- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Tuesday.
- 0:14It is the 17th of September and it is a new day.
- 0:19Not sure what you are up to today, but whatever it is, I
- 0:22hope that you have a day filled with the opportunities for you
- 0:26to get to make a difference. Because that's what life's all
- 0:28about, isn't it? It's a nice thing to lie in the
- 0:31sunshine and relax, but ultimately you just, you just
- 0:34can't do that all the time, right?
- 0:35You just feel like, oh, I've got to get up and do something.
- 0:38The thing that makes us feel most rewarded is when we get to
- 0:42do something of value for others or our community.
- 0:45So that is my wish for you today, that you can do something
- 0:48with some meaning and some purpose for your community.
- 0:52And that is what we are going to hear Paul talking about as he is
- 0:56doing his best to encourage this community.
- 0:59But people are still questioning who he is and why he's doing it
- 1:04and if he has any right to speak into their lives the way he
- 1:08does. So today he writes that it's
- 1:10actually not about him, it's about God.
- 1:13So join me friends, as we settle in and hear these words from
- 1:16Paul reading together Second Corinthians chapter 10.
- 1:30Now I, Paul, appeal to you with the gentleness and kindness of
- 1:35Christ, though I realise you think I am timid in person and
- 1:40bold only when I write from far away.
- 1:43Well, I'm begging you now so that when I come I won't have to
- 1:48be bold with those who think we act from human motives.
- 1:52We are human, but we don't wage war as humans do.
- 1:56We use God's mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down
- 2:01the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false
- 2:05arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle
- 2:09that keeps people from knowing God.
- 2:11We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey
- 2:15Christ. And after you have become fully
- 2:18obedient, we will punish everyone who remains
- 2:21disobedient. Look at the obvious facts.
- 2:25Those who say they belong to Christ must recognise that we
- 2:29belong to Christ as much as they do.
- 2:32I may seem to be boasting too much about the authority given
- 2:35to us by the Lord, but our authority builds you up.
- 2:39He doesn't tear you down. So I will not be ashamed of
- 2:43using my authority. I'm not trying to frighten you
- 2:46by my letters, for some say Paul's letters are demanding and
- 2:51forceful, but in person he is weak and his speeches are
- 2:55worthless. Those people should realise that
- 2:59our actions when we arrive in person will be as forceful as
- 3:03what we say in our letters from far away.
- 3:06Oh, don't worry, we wouldn't dare say that we are as
- 3:10wonderful as these other men who tell you how important they are,
- 3:14but they are only comparing themselves with each other,
- 3:17using themselves as the standard of measurement.
- 3:20How ignorant. We will not boast about things
- 3:25done outside our area of authority.
- 3:28We will boast only about what has happened within the
- 3:31boundaries of the work God has given us, which includes our
- 3:35working with you. We are not reaching beyond these
- 3:39boundaries when we claim authority over you as if we had
- 3:42never visited you, for we were the first to travel all the way
- 3:46to Corinth with the good news of Christ.
- 3:50Nor do we boast and claim credit for the work someone else has
- 3:53done. Instead, we hope that your faith
- 3:56will grow so that the boundaries of our work among you will be
- 4:00extended. Then we will be able to go and
- 4:03preach the good news in other places, far beyond you, where no
- 4:08one else is working. Then there will be no question
- 4:11of our boasting about work done in someone else's territory.
- 4:16As the Scriptures say, if you want to boast, boast only about
- 4:20the Lord. When people commend themselves,
- 4:24it doesn't count for much. The important thing is for the
- 4:28Lord to commend them. Our Lord Jesus, thank you that
- 4:42you would choose to be active in our world, not just chilling on
- 4:47your divine couch, streaming, whatever it is that could
- 4:51entertain God. But no, you choose to be active,
- 4:55coming here and spreading your good news of love and
- 5:00forgiveness in the world. Thank You that you give us that
- 5:04ability and that responsibility to let people know about how
- 5:08good you are to us, to them, to all of us.
- 5:14And Lord, I pray that you would inspire us to do that.
- 5:17And as we do that, and as we see success in sharing your love,
- 5:21that we would point all of the glory back to you and any
- 5:26ministry that we may be involved in when things go well.
- 5:29All praise to you, our loving, kind and saving God, in whose
- 5:35name we pray today. I'm in.
