- 2:23Hello and welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast, Episode 52,
- 2:27our big 1st birthday, the one year anniversary.
- 2:31We've showed up each and every week for the past year, and
- 2:34we're glad that you have two now.
- 2:37If you're just starting to listen to this episode and
- 2:39you've fast forwarded through the usual introduction, you may
- 2:43want to skip back because there's a bit of a birthday song
- 2:46getting thrown in there this week.
- 2:49And for context, Josh sent in some AI theme tunes for us to
- 2:54mess around with and they were hilarious.
- 2:57And it's it's led to this so we'll we'll put a poll in in the
- 3:01Spotify and you can vote yes or no as to how absolutely tragic
- 3:07or hilarious it was. I don't know what to expect, but
- 3:11it might be a reality check. Anyway, boys, how are we doing?
- 3:15I'm. Doing good little update.
- 3:19It's still raining here in Ireland and no, I'm feeling
- 3:24good, feeling that. Have to be on with you guys.
- 3:27Did you? There was that post on Instagram
- 3:29we shared earlier in the week about like the UK has had rain
- 3:34somewhere like every single day since some point in 2025 and
- 3:38you're feeling the most of that too.
- 3:41Yeah, I genuinely haven't seen the sun in like 6 weeks since
- 3:46Valencia has rained every single day where I am anyway in 2026.
- 3:52Umm yeah, seasonal depression is a real thing, like motivation
- 3:55level. It's like it's just hard to get
- 3:56out in the morning when it's pitch black and it's cold and
- 3:59just rain and umm force yeah. So kudos to all the people still
- 4:04again and getting out there 'cause it is really, really hard
- 4:07and you only like after being in Australia, like you actually
- 4:10don't appreciate how easy it is to get out.
- 4:12Just stick on AT shirt or a singlet and run by the beach.
- 4:15Umm, it's, it's hard over here in Ireland.
- 4:20Have you been taking vitamin D supplements at all through the
- 4:23winter? Yeah, so before I started,
- 4:25before I went to Australia, I never took a vitamin D
- 4:28supplement. But since I've come home, I've
- 4:31been taking them every single day because like January, we
- 4:34have not seen the sun in ages. Yeah, you sort of have to or
- 4:39else you will be deficient in vitamin DI, know when you get a
- 4:44blood test over here, they used to like automatically test for
- 4:48vitamin D, but they've just stopped that now because they've
- 4:51just accepted that everyone in Ireland is deficient.
- 4:53Basically everyone should be on a vitamin D supplement.
- 4:57Just on on that, I had a catch up with sports stock on Friday
- 5:02and it was suggested that there might be some new research out
- 5:06where you combine consumption of calcium rich food with the
- 5:10taking of your vitamin D tablet and she suggested I do it ahead
- 5:14of my long run. So yeah, that's what I'm doing
- 5:18because farm was a bit low in winter, but I haven't had it
- 5:22tested recently, but I assume it's probably picked up because
- 5:24we've I've got a bit of the sun recently.
- 5:28Like I can only imagine if yours was low in an Australian winter,
- 5:32what the hell is it like for everyone in Ireland and the UK?
- 5:36And so wait, what's that? You take your vitamin D?
- 5:39Vitamin D tablet with a source of calcium.
- 5:42Yeah, I said, do I just take like a longer coffee and she's
- 5:44like coffee or cheese or something like that.
- 5:47But yeah, yeah, combining them, she said improves absorb.
- 5:51Yeah, a bit like I think is it orange juice and like vitamin C
- 5:56and iron absorption? I think they're the same.
- 5:59So that was his recommendation. She's like as long as it doesn't
- 6:03cause any GI distress before you go for your long run.
- 6:05But apparently there's, there's been some, there must be some
- 6:08new evidence out that talks to it.
- 6:12But yeah. There's all sorts of intricacies
- 6:15like that with different supplements, isn't there?
- 6:17Like it's not just taking the supplements, it's taking it in
- 6:22and around food and different types of food to ensure it gets
- 6:26digested and into the bloodstream properly.
- 6:28Because I was looking at that like the nitrate stuff last
- 6:31week, as you both know, and there was there was something
- 6:37saying around like if you use mouthwash either before or after
- 6:41you've taken it, it blocks the pathways so you can't get it
- 6:44into your bloodstream. The RJ superstack I can't wait
- 6:49to to get myself get my hands on.
- 6:52It across the ground so it'll it'll give us insights there as
- 6:55well as run through the results from top to bottom.
- 6:58British indoors happened, Perth track classic sound invites in
- 7:02the US, Barcelona half, Seville Marathon, Kipyegon was on the
- 7:08roads and there's also some indoors in Boston.
- 7:11So yeah, we'll see how far we get through that.
- 7:14The lads have been saying about needing to have a quick episode,
- 7:17so let's try and make it punchy and quick fire and I'll try and
- 7:21avoid chatting shit about irrelevant things.
- 7:27All right then Eric, we'll start with armour.
- 7:30Ohm was there. Give us a summary of your week.
- 7:34No, like full training week, but just lead into it, yeah.
- 7:37Yeah, so when I hopped off on the recording on last Monday, I
- 7:43didn't really know if I was going to be racing or not.
- 7:46I ran that evening, Monday evening, just some like 30
- 7:50minutes to see how I was feeling and felt all right, to be
- 7:53honest. So Tuesday we had a little
- 7:56session, so I don't 15 minute warm up, 3 by 3 minutes off 60.
- 7:59And then again, my heart, it was truly rude from this one.
- 8:03So it worked out like 9 K at 4:15 Facebook, the three minutes
- 8:08I was trying to hit that like 3 O 6310 between that range per
- 8:13kilometer. And again, I just felt so bad.
- 8:16I'm like I was fixated like sort of on my watch and I was like,
- 8:22alright, I'm not running our math had a call with my with my
- 8:27coach that afternoon and I was like, look, I don't think I
- 8:31like, I don't feel good. I'm not, I'm not like my heart
- 8:34was to the roof and he was like, OK on.
- 8:36But like, how did it actually feel when you were running?
- 8:39Like did it feel comfortable? And I was like, you know, I
- 8:42actually don't know, but I was so paranoid on the watch and the
- 8:45hard right. I was like, I actually don't
- 8:46know how I felt. And he was like, all right, just
- 8:49try something Wednesday morning until you get on.
- 8:53So Wednesday morning I done another little session.
- 8:57I don't 5 minute threshold, 19 a break, 3 minute threshold, 60
- 9:02minute break and two-minute threshold. 62nd break.
- 9:06Oh, 62nd break. Sorry, sorry.
- 9:07Yeah, yeah. And I didn't look at the watch,
- 9:10literally just went by feel and I actually felt pretty smooth
- 9:14and that heart rate was still through the roof, but I was
- 9:17hitting like 3O63O3 and I was feeling smooth.
- 9:23So that's when I made the call Wednesday morning.
- 9:26Alright I'll give an hour ago but I'm nothing to lose and I
- 9:30felt good so. Was your can I ask, was your
- 9:33heart rate elevated otherwise, like during the day, was your
- 9:37resting heart rate or? It's normal, which is really
- 9:40weird but this is the thing with the heart rate manner so I well
- 9:45I changed the battery on it there like 2 weeks ago so and a
- 9:49lot of them go with the AY when you change the.
- 9:51Battery, they go to shit. Yeah, they can.
- 9:54So. Like I even like now today like
- 9:57I noticed my heart rate is a good like 10/15/20 beats higher
- 10:01than it usually is. So, and it might be hard because
- 10:05I'm feeling perfect. Hmm, interesting.
- 10:09Yeah, your heart rate can vary when it's a bit fresher.
- 10:12When you're a bit fresher as well, like that could be.
- 10:15Yeah, part of it too, but it's not normally a whole zone
- 10:18different though. No, like it's probably the one.
