mode. That would be people who are afraid
- 35:04Speaker 1: of installing the wrong thing.
- 35:07Speaker 2: And these are the people that bought the Windows XP
- 35:09Speaker 2: for Dubby's books.
- 35:11Speaker 1: Yeah, pretty much.
- 35:13Speaker 2: I mean it's Windows es MO. So for those of
- 35:15Speaker 2: you who are listening that don't know what Windows S
- 35:17Speaker 2: Mode is, Windows s Mode is basically a stripped down
- 35:21Speaker 2: version of Windows that only lets you run Microsoft products.
- 35:24Speaker 1: That's it. You going down upon the Microsoft Store.
- 35:26Speaker 2: And you get Edge, that's it. So it just it's
- 35:31Speaker 2: sandboxed you a little bit. You can still get out
- 35:33Speaker 2: to the internet, but it's not gonna let you install files.
- 35:38Speaker 2: It's maybe it's gonna be good for a kid, but
- 35:41Speaker 2: any any kid that has any sort of technological curiosity
- 35:45Speaker 2: is gonna work around that in a heartbeat. Yeah the
- 35:48Speaker 2: five I just googled it, Okay, can't do that in
- 35:52Speaker 2: S mode. Stronger security, faster performance, longer battery life, simpler management,
- 35:58Speaker 2: those are the things. But again, if you want to
- 36:00Speaker 2: use Chrome, or if you want to get customizable, you
- 36:03Speaker 2: gotta get on a mode.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Third party programs you may not be able to run
- 36:07Speaker 1: if they're not in the Microsoft Store.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Yeah, why might you not want S mode? Right? You
- 36:12Speaker 2: can't install apps outside of the Microsoft Store, No Chrome, Steam, Discord, Photoshop, anything.
- 36:19Speaker 2: And it says once you get out of a S mode,
- 36:21Speaker 2: there's no way back. That is kind of scary, right
- 36:25Speaker 2: I had.
- 36:25Speaker 1: I had bought a laptop for my daughter, and you'll
- 36:28Speaker 1: find these general You'll find S mode generally on some
- 36:30Speaker 1: of the lower priced, basic, you know, entry level laptops.
- 36:36Speaker 1: And I had bought one for my daughter who's going
- 36:39Speaker 1: to school in Phoenix, and it was grown up, but
- 36:43Speaker 1: it had S mode on it. So when I reached
- 36:45Speaker 1: out there, I said, listen, I'm going to remove S
- 36:48Speaker 1: mode on this because you don't need it. You know,
- 36:51Speaker 1: you know the basics, you know this, I can do this.
- 36:54Speaker 1: When I told her you couldn't run Google on it,
- 36:56Speaker 1: you know, she was like, wait a minute, forget it,
- 36:59Speaker 1: you know, because that's what she had been used to.
- 37:01Speaker 1: So again, S mode can be confusing and scary, but
- 37:05Speaker 1: I don't there may be a certain amount of you
- 37:08Speaker 1: that may benefit from using S mode. But generally I don't.
- 37:12Speaker 2: I mean, maybe if you have elderly parents that just
- 37:15Speaker 2: need to use the internet for their email and to
- 37:18Speaker 2: watch Netflix or some streaming apps, great, no problem. It's
- 37:24Speaker 2: going to stop it from download and road programs.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I missed the calls from my mom. My mom's
- 37:29Speaker 1: no longer with us, but I miss those calls. What
- 37:32Speaker 1: does this pop up? Andrew? Do I need this program? Andrew?
- 37:38Speaker 1: I just want to play my solitaire Andrew. So Yeah.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Having a mom who was a little bit more technical savvy, yeah,
- 37:47Speaker 2: she solved a lot of her own problems, which is great.
- 37:50Speaker 2: My dad, on the other hand, not so much. My
- 37:54Speaker 2: in laws are a little technical inapt, but it's great
- 37:57Speaker 2: I get to help them. I help them get a laptop.
