Transcript
- 0:24Speaker 1: Hey there, Anthony from Haraway.
- 0:26Speaker 2: We've just released our new single NAS Society out on
- 0:28Speaker 2: all streaming platforms, and we're here today with Chris to
- 0:34Speaker 2: talk things Haraway, touring and everything in between.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Fantastic Anthony, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Brother, Thank you, thank you for having me my pleasure.
- 0:43Speaker 4: So, as you say, Harroway recently released a new single,
- 0:46Speaker 4: NAS Society.
- 0:47Speaker 3: So how's the only reception been.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Yeah, it's been really good.
- 0:51Speaker 2: It's it's been a bit of a different sound for
- 0:53Speaker 2: us with having the new singer come in with a
- 0:56Speaker 2: little bit of higher register, a little bit more melodic
- 0:58Speaker 2: for us as well.
- 0:59Speaker 1: So far it's been really good.
- 1:00Speaker 2: We've got some really good feedback from fans, friends, family,
- 1:04Speaker 2: and it seems to be going off with the shows too,
- 1:06Speaker 2: people who are really enjoying Chris's voice for sure.
- 1:09Speaker 3: So we'll get into that side of things a little
- 1:11Speaker 3: bit later.
- 1:11Speaker 4: But but now I can tell us a bit more
- 1:13Speaker 4: about NA Society musically and what you're actually done for this.
- 1:16Speaker 1: One in terms of the themes of the song, or
- 1:19Speaker 1: in terms.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Of I both read the musical side of but I
- 1:21Speaker 4: guess we'll talk about the themes next.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Okay, So the musical side.
- 1:25Speaker 2: I mean it's pretty much our tried and true sort
- 1:27Speaker 2: of formula of like heavy heavy stuff low tuned into droppy.
- 1:31Speaker 2: I don't think in this one we go into our
- 1:33Speaker 2: double drop D that's that's in another song coming, But no, it's.
- 1:37Speaker 1: It's really just there.
- 1:39Speaker 2: We're trying to showcase CJ's voice as much as we can,
- 1:42Speaker 2: whilst also making it truly harrowy, which is something that
- 1:46Speaker 2: we've you know, really come to enjoy the breakdowns as
- 1:49Speaker 2: soon as they hit, both in your ears when it
- 1:52Speaker 2: comes to the recording as well as live. It translates
- 1:54Speaker 2: really well. And we've also noticed that the more melodical
- 1:57Speaker 2: things we can get into it is, the more more
- 2:00Speaker 2: that people really start to enjoy listening back to it
- 2:03Speaker 2: and breaking it up a little bit and giving us
- 2:05Speaker 2: more feedback on it too.
- 2:06Speaker 1: So yeah, when it comes.
- 2:07Speaker 2: To that, it's that's pretty much it is tried and
- 2:10Speaker 2: true formula, and we're just mixing up a little bit
- 2:12Speaker 2: sonically with what we can do.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Nice, nice now, But Sign is actually a play on
- 2:17Speaker 4: words using narcissism and society mixed together. So run us
- 2:20Speaker 4: through the thought process behind the song and it's relevant
- 2:23Speaker 4: in today's society.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Oh man, it just comes from like the continual sort
- 2:27Speaker 2: of like like prison that people are currently experiencing with
- 2:31Speaker 2: like current social media, the instant gratification of things like
- 2:34Speaker 2: evaluating your.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Worth effectively with the numbers on the screen.
- 2:38Speaker 2: I'm not talking money, I'm talking likes and talking comments,
- 2:40Speaker 2: shares all the rest of it. Where you know, I've
- 2:43Speaker 2: seen a lot of friends get hung up on these
- 2:44Speaker 2: things where they didn't get like twenty likes in the
- 2:47Speaker 2: first ten minutes, so they've deleted the whole thing. I'm like,
- 2:49Speaker 2: weren't you really meant to be sharing this because it
- 2:52Speaker 2: was something cool that you thought of, What do you
- 2:53Speaker 2: care what other people think?
- 2:55Speaker 1: But yeah, it's there's a lot to do with that.
