- 0:00Our number 2, Millary Condon, Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:04Network, Trenton Ken, take you until just before the top of the
- 0:07hour off the bench coming up at that time, Sean Lucas, 2 until
- 0:125. Overtime, Iowa from 5:00 until 6
- 0:16in about 10 minutes or so. We're going to talk some Saint
- 0:18Louis Cardinal baseball with our friend Brian Walton.
- 0:20thecardinalnation.com, cardinalnation.com for Brian and
- 0:24then preview the WNBA and in particular the Indiana Fever.
- 0:29I think I saw they were picked, oh, kind of in the middle, I
- 0:32think third, maybe top. A couple of lists came out.
- 0:36One of them was purely for clickbait.
- 0:38The top ten players in the WNBA, they had a 10th.
- 0:42I'm guessing they got he got the blowback he wanted.
- 0:45Absolutely yes. And it's funny that that 10th
- 0:48ranked player on the list, that was the one that showed up on
- 0:50all the social media and all the pictures and things like that.
- 0:53Not the number one player, no, as it should be with Asia
- 0:55Wilson. She should be.
- 0:57Yes, totally agree. Yeah, and.
- 0:59But that's 678, not. Collier up in the twin seas,
- 1:02pretty good player. Enrolled.
- 1:03Yes, absolutely. There's another one, but #10.
- 1:06No, no, come on. We'll I just hope, I hope she
- 1:09can stay healthy. I really do have a good have a
- 1:11healthy year, see how far that they can go and see how much,
- 1:15you know, are people still tuning in?
- 1:17We shall see. To win the championship.
- 1:20Are they third choice? They are the third choice.
- 1:24So it would be it would obviously be the two teams we
- 1:27just talked about, Aces and Lynx.
- 1:30Oh, the Liberty, NY still a favorite plus. 224 the Liberty
- 1:35Aces at plus 390 This is from DraftKings Fever plus 450 the
- 1:39Atlanta. Dream.
- 1:40Well, what's my kid talking about?
- 1:42That the links are free square. Well, they're 8 to 1 always,
- 1:45right? If it's a free square at 8:00 to
- 1:471:00, load it up. I have.
- 1:51What kind of prices were you getting?
- 1:52Well, I'm, I'm stacking them together, you know, OKC and
- 1:55Colorado and yeah, so much for that 8 to 1, like the fifth
- 2:01choice. How hilarious it'll be if you
- 2:03hit every leg and then it gets to the end and you get to yell.
- 2:05I'll be out by then. You'll be yelling to Kale.
- 2:07Oh, really? The lakes?
- 2:09Thanks son. I've never steered you wrong.
- 2:12Right. Yeah, Yeah, that's been all
- 2:13great advice throughout the years in the world of wagering.
- 2:17This is what the A. Couple of things I want to I
- 2:19want to get into the football schedule because it's coming out
- 2:21next week before hopefully, yeah, hopefully, although I
- 2:25think it was CNBC, they or maybe Sports Business Journal, one of
- 2:30those outfits said it will happen next Wednesday or
- 2:33Thursday. Buccaneer Arena close for good,
- 2:37close for good. Lot of good memories now.
- 2:39Not as many memories I'm sure as you had back in the day.
- 2:42I mean, were you your love of hockey?
- 2:44You know, you got out of the house a lot more I know back in
- 2:47the day than you do anymore. Was Buccaneer Arena like once a
- 2:51year? You try to get there.
- 2:52Oh yeah, probably. I mean, I think, you know, when
- 2:55we did our show, our afternoon show there, they made that run
- 3:01in the play offs. I want to say 2005 or 6.
- 3:06In fact, the guy that's playing on Minnesota, Jeff Petrie,
- 3:09defenceman was on that team. His dad, Dan Petrie pitch for
- 3:12the Tigers, the 86 World Series team, Dan Petrie, his kid Jeff,
- 3:17who's been in the NHLA long time.
- 3:19But so we, I was there all the time for those games and they
- 3:22were so much fun. And it's, it was really good
- 3:25hockey. And I'm still, I guess it still
- 3:27is, but there was just something about that building, right?
- 3:29That stink in a good way, not stink like OPU.
- 3:34It just, it felt like you were in an old barn, you know, I felt
- 3:38like I was home. I felt like a bunch of Canadian
- 3:41rinks that, you know, with the bowels of the arena.
- 3:44In fact, I think that's where the first time Sean Roberts
- 3:48introduced me to the time. His new girlfriend.
- 3:52Oh really? Kaylee who?
- 3:54His wife, obviously. I think that's where I met Sean
- 3:57and Kaylee for the first time. I read a game there.
- 4:00I went there a few times, especially right when I moved to
- 4:02town. It was cheap entertainment.
- 4:04Friday night went to that bar that's like Kitty corner from
- 4:07it. Have a couple of pops
- 4:08beforehand, then slide on over so.
- 4:11What was the name of that bar? I was.
- 4:12I've been at that bar, yes. There's, well, there's a couple.
- 4:15There were a couple. There was one that was a hockey
- 4:17bar. Yes, yeah.
- 4:19And I don't know if that's still the case anymore, but it
- 4:22reminded me. So my first ever hockey game was
- 4:26probably, I don't know, 8-9, ten years old, something like that
- 4:29at the North Iowa Fairgrounds. The North Iowa Huskies, who were
- 4:31then part of the USHL, where are they?
- 4:34And their coach, PKA O'hanley, I think was his name.
- 4:37They had a lot of success. They were good.
- 4:39But even in that where your markets are, Waterloo and Sioux
- 4:44Falls and Mason City was too small, they could not compete
- 4:48fight it. So they eventually moved and
- 4:50they have some other, I don't even know what level of league
- 4:52that plays there now, but that building like Buccaneer Arena
- 4:56looked like look like a palace in comparison to the North Iowa
- 5:01Fairgrounds of the way that they played.
- 5:03It was just a completely different world.
- 5:05Then went to a lot of Waterloo Blackhawks games also in the
- 5:07USHL when I was at you and I and then afterwards and I did a lot
- 5:11of work with them because the station that I worked at, we
- 5:14also broadcast the Blackhawks. So did a lot of that do nothing
- 5:17about the sport? And you had a drink though.
- 5:19That was part big part of the Friday nights, $2.00 beers.
- 5:21Yeah, it, it, it was a, it was a blast, absolute blast.