- 38:00Speaker 2: You know, I went through all the one drive stuff
- 38:03Speaker 2: where it forced you into logging in, and it just
- 38:08Speaker 2: Windows is in a weird state. And it's again full
- 38:12Speaker 2: circle with the ads stuff we were talking about earlier,
- 38:14Speaker 2: with the web streaming, with the video streaming, it's like
- 38:17Speaker 2: that's they just want your eyeballs, right, they want to
- 38:19Speaker 2: put ads in these places. In my inexperience with experience
- 38:25Speaker 2: with computers and stuff, it's like going back to you know,
- 38:30Speaker 2: started on Windows, you know, Windows ninety five and Windows
- 38:35Speaker 2: ninety eight and Windows XP and Vista, and then once
- 38:40Speaker 2: Windows eight came along, that was really the first realization
- 38:44Speaker 2: that they could put ads in the home screen. Yeah,
- 38:48Speaker 2: now you click the start bar and all of a sudden,
- 38:50Speaker 2: there's an ad for a you might want to search
- 38:53Speaker 2: for this based on your recent searches. It's like whoa
- 38:55Speaker 2: hold on what?
- 38:56Speaker 1: Yeah? Exactly?
- 38:57Speaker 2: And then you know they skipped nine to ten and
- 39:01Speaker 2: ten wasn't awful. You could customize your build when you
- 39:05Speaker 2: installed it to say, feed me any of this garbage,
- 39:09Speaker 2: and you could get a pretty stripped down version of
- 39:11Speaker 2: Windows ten with just the install, the base install.
- 39:13Speaker 1: Not evenmore. We got to take a break. We come back, Sean,
- 39:17Speaker 1: I told you about a problem I had. I fixed it.
- 39:20Speaker 1: I got it fixed. So when we come back, I'll
- 39:22Speaker 1: tell you what that problem was and how you may
- 39:24Speaker 1: be having the same issue, tell you how to fix that.
- 39:26Speaker 1: Coming up with tech talk Radio, I'm Andy Taylor.
- 39:29Speaker 2: I'm Sean to Weird. Find us on your favorite podcasting
- 39:31Speaker 2: platform and give us a like thumbs up, share it, YouTube,
- 39:34Speaker 2: you name it, get us out there. We love you guys.
- 39:36Speaker 1: That button and now back to tech talk radio. So
- 39:41Speaker 1: I had a problem, and I even had a comment
- 39:43Speaker 1: from somebody saying, you know, don't be so hard at yourself,
- 39:46Speaker 1: because I thought I did the stupid thing I have.
- 39:50Speaker 1: And I've mentioned this before. A computer in our studio
- 39:54Speaker 1: that originally was Windows ten. I had built a Windows
- 39:57Speaker 1: eleven computer. Seeing all this stuff was going to be happening,
- 40:01Speaker 1: and I went to install Adobe the suite that I
- 40:04Speaker 1: have that is phenomenal. I will say Adobe products are great.
- 40:09Speaker 1: This Adobe Creative Suite five to five was phenomenal. Did
- 40:12Speaker 1: everything I.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Needed to do.
- 40:14Speaker 1: I do video, I do you know after effects, I
- 40:17Speaker 1: do publishing, I do you know audio editing? And I
- 40:21Speaker 1: couldn't install it because it said I was installed too
- 40:23Speaker 1: many devices went through the rigamarole with Adobe. They said
- 40:27Speaker 1: they couldn't do anything for me. Their activation servers are gone.
- 40:30Speaker 1: So I had to preserve this computer Windows ten. So
- 40:34Speaker 1: I had to make the decision, well, how am I
- 40:36Speaker 1: going to upgrade it to Windows eleven. So I started
- 40:38Speaker 1: looking through it, looking at the computer. I made a
- 40:41Speaker 1: clone of that drive, put that in the system. It
- 40:44Speaker 1: booted up okay, and then I started going into bio
- 40:47Speaker 1: saying oh, can I prepare this to update it to
- 40:49Speaker 1: Windows eleven? And something? I did it just that was it.
- 40:54Speaker 1: It would not load anymore. Tried the backup drive that
- 40:58Speaker 1: would not load anymore. I thought, I've lost this. I've
- 41:01Speaker 1: lost this ability to have that extra Adobe Suite on it. Well,
- 41:05Speaker 1: as you know, I've talked about RUFUS and how RUFUS
- 41:08Speaker 1: has just been great, has allowed many people that have
- 41:12Speaker 1: not been ready to upgrade to Windows eleven yet to
- 41:14Speaker 1: do an upgrade. And the only upgrade feature I could
- 41:18Speaker 1: find was to update to Windows eleven on that computer,
- 41:22Speaker 1: which I could do because I did it on another drive.