- 10:23Although, yeah. Yeah, yeah, and but anyway,
- 10:26yeah. So anyway, Wednesday morning
- 10:28made the choice. Yeah, I'm going to run our map
- 10:30Thursday. So Thursday morning got out for
- 10:33a little shake out, just 30 minutes and 6.7 K 420 fives and
- 10:37felt good. And then I got 1/2 day in work.
- 10:41But actually, but all this week I went to a shop, a running shop
- 10:45on the Sunday and got them beat it shots.
- 10:49So I had five of them. So I was loading them up every
- 10:51day. On.
- 10:52The on the Tuesday, no so far. So one on town, one on Sunday,
- 10:581:00 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.
- 11:01And like on the Tuesday I was like, am I just wasting these if
- 11:05I'm not running? But I was like, I forgot.
- 11:07I may as well just take them anyway.
- 11:08And so yeah, loaded them up the hallway up until Thursday and I
- 11:12had 1/2 day on Thursday. So I worked out till one and
- 11:15then at around half four, I might drove, started to drive up
- 11:18to our map and yeah, halfway out to our map was pulled over at
- 11:24some food around 3 1/2 hours out.
- 11:27Drove on a little bit, 3 hours out.
- 11:30Then I took my last beta shot. I took my Namio shot and then
- 11:37drove on another bit. Guess where I'm took my bike out
- 11:40of two hours out and I I started and you know the Bix caffeine
- 11:46electrolyte tablets. I think they're cola flavor.
- 11:51I sipped on one of them the whole way up as well and just
- 11:56took the caffeine told my bike cabin I'll got my number and
- 12:01then yeah, done my usual the usual warm up and like the city
- 12:07of our mind. I don't really know the layout
- 12:09but slightly on this like green Oval in the middle of the city
- 12:14and the loop is 1030 meters long so there's a load of kid raises
- 12:19on before. And I just say in the like, I
- 12:23remember seeing this stream on YouTube years ago, like, had you
- 12:26have you seen it as well? Then learn like learned of its
- 12:30history and the depth. And were you familiar with the
- 12:32rows? I was familiar with the depth,
- 12:35but I've never seen it before. I've never seen the race before.
- 12:38So you haven't watched the like a a stream of it on on YouTube?
- 12:42No, no, I'll get out. Yeah, yeah, because they
- 12:47normally, yeah, they normally cover the race and and the the
- 12:50finishing shoots like then they pan they've they've followed the
- 12:53the race follows the league group and then it just then
- 12:56there's like a steel frame over the finishing shoot showing the
- 13:00finishes like and so and, and I just remember watching it the
- 13:03first time and it blowing my mind because I'm just like what
- 13:06what is this like other worldly? Yeah.
- 13:11So yeah, there's a great atmosphere around the city.
- 13:15Loads, kid raises on. Before I got my usual warm up
- 13:18done. So in the park I just done a few
- 13:20laps and I think it worked out like 15 minutes.
- 13:22And then I've done my usual threshold strides.
- 13:24So 90 seconds on, 60 seconds off, 90 seconds on and all this,
- 13:28I'm feeling good. Then 15 minutes out I took a bit
- 13:33caffeine gel and yeah, lined up and.
- 13:40Sorry, do you? I thought you weren't.
- 13:42So you've taken a bit of caffeine here.
- 13:44I didn't think you're big on the on taking caffeine.
- 13:47No, because I remember when I was in Spain, I got these
- 13:50fucking caffeine tablets and then I had a session and I had
- 13:54the worst session of my life. Yeah.
- 13:56So I was like, no, never doing it again.
- 13:59Force. I don't know if I was.
- 14:01I was cooking in Spain as well, so I don't know if it was that,
- 14:04but yeah. So I tried the biggest caffeine
- 14:06tablets, it the electrolyte. And then I had a bit of caffeine
- 14:10in the, in the energy gel as well.
- 14:13And then they put you into waves.
- 14:16So there's the waves. So they actually put a lot of
- 14:19trust in you that you'll go on the right wave.
- 14:21So there's obviously the big guys, the elites and there's
- 14:24like a, it's like a country race as well.
- 14:26So Ireland had a team, Northern Ireland had a team, Scotland had
- 14:29a team, Wales had a team, the UK had a team.
- 14:32I mean, England had a team and I think Sweden had a team.
- 14:35Loads of Swedes were there. So all them were on the front.
- 14:39And I think I was like the third ways back and yeah, the start is
- 14:44chaos. Gun goes, whistle goes and it's
- 14:48chaos. And there's a lot of like push
- 14:51in and you're just like arms it in front trying to stop yourself
- 14:53and fall. And and there's this one in
- 14:55front to me and actually like to jump on.
- 14:57He fell. So seen it like it's slow
- 15:00motion. He was like his stride was
- 15:02getting longer and longer and longer and he was just falling
- 15:05and falling and falling. And yes, so he hit the ground
- 15:08pretty hard. But yeah, so went out and that
- 15:13you sort of, you're forced to clearly go fast if you get me,
- 15:16because everyone around you was just flying.
- 15:18So I think my first K was like 247, high 248.
- 15:24And I looked at the watch down and I was like, OK, not looking
- 15:27at it again, just go with this feeling good.
- 15:29Just shut off. Yeah.
- 15:32So basically you just whip around, keep on doing laps.
- 15:35It's actually hard enough to count the laps.
- 15:38I don't know. My track mats is so shit.
- 15:41So but I went so I went around like twice and then my third
- 15:45time going around, I actually seen someone with a sign holding
- 15:48number laps You'd left. I was like, thank God I've seen
- 15:50that because you can just judge your your finish better and
- 15:53constantly. And is it, is it like right
- 15:56angle turns or are they sort of banks like how sharp was it?
- 16:01Can't remember. It's not too sharp.
- 16:04It's not too sharp and but like for the first lap, you're sort
- 16:07of relying on people around you to keep you up and.
- 16:12And the lighting, because it's pitch black, right?
- 16:15Yeah, so the street lights and then there's like these fairy
- 16:17lights on trees. It's it's it's a really cool
- 16:20atmosphere. That's cool.
- 16:22You know, sometimes even like when you jog and like to be
- 16:25fair, I literally hardly ever run in the dark.
- 16:27But when you do run in the dark, I got like this almost like an
- 16:32adrenaline rush. And if I would plan to run at
- 16:35like 4:45, I'll end up running 430 is just because I don't
- 16:39know, you're almost like on edge a little bit.
- 16:41It's dark and you did you feel like that don't know, kind of
- 16:45like elevated you a little bit. I sort of didn't even take in
- 16:49the atmosphere. I was just so focused on like
- 16:52just person had me. I just didn't.
- 16:55You didn't don't even really get to take it in.
- 16:57Apparently there's like the there was these like fire flames
- 17:00that shoot up at the finish again, didn't even see them or
- 17:03anything. You're just so blinker eyed like
- 17:06concentrate on the people idea. And like I think I started off
- 17:10108 so I was 108 fastest coming into this race on paper.
- 17:16So yeah, the last just take by a bit of the the like tarmac
- 17:21concrete is a bit uneven. That's one thing I noticed,
- 17:23especially in the Super shoes. And so you sort of have to like
- 17:26watch your foot in a little bit and on one side there's like an
- 17:30uphill, so there's a wee little pole up the top and then you
- 17:33whip around and then you go downhill.
- 17:38Yeah anyway, done that constantly picking people off.
- 17:41Loads of people went out super, super hard.
- 17:43And so once you've sort of half gauge your effort, you're going
- 17:45to be pulling people in and then ends up running them fourteen O
- 17:519, which like still, I sort of, I sort of can't really like
- 17:55believe it and never thought I'd be able to like run that fast.
- 17:59And especially with the week, I had to realize it was probably a
- 18:02blessing in the skies. I was super, super fresh coming
- 18:04in and I wasn't expecting anything.
- 18:08Yeah, still like, yeah, 1409 is a crazy time to be able to say
- 18:13around. So yeah, I'm delighted.
- 18:15Was there, was there any point in the race where you were like,
- 18:19shit, yeah, I'm on now, like let's go.
