- 0:41Speaker 2: I don't know what Tom is.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Hey, we gotta go here, we gotta go. Let go
- 0:47Speaker 3: so Tom.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, welcome to another episode of The Tailgate presented
- 0:57Speaker 1: by Continental Diamond. I'm your host Scion, and your Minnesota
- 1:01Speaker 1: Vikings are fresh off their first victory of the season.
- 1:06Speaker 1: My sports emotional meltdown has been put on hold, but
- 1:10Speaker 1: unfortunately the team that's in front of us is daunting
- 1:14Speaker 1: and the man that is joining us fantastic comedian, good
- 1:17Speaker 1: friend of mine, Ladies and gentlemen, Chris Schlichten, High chrass.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Hello, I am honored.
- 1:24Speaker 3: I like to think it came down between me and
- 1:27Speaker 3: Paul Rudd, and you made the executive decision to go
- 1:30Speaker 3: with me, and I'm honored.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Man.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Paul wanted it. Paul wanted it, but I was like,
- 1:35Speaker 1: do you think too many people know? Paul? Yeah, now
- 1:38Speaker 1: here's I'm I'm gonna be very honest with you. You're not
- 1:41Speaker 1: climbing over Paul Rudd. It's never gonna happen. And you
- 1:45Speaker 1: know that, just like I'm not climbing over pick Minnesota
- 1:49Speaker 1: sports celebrity and put him in here.
- 1:51Speaker 2: But I gotta go.
- 1:53Speaker 1: But here's the thing, Chris. The reason that I thought
- 1:55Speaker 1: of you is you are kind of the go to
- 1:59Speaker 1: chiefs for comedians. There's a lot of like, I'm that
- 2:03Speaker 1: guy for the Vikings, Me and Swartzen, our friend Zach Martina,
- 2:08Speaker 1: friend of the program from the Lions. He's the go
- 2:11Speaker 1: to guy for the Lions. We are the guys that
- 2:14Speaker 1: are synonymous within the comedian world with our favorite team,
- 2:18Speaker 1: and which also means we are the human beings who
- 2:21Speaker 1: whenever our team loses, it is not fun to have
- 2:25Speaker 1: a phone.
- 2:26Speaker 2: No.
- 2:26Speaker 3: It's my rule, is sy that when they win, When
- 2:31Speaker 3: the Chiefs win, I had something to do with it.
- 2:34Speaker 3: I was involved in the process. I'm a part of
- 2:37Speaker 3: the organization.
- 2:38Speaker 2: It's we I let people know that we did win.
- 2:42Speaker 3: On the flip side of that coin, when they do lose,
- 2:45Speaker 3: as if I didn't watch the game, people like to
- 2:47Speaker 3: let me know, including Zach Martine, who brought who you
- 2:51Speaker 3: brought up. I haven't really talked to him since the
- 2:54Speaker 3: first game of the season this year, because, yeah, he
- 2:57Speaker 3: reminded me that the Lions won. I was at the game.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I was at the game. I took the five and
- 3:02Speaker 3: a half hour drive home thinking about the game.
- 3:05Speaker 2: So thank you Zach for that. A movie.
- 3:08Speaker 1: I grew up in southwestern Minnesota, and the drive to
- 3:12Speaker 1: get that is a tough thing. When you get so
- 3:16Speaker 1: enthused to go see your favorite team and they lose,
- 3:19Speaker 1: and you're like, well, I guess I'll listen to music
- 3:23Speaker 1: for six hours by myself or even it's almost even
- 3:27Speaker 1: worse when you're with somebody, because it's so fun going there,
- 3:30Speaker 1: and it's so fun during the game, and even though
- 3:33Speaker 1: I don't hang on to losses in sports mode, they
- 3:36Speaker 1: don't bother me beyond, you know, a few minutes after
- 3:39Speaker 1: the game. But it's hard to not notice the difference
- 3:41Speaker 1: and energy from a car ride from the sticks to
- 3:45Speaker 1: a game as opposed to a loss back to the sticks.
- 3:49Speaker 1: That is a very that is a very different energy.
- 3:53Speaker 2: That's a good point.
- 3:53Speaker 3: And I also think just the process because I'm not
- 3:56Speaker 3: in Kansas City. I'm in Davenport, Iowa. So the process
- 4:00Speaker 3: of going to a game is you know, pretty intentional
- 4:03Speaker 3: with me, with the family and stuff. So when I go,
- 4:06Speaker 3: I do expect wins because it was hard to get
- 4:10Speaker 3: out of you know, making dinner for the family or
- 4:13Speaker 3: you know, picking up the kids. So you know, I
- 4:16Speaker 3: don't ask much, Andy Reid, but if you could produce
- 4:19Speaker 3: a win, that'd be great.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Davenport, Iowa town that we keep glossing over, is named
- 4:25Speaker 1: after a couch. It's a weird town. Chris the that
- 4:29Speaker 1: was my Uh, that was my radio DJ guy who
- 4:33Speaker 1: can't make jokes voice.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Oh good, Davidport, why don't you lay down. Let's you're
- 4:39Speaker 4: here with cy On the Raccoon in the morning. Let's
- 4:43Speaker 4: let's talk about the funny name of this Iowa town.