- 41:26Speaker 1: I could do, but I would lose my programs. So
- 41:30Speaker 1: I thought, well, how am I going to get around this?
- 41:32Speaker 1: And I was reading about RUFUS and reading and I thought, well,
- 41:37Speaker 1: look at this and in place upgrade. I could do that. Well.
- 41:40Speaker 1: I tried and in place upgrade on another computer that
- 41:44Speaker 1: I had here at the station, and it worked. All
- 41:47Speaker 1: the programs there, everything's working, though, I'm going to try
- 41:50Speaker 1: that at home, And then I thought to myself, no,
- 41:53Speaker 1: you're better off fixing Windows ten. So I found my
- 41:58Speaker 1: LG backup DVD drive. I found my original disc that
- 42:02Speaker 1: I had for Windows ten, and I hooked it up,
- 42:06Speaker 1: booted up to the disc and went into repair mode,
- 42:10Speaker 1: and I thought, let's see if it can fix it.
- 42:11Speaker 1: I mean, who knows. Didn't change anything with the settings
- 42:14Speaker 1: that I had been messing with in the bios of
- 42:18Speaker 1: the UEFI. And it took two times. But then I
- 42:22Speaker 1: walked out of the room while it said repairing the computer.
- 42:25Speaker 1: And when I walked back, probably about a half an
- 42:27Speaker 1: hour later, there it was Windows ten with the Adobe Suite.
- 42:32Speaker 1: I clicked on it to make sure it's not going
- 42:34Speaker 1: to tell me I have to, you know, reinstall or
- 42:37Speaker 1: and it was fine. So I was able to save
- 42:39Speaker 1: that computer. So now I have to make the decision, Sean,
- 42:44Speaker 1: do I use that computer as my recording source in
- 42:47Speaker 1: the studio because it has Adobe. I'm using Audacity now
- 42:51Speaker 1: and it works fine. But use the Adobe and have
- 42:54Speaker 1: that computer in the studio I've won in my office
- 42:56Speaker 1: one of my studio, the one in the office is
- 42:58Speaker 1: already Windows eleven. I'd have Windows ten in the studio
- 43:02Speaker 1: with the Adobe Suite, or take the chance to do
- 43:07Speaker 1: an an in place upgrade to Windows eleven, or just
- 43:11Speaker 1: keep it Windows ten. Don't connect it to the internet.
- 43:14Speaker 1: Just connect it to the network, you know, using an
- 43:16Speaker 1: IP number and do it that way. What is gonna
- 43:20Speaker 1: be my solution? What do you think? What should I do?
- 43:23Speaker 2: Keep it Windows ten?
- 43:24Speaker 1: Yeah, and risk Why risk it?
- 43:28Speaker 2: It's not gonna hurt anything. If as long as you're
- 43:32Speaker 2: running Windows Defender now war bites yep, and not doing
- 43:37Speaker 2: something stupid.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Yeah, you're gonna be just fine. I only use it
- 43:41Speaker 1: for recording, recording and editing, and you'll.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Be just fine. It's so, it's a fun fact, right,
- 43:48Speaker 2: I looked this up earlier. I'd read an article. So
- 43:52Speaker 2: with the push to Windows eleven freaked a ton of
- 43:56Speaker 2: people out around the world. Right, A lot of people
- 43:59Speaker 2: were like, oh, oh my god, I can't I got upgrade.
- 44:02Speaker 2: I got upgrade. Somewhere around sixty five million new computers
- 44:07Speaker 2: were purchased or will be purchased, sixty five million. One
- 44:13Speaker 2: of these tech blogs I just read estimates that there's
- 44:16Speaker 2: four hundred million, four hundred million active Windows ten machines.
- 44:21Speaker 1: Wow, that's a lot.
- 44:23Speaker 2: Yeah, four hundred million. Think about that. That's four hundred
- 44:27Speaker 2: million processors, it's four hundred million motherboards, four hundred million
- 44:31Speaker 2: hard drives. That's just a mind blowing amount of stuff.