- 18:21Or we're kind of like on edge the whole way thinking like
- 18:24fuck, this could go either way. Literally I looked on my watch
- 18:28and I've seen the 247 high first splash and they didn't look at
- 18:32it again. I didn't have a clue.
- 18:34Like I felt I was going fast but I had no idea I was on like 1409
- 18:40pace. So especially with the week,
- 18:43like I hadn't a clue where I was.
- 18:47So yeah, it's a crazy place. I recommend everyone to go to
- 18:50our Mark. And are you going through the
- 18:53field during that or are you just literally tucked in a
- 18:55train? So at the start you're tucked in
- 18:58a train and you're just literally just stay in port.
- 19:00But then after like the second or third lap, it sort of starts
- 19:03to free up and you sort of find your place.
- 19:05And then you're just pulling people in the whole time.
- 19:08Like if you, that person goes flying past you and boss no,
- 19:11you're just constantly reeling people in like in groups as
- 19:15well. It is, I remember on the last
- 19:17lap, umm, I think it was like 600 to go.
- 19:20I sort of, I was going to go but umm, I sort of got chopped.
- 19:23Like someone cut my stride and then you go around the 2 bands
- 19:27and then it's the home straight which is all downhill.
- 19:29Umm, so I was going to go earlier.
- 19:31Umm, so that's I think there is. I want to say there's more
- 19:36there, but umm, again, like 1409.
- 19:39I cannot complain with that. Yeah, 34th.
- 19:44The only 34th though, which is the annoying thing.
- 19:47Like 1409 is a good time, but no one likes con 34.
- 19:51Like you want to be up at the top of them, boys.
- 19:54To think you were You're a man, Naran.
- 19:56As to whether to even get to the start line or not and you come
- 19:59away with that. That's the thing, like if I
- 20:01listened to my watch, like I wouldn't have run like only for
- 20:05that. Call my coach Shane on.
- 20:06How did you actually feel? Because like people, you're so
- 20:10like, it's so data-driven and all this stuff.
- 20:12You sort of take the feeling out of it.
- 20:14Yeah. You can't rely on the watch too
- 20:17much. Congratulations.
- 20:21Anyway, how much of A PB? 21 seconds.
- 20:26Yeah, day one. Is that you and Brady have the
- 20:30exact same PB now? See 1409 as well.
- 20:33Is he? Think so?
- 20:39Well, go on then. What happened off the top of the
- 20:41places you finished 34th? What happened in the top couple?
- 20:45Yeah, so the top couple, Nick Griggs kicked out, kicked
- 20:49everyone he ran. He won it in 1337.
- 20:52Matthew Ramson from the UK ran 1339.
- 20:57And then third was Callum Morgan, who trains with Nick
- 20:59Griggs. He around 1339 as well.
- 21:01Again, just to come in and droves like some ridiculous.
- 21:06Did you get how many people finished under 14?
- 21:09Was there 20 people to finish under 14?
- 21:13Something like that anyway. And I'll see Mantorp who's
- 21:16trained in the middle of the marathon block here around 1339
- 21:19as well. And then Cormac Dalton around
- 21:211341. There's a big 10K on this
- 21:24weekend, I think in Spain. I'm Grin's running in a Cormac
- 21:27Dolphins running in it as well. So that's on the loud side.
- 21:31And the women's, did you get the women's?
- 21:33No, I'll look for the women's 3K.
- 21:36It is there, sorry. Oh yeah, Oh yeah.
- 21:39Women's tree kite, Emily Haggard Kearney ran at nine O 7.
- 21:44Danielle Donegan, who is going out with Darren Mcclaney, that's
- 21:51a super running couple, 9-12. And she had a Sprint finish with
- 21:55Louis Shannon and she ran 913. So yeah, it's a staffed race.
- 22:00It's so fast, the atmosphere. It's sort of like the Valencia
- 22:03of Ireland. It's like make for running fast
- 22:06except it pissed rain and it was freezing cold.
- 22:12What are you doing? Are you staying over there or
- 22:14you just drive back straight after the race?
- 22:16Oh fucking drove back and go home at like 12:00.
- 22:20But I didn't know loads of people.
- 22:22I think they put people up in a hotel over there.
- 22:23So next year I might try and if I'm running I might try and get
- 22:26put up in a hotel, get the day off.
- 22:29Also, yeah, driving an hour and a half walk and then driving
- 22:31like driving up isn't that bad. It's just driving home it is so
- 22:34shit. It's pitch black pissing rain
- 22:37and it's like the rain is a coming at you.
- 22:39It's like sleety snowy shit because it was so cold to coming
- 22:42at you when you're driving. It's just, it's not fun
- 22:46stopping. Like they've got my first
- 22:47McDonald's and I don't know how long and it still tastes like
- 22:49shit. Finally, he's let his hair down.
- 22:54Yeah, I couldn't believe it. Lastly, just before we move on
- 22:59from that, I know there was a couple of listeners there as
- 23:02well. Adam Nason broke 15 minutes and
- 23:04so did Joe Bowden. I think Adam was 1457, maybe in
- 23:09Joe 1451. So great runs from them as well.
- 23:13I know Joe was trying to seek you out afterwards, but I don't
- 23:17think he found you it. Was so hard to find anyone
- 23:20because it's packed. It was a no Connor Rogers.
- 23:25We don't need YouTube Diaries on them.
- 23:26The Welsh guy had, he was at this point in running the 5K, he
- 23:30lasted 2K, dropped out with stomach cramps and then he hops
- 23:33into 3K and he comes fifth in the 3K.
- 23:37So I was trying to him after and he's got this 10K coming up as
- 23:41well. So he'll bounce back fairly
- 23:42quick. But Jack Gray from fly carp, he
- 23:44came 10th in 30 and 48, which is again, phenomenal.
- 23:49Going solid and swinging, not bad.
- 23:54Seeing him on the stream, you know, like the finish line
- 23:57camera, you just see him, Moser and all.
- 23:59Yes, the air movement. Is crazy and rice earlier on I
- 24:05alluded to the fact we may have a special guest joining with us
- 24:09and said special guest has arrived.
- 24:12So I didn't let the listeners know who it was who was going to
- 24:15be joining. So I'm sure they'll be thrilled
- 24:17to find out that Matt Sutton from the the Sunday Blog cast is
- 24:22joining us to give his expert insight on everything British
- 24:26athletics and very well timed given what's going on at the
- 24:28weekend. Welcome to the show, Matt.
- 24:31How are you doing? Very well boys, cheers for
- 24:33having me on. I know we're paying them a
- 24:35favour. It's great to have you on our
- 24:36podcast last week, Ryan. Yeah, just enjoy listening to
- 24:40you as breakdown of Armagh there.
- 24:41I think that's I had a few run and that's exactly kind of where
- 24:45their head was at. And it's just it's a magical
- 24:47race, isn't it? So I was pleased you and got PB.
- 24:52Yeah, it's it seems like it's absolutely wild.
- 24:55Dean and I are so isolated over here in Australia that I mean,
- 24:59if all goes to plan for me, I'm not sure I'll ever make it over
- 25:02there. But we it's definitely one on
- 25:04the list because I know like a lot of people from where I'll
- 25:08come from in like Liverpool MERS side area travel over.
- 25:12So it is one there's ones people make the effort for, isn't.
- 25:16It. Yeah.
- 25:17I mean, what do you guys do for sort of high calibre 5 KS, even
- 25:21sort of 10 KS half marathons? Is there is it that much
- 25:24opportunity for you to go and RIP a PB multiple times a year?
- 25:31Not not as much like it. Well, as far as 5K races go, I
- 25:36wouldn't say there's a heap of like domestic 5K races that are
- 25:40particularly deep. I think 10 half marathon that 10
- 25:44KS and half marathons there are, but more on the East Coast of
- 25:47Australia. So that's like we've got to hop
- 25:49on the minimum of one flight if we can get a direct flight to
- 25:53the city that's hosting the race.
