- 1:38Speaker 9: Powered Sports Talk Dusty and Rusty edition here on a Monday,
- 1:42Speaker 9: and we're just talking about whatever's going on in sports
- 1:44Speaker 9: at the middle of summer, including I'm trying to talk
- 1:48Speaker 9: as much soccer as ever going to be talked on
- 1:51Speaker 9: Chip show. And it's kind of intentional. So France, you.
- 1:55Speaker 10: Had to do that without one man for France as.
- 1:57Speaker 9: A one zero lead at halftime against Iraq.
- 2:00Speaker 10: That's important though you have to say nil.
- 2:02Speaker 9: Yeah, but I'm not I'm not sure, but I that's
- 2:05Speaker 9: what the Brets say on TV, right, because you say one.
- 2:08Speaker 10: Meal or anything's nil, then then you're good.
- 2:11Speaker 9: Right. I think we got that. So we've got that
- 2:14Speaker 9: on here in the studio and if in Bope scores
- 2:16Speaker 9: again and works towards MESSI we'll let you know. But
- 2:21Speaker 9: we didn't talk about this in the first hour. I
- 2:23Speaker 9: brought it up before you got here. But what do
- 2:26Speaker 9: you think about the Dallas Mavericks, uh grabbing Dusty May
- 2:29Speaker 9: away from Michigan. Yeah, just back in the Brinks truck up.
- 2:33Speaker 9: We don't know.
- 2:34Speaker 11: So my history of Mavericks goes back to nineteen eighty.
- 2:37Speaker 11: I was at the first game that they ever played,
- 2:39Speaker 11: debat San Antonio. My license plate has a Mavericks logo
- 2:43Speaker 11: on it, So I'm really quite excited about this. I
- 2:48Speaker 11: think that that's the best possible scenario. I think you
- 2:51Speaker 11: know what Dusty May has done at FAU. I think
- 2:54Speaker 11: obviously everybody who knows he won a NAST championship last
- 2:57Speaker 11: night at or last year at Michigan, and he put
- 3:00Speaker 11: that team together at starting five. None of them were
- 3:05Speaker 11: part of Michigan the year before. So very very impressed
- 3:09Speaker 11: with him as a coach. But what he did at FAU,
- 3:12Speaker 11: to me, is even more impressive than because he got
- 3:16Speaker 11: that team to the final four. And that's more impressive
- 3:19Speaker 11: to me than winning it all at Michigan. Apparently, I
- 3:23Speaker 11: don't know the ins and outs of it, but I
- 3:26Speaker 11: listened to Dallas Sports Radio today and they're just talking
- 3:30Speaker 11: about how the relationship building is the key to him and.
- 3:33Speaker 9: So, which is crucial in the NBA.
- 3:36Speaker 11: Absolutely, And it's crucial because the draft tomorrow and they've
- 3:39Speaker 11: got the number nine pick, and so who knows more
- 3:43Speaker 11: about college basketball right now than Dusty May right, So
- 3:47Speaker 11: I'll be quite intrigued to see how they handle that
- 3:51Speaker 11: draft tomorrow night. I imagine that a big part of
- 3:56Speaker 11: him coming to Dallas was the ability to coach Cooper
- 4:00Speaker 11: Flag for a long time, and Cooper Flag being nineteen years.
- 4:03Speaker 9: And you say that until he gets really good and
- 4:05Speaker 9: they trade him off for nobody, don't.
- 4:09Speaker 10: Go back there with me, don't. I've moved on now, Okay.
- 4:14Speaker 11: So yeah, that was a really tough stretch.
- 4:18Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean that was that was embarrassing. And I
- 4:22Speaker 10: don't know, but that got the guy who did that,
- 4:25Speaker 10: I don't, I don't.
- 4:27Speaker 9: He's gone.
- 4:29Speaker 11: So I was one of those from Afar fire Nico. Yeah,
- 4:34Speaker 11: I was all about.
- 4:36Speaker 9: It, you and every other Mavericks fan.
- 4:38Speaker 10: Yes, And you know.
- 4:39Speaker 11: I think that this team needed a new voice. I
- 4:43Speaker 11: think Jason Kidd had run his course. Interesting that you know,
- 4:47Speaker 11: in the last four coaches that Dallas has had, all
- 4:52Speaker 11: four of them got Dallas to the finals within the
- 4:56Speaker 11: first three years, and so I'm not saying that's going
- 4:58Speaker 11: to happen now, but they've got you know, they've got
- 5:02Speaker 11: two draft picks in the first.
- 5:03Speaker 10: Round to Marrow. It's a really deep draft.
- 5:07Speaker 11: They don't have anything draft pick wise for years after
- 5:11Speaker 11: that because they've traded it all the way. But they've
- 5:14Speaker 11: got some interesting pieces and it'll be interesting to see
- 5:18Speaker 11: how they structure things. But yeah, I'm really excited as
- 5:21Speaker 11: a matteris fan. You know, they at FAU they called
- 5:25Speaker 11: him Dusty March and then he became Dusty April and
- 5:30Speaker 11: by winning the national championship at the Michigan So I'm
- 5:33Speaker 11: hoping he becomes Dusty June in Dallas.
- 5:36Speaker 9: There you go.
- 5:37Speaker 10: Yeah, that's my hope.
- 5:39Speaker 9: So, you know, first thing when I'm reading this, I'm going,
- 5:42Speaker 9: what does that do to college basketball? That, first of all,
- 5:49Speaker 9: a national championship teams players are now available to be
- 5:53Speaker 9: plucked off right for fifteen days now. It looks like
- 5:57Speaker 9: Michigan is going to hire Boyton the assistant coach and
- 6:02Speaker 9: try and keep that team together, which will slow down
- 6:05Speaker 9: the carousel. But the other side could be if they don't,
- 6:10Speaker 9: if they go steal in other team's players. We can
- 6:12Speaker 9: have a cascading effect of guys opening up in the
- 6:15Speaker 9: portal as coaches leave across the country.