- 2:57Speaker 2: And there's also a reference to vaping in there, which
- 3:00Speaker 2: like personally, I was like not super like happy with
- 3:04Speaker 2: when like a couple of my friends got onto it
- 3:06Speaker 2: because they're like officely he's onto that.
- 3:07Speaker 1: So there's a few references to what I'm.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Witnessing and what a lot of the people in the
- 3:12Speaker 2: band are witnessing happening in today's society. And it's a
- 3:14Speaker 2: little bit bit air to say about society because it
- 3:18Speaker 2: makes you sound kind of like the Joker, but it
- 3:19Speaker 2: really is just a bit of a commentary on like
- 3:21Speaker 2: what we're seeing unfold and what we're not really enjoying about,
- 3:25Speaker 2: like the darker side of social media and how it's
- 3:28Speaker 2: affecting a lot of people at the moment.
- 3:31Speaker 4: It's good that someone's addressing that too, because those points
- 3:33Speaker 4: you made are or valid too. But these days, someone
- 3:35Speaker 4: writes something on Facebook and it's fact gospel straight away,
- 3:39Speaker 4: Like you can say whatever you want about someone in
- 3:42Speaker 4: the moment that person responds to it, they're the attacker,
- 3:45Speaker 4: and it's like, I'm just responding to what you saying.
- 3:47Speaker 3: They Christie help. I've experienced that myself recently.
- 3:49Speaker 4: It's it's a dangerous thing and if you look to
- 3:51Speaker 4: get to you too much, it cann't affect your mental health.
- 3:54Speaker 3: It could go a lot further.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Absolutely, and it's kind of damned if you do. Damned
- 3:58Speaker 2: if you don't too, because if somebody is spreading absolute
- 4:00Speaker 2: nonsense about you, you can take the choice of I'm
- 4:02Speaker 2: just gonna let it be because it's nonsense, or you
- 4:04Speaker 2: can address it, and either way somebody is going to
- 4:07Speaker 2: create a narrative and it's like, oh, they responded, They
- 4:10Speaker 2: must have done something or they didn't respond.
- 4:12Speaker 1: We're just going to keep reinforcing a narrative.
- 4:14Speaker 3: You know.
- 4:15Speaker 4: I had someone recently say that they'd seen me leading
- 4:18Speaker 4: an anti lockdown Nazi rally in Melbourne bribe for a start,
- 4:26Speaker 4: but like people would just comment under it as if
- 4:28Speaker 4: it had happened and they'd actually seen it themselves. It's
- 4:31Speaker 4: like you say, you get on there and you say
- 4:32Speaker 4: something about it, and why is he defending himself? And
- 4:34Speaker 4: if you don't say something about it, why isn't he
- 4:36Speaker 4: defended himself.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Damned if you do, Damned if you don't.
- 4:39Speaker 2: It kind of is yeah, and I know the if
- 4:41Speaker 2: you're talking about the one that happened to the shopping
- 4:43Speaker 2: center Northland, Yeah, that that that shopping cent is going
- 4:46Speaker 2: through a lot of the moment with all those Nazi.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Like protests and stuff like that. Like it's it's kind
- 4:51Speaker 1: of ridiculous. It's getting out of hand.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Yeah there, yeah, what do you think about it?
- 5:00Speaker 3: Anyway?
- 5:00Speaker 4: But to you because the film clip for the song
- 5:04Speaker 4: like it's it's weird, man, Like, it's strangely captivating. It's
- 5:07Speaker 4: got a cinematic looking and feel, complete with movie style credits,
- 5:10Speaker 4: but it just shows people walking through a sprawling city
- 5:13Speaker 4: from behind the same thing throughout. Like, listen to it
- 5:16Speaker 4: being described. It sounds really boring, but I found myself
- 5:19Speaker 4: unable to look away.
- 5:19Speaker 3: It's actually quite captivating film Clay.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it does kind of bring you back to a
- 5:24Speaker 2: little bit of what we're touching on in the song too.