- 25:55But places like like Tassie, like Hobart, Launceston, like
- 26:03Melbourne have a couple of particularly fast 10K or half
- 26:06marathon races. So we would go to those if we
- 26:09were looking for ones that have a field, but nothing that really
- 26:12compares to something like Amar. I would say if we are looking
- 26:17for similar depth, the closest thing for us is Japan's an 8
- 26:22hour flight and it's the same time zone.
- 26:24So those Japanese races are, are unbelievable.
- 26:28And that's actually how when Ryan and I all came to be came
- 26:32to meet was we were we all trained up for 1/2 marathon that
- 26:36was run a couple of weeks ago in Japan and Marigami half.
- 26:40So yeah, we decided to hop on a plane for that.
- 26:44Sick God that's a difficult AR journey just to get just to
- 26:49shoot for 1/2 marathon PV. Yeah, that's right.
- 26:53So when we we can't really talk too much about weather on the
- 26:56podcast without Owen getting filthy, And then when Owen talks
- 26:58about the hour and a half drive home he had from one of the best
- 27:02races in the world, I, you know, I'm like, oh, Paul Bugger.
- 27:05Yeah. Yeah, the self-proclaimed
- 27:09fastest 5K in the world, that's what they're going with, isn't
- 27:12it? So yeah, you're lucky, Owen, I
- 27:16think. Last place, last place.
- 27:17We've got M16, like 35 or something.
- 27:21It's just crazy. That's.
- 27:22Cool. It's certainly the deepest,
- 27:23certainly the deepest 5K for yeah, for that level.
- 27:28Right, Maths time is of a premium, we've only got them for
- 27:31a short amount of time, so let's get into it.
- 27:33I don't know Matt, how do you want to do it?
- 27:35Have you got anything highlights that stand out to you, you want
- 27:38to speak about or should we go through results?
- 27:40We can we can nail results. I don't know how much of the
- 27:43British Champs you guys watched or, or anything like that, but
- 27:47for us, we have great races. You know, the British champs
- 27:51always, there's always those athletes who have got the
- 27:53qualifying standard, they want to put their place on the plane
- 27:56to the world indoors, etcetera. But for me, the British champs
- 27:59is, and I don't know if it's becoming more and more common.
- 28:03It's lacking depth. And you have those who want to
- 28:06get their spot on the plane and you have those who turn up to
- 28:09the British champs for experience.
- 28:11And then all of those athletes in the middle ground, basically
- 28:13all of those athletes who were probably in our mile with with
- 28:16Joanne aren't, aren't there. And for one reason or another, I
- 28:20think an interesting debate is why they don't, why they aren't
- 28:23present and why they avoid British Champs.
- 28:25And is there much to run for for them?
- 28:28They know they're not going to necessarily meddle.
- 28:29They might scrape the final. And unfortunately, I just think
- 28:33finishing 7th, 8th place at the British Champs doesn't carry
- 28:35that much weight. You know, for example, your PB
- 28:38carries a lot more weight and says more about you as an
- 28:40athlete than where you place at British Champs.
- 28:42And so I think the sport's a bit of a crossroads there, but that
- 28:46was one of my biggest takeaways from British champs.
- 28:48The racing was great. We could talk through results,
- 28:50absolutely. Were you on the ground?
- 28:54I was watching from afar. Actually I was, I was at home, I
- 28:57was watching on TV. The British University
- 28:59Championships was the same day and some of the finals
- 29:03overlapped as well, so I was kind of consuming it all on on
- 29:06screens. And Matt, just on that point
- 29:10you're picking up in terms of because I know like when we say
- 29:13it from afar, there seems to be a bit of controversy around
- 29:16selection and the application of British of selection policy when
- 29:19it comes to British British Athletics.
- 29:20So with the the seemingly discretionary elements of the
- 29:25policy, is that why people are potentially just a bit hesitant
- 29:28to rock up to some of these races unless they know they're
- 29:30going to post a time? 100% I think you know it.
- 29:35It's, it doesn't mean as much even if you win British champs
- 29:38now that we had some great upsets.
- 29:40But unfortunately those people who overcame the odds and won
- 29:45the races, they, they won't go to the warning doors.
- 29:47The selection policy is becoming more and more grey.
- 29:51Effectively there are multiple ways to qualify for the World
- 29:55Championships now. Indoors, it'll be the same
- 29:57outdoors at Europeans I'm sure. And it's just British athletics
- 30:00covering their backs. They just want to cover all
- 30:02bases. If they have an athlete that
- 30:04they want to, you know, somehow get into the championships and
- 30:07get on the plane, they can, you know, then there's it's, you
- 30:10know, it's in a policy. So they can't, can't have people
- 30:12come at them and try and sue them, etcetera.
- 30:14So I think that's that's a real shame about our championships.
- 30:20Because that was very much the case as well in Tokyo, wasn't
- 30:23it? Like we've seen, I can't
- 30:24remember which way around it was, but through the 10K and the
- 30:27marathon there was like was only a male crash represented GB
- 30:31across the whole combined distances.
- 30:34And then we had someone that was formerly, well, someone with a
- 30:37British accent running for Uruguay who grew up in America,
- 30:41I think meddling at those said chance.
- 30:43So it just, I don't know, it just doesn't seem to make a lot
- 30:46of sense to me in terms of why and also just the influence.
- 30:50Why do why does it the administrators seem to have such
- 30:53a an influence over athletes who are Because a lot of these
- 30:57athletes are qualifying for these World Championships but
- 30:59aren't selected to participate. Just doesn't make a lot of
- 31:02sense. Yeah, Look, I think the
- 31:03selection policy has put athletes off full stop from even
- 31:06entertaining the idea of track. One of the it's not a problem,
- 31:10but one of the things that is occurring more and more in our
- 31:12sport is people are moving to the road sooner and sooner.
- 31:15I think it's more enjoyable for them.
- 31:16They do their own races, they they run great times.
- 31:19They can sign a bigger contract with brands and we're losing a
- 31:23lot of for athletes in their prime over 5K.
- 31:28We're losing them to the roads straight up.
- 31:30You know, you especially on our men's and and our women's side,
- 31:33to be honest, we've got a lot of men who could probably if they
- 31:35were to stick at the 5K for two or three years, they could run
- 31:38thirteen O 5, they could run 1310.
- 31:40They'll never give themselves the chance because they're just
- 31:42moving straight to the half straight to the marathon.
- 31:45And one of the reasons for that is it's too difficult to
- 31:47qualify. You know, they just don't even
- 31:49want to get involved in a track season of pressure and maybes if
- 31:55they can get on that plane. You raised a few points there
- 32:00earlier, one of them about athletes kind of like finishing
- 32:05midway down the field that British champs like, what does
- 32:09it really mean? One of the things which stood
- 32:11out to me this weekend was like, maybe this time last year, if
- 32:15not the year before, Joe Wickfield potentially would have
- 32:18been not getting out of the heat, so not making a final and
- 32:22in his preferred distance of 800 meters.
- 32:25Or maybe he's given 1500 meters a crack.
- 32:27And now here he has quickly moved up to the half marathon.
- 32:30And yeah, he's he's on to bigger and better things.
- 32:34That's it. And that's exactly what's
- 32:36happening time and time again. It does.
- 32:38It probably doesn't help as good as you know, Jake Wyman, Josh
- 32:41Kerr, Neil Collies, good to see these guys are.
- 32:44It probably doesn't benefit those trying to breakthrough and
- 32:48you know, because they know that for the next even I mean, look,
- 32:51Josh Kerjay Wyman and Neil Gauli Elliot Giles, maybe that's been
- 32:54our BIG4. They've gone through every
- 32:56championship for the last 7-8 years.
- 33:00Yes, it I mean, I remember the morning 2019 and do a guitar so
- 33:03and even Europeans in in 2018 actually.
- 33:06So and they've just taken the spots and whether whether
- 33:09Whiteman is ill on the day the trials doesn't turn out.