- 6:18Speaker 10: Yeah, and how's that benefit A and M.
- 6:20Speaker 11: Maybe there's there's still no scholarship out there, I think
- 6:23Speaker 11: so I'd be really intrigued to see what Bucky can do.
- 6:28Speaker 11: But I think, you know, that says a lot about
- 6:30Speaker 11: the instability of college I mean, I think Dusty may
- 6:35Speaker 11: probably looked at it as like, well, I just put
- 6:38Speaker 11: a team together. If you remember, I don't know if
- 6:40Speaker 11: you listen to him right after they won the national championship,
- 6:43Speaker 11: He's like, it's almost like hard to leave that we
- 6:46Speaker 11: won the national championship because I had to go to
- 6:47Speaker 11: work the next day, Like, I mean, I gotta keep
- 6:51Speaker 11: this team together or I gotta, you know, get a
- 6:54Speaker 11: new team.
- 6:55Speaker 10: So the fact that you don't have contracts in college.
- 7:00Speaker 9: Which is crazy, it's it's stupid.
- 7:02Speaker 11: So it's a lot easier to put a team, really
- 7:05Speaker 11: good team together at the professional level and keep that
- 7:08Speaker 11: team the pieces that you want, right.
- 7:11Speaker 10: I mean, it's just I think that N I. L
- 7:16Speaker 10: Is driving out a lot of the great college coaches.
- 7:20Speaker 10: And we saw it right, we saw it at Alabama. Right,
- 7:24Speaker 10: Nick Saban's like, I'm done with this. I don't want
- 7:26Speaker 10: to play this game.
- 7:27Speaker 9: Well, there will be others that don't want to play
- 7:32Speaker 9: this game that aren't as ready to retire as Nick
- 7:37Speaker 9: was already.
- 7:38Speaker 11: I think a Cwimson South Carolina who hasn't played that
- 7:42Speaker 11: game very well, and I think he's on the hot seat.
- 7:44Speaker 9: Well that's that's different. He's not leaving because if he leaves,
- 7:48Speaker 9: it won't be his choice.
- 7:49Speaker 11: Right, My my nephew goes to Clemson, and that seat
- 7:53Speaker 11: is very, very hot.
- 7:55Speaker 9: I have no doubt about that one bit. I just
- 7:59Speaker 9: you know, speaking of the instability of college and you
- 8:06Speaker 9: know the Senate's going to vote on this bill, Ted
- 8:11Speaker 9: Cruz's Save College Sports Actor. I can't protect college sports.
- 8:16Speaker 9: There's so many that I can't keep up with all
- 8:18Speaker 9: the names of them. But interesting uphill battle that both
- 8:23Speaker 9: the SEC and the Big Ten have come out with
- 8:26Speaker 9: a joint statement opposing the bill now that it's going
- 8:30Speaker 9: to the Senate floor. To me, something has to give.
- 8:36Speaker 9: There has to be some legislation that comes about. And
- 8:42Speaker 9: any time you get Congress involved, you're not going to
- 8:44Speaker 9: get the legislation that you want, if that makes sense.
- 8:47Speaker 9: But you know, obviously the SEC and Big ten are
- 8:52Speaker 9: opposed to it because they're banned from joining together to
- 8:56Speaker 9: create a superconference, which we all know is coming.
- 8:59Speaker 10: Oh yeah, coming.
- 9:01Speaker 9: I mean if it doesn't come in all the sports,
- 9:04Speaker 9: it's coming in football, there's no doubt, and it needs to.
- 9:08Speaker 9: And to me, there should be two divisions, a division
- 9:13Speaker 9: that all the players are employees and a division that
- 9:18Speaker 9: they're amateurs. Yeah, and both of those groups should be
- 9:22Speaker 9: able to enforce their own rules, yep.
- 9:25Speaker 12: And so.
- 9:28Speaker 9: Having legislation that tries to stop the obvious.
- 9:33Speaker 11: How many schools do you think will be that super conference?
- 9:39Speaker 9: The in my mind at sixty four?
- 9:42Speaker 10: Yeah, I see that too, and I.
- 9:44Speaker 9: Think that that's a stretch. I think honestly, they're probably
- 9:50Speaker 9: closer to forty eight that can afford to be in
- 9:52Speaker 9: that group.
- 9:52Speaker 10: So four groups at twelve.
- 9:55Speaker 9: But I think it'll be sixty four. And because there's
- 10:02Speaker 9: roughly so.
- 10:03Speaker 11: You're talking about four groups of sixteen and right or
- 10:06Speaker 11: eight groups eight?
- 10:08Speaker 10: Okay, well, yeah, I mean whatever, but yeah, I agree.
- 10:11Speaker 9: Because once it forms, conferences don't matter anymore, right, right,
- 10:15Speaker 9: It'll it'll be divisions within the lake.
- 10:18Speaker 10: It'll be pro sports. Yeah, it will be.
- 10:20Speaker 9: And let's be honest, why are we pretending that it's
- 10:23Speaker 9: not now?
- 10:24Speaker 10: It is now?
- 10:25Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean there's an obvious answer why we're pretending
- 10:28Speaker 9: it's not because eventually football players are going to go.
- 10:36Speaker 9: I don't really want to give my revenue away to
- 10:39Speaker 9: I'll pick softball because that's the sport that I like
- 10:42Speaker 9: to follow. But is the softball funded on the back
- 10:47Speaker 9: of football players revenue? Absolutely it is. Yeah, of course
- 10:51Speaker 9: it is. And let's be honest, baseball is too. If
- 10:54Speaker 9: you look at the numbers, well, baseball brings in a
- 10:58Speaker 9: lot of revenue. They also spend a lot.
- 11:00Speaker 11: Well, they spend more now than ever before because they're paying.
- 11:05Speaker 10: Those nil dollars and they're able to pay.
