[upbeat rock music] Right on. Right on. [laughs] Check it out. Am I supposed to play along to that or?
• 0:17
[laughs] Hey, everybody. Welcome to Full Spectrum Cycling, show number 72. Ah, fine year. Got JK to my right, and sitting- Oh, boy...
• 0:26
sitting in Tony's spot temporarily is, is Jesse Guten, a, a friend of ours who's a guitar player and a musician around Milwaukee here, and saw him at an event last week and said, "Hey, man, you wanna stop by and play a couple tunes?"
• 0:39
So we're- I'm also, I'm also a numerologist, and seven plus two is nine, which is, my birthday is August 9th, and that, I... I'm not a numerologist. Oh. That has no meaning whatsoever, but- That's my anniversary too.
• 0:49
Dude, that sound- dude, nine, nine, 72. Born in one- [laughs]... nine, 18. One of the years, nine. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Nine is my wedding anniversary. I got the nines, baby. I got the nines. It's a good number. Yeah.
• 0:58
Oh, yeah. Nines are good. And you flip all those nines upside down, it's 666, and then- Yeah... if you have the crazy aunt that thinks that way, too- And then there's 69... there. Oh. Exactly. Dude. Best of both worlds.
• 1:09
[laughs] So yeah, so, uh, we, we saw Jesse at a... Did we see you at the garden party? Where'd we see you? Oh, we were just hanging out at Breman. Oh, yeah. Yeah, so- I don't get out much these days...
• 1:19
right down the street. What, with the COVID and all? Yeah. It's been rough.
• 1:23
I was just telling the boys here that, I'll just admit this, I've been kind of down and out, uh, you know, with less work, uh, haven't been playing, playing shows.
• 1:31
And I actually sought, you know, c- some consultation from a therapist and all along I'm talking to Lee, setting up the appointment, thinking that I'm gonna meet this guy. It turns out to be a virtual doctor visit.
• 1:44
And- With, with someone you hadn't met yet, right? Yeah, I hadn't- Yeah, so- It's not like my primary doctor that I've known for five years, so I have to meet this guy. It's so awkward.
• 1:51
Like, no, I kind of had to like download this whole app and everything, you know, and he's like, "What's bringing you down?" I'm like, "Well, this." [laughs] You know what I mean? Right.
• 1:58
Like, this is what's bringing me down, is that.
• 2:00
So it's really nice to sit around, actually talk with some real people, [sniffs] you know, and then use the, uh, use the World Wide Web and the digital world to get it out there. But- Right on.
• 2:13
So that's what we're doing today. Tony's, Tony's sitting in the peanut gallery being very quiet, so, so we can [laughs] so we can free up a mic input for him to talk on.
• 2:22
That, that's his n- that's his, that's his nodding. Yeah. Can you hear it? [laughs] See, when we do this, when we get the live stream going you can see him nodding. [laughs] We'll do it. We are. We are.
• 2:31
So, uh, Jesse's been playing for a long time. His dad's been playing for a long time in various Milwaukee bands, and, uh, you wanna talk about anything before you do a couple- Yeah... numbers or what, what do you got?
• 2:42
Besides the, uh, the virtual therapist- [clears throat]... you know. Yeah. Yeah, it's- What, what have you been doing-... it's, it's depressing... during these trying times?
• 2:48
Um, well, I think that everyone's kind of working a lot of this stuff out in their own way. At the same time, we're all taking measures. Some are very important. Others seem kind of ridiculous.
• 3:01
[laughs] But, um, everyone's kind of figuring out the new... There's a cultural shift happening. So, you know, I've... There's a few songs that I've written or developed in that time.
• 3:10
I mean, I, you know, I haven't been working quite as much, but I've just been spending time at home, and, um, doing some gardening. [sniffs] You know, not a whole lot.
• 3:19
I mean, the bars, what, just opened back up, and then the second wave, you know. I- Right... I'm kind of, I'm not a germophobe by any measure, but, like... So I've been sitting at home kind of thinking about,
• 3:30
uh, you know, economics and social, cultural changes. [sniffs] Uh, there's a song that I wrote that's actually called Scar City, but there's kind of a funny story behind it.