- 33:11There's still a spot reserved for him.
- 33:13He'd had meddling at majors. So they get an auto, auto spot
- 33:16as far as British athletics are concerned.
- 33:18So that probably doesn't help our development in the 1500.
- 33:21And then when it comes to the 5K and the 10K, those times are so
- 33:25incredibly hard and there's no reward for getting those times.
- 33:29Financially, it's a difficult place for an athlete to commit
- 33:33to pursuing a career on the track.
- 33:37As a fan of athletics, would you what would you think if they
- 33:41went down the the UK adopted the same approach as the US in terms
- 33:46of the top three of the trials get to go?
- 33:49It would certainly make things a lot more exciting around our
- 33:52championships. I I think our championships has
- 33:54been flat for a number of years. And one of the big reasons for
- 33:58that is because you watch it and you know, what you're watching
- 34:02actually isn't going to change anything.
- 34:04You know, if, if someone wins, like Sarah Calvert won, but
- 34:08unfortunately doesn't have the standard so won't go, they've
- 34:11reserved a spot for, you know, Georgia Bell, if she's in it, it
- 34:14could be a different event. That's kind of what happened
- 34:16this year. And so it it would, it would
- 34:19certainly be bring more weighting to the Champs, more of
- 34:22like a wow factor in that sense. But again, the way the sport is
- 34:27with standards and stuff is difficult.
- 34:29It's it's what frustrates me because I would much rather the
- 34:32standard be slower and actually just focus on the pure racing
- 34:36and celebrate those who have beaten people who have 5 second
- 34:40better performance over them over 1500, let's say.
- 34:43But that's just where we are. I what I looked at your opinion
- 34:48on Keely Hodgkinson. So she makes to effort, she goes
- 34:51there, she runs the heat, runs an unbelievable time, but then
- 34:55doesn't run the final. Like I just, I don't get it.
- 35:00Yeah, I guess people have mixed opinions.
- 35:02A lot of a lot of Brits are supporting Keely in this one
- 35:05because they're like they want to see Keely go and break a
- 35:07world record. She's going to line up on
- 35:09Thursday night on the world tour in France and she's looking
- 35:14brilliant, right? She's looking like she will go
- 35:17and break that record. She's only got to knock what, .5
- 35:20of a second off. But for me and, and part of the
- 35:23reason she's did, she's not doing the final was because you
- 35:27know, it affects her, her build up for that world record
- 35:29attempt. I just think that's a real
- 35:33shame. We had Izzy Buffy who'd run 157
- 35:35this year and we could have had a great match up.
- 35:36We could have had a great race, you know, get the British public
- 35:39on boards, but instead we had a procession and instead there's a
- 35:44cloud over the Champs and and Keely arguably probably takes
- 35:46the headlines with 156 and not and not running the final for
- 35:50me. You're a professional.
- 35:53Surely you would just if you need a race to tune up for a
- 35:55world record attempt, surely you'd do it outside of a British
- 35:57Championships. But then the flip side is you
- 36:00wanted to line up at the British Championships and and show her
- 36:02face, which I get as well. How much more effort would a
- 36:05final taken out of Keely? Yeah, I, I don't think any at
- 36:09all. You know, she could have run, I
- 36:11mean, it was 205 for these women's to qualify in the final.
- 36:13By the way, she could have run a 205204205, jogging, run a 158 in
- 36:18the final, beaten Buffy, great race and then gone on.
- 36:21I don't think that would have affected her world record
- 36:23chances. But I'm, you know, I'm not a
- 36:25world class coach and, you know, and I'm sure there was reasons
- 36:29for it, but I just think it it it encouraged the wrong press
- 36:34and the wrong media attention. And in all Keely, I mean, it
- 36:38was, you know, Georgia obviously dropped out last minute, which
- 36:40was a shame. And Josh Kerr dropped out last
- 36:42minute as well. He said he didn't travel well
- 36:45and had a slight niggle and a slight flare up.
- 36:47But I think those of us who know the sport know that these
- 36:50athletes probably didn't really want to turn up anyway, but they
- 36:53have to show intent to turn up in order to qualify for the
- 36:57World Championships. And ultimately, the the
- 37:01selection policy allows, allows Keely to do what she's done,
- 37:04doesn't it? So it's kind of like, yeah, you
- 37:06can criticize her, but she's just playing by the rules that
- 37:09are put out in front of her. Which is just.
- 37:13Go. Sorry, Ron.
- 37:14No, I. Was going to say.
- 37:15And then on the flip side, you have to maybe question how her
- 37:22race selection allows her to prioritise attempting to run a
- 37:26world record just days after British champs and her and the
- 37:30team decide that's OK because British champs are so
- 37:33meaningless in the getting selected and just the overall
- 37:37weight of them. Anyway, let's go for a world
- 37:39record four days later. Yeah, I mean, I guess I've got
- 37:45nothing against go for a world record.
- 37:46She's at this level where she's got a window, right?
- 37:49She's got a window. She needs to probably run these
- 37:51records in the next two years before they might be Beyoncé.
- 37:55You never know, injuries, etcetera.
- 37:57And they are very, very difficult records.
- 37:59They're probably the hardest records in track and field.
- 38:02So I don't have anything against that.
- 38:03I think I agree with your initial point there, Ryan.
- 38:05It's just why do British, British athletics allow that to
- 38:09happen? They probably would have been
- 38:11better off saying to Keely, hey, just don't just, you know, just
- 38:14just don't bother, you know, don't turn up or just say, look,
- 38:17if you're going to turn up, do the, you know, race twice.
- 38:20You know, unless you have a legit reason, race twice because
- 38:22it makes a mockery of our our champs.
- 38:26And it's what British athletics do sort of time and time again,
- 38:29they make a mockery of our champs.
- 38:31Don't get me started. We had wave lights present in
- 38:33finals, but athletes had to decide whether they wanted wave
- 38:36lights or they didn't want wave lights.
- 38:37So there is a lot of, yeah, there's a lot of discussion
- 38:40coming around our British champs.
- 38:41But I think time and time again, the governing body shoots itself
- 38:43in the foot for me. And this was another example of
- 38:46them doing that and just opening themselves up to criticism when
- 38:49they probably didn't need. To I just don't understand how
- 38:53far away. So like Sebco, like World
- 38:56Athletics are doing all these good things in terms of
- 38:58improving prize money, creating a point system that that gives
- 39:03weighting to your local championships so you get bonus
- 39:07points to incentivize qualifying.
- 39:09You'd think that countries like even Australia, you you we're
- 39:12seeing now like Ryan, we were at our Aussie champs last year.
- 39:17They were hosted in Perth and we had in terms of the turn out, we
- 39:21had such quality racing locally because they were because the
- 39:24policy was such that they were athletes were incentivized to
- 39:28come home, be it all the way from the US in some instances to
- 39:32come race these champs. And it made the championship so
- 39:35exciting we that it was packed and it was such a spectacle.
- 39:40And so you've got someone who's leading world, you know, heading
- 39:43up World Athletics, creating these incentives for athletes in
- 39:47terms of pathways to qualify for championships.
- 39:50But yeah, British athletics don't seem to be getting on
- 39:52board with creating the right incentives for athletes to get
- 39:55the best athletes competing in their British champs.
- 39:57They're just that shit. No incentive There's there's no
- 40:01incentive if you're good. You really want to avoid the
- 40:03British champs because you're like, it's just a race.
- 40:05It's a high pressure event you could do without.
- 40:07You just want to get yourself on the plane and and if you're if
- 40:11you're on the cusp, if you're on the periphery, it's like, well,
- 40:13you are. The odds are so stacked against
- 40:15you that I think a lot of athletes now are just like,
- 40:17what's the point? You know what, they might be two
- 40:20or three seconds off the qualifying standard.
- 40:22What's the point in them going? They know they're not going to
- 40:24get a spot on the plane. I'm intrigued.