- 4:46Speaker 1: I'm talentless, uh. Going back to what you're talking about
- 4:49Speaker 1: about that energy with everybody, you know, coming after you
- 4:54Speaker 1: when you lose. There's something unique about it being a
- 4:56Speaker 1: comedian thing because comedians know how to cut in this way,
- 5:01Speaker 1: like they're pros at it. They spend their life writing
- 5:04Speaker 1: jokes and destroying Heckler's So when somebody's really on one,
- 5:09Speaker 1: it can it can pull you apart. Back when the
- 5:13Speaker 1: Vikings lost the NFC Championship to the New Orleans Saints,
- 5:19Speaker 1: fantastic Minneapolis comedian Nate Abshire, everybody got together to watch
- 5:24Speaker 1: the game and Nate Abshire was He's he's from down there.
- 5:27Speaker 1: He's from New Orleans, that the Louisiana area. He is
- 5:31Speaker 1: an incredible cook. He's like, I'll make some gumbo and
- 5:34Speaker 1: I'll come. And what he meant by make some gumbo
- 5:38Speaker 1: is he made some soup and then he showed up,
- 5:41Speaker 1: had a bunch of adult beverages and was so mean. Well,
- 5:46Speaker 1: we so funny and so mean. I can't be around
- 5:51Speaker 1: stuff like that. I've had to basically let my comedian
- 5:54Speaker 1: friends know you're too mean and funny. If you text
- 5:57Speaker 1: me after my team loses, we're on a friendship break man.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Yeah, so I kind of on the same note, But
- 6:03Speaker 3: like unlike you, I take a loss pretty hard. For
- 6:06Speaker 3: a couple of days, and I almost expect other Chiefs
- 6:09Speaker 3: fans to take it as hard.
- 6:12Speaker 2: I have been to some losses.
- 6:14Speaker 3: I went and saw that playoff game where they played
- 6:16Speaker 3: Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh beat us and they only kicked field
- 6:19Speaker 3: goals oof.
- 6:20Speaker 1: And it was a.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Couple of years ago, and I remember being in the
- 6:23Speaker 3: stadium after the in the parking lot almost like mad
- 6:27Speaker 3: at people for like joking and smiling with their Chiefs
- 6:30Speaker 3: gro And I'm like, you guys don't know. I just
- 6:33Speaker 3: I demand more out of Chiefs Kingdom.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Sometimes the uh, there's nothing that's ever surprised me less.
- 6:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna give people a picture. Because we're doing this
- 6:42Speaker 1: via the magic of the internet. You have a setup
- 6:46Speaker 1: that is both amazing and also requisite of somebody who
- 6:51Speaker 1: might kidnap the opposing team's coach in the playoffs. Like
- 6:57Speaker 1: that's the look like if you found out that, you know,
- 7:00Speaker 1: let's say, if you found out Sean McDermott had a
- 7:03Speaker 1: dog that was really important to him, you could put
- 7:07Speaker 1: this picture of you up with your Chiefs flags and
- 7:10Speaker 1: blankets and hats and gear and memorabilia. Ever, we could
- 7:13Speaker 1: put that up and be like you're never gonna believe it.
- 7:16Speaker 1: This guy kidnapped Sean McDermott's dog. Yeah, that's the vibe
- 7:22Speaker 1: you're putting out right now.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Yeah, and you know, I'm very proud of my Chief's collection,
- 7:27Speaker 3: my man cave. However, side lately, I've been looking over
- 7:31Speaker 3: my I do have a couple of jerseys.
- 7:33Speaker 2: I'm a fan, and like I said, I love to collect.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Do you want to specify because it's not a couple.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Do you want to specify?
- 7:40Speaker 3: Okay, last I counted, which is alway already a problematic.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Last I counted, I.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Have seventeen seventeen Chiefs jerseys, all home, all read. I'm
- 7:52Speaker 3: essentially buying numbers and a couple of different letters.
- 7:56Speaker 2: But yeah, I look at it. And there was a
- 7:59Speaker 2: time when I was really proud. I was really proud.
- 8:02Speaker 2: But lately I'm like, dude, I'm forty one.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm an adult. I don't wear these anywhere else.
- 8:08Speaker 3: I don't go to the grocery store. No.
- 8:10Speaker 2: See, that's right.
- 8:11Speaker 1: That's that's where I draw the line with the jersey,
- 8:13Speaker 1: because I have some pretty harsh opinions about jersey. If
- 8:17Speaker 1: you are going to the game, whatever age you are, Jersey, Yes,
- 8:23Speaker 1: love it. If you are going to your son's soccer game,
- 8:27Speaker 1: you know, I don't know if you need to throw
- 8:31Speaker 1: on your Travis kelse I'm not sure that you do.
- 8:35Speaker 1: So I would be lying if I said when I
- 8:38Speaker 1: see those people, I didn't go you're grown You're a
- 8:42Speaker 1: grown up. But I'm not going to bag on you
- 8:45Speaker 1: for owning the I own a bunch of jerseys. I
- 8:47Speaker 1: wear them to the game. It's that's a part of
- 8:51Speaker 1: the fun.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Absolutely, Like, for instance, I won't wear a Travis Kelcey
- 8:55Speaker 3: jersey to a Chiefs game because I'm guaranteeing you I'm
- 8:57Speaker 3: gonna see five hundred other ones, you know what I mean.