• 3:40
Uh, so back when school classes had actual, like, teachers in front of you- [laughs]... who, like, you know, lectured and when you...
• 3:49
So I had a, a, an economics professor, and he taught most of his cl- classes in Spanish. So he was teaching, uh, us about the economic concept of scarcity, but he pronounced it scarcity. [laughs] But Scar City.
• 4:03
So I was like, "What a great play on words." So this is... I'll play a song. It's called Scar City. Right on.
• 4:08
[clears throat] [singing] Unlimited wants and needs.
• 4:30
But not enough to go around. And what I see in my city. Invisible scars that never seem to fade
• 4:48
  away. Yeah.
• 4:52
[singing] And that corner there, well, it's cursed.
• 5:17
Every shop sets up, it starts to fall apart. These walls still stand just like a hearse. The body never made it to the ground.
• 5:33
  To fade away. Yeah.
• 5:39
[singing] I'm just like you. Soon we'll see.
• 5:56
But I'm not like you. What you- I'm just like you. I'm not like you. Yeah.
• 6:10
  [singing] Unlimited wants and needs,
• 6:55
but not enough to go around. Right on. Man, that's a nice groove there. [laughs] And it's kind of about like... That's why, you know, it's really nice to see, uh, this, this shop still standing, you know?
• 7:12
[laughs] That's 'cause, I, uh, suddenly thinking about it- Well-... 'cause there's j- Yeah... I've just seen so many small businesses go under and, you know, thank God you're still here- Well-...
• 7:20
and we can do stuff like this... y- I had a real job for a while that made me some money, so I could kind of keep this going, and got a wife and, you know, she's supportive.
• 7:28
And it, it, when, when we had the place boarded up for six weeks, I was feeling like, "Man, is this thing gonna keep moving?" Right.
• 7:34
Because we had some issues with people, you know, smashing windows next door and whatnot. Really? Oh.
• 7:39
And just as a preventative thing, I, we, we put everybody on this block basically boarded their, their businesses up and it, it just looks like you're closed, and that's [laughs]... Right.
• 7:49
No, it really did, and I've noticed that all around town, and I didn't exactly... You're not sure exactly. Yeah. Even if it does say, "We're open, open, open, open." Right.
• 7:55
[laughs] Yeah, with, with- It's like, how badly do I want to- With the bed sheet and all that... yeah. So- I assure you, yeah, a total clerks move... but really since March 17th, we've been working by appointment only.
• 8:05
I don't let people in the door that don't have an appointment.
• 8:08
I'm not having people in here just browsing and looking around because, you know, it's just things are uncertain and it just, it, it- But thankfully, you know what?
• 8:16
Bicycle, and I was just saying, I have a bicycle and it, it actually needs some work. It's an old Schwinn.
• 8:23
And it was great, it was getting me around for a while, but it, uh, I don't know, it just, the, the gear's locked up. So I should bring it in here. Bring it in. But it's an, it's an es- We'll consider speed now.
• 8:31
Yeah, right. [laughs] No, it doesn't, not even- [laughs] But- Great... I know, I know that it could be fixed, but it's, it's an essential thing because, you know, like, with, I mean, cars, I...
• 8:41
You see people driving around wearing masks in their own car, like, by themselves. That's just ridiculous. [laughs] That's not even the point, but it's like, you know, they're not getting exercise.
• 8:49
Like, bicycling is still a way that's a safe, socially distant, but, um, you know, effective way to get exercise and to travel from A to B. Yeah. So I think- And get your ass out of the house, apart from- Yeah...
• 8:59
walking to your car. Yeah, we've been, we've been doing some social distance riding here and there. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Right. I'd go damn stir crazy. Yeah, for sure. You're gonna have to teach me how to ride, though.
• 9:10
I, I do a terrible... One time I was wor- I actually used to bike... I actually did used to do bike delivery for Cousin's Subs. Oh, right on.