- 11:09Speaker 11: To get those you know, lower economic kids that couldn't
- 11:15Speaker 11: play college baseball in the past because they were getting
- 11:18Speaker 11: parts of scholarships.
- 11:19Speaker 10: Well, now they're able to pay them enough.
- 11:22Speaker 9: That they can come.
- 11:23Speaker 11: They can come here and they can play college athletics
- 11:25Speaker 11: and they can play three or four years.
- 11:27Speaker 9: And honestly, Major League Baseball is loving it. Oh yeah,
- 11:30Speaker 9: because you know you saw it last week, right, major
- 11:33Speaker 9: League Baseball is proposing no high school players in the
- 11:36Speaker 9: upcoming drafts. Yeah, ban them from A which I don't
- 11:41Speaker 9: know how that's gonna work. I mean, it seems there
- 11:44Speaker 9: has to be some non college alternative to get some
- 11:48Speaker 9: of those players.
- 11:48Speaker 10: We're going to have a lockout here next year, unfortunately.
- 11:51Speaker 11: I mean there's no doubt in my mind there's gonna
- 11:53Speaker 11: be a lockout with all these issues that are coming up.
- 11:57Speaker 10: There's gonna be a strike and lockout however you want
- 11:59Speaker 10: to see. Say that, but.
- 12:03Speaker 11: More and more MLA teams are going straight to college
- 12:07Speaker 11: players than ever before because they know that these guys
- 12:10Speaker 11: are more ready than ever before.
- 12:13Speaker 9: And they can get them developed on somebody else's dollar exactly.
- 12:17Speaker 9: They're not having to pay to have a minor league
- 12:19Speaker 9: team anymore.
- 12:20Speaker 10: So I could see major league.
- 12:21Speaker 9: I mean, obviously they still have minor league teams, but
- 12:23Speaker 9: they can cut the bottom half of the minor league.
- 12:25Speaker 11: Yeah, I can see them doing away with low A
- 12:27Speaker 11: ball even I mean all together.
- 12:30Speaker 9: Yeah, have double and triple A ball.
- 12:32Speaker 11: I think you have double A, triple A and rookie ball,
- 12:35Speaker 11: and that would be it for the minor league system.
- 12:38Speaker 9: But a rookie ball can last a month, right, I mean, yeah, that's.
- 12:41Speaker 10: Just that's like very short season.
- 12:44Speaker 11: I mean that's in Arizona, and that's just like, yeah,
- 12:46Speaker 11: a month, month and a half something like that.
- 12:49Speaker 10: But there's no reason to pay, you know.
- 12:52Speaker 11: I know some of those cities are going to be
- 12:54Speaker 11: upset about losing a ball, but I could see this
- 12:58Speaker 11: lots of savings from Major Lege baseball.
- 13:01Speaker 9: You know, I think we saw that across college baseball
- 13:04Speaker 9: this year. The guys that probably would have gone pros
- 13:08Speaker 9: in years past, we're able to get enough nil dollars
- 13:11Speaker 9: that they stayed in college.
- 13:14Speaker 11: Well, and that's that's exactly right. And so are you
- 13:17Speaker 11: going to draft a guy out of high school? If
- 13:21Speaker 11: you draft a guy as a major league team, if
- 13:22Speaker 11: you draft a guy at high school, then you know
- 13:26Speaker 11: the college where he is committed to has the opportunities, Like,
- 13:30Speaker 11: you know what, we'll give you an extra million, right,
- 13:34Speaker 11: So come stay with us and you can get your
- 13:37Speaker 11: education and you don't have to ride any buses, and
- 13:39Speaker 11: then you'll be ready in three years to go straight
- 13:42Speaker 11: to the majors.
- 13:43Speaker 9: Paul schemes, right, I mean, And one thing that's in
- 13:47Speaker 9: the Major League Baseball's proposal besides not taking him out
- 13:53Speaker 9: of high school. They want to make sophomores now draft
- 13:57Speaker 9: eligible instead of juniors. You only have to go for
- 14:00Speaker 9: two years. That's interesting because they're using college as their
- 14:06Speaker 9: minor league developmental program.
- 14:08Speaker 11: But still the option is if you're draftable but the
- 14:12Speaker 11: school's ponying up the money, is your signing bonus gonna
- 14:16Speaker 11: be bigger than what you can get?
- 14:18Speaker 9: Oh? Sure, there's realities there and there There have been
- 14:23Speaker 9: players at A and M that probably could have gone
- 14:25Speaker 9: pro that made the decision to come back and made
- 14:28Speaker 9: themselves money while they were here and more money when
- 14:30Speaker 9: they left.
- 14:31Speaker 11: Conversely, also there's guys getting really good money right now
- 14:36Speaker 11: at Texas A and M and every other major school
- 14:39Speaker 11: that they're never gonna sniff the big leagues, right, I
- 14:42Speaker 11: mean sure, they're not going to ever make this much
- 14:44Speaker 11: money again on a baseball field.
- 14:47Speaker 10: So enjoy it. I mean yeah, live it up.
- 14:52Speaker 9: Let me switch gears for just a second. The best player, no,
- 14:56Speaker 9: the highest played player player in college softball, now's your
- 15:00Speaker 9: Kennedy from Texas. The pitcher from Texas Tech was making
- 15:05Speaker 9: a little over a million dollars a year playing college softball.
- 15:09Speaker 9: She holds out in the pros because they're they're not
- 15:12Speaker 9: sniffing the contract that she's had for the last two
- 15:15Speaker 9: years exactly, And so I think she missed the first
- 15:19Speaker 9: week or so of the season holding out. But the
- 15:22Speaker 9: reality was they weren't gonna come up with the kind
- 15:25Speaker 9: of money that a billionaire wanting to put Texas Tech
- 15:28Speaker 9: on the map was willing to pay her to come there.
