Speaker 1: Chapter twenty nine, Pinocchio returns to the fairy's house, and
• 0:04
Speaker 1: she promises him that on the morrow he will cease
• 0:07
Speaker 1: to be a marionette and become a boy. A wonderful
• 0:11
Speaker 1: party of coffee and milk to celebrate the great event.
• 0:16
Speaker 1: Mindful of what the fisherman had said, Pinocchio knew that
• 0:19
Speaker 1: all hope of being saved had gone. He closed his
• 0:23
Speaker 1: eyes and waited for the final moment. Suddenly, a large dog,
• 0:27
Speaker 1: attracted by the odor of boiling oil, came running into
• 0:31
Speaker 1: the cave. Get out, cried the fisherman, threateningly, and still
• 0:35
Speaker 1: holding on to the marionette, who was all covered with flour.
• 0:39
Speaker 1: But the poor dog was very hungry and whining and
• 0:42
Speaker 1: wagging his tail. He tried to say, give me a
• 0:45
Speaker 1: bite of the fish. I'll go in peace. Get out,
• 0:48
Speaker 1: I say, repeated the fisherman, and he drew back his
• 0:51
Speaker 1: foot to give the dog a kick. Then the dog,
• 0:53
Speaker 1: who being really hungry, would take no refusal, turned in
• 0:57
Speaker 1: a rage toward the fisherman and bared his terrible things.
• 1:01
Speaker 1: At that moment, a pitiful little voice was heard saying,
• 1:04
Speaker 1: save me, Alidoro. If you don't, I'll fry the dog
• 1:08
Speaker 1: immediately recognized Pinocchio's voice. Great was his surprise to find
• 1:13
Speaker 1: that the voice came from the little flower covered bundle
• 1:16
Speaker 1: that the fisherman held in his hand. Then what did
• 1:20
Speaker 1: he do? With one great leap? He grasped that bundle
• 1:23
Speaker 1: in his mouth, and, holding it lightly between his teeth,
• 1:27
Speaker 1: ran through the door and disappeared like a flash. The fisherman,
• 1:31
Speaker 1: angry at seeing his meal snatched from under his nose,
• 1:34
Speaker 1: ran after the dog, but a bad fit of coughing
• 1:37
Speaker 1: made him stop and turn back. Meanwhile, Alidoro, as soon
• 1:41
Speaker 1: as he had found the road which led to the village,
• 1:43
Speaker 1: stopped and dropped Pinocchio softly to the ground. How much
• 1:47
Speaker 1: I do thank you, said the marionette. It's not necessary,
• 1:51
Speaker 1: answered the dog. You save me once, and what is
• 1:54
Speaker 1: given is always returned. We are in this world to
• 1:58
Speaker 1: help one another. But how did you get in that cave?
• 2:02
Speaker 1: I was lying here on the sand, more dead than alive,
• 2:05
Speaker 1: when an appetizing odor of frightfish came to me. That
• 2:09
Speaker 1: odor tickled my hunger, and I followed it. Oh, if
• 2:13
Speaker 1: I had come a moment later, don't speak about it,
• 2:16
Speaker 1: wailed Pinocchio, still trembling with fright don't say a word.
• 2:20
Speaker 1: If you had come a moment later, I would be fried, eaten,
• 2:24
Speaker 1: and digested by this time er I shiver at the
• 2:27
Speaker 1: mere thought of it. Alidoro laughingly held out his paw
• 2:30
Speaker 1: to the marionette, who shook it heartily, feeling that now
• 2:34
Speaker 1: he and the dog were good friends. Then they bid
• 2:36
Speaker 1: each other good bye, and the dog went home. Pinocchio,
• 2:40
Speaker 1: left alone, walked toward a little hut near by, where
• 2:43
Speaker 1: an old man sat at the door, sunning himself, and asked,
• 2:46
Speaker 1: tell me, good man, have you heard anything of a
• 2:49
Speaker 1: poor boy with a wounded head whose name was Eugene.
• 2:52
Speaker 1: The boy was brought to this hut, and now now
• 2:55
Speaker 1: he's dead, Pinocchio interrupted sorrowfully. No, he is now alive,
• 2:59
Speaker 1: and he has already returned home. Really really, cried the marionette,
• 3:03
Speaker 1: jumping around with joy. And the wound was not serious,
• 3:07
Speaker 1: but it might have been even Martle answered the old man.
• 3:11
Speaker 1: Far heavy book was thrown at his head, and who
• 3:14
Speaker 1: threw it? A schoolmate of his, a certain Pinocchio. And
• 3:18
Speaker 1: who is this, Pinocchio asked the marionette, feigning ignorance. They
• 3:23
Speaker 1: say he is a mischief maker, a tramp, a street
• 3:26
Speaker 1: urchin calumnies, all calumnies. Do you know this Pinocchio by sight,
• 3:31
Speaker 1: answered the marionette. And what do you think of him?