• 9:19
[laughs] And this one time this, this guy called me and was yelling about something. I for- I forget what it is, it was a long time ago. But like an idiot...
• 9:29
And I, I was trying to get back and, like, I'm on the phone and I go like this, switch hands, and I grab the left handle [laughs] with my right hand. Oh. And I just hit the pavement with all those subs- [laughs]...
• 9:42
right on Humboldt. Oh, I could have died. Oh, shit. Yeah, I'd, I- [laughs] I could see how that would be challenging to ride opposite handed. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. I don't know what I was thinking.
• 9:51
Getting on it, I thought of it like, "That's impossible." Oh, shit. It's also [bell ringing] top of the hill, folks. Well, then. Uh, JK is gonna run and get another beer, I guess. Oh.
• 10:02
Tony brought, Tony brought our, uh, our first show beer today. It's New Belgium's Voodoo Ranger American Haze, [upbeat music] which is, I, you know, it's r- actually really tasty. At only 5%.
• 10:15
Only 5% of your alcohoozy, so you can session the shit out of this stuff. I'm digging it. Is, is Voodoo Ranger, like, a New Belgium? Is it, like, a new... Is it gonna spin off into its own brand? It's like a sub.
• 10:27
There's so many different Voodoo Rangers now, but- Man... they all come from the New Belgium there in the, in the Fort Collins, hey. You know. Or wherever else they are.
• 10:35
But I don't think I've had a Voodoo Ranger that I don't like. Well- I do like that this one is not gonna kick my ass immediately, though.
• 10:41
It, it beats the Rolling Rock I had, but then we, we were talking about, earlier, about how Rolling Rock is a pretty dang good beer for the buck. It's not bad. That was a go-to for me for a long time in the past. Mm-hmm.
• 10:53
Wow, you got all kind of beer there now. [laughs] In a torrent storm- JK comes bearing gifts... well, if there is need, there's the backup.
• 11:01
I got one more song for you guys before, uh, you move on with what you had planned or- Right on... with what you didn't have planned. But, uh, this one's kind of a totally different change of pace.
• 11:10
Um, it's one of my oldest songs and it's about ano- another thing that we were talking about, but that is kind of a thing [laughs] of the past for now. Hopefully, it's about traveling, you know?
• 11:19
[upbeat music] Can't wait till I can see another part of the country or, God forbid, a different country again. Right. [laughs] I don't know if your mic cut out there. Oh, yeah. Oh, I was- There you go...
• 11:31
I was just muting him so he doesn't breathe- [laughs]... into the microphone while you're playing. [laughs] All right, this one's called Mississippi Twister.
• 11:38
[upbeat music] Well, I could unwind a Mississippi twister.
• 11:59
Said I could stop a hurricane in its tracks. And I don't need no God now signs to follow. And I'm on my own. I ain't ever gonna come back.
• 12:21
You know I got my share of trouble. And my past, it follows close behind. Yeah-yeah, yeah.
• 12:35
No matter what they say, well, I'll always find a way on my own. But I'm running out of time.
• 12:47
[singing] You know I got my share of trouble.
• 13:23
My past, it follows close behind. No matter what they say, well, I'll always find a way on my own. But I'm running out of time.
• 13:51
Said, I seen a man fly off the handle. But that ain't nothing compared with what I done.
• 14:05
Said, I can't count the times that I've been mistreated. But I ride right down this road into the setting sun now, yeah. You know I got my share of trouble.
• 14:26
My past, it follows close behind. Yeah-yeah, yeah, yeah. No matter what they say, I always find a way o- on my own.
• 14:44
But I'm running out of time. Right on. [clapping] Bam. Nice, man.
• 15:01
A little vibrato. Right. [laughs] So, uh, do you have, like, a band camp or any kind of online presence? I do.
• 15:09
I have, you know, like I say, the social media game has never been my favorite thing to play, but I've gotten on there, and, uh, a lot of it's listed under Suntantrik. That's, so that's actually
• 15:21
spelled like suntan trick, with a K at the end, uh, Suntantrik. You can find me under that. That's where a lot of my professional recording's been done.