- 15:30Speaker 11: There are a bunch of guys in college athletics right
- 15:33Speaker 11: now making six figures, and they're gonna graduate, and they're
- 15:37Speaker 11: gonna finish, and they're gonna go in the job market,
- 15:40Speaker 11: and they're gonna have to take a serious pay cut
- 15:42Speaker 11: to get that first job.
- 15:43Speaker 9: I'm saying it's gonna happen.
- 15:45Speaker 11: If you're customed to make it two hundred thousand dollars
- 15:48Speaker 11: and then your first job you're making sixty. That's a
- 15:51Speaker 11: big adjustment, and that's gonna be the reality of what
- 15:56Speaker 11: these guys are gonna have to totally adjust their lifestyles
- 16:00Speaker 11: because there's no guarantee it's not going to go on forever.
- 16:04Speaker 9: Oh there's no doubt about it. And you know, the
- 16:08Speaker 9: question is going to become how this all works out
- 16:12Speaker 9: moving forward, because right now, the college landscape is set
- 16:20Speaker 9: for this to always expand, and there there will be
- 16:23Speaker 9: guardrails put up. And when those guardrails happen, the football
- 16:28Speaker 9: players are going to want to put a fence around
- 16:31Speaker 9: their money.
- 16:31Speaker 10: Yes, they are. They are because.
- 16:34Speaker 9: There will be collective bargaining at some point, and every
- 16:37Speaker 9: school poses it.
- 16:38Speaker 10: You have to have collective bargaining, because that is the key.
- 16:42Speaker 10: That's that's key.
- 16:43Speaker 11: In Major League Baseball, they have collective bargaining right right,
- 16:46Speaker 11: And so the gambling issues that we just saw at
- 16:50Speaker 11: Texas Tech, it all worked out right because he's gone,
- 16:55Speaker 11: he's moving on, and the lawsuit was effective. But the
- 16:59Speaker 11: fact that you could make up your own rules is
- 17:02Speaker 11: because there isn't any collective bargaining. You have to get
- 17:05Speaker 11: the players to buy in on what are the rules, right.
- 17:08Speaker 9: And then they can't go to court.
- 17:09Speaker 11: Exactly, Pete Rose, you can't go to court because you
- 17:13Speaker 11: agreed to this by signing a major league contract, because
- 17:17Speaker 11: that was in the collective bargaining.
- 17:19Speaker 10: So you cannot carry on the.
- 17:21Speaker 11: Way they're doing college athletics without collective bargaining.
- 17:24Speaker 10: I'm one hundred percent convinced of that.
- 17:26Speaker 9: And the only question right now is who do you
- 17:31Speaker 9: collective bargain with.
- 17:32Speaker 10: What's a good question yet, right?
- 17:34Speaker 9: I mean, and it's there are pockets that want to say, hey,
- 17:41Speaker 9: all college athletes are involved in collective bargaining, so track
- 17:45Speaker 9: has as much a seat at the table as as football.
- 17:50Speaker 11: And why And then you said earlier it's like that
- 17:52Speaker 11: sixty four schools, it's not going to apply for all sports.
- 17:56Speaker 10: No, it's gonna be for football.
- 17:58Speaker 9: Well, and but without the football if if football separates
- 18:04Speaker 9: themselves and separates their revenue and separates their revenue sharing,
- 18:09Speaker 9: where do the other sports get their money?
- 18:11Speaker 10: Yeah, that's true.
- 18:12Speaker 9: So and that's where it comes down to, who do
- 18:15Speaker 9: you collective bargain with? Does football get to have their
- 18:19Speaker 9: own collective bargaining for their revenue? And basketball? And then
- 18:23Speaker 9: you know, how does that how does that divide up?
- 18:25Speaker 9: I mean, running the whole department, everybody kind of contributes
- 18:28Speaker 9: to expenses and whatnot, and and how how does that
- 18:33Speaker 9: work out? So when collective bargaining happens, the key will
- 18:38Speaker 9: be who does it happen with? Ye, whether whether it's
- 18:42Speaker 9: the broad college athlete or whether it's each individual sport.
- 18:47Speaker 11: Yeah, that's gonna be a really interesting question because, like
- 18:53Speaker 11: you said, if you break it down and it's football
- 18:55Speaker 11: only football goes away? Then how do you pay for
- 18:59Speaker 11: track and field? How do you pay for uh soccer?
- 19:02Speaker 11: How do you pay for all these non revenue sports?
- 19:05Speaker 11: And then you get into Title nine and like, how's
- 19:10Speaker 11: that changed?
- 19:10Speaker 10: Right?
- 19:11Speaker 9: Well, if your employees, it's it's different, right, I guess
- 19:14Speaker 9: you're right. So, I mean, but that's another question that
- 19:17Speaker 9: has to be tackled, and one that while this train
- 19:21Speaker 9: is running away and expenses are getting so much that
- 19:24Speaker 9: they're going to run out of other people's money, everyone's
- 19:28Speaker 9: shying away from because they don't want to dive into
- 19:30Speaker 9: those waters.
- 19:31Speaker 11: And yet, and yet college athletics is never been more popular.
- 19:35Speaker 11: I mean, for sure TV revenues and that that that
- 19:38Speaker 11: type of things like stadiums are still filled.
- 19:42Speaker 10: I mean, who is it?
- 19:44Speaker 9: Just announced it Florida, right, Florida just amounts announced a
- 19:51Speaker 9: billion dollar stadium renovation. Wow to the swamp a billion dollars.
- 19:56Speaker 10: Wow.
- 19:58Speaker 9: Can you imagine in today's day and age, where everyone
- 20:00Speaker 9: scrambling to keep up with just the cost of a roster,
- 20:05Speaker 9: that you need to throw a billion dollars into your stadium?
- 20:08Speaker 10: No, I can't imagine that. I mean a m did
- 20:11Speaker 10: it at the right.
- 20:12Speaker 9: Time, right, gun Lucky, I mean, honestly, yeah.
- 20:15Speaker 10: Because you can't.