- 44:37Speaker 2: And to think that sixty five million of that's going
- 44:40Speaker 2: to be brand new. What's going to happen to the
- 44:43Speaker 2: sixty five million that they replaced E waste? I'm seeing
- 44:48Speaker 2: all sorts of articles coming out that people are going
- 44:50Speaker 2: to recycling centers, you know, computer recycling centers and hazardous
- 44:54Speaker 2: ways and finding machines with early jen NI nine's, early
- 45:00Speaker 2: gen early Gen I seven's with memory because people will
- 45:05Speaker 2: just they don't they just don't know. They go to
- 45:08Speaker 2: the store, and of course, I say, a good salesperson
- 45:10Speaker 2: is gonna be like, yeah, you gotta go. You gotta
- 45:12Speaker 2: go to Windows eleven. You can't stay at ted it's unsecure,
- 45:16Speaker 2: And that's just the fear around that is. I'm skeptical
- 45:19Speaker 2: about that, but that's how you get people to move forward.
- 45:25Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, security compliance is gonna be good and
- 45:27Speaker 2: it's gonna help, but I don't like the way the
- 45:30Speaker 2: Microsoft's going around going about it. I don't think outside
- 45:33Speaker 2: of this computer that I'm on now, I'll put Windows
- 45:36Speaker 2: on another machine. Yeah, well this will be my only
- 45:41Speaker 2: Windows machine. I have a couple of macs that I
- 45:44Speaker 2: work on do editing on. I think I will move
- 45:48Speaker 2: all by other ancillary stuff. I already moved one of
- 45:51Speaker 2: my laptops, the Linux Mint, just to play with. I
- 45:56Speaker 2: moved a Lenovo desktop that I had that was running
- 46:00Speaker 2: games for for Max and stuff. I put that on
- 46:03Speaker 2: Linux Mint. It's just I'm because that was part of
- 46:06Speaker 2: the one, you know, moving to Windows eleven from the
- 46:09Speaker 2: licenses that I had for Windows ten. Windows eleven Home
- 46:13Speaker 2: doesn't have remote desktop, so I had to upgrade to
- 46:17Speaker 2: pro to get because I was doing the upgrade from
- 46:21Speaker 2: remote desktop. I ran the upgrade for Windows eleven, ran it,
- 46:25Speaker 2: it rebooted, and then all of a sudden, it's like,
- 46:26Speaker 2: you can't connect to the remote desktop. Before I didn't,
- 46:29Speaker 2: did you have a keyboard, mouse or monitor? PUG didn't
- 46:32Speaker 2: do it because I was just using it as a
- 46:35Speaker 2: you know, a play server, just to put stuff on son.
- 46:37Speaker 2: All of a sudden, I can't connect to it, and
- 46:38Speaker 2: I'm like, what what's going on? So I did some
- 46:41Speaker 2: research that that's just that kind of stuff is frustrating
- 46:44Speaker 2: as a as a user is having an expectation that
- 46:48Speaker 2: an upgrade, an up an upgrade that I'm paying for
- 46:54Speaker 2: will include the things they already have in this version,
- 47:00Speaker 2: Like I get it. Some quality of life stuff maye.
- 47:03Speaker 2: You know, I can lose a couple of things down
- 47:05Speaker 2: here that maybe I didn't care about, but they were
- 47:07Speaker 2: features of Windows ten. But you can't have certain high
- 47:13Speaker 2: level features and then not make them available in the
- 47:16Speaker 2: next upgrade without going to another price here. That's just
- 47:20Speaker 2: shady and frustrating as a user.
- 47:22Speaker 1: I think a lot of people have been really frustrated
- 47:24Speaker 1: with with Microsoft in that respect. And like you went
- 47:28Speaker 1: the Linux on one of your boxes, you know, and
- 47:31Speaker 1: other people have said, well, I'll go Mac, you know,
- 47:33Speaker 1: and then they get into the learning curve and it's
- 47:36Speaker 1: it's it's not the same ball of wax. If they've
- 47:38Speaker 1: been used to using, you know, a Windows PC, well.