• 15:31
A lot of my home recordings, some of which I think are pretty professional [laughs] are under my name, and that's Jesse Guten, J-E-S-S-E G-U-T-E-N.
• 15:40
So Suntantrik is kind of like my project where I find musicians that wanna learn the songs I've written, the ones that I'm willing to play with, that are appropriate to play with a band. Mm.
• 15:50
And then you can find me as a solo singer-songwriter, where I do, um, I do some stuff like R&B tunes where I actually do all the tracks myself, and, uh- Right on... gotta get back on my game.
• 16:01
Maybe you can help with your seeming- Yeah [laughs]... how much you're doing, so. [laughs] Yeah.
• 16:05
Well, doing a podcast is a little different than recording a live or even, you know, studio kind of a music thing, but certainly we can figure something out. We- we're- It gives me perspective, though. Yeah. Right on.
• 16:16
Well, we appreciate you stopping by. Um- Thank you... definitely welcome you back some other time when you're, you know, feeling like popping in and need a little human interaction and... [laughs] Absolutely. Yeah.
• 16:28
Yeah, next Wednesday it's gonna be. [laughs] Come out too soon. Well, thanks for having me, and I'm gonna enjoy the rest of this Voodoo Ranger and listen to you guys bullshit all day, so. Yeah. Right on, man.
• 16:36
[laughs] All right, take care, guys. Thanks, Jesse. Right on. Hey, while, uh, while Tony gets in g- in, in position and puts his face on- Costume... and whatnot, he's, I think he's in makeup right now, uh...
• 16:47
[laughs] Let's, let's take a call. Uh, welcome to the radio program, caller. Who do we have on the line? It's my birthday. Oh, no kidding. [laughs] Happy birthday, Big Sexy.
• 17:03
[laughs] We'll turn, we'll, we'll turn Tony on. Yeah. There he is. I, I turn 43 in Missouri. Nice. Where are y- Well, how old are you in other states? Well, um, I, I, I was 42 in, uh, Canton, Ohio last year.
• 17:21
Nice. Yeah, you know, and I just spent a couple days with my uncle in Kansas City, and, uh, now I'm on my way to Jefferson City. I'm o- I'm about halfway there.
• 17:33
There's a really cool, uh, uh, rail, uh, uh, what do you call it? Rail trail. I'm gonna go grab that. Um, but they, they call it the Rock Island Spur. Right on. Cool. It's, it's the Rock Island Spur.
• 17:49
It, it, it goes really, it goes from Kansas City all the way to St. Louis, and it goes right through Jefferson City. It's a nice smooth little bike path, and oh, my God, I am in love.
• 17:59
I've had the won- most wonderful birthday of my life. I've been just drinking beers all day long and just cruising. Nice. Nice. Happy birthday, brother. Happy birthday. Happy birthday, Big Sexy.
• 18:09
We got kind of a weird- Well, thank you so much... we got kind of a... Big Sexy, we got kind of a weird, um, uh- Static... phone connection for some reason Um, do you wanna- Hello... do you wanna just, uh- Call back...
• 18:20
hang up and call back and see if we get a better, um, a better connection? Sure, yeah, the same thing happened with my mom earlier. You know, she was doing all the work 43 years ago, so- [laughs] Yeah.
• 18:35
Uh, I'll, I'll, I'll hang up and call right back. Right. All right. Okay. We'll talk to you in a few minutes. All right. Bye. See ya. Wel- welcome to the radio program, Tony. Hey, thanks for having me.
• 18:49
Folks, Jesse Guten is really a, a, a kind of a one-of-a-kind dude. I've seen him play with other bands. Dude, he's freaking fantastic. [laughs] So he, he normally plays guitar and he's kind of the- Yeah...
• 18:58
kind of the lead guy, but in a, in a, in a band where he's kinda taking a backseat and maybe picking up a bass, and maybe a left-handed bass, and playing it upside down, he can do that.