- 20:16Speaker 11: I can't imagine that you need to spend a billion
- 20:21Speaker 11: dollars on a football stadium. What's the upside? I mean,
- 20:25Speaker 11: where's where's the revenue? I guess the suites. I mean
- 20:29Speaker 11: it has to be right, it has to be huge revenue,
- 20:32Speaker 11: because otherwise, why would you do it. You don't need
- 20:35Speaker 11: a stadium to recruit anymore. It's about the dollars.
- 20:39Speaker 9: And it matters though, Yeah, and it matters to the
- 20:43Speaker 9: donors that they're asking money for. Hey, what can you
- 20:46Speaker 9: give me? I'm gonna build some more suites and I'm
- 20:49Speaker 9: gonna give you one.
- 20:50Speaker 11: Yeah, I know donors who you know, paid millions and
- 20:54Speaker 11: millions and millions and facilities, and yeah, they're they're a
- 20:59Speaker 11: little angry that the same university comes back every year
- 21:03Speaker 11: now asking for millions and millions and millions.
- 21:05Speaker 10: Because we need the players. Well, the game's changed, I
- 21:10Speaker 10: mean everything's changed.
- 21:13Speaker 9: Yeah. When I saw that, I was baffled. Now I
- 21:16Speaker 9: will say they have a pretty good facilities guy working
- 21:19Speaker 9: for them now, yeah, yeah, and who built some pretty
- 21:23Speaker 9: good facilities when he was here at A and M.
- 21:25Speaker 9: Who's moved on to Florida, and it'll probably be a
- 21:28Speaker 9: pretty nice football stadium when they get it done. But
- 21:30Speaker 9: they're gonna have to do what A and M's done
- 21:35Speaker 9: in making that facility available outside of the football to
- 21:40Speaker 9: try and find ways to pay for it.
- 21:42Speaker 10: Soccer concert, those kind things.
- 21:44Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, I think it's going to be the norm, right,
- 21:47Speaker 9: those kind of things.
- 21:48Speaker 10: Yeah, whatever you gotta do to generate revenue.
- 21:50Speaker 9: How many of those have you done?
- 21:52Speaker 10: None?
- 21:53Speaker 9: Didn't go to any of them.
- 21:54Speaker 10: No, I didn't go to any of them.
- 21:56Speaker 11: So does that enjoyed baseball too much to go to
- 22:00Speaker 11: banana ball? I just I know to me, it's it's
- 22:04Speaker 11: pure entertainment. And oh and I salute them. That's an
- 22:09Speaker 11: incredible story about that couple who who bought that team.
- 22:14Speaker 11: They're sleeping on the floor and you know they couldn't
- 22:16Speaker 11: sell a season ticket to practically anybody.
- 22:19Speaker 10: That first year. So I love the business story of that,
- 22:24Speaker 10: but I don't. I don't want to watch it.
- 22:27Speaker 9: It's just not for me, So I did not plan
- 22:30Speaker 9: to go. I went and watched double header over at
- 22:35Speaker 9: the softball and then I guess it was a double header. No,
- 22:42Speaker 9: maybe it's just a long game. I think it was
- 22:43Speaker 9: just a long game. Actually, now that I think about.
- 22:45Speaker 10: It, there was a game. The baseball team was playing.
- 22:48Speaker 9: Baseball team was playing. We were over a softball with
- 22:51Speaker 9: my daughter. She's like, I got an extra ticket, Come
- 22:53Speaker 9: come with me to go to banana ball. So we
- 22:57Speaker 9: took off out of softball and and got over to
- 23:01Speaker 9: Kyle Field as fast as we could. She didn't tell
- 23:04Speaker 9: me where the seats were. So the home plate was
- 23:11Speaker 9: in the northwest corner, right, Okay, I.
- 23:17Speaker 10: Think I could hit it out to the left field,
- 23:18Speaker 10: and that's the situation.
- 23:20Speaker 9: Her seats were two rows.
- 23:24Speaker 10: From the top third deck there.
- 23:27Speaker 9: Yeah, no, I mean literally literally, it was like row
- 23:31Speaker 9: fifty in the third deck. So I'm two rows from
- 23:34Speaker 9: the top in the southwest corner. I would have immediately
- 23:42Speaker 9: walked out, except for I was so exhausted from hustling
- 23:44Speaker 9: up that ramp all the way to the third and
- 23:46Speaker 9: then fifty fifty steps up to the top. I'm like,
- 23:49Speaker 9: I gotta catch my breast.
- 23:50Speaker 10: It's great for the economy. Oh it was awesome.
- 23:52Speaker 11: I would have I had take us to George straight.
- 23:59Speaker 11: Something came up where I couldn't use those tickets. It
- 24:01Speaker 11: was a family issue. I had planned to go to that,
- 24:06Speaker 11: no plans to go soccer, no plans to go to
- 24:09Speaker 11: banana ball.
- 24:09Speaker 10: But I'm all for it because.
- 24:10Speaker 11: What it does for the economy, what it does for
- 24:12Speaker 11: revenue for Texas, A and M do it.
- 24:15Speaker 10: Yeah, it's fantastic.
- 24:17Speaker 9: I really wanted to go to the first soccer game,
- 24:19Speaker 9: and we were planning on going and something else came
- 24:22Speaker 9: up and I didn't want to go. And it wasn't
- 24:24Speaker 9: because I wanted to watch the soccer. I wanted to
- 24:26Speaker 9: see the experience of international soccer. Just hey what, I
- 24:32Speaker 9: know what this stadium is like on a football game day.
- 24:34Speaker 9: I just wanted to see a different experience. I thought
- 24:36Speaker 9: it would have been spectacular.
- 24:37Speaker 10: You know what.
- 24:38Speaker 11: It's been fun. And I haven't watched a bit of
- 24:40Speaker 11: the World Cup either. It's like I told you off
- 24:43Speaker 11: the air's like, hey, I don't watch.
- 24:45Speaker 10: The Winter Olympics, but I do. I look at the
- 24:47Speaker 10: metal comp like I.
