Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Routine Is The Gift That Keeps On Giving
Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily a body here. You are listening to
- 0:24Speaker 1: five Minute Friday from Hurdle. I am recording live looking
- 0:28Speaker 1: at the water right now on a Virgin Voyages cruise ship. It.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Eh my gosh. It feels a little silly to talk
- 0:35Speaker 1: about this because there's so much going on in the world,
- 0:37Speaker 1: but this was something that I planned back in November,
- 0:39Speaker 1: and so I am getting off the ship tomorrow. I've
- 0:43Speaker 1: been on it for a week. Unfortunately, we haven't had
- 0:45Speaker 1: the best weather. It's been rainy and cloudy for most
- 0:48Speaker 1: of the time here. I think out of the seven days,
- 0:50Speaker 1: we got one day of sun. But an amazing place
- 0:54Speaker 1: to be despite the fact that it wasn't sunny and bright.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I mean, the facilities are gorgeous. The restaurants are top notch.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I went to Extra Virgin last night. If you live
- 1:03Speaker 1: in New York, you know how amazing their food is
- 1:06Speaker 1: and so much fitness. Like the fitness facilities on this
- 1:10Speaker 1: boat are mind blowing and something like twenty classes a day. Again,
- 1:15Speaker 1: so much different than anything I ever remember cruising to be.
- 1:19Speaker 1: So if you are looking for some sort of a
- 1:22Speaker 1: trip that I would say is pretty budget conscious, I
- 1:26Speaker 1: would definitely recommend looking into going on a Virgin Voyages cruise.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I digress. I've been thinking a lot this week because
- 1:35Speaker 1: I'm out of my usual one about routine, and it's
- 1:39Speaker 1: something that I'm writing about in the newsletter day I
- 1:41Speaker 1: talked about recently on social as well. Routine, in my mind,
- 1:46Speaker 1: is such a gift, and there are always going to
- 1:49Speaker 1: be things that beckon us to get out of our
- 1:52Speaker 1: routine right whether it is uncontrollable circumstance, even though you
- 1:56Speaker 1: may be home, whether it is travel, work, travel, disagreements
- 1:59Speaker 1: or with friends or loved ones that make you feel
- 2:02Speaker 1: some kind of way. So many different things can pull
- 2:05Speaker 1: us out of our normal routine or make it feel
- 2:07Speaker 1: like the routine is not possible. But what has been
- 2:11Speaker 1: a constant for me, despite so much uncontrollable over the
- 2:14Speaker 1: last three sixty five is doing the same things almost
- 2:18Speaker 1: every single day, although those things might look a little
- 2:22Speaker 1: bit different. So the aspects of my routine right now
- 2:24Speaker 1: that feel so good to me, my morning routine habit stack,
- 2:28Speaker 1: if you will. It involves breathwork, journaling, gratitude, moving my body,
- 2:35Speaker 1: light exposure. Those are non negotiables for me, and like
- 2:38Speaker 1: I said, they still might look a little bit different
- 2:41Speaker 1: depending on my circumstance. So, for instance, on the cruise
- 2:44Speaker 1: this week, I have a schedule that I'm sticking to.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I am training for the Cherry Blossom ten miler in
- 2:52Speaker 1: April in Washington, d C. And so I have running
- 2:55Speaker 1: that I've had to do. I also stick to a
- 2:58Speaker 1: string training routine. I've had strength workouts that i have
- 3:01Speaker 1: to do, and then I've been doing all the other things,
- 3:04Speaker 1: even though it's been a little bit cloudy with the
- 3:06Speaker 1: light exposure. So for me, the reason why I am
- 3:09Speaker 1: so firm on this being something that I beckon you
- 3:12Speaker 1: to integrate is that there's so much goodness in it.
- 3:16Speaker 1: When I execute on my routine to the best of
- 3:20Speaker 1: my ability, the world shows up for me because I
- 3:23Speaker 1: show up for myself. And I know that sounds a
- 3:25Speaker 1: little woo woo, right, It sounds a little flufy, if
- 3:28Speaker 1: you will, but it is the truth because when I
- 3:31Speaker 1: fill my own cup, I have a more optimistic perspective
- 3:35Speaker 1: on what is available to me, what my options are,
- 3:40Speaker 1: what I am capable of doing. When we don't pour
- 3:43Speaker 1: into our own cup, when you don't put on your
- 3:45Speaker 1: own oxygen mask first, you are less capable of doing
- 3:48Speaker 1: anything for the people that are around you, and so
- 3:52Speaker 1: you don't need to do what I'm doing. I actually
- 3:54Speaker 1: don't want you to do what I'm doing if it
- 3:56Speaker 1: doesn't feel good for you. That is the first question
- 3:59Speaker 1: that you've got to ask yourself when it comes to
- 4:00Speaker 1: implementing any sort of routine, is what feels good for
- 4:04Speaker 1: insert your name here, get honest about that, and also
- 4:08Speaker 1: meet yourself with where you're at. So maybe you do
- 4:11Speaker 1: want to integrate some sort of a journaling practice into
- 4:14Speaker 1: your routine, but at this point writing for a full
- 4:17Speaker 1: page or two doesn't seem accessible. That's also okay. Start
- 4:21Speaker 1: with writing one thing a day that you're grateful for.