- 5:26Speaker 2: I like it's a little it touches and like really
- 5:30Speaker 2: pries into that brain rot sense that so many people
- 5:32Speaker 2: are getting hooked on these days, where like you can't
- 5:35Speaker 2: you can't look away even if something isn't really happening,
- 5:39Speaker 2: You're just kind of sitting there. I know that I've
- 5:40Speaker 2: been victim to it too, where I'm sitting in a
- 5:42Speaker 2: video it's like watch till the end. It's like, okay, wait,
- 5:45Speaker 2: nothing happened, and the video is repeating again, what's going
- 5:47Speaker 2: on here?
- 5:50Speaker 4: Everyone says with the movies to see that after movie
- 5:52Speaker 4: credits scene, you know, like I'll just google it now
- 5:55Speaker 4: and go is there one in this movie?
- 5:57Speaker 5: Not?
- 5:57Speaker 3: I'm out here for.
- 6:00Speaker 2: That, like even if it says there isn't one here,
- 6:02Speaker 2: all stay just in case, Like.
- 6:06Speaker 4: Can you feel like an idiot when everyone else has
- 6:07Speaker 4: walked out and you're there by yourself.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I'm just sitting there with all the popcorn all over
- 6:11Speaker 2: my laugh, like, oh yeah, well here we go.
- 6:16Speaker 4: No, we've been touched on this a little bit before,
- 6:18Speaker 4: but in our society does see you introducing more melodicas
- 6:21Speaker 4: and then cleaning vokes and the stuff to your sound.
- 6:23Speaker 4: So is that something that you've been wanting to do
- 6:25Speaker 4: for a little while and it just happened to work
- 6:27Speaker 4: for this song.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Well, it's definitely something we've wanted to introduce into our sound,
- 6:32Speaker 2: both live and in the studio before, but it's kind
- 6:35Speaker 2: of it's kind of been something we've struggled with to
- 6:37Speaker 2: really execute on because you know, Matt's excellent what he does.
- 6:41Speaker 2: He is an excellent vocal range and age. Oh he's
- 6:44Speaker 2: extreme vocals. I mean as a guitarist and backup screamer,
- 6:47Speaker 2: Like I can really appreciate the talent he has. But
- 6:50Speaker 2: he really looked within himself and is like, you know,
- 6:52Speaker 2: we need somebody to bring us into that higher register.
- 6:54Speaker 2: We need somebody that can do this so that he
- 6:56Speaker 2: can do his best on stage with those real raw
- 6:59Speaker 2: screams and CJ can like flourish with those things. So
- 7:02Speaker 2: we've wanted to experiment it with a while. We have
- 7:05Speaker 2: written songs previously that do that, but it didn't translate
- 7:08Speaker 2: the best to live, so definitely it's something we've wanted
- 7:11Speaker 2: to experiment with for a while.
- 7:13Speaker 4: Speaking about live, bro, like you introduced a song to
- 7:15Speaker 4: fans on the just completed tour would make them suffering
- 7:18Speaker 4: justice for the dam So did the crowds like it?
- 7:21Speaker 3: Or did I get it straight away? Or does it standing? Dude?
- 7:24Speaker 2: The whole tour was so cool, like from the first
- 7:27Speaker 2: even though it is in our heavier song from the
- 7:29Speaker 2: first note, in most of the shows, people were just
- 7:31Speaker 2: ready to go, like they just wanted to like dance,
- 7:36Speaker 2: move along. Some people even knew the lyrics, which was
- 7:38Speaker 2: kind of wild to me as well, Like we heard
- 7:40Speaker 2: some singbacks too, which was like, well, sick, that's wild.
- 7:44Speaker 2: But no, it was seemed to be received really, really well,
- 7:48Speaker 2: and everybody commented on CJ's vocals lives because you heard
- 7:51Speaker 2: on the record it's high and soaring, but man can
- 7:53Speaker 2: do it live too, you can.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Were you nervous going into those shows about that song though?
