- 0:00Football Huskies open a three game homestamp Saturday against FIU kick off three thirty tickets
- 0:05available for the game, all remaining home games as well at ukon tickets dot
- 0:09com Ukon Huskies Football. Join us for the reload. And one other thing
- 0:13about the tickets. You can get these two game flex packs, which I
- 0:18think is a great idea. They get these three great games coming up here
- 0:20in September at home by two tickets, two games worth the tickets and get
- 0:25in back to back weeks. I've had people asking me about that, and
- 0:29I know the ticket office working hard to get, you know, people to
- 0:32get on the bandwagon here and support this team. Had a great crowd for
- 0:36the opener against NC State. Obviously want to bring that same crowd back for
- 0:40FIU. We're with Jammuram, Mike Chrispino. Turnovers. We talked about the
- 0:45penalties, turnovers. They seem to be coming it inopportune times, a fumble
- 0:49punt in that Georgia State game, and obviously when when the result isn't what
- 0:54you're hoping for in terms of winning, those things really stick out. What
- 0:58do you do about it? Though? Can you can you say, well,
- 1:00we got to eliminate them obviously, but I wonder how you practice that
- 1:03stuff. Well, we constantly emphasize ball security. It's the first thing we
- 1:08do at the start of spring your training camp and spring ball as we teach
- 1:15ball security and work on it. You know, the first fumble really hurt
- 1:19us. It was a third and long. We pick up enough yarders get
- 1:23us into fourth and one in scoring position. We'd have gone for it,
- 1:26probably got it. Instead we fumble. They get it. Now, our
- 1:30defense goes out and gets to stop. Actually didn't get a stop. We
- 1:32get the ball back on a fumble, and then we miss a field goal.
- 1:36So you know, we had an opportunity there to at least put six
- 1:38up on the board and we got nothing out of it. And that's not
- 1:42okay obviously. You know Brett, who's very sure handed, muffing that punt
- 1:49is very characteristic. You know, put our defense in a tough spot,
- 1:52but we've got to respond. And then you know, the last one,
- 1:56it's into the game and trying to make something happen and you throw the interception
- 2:00and they got nothing out of that. So we were two for three and
- 2:04sudden change on defense and getting stops after takeaways which is good. The problem
- 2:08is is that every time you get you know, you give the ball away.
- 2:12You know, you're eliminating it possible or a potential for yourselves to get
- 2:15a touchdown or a field goal, or flip the field and field position.
- 2:19You're giving the opponent another opportunity. So you stress ball security, you know,
- 2:23constantly stress ball security. When you're we're in stretch, the running backs
- 2:27have ball in their hand, you know, every drill they do, their
- 2:30balls being punched at, trying to get it out. Defensive players are constantly
- 2:32pulling on the ball, tugging on the ball, emphasizing ball security. Four
- 2:38point actually five points of pressure. And you know what to do when you
- 2:40get in traffic. So you know, you drill it, you emphasize it,
- 2:45you practice it, you emphasize it some more, and and that's really
- 2:51all you can do, you know. I mean, we don't ask our
- 2:53players to take a football back to their room and sleep with it. We're
- 2:55gonna ask our players to carry football around the class. I think that would
- 3:00probably look pretty silly, But you know, every time I look out on
- 3:04the field, there's guys out there getting extra working with a football in their
- 3:07hands. So that's that's a positive. Let's get back to the injury thing
- 3:10for just a minute. Alexhnik Uh knock knocked out of the game making a
- 3:16block down. Feel what's his status? How did he come out of that?
- 3:20Uh, it's still being evaluated. He's out for this week. I
- 3:24don't think they have a clear picture yet because of the swelling. But it's
- 3:29certainly not you know, it's not going to be a quick fix. You
- 3:31know, he's going to be out for you know, an extended amount of
- 3:35time. I can't tell you how long I know this. He's he's you
- 3:38know, he's a guy that's gonna work his butt off to get back on
- 3:42the field. I mean, he's going to live in that training room.
- 3:44But I don't think that they have a clear picture yet. I don't think
- 3:47they can get a clear picture yet of exactly what the damage is in there.
- 3:52So when we get that, then then we'll have a much more clear
- 3:54idea of what, you know, the processes for hitting getting him back on
- 3:58the field. Yeah, good news is you got depth of course in that
- 4:01tight end room. And how about Malik Dixon Williams. He's back out on
- 4:04the field with you and obviously he was on the sidelines. Couldn't play on
- 4:09Saturday night? What do you make of his status? Could he play this
- 4:13weekend? He looked good in practice today, and you know, we just
- 4:18have to see how I progresses during the week. I want to see if
- 4:20he swells up at all tomorrow or he saw tomorrow. But you know,
- 4:25based off what I saw today, you know, I think that there's a
- 4:28chance he'll be available for us, which would be a good thing. The
- 4:30guys are he's a really good player and very dependable and has great hands,
- 4:34and is a good tackler and communicates well on all the things you want safeties
- 4:38to do, little X and O thing here. We're going to talk to
- 4:42Stan Cross a little bit later on. He replaced Malik Dixon Williams in the
- 4:45last game. Free safety versus strong safety. You're a dB by nature.
- 4:51Explain that to our listeners because you know, people ask me, well,
- 4:55what's there's two safeties? Which guy does what job? So can you plain
- 5:00that to us? It's different in every system, you know, Like I've
- 5:04been in systems where the strong safety always lines up to the tight end because
- 5:09that's the run strength. They're the strong safety is the guy that you want
- 5:12down kind of as they say in the box, fitting on the run,
- 5:15and the free safety is more of the you know, the guy that plays
- 5:17the middle and romes back there. I've been in systems where the strong safety
- 5:23lines up to the strength of the formation, the passing strength, and the
- 5:26free safety lines up opposite. You know, I've been in systems where they're
- 5:30just left and right safeties. You know, you call them strong and free
- 5:33just because everyone wants you to call them strong and free. You know,
- 5:35if you look at FIU this week, they call theirselves they got a boundary
- 5:42safety and they got a field safety. So you know, boundary free safety,
- 5:46field strong safety. So you know, it's it's different in every in
- 5:50every system. To me, you just want to have two really good safeties
- 5:55that have versatility, that can cover, that can work on in space.
- 6:00It can come up and tackle. And I think you know you're gonna you
- 6:02said you're gonna talk to Stan. I think Stan kind of fits that Bill.
- 6:05You know, Stan's good back deep, he'd come up and can cover
- 6:09a third wide out, he can cover a tight end, he'll fit well
- 6:11in the run, and he has a lot of versatility, which is one
- 6:14of the things that I've always looked for in the safety is versatility. All
- 6:17right, back with Jim Moore just a moment, we're gonna get into FIU
- 6:20as we continue this the Yukon Football Coaches Show on Learfield