- 47:42Speaker 2: For sure, Yeah, if you're jumping, if you've never I mean, okay,
- 47:46Speaker 2: if you have an iPhone and you're a piece of user,
- 47:49Speaker 2: it's going to be an easier transition to a Mac,
- 47:52Speaker 2: right because the iOS functionality is very similar in terms
- 47:56Speaker 2: of user experience that it is. Sign a Mac. You're
- 47:59Speaker 2: gonna be familiar with icons, you're gonna be familiar with
- 48:01Speaker 2: some of this stuff. But if you're an Android user
- 48:03Speaker 2: and a piece of user and you're coming to a Mac.
- 48:06Speaker 2: It's gonna be night and day different. It's gonna be
- 48:09Speaker 2: trying to drive, like trying to drive a standard transmission. Right,
- 48:13Speaker 2: you're gonna stalled a couple of times, and you're gonna,
- 48:17Speaker 2: you know, have to try to learn how to stop
- 48:20Speaker 2: at a stop side on a hill going up and
- 48:22Speaker 2: try and get going again. So there's some some learning curves,
- 48:27Speaker 2: but it's not impossible.
- 48:29Speaker 1: But right, I mean, Max doing.
- 48:32Speaker 2: Some stuff the same kind of the way. You know,
- 48:35Speaker 2: they dropped Intel support. They they're dropping potentially dropping Rosetta
- 48:41Speaker 2: going forward, so even older older software that runs on
- 48:45Speaker 2: Rosetta for Intel translation between Intel and the new M
- 48:49Speaker 2: chips that's rumored to be going away in a couple
- 48:53Speaker 2: of next revisions. So it's just weird stuff that we're
- 48:58Speaker 2: starting to get siloed again with acknowledge you either have
- 49:01Speaker 2: to be Mac or Windows, and there's no you know,
- 49:05Speaker 2: you can't be agnostic anymore. Like it's you gotta.
- 49:07Speaker 1: Pick, you gotta pick which one? All right, here's something
- 49:10Speaker 1: do you ever get on next door?
- 49:12Speaker 2: Yes, occasion occasionally, So Caitlyn has it for our neighborhood.
- 49:17Speaker 2: I put it on my phone for like two minutes
- 49:19Speaker 2: and then immediately regretted it.
- 49:22Speaker 1: Next story is almost and I see a lot of
- 49:24Speaker 1: people commenting it's like Facebook, you know, but it is
- 49:27Speaker 1: your next door and there's a lot of people who
- 49:29Speaker 1: use it like we used to use Facebook. But I
- 49:32Speaker 1: saw I've seen a couple of things on next door
- 49:34Speaker 1: that I like, Oh, that's cool, you know. At somebody
- 49:37Speaker 1: on next door was asking about room of vacuums, and
- 49:41Speaker 1: there were some people who there that were keen on
- 49:43Speaker 1: sharing some of their experiences. When it came to the
- 49:47Speaker 1: room but vacuums, somebody said the pros the robot will
- 49:52Speaker 1: love you and cherish you. The cons it could turn
- 49:57Speaker 1: against you. I don't know how a rumba would turn
- 50:01Speaker 1: against you, but this one I thought was pretty good.
- 50:05Speaker 1: This guy has a name for his roomba for doing
- 50:10Speaker 1: the two parts of his home. He said, the new
- 50:13Speaker 1: roombas a guy named Michael who lives out in Picture Rocks.
- 50:15Speaker 1: The new roombas will map your space, then vacuum in
- 50:18Speaker 1: perfect lines. It even empties itself, which is true when
- 50:22Speaker 1: it has finished its job. He said, we have two
- 50:25Speaker 1: for different parts of our home. So he has two
- 50:27Speaker 1: roombas and he gave them a name. These are their names,
- 50:30Speaker 1: And if you're gonna name your rumbas, you can't go
- 50:32Speaker 1: wrong with this clean Latifa and dust Ben Bieber. Another
- 50:42Speaker 1: quick break. We come back. A couple of websites you
- 50:44Speaker 1: might want to check out for websites of the week.
- 50:46Speaker 1: We'll be back with more of tech Talk Radio. I'm
- 50:48Speaker 1: Andy Taylor, I'm Shana.
- 50:49Speaker 2: Were to check out our website at tech talk radio
- 50:51Speaker 2: dot com.
- 50:53Speaker 1: Be right back and now back to tech talk Radio.
- 50:58Speaker 1: John is still having fun looking at the TV garden.
- 51:01Speaker 1: TV dot garden is the website. You found a couple
- 51:03Speaker 1: of channels while we were doing the show.