- 9:00Speaker 3: So I try to go obscure. I have an Andre
- 9:02Speaker 3: Riis in. I have a Warren Moon. I forgot that
- 9:05Speaker 3: Warren Moon was.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Ah see now, daddy, Chris, now you're see this is
- 9:10Speaker 1: I've got an Anthony Carter.
- 9:12Speaker 2: There we go.
- 9:13Speaker 1: I've gotten Anthony Carter. I can't find it. But I
- 9:15Speaker 1: had a Randall Cunningham, a Vikings Randall Cunningham. So that's
- 9:20Speaker 1: now now you're talking. Okay, now, andre Rising, that's a
- 9:23Speaker 1: nice pull.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Bad Moon. Yeah he was.
- 9:26Speaker 3: You had a brief run. He did this awesome thing
- 9:28Speaker 3: where he was kind of using the Spider Man nickname,
- 9:31Speaker 3: and every time he would catch a ball, he would
- 9:34Speaker 3: crouch down the web.
- 9:38Speaker 1: I remember that like.
- 9:39Speaker 3: My my hair on my arms, sitting because that was
- 9:42Speaker 3: so awesome.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Oh sorry.
- 9:45Speaker 3: When he would catch a touchdown pass, he would stick
- 9:48Speaker 3: to the goal poles like he was.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Spider Man climbing the building. Life changing.
- 9:53Speaker 3: It blew my mind as a comic book fan. With
- 9:56Speaker 3: combining the best of both worlds.
- 9:57Speaker 1: You have kind of an interesting story becoming a Chiefs fan, though,
- 10:00Speaker 1: because you are from Iowa. I grew up my dad
- 10:03Speaker 1: watched the Vikings and I'm a Viking fan. But you
- 10:06Speaker 1: were kind of sucked into the Chiefs via a very
- 10:10Speaker 1: specific player, and it makes sense one of the greatest
- 10:12Speaker 1: players in NFL history, but you were You were kind
- 10:15Speaker 1: of sucked in by a player.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:17Speaker 3: For me, it was Derek Thomas. He played my position
- 10:21Speaker 3: that I played.
- 10:23Speaker 2: I played his position. He didn't play.
- 10:25Speaker 1: He wasn't like, no, no, no, no, no no. I think you
- 10:27Speaker 1: did it right. Chris. Everybody at home, in your cars,
- 10:31Speaker 1: wherever you're at, let it be known. Derek Thomas played
- 10:35Speaker 1: Chris Schlichting's position.
- 10:39Speaker 2: That made me feel really good. Actually, but yeah, it
- 10:42Speaker 2: was Derek Thomas.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Growing up where I grew up, it was it was Bears, Packers, Vikings,
- 10:47Speaker 3: not many Chiefs fans. Actually, my dad was a Bears fan,
- 10:50Speaker 3: so I grew up kind of a Bears fan. Fell
- 10:53Speaker 3: in love with Derek Thomas for a birthday present when
- 10:55Speaker 3: I was a freshman in high school, I got to
- 10:57Speaker 3: go to Arrowhead Stadium at the time, and that's when
- 11:01Speaker 3: I just figured, oh, this is It'll be way easier
- 11:04Speaker 3: just to be a fan of the entire organization because
- 11:07Speaker 3: a scene a game at Arrowhead is incredible. It's just
- 11:11Speaker 3: it is. You can attest. It is one of the
- 11:14Speaker 3: you never bet. I'm sure you've heard that. It's probably
- 11:16Speaker 3: one of the better places to see a game.
- 11:18Speaker 1: It's a lot like Lambeau in that the Vikings have
- 11:21Speaker 1: an amazing facility. Their stadium is impossible to beat. It's
- 11:26Speaker 1: that good. But there are these places. You know, Packers
- 11:30Speaker 1: fans like to think it's because these are the hallowed
- 11:32Speaker 1: grounds that Vince Lombody walked, and you can sense it
- 11:37Speaker 1: as you enter the town. I think it's just the
- 11:42Speaker 1: way they were built, and you know the way it
- 11:45Speaker 1: feels to sit in them. Every seat in Kansas City's
- 11:50Speaker 1: stadium just feels right. It's kind of that mixture in
- 11:54Speaker 1: between college football and professional football. It's just the vibe
- 11:59Speaker 1: of it is incredible.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'm getting chills just the way you talked
- 12:03Speaker 3: about it.
- 12:03Speaker 2: I just love it.
- 12:04Speaker 3: But uh so, after I saw that game and I
- 12:07Speaker 3: became a fan, I became a cheese fan. But there
- 12:09Speaker 3: wasn't there wasn't a lot of us in the Quad
- 12:12Speaker 3: Cities in Danvenport, Iowa.
- 12:14Speaker 2: So every I always.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Say, every time I would go back and see a
- 12:17Speaker 3: game at Arrowhead, it was sort of like that Blind
- 12:19Speaker 3: Melon song No Rain, where that bee girl finds the
- 12:23Speaker 3: other beast.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Is that too deep of a cut or no.
- 12:27Speaker 1: I'm sure everybody listening is gonna love your nineteen nineties
- 12:32Speaker 1: blind Melon not song music video reference. Hey guys, hey,
- 12:37Speaker 1: do you remember? It was a lot like when Jamiroquai
- 12:40Speaker 1: got on the moving tarmac and dance right.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Oh man, come on, I'm blind Melon.