- 5:25I loved it and and now obviously they're tearing that day.
- 5:29You know what got it? If memory serves, I think that
- 5:31was derecho, right? I, I know we're, we're statewide
- 5:35now and I want to try to appeal to that portion of the audience
- 5:38as well. But this is a pretty cool.
- 5:40This is a big story because if you grew up in Des Moines, if
- 5:44you're a sports fan, you know clones aren't playing, Hawks
- 5:48aren't playing, whatever, Drake's not playing.
- 5:51You want to find something to do on a Friday night, Just
- 5:53something different. And it was a fun time.
- 5:56It was a fun Time Buccaneer Arena, but it's closed and I'm
- 5:59pretty sure that it was the roof that that got blown off during
- 6:07De Ray show. Remember that storm?
- 6:08We were on the air. Yeah, we were.
- 6:10We were doing our show here. Got a little windy?
- 6:14Little windy. But that's what that's what
- 6:15happened to him, right? That was the beginning of the
- 6:17end for Buccaneer Arena. I feel that.
- 6:19Pretty connection makes sense, yes.
- 6:21Pretty sure here's Todd real quick and then get to the NFL
- 6:24scheduling. Brian Walton coming up here in
- 6:26just a couple of minutes on the Cardinals.
- 6:28Hi, Todd, How are you? I good.
- 6:31I think the bar that you guys are talking about is the
- 6:33Ridgemont because it had like the fast times at Ridgemont logo
- 6:38almost. And then one of my favorite
- 6:41memories of being a young man in my 20s was quote UN quote buck
- 6:46beer night where a beer was a dollar and you could buy like 6
- 6:50at a time. I mean, just great times in that
- 6:53building. No, there was some fun times, no
- 6:56doubt about it. Thanks for the call, Todd.
- 6:59I don't know what they're do, don't know what they're going to
- 7:00do with the land or how much it's worth, but.
- 7:03Well, and that area I drove by not too long ago, like there
- 7:06used to be that huge Kmart out there that was right across the
- 7:09street. Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 7:11That is no longer that's that well, Kmart's no longer but
- 7:14there you know that area, what you can do developmentally wise
- 7:18and and what makes sense because the.
- 7:20Ridgemont, are we dead? So what it?
- 7:21Was yes, that was fun place yeah, had good times in that one
- 7:25that area. How you build, you know, places
- 7:27like that back up and and kind of get it because can they do
- 7:31anything? I told you I went to a hockey
- 7:32game now a couple months ago there at the, at the, at the
- 7:35recplex. Recplex.
- 7:37It's not a big building, though. It, it wasn't built for that,
- 7:40for a USHL team. I don't know the finances behind
- 7:43it or anything like that. Well, they were going.
- 7:44To Merle Hay Rd. you remember that?
- 7:46Absolutely, that fell through or Merle Hay Mall rather and and
- 7:49that fell through. And there's been back and forth
- 7:51about that, about the possibility of it coming back
- 7:54hockey in this market. It is interesting because we saw
- 7:57what happened over in Iowa City, in Coralville and with the well
- 8:01AA affiliate. Yeah, whatever, Whatever the
- 8:02consideration is for that and going away at least for a year.
- 8:06No, I don't think they're coming back.
- 8:07I think that's probably the end. Is it, and those are completely
- 8:12different circumstances. We're talking USHL where you got
- 8:15kids high school age that are doing it compared to guys that
- 8:18are moving their way up in the minor leagues.
- 8:19I just, I don't know the financials behind it.
- 8:22That is hard to wrap your mind around what it costs to operate
- 8:24those kind of things. And because television revenue
- 8:27is not there. No, that's what we talk about
- 8:29college athletics and we're talking about the pros.
- 8:31This is a completely different. So you have to have butts in the
- 8:34seats. The season ticket base I know is
- 8:36incredibly important. My wife's uncle is a season
- 8:40ticket holder up in Sioux City for what are Musketeers.
- 8:43Maybe that sounds right. Yes.
- 8:45He is a season ticket holder though and and they do
- 8:47everything to keep them year after year after year because
- 8:50you want to have that guaranteed money that you know for 30,
- 8:54whatever dates it is throughout the course of the season that
- 8:56that ticket is paid for. If you can ever if you're in the
- 8:59business where you're looking to hire salespeople, that's a tough
- 9:03sell. And if they've done it for any
- 9:04length of time, that would be the person that guy or gal that
- 9:07I would be interviewing. Let's move on.
- 9:09I want to talk about the real quick.
- 9:10It was to Rachel 2001. Thank you Jeff Holder.
- 9:13That took the roof off and was the beginning of the end for
- 9:16that facility. The NA, the NFL schedule
- 9:21apparently is coming out on Wednesday or Thursday of next
- 9:25week. And the reason apparently for
- 9:27the delay is do you remember that we were in the, we were
- 9:31going to get double headers on Monday night, like 4 of them.
- 9:35And then all of a sudden those double headers went away.
- 9:40That the, that the league or ESPN and the league decided not
- 9:43we were just going to go back to a stand alone game on Monday
- 9:47night. Apparently that's not the case.
- 9:49Those four games that we were going to have one on ABC are
- 9:53ESPN and then the four nights with they would be on ABC.
- 9:57The second game they're going to be sold to a Netflix or one of
- 10:03the streaming companies that wants to have this.
- 10:06So it does sound as though when the when the schedule comes out
- 10:09next week, we're going to have 4:00 Monday nights with two
- 10:14games, one of them on TV, the other one on the streaming
- 10:17service. And I don't like the two games.
- 10:20It's not my favorite. If they could do it in a way,
- 10:22and I know that this is asking a lot, especially for the East
- 10:25Coast, to start a game at 10:00 Eastern.
- 10:27Yeah, that's it's a big ask, right?
- 10:30But on the other hand, you start a game Pacific Time at 5:00 when
- 10:33you're stuck in traffic. Yep, I don't think there is a a
- 10:37right answer for this. I personally, I'm fine with the
- 10:41late game as people, our listeners know my schedule and
- 10:43yes, late, it's not a problem for me.
- 10:46What I really didn't like is when they were like stacked on
- 10:48top of each other, right? It was like an hour.
- 10:50Six o'clock 7:00. Well, and now you're combining
- 10:53it and we go back to old man radio switching.