- 51:05Speaker 2: Sorry, yeah, distracted, What was the question? No, So I'm
- 51:09Speaker 2: literally scrolling through thousands of channels from around the world.
- 51:13Speaker 2: This is just the US. I'm a big motorsports fan.
- 51:16Speaker 2: So mav TV is a channel that airs a lot
- 51:20Speaker 2: of lower, lower tier race race circuits, a lot of supercross,
- 51:24Speaker 2: a lot of motocross, supercars, you know, Australian supercars. It's
- 51:28Speaker 2: on here.
- 51:29Speaker 1: That's cool.
- 51:30Speaker 2: So I'm watching some really low low production value supercross
- 51:35Speaker 2: race right now. That's on. That's the stuff that I
- 51:38Speaker 2: like to watch when I just want to have someone
- 51:39Speaker 2: on the background. So it's like this is inc this
- 51:43Speaker 2: is a website that people need to know about like this,
- 51:46Speaker 2: it's TV Garden, TV dot Garden. All right.
- 51:50Speaker 1: Here, here's another one for you, Explore dot org. All right,
- 51:54Speaker 1: explore dot org. If you remember a site that was
- 51:57Speaker 1: very popular about ten years ago, Live cam, where you
- 52:01Speaker 1: could watch live cams from all over the world.
- 52:04Speaker 2: I do not need another distraction like this, Andy, This
- 52:08Speaker 2: is the type of website I will spend hours sitting on.
- 52:12Speaker 1: Oh no, and Explore on Org does it a little
- 52:15Speaker 1: differently too. You can look all over the world and
- 52:18Speaker 1: find out cameras that are in different places, maybe your
- 52:21Speaker 1: favorite town, and see what's going on down your boulevard.
- 52:24Speaker 1: But also they schedule cameras, so if you want to
- 52:28Speaker 1: see polar bears at in the Polar region, you can
- 52:33Speaker 1: do that. If you want to see airport operations at
- 52:35Speaker 1: a large airport, you can do that and they'll schedule it.
- 52:39Speaker 1: So tune in, you know, at ten am, you know,
- 52:42Speaker 1: on this day and watch it.
- 52:43Speaker 2: So this is something similar that Caitlin and I watch
- 52:45Speaker 2: every year. It's the Katami National Park Fat Bear Contest.
- 52:51Speaker 1: Well, yeah, that's on here.
- 52:52Speaker 2: It's on here. It's one that is one of our
- 52:55Speaker 2: favorite things to watch because we track sit like we
- 52:58Speaker 2: always like to try and fit pick our favorite and
- 53:00Speaker 2: just track it and see. And then one of them
- 53:03Speaker 2: died this year, so it was this big ding, like
- 53:04Speaker 2: everybody's super sad about it. But they have webcams up
- 53:07Speaker 2: in that National Park that just livestream these fat bears
- 53:12Speaker 2: eating salmon on the river and like it's This is
- 53:16Speaker 2: the part of the Internet that I love is the
- 53:18Speaker 2: stuff like this where you could just somebody had an
- 53:21Speaker 2: idea to go stick a webcam in the middle of
- 53:23Speaker 2: nowhere with a satellite phone or something and get a
- 53:28Speaker 2: relatively low resolution webcam back, but you can see what
- 53:31Speaker 2: it is.
- 53:32Speaker 1: Yeah, and you get.
- 53:33Speaker 2: To track fat bears while they're fattening up for hibernation.
- 53:37Speaker 1: All right, listen, we got to wrap the show, but
- 53:39Speaker 1: two websites to check out explore dot org and TV
- 53:43Speaker 1: dot Garden. Check those ones out. We'll be back next
- 53:46Speaker 1: week with more info. And you've got a question with
- 53:48Speaker 1: the show, email it to us tech guys at tech
- 53:50Speaker 1: talk radio dot com. I'm Andy Taylor.
- 53:52Speaker 2: I'm trying to wear it again. Subscribe to us on spreaker,
- 53:55Speaker 2: Spotify your podcast ploporform choice. We really love for you
- 53:59Speaker 2: guys to hear and YouTube there yep, YouTube watch our
- 54:02Speaker 2: YouTube shorts. Justin's really great now he's pretty the popular