- 12:48Speaker 3: That's what it feels like to go to a place
- 12:50Speaker 3: where I'm not alone.
- 12:52Speaker 2: I'm welcome in with my.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Nineteen Chiefs jerseys, whatever one I got on. They just
- 12:57Speaker 3: I just love It's an incredible place and every time
- 13:01Speaker 3: I go there, man, it just reinvigorates me.
- 13:03Speaker 1: See, I thought Derek Thomas was amazing. But growing up,
- 13:06Speaker 1: you know, in the southwest corner of the state, there
- 13:09Speaker 1: were some Chiefs fans down there, so you kind of
- 13:11Speaker 1: paid it. I've always been a Vikings fan, but you
- 13:13Speaker 1: would pay attention to the Chiefs and I The guy
- 13:16Speaker 1: that I was fascinated by was Ages because he was
- 13:19Speaker 1: an absolute beast. But I think, to this day one
- 13:22Speaker 1: of the greatest nicknames in the history of professional sports. Yep,
- 13:26Speaker 1: you hear, you're wearing the shirt Christian Nakoye, the Nigerian Nightmare.
- 13:31Speaker 1: What an all time beast that dude was.
- 13:35Speaker 3: I have an older sibling who's four years older than me,
- 13:37Speaker 3: and he used to beg me to play football with him,
- 13:40Speaker 3: essentially just so he could hit me as hard as
- 13:43Speaker 3: he could down the basement. But one trick he used
- 13:45Speaker 3: to do. He used to convince me to play because
- 13:48Speaker 3: there's an NFL player named Christianakoye who was really good.
- 13:52Speaker 2: He would talk him up.
- 13:53Speaker 3: And my name is Chris, which is close enough to
- 13:57Speaker 3: Christian Nakoye. And that's how you would convince me to play,
- 14:02Speaker 3: and so that Christian Quoy name really sticks with me.
- 14:05Speaker 3: And I've always been a fan of him too, And
- 14:07Speaker 3: that is an awesome nickname too.
- 14:08Speaker 1: It's funny what we as little kids, especially with older
- 14:12Speaker 1: brothers or and I have a similar story with cousins
- 14:15Speaker 1: where you just so desperately want to be included. They
- 14:17Speaker 1: can tell you, like Chris Christian pretty much the same,
- 14:20Speaker 1: don't you think you should play football? And then he
- 14:23Speaker 1: just takes you out back and beats you around a
- 14:25Speaker 1: football field for a while.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:28Speaker 1: My cousin Paul, who I looked up to like crazy,
- 14:33Speaker 1: He and one of his best friends, they were playing
- 14:35Speaker 1: backyard football and they would invite me to come play.
- 14:38Speaker 1: At the time, I had the time of my life.
- 14:41Speaker 1: But they would always say, oh my gosh, you like
- 14:43Speaker 1: you can take a hit. That was the big compliment
- 14:45Speaker 1: is you could take a hit. What I realized later
- 14:49Speaker 1: on in life is I think they were saying that
- 14:52Speaker 1: so they could just keep hitting a kid. Like they
- 14:54Speaker 1: were like, oh man, let's make this kid feel special,
- 14:57Speaker 1: and let's make him feel tough, and then let's just
- 14:59Speaker 1: go out and tackle the shit out of him.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Oh for sure, I remember distinctly falling back and hitting
- 15:04Speaker 3: my head and drawing blood. And I was like, Nick,
- 15:07Speaker 3: I probably we should probably go talk to mom about
- 15:09Speaker 3: the PAS and He's like, no, Christian Akoya would never
- 15:12Speaker 3: come out of a game, Like, you know what, You're right,
- 15:14Speaker 3: he wouldn't come out of game. But I'm seven. Maybe
- 15:18Speaker 3: a seven year old Christian Okoya would come out of
- 15:20Speaker 3: the game.
- 15:21Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Yeah, it's I think in hindsight, like if you know
- 15:24Speaker 1: you have kids, right, you have to send him down
- 15:26Speaker 1: and be like let me, let me tell you how
- 15:27Speaker 1: it works. Yeah, having a name like a guy doesn't
- 15:31Speaker 1: mean you should let somebody way older than you hit
- 15:34Speaker 1: you really hard on a football field.
- 15:36Speaker 3: That's you know, that's older brother mentality. You mentioned the cousins,
- 15:39Speaker 3: that's just what they would do. But it worked because
- 15:43Speaker 3: you know, Derek Thomas, Christian Okoye, when Joe Montana came,
- 15:47Speaker 3: these were all things that just build.
- 15:49Speaker 1: That was That's such That's my favorite maybe in the
- 15:52Speaker 1: history of sports. I love old guy on New team.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Obviously we got that with FARV. We got a really
- 16:00Speaker 1: cool version of that. We almost got the coolest version
- 16:03Speaker 1: of that. Yours was pretty similar because if I recall
- 16:08Speaker 1: Montana went to all the way to the AFC Championship game. Yeah,
- 16:11Speaker 1: he still had a little bit of juice left.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Yeah for sure, and he was nowhere near the same player.
- 16:16Speaker 3: But you could just tell almost like by his smarts alone.