- 7:58Speaker 4: I wonder how the fans and respond.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Yeah, honestly, like it's the same as a lot of
- 8:03Speaker 2: our releases. Too, where you've spent all this time curating
- 8:06Speaker 2: something and creating something that you really like, but you're
- 8:10Speaker 2: worried that the people who like our songs like Parasite
- 8:13Speaker 2: and Heresy, You're like, they're just gonna believe us.
- 8:18Speaker 1: No, I know they liked it too, And of course.
- 8:20Speaker 2: We've got the really nasty breakdown in the middle of it,
- 8:22Speaker 2: so people get what they came for.
- 8:26Speaker 4: Hope Ethetically, though, what would you have done if it
- 8:27Speaker 4: had have gone down a lead balloon every night and
- 8:29Speaker 4: people just didn't get into it.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Oh, we would have just kept full sending it at
- 8:34Speaker 2: the end of the day. We love it, right, And
- 8:36Speaker 2: if you don't like that song, then you know, we'll
- 8:38Speaker 2: obviously take the feedback for us. We're putting out there
- 8:42Speaker 2: what's true to us, I think for the majority of it,
- 8:45Speaker 2: if not all of it. So if you don't like
- 8:47Speaker 2: that song, you're gonna hear Parasites starting in the next
- 8:49Speaker 2: twenty minutes anyway, So you're going to come back in
- 8:51Speaker 2: for that and punch the best friend in the.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Face that first few music since heretic last April, so
- 9:00Speaker 4: that the standalone song Grara is a part of a
- 9:01Speaker 4: bigger picture.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Oh look, I can't like divulge too much into the
- 9:05Speaker 2: whole what's coming thing. Look, who knows who knows what's coming?
- 9:09Speaker 2: But there's there's there's a good amount coming on its way.
- 9:12Speaker 2: If I if I had only just heard of us,
- 9:14Speaker 2: i'd be looking, there's a good mix.
- 9:16Speaker 1: What's coming. You like our parasite stuff, then yeah, don't worry.
- 9:19Speaker 1: You won't be disappointed.
- 9:20Speaker 2: But there's plenty of other stuff that we want to
- 9:21Speaker 2: like flourish and really show off CJ's talents here as well,
- 9:25Speaker 2: delving more into melodic, delving into some dark themes, like
- 9:28Speaker 2: we've we've really been a band to focus on really
- 9:32Speaker 2: what's happening with people's mental health as well, and you
- 9:35Speaker 2: know that comes from experience as well as what we've
- 9:37Speaker 2: observed with their neur friends and family and just society
- 9:40Speaker 2: in general. So yeah, there's there's a lot coming, and
- 9:43Speaker 2: there's a lot of variants in there too.
- 9:45Speaker 5: Man.
- 9:45Speaker 2: But hey, I will say that there's a couple of
- 9:50Speaker 2: clips coming out potentially, and one of them may have
- 9:52Speaker 2: cleaned my leg during filming.
- 9:54Speaker 1: But we'll see, we'll see.
- 9:55Speaker 3: We'll sleep, we'll see.
- 9:56Speaker 4: When we're hopping around this time, I wrote like a
- 10:00Speaker 4: lot of your songs are written about personal natures and
- 10:02Speaker 4: mentioned health issues and stuff like that. But it's obviously
- 10:05Speaker 4: got to be cathartic for you guys in a way.
- 10:07Speaker 4: So what do you do one day when you've heared
- 10:09Speaker 4: yourselves and everything's happy in your world?
- 10:12Speaker 1: I don't know, man, is that even a possibility?
- 10:16Speaker 3: No?
- 10:17Speaker 2: I mean really, for us, it is like the lived experiences.
- 10:20Speaker 2: There's always something to draw from, and they're the easiest
- 10:23Speaker 2: ones to write about. I think people at least when
- 10:26Speaker 2: I hear somebody singing about something they're not super related
- 10:29Speaker 2: to or closer, you can kind of tell.
- 10:32Speaker 1: So for us, I don't know.
