- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Have you ever had a dream that you that that that you um you um that you had a dream that you um when he finally ends that bit?
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: I think he ends it with that he touch you so good, you look real.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: And we we used to say that to each other all the time.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: It was fucking classic bit that bit.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Oh there's so many good bring back, bring back Vine.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Rip rip Vine.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: The camera's not on.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Damn it.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: I can't barrel the camera.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: Why would you want to barrel up the camera?
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: This is what I'm talking about with your aggression.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: We were talking about it off-air, and you just need to you're cracking your knuckles as if to threaten me.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: I'm getting ready for a fight, Sam.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, couldn't fight your way out of a wet paper bag.
- 0:52SPEAKER_02: Actually, no.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: One time, this is hello everyone, welcome to vinyl club.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: Let's get straight to it.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: Apologies for the lightness.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: We had to get Sibyl Plan out early, so you're getting this light.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: Max and I were listening to the hottest 100.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: I think it was at the start of the year, and Max had had a couple.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: I don't know which fucking story this is.
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: Keep going.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: I and I don't know how it came up.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: We were talking about fighting, and I think we were like pretending we were trying to figure out who would win, and then you dead eye stared at me.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: And you like you had a few, so the liquid confidence was up.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: I was just like, no, I'll just run around you.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: Was this this year?
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, keep going.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: I was like, Oh, I'll run around you, like you wouldn't be able to catch me.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: And you went, no, no.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: If I caught you, you're fucked.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's true.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: I stand by that statement, and I was shocked.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: I was like, whoa, yeah, Papa.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: What's that uh Teddy Reesewell quote?
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: Speak softly and carry a big stick.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, it was quite intimidating.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: I was like, ooh, quiet assassin over here.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: Anyway, Maxwell, you gave me some homework.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: I did.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: I gave you Chet Faker's latest album, uh, A Love of Strangers.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: A love for strangers, indeed.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: And realizing now I've listened to the wrong album.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: Have you actually?
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: No.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: I just thought that'd be funny.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: Got him.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: Fucking hell.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: Oh, I could see his gut drop just then.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: Oh fuck.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: No, I've I'm not gonna lie.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: I really enjoyed this album.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: I thought you would.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Here's the thing.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: I was like, I think this might be a real dark horse for Sam.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: But it yeah, I won't, I won't talk anymore.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: He's like, oh my god, he likes an album.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: So Chet Faker, known for songs like Gold, No Diggity, Talk Is Cheap.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: No songs that really excite me.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: I think previously Gold and Talk Is Cheap were two songs where I was like, I on paper I should like this, but something about them just didn't click for me.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: It felt a bit forced to me.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: Potentially.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: It was also it was the year when I felt like high by Peking Duck should have won the Hottest 100.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: And they didn't.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: Oh, so he was a bit niffed.
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: Those dirty bastards.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, it's a very cool album.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: It caught me by surprise.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: I did not expect to like it, and I walked out going, This was a very nice listening experience.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: I think overall, as a collective, the album is really beautiful.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: I probably wouldn't listen to the songs individually, but as a record, it's really good.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: So Chet Faker known for like his indie kind of soulful.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Um I feel like he was doing bedroom pop before it was bedroom pop.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I would say, yeah, I completely agree.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: It's um felt very bedroom pop, and his voice at times was a bit grating for me.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: But then listening to this album, it's ambient, it's got these 90 sort of synth soundscapes to them.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: Um, it's ballady at times, it's piano heavy, it's got this really nice range.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: But let's dive in, shall we?
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: Let's get in, son.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: So it's 12 songs, which to me at first was like, holy fuck.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: Hey Siri, play Kate Bush.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: Oh, Siri is playing Kate Bush one moment.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: Um, so starting off, uh over you, the opening song, it's ambient into this really cool like 90s upbeat soundscape.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: It I've got here like it feels like upbeat enya.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: I can, yeah.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: And then next word, I said, love it.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Love it.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: Good start.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: And I was like, fuck, we're on here.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: What's the next what's the next song be shit?
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: Because when you don't like an artist traditionally, you're like, no, it's too good to be true.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: It's a fluke, it's a fluke.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: They've they've decided to write one song that's different, and the rest of the album is normal.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: Broken clock is right twice a day.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: It is.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: I'm like, no, I'm gonna like one song and maybe an interlude, and the rest will be shit.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: So trepidatiously, oh yeah, you like that.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: Damn.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you like that?
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: Damn.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: Uh then we went into a thousand ways.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: Um, and I've just written in I'm in a forest, laid back and full of emotion.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: This uh this this album's really activated your poetry side.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: It has.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: Did I type it in the car?
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: But the the subtle horns are really nice in the way it kind of builds and has this quite peaceful atmosphere.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: I thought it was quite nice.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: But I've got in here, it needs sacks.
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they've got some little trumpets in there in the background.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: It's very you it feels like a headphone album.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: And there's there is a bit of sacks later in the album, so he was there or thereabouts.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: Don't worry.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: I know we get to it.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: I know where the sax is.
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: Uh Far Side of the Moon, very similar to A Thousand Ways.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: It feels like you're in a forest walking through with minimal clothing, nice breeze through the tukas.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Um, then you've just got, you know.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: Breeze just spreading, going around the tree trunks.
- 5:58SPEAKER_02: If you will, yeah.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: Bit of shrinkage naturally, just due to the the airflow.
