- Sean Graver: You've worked hard for something, you wanted it, you believed in it, and it just didn't work out. So what do you do with that? Well, welcome back to Prayer Before Work. I'm your prayer partner, Sean. So let's look at Romans ⁓ five verses three and four, which says we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope. Now that's not the most comfortable verse I've read lately, but it is true. Career disappointment is real, right? The promotion that went to somebody else, or the deal that fell through, project that got canceled, and all your work was wasted. Maybe it's the job you didn't get. These things hurt, and they're supposed to, right? Glossing over that doesn't help. But here's what I've come to believe about disappointment in the workplace. It's not the end of the story. It's usually a chapter. A hard one, sure, but not the final one. The passage in Romans doesn't say suffering is good. It says something comes from it and through it if we stay in it. It might be endurance or character, and probably hope. Those things are like forged in you, not handed to you. The version of you that comes out on the other side of this disappointment will be more capable, more grounded. ⁓ more resilient than the version of you that went into it. So don't rush past this, but also don't stay stuck in it either. There's still a road ahead. So let's pray. Lord, I'm I'm gonna bring this disappointment to you today. I don't understand it yet, and I'm not gonna pretend I do, but I trust you. Work in this, make something real out of what feels like a loss right now. Help me to keep going. going. I pray in Jesus' name. Amen. Now go make today count.