- 10:56Uh huh. It's on a streamer.
- 10:57So then you got to hit the input button and you get back to the
- 10:59home screen and then you're going here.
- 11:01No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. And then you're buffering if the
- 11:03internet's not good. Let's if we're going to do this,
- 11:07they have to be separated. I would.
- 11:09Think. TV executives would know better.
- 11:12Ray Cole would know better than certainly us.
- 11:15Why can't you start that first game though?
- 11:17I know West Coast that's going to impact it.
- 11:19But if it is Jets, Patriots start that game. 6:00 Eastern,
- 11:25five o'clock. 3:00 Pacific. I don't know what the TV
- 11:29numbers, how it dictates it, but could you get, get, get away
- 11:33with something like that, stagger it in that fashion and
- 11:36go that direction where everything starts at six, 5:00
- 11:38for us, Perfect. 3:00 Pacific. I get it.
- 11:41But and then today's environment, I mean, what
- 11:44percentage of people now work from home, work remotely?
- 11:48It's obviously 2020 changed all of that.
- 11:50And the way things are done, we see that just the way that
- 11:53people consume things has changed.
- 11:55How many games I watch on my phone these days, it's
- 11:58incredible in comparison, because until we get the kids to
- 12:01bed, that's a big part of if I'm going to see anything, that's
- 12:03the way that I have to do it, and I'm going to guess that I'm
- 12:06not. Alone.
- 12:06No, no, no, no, no. No, you have ATV set in your
- 12:09pocket. You do.
- 12:10If you want it and you can go that direction.
- 12:12Too, So I don't like it, but it's there.
- 12:15All right, we'll get Brian Walt momentarily.
- 12:17Corey's Corey joins the program. Corey, what's on your mind?
- 12:21Got a question, looking for a little advice.
- 12:24Well, you've come to the right place.
- 12:26You're looking for. I thought so.
- 12:28I don't know. If you guys are familiar with
- 12:30DraftKings running their Grand Slam promotion right now Very
- 12:34much. Well, yesterday there was at 1.5
- 12:37million and and it hit and I happened to be one of the
- 12:40winners that got that. Nice.
- 12:42Well done. First of all, so I don't know
- 12:44what I don't know the promotion, but it you're not.
- 12:46Sharing it, right? Yes.
- 12:47Remember that promotion that I won?
- 12:49Yes, a couple years ago and I won, I think it was six $300
- 12:54free bets. I think that.
- 12:55Remember that, yes. So that's when I hit that.
- 12:57And I'm gonna guess who was your Grand Slam winner?
- 13:00Who did you have last night? CJ Abrams with the Nationals.
- 13:04So I'm going to guess not a whole lot of people had that.
- 13:06What kind of bonus bets are you looking at?
- 13:09We it was 2025 dollars. So just a single one or can you
- 13:14cut it? Off No they they paid it out in
- 13:16$4050 bets. 40 and what, how how long do you have to use those
- 13:22bets, Corey? Two weeks I got to have it spent
- 13:26by a week or two weeks from the day get busy.
- 13:29So. What do you think is the best
- 13:31way of to get a little strategy for risk?
- 13:33Well, I would, I would buy futures going out to as many as
- 13:37I possibly could on the NFL. Hell, you could tie.
- 13:39It's, it's, it's house money. Tie up everybody.
- 13:43Half the Super Bowl winner, right?
- 13:45So you got $4050 bets? Yeah, I would identify a handful
- 13:50of teams in the NFL you really like, and Ken and I talk about
- 13:53you want to take that lottery ticket that you've already hit
- 13:55and you want to take it a step further.
- 13:57Take the Dodgers, Take OK C take four or five NFL teams under
- 14:03that. Stack them together like that.
- 14:05Build that championship parlay and.
- 14:07Throw the fever in at a couple of them.
- 14:10Though at $50 bet suddenly you are looking at a real lottery
- 14:13ticket. Absolutely.
- 14:14And then I would also do a, you know, I would take OK C on the
- 14:18money line just to turned it over, right, just let the back
- 14:22end to get something back. I'm immediate cat.
- 14:25Yeah, absolutely. Ohh, Corey, that's a, that's a
- 14:27huge hit. Well done.
- 14:28Monster. Well done, Corey.
- 14:30Yeah. Yeah, the the best part was is
- 14:32they let you do it and up to three people in a parlay and you
- 14:35had your qualifying bet token. Well, I I put it with three guys
- 14:39and I hit my three man parlay with Pete Alonzo and Brandon
- 14:43Love. So to that, pay it out.
- 14:44A nice bet too. That's awesome.
- 14:46Yeah, I I did that last night as.
- 14:47Well, thanks for listening. Appreciate it.
- 14:49Yeah. Thank you.
- 14:50I my 3:00 that I chose, I had Okamoto, you know, didn't hold
- 14:54her. No.
- 14:55Oh, Tony didn't hold her. They scored twelve runs, yeah,
- 14:59against Houston and Mike Trout, no Homer.
- 15:01So the promo was you bet on, you can do up to a three person
- 15:06parlay, home run prop or just bet a guy individual.
- 15:08It has to be a minimum of $5 that you put in there.
- 15:11So of course I bet $5 on that one.
- 15:13And if your guy not only hits a home run, hits a Grand Slam the
- 15:17first one, you are the winner. Then it cuts up between them.
- 15:20And when you got somebody like Abrams, right?
- 15:22That's where I wonder. Why he took him I should have.
- 15:24Asked Yeah, $4050 free bets. That's going to be fun to play
- 15:28around. Dude, all right, Saint Louis
- 15:29Cardinal conversation coming up. We're going to line up Brian
- 15:31Walton. Trent's doing that as we speak.
- 15:34We'll get Brian Walton from thecardinalnation.com.
- 15:37One of the good stories. I don't know if they're going to
- 15:39hang around or not, but my gosh, here we are approaching the
- 15:43what? What's the date today, 7th of
- 15:44May, and they're well above 500. They're 21 up and 15 down, good
- 15:50enough for second place in the Central Division of the National
- 15:53League. Cubs obviously red hot and
- 15:55leading the way after they've won eight straight.
- 15:57Brewers, I think, are playing a little bit better baseball.
- 16:00I watched Paul Skeens last night pitch against.
- 16:03I didn't watch every pitch, but I watched enough of including
- 16:06his final inning last night. He pitched.