- 16:20Speaker 3: Like he was just such a savvy quarterback. And I
- 16:23Speaker 3: remember that big playoff win against Denver when he drove
- 16:26Speaker 3: us down the field and it was cool to have
- 16:29Speaker 3: him for a little bit and he gave us a
- 16:31Speaker 3: little bit of, like you said, juice. And then from
- 16:34Speaker 3: then on it's been a constant, not as bad as
- 16:37Speaker 3: some other teams, I'm sure, I think of the Cleveland You.
- 16:40Speaker 1: What I will not do on this program is listen
- 16:44Speaker 1: to a man who has Patrick Mahomes as his quarterback,
- 16:48Speaker 1: be like it was so hard for us the years
- 16:51Speaker 1: in between Joe Montana and Patrick Mahomes. Yeah, I'll Jay, Jay,
- 16:57Speaker 1: shut the show down. Jay, I'm done with this. I can't.
- 17:01Speaker 2: We paid our news. We paid our news.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Here's my question, what does it feel like as a
- 17:07Speaker 1: fan to have that? Because it's it is the football
- 17:12Speaker 1: equivalent of winning the Super Bowl. I think, you know,
- 17:15Speaker 1: everybody talks about Tom Brady and Tom Brady's the goat,
- 17:19Speaker 1: but What they don't ever talk about when they're talking
- 17:22Speaker 1: about these players is the salary cap in the salary
- 17:24Speaker 1: cap era, and how smart it was for Brady to
- 17:27Speaker 1: take these, you know, these lower priced deals. The fact
- 17:30Speaker 1: that he has had more top ten defenses in his
- 17:33Speaker 1: career than I think Manning, Rogers, Mahomes, and Drew Brees combined.
- 17:39Speaker 1: You know, he's got the greatest defensive coach of all time.
- 17:41Speaker 1: But there was also money to be spent on players.
- 17:44Speaker 1: So I preface all that. I say all that because
- 17:48Speaker 1: I'm not trying to take anything away from Tom Brady,
- 17:50Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes, He's Michael Jordan. It's it's the greatest thing
- 17:55Speaker 1: I've ever seen. It will continue to be the greatest
- 17:57Speaker 1: thing I've ever seen.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Already already I feel like he's still it's unquestionable.
- 18:02Speaker 1: It's he's because he's got the titles. There's nothing like him.
- 18:06Speaker 1: I don't think they will ever be anything like him.
- 18:09Speaker 1: I don't need to stack it next to other greats
- 18:12Speaker 1: comparatively to put any other quarterbacks down. But what is
- 18:16Speaker 1: it like just to sit there and think, Man, we're
- 18:19Speaker 1: gonna have a guy who plays like this if he
- 18:22Speaker 1: stays healthy for such a it's almost you know that
- 18:26Speaker 1: quote in the office, I'm gonna butcher it. But Ed
- 18:28Speaker 1: Helms in the last episode says like, I wish I'd
- 18:30Speaker 1: have realized that these were the good times when we
- 18:33Speaker 1: were living it something like that. But like you're in
- 18:36Speaker 1: that moment, you are living through one of the greatest
- 18:39Speaker 1: eras in professional sports history because of the guy your
- 18:44Speaker 1: team picked.
- 18:45Speaker 3: You know, there are some teams out there when they
- 18:47Speaker 3: get down, when they're losing, they're gonna lose, like they
- 18:51Speaker 3: can't get down. But with Patrick Mahomes, I honestly truly
- 18:56Speaker 3: feel like during a game, I am never fretting or
- 18:59Speaker 3: wor when we're losing, like never, like the first Super
- 19:04Speaker 3: Bowl they won. With Patrick, every playoff game should have
- 19:08Speaker 3: been a nightmare.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Yeah, that Titans game was tough, every single one of them.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Every game the Texans, we were down twenty one to zero,
- 19:17Speaker 3: I believe in the first quarter, and we ended up
- 19:19Speaker 3: being up at half. And that's because of Patrick Mahomes.
- 19:22Speaker 3: And it's such a nice feeling. Like even this year,
- 19:25Speaker 3: you know, the Jets game was a little iffy, you know,
- 19:27Speaker 3: the Lions, even when I was at the game, I.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Assumed we'd be fine.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Sure, that's just the kind of mentality you have with
- 19:34Speaker 3: Patrick Mahomes.
- 19:35Speaker 2: It's a really cool feeling. It's a really because he's
- 19:38Speaker 2: just a competitor. I mean that's.
- 19:40Speaker 3: Cliche, but I just really think he hates losing. For
- 19:42Speaker 3: as as much as you see about him, and he's
- 19:45Speaker 3: doing all the commercials.
- 19:45Speaker 1: I think it's more. I think it's more about his talent.
- 19:48Speaker 1: But I will I think he I love that. That's
- 19:51Speaker 1: my favorite sports cliche is this guy hates to lose.
- 19:54Speaker 1: You're like, I think he's stronger and faster and more
- 19:57Speaker 1: skilled than the other guys. I don't know a lot
- 19:59Speaker 1: of guys as they were like, you know, I like
- 20:02Speaker 1: the game and I could deal without the losses, I guess,
- 20:06Speaker 1: but I don't know how much they really bother me.
- 20:09Speaker 2: I guess that's a great point.
- 20:10Speaker 3: My other one is, uh, he's got a motor that
- 20:13Speaker 3: he's got a motor.
- 20:14Speaker 1: This guy's got a motor on him.
- 20:16Speaker 2: You know what.