• 19:08
[laughs] It's, it's just, it's, it... He's insanely talented. Um, and, and so is his old man, which I th- I think his dad's in some of the Sun Tantric stuff, too. Oh, nice. I think so.
• 19:18
Um, and they played at Summerfest a bunch, and, you know, they're sorta staples around the area and, and in other cities as well.
• 19:26
And hopefully we can have him back because, uh, I enjoy music from Cripes- Yeah, definitely have him back... and, uh- Yeah... that music thing is good, you know?
• 19:32
And, and keep- If there's any other musicians that wanna do a rotating Wednesday, come on in. Right. Yeah, certainly not me. I can barely- Oh, yeah...
• 19:39
whistle my way out of a paper bag, but- Let, let's talk bike a little bit. Did you get the invitation for the next Black is Beautiful ride? No. Oh. You should tell us when that is. Oh. Let me, I believe it's August 16th.
• 19:50
Let me check my smartphone, which makes me dumb. [laughs] Um- I think there's a caller on the line. [gasps] Oh, who called us back? [laughs] Big Sexy. Dude, pushing buttons over here.
• 20:09
That. There he is. There he is. That's way better. Yeah. That's way better, dude. I don't know what was going on. Is it way better? Oh, yeah, definitely. Oh, night and day. Night and day.
• 20:16
Now it sounds like you're in the room next to us pretty much. Uh, like, like the, like the same thing happened to my mom. I had to, I had to hang up and call her back. She's like, "I can't hear you."
• 20:25
I'm like, "Oh, God damn it." [laughs] Anyway. Don't swear in front of your mom. No, but I, I... Mom? Don't swear in front of your mom. Well, oh, m- uh, we, we got way past that when I turned- [laughs]...
• 20:38
like, uh, 21 or something. Just giving you shit, dude. Right. No, no, but like we, we used to have a rule that you, you could only swear in front of Grandpa. Nice. Did you have to put a quarter in a jar?
• 20:51
If, if, if Grandpa... Yeah, well, if Grandpa was around you could swear all you wanted, but in, but if Grandpa wasn't around you couldn't swear. Gotcha. Rules families have- Yeah... 101 with Big Sexy.
• 21:03
Well, I, yeah, I'll, I'll tell you what, though. I, I really wanna tell you guys about this bike path, and it's called the Rock Island Spur, and it goes from Kansas City to St. Louis,
• 21:15
and, uh, and, and it's, it's wonderful. And there's like a bunch of nice little towns along the way. And, you know, there's some, there is some small penis trucks that you gotta deal with. [laughs] Yeah.
• 21:28
I heard one go by. Brr. Yeah, did, did anybody, did anybody see my post about the small penis truck? Uh, don't... Was it on, uh, the Book Face? Uh, yeah, yeah. I have not seen it yet.
• 21:42
  What, you- I, I don't know, I don't know what's with Facebook. Okay, so, so- Sometimes I see stuff, sometimes I don't.
• 21:45
Yeah, it's like- And it's like you just- Well, well, my, my definition of a, of a small penis truck is like a, a, a big-ass loud truck with big-ass tires that are way too big.
• 21:58
They, they don't, they don't need 'em that big. But this guy, this guy had on, on his windshield, ab- on the very top of the windshield it said in big huge letters, it said, "Sorry about your neck."
• 22:12
Meaning that you whipped it around so fast- Me, meaning-... you got whiplash or what? [laughs] Yeah, that, "Oh, oh my God, look at that beautiful truck." And I was like, I, uh, uh, but, uh, it was the exact opposite.
• 22:23
I was like, "That truck's about to make me puke." [laughs] Was this in Missouri? No, it was in Iowa, actually. Oh. Was it a dually? Yeah, I was, I was amongst- A dually... the Iowegians for a little more than a week. Oh.
• 22:41
And you survived. I like Iowa. And I'll tell you one thing. I, I'll tell you, I'll tell you one thing about Iowa, they got way too much gravel in that state. Oh, gravel's great. We love gravel. Oh, dude, I...