- 16:08I pinched against Arizona and they took him out.
- 16:10They pulled him after the 8th inning, I want to say struck out
- 16:13the side the 8th. He was unbelievable just
- 16:15watching him pitch, you know, you're watching one of the best
- 16:18in the game and I truly hope that that he's able to stay
- 16:23healthy. You know, Scubal obviously going
- 16:25with these going through now the best in the American League.
- 16:27But skeins, he's just on a different level.
- 16:29Here's Brian Walton, he covers the Cardinals
- 16:31thecardinalnation.com. Did you happen to see any of
- 16:34skeins last night, Brian, before we get into the Cardinals and,
- 16:37and do you believe that he truly is, as I do at this point,
- 16:41established himself as the among the elite pitchers in all the
- 16:45baseball? Yes, I agree with you, Ken, and
- 16:48I have to say that fortunately I don't have my blinders on
- 16:52because if I only watch skis when he pitched against the
- 16:55Cardinals. He had good point.
- 16:57Kryptonite. Yes, he's like oh, and five in
- 16:59his career against, he's like Joe Journeyman.
- 17:02Yeah, 2019. Now he looks like the multiple
- 17:06Sai Young Award winner he's going to beat.
- 17:07So is there anything to that or is that just a complete anomaly,
- 17:11do you think? Obviously, I mean, they got a
- 17:13good game plan where they're going up to the batter's box 1
- 17:16would assume or is it an anomaly?
- 17:17What do you make of that, Brian? What's behind it, do you think?
- 17:21There are guys we've seen in the history of baseball and the
- 17:23history of any sport that another team seems to have their
- 17:26number. And I have no, no reason why.
- 17:28If I did, I'd help the Cardinals, you know, win every
- 17:31game all year long. But you know, you get up now to
- 17:34567 career start and the outcome is similar every time.
- 17:38You got to think they're sports with it.
- 17:41Brian, I'm going to shoot you a call back.
- 17:43Your phone line just a little bit fuzzy here.
- 17:45We're going to give you a call back here real quickly and and
- 17:47get you back aboard and talk a little more Cardinals because
- 17:50can you set it? This is one of the stories
- 17:52certainly of the National League and this is what we felt felt we
- 17:55had the most, right. We kind of like the Reds.
- 17:57We kind of like the Pirates coming into the year, obviously.
- 17:59Come forward to finish last, Trent.
- 18:01And here we are. Yeah.
- 18:03Well, we reconnect with Brian Walton.
- 18:04It wasn't the best of best of connections even this all of
- 18:08those years later, right, Cell phones have been out now
- 18:10forever. We still can't get these damn
- 18:12things to be as as as good as you would think a landline would
- 18:17be. But we'll reconnect with Brian.
- 18:19We'll pick his brain on going forward with this Cardinal team.
- 18:23I think that they're I I think management might be in a tough
- 18:26spot 'cause this is quote, although they didn't wouldn't
- 18:28say as much. We think it's kind of in that,
- 18:30you know, that rebuild. But what if they do hang around?
- 18:34What if they do? The plan does get escalated and
- 18:37certainly more than they would think.
- 18:38If they're in it, will they be willing to do something or do
- 18:41they do like we've seen other teams in the past?
- 18:43Just kind of, you know, admit that, yeah, we're having a good
- 18:47year, but we don't feel like we're ready to take that next
- 18:50step. We shall see.
- 18:51All right, Brian Walton back with us.
- 18:53Brian, we're having trouble phone line wise.
- 18:55So we'll we'll make the best of it.
- 18:56But, you know, we're just kind of we're join this run.
- 18:59We really are. It's it's seemingly came out of
- 19:02nowhere. At least we thought this was
- 19:03going to be a building year. Cardinal fans were going to, you
- 19:06know, make their make their feelings heard by not showing up
- 19:11at Busch Stadium. Crowds maybe haven't been as
- 19:13what they've been, but they're better than what we thought, at
- 19:15least so far. What's behind this, this great
- 19:19start that they've put together, Brian?
- 19:22I have to agree, Ken. I mean, on the I think it was
- 19:24the 19th or so, they came off a series which they swept and then
- 19:29they promptly went to Miami and lost two straight and got beat
- 19:32three straight at home by Seattle.
- 19:33And it was sort of like, OK, here we go again.
- 19:36Then they go to Pittsburgh, which is obviously a much
- 19:38improved team, and they swept them fourth straight, including
- 19:41their victory over skiing. And then they played the
- 19:43Dodgers. Tough one to you know.
- 19:45So, you know, the Cardinals are playing well.
- 19:47They're starting pitching. That's been healthy and it's
- 19:50been good. Better than expected, not
- 19:53exceptional, but in their offense, of course, led by
- 19:57Jordan Walker, JJ Weatherholt, who might be, you know, one of
- 20:00the certainly one of the leading candidates for rookie of the
- 20:03year, Yvonne Herrera continue to show growth.
- 20:06So they've got and Burleson is good.
- 20:08So they've got this young corps of hitters that are starting to
- 20:11play together really well, and they find, hey, maybe we don't
- 20:13need the Goldschmidt, the Arnottos in the Contras to win.
- 20:18Mason Wynn is a guy that's been fun to watch his last couple
- 20:20years. He's still only 24 years old
- 20:22going into his third full season with the Cardinals.
- 20:25Is there another tier to him offensively?
- 20:27Another tier that he can get to going from a good solid contact
- 20:31guy, a little bit of pop in the bat.
- 20:32Is there a next level for Mason Wynn?
- 20:35Yeah, I just think that the risk trick with Mason Wynn is that if
- 20:39he if he decides he wants to try to start to hit for power and
- 20:42sell out, he's going to lose his effectiveness.
- 20:46You know, has an OB right around 3:50, which is great.
- 20:49And I frankly thought that they were going to put him in the
- 20:51lead off spot this year. As it's turned out, Weatherholt
- 20:54has done very well there. But I think Wynn has the
- 20:57capability not only to be a top of the order guide, but if he
- 21:00can ever stay healthy, can steal a lot more bases than he has.
- 21:03And Wynn has had a variety of nagging injuries going back to
- 21:07last year. But again, as you said, he's
- 21:09only 24, Walker's only 24. So these these guys that are in
- 21:14the core of their lineup are still very, very young, still
- 21:16meaning experiences for us. The pitching was going to be
- 21:19somewhat of a question mark going into it starting wise, but
- 21:22I'll tell you guys that I've really I've really come to enjoy
- 21:25watching him pitch and that's Michael Mcgreevy.