- 20:17Speaker 1: This guy really knows how to work hard. Oh, the
- 20:20Speaker 1: guy in the NFL, with all the other guys in
- 20:22Speaker 1: the NFL. Yeah, I believe that.
- 20:25Speaker 2: I guess that's a great point. Wait, did you call
- 20:26Speaker 2: me out?
- 20:27Speaker 3: I don't think Patrick Mahomes is indifferent to wins losses
- 20:31Speaker 3: out there. But yeah, a good point. But it's just
- 20:35Speaker 3: a nice comforting feeling. Although sometimes he plays a little
- 20:40Speaker 3: aggressive and he gets these little injuries.
- 20:43Speaker 1: You can't, you can't do it. Here's the thing. I
- 20:46Speaker 1: we still have to talk about Taylor Swift, and I
- 20:50Speaker 1: want to talk about you getting on the field. But
- 20:52Speaker 1: what I cannot. I knew I was opening Pandora's box.
- 20:57Speaker 1: No matter what's happening with your team, fans who are
- 21:00Speaker 1: emotionally connected to their team can't help but dissect it.
- 21:05Speaker 1: And I didn't realize and tell you started talking about
- 21:08Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes how much I would hate listening to someone
- 21:12Speaker 1: like well, he's still every once in a while he's
- 21:14Speaker 1: a little aggressive, gets hurt. Dude, shut up, take that
- 21:18Speaker 1: and bury it somewhere in Davenport, Iowa. I can't, I
- 21:23Speaker 1: can't be a part of it.
- 21:24Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Look, you guys can see I got the mustache. I'm
- 21:28Speaker 3: like a young Andy Reid. It's the coaching me and
- 21:31Speaker 3: I just I can't help it. Again when they're winning,
- 21:35Speaker 3: it's my team. So I'm going to offer suggestions. I
- 21:39Speaker 3: was the second team All Conference center when I played
- 21:41Speaker 3: high school, so I know a little bit about the game.
- 21:45Speaker 3: So yeah, I feel like i'm I have every right
- 21:47Speaker 3: to tell Patrick stay in the pocket.
- 21:49Speaker 1: So just to be just to be clear now, because
- 21:52Speaker 1: we're learning about you. Second team All Conference center on offense,
- 21:56Speaker 1: linebacker on defense. Right, these are the two positions you
- 22:00Speaker 1: and you do look like the coach. If somebody this
- 22:03Speaker 1: needs we need to get this show on the internet.
- 22:05Speaker 1: We need to, we need to, we need to step
- 22:07Speaker 1: into the into the modern times because if somebody was like, hey,
- 22:13Speaker 1: check it out over there, that's Andy Reid's nephew, I'd
- 22:16Speaker 1: be like, oh cool, you do have a redish vibe
- 22:20Speaker 1: to you.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:22Speaker 3: I think the only thing we have in common though,
- 22:24Speaker 3: is the love of cheeseburgers, though I don't think that's
- 22:26Speaker 3: like the knowledge. That's where it kind of ends there.
- 22:29Speaker 3: But Andy Reid is another guy that I just have
- 22:32Speaker 3: been so grateful. I think I personally think you can
- 22:36Speaker 3: say something. I think he's underrated. I think people paint
- 22:38Speaker 3: him out to be this goofy cheeseburger eating uh kool
- 22:42Speaker 3: Aid man looking guy. I think he's brilliant and I
- 22:45Speaker 3: think he's on the Mount rushmore of the greatest coaches ever.
- 22:48Speaker 1: I said it, Well, what a way to go out
- 22:51Speaker 1: on the limb there, I uh, the guy with the Super.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Bowl winning I'm gonna put that's a big winning guy.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Here's I loved talking about this sort of stuff. I
- 23:02Speaker 1: think in sports, the confluence of factors to make something
- 23:06Speaker 1: special happen. It's so so so rare. And the Hunt
- 23:12Speaker 1: family is an incredible ownership group. They are they are
- 23:16Speaker 1: an incredible ownership group. And they went out and they
- 23:19Speaker 1: hired they have a fantastic general manager. And they went
- 23:22Speaker 1: out and they hired a Hall of Fame coach, and
- 23:25Speaker 1: then they landed a Hall of Fame quarterback. So when
- 23:28Speaker 1: you have an organization that is behind you know, your
- 23:33Speaker 1: front office and your coach and those positions are elite,
- 23:36Speaker 1: and you look, it just doesn't happen very often. You know,
- 23:39Speaker 1: you've got great owners. In New Orleans, Drew Brees is fantastic.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Sean Payton, you know, despite how Vikings fans feel about him,
- 23:47Speaker 1: is fantastic. Same thing in New England. But that's that's
- 23:50Speaker 1: a rare thing to happen. And even in some other places,
- 23:55Speaker 1: you know, you see him get two out of the
- 23:57Speaker 1: three pieces and it does didn't quite work right. So
- 24:01Speaker 1: I it's a really cool It has to be a
- 24:04Speaker 1: really cool thing to experience.
- 24:08Speaker 3: And I agree with you there because my big pet
- 24:10Speaker 3: peeve is when people tell me, oh, you know, if
- 24:12Speaker 3: the Bears would have drafted Patrick Mahomes, they would have
- 24:15Speaker 3: probably had as much success, or people might say hypothetically.
- 24:19Speaker 1: If there's no chance.