• 22:55
No, come on now. Heather loves gravel. I hate gravel. [laughs] I've ridden across that state- And, uh-... several times, Big Sexy. I've done RAGBRAI a bunch of times. Matter of fact- Right...
• 23:08
I just, I just found some old- They, they got-...
• 23:09
photos of, of, uh, RAGBRAI today, and I'm gonna maybe for the next couple of weeks, since RAGBRAI just ended, if it would've happened, which it didn't, post a few pictures from the '90s- Mm... RAGBRAI rides we did.
• 23:22
Continue, Big Sexy. The- I took away your thunder. Thunder. No, no, it's, uh, I, I ain't worried about that. [laughs] Um, but, um, they, they do have, they, they have a thing called level B roads.
• 23:36
Oh, those are different than gravel. And, and they- Those are unmaintained... and there, there's a- [laughs]...
• 23:40
there's a big, um, ye- yellow diamond sign that says, "Warning, you're about to enter a level B road," like very low maintenance road. Sounds like a blast. And I'm like...
• 23:51
And of course, Google Maps is saying, "Go right through here. It's all good." I'm like, "No." [laughs] Not unless you have one of those small penis trucks. Then it, then it makes easy- Yeah... easy business of that shit.
• 24:05
[laughs] Well, I, ooh, but I've, I've got a large penis tricycle, so. Excellent. [laughs] So where, where are you headed next? That's a band name. Where are you headed next?
• 24:17
Well, um, Jefferson City, um, is right on the way, and, uh, I'm gonna go through St. Louis. I got a friend in St. Louis that's itching to see me, and, uh- Nice Then I'm gonna go from St. Louis to Indianapolis,
• 24:32
  and then, um, I might have to go back up t- uh, go back up, well, go up to Michigan and see a couple friends up at Michigan, and then I'm going to Charleston, West Virginia;
• 24:41
Frankfort, Kentucky; Nashville, Tennessee; Montgomery, Alabama; Jackson, Mississippi; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and then New Orleans. And then I'm gonna- Jesus, man...
• 24:51
I'm gonna hide like a pussy in New Orleans for the winter. Right on. That sounds like a great idea. Yeah, man. All right, well- Hey, uh, I'll tell you what,
• 25:00
pe- people are like, "Oh, so you, you spend your, your summers up here and your winters down there? You're a goddamn genius." I'm like, "You damn straight I am." Some people might call you a snowbird. Yeah.
• 25:10
[laughs] Well, but, y- you know, I'm, I'm not, you know, I'm, I'm not saying I have to be in New Orleans, but I'm definitely gonna be m- below the Mason-Dixon line for winter. Sure. I won't. Yeah, no- But-...
• 25:25
we're kinda gonna be stuck up here for this winter, I think Yeah, I, I'm okay with that. Well- But that's all right... and Heather- I understand... Heather is ride- Heather's riding like a dream. Um, I think this, the...
• 25:35
When, when my axle broke in, uh, Keokuk, Iowa- Axle... that new, that new frame they sent me had an extra nut on it, and I think it's working because I haven't broken a spoke yet.
• 25:48
Knockin', knock- Knockin' on wood for you, brother... I, I just, yeah, just beat my head with my hand, knocking on wood. Yeah. Well, good luck. Yeah, um, uh- [laughs]
• 25:56
Ba- bash your, bash your head in, bash your head into a refrigerator and it might work. [laughs] There we go. All right, brother. Well- But, man, she- Happy birthday, Big Sexy...
• 26:05
she runs like a dream and, and it was good to hear, hear and talk to you guys. And, uh, you know, um, I'll, I'll, I'll call back in a week or two and, uh, and check in with you. Wonderful. Right on.
• 26:17
Always look forward to it. Thanks, man. Happy birthday, brother. > [laughs] Yeah, I just said it creepy. All right, man. Y'all take it easy. Thank you so much. All right. Bye, Big Sexy.
• 26:28