- 21:28And then on top of her really good interview with Rosenthal, I
- 21:30think it was Saturday night of the Dodgers game.
- 21:34Mcgreevy started in that game. We went, I want to say 6
- 21:36innings. But Michael Mcgreevy, what's his
- 21:38ceiling? Brian Walton, he looks as
- 21:40though, you know, the Cardinals might have something here in
- 21:43Mcgreevy. What's his ceiling?
- 21:45Maybe he has always guy who is just irritated the heck out of
- 21:50him to walk a batter. He battles, he gets in the
- 21:54background, he doesn't strike out a ton of guys.
- 21:56His strikeout rate is like 6, little less than six per nine
- 22:00innings. So he's not your prototypical
- 22:02ace, But if you want a guy that's going to go out there and
- 22:04give you 180 innings, give you a 3 ERA, you know, that's the kind
- 22:09of guy that Michael Brevi looks like he could beat for a long,
- 22:11long time. The other thing he does is he
- 22:13keeps the ball in the park well, so, you know, there's a lot to
- 22:16be said. You know, he's not blowing them
- 22:18away with 100 mile an hour fastball.
- 22:20But the guy knows how to pitch. And I know that's a cliche, but
- 22:23again, we're talking about the youngest man in the Cardinals
- 22:25rotation, also just 25 years old, Michael Mcgree.
- 22:29He is gone now. Mazelik obviously has departed
- 22:32as the front office head, but you look through a lot of these
- 22:36guys came in under his tutelage and that's kind of the reality
- 22:40of it. Is there at least a little bit
- 22:42of parting shot and a good one for John Mazelik on his way out
- 22:45the door after he departed and and what he has been able to do
- 22:47kind of build this young core that they have currently?
- 22:51Well, I think that there's we're Saint Louis now aren't on prime
- 22:56blooms watch, but I will say that Daylock engineered a
- 23:00strategy that was to spend money on high-priced stars to try to
- 23:06buoy the lineup enough that they could commit and compete in the
- 23:09playoffs. And that strategy didn't work.
- 23:11And so the key for the Cardinals wasn't additions.
- 23:14It was really subtraction of money, but also opening up lanes
- 23:18for young players to play. So Xerox record speaks for
- 23:21itself. And yeah, the last few years
- 23:23were tough, but you can see that the championships, the division
- 23:27titles, the success that Cardinals had for many, many,
- 23:29many years. Brian, we'll get you out of here
- 23:31on this. Brian Walton,
- 23:32thecardinalnation.com. Let's let's play.
- 23:34What if, let's get crazy that this team is still right there.
- 23:38They're chasing the Cubs. Reds are falling off a little
- 23:41bit. The Brewers are kind of a 500
- 23:43team. The Cardinals are the closest
- 23:44pursuer to we'll say Chicago at this point.
- 23:47This was supposed to be, quote, a rebuilding year.
- 23:50At least that was kind of the consensus.
- 23:51They would never admit to that because they wanted the fans to
- 23:54show up, obviously, but what what would they do if they get
- 23:58to the trade deadline or it's approaching?
- 24:00They're still in the hunt. Do you think that they would be
- 24:02almost forced to do something, Brian, or would they say status
- 24:05quo? What's your thoughts there?
- 24:08Well, I think they're in a great position, Ken.
- 24:10And what I mean is that the biggest weakness on this team,
- 24:13no doubt clear, is their bullpen, 27th in the major
- 24:18leagues in ERA. Beyond the two guys at the top
- 24:21of the bullpen, O'Brien and JoJo Romero, it's not in good shape.
- 24:26What's the easiest thing to pick up at the trade deadline?
- 24:29A reliever on a expiring contract To pick them up
- 24:32cheaply, you don't have to give up a top 10 prospect.
- 24:34The Cardinals went out. If they were in contention in
- 24:36July, They go out and pick up two or three veteran relievers.
- 24:39And that might be enough to push them forward, assuming that they
- 24:42stay healthy because behind the guys are playing now, there's
- 24:45not a lot of depth, Very, very weak.
- 24:48They don't have a lot of talent at AAA, But if they can stay
- 24:50healthy, they can compete. Fun story so far, 21 up, 15 down
- 24:55on May the 7th. Good stuff.
- 24:56Brian, Walt, thecardinalnation.com.
- 24:58We'll talk to you in the weeks ahead.
- 24:59Thanks Brian. Appreciate you jumping on.
- 25:03Thank you. Bye.
- 25:03Bye. Yeah, good to talk to you, Brian
- 25:04Walton, as we check in on the red birds at 21 and 15.
- 25:08Our little WNBA preview next with Scott Agnes, who covers the
- 25:12Indiana Fever. Transplays of the Day, Circus
- 25:14sports sponsor those that's coming up as well, Miller and
- 25:17Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 25:19Miller, Condon, welcome back just past 130 on a Thursday.
- 25:23Transplays of the day still to come soon Trent will be
- 25:27including some WNBA plays as the season gets underway this week.
- 25:32This weekend, Indiana host Dallas on Saturday, that is an
- 25:37ABC affair. Noon central here in the state
- 25:41of Iowa. Let's get to Scott Agnes.
- 25:43He covers them at Fieldhouse Files at Fieldhouse Files or
- 25:46Scott on Twitter at Scott Agnes and where he's got over 32,000
- 25:51followers living and dying on his every word when it comes to
- 25:55the fever. Scott Trenton, Ken, thanks for
- 25:57coming on. It's great to talk to you.
- 25:58How are you? Appreciate it.
- 26:01Just looking forward to getting this season going man.
- 26:03I tell you what, Caitlin is giddy about getting back to
- 26:07business. Yeah, absolutely in the league,
- 26:10Mr. And we missed her here in the state of Iowa.
- 26:13You know, fringe WNBA fans or fans are only watching these,
- 26:17watching it because of #22 So you're around every day, you're
- 26:21at all the press conferences, et cetera.
- 26:22Have you seen, do you notice a difference in here?
- 26:25Just maybe more hunger. What do you notice this
- 26:28different about Caitlin this year?
- 26:30She gets set for, I guess an abbreviated year #3 at least to
- 26:34start after missing most of last year.