- 40:26What incentives did Australia put out in their selection
- 40:28policy last year that encourage people to come home and race
- 40:32their champs then? It's gotten harder, but it was
- 40:36to in the effect of you win the race, you run the standard, you
- 40:39get selected. OK, something, something to that
- 40:42to that effect. So a lot of people were coming
- 40:43home to make sure they won their pet event and I guess and then
- 40:46would go to Europe run standard. Right.
- 40:49Yeah. And I guess that's encouraging
- 40:51for Australians because the championships are so far ahead
- 40:54that they can just get that locked, get that done and dusted
- 40:57early doors. Yeah, yeah.
- 40:59Do you have prize money? Because another thing in the UK
- 41:01we have we have zero prize money for athletes and British champs.
- 41:07Not, not anything like the USI think the US do it really well
- 41:10in terms of how much money they have and the the, the, you know,
- 41:14publicity they put towards their events and those sorts and the
- 41:17drama that comes with the selection races because it's the
- 41:19top three goes and those quota spots fill up.
- 41:22But they have the depth, though, of a heap of athletes sort of
- 41:24run the standard. So it makes it a bit simpler,
- 41:27albeit that sometimes people will run the standard and still
- 41:30not get to go. But yeah, it is difficult
- 41:35because, like you said, Matt, they're just getting harder and
- 41:37harder to actually have athletes eligible to participate because
- 41:40the times are getting so fast. Because there's so many
- 41:44opportunities for athletes to pick up prize money in our
- 41:47sport. Probably arguably the hardest
- 41:49race to win is a national title. But yet there is there is no
- 41:53reward for them there. And I was just thinking, you
- 41:55know, for those on the outside, if they could, if they could win
- 41:59or if they could sneak a medal and they could get a decent sum
- 42:02of, you know, 1000 lbs or 2000 lbs for achieving that, that
- 42:06would be that would help them, you know, in their career, in
- 42:09their development. You know, that's an altitude
- 42:11camp right there, isn't it? So yeah, I think it's tricky.
- 42:14There's very little incentive. But also our governing body, how
- 42:18it how it funds itself is purely through lottery funding.
- 42:21And that is largely down to how we perform at a major
- 42:24championships. So you can kind of see the
- 42:26headache that our governing body have because if they don't take
- 42:30the best runners to perform at the World Championships or
- 42:32Olympic Games, they won't get the funding for future years.
- 42:36So you know, if they reward these great results in these
- 42:39upsets of British champs and we take a slightly weaker team, but
- 42:42one who delivered on the day of British champs and we know deep
- 42:45down they're going to get knocked out of the semi final,
- 42:47despite it being a huge opportunity and a huge part of
- 42:49their development, the British British athletics will be worse
- 42:53off for it. So there is a business element
- 42:56to all of this for them. And I guess my work around of
- 43:01that is I really believe that governing bodies should find a
- 43:04way to earn money and operate like a proper business instead
- 43:08of just relying on handouts. And I guess that's a problem for
- 43:12British athletics and a problem for our sport, because until
- 43:15they do that, we are probably only going to be worse offers,
- 43:17athletes, coaches, fans of our sport.
- 43:20Because lottery funding, let's be honest, is going one way.
- 43:23It's getting less and less and less every year.
- 43:25There's not enough money. Look at look at the state of our
- 43:27country. There's not enough money for
- 43:29them to plow hundreds of millions of pounds into funding
- 43:33our sport. So our sport needs to find a way
- 43:36to make money. Yeah, yet the road racing, I
- 43:40don't know what it's like over in the UK, but certainly here,
- 43:43like an event sells out within a matter of days.
- 43:47So all of these Rd. races are just becoming more and more
- 43:51attractive and, and athletes and, and anyone connected to the
- 43:54events are getting more and more incentivized to participate
- 43:58because the money's there. Yeah, and that's something that
- 44:03British Athletics have done. They've merged with Athletics
- 44:06Ventures, which is the company that owns sort of London
- 44:09Marathon events, Great North, Iran, etcetera.
- 44:12So and they have effectively, they've got, you know, a ton of
- 44:17cash and they're funding a lot of things at the moment.
- 44:21Yeah. And, and they're in a position
- 44:23where they get, they're making so much money because you're,
- 44:25you're right. You said they pretty much own
- 44:26every major road race in the country and it's selling out
- 44:3050,000 or 20,000 every other weekend.
- 44:33So it's I'm intrigued to see where the next, you know, what
- 44:37the next few years hold for for our sport, especially track and
- 44:40field. Matt, thanks very much for all
- 44:43of your opinions. I know you said earlier you're
- 44:45on a bit of a cut off, so I just want to get a couple of quick
- 44:47fire questions at you before you go.
- 44:50Looking ahead to Thursday, do you think Keely does it?
- 44:54Yeah, wave lights. I mean, she looked really good.
- 44:57Birmingham isn't notoriously a super fast track.
- 45:00I think she does it and that'll be her first world record and
- 45:02see what she can do outdoors. She looked very, very
- 45:04impressive. Is the Do you know who else is
- 45:09in the field at this stage? I actually don't, I haven't, I
- 45:12haven't done my research yet on this one, but I'm sure there
- 45:15are. I'm sure there is a start list
- 45:17or at least some rumours out there already online.
- 45:20But I know Femke Bowl's going to do the 600 so won't face off
- 45:24against Keely. But I think their competition
- 45:26is, is almost irrelevant in this one.
- 45:29It's going to be all her, you know, seconds ahead of the
- 45:33field. It's funny because we were
- 45:36speaking about Femka Ball last week or the week before when we
- 45:40and like kind of the impact of her debut.
- 45:41And this is like Keely's answer to it, isn't it?
- 45:44And it's quite, quite emphatic. I think it only would have
- 45:48spurred Keely on seeing Femka apparently.
- 45:55Tisca de Guma from Ethiopia is running, that's the big match up
- 45:59with Keely and Jemariki is there and no way lay your go from
- 46:04Benin, Yeah. They're good.
- 46:07They're good runners, you know, outdoors on their day, they're
- 46:09156 runners, but I just think I haven't seen enough of them this
- 46:14indoor season dealt, you know, it's a gold tour.
- 46:16So there is going to be a world class field.
- 46:17But you know, if if we're talking about Keely running 155
- 46:21low here, she's going to be two or three seconds ahead of the
- 46:23rest, no question. I was thinking about this
- 46:27question myself earlier and I was thinking about Lily and
- 46:29Odira, who who beat Keely in in Tokyo and she hasn't ran since.
- 46:34So I'm wondering what's going on there, whether she'll be back
- 46:37this this indoor year or not. But yeah, we'll see.
- 46:44And also Keely said she wouldn't be doing com games in that
- 46:47interview. So is she all in on Europeans
- 46:50after indoors? I think so.
- 46:54I think exactly that. It's funny, we spoke about
- 46:57British champs not meaning a huge deal to athletes.
- 47:00And I think you get to a certain level like Keely is and you
- 47:04know, she's obviously decided the Commonwealth Games isn't a
- 47:07priority for her and probably chasing records will be.
- 47:11I think she'll be going for a world record this summer again,
- 47:13outdoors over the 800. So she'll be looking, I don't
- 47:17know I the comp games is end of July, early August, right?
- 47:20I haven't matched that up with the Diamond League timetable
- 47:22yet, but I suspect there's a big Diamond leagues in and around
- 47:26this window that she'll be targeting.
- 47:29Fair enough. Well, thanks very much for your
- 47:31expert opinion and really enjoyed talking everything
- 47:34British athletics. I'm sorry we didn't get into the
- 47:37the details of the results, but that's that's the easy part.
- 47:40We can do that. It's your strategical oversight
- 47:43that we appreciate. Lads, thanks very much.
- 47:47Cheers, Matt. That was fun.
- 47:50It's, it's kind of confirms all the things that we we conspire
- 47:53about because he's on the ground then he's got all the
- 47:56connections and knows the insurance and outs of it,
- 47:58doesn't he? I love his voice.