- 4:24Speaker 1: If you are not writing anything at all right now,
- 4:26Speaker 1: and then you just want to start writing the next
- 4:27Speaker 1: great American novel. It's the part of your morning routine.
- 4:30Speaker 1: It's probably not going to stick. So meet yourself with
- 4:35Speaker 1: where you're at, and trust me, you will have no
- 4:38Speaker 1: regrets about it. The power of the routine. I'm telling
- 4:41Speaker 1: you my prompt for you this week. Take a look
- 4:44Speaker 1: at what you're doing right now, what's working, what's not,
- 4:46Speaker 1: and is there something that you can add into your
- 4:49Speaker 1: morning that's going to make you feel like the world
- 4:52Speaker 1: also wants to show up for you again. Take a
- 4:54Speaker 1: look at your morning routine. What's something that's working right now,
- 4:57Speaker 1: what's one thing that you may want to add in,
- 5:00Speaker 1: and what feels good for insert your name in the blank,
- 5:04Speaker 1: and now a listener question. Hey, Emily, my name is
- 5:08Speaker 1: Brittany and I am looking for a running shoe suggestion.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I'm not a crazy runner, but I am someone who
- 5:13Speaker 1: logs something about ten to fifteen miles a week and
- 5:17Speaker 1: searching for something that's comfortable and not too expensive. Would
- 5:20Speaker 1: love your thoughts. Thanks. Okay, comfortable and not too expensive.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I'm going to say this, while I can understand having
- 5:28Speaker 1: a budget for your sneaker situation, I want to encourage
- 5:32Speaker 1: you to invest in yourself, knowing that you are getting
- 5:34Speaker 1: something that's going to dramatically impact you for the better.
- 5:38Speaker 1: With that caveat out there, you can often find a
- 5:42Speaker 1: lot of the shoes that I'm about to recommend to you.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Maybe it's like a version or too older than the
- 5:47Speaker 1: newest version. So like the new A six Nimbus twenty seven,
- 5:51Speaker 1: you can get the twenty six or the twenty five
- 5:53Speaker 1: online and it will still be such a great staple
- 5:56Speaker 1: for your rotation, So might go to neutral running sneaker.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Here we go the Nike Pegass. They're also coming out
- 6:04Speaker 1: with a new iteration of their Romero shortly, which I've been.
- 6:08Speaker 1: It was a sneaker that I chose to bring with
- 6:09Speaker 1: me on this cruise and it has been Chef's Kiss
- 6:12Speaker 1: really awesome. The Acex Superblast is one of my favorites.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Also the Acex Nimbus, and there's a brand new Acex
- 6:20Speaker 1: Nimbus out there. Brooks Ghost Max heavily in the rotation
- 6:24Speaker 1: right now. Really big fan of that shoe. I love
- 6:26Speaker 1: the extra cushion from the regular book Brooks Ghost. It
- 6:29Speaker 1: feels really good underfoot. I've run up to something like
- 6:32Speaker 1: twenty miles in that shoe, so I can say it's
- 6:34Speaker 1: great for everything from a five K to really going
- 6:37Speaker 1: the distance. And then I'm going to round it out
- 6:41Speaker 1: with God, what's the last thing that's right by my
- 6:43Speaker 1: friend door right now? Oh? The Hokah mock is by
- 6:47Speaker 1: the door right now. Really like that sneaker. I'm also
- 6:50Speaker 1: a Bondie fan. I feel like you have to kind
- 6:52Speaker 1: of find your sweet spot with Hoka. Go into your
- 6:55Speaker 1: run specialty store. The closest one to your place. Try
- 6:58Speaker 1: a bunch of them, run on the treadmill and see
- 7:00Speaker 1: what feels good for you. But the mock is also
- 7:03Speaker 1: a neutral running sneaker that's in my regular rotation. Hope
- 7:06Speaker 1: these help If you need any more Rex I am
- 7:09Speaker 1: all ears and also always here for your listener questions.