- 10:33Speaker 2: You'll you'll hear me scream the lyrics live for Impulse,
- 10:37Speaker 2: even if I'm not at the mic, because that song
- 10:39Speaker 2: just means so much to me. So yeah, in a way,
- 10:41Speaker 2: it's cathartic because it's just the release. You know you
- 10:43Speaker 2: got to you got to show up every day and
- 10:44Speaker 2: do what you've got to do for your job. But
- 10:46Speaker 2: the second you're on stage, it's like, you know what,
- 10:48Speaker 2: I gotta let it all out.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Different I've always wanted to decide to do. Bro, you're
- 10:54Speaker 4: basically readliving a bad part of your life. Every time
- 10:57Speaker 4: you see that like.
- 10:58Speaker 3: It does it sort of? Does it effect you in
- 11:02Speaker 3: that way?
- 11:03Speaker 2: It does, But I think for myself and a lot
- 11:05Speaker 2: of the guys in the band too, and I think
- 11:06Speaker 2: this is the same for a lot of artists. It's
- 11:08Speaker 2: the ability to take that like pre existing pain that
- 11:12Speaker 2: you've had to work through in one other way, write
- 11:14Speaker 2: it down in terms of a song, but then performing it.
- 11:17Speaker 2: It isn't like necessarily the negativity that's coming up for me,
- 11:20Speaker 2: it's the I've pushed through it. This is still something
- 11:23Speaker 2: that weighs on me, but I know that I can
- 11:26Speaker 2: get through this through this song, like and you get
- 11:30Speaker 2: the aggression out through that music, which translates obviously to
- 11:33Speaker 2: the pits and the walls of death. But at the
- 11:36Speaker 2: same time, I feel like if people sit down, like
- 11:39Speaker 2: listen to it, really listen to the lyrics and what
- 11:40Speaker 2: we're saying as well, you do get that not so
- 11:43Speaker 2: much reliving the pain as much as like, yeah, I've
- 11:47Speaker 2: conquered it and we're smashing through it, but.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Not in a power metal way, if you know what
- 11:50Speaker 1: I mean.
- 11:51Speaker 3: It's a lot cheaper than a therapist.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, it's actually something funny I heard
- 11:56Speaker 2: recently with somebody was eating dessert and it was like
- 11:58Speaker 2: six donuts for four bucks and I was like, oh man,
- 12:00Speaker 2: you're going through them like it's way cheaper than therapy,
- 12:02Speaker 2: and like facts.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Let donuts.
- 12:11Speaker 4: We've been spoking about the show you've just come off with,
- 12:13Speaker 4: Make Them Suffer Justice from the damn But you're probably
- 12:15Speaker 4: not allowed to answer to run either, so just give
- 12:17Speaker 4: me not a shake of the head.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Have you got any more coming.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Up tours and shows?
- 12:21Speaker 2: I mean, we've announced a couple on the socials, so
- 12:23Speaker 2: have a look, have a look for sure. But we've
- 12:26Speaker 2: got we're sitting on a couple of things and not
- 12:28Speaker 2: just music but announcements.
- 12:30Speaker 1: But we have announced a couple of them.
- 12:31Speaker 2: We're doing Tamworth as well as a festival with guys
- 12:34Speaker 2: as well, so definitely take a look. If you're around
- 12:37Speaker 2: in Tamworth, come and have a look because it seems.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Like not the country music festival surely, no no, no, no.
- 12:47Speaker 2: And then we have another show I think in Sydney
- 12:49Speaker 2: at the Lansdowne with guys for a festival there. It's
- 12:52Speaker 2: been an out so I this forut getting shot.
- 12:56Speaker 3: It's the best place for people to go and check
- 12:57Speaker 3: out what you're coming up and your.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Music definitely in surve Facebook, YouTube, all that sort of stuff,
- 13:02Speaker 2: and when the song's actually dropped there on all the
- 13:04Speaker 2: streaming platforms, So wherever you are, you can't escape.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Us before you go.
- 13:09Speaker 5: Bro.
- 13:09Speaker 4: You know I was telling you before about how we
- 13:11Speaker 4: could change the background even and stuff.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, we corporate out into a new segment called
- 13:15Speaker 3: photo Bombs.