- 26:36What do you notice different, if anything?
- 26:38Yeah. I would say more than anything,
- 26:40it's just how she's carrying herself both confidently and
- 26:43having fun. Their smiles is joy with her
- 26:46teammates seems less stressed out and more about knowing, hey,
- 26:50I can just focus on the basketball again.
- 26:52Because last year it was borderline miserable for her,
- 26:55both from a inability to play on the court, which also meant an
- 26:59ability to contribute on the court.
- 27:00And it's so isolating to to be and so helpless to be on the
- 27:05outside or be there on the bench.
- 27:06She attended every game but one last year, home and road to be
- 27:11there for her teammates and to be there for her fans, signing
- 27:13autographs before each game. So I think just on the court,
- 27:18she just is free because she's she's back to feeling like
- 27:21herself. I think guys, it was so
- 27:23important for her to do that USA Basketball because then the last
- 27:26couple of months we're about this season, we're about
- 27:29preparing for this rather than about rehab.
- 27:32And then how do I feel what what happens when I plant with this
- 27:35leg, etcetera. So I think she's in a very good
- 27:38spot. Seeing her physically, the way
- 27:40that her body changed, I definitely showed up last year.
- 27:42You saw that going from her rookie year where she didn't
- 27:45have an offseason, went right from the college season into the
- 27:47WAWNBA, her rookie year. A Physically, just what you're
- 27:51seeing for her developmentally and and how does she want to
- 27:54kind of build herself, build her body into a player now playing
- 27:57in this level? I thought it was interesting
- 27:59this time last year, what was everybody talking about?
- 28:01It's get all the muscles she gained, added and gained.
- 28:04And there's been none of that talk right now.
- 28:07And so it almost makes me wonder if her body was just comfortable
- 28:10at a certain weight at a certain level because that is what has
- 28:13been essentially most of her Iowa career and went outside the
- 28:17normal little bit perhaps. And you never know what little
- 28:20things can be big changes for these athletes were just
- 28:24everything is minimal. That's the amount of the number
- 28:29of changes that you do or do not want to make with everything.
- 28:31So I think she's in a good spot. Obviously a lot of attention's
- 28:34been given the last week when she started wearing a left leg
- 28:38sleeve on her left leg. But you look around practice and
- 28:41more than half the roster is it's almost become a funny
- 28:45moment. I think everyone, especially
- 28:46Kate Caitlin, like Caitlin laughed at the question because
- 28:49she's like, look, I'm not the only one here.
- 28:51Half my team is including most of the starters.
- 28:53So she that's just another example guys of her being the
- 28:57needle. If she's wearing a headband,
- 28:58that's something if she's wearing a leg sleeve, it's
- 29:00something because people want to know why and maybe others will
- 29:03like I'm I will not be surprised if this upcoming winner, if she
- 29:07continues on. If that you know, you go to AAU
- 29:10match game and and all of a sudden girls are wearing less
- 29:13leg sleeves. Why?
- 29:15Because Caitlyn's doing. It yeah, without without a doubt
- 29:17that absolutely is going to happen.
- 29:19I I agree with you. What how about the team overall?
- 29:23Is this team better than a healthy team like going into
- 29:27last year? Do you think that this team,
- 29:29obviously Liberty in New York, the Aces, Minnesota, the Lynx
- 29:33have a decent team as well. Do you think that this is an
- 29:36upper echelon team in the WNBA? I guess can they win it all,
- 29:39Scott? Yeah, I, I do think they can.
- 29:42I would probably put them around 3rd right now just because the
- 29:46biggest uncertainty comes with the four spot at the power
- 29:49forward you had incoming last year was Dwana Bonner and that
- 29:53obviously did not pan out well. She wanted to leave after a
- 29:56couple of weeks and so that was really a non factor.
- 29:59Then after that what you did have was a player, Natasha
- 30:01Howard, who's won multiple championships, who is a true
- 30:04veteran on the on this team and was actually MVP of the
- 30:08Commissioner Cup championship. So she was impactful, but I
- 30:11think what they wanted to do was get a little bit younger someone
- 30:14who knew exactly in her role. And I think they saw up close
- 30:18and personal Amber Cox, the general manager, Stephanie
- 30:21Wyden, assistant coach with USA Basketball, is they saw Caitlin
- 30:25work with Monique Billings and obviously Kelsey can do the same
- 30:28in a pick and roll. We know the chemistry that Clark
- 30:31and Mitchell already have with Aliyah Boston on the interior.
- 30:34The biggest question mark league wide to me is just what every
- 30:38other team looks like because I've never seen a league have
- 30:40so, so many substantial changes, right?
- 30:43So much turnover because of the CBA and how players
- 30:46strategically had designed their contracts to come up so they
- 30:50could get new ones here. And so a lot of wild cards
- 30:53there. I think they're right there
- 30:55though, with Las Vegas and New York and and maybe LA will get a
- 30:58good look at that in about a week.
- 31:00Get them healthy and yeah, that could definitely be a program
- 31:03changer after all their. Injuries Was hurt most of the
- 31:05year. Absolutely.
- 31:06So Kate Martin got cut today and I think you have learned the way
- 31:10that as I was like to make those connections.
- 31:13And obviously the friendship and the relationship that those two
- 31:15had during their playing careers.
- 31:17Is a roster set for the Fever. Or even if it's not Kate Martin,
- 31:21is there still more tweaking that could happen here in the
- 31:23early moments of the season? Yeah, they'll at least make one
- 31:26more move here and that would be with their new player
- 31:28development spot. They already signed their second
- 31:31round pick, Justine Passat to one of the two and there will be
- 31:34another one to come here in the formality.
- 31:37First of All in all this is that any player they wave, which they
- 31:40did yesterday, you have to wait 48 hours for them to clear
- 31:43waivers. If they do, then you can bring a
- 31:46player back and there's several good options from camp.
- 31:49I think someone like Kate Martin could fit that bill.
- 31:51She has a couple years of experience in the in the league
- 31:54and on top on top of that, she knows Caitlin probably better
- 31:57than anyone. As you guys saw up close and
- 31:59personal. I was one of those that during
- 32:01that draft, I said, hey, look, if you're going to take a flyer,
- 32:04you might as well draft someone that can play alongside
- 32:08alongside Caitlin and make her happy and be that friend in a
- 32:11new league, right? And they ended up, if I remember
- 32:14right, they waved that player, whoever they drafted like 2
- 32:17spots later. But the other thing here is I'm
- 32:21considering other options as well.