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: It's a bit of a brisk morning.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: And then the children are on the playground and you're going, I could get in trouble here.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: That's no good.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: I need to escape fast.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: Then you turn around.
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: It's a grizzly bear.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: So talk about a rough day.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: I think I'd go for the grizzly bear, to be honest.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: So would I.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: Um, this time for real, fourth track.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: Elton John on the Keys, I notice.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: He does get a bit a little bit piano-y there, doesn't he?
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: A bit piano, man.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: Uh, just for the record, Elton John's not on it.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: But um, I said Elton John on the Keys, McElmore could rap over this if he wanted to.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, okay.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: It felt very like 2012.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but by way of that, like a lot of McElmore's samples did feel like they were like 70s ballads that he was like, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: I said this is more classic chet, and this is where I started to go, fuck, I think I'm in trouble here.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: Okay, he's gonna go back into cheap, man.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: Shut the fuck up.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: Uh, anyway.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, can you swim?
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: We're back.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes, I can.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: It's gotta be my biggest ick.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: People that can't swim and people that can't run.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'll I'll give you half an ick.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: I can get a cream for that, that's fine.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: Um the guitars sound like trumpets in a way in this song.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a bit niche of me to say.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: Look, I I'm not saying no, I think I might just have to go back and re-listen and get a get a feel for it.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: So, in the way he's created sort of the back half of the album, I've got in here there's a lot of radio head influence just in the experimentation and the way you know Radiohead famously create ambience and um play with their instrument effects.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: So, yeah, I've got guitars to sound like trumpets, radio head on the piano, and it's soulful, ballady, and beautiful.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: There you go, copy that one.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: Lovely.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: Uh, remember me.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: Sacks to the max.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Yes, bit of sacks in here.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: So the lo-fi synth uh I've said sacks to eat my ass to.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: Jesus.
- 7:54unknown: Whew!
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: It's not something I want in my life, but I don't know.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: Sounds like it might be.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: I don't think I meant to write my sacks to eat ass to would make a lot more sense.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: A bit of a Freudian slip, was it?
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: Or was it a suggestion?
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Freudian slip one in.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: Just a little thumb over the top.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: We'll never know.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, and it picks up just the way you want it to.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: It sort of has this um monotonous feel to it that is hypnotic, but then as you start to slip out of that comfort with it, you go, fuck, all right, pick up, pick up.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: And then it does, and then it goes back down.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: It's very well written, that one.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: Uh inefficient love, draw acoustic, it's stripped back.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: Again, very radio head.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: If they did a like an MTV session, uh, there's a couple of interludes that I'm gonna leave out, but the thing about nothing featuring Alex vs.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: Alex was an interesting one for me, and the way her voice fits into this song is really nice.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: I think so often bands put in um features for the sake of it, and it doesn't always fit.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: It's like it's a bit of a flex when they go, Oh, we've got this band, we've got this artist, we've got this singer.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: You're like, fucking it doesn't work though.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Whereas this feels perfectly placed, their vocals are very raw, they're vulnerable, and the instrumentation on the song suits it perfectly.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: So very pretty, that very atmospheric.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: Very nice.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: And then oh no, oh no.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: There's a famous interpolation in the beginning.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: I can't figure out what it is.
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: I'll go back and have a listen to that.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'll come back with notes.
- 9:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, but it's very feel-good, it's the most vibey song of the album, and you kind of need that after a bit of emotional weight in the beginning, and then just my hallelujah.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: Jesus Christ, what a way to end the album.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: Five minutes of just piano ballad.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: It's that was a standout.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go back and listen to that a couple more times.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: But I think for me, Over You was a highlight, just my hallelujah.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: Um, and then Can You Swim as well was cool, but yeah, like I said, I very much didn't expect to like it, and I spent a lot of time on it.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: Look, I'm glad that it was a bit of a surprise for you.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: A bit of a surprise, but it was a bit of a surprise for me as well.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: I think, as I said to you last week when I gave this to you, uh, this record to me was one where I was like, you know, it came off my new music, and I was like, all right, I'll listen to one.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'll I'll get on with one.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: And then another one came and I was like, okay, okay.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: And then I think I listened to probably like seven or eight of them eventually, because it just kept feeding me one after another.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: And I was like, I like enough of this album that I think I just like the album.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: And I love it when it's like that because you just continuously go through and you're like, oh, okay, I've got a contender.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: Love that.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, I've got some homework for you, Maxwell.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: Please, what do we listen to, Sambo?
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: Bless you.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm gonna give you an album that I've been blasting.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: Halcyon Blues by Citizens.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: Another AOTYC.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: AOTYC.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's it's emotional.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: Obviously, we spoke to Matt uh on the show about it, so you're a bit familiar with it, but I just want to hear your thoughts on the pod.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, Sam.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Well, uh, I'll bring that to you next week.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: Um, long wait.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Long wait to hear what I think.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Long wait.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: Any vinyl thoughts?
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: Sam, uh, not really.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: I've had a couple of uh little cheeky ones come in um that I might give you a little later on.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: Uh but nothing nothing too crazy just yet.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: Nothing too crazy.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: How about yourself?
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: No, none for me.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: Just a bit tight on the purse strings at the moment.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: So yeah, but what about your wallet?
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: Anyway, thanks, guys.