- 24:21Speaker 3: Yeah, And I agree with you because I think, like
- 24:23Speaker 3: you said, there are so many factors that come into play.
- 24:26Speaker 3: I think any Reid was the perfect coach to really
- 24:30Speaker 3: you know, I also think Patrick Mahomes sitting a year
- 24:33Speaker 3: and not, you know, behind Alex Smith, who, in my opinion,
- 24:36Speaker 3: played his played out of his mind all of a sudden,
- 24:39Speaker 3: wasn't like a game manager, was like having a great year.
- 24:42Speaker 3: And I was kind of like, I kind of like
- 24:44Speaker 3: Alex Smith. I liked this new Alex Smith. And then
- 24:48Speaker 3: when Patrick Mahomes you know, had that great phenomenal your mind,
- 24:51Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I wanted him all along.
- 24:52Speaker 1: I promise you. The Chief's Kingdom is littered with people
- 24:57Speaker 1: who are like, you're gonna put him this guy, you
- 25:00Speaker 1: think he's ready. Look at how Alex Smith is playing.
- 25:04Speaker 1: There are a lot of those cold takes out there.
- 25:07Speaker 1: You've gotten to You've gotten to go to a lot
- 25:09Speaker 1: of games. But you know, I'm fortunate working for the team.
- 25:13Speaker 1: I get to get down on the field every once
- 25:14Speaker 1: in a while, and that's a pretty unique and special
- 25:17Speaker 1: experience for someone like me who grew up really following
- 25:22Speaker 1: and loving the team. I know you've gotten down onto
- 25:28Speaker 1: the field a couple times. Legally, yes, legally, this was
- 25:32Speaker 1: very legally, very you have legally been on the field.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Yes, yes, I've seen a lot of Chiefs games. But twice, twice,
- 25:41Speaker 3: for some reason or another, I have been offered the
- 25:44Speaker 3: opportunity to go onto the field and.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Actually do a series like take a couple of no.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Hold the flag, like hold the flag during the national anthem.
- 25:57Speaker 3: The first time I did it was when we play
- 26:00Speaker 3: the Cleveland Browns, and while I was on the field
- 26:02Speaker 3: holding the flag, I was literally I could have high
- 26:05Speaker 3: fived Johnny Manzel, who was warming up next to me
- 26:08Speaker 3: and initially said, this is kind of funny. When I
- 26:12Speaker 3: was first offered this, do you want to hold the flag.
- 26:14Speaker 2: On the field?
- 26:15Speaker 3: I said no, because I thought it was just gonna
- 26:20Speaker 3: be me holding a flag, holding a flag like on
- 26:23Speaker 3: a stick in the middle of the field and waving it.
- 26:27Speaker 3: I didn't know it would be like a group of
- 26:28Speaker 3: like fifty people with a huge flag. That's how sure
- 26:31Speaker 3: ignorant I guess it was. And I just I love
- 26:34Speaker 3: attention side, but not that was just too patriotic, and
- 26:37Speaker 3: I didn't want to like drop the flag or you know,
- 26:39Speaker 3: do something stupid.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it's you don't. Here's the thing that's that's that's
- 26:44Speaker 1: high risk, low reward. You know that holding the flag
- 26:49Speaker 1: on the field, although by yourself, although in extreme honor
- 26:53Speaker 1: you can, it's kind of like being a kicker. If
- 26:56Speaker 1: you hold it right, everybody's like, yeah, that's what should happen.
- 27:00Speaker 1: You gotta hold it right. Yeah, and if you screw
- 27:02Speaker 1: it up, people are gonna have some hard opinions.
- 27:05Speaker 3: It was an incredible experience and it's kind of hilarious too,
- 27:09Speaker 3: because you know, I took as many pictures as I
- 27:11Speaker 3: possibly could, and my wife, I think, resented the fact
- 27:16Speaker 3: at how happy I looked.
- 27:18Speaker 2: She was actually mad because she said I looked.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Too happy in the photos, implying that maybe I didn't
- 27:26Speaker 3: look that happy at other times with her, and I
- 27:28Speaker 3: didn't know how to defend myself.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Sigh, I'm sorry.
- 27:32Speaker 1: Yeah, that's not It's not a good thing when people
- 27:36Speaker 1: who have loved you for a long time are like,
- 27:38Speaker 1: I've never seen you experience joy like that, and I
- 27:43Speaker 1: I'm in a loving relation. We own a home together.
- 27:47Speaker 2: She was like, why are you smiling? And your eyes
- 27:49Speaker 2: are involved. That's how I know it's genuine. Your eyes
- 27:52Speaker 2: are squinting. I'm like, oh my gosh, are you a detective?
- 27:55Speaker 2: Like what is happening?
- 27:56Speaker 3: But it was an incredible experience, and fast forward to
- 27:59Speaker 3: the beginning of this year.
- 28:01Speaker 2: I got offered the same opportunity, and I was more prepared.
- 28:04Speaker 2: I was way more professional. I could have held it
- 28:06Speaker 2: by myself.
- 28:06Speaker 3: Actually sure, I got to hold it for the Detroit
- 28:09Speaker 3: Lions game, which, like you said, an incredible experience, and
- 28:13Speaker 3: the only thing that did go as planned is we
- 28:16Speaker 3: ended up losing the game, which Zach Martinez reminds me of.