- 32:23I especially at that forward spot.
- 32:25We'll see what Monique Billings ankle injury if it'll keep her
- 32:28out or make her limited Already they were a smaller bunch, so
- 32:32there has been some more curiosity about adding a little
- 32:36bit more size rather than a six foot point guard combo guard.
- 32:41Realistically I think she would be a good fit but unclear if
- 32:46they'll go that route. And again, because she was just
- 32:48waved, she would have to wait 48 hours to clear waivers to go
- 32:51somewhere else. Scott Agnes is our guest at
- 32:53Fieldhouse Files on X. You can follow Scott on X as
- 32:57well. I want to ask you this Scott
- 32:59Raven Johnson. I I forgot all about this.
- 33:01I remembered it, you know, when I didn't know it was her.
- 33:03But when you go back to the semifinal of the first of the
- 33:06back-to-back final four appearances or championship
- 33:09appearances for for Iowa when they played South Carolina,
- 33:15there was a part of the game where Caitlin just kind of we
- 33:18don't have to guard you. And that player turned it out to
- 33:21be the first round pick of the Fever this year.
- 33:24Raven Johnson. What's that dynamic?
- 33:27Did they have to talk it out or was it Was it ever awkward at
- 33:30all between Caitlin and Raven? Or is that a long time ago where
- 33:34teammates now let's move forward.
- 33:36Yeah, I think it's exactly that last point.
- 33:38For one, I had forgotten about that moment until someone
- 33:41reminded me both about Caitlin's gesture and and who it was
- 33:44again. So it feels like a lifetime ago.
- 33:47And for Caitlin, who dealt with all the injuries she did last
- 33:49year, probably feels like even longer.
- 33:51But no, those two seem to be on an incredible wavelength.
- 33:54I think Raven understands. Look, she's a rookie.
- 33:57She's fresh out of the Final Four, fresh from being drafted.
- 34:00She has so much to learn about this league.
- 34:02And so she's been a sponge in practice.
- 34:04Players have said she's been just just pestering them in a
- 34:07good way with questions, trying to learn.
- 34:09And, and the number one person there is Caitlin in that
- 34:12position. And I think they complement each
- 34:14other so well, especially because, you know, Raven's
- 34:17specialty is defense, Caitlin's specialty is offense.
- 34:20So Raven can really help offset some of the ball handling
- 34:24responsibilities, like when you're trying to get Caitlin
- 34:28some breather here. Here's how I see it playing out
- 34:30is Caitlin will start, she'll be the primary scorer with that
- 34:33first group. Then you saw you could sub her
- 34:36out for a get a quick minute blow.
- 34:38And during that stretch, then Kelsey becomes the the primary
- 34:41scorer offensively. And Raven, though, is the one
- 34:44organizing it, is running the running point, shouldering the
- 34:48ball, handling, and then also picking things up defensively.
- 34:51And so there's a lot of different things.
- 34:53This is the thing I also try to remind people is last year, I
- 34:56think we only saw a minimal amount of true coaching and, and
- 35:00what they could really get into due to the frequent changes, the
- 35:03key players that were out. So I think you're going to see a
- 35:05lot more creativity in this coaching staff in Year 2 use,
- 35:10you know, the full extent of their playbook, things that they
- 35:12just weren't able to get to even in camp last year because there
- 35:15were about 3 injuries back then. You cover this team, but also
- 35:21this sport. We joke from time to time here
- 35:23about Cy Hawk, Twitter, Iowa State fans going back and forth
- 35:27at each other. I know it can be toxic in many
- 35:29different realms of sports. Phantom, the WNBA.
- 35:33To me though, it feels like it's a different level.
- 35:36What is it like covering a sport that at times can feel
- 35:39incredibly toxic from a bunch of different dynamics?
- 35:42What is it like when you're writing something annoying?
- 35:45You know what? This is probably going to create
- 35:47a crap storm. Yeah, one of the one of the
- 35:50things I laugh at is people like to create rivalries when there's
- 35:53nothing there. For example, that was something
- 35:57like with the Chicago Sky there. The people have never had a
- 36:00rivalry with them, certainly. And I've covered the team for
- 36:04quite a while, more than a decade.
- 36:05If anything, I would throw in people.
- 36:07Your audience may not even remember this.
- 36:08This is so long ago. If you want to throw in a feeble
- 36:11rivalry, I might go with the Detroit Shock back in the early
- 36:152000s there with Bill Lambier coach team.
- 36:18But nonetheless, yeah, whether I don't know whether it's
- 36:20rivalries or pitting players against one another, I think a
- 36:25lot of. It is is.
- 36:27New fans to the WNBA, they they're learning what it's like,
- 36:30you know, and how how teams operate and and that sort of
- 36:34thing. And then I also hope with all
- 36:36this you just got to wonder. Like there's the assumption and
- 36:40I get it's fandom that right? But like, writing about one
- 36:43player does not mean you hate the other or asking about one
- 36:46player does not mean you dislike like another.
- 36:48And I think there's a lot of that unhealthy banter on there.
- 36:52And so if coach talks or highlights one player, it
- 36:55doesn't mean she doesn't want to highlight Caitlin or doesn't
- 36:57want to highlight Kelsey Mitchell.
- 36:59It's what they are being asked. And those are the little things
- 37:02that just are complete poor reads of the entire situation.
- 37:06But I do appreciate the love and, and and support all these
- 37:10new fans of coming of age have felt.
- 37:13But I think there's a steep, there's been a learning curve
- 37:16for some of them about all this. And I think that's why it's
- 37:18great to see so many former players on these TV broadcasts
- 37:22that they can really help set the table for what things can be
- 37:25about. That's an excellent point.
- 37:27Where can people find your work at Fieldhouse Files?
- 37:29Is that the best place, Scott? I want to make sure that people
- 37:31can find you. Yeah, primarily Fieldhouse
- 37:34files.com with my newsletter and stories, and then a big audience
- 37:37over on YouTube as well, where I post daily recaps and full
- 37:40interviews. Good stuff, Scott.
- 37:42Thanks for jumping on giving us a preview of 2026.
- 37:45Appreciate. We'll talk to you down the road.