- 48:04He's a good speaker. Yeah, and interesting, like I
- 48:08feel like it doesn't make sense to us some of the things that
- 48:12British athletics are doing. And it sounds like it that that
- 48:15feelings across the board. And I think you mentioned Ryan,
- 48:20do you see Jordan, Donne Donnelly post something recently
- 48:22to that effect as well offering assistance And some of the
- 48:26people we've spoken to from the UK also pretty disenchanted
- 48:29athletes. Like I think it's a pretty
- 48:31consistent message about it being pretty share.
- 48:35Yeah, I mean, what's it, what's it have to come to when
- 48:38someone's personally offering to cover the costs of athletes
- 48:41who've literally qualified for their travel and stuff?
- 48:45Yeah, and it just doesn't make sense.
- 48:47It's an event, It's a sport that's governed by World
- 48:50Athletics. Why these by these countries
- 48:53having such influence when they don't even employ them, they
- 48:56don't pay them anything? Do you think Donnelly had any
- 49:01Paul in Wakefield's contract? What, Nike?
- 49:07Because they're both from World, aren't they?
- 49:10Yeah, it could be a conspiracy. I thought, to be honest, I
- 49:14thought he was going to join M11, obviously being only up the
- 49:18road an hour or so away from where he lives.
- 49:22But to be fair, he's been with his coach since like pre uni and
- 49:26he's he said he's managed to stay with his coach while
- 49:29signing for Nike. So, and we heard them say on the
- 49:31interview about his little trial with Macau and kind of like
- 49:36Dino, it seems like he's got got really good dynamic just with
- 49:39with his coach. So perfect Sassa potentially.
- 49:42What did you think of the video? They just do it.
- 49:46I thought it was going to turn into a bit of a meme to be fair.
- 49:53They do it well though, that Nike with that sort of shit,
- 49:56don't they? Yeah, well, it's Nike got some
- 50:00really good coverage this weekend in Barcelona, didn't
- 50:03they? Because, I don't know, they must
- 50:05have some sort of relationship with Barcelona.
- 50:07You know, you, you see the races, like sometimes it's full
- 50:10of a six athletes, sometimes it's full of Adidas athletes.
- 50:14And this one was Nike. Jimmy Whelan was pumping out the
- 50:17content of Jack Raynor. What wasn't he?
- 50:20That was sick. That was cool coverage.
- 50:23But yeah. And what shoe is that?
- 50:25The new Alpha Fly. I think that was just a new
- 50:29colorway of the three. As far as I could tell it was
- 50:32the same structure. Yeah, look good.
- 50:36That didn't it? They look pretty cool.
- 50:38We'll probably get into it, but. Yeah, let's rattle off a few of
- 50:41these British indoor ones and I think we've spoken about the
- 50:44important things, but we'll cover the results.
- 50:46So the women's 800 meters, as we touched on, Keely Hodgkinson won
- 50:51her semi final in 156.33, a world lead.
- 50:55She won by 9 seconds from Ellie Baker, who herself has
- 51:00represented GB on multiple occasions.
- 51:02So just shows the magnitude of of what Keely's done.
- 51:05Like, you know, the way the stagger, I don't know if you've
- 51:08seen the race, but they, they all start ahead of each other.
- 51:10Like Keely just ate that up within about 50 meters.
- 51:14It was quite bizarre. And no pacemaker from the front
- 51:19to run that time. I can see why maths is quite up
- 51:23and about on this potential world.
- 51:25World record on Thursday. So she lowers her own indoor
- 51:30national record of 157 from the same indoor track in 2023.
- 51:35And I'm looking at the the rankings.
- 51:37She now has five of the six fastest ever petition doors,
- 51:40times only that Isabel Buffy, who Matt mentioned is in amongst
- 51:45them from her time in Boston this year.
- 51:50And then, unfortunately for the fans sake, Keely, as we touched
- 51:54on, decided not to participate in the final.
- 51:57But that final was then won by Isabel Buffy herself the
- 52:01challenger, the 157 lady from this year.
- 52:04She ran 159.64 to beat Emily Simpson in a two O 1.43.
- 52:09So pretty comprehensive win there.
- 52:13Moving on to the women's 3K, Hannah Nuttall who's been in
- 52:20sizzling hot form this year running the 3K in was it in
- 52:26Boston the other week where she went toe to toe with Lemon
- 52:29goalie and Hennigren and pushed Lemon goalie right to the end.
- 52:33So Hannah Nuttall won this race in 841.75, which is a course
- 52:38record, A championship record, rather taking the record from
- 52:41Joe Pavey who is 50% of Jake Smith's coaching squad.
- 52:48That record stood from 2004. So it's interesting.
- 52:52It shows you how championship races are naturally slower
- 52:55because Hannah and us all has ran faster than that on several
- 52:58occasions herself, yet no one British indoor champs has run
- 53:02faster in over 20 years. The men's 3K was won by Thomas
- 53:08Keane, training partner of Jake Whiteman, New Balance athlete.
- 53:12He won in 751.68 from Henry Mccluckie 751.7.
- 53:17So insanely close here. And when you look at their PBS,
- 53:24I remember before I chatted to math on the podcast last week, I
- 53:28knew we were going to talk about British champs or thought we
- 53:30might. So I was doing a bit of like
- 53:33research trying to get my pick sorted.
- 53:36And for this I landed on Mccluckey because his PBS like
- 53:40far outweigh that of Thomas Keynes, who's 9 seconds faster
- 53:44over the 3K. And Keynes managed to to do them
- 53:49here, so fair play. I think he's always kind of been
- 53:52on the periphery, Tom Keane, like he's made a couple of
- 53:55finals or he's finished 5th and 6th here and there.
- 53:58But this is a is a big run. Yeah, you always see him in a
- 54:02Jake Whiteman's YouTube videos. He seems to train with him a
- 54:05lot. Well, yeah, no big win.
- 54:10Like 751 isn't hanging around either.
- 54:13Big Love sort of is when they're busy.
- 54:16Like, the standard for the world's is 733 so.
- 54:21But yeah, championship bracing is a lot slower.
- 54:24And that's the that's the point we were picking up earlier.
- 54:28You know, Matt's point as well. So there's no incentive in any
- 54:31of these policies. Like you're going into a
- 54:33championship race, the pace lots are optional, the pacemakers
- 54:37aren't there. And so then normally what you're
- 54:40trying to do is win the race because that counts for
- 54:42something. And then if it doesn't count for
- 54:44something then and you've got your sights set beyond just a a
- 54:47title and there's no financial incentive and there's no added
- 54:50incentive to qualify, then what's it for?
- 54:54So, yeah, bit of a shame. And then the result is, yeah,
- 54:58you know, maybe you don't get the the the races that you could
- 55:02otherwise have. Well, yeah, because so much of
- 55:06the of the year now depends on running fast, doesn't it?
- 55:09Not just for time bonuses and stuff, but also just to get
- 55:12yourself into other races, whether that's Diamond League
- 55:15races or even bronze silver level meets across the circuit.
- 55:19Like there's so much competition to get a start.
- 55:22Yeah, and well, and what you would do is you what should
- 55:25happen is that you would get added chant like points for
- 55:29running your local championship. And those points should
- 55:31hopefully bridge the gap where you can roll into a spot.
- 55:35But if your federation is UK Athletics that don't respect
- 55:39people that make quota spots, then these then your
- 55:44performances at these championships effectively don't
- 55:46count for anything. So what what should be
- 55:49happening, and that's the whole intent of the policy of what
- 55:52Word Athletics are doing, is giving extra points for people
- 55:54running their local championships.
- 55:57But it's the up to the federations then to select the
- 56:00athletes and let them go. The men's 1500 metres again,
- 56:05potentially a bit of a surprise here.
- 56:06Jack Higgins won in 338.12, another championship record from
- 56:12James McMurray further down the field.
- 56:15Familiar name, familiar face of Adam Fogg.