• 3:34
Speaker 1: Answered the old man. I think he is a very
• 3:36
Speaker 1: good boy, fond of study, obedient, kind to his father
• 3:40
Speaker 1: and to his whole family. As he was telling all
• 3:43
Speaker 1: these enormous lies about himself, Pinocchio touched his nose and
• 3:47
Speaker 1: found it twice as long as it should be. Scared
• 3:50
Speaker 1: out of his wits, he cried out, don't listen to me,
• 3:52
Speaker 1: good man. All the wonderful things I have said are
• 3:55
Speaker 1: not true at all. I know Pinocchio well, and he
• 3:57
Speaker 1: is indeed a very wicked fellow, zy and disobedient, who,
• 4:01
Speaker 1: instead of going to school, runs away with his playmates
• 4:04
Speaker 1: to have a good time. At this speech, his nose
• 4:07
Speaker 1: returned to its natural size. Why are you so pale,
• 4:11
Speaker 1: asked the old man. Suddenly, let me tell you, without
• 4:15
Speaker 1: knowing it, I've rubbed myself against a newly painted wall.
• 4:18
Speaker 1: He lied, ashamed to say that he had been made
• 4:21
Speaker 1: ready for the frying pan. What have you done with
• 4:23
Speaker 1: your coat and your hat and your breeches? I met
• 4:26
Speaker 1: thieves and they robbed me. Tell me, my good man,
• 4:30
Speaker 1: have you not perhaps a little suit to give me
• 4:32
Speaker 1: so that I may go home, my boy. As for clothes,
• 4:35
Speaker 1: I have only a bag in which I keep hops.
• 4:38
Speaker 1: If you want it, take it there it is. Pinocchio
• 4:42
Speaker 1: did not wait for him to repeat his words. He
• 4:44
Speaker 1: took the bag, which happened to be empty, and after
• 4:47
Speaker 1: cutting a big hole at the top and two at
• 4:49
Speaker 1: the sides, he slipped into it as if it were
• 4:52
Speaker 1: a shirt. Lightly clad as he was, he started out
• 4:55
Speaker 1: toward the village. Along the way, he felt very uneasy.
• 4:59
Speaker 1: In fact, he was so unhappy that he went along,
• 5:02
Speaker 1: taking two steps forward and one back. And as he
• 5:05
Speaker 1: went he said to himself, how shall I ever face
• 5:08
Speaker 1: my good little fairy? What will she say when she
• 5:11
Speaker 1: sees me? Will she forgive this last trick of mine?
• 5:14
Speaker 1: I am sure she won't. Oh no, she won't, and
• 5:16
Speaker 1: I deserve it, as usual, for I am a rascal,
• 5:19
Speaker 1: fine on promises which I never keep. He came to
• 5:23
Speaker 1: the village late at night. It was so dark he
• 5:26
Speaker 1: could see nothing, and it was raining pitchforks. Pinocchio went
• 5:30
Speaker 1: straight to the fairy's house, firmly resolved to knock at
• 5:33
Speaker 1: the door. When he found himself there, he lost courage
• 5:36
Speaker 1: and ran back a few steps. A second time, he
• 5:39
Speaker 1: came to the door, and again he ran back. The
• 5:42
Speaker 1: third time, he repeated his performance the fourth time, before
• 5:46
Speaker 1: he had time to lose his courage. He grasped the
• 5:48
Speaker 1: knocker and made a faint sound with it. He waited,
• 5:52
Speaker 1: and waited and waited. Finally, after a full half hour,
• 5:58
Speaker 1: a top floor window the house had four stories opened
• 6:02
Speaker 1: and Pinocchio saw a large snail look out. A tiny
• 6:06
Speaker 1: light glowed on top of her head. Who knocks at
• 6:09
Speaker 1: this late hour? She called? Is the fairy home? Asked
• 6:13
Speaker 1: the marionette. The fairy is asleep and does not wish
• 6:17
Speaker 1: to be disturbed. Who are you it is? I? Who's
• 6:22
Speaker 1: I Pinocchio? Who is Pinocchio? The marionette, the one who
• 6:27
Speaker 1: lives in the fairy's house? Oh, I understand, said the snail.
• 6:32
Speaker 1: Wait for me there. I will come down to open
• 6:36
Speaker 1: the door for you. Hurry, I beg of you, for
• 6:39
Speaker 1: I am dying of cold, my boy, I am a snail,
• 6:43
Speaker 1: and snails are never in a hurry. An hour passed,
• 6:50
Speaker 1: two hours the door was still closed. Pinocchio, who was
• 6:54
Speaker 1: trembling with fear and shivering from the cold rain, on
• 6:57
Speaker 1: his back knocked a second time, this time louder than before.