- 37:46Thank you, Scott. Yeah, let's do it.
- 37:48Absolutely good to talk to you Scott, Agnes as we check in on
- 37:51the Fever and the WNBA as they get set to and no surprise, I
- 37:55mean TV execs got it right. Bring Paige in there and as he
- 37:59fund and have a go against Caitlin and the company ABC
- 38:03noontime on Saturday, I bet they do a good number.
- 38:06I'm sure they we will has has it faded though.
- 38:10I won. That's what I'm wondering.
- 38:12I I can't wait to I'm. Going to be very interested
- 38:14because what do we? NBA playoffs, NHL playoffs, OK,
- 38:16yeah, we know that. What else is?
- 38:18We got Braves, Dodgers. But baseball we know is more of
- 38:21a regional thing. I don't think it's late enough
- 38:23in the season that a series like that really is going to matter.
- 38:27What else is happening this weekend?
- 38:28It's Mother's Day weekend, but that's Sunday.
- 38:33What else is happening this weekend?
- 38:35There's not a ton. Well, there is live racing in
- 38:37Prairie Friday. And Saturday, you got that?
- 38:39Absolutely. ABC will have it.
- 38:42What'd you say? Noon tip, noon tip, noon tip.
- 38:45This will be 1 to keep an eye. PGA is next weekend.
- 38:47Yep. So there's no golf to get in the
- 38:49way. Well, it's an elevated event
- 38:50with the Truest this weekend. And it was delayed yesterday,
- 38:53right? Did I see that?
- 38:55So there's that. I think it'll do a good number.
- 38:59I think it will. All right.
- 39:00Trent's plays of the day, they're next.
- 39:02Good day yesterday. Did you?
- 39:04Yes. I'll take your word for it.
- 39:06I wasn't here. We weren't here.
- 39:07Did you do? We went, let me pull it back up.
- 39:09We went four and one. That is a good day.
- 39:11We will definitely take that. We hit both of our props.
- 39:14Skeens 7 plus strikeouts at plus. 131 of ALDI over 5 1/2 at
- 39:19plus. One, you know when he got to
- 39:21seven, his final inning. I was watching.
- 39:23I was because it was on MLB Network.
- 39:25So we have. Oh, is that where it was?
- 39:27We hit the over the first quarter of the Knicks Sixers
- 39:30game hit the Sixers and I told you I was looking at the T
- 39:32Wolves game one of two ways. It's either going to be a 30
- 39:35point blowout or the T Wolves were going to play tough.
- 39:37They did not. No, I took the wrong side of
- 39:39that one. That was the one else, so we'll
- 39:40try to stack it up. OK, I like it.
- 39:43That's next. Can we go?
- 39:44Back-to-back hot days. It's a rare.
- 39:47I'd like to see it, I really. Would well, hopefully sometime
- 39:50before your retirement it happens.
- 39:51I got six weeks. You do, by the way, Circa
- 39:54Sports. Join us tomorrow when Mike Palm
- 39:56comes on with Trent and I tomorrow at 12:30.
- 39:59Circa and Cakes don't have an. A pretty exciting announcement
- 40:03that we're going to share with you.
- 40:04That's tomorrow at 12:30. We will get to that when Mike
- 40:07joins us. Trans place of the day Circus
- 40:09sports sponsor them. They're coming up next on Miller
- 40:11and Condon. It's Des Moines sports station,
- 40:13106 point. Hi Miller and Condon, final
- 40:16couple of minutes on a Thursday. The we're starting to get, and
- 40:22we will in the days ahead, start to get some little Nuggets on
- 40:24the NFL schedule. Take them kind of with a grain
- 40:28of salt, some of them. You've learned I have you used
- 40:30to take those things hook, line and take.
- 40:32Absolutely. I I love it.
- 40:35It's one of my favorite times of the year when the NFL schedule
- 40:38comes out, one of my favorite radio days the next day.
- 40:40But apparently Netflix is going to have the game in in
- 40:43Australia. OK, the it's Rams, Niners.
- 40:46Right, Rams. Niners, that game is going to be
- 40:49a Netflix affair, so that's where we will find that one and
- 40:54we'll get more little trinkets in the day slash weeks ahead.
- 40:57All right Trent, let's put them back-to-back.
- 41:00Who do you like? Let's kick it off.
- 41:01It's all NBA today. All NBA we're going to play over
- 41:05to 11 in the Lakers. OK C tonight going to jump
- 41:09aboard with the Pistons laying 3 1/2 and then two prop bets for
- 41:12this evening. LeBron under 6 1/2 rebounds prop
- 41:16bets. As you know, undo stop bet is
- 41:18where he can go and right now at undo stop bet, you can get seven
- 41:21days free and a 30% off your first month with the code KX and
- 41:25O undouced dot bet for that one. And then I found one that it's
- 41:30an alt point total. James Harden goes off tonight.
- 41:34He does. If he does.
- 41:35OK. And goes over 34 and a half 35
- 41:38plus points 15 to 1. The unjust app says that there
- 41:44is good expected value on that one it.
- 41:48Should be hard. 35 or more. Just put a half unit on it, but
- 41:5215 to one, if that hits that, that's gonna change the way that
- 41:56the week looks and maybe the month looks.
- 41:57What's the What's his playoff average so far?
- 42:01Has he? But has he had a big, big night
- 42:02like this or no? Not even sure I have not been
- 42:05tuned into the series involved. I hate James Harden.
- 42:08Watching James Harden play basketball.
- 42:10I shouldn't say I hate James Harden.
- 42:11That's not right, that's not fair.
- 42:13I don't hate him as a person. I didn't have ever done anything
- 42:16to you. No, no, no.
- 42:18Maybe missed a shot or something when there was a.
- 42:20His style of basketball bothered me before it was in vogue.
- 42:25That bothered everybody. I felt like I was at the
- 42:27forefront of that. And now, boy, that OK.
- 42:29It could have been back in the now.
- 42:30They're pretty good now, yes. Yeah, it's.
- 42:32Worked out OK, yeah. Absolutely.
- 42:34All right, good to be back. We'll do it again tomorrow.
- 42:36Mike Palm, 12:30 be listening for an announcement.
- 42:38KXNO and Circa now more to more 1230 coming up next off the
- 42:44bench. They'll take you until 5:00

- 42:51and Condo. We talk sports with you Monday