- 24:49Speaker 11: Like USA USA, right, And so I know USA has
- 24:53Speaker 11: won both their games, and this coach the USA already
- 24:57Speaker 11: tied as the all time leader in wins and World
- 25:00Speaker 11: Cup for the United States. So I know enough that
- 25:04Speaker 11: without watching I'll listen I'll pay, you know, pay a
- 25:06Speaker 11: little attention. But I love the attention that the United
- 25:11Speaker 11: States of America as a whole is getting from all
- 25:14Speaker 11: these foreigners who are loving life over here. And the
- 25:18Speaker 11: scott Scotland group who came to Fenway Park to watch
- 25:22Speaker 11: Rangers in Red Sox on Sunday Night baseball. They were fantastic.
- 25:26Speaker 11: They were having the time of their lives.
- 25:28Speaker 10: It was NonStop.
- 25:29Speaker 9: He was like, he was the only place left in
- 25:30Speaker 9: town with beer because they drank the rest.
- 25:32Speaker 11: Yeah, and they're actually gonna be in Miami tonight, the
- 25:35Speaker 11: same Scotland groups. So the Rangers and Marlins are playing
- 25:39Speaker 11: down there, so we'll have to see what that's like.
- 25:42Speaker 11: And then these guys are raving on Twitter about this.
- 25:45Speaker 11: One guy was like, he's from Japan and he said,
- 25:48Speaker 11: they brought me his breakfast and it looks like brains
- 25:51Speaker 11: in it looked all this terrible stuff and then oh
- 25:54Speaker 11: my gosh, it's biscuits and gravy and it's heaven.
- 25:58Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 25:59Speaker 11: It's just like I love those stories about people loving
- 26:02Speaker 11: the United States.
- 26:03Speaker 9: And I said earlier me watching the World Cup is
- 26:07Speaker 9: like them coming to discover I don't know any better.
- 26:11Speaker 9: It might it might be a European they went to
- 26:13Speaker 9: Taco bell and think they had Mexican food exactly.
- 26:17Speaker 13: Better.
- 26:18Speaker 9: But if it's tasty, I'm gonna enjoy.
- 26:20Speaker 11: It was a story about some very very famous soccer
- 26:23Speaker 11: players and didn't I know who Messy is.
- 26:26Speaker 10: That's that's the only one. Pelei is he still around?
- 26:30Speaker 10: But the soccer players were talking about, Hey, we went
- 26:32Speaker 10: to Walmart. No one recognizes it was great.
- 26:37Speaker 9: It is just a different world and it's a fun
- 26:39Speaker 9: time right now. But tonight I might check in on
- 26:42Speaker 9: the soccer, but I'm gonna be watching Oh You North Carolina,
- 26:45Speaker 9: because Game three of the College World Series for all
- 26:50Speaker 9: the Marbles is as fun a sport as you can watch,
- 26:55Speaker 9: tension wise, whether you have a dog in the fight
- 26:58Speaker 9: or not.
- 26:59Speaker 10: Well, you know, it's just like it was so recently.
- 27:01Speaker 10: It was three years ago.
- 27:03Speaker 11: My wife and I were there experiencing that, you know,
- 27:06Speaker 11: and it's like so close, you know, A and M
- 27:09Speaker 11: is so close to winning NASS Championship in a sport
- 27:11Speaker 11: that I really deeply care about, and that's not I mean,
- 27:16Speaker 11: I loved it, Like I said, volleyball, I loved it
- 27:19Speaker 11: when Gary Blair won a NASS championship women's basketball.
- 27:22Speaker 10: Pat Henry.
- 27:22Speaker 11: I told him many many times before he's the greatest
- 27:25Speaker 11: coach track and field history, and there's not even.
- 27:27Speaker 10: A close second.
- 27:29Speaker 11: I love what all those guys have done for you know,
- 27:32Speaker 11: the golf team, what they've done.
- 27:34Speaker 10: Love it.
- 27:34Speaker 9: A couple of championships from women's tennis.
- 27:36Speaker 11: Exactly, and that's fantastic because they represent at Texas A
- 27:40Speaker 11: and M school that I love. But the three sports
- 27:43Speaker 11: that matter to me the most, the one I'm most
- 27:46Speaker 11: emotionally invested with. I've never seen him win a NASS championship.
- 27:50Speaker 11: I wasn't around in nineteen thirty nine. People say that
- 27:52Speaker 11: I look old, but I wasn't thirty nine, so I
- 27:57Speaker 11: don't remember that.
- 27:58Speaker 9: It's as close as it's ever been.
- 28:01Speaker 11: I feel feel good about the direction, so that being there,
- 28:06Speaker 11: being that close to see an A and M winn
- 28:08Speaker 11: Nast championship three years ago, that was fun. It's just
- 28:13Speaker 11: to try back though.
- 28:14Speaker 9: It was just a dagger right, not any fun at all.
- 28:18Speaker 9: But I'm looking forward to it tonight with no skin
- 28:20Speaker 9: in the game, just watching OHU North Carolina because it
- 28:26Speaker 9: doesn't matter who's playing. That's some of the best drama.
- 28:29Speaker 10: Yeah, and somebody. You know, it's new. It's it's not
- 28:33Speaker 10: anybody we expected. Right. I saw a m play U
- 28:36Speaker 10: C l A.
- 28:37Speaker 11: I said, you see how he's gonna win NAST championship.
- 28:39Speaker 11: That team is really good.
- 28:41Speaker 10: They didn't even get out.
- 28:42Speaker 9: They had a bad week on the wrong week.
- 28:44Speaker 10: Yeah, it does.
- 28:46Speaker 9: It does happen. And I think that's gonna wrap up
- 28:48Speaker 9: our time here on Chip Howard Sports Talk on a Monday, Rusty,
- 28:51Speaker 9: thank you for coming in, Thank you, and still one
- 28:55Speaker 9: nothing right are they stopped for rain because it looked
- 28:59Speaker 9: like it was pouring. So yeah, we're done with rain, Rusty.