• 7:01
Speaker 1: At that second knock, a window on the third floor opened,
• 7:05
Speaker 1: and the same snail looked out. Dear little snail, cried
• 7:09
Speaker 1: Pinocchio from the street. I have been waiting two hours
• 7:11
Speaker 1: for you, and two hours on a dreadful night like
• 7:14
Speaker 1: this are as long as two years. Hurry, please, my boy,
• 7:19
Speaker 1: answered the snail in a calm, peaceful voice. My dear boy,
• 7:24
Speaker 1: I am a snail, and snails are never in a hurry.
• 7:30
Speaker 1: And the window closed. A few minutes later, midnight struck,
• 7:34
Speaker 1: then one o'clock, two o'clock, and the door still remained closed.
• 7:40
Speaker 1: Then Pinocchio, losing all patience, grabbed the knocker with both hands,
• 7:44
Speaker 1: fully determined to wake the whole house in the street
• 7:47
Speaker 1: with it. As soon as he touched the knocker, however,
• 7:50
Speaker 1: it became an eel and wiggled away into the darkness. Really,
• 7:54
Speaker 1: cried Pinocchio, blind with rage. If the knocker is gone,
• 7:57
Speaker 1: I can still use my feet. He stepped back and
• 8:00
Speaker 1: gave the door a most solemn kick. He kicked so
• 8:04
Speaker 1: hard that his foot went straight through the door, and
• 8:07
Speaker 1: his leg followed almost to the knee. No matter how
• 8:10
Speaker 1: he pulled and tugged, he could not pull it out.
• 8:13
Speaker 1: There he stayed as if nailed to the door. Poor Pinocchio.
• 8:18
Speaker 1: The rest of the night he had to spend with
• 8:20
Speaker 1: one foot through the door and the other one in
• 8:23
Speaker 1: the air. As dawn was breaking, the door finally opened.
• 8:27
Speaker 1: That brave little animal, the snail had taken exactly nine
• 8:31
Speaker 1: hours to go from the fourth floor to the street.
• 8:34
Speaker 1: How she must have raced. What are you doing with
• 8:37
Speaker 1: your foot through the door, she asked the marionette, laughing
• 8:41
Speaker 1: it was a misfortune. Won't you try, pretty little snail,
• 8:45
Speaker 1: to free me from this terrible torture. My boy, we
• 8:49
Speaker 1: need a carpenter here, and I have never been one.
• 8:53
Speaker 1: Ask the fairy to help me. The fairy is asleep
• 8:56
Speaker 1: and does not want to be disturbed. But what do
• 8:59
Speaker 1: you want me to do nailed to the door like this?
• 9:02
Speaker 1: Enjoy yourself counting the ants which are passing by. Bring
• 9:07
Speaker 1: me something to eat at least, for I am faint
• 9:09
Speaker 1: with hunger. Immediately, in fact, after three and a half hours,
• 9:14
Speaker 1: Pinocchio saw her return with the silver tray on her head.
• 9:18
Speaker 1: On the tray there were bread, roast, chicken, fruit. Here
• 9:23
Speaker 1: is the breakfast, the fairy sends to you, said the snail.
• 9:27
Speaker 1: At the sight of all these good things, the marionette
• 9:29
Speaker 1: felt much better. What was his disgust? However, when, on
• 9:33
Speaker 1: tasting the food he found the bread to be made
• 9:36
Speaker 1: of chalk, the chicken of cardboard, and the brilliant fruit
• 9:40
Speaker 1: of colored alabaster, he wanted to cry. He wanted to
• 9:43
Speaker 1: give himself up to despair. He wanted to throw away
• 9:46
Speaker 1: the tray and all that was on it. Instead, either
• 9:49
Speaker 1: from pain or weakness, he fell to the floor in
• 9:52
Speaker 1: a dead faint. When he regained his senses, he found
• 9:56
Speaker 1: himself stretched out on a sofa, and the fairy was
• 9:59
Speaker 1: seated near him. This time I forgive you, said the
• 10:03
Speaker 1: fairy to him, but be careful not to get into
• 10:06
Speaker 1: mischief again. Pinocchio promised to study and to behave himself,
• 10:11
Speaker 1: and he kept his word for the remainder of the year.
• 10:15
Speaker 1: At the end of it he passed first in all
• 10:17
Speaker 1: his examinations, and his report was so good that the
• 10:20
Speaker 1: fairy said to him, Happily, tomorrow your wish will come true.
• 10:25
Speaker 1: And what is that Tomorrow you will cease to be
• 10:29
Speaker 1: a marionette and will become a real boy. Pinocchio was
• 10:33
Speaker 1: beside himself with joy. All his friends and schoolmates must
• 10:37
Speaker 1: be invited to celebrate the great event. The fairy promised
• 10:40
Speaker 1: to prepare two hundred cups of coffee and milk, and
• 10:43
Speaker 1: four hundred slices of toast, buttered on both sides. The
• 10:46
Speaker 1: day promised to be a very gay and happy one.
• 10:49
  Speaker 1: But unluckily, in a marionette's life there's always a butt
• 10:55
Speaker 1: which is apt to spoil everything. And of chapter twenty nine,