- 13:16Speaker 4: So basically I've trod through social media before we had
- 13:19Speaker 4: a chat, and I've come up with some pictures that.
- 13:20Speaker 3: I want to know a little bit more about.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Okay, I couldn't find anything too bad I for it
- 13:26Speaker 4: to leave it.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Like what venue was that you wouldn't have two bigg
- 13:30Speaker 3: a singer fucking small?
- 13:33Speaker 2: Yeah, that looks like it was either the Biggie Bandroom
- 13:37Speaker 2: in Melbourne. I think I'm not sure actually, but oh
- 13:43Speaker 2: was it or is it the new venue? Noticed the
- 13:45Speaker 2: new venue in Melbourne? It had really good food. I
- 13:48Speaker 2: remember that, don't remember the name of it, but that
- 13:50Speaker 2: was a sick venue. Their pa that they've gotten there
- 13:53Speaker 2: is top notch. Yeah, that show went off. I love
- 13:58Speaker 2: that show. We were there with Villa Fire as well.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Always a good time.
- 14:01Speaker 4: No, it's what's so like that one. It's pretty low
- 14:03Speaker 4: that stage. What's the smallest stage you've ever played on it?
- 14:05Speaker 3: How'd you make it work?
- 14:08Speaker 1: The smallest one.
- 14:11Speaker 2: In Harroway, The smallest one we've probably played on might
- 14:13Speaker 2: be the birdikin middle floor or even no, it's probably
- 14:21Speaker 2: it's probably that one, to be honest. No bad decisions,
- 14:25Speaker 2: bad decisions in Melbourne. That is like a hallway, but
- 14:28Speaker 2: it's the best. It's like a floor show. Like we
- 14:30Speaker 2: had somebody get thrown onto our pedal board. That show
- 14:32Speaker 2: was hilarious and it started looping and looking like the
- 14:35Speaker 2: other guitarists just like it's.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Not me, it's not it's you and I. It was
- 14:40Speaker 1: just it was a mess, but so much fun.
- 14:43Speaker 4: The other photo I found, there's quite a few photos
- 14:46Speaker 4: of this little fellow.
- 14:47Speaker 3: I don't know who who he is.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Here we go, oh this is Henry.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Okay, okay, this is a bit of a deep cut.
- 14:56Speaker 2: So I am probably the most accident prone member in
- 14:59Speaker 2: the band. I've had two should of reconstructions. I've snapped
- 15:04Speaker 2: my atfl I've just completely demolished my knee. But on
- 15:08Speaker 2: one tour where we were going all across just regional
- 15:11Speaker 2: sort of stuff, at our Newcastle show, I had completely
- 15:15Speaker 2: fractured my wrist, like fractured my my strumming wrist and
- 15:19Speaker 2: couldn't play the remainder of the shows, Like I went
- 15:22Speaker 2: through two of them. I went through two shows with
- 15:24Speaker 2: the risk. Yeah, I was just smashing, smashing the painkillers
- 15:28Speaker 2: and playing through it. I woke up one morning and it.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Was just swollen.
- 15:33Speaker 2: And it hurt to even like make a fist and
- 15:36Speaker 2: I had to call it. So for the rest of
- 15:38Speaker 2: that tour, we actually had to chuck my guitar through
- 15:41Speaker 2: a track and we just chucked him on top of
- 15:42Speaker 2: the amp and was like, yeah, Henry's playing tonight. So
- 15:45Speaker 2: occasionally we would get messages from fans being like, is
- 15:47Speaker 2: it Aunt or is it our hen three playing tonight?
- 15:49Speaker 3: So that's that's that's I don't have to live after that.
- 15:54Speaker 1: He hasn't played a show since, so yeah.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Very nice speaking with any Mode.
- 16:01Speaker 4: The single Nur Society is out now and it is
- 16:04Speaker 4: different from har Away, but it is also an absolute
- 16:06Speaker 4: fucking banging bro So I look forward to listening to
- 16:08Speaker 4: some of the stuff that may or may not be
- 16:10Speaker 4: coming out in the near future.