- 29:02Speaker 9: We'll see you next week. Dusty and Rusty for Chip

- 35:44Speaker 23: Let's go to our three two one.
- 35:46Speaker 3: Here they go and left off God.
- 35:50Speaker 21: Now to the Houston Methodist Broadcast booth.
- 35:54Speaker 14: Stros.
- 35:55Speaker 6: Here's Robert Ford and Steve Sparks.
- 35:59Speaker 22: Greetings from the Rogers Center in Toronto, Ontario, where today
- 36:02Speaker 22: the Houston Astros opened up a three game series with
- 36:05Speaker 22: the Toronto Blue Jays. Start up a seven game roachrip
- 36:07Speaker 22: for the Astros that will also take them to Detroit.
- 36:09Speaker 22: They just finished a four and two homestand that ended
- 36:12Speaker 22: with a two to one win over the Cleveland Guardians yesterday.
- 36:15Speaker 22: Kaiwai Tong six innings of one run, ball struck out four.
- 36:18Speaker 22: Yordan Alvarez had a homer. As the Astros have won
- 36:21Speaker 22: four of their last five the Blue Jays. They were
- 36:23Speaker 22: rained out yesterday at Wrigley Field and they wound up
- 36:25Speaker 22: splitting two games with the Cubs over the weekend. The
- 36:29Speaker 22: Blue Jays have won four of their last five Astros
- 36:31Speaker 22: thirty seven and forty two. That puts them in fourth
- 36:34Speaker 22: in the AL West three games behind Seattle, while the
- 36:37Speaker 22: Blue Jays are thirty eight and thirty nine, and that's
- 36:39Speaker 22: good for third place in the AL East, eight and
- 36:41Speaker 22: a half games behind the Yankees. Let's take a look
- 36:44Speaker 22: at today's pitching matchup. It's brought to you by Houston
- 36:46Speaker 22: Methodists Leading Medicine. Well, it's Hunter Brown getting the ball
- 36:49Speaker 22: for the Astros, his second start since coming off the
- 36:52Speaker 22: injured list. Really solid that first time out Tuesday against
- 36:55Speaker 22: the Tigers, giving up a run over five and two thirds.
- 36:57Speaker 20: Yeah, and a real pick me up for the Astros
- 36:59Speaker 20: team waiting for Hunter Brown just to get back, and
- 37:02Speaker 20: I think since they've gotten him back, a little extra
- 37:05Speaker 20: hoping the step and the team starting to play a
- 37:07Speaker 20: little bit better. So Hunter Brown's gonna go out there
- 37:10Speaker 20: against the other team's best pitcher, So this should be.
- 37:12Speaker 10: A great matchup.
- 37:13Speaker 22: Meanwhile, it's still in Cease getting the ball for the
- 37:16Speaker 22: Blue Jays today. He was supposed to start yesterday in Chicago,
- 37:18Speaker 22: but the rain out got pushed to today. He's having
- 37:21Speaker 22: got five scoreless innings in his last start in Boston
- 37:26Speaker 22: when he got the victory in that ball game, and
- 37:28Speaker 22: Seas has been a pretty solid pitcher for a long
- 37:30Speaker 22: time now.
- 37:31Speaker 20: And he's in the prime of his career and he's
- 37:33Speaker 20: still throwing the ball. Great is breaking stuff, curve, slider,
- 37:36Speaker 20: everything is really good still, the fastball super hoppy. So
- 37:40Speaker 20: the Astros have their hands full as far as just
- 37:42Speaker 20: putting the ball in play and stringing some stuff together.
- 37:45Speaker 20: Maybe just take advantage of a mistake and let Hunter
- 37:47Speaker 20: Brown do the rest.
- 37:48Speaker 22: We'll be back with more of Astro launch right after this.

- 40:16Speaker 22: the official daily sports partner of the Houston Astros. Well,
- 40:19Speaker 22: the Astros and Blue Jays kind of in a similar spot,
- 40:21Speaker 22: two teams that have postseason aspirations coming into the year.
- 40:25Speaker 22: But the Blue Jays find themselves a game below five hundred,
- 40:28Speaker 22: the Astros coming in right now at five games below
- 40:32Speaker 22: five hundred. So I'm sure both of these teams see
- 40:35Speaker 22: this series, and really all the series are playing right
- 40:37Speaker 22: now is an opportunity to try and get some momentum
- 40:40Speaker 22: and run off some victories right.
- 40:43Speaker 20: After the last series for the Astros beating the Guardians
- 40:45Speaker 20: two games to one at Dykin Park. The Astros won
- 40:48Speaker 20: the season series against the Guardians. The Astros would love
- 40:51Speaker 20: to say do the same thing with the Toronto Blue Jays.
- 40:54Speaker 20: These two teams might be vying for that third or
- 40:56Speaker 20: second wild card spot, and these are always important. The
- 41:00Speaker 20: Astros won four out of six against the Blue Jays
- 41:02Speaker 20: last year and hopefully get off to a good start tonight.

- 43:47Speaker 22: to try and get the final three outs. Hater is

- 44:00Speaker 22: Astros trying to win their third consecutive series. Oh two,
- 44:05Speaker 22: soya you get a mess. Good morning and after doon
- 44:07Speaker 22: it good night, David Fry and that is the ball
- 44:09Speaker 22: game finished him off on a high fastball as the
- 44:13Speaker 22: Astros finished off the Guardians today, winning two to one.
- 44:16Speaker 22: They take two out of three in the series and
- 44:18Speaker 22: go four and two on their home stand against Detroit
- 44:22Speaker 22: and Cleveland. And welcome back, Joe. You have been talking
- 44:27Speaker 22: about this team needs to go on a roll, needs
- 44:29Speaker 22: to start winning series and coming off a really good
- 44:32Speaker 22: home stand, taking series from a couple of good teams
- 44:36Speaker 22: in Detroit and Cleveland, and took a series to end
- 44:39Speaker 22: your last road ship in Kansas City. So I mean
- 44:40Speaker 22: three series ruins in a row. I mean that's a
- 44:43Speaker 22: pretty good start toward a sustained run.