- 28:19Speaker 1: So on a consistent basis. Last thing we have to
- 28:24Speaker 1: do it. Let's talk swift y who Here's what I'm
- 28:29Speaker 1: gonna tell you. I'm here. I'm here for the conspiracy theories.
- 28:31Speaker 1: I don't know if you've heard the whole She started
- 28:34Speaker 1: dating him because there's a game coming up against the Jets,
- 28:38Speaker 1: and then because people track her jet and her usage
- 28:42Speaker 1: whenever they google Taylor swift jet, all the stories will
- 28:46Speaker 1: be about her going to a Jets game. I don't
- 28:49Speaker 1: think that's true. I don't buy it, but I love it.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Pour the conspiracy theories on top of me. I think
- 28:57Speaker 1: I don't think she's coming. I don't think she's coming
- 28:59Speaker 1: to Minnesota. I feel like we would know that at
- 29:01Speaker 1: this point. Yeah, but as a as a Chiefs fan,
- 29:06Speaker 1: is this a fun thing or is this a not
- 29:09Speaker 1: fun thing? Or is this an indifferent thing for you?
- 29:13Speaker 3: Well, I will tell you I always defend my Chiefs,
- 29:16Speaker 3: and now I find myself defending not only Taylor Swift's side,
- 29:22Speaker 3: but love.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Like why are we to deny they're both human beings?
- 29:27Speaker 3: I know, I'm not even joking, Like I literally people
- 29:30Speaker 3: are like, oh.
- 29:31Speaker 2: It's a conspiracy.
- 29:32Speaker 3: You know, she's only doing this for publicity, And I'm like, Oh,
- 29:34Speaker 3: they just couldn't have fallen for each other, like that
- 29:37Speaker 3: still exists in this sport.
- 29:38Speaker 2: I'm being dead serious. Side, Can they not love me?
- 29:42Speaker 2: Can they not date?
- 29:43Speaker 3: I just you're getting me worked up because if it
- 29:46Speaker 3: wasn't a chief. Let's say Taylor Swift was dating someone
- 29:50Speaker 3: on the Vikings, I would be in the knee deep
- 29:52Speaker 3: in the.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Conspiracy stuff too.
- 29:53Speaker 3: But because it's Chiefs Kingdom, I believe that they are
- 29:57Speaker 3: in love and they're trying to make it work, which
- 29:59Speaker 3: is because you know, she's so huge, he's so huge.
- 30:03Speaker 3: Everyone wants to know their business. It's gonna be difficult,
- 30:06Speaker 3: but they can make it work. Nodding Hill, Julie Roberts,
- 30:09Speaker 3: there's another for you.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Here's it. I think I think it's the right time
- 30:18Speaker 1: for for this relationship because you know, on the trajectory
- 30:22Speaker 1: that is the Taylor Swift journey. I'm a big swift guy.
- 30:26Speaker 1: I'm not I'm not gonna do I'm not a swift y,
- 30:28Speaker 1: but I'm a big Swift guy. And I think, you know,
- 30:33Speaker 1: with her prominence in the pop music world, because you
- 30:37Speaker 1: gotta remember she started in country, yes, and I think
- 30:40Speaker 1: this is happening at the right time. I think Travis
- 30:43Speaker 1: Kelsey fits into this moment in her career. I don't
- 30:46Speaker 1: think he fits back into country music. Taylor. He's he's
- 30:50Speaker 1: got way too much of a white rapper vibe to
- 30:53Speaker 1: have ever fit in with CMT Taylor Swift. I think
- 30:57Speaker 1: it's a good match that will totally, definitely and absolutely
- 31:02Speaker 1: last past week nine for sure.
- 31:05Speaker 3: And the only reason it won't last is because of
- 31:08Speaker 3: all the other outside people like you, talking conspiracies, and
- 31:13Speaker 3: they're gonna just like, we can't do it.
- 31:14Speaker 2: We can't do it.
- 31:15Speaker 1: It's like Ghostbusters. It's our negative energy that's ruining. It's
- 31:20Speaker 1: not them, it's us, right, it's obviously the haters. Chris.
- 31:26Speaker 1: It means a ton to me that you did this.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Thank you so much for joining the show. We always
- 31:31Speaker 1: end with I make no one likes it, but I
- 31:33Speaker 1: make everybody give a prediction. So I'm gonna ask for
- 31:36Speaker 1: a score prediction from you and then I'll give mine,
- 31:39Speaker 1: and then we'll go.
- 31:40Speaker 3: We'll go our separate ways, Okay, Chiefs Vikings, we'll.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Go twenty eight to twenty one. I'm gonna go Chiefs
- 31:49Speaker 2: twenty eight twenty one.
- 31:50Speaker 3: It'll be close, But like I said with Patrick Mahomes,
- 31:54Speaker 3: we're gonna win.
- 31:55Speaker 2: That's a new slogan.
- 31:56Speaker 1: I think it's gonna be a little bit more. I
- 31:58Speaker 1: think you're gonna see a little bit more of a
- 31:59Speaker 1: defense of presence. Then you might be indicating so I'm
- 32:03Speaker 1: gonna go Chiefs fourteen Vikings one hundred and thirty eight. Chris,
- 32:10Speaker 1: I really appreciate you doing this. Thank you for joining us,
- 32:14Speaker 1: and thank you to Continental Diamond for supporting the show,
