Transcript
- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Spanish with Fexingo! Luna: Hey Lucas! Ready for another episode. What are we learning today? Lucas: So, we already know the verb 'ser' for permanent things. Remember? 'Soy de...' 'Eres...' 'Es...'? Luna: Yeah! 'Soy de México' or 'Él es alto'. That's for describing what something is. Lucas: Exactly. But there's another verb for 'to be' that we use for location and feelings – 'estar'. Let's start with location. Luna: Oh, like 'where you are'? That makes sense. Lucas: Right. So, 'I am at home' is 'Estoy en casa'. Listen: Es-toy en ca-sa. Luna: Estoy en casa. Lucas: Perfect! 'Estoy' is the 'I' form of 'estar'. Can you say 'I am at work'? Luna: Umm... 'Estoy en el trabajo'? Lucas: Yes! 'En el trabajo' – at work. Great job. So 'Estoy en casa' and 'Estoy en el trabajo'. Luna: Got it. So if I want to ask someone where they are, I'd say '¿Dónde estás?'? Lucas: Exactly! '¿Dónde estás?' – Where are you? Let's practice that. Repeat after me: ¿Dónde estás? Luna: ¿Dónde estás? Lucas: And you can answer with 'Estoy en...' plus a place. Like 'Estoy en la cocina'. Luna: Oh, we learned 'la cocina' before! So 'Estoy en la cocina' – I am in the kitchen. Lucas: Yes! Now, 'estar' is also used for temporary states, like how you feel. For example, 'I am fine' is 'Estoy bien'. Luna: Estoy bien. Lucas: And if you're tired, you say 'Estoy cansado'. Listen: Es-toy can-sa-do. Luna: Estoy cansado. Lucas: Great. Note: if you're a woman, you'd say 'Estoy cansada'. But for now, let's practice with these. Luna: So 'Estoy bien' and 'Estoy cansado' – that covers feelings? Lucas: Yep, and 'estar' works for any temporary condition. So let's do a quick practice. I'll ask '¿Dónde estás?' and you answer. Luna: Okay! Ask me. Lucas: ¿Dónde estás? Luna: Estoy en casa. Lucas: Perfect! Now ask me. Luna: ¿Dónde estás? Lucas: Estoy en el trabajo. And how do you feel? 'Estoy bien' or 'Estoy cansado'? Luna: Estoy bien. But maybe after this episode, estoy cansado! Lucas: Aww, well let's keep it light. How about a cute scene? Imagine you call your friend. Luna: Okay, I'll be the friend. You call me. Lucas: Hola Luna, ¿dónde estás? Luna: Estoy en casa. ¿Y tú? Lucas: Estoy en el trabajo. ¿Estás bien? Luna: Sí, estoy bien. Gracias. Lucas: Nice! That's a real conversation. So let's review the phrases: 'Estoy en casa', 'Estoy en el trabajo', 'Estoy bien', 'Estoy cansado', and the question '¿Dónde estás?'. Luna: Okay. So 'estar' is for location and temporary states, and 'ser' is for descriptions and permanent things. Lucas: Exactly. And that's a huge step forward. Let's say them all one more time together. Luna: Sure. Estoy en casa. Lucas: Estoy en casa. Luna: Estoy en el trabajo. Lucas: Estoy en el trabajo. Luna: Estoy bien. Lucas: Estoy bien. Luna: Estoy cansado. Lucas: Estoy cansado. Luna: ¿Dónde estás? Lucas: ¿Dónde estás? Perfect. You nailed it. Luna: Thanks! This is really useful. I can already imagine using it. Lucas: That's the goal. So practice these, and next time we'll explore more 'estar' with other feelings. Luna: Can't wait! Thanks for this episode. Lucas: Thanks for learning with Fexingo. See you next time! Luna: ¡Hasta luego!