- 44:45Speaker 30: Yeah, it's a pretty good start. And then you know,
- 44:47Speaker 30: no reasons to get complacent. We got long waits to
- 44:50Speaker 30: go running into another into another good team, the American
- 44:54Speaker 30: League Champions. We're going to face some really good pitching
- 44:57Speaker 30: against a really good offense.
- 44:58Speaker 6: We're playing our best baseball right now, but.
- 45:00Speaker 30: We have to continue to get ready and commit to
- 45:03Speaker 30: being good on both sides of the ball. Our preparation
- 45:05Speaker 30: needs to be there every day and then you know,
- 45:08Speaker 30: we are in a really good spot. The energy is
- 45:10Speaker 30: where he needs to be, but we need to continue
- 45:12Speaker 30: to improve it on the baseball field.
- 45:14Speaker 22: Kywie Tong had a handful of rough ones, but six
- 45:18Speaker 22: innings want to run yesterday against against Cleveland. I mean,
- 45:22Speaker 22: obviously what a really nice bounce back outing for him.
- 45:25Speaker 6: Yeah he was. He was you know, a ton of
- 45:29Speaker 6: lefties he uses. You know, he changed his usage.
- 45:33Speaker 30: A little bit different against that lineup, and he paid off.
- 45:38Speaker 30: You know, we know what he's capable of doing when
- 45:40Speaker 30: he's throwing a ton of strikes, when he's got the
- 45:42Speaker 30: sweeper and the fastball working.
- 45:45Speaker 6: But it was it was a good bounce back. I
- 45:47Speaker 6: know he really wanted it.
- 45:48Speaker 30: He worked really hard to get that done, and we
- 45:52Speaker 30: excited that we we got him back on track.
- 45:54Speaker 22: You know, one thing that should be noted about that
- 45:57Speaker 22: series against the Guardians. Guardians seymore pitches per played appearance
- 46:00Speaker 22: in the offense in baseball, have one of the highest
- 46:03Speaker 22: walk rates in baseball. But over the three game series,
- 46:06Speaker 22: your pitchers walked too, and both of them were in
- 46:08Speaker 22: that game yesterday. I mean, what does that say about
- 46:10Speaker 22: just where this pitching staff has come, because obviously early
- 46:13Speaker 22: in the year that was a huge problem, but it's
- 46:15Speaker 22: something that's gotten better.
- 46:16Speaker 30: Yeah, And and like you mentioned, and you know, that's
- 46:18Speaker 30: a team that they went up there hacking, they were
- 46:21Speaker 30: swinging early in the count. Obviously, we are making a
- 46:26Speaker 30: bigger effort to throw strike one and be in his
- 46:29Speaker 30: zone earlier in account and team not noticing that.
- 46:32Speaker 6: So that's why we got to be competitive.
- 46:35Speaker 30: We strike one can be just laying a pitch, and
- 46:37Speaker 30: the middle of the plays got to be a competitive
- 46:39Speaker 30: pitch that we could get a chase or we could
- 46:42Speaker 30: get a quick out on. And we have done a
- 46:44Speaker 30: tremendous job, not only our starters but our bullpen.
- 46:48Speaker 22: Hunter Brown getting his second start since coming off the IL, obviously,
- 46:53Speaker 22: you know you want to see him just kind of
- 46:55Speaker 22: get further and further from from that il stint and
- 46:58Speaker 22: just get better and better like we've been from him.
- 47:00Speaker 30: Yeah, yeah, yeah, and and and and also uh, you know,
- 47:03Speaker 30: come in here today and first game of a series
- 47:05Speaker 30: he had getting Hunter to set the tone for us,
- 47:09Speaker 30: that's huge. And and you know he's he's got a
- 47:11Speaker 30: few more pitches to work with. He's running into another
- 47:15Speaker 30: really good aggressive offense. They swing early, they put a
- 47:20Speaker 30: ton of balls in play. They they could play small
- 47:24Speaker 30: ball if.
- 47:24Speaker 6: They have to. So it's it's a it's a it's
- 47:27Speaker 6: a really good challenge for Hunter.
- 47:28Speaker 30: And and I just talked to him getting ready for
- 47:30Speaker 30: pull his for these lineup, and he's gonna need he's
- 47:33Speaker 30: gonna need these pitches to be uh, to be working
- 47:37Speaker 30: because he's he needs to mix very well against his
- 47:39Speaker 30: line up.
- 47:40Speaker 22: What do you make of this Blue Jays team? Obviously
- 47:42Speaker 22: went to the World Series last year, took the Dodgers
- 47:44Speaker 22: to seven games a game under five hundred so far
- 47:47Speaker 22: this year almost seemed like kind of in a similar
- 47:49Speaker 22: spot as the Astro is a team that they know
- 47:51Speaker 22: they have some good players, They know they have some talent,
- 47:53Speaker 22: but just hasn't quite come together yet.
- 47:55Speaker 30: Yeah, there's a lot of good teams that are going
- 47:57Speaker 30: through that, you know, playing on the five hundred and
- 48:00Speaker 30: not playing to the capabilities place a long season and
- 48:07Speaker 30: you know, good teams over figuring out the always figure
- 48:09Speaker 30: out a way to do things. And just the same
- 48:12Speaker 30: way we are figuring out how to do things and
- 48:14Speaker 30: get back on track day for trying to figure out
- 48:16Speaker 30: and do things and get back on track. So we're
- 48:18Speaker 30: not taking anny opponent, any opponent lightly. We're here to
- 48:21Speaker 30: control the things that we can control and play good baseball.
- 48:24Speaker 22: All right, Joe spot, Ashra's manager, thanks for joining us