- 56:19A slightly disappointing run for him finishing fourth.
- 56:22And now based on like one of his Instagram posts after I can't
- 56:27remember where he ran indoors a few weeks ago and he was he was
- 56:30pretty harsh on himself. So yeah, I'm sure he he won't be
- 56:37best pleased with this one. But he's he's got plenty more in
- 56:41the tank than what he's what he's showing over the weekend
- 56:44there and he no doubt he will be back.
- 56:46Yeah, I mean, what's he ran? I think he's run indoors a sub
- 56:49350 mile, right. So like, yeah, I'm sure he'll,
- 56:56if he gets back into that sort of form, he'll be on top of this
- 57:00sort of race. The women's 1500 meters.
- 57:04Then I've seen clips of this one on social media.
- 57:07Gemma Riki's worn in a 426.26, which is notoriously slow given
- 57:14kind of like that magical 4 minute barrier we've spoken
- 57:17about for women and it did seem like a bit of a jog.
- 57:20And then the last lap just Little and Gemma Reeky, to be
- 57:24fair to her, she's she's left them in her dust.
- 57:28She's went from the front on the bow and they just weren't able
- 57:31to hang with her. Reeve Walcott Nolan went and
- 57:34then she's ended up being passed close towards the finish line
- 57:37because she finished third. Molly Hudson in second.
- 57:41The men's 800 meters was won by Ben Patterson, so he's
- 57:46notoriously one of the best British 800 meter runners
- 57:49alongside Max Bergen who wasn't here.
- 57:52So Patterson won in 146.74 from Henry Fisher 147.4 and Ethan
- 57:59Hussey 3rd 147.74. Putting aside Keely's time,
- 58:07that's pretty solid, right? 146 indoors.
- 58:11Yeah, you're right. That's pretty fast, especially
- 58:13in comparison to how the other races will run.
- 58:18And that's us, the British champs.
- 58:21So I think pretty comprehensive coverage, their results and
- 58:26contextual oversight as well. Moving on to the Perth track
- 58:31Classic not too far from home. This one happened Saturday
- 58:36evening in what started off to be 28° blistering sunshine, if
- 58:41not a couple degrees warmer. Stupidly sat myself in the stand
- 58:45where the sun aims right at you, saturated my shorts and
- 58:48T-shirts, and then proceeded to move into the shade as the as
- 58:53the sun actually went down. So bit of a backward strategy
- 58:56from me there, but the stand gives you like that Good
- 58:59oversight on the pole vault and the triple jump and stuff.
- 59:04The pole vault in particular, right?
- 59:06Yeah, I didn't know you're a big Coal fan.
- 59:09It's training. Needs to die, but I'll tell you
- 59:12what I am. I'm want to follow the crowd and
- 59:14that's where the crowd will go and so.
- 59:17Just for Owen's benefit, the sun is this yellow thing that.
- 59:21Oh really? Is it warm?
- 59:26I yeah, I felt a bit of the sun myself from the from the suede
- 59:32at the footy. I missed this mate, Ryan.
- 59:34I was entertaining at the time, yeah.
- 59:39On the touchline, calling the shots.
- 59:42I was, yeah, just giving Bailey Smith to rub down I.
- 59:46Show him rough that video whilst we sat there and he's gone.
- 59:49How'd he get there? Course he did.
- 59:52Course he did. He probably wants the contact.
- 59:55OK, they're a freight. They're a freight distributor as
- 59:59well. You'll probably probably get the
- 1:00:01cheaper delivery of his boxes of Fly Cub.
- 1:00:05Off the back of it, anyway. Did WA win by the way in state?
- 1:00:12State. They got rolled by four goals.
- 1:00:14So there's a State of Origin for the first time Owen in since
- 1:00:181998 that WA played against Victoria.
- 1:00:23So our Ryan and I's Ryan's adopted in my home state, played
- 1:00:27against the VIX, which for context, there's 18 clubs in the
- 1:00:31AFL, two of them play for WA and I think 9 or 10 play for
- 1:00:34Victoria. So the the odds were stacked
- 1:00:38against us and yeah, look, we were good.
- 1:00:41We got within a goal partway through the last quarter, but we
- 1:00:44ended up getting rolled. But it was a sellout crowd 60
- 1:00:47odd. Thousand I taught State of
- 1:00:49Origin was the the rugby league thing.
- 1:00:52Historically it is, but there used to, there used to be a
- 1:00:56State of origin as far as the AFL, but it's it's, it's not
- 1:00:59been around for what, I don't know, 20 something years.
- 1:01:04So yeah, almost 30 years. So it came back and they they
- 1:01:10tried it and I think it was quite a success.
- 1:01:13So much, so much so that I missed out on the Perth track
- 1:01:16classic. But anyway.
- 1:01:19Well, yeah, this one actually started for me on the Friday
- 1:01:23when Rafford text me saying what are you doing Friday, 6:00 PM
- 1:01:27And I knew he had something up his sleeve.
- 1:01:30I didn't have any plans anyway, but I was like nothing and.
- 1:01:34Valentine's. Should we have our early
- 1:01:38Valentine's days? So we did.
- 1:01:40We went down to the track and Justin Rinaldi and his Fast 8
- 1:01:45track club were doing their pre race tuner on the track.
- 1:01:49So there was people actually wasn't there randomly given he's
- 1:01:53the kind of main athlete at the minute, but Tan and Croker and
- 1:01:57the British guy and there was a Trinidad guy, Nathan
- 1:02:01Cumberbatch, 2 Japanese guys and Bob the WA boy and they were all
- 1:02:08just doing their pre race workout which to be honest
- 1:02:11wasn't all that exciting I think.
- 1:02:13Is Bob WA? He's down as Victorian.
- 1:02:16Yeah, I think he, he originally was born in WA and maybe spent
- 1:02:20early childhood here, but then has grew up later in life in
- 1:02:25Victoria. Raph was very keen to say that
- 1:02:28you consider WA home. Yeah.
- 1:02:30And he's like, Yep. He knew the right answer.
- 1:02:34Yeah, yeah. The workout wasn't all that
- 1:02:38exciting, so Croker and actually did something different to the
- 1:02:41rest of them, which was interesting.
- 1:02:43I don't know, maybe he's not up to the same level of training as
- 1:02:46them yet or he just prefers something different.
- 1:02:48So he done like 200 meter. It wasn't.
- 1:02:53It definitely wasn't race pace. Maybe like just 5K intensity or
- 1:02:57something. Walk through 100 meters, then he
- 1:02:59would do 100 meters, walk through 200 meters, done 200,
- 1:03:03walk through 100 done 100. And the other boys just done 3
- 1:03:08by one 50s. And they were definitely at race
- 1:03:11pace, if not like last lap intensity and then just walk
- 1:03:15backs in between. And they've done a shit load of
- 1:03:19drills. And the Japanese boys had the
- 1:03:22massage guns out. They were had the massage guns
- 1:03:25on their arms for like 10 minutes.
- 1:03:27You know, I think because you you got so much arm swing in an
- 1:03:30ACE 100. Jack taught mom swing.
- 1:03:36So that was, that was cool, like sat in the stand watching them
- 1:03:39do that. And then at the end, I think of,
- 1:03:42I don't know what Raff's relationship is with Justin, but
- 1:03:45he came over and spoke to us for a couple of minutes, which was
- 1:03:48nice. I mean, we'll get into the
- 1:03:51results, but he's some sort of maestro, isn't he?
- 1:03:55So it seems like. I don't know what he is.
- 1:03:59What does he know about the 800 that other people don't?
- 1:04:02I mean, obviously Keely's group are doing amazing things, but
- 1:04:06his conversion rate is outrageous.
- 1:04:10Yeah, because I think he was pretty tidy runner himself.
- 1:04:12He ran maybe 150 or 149 / 800. But obviously he's he's no
- 1:04:19longer an athlete. He's I don't know how old he is,
- 1:04:21but yeah, the athlete years are behind him.
- 1:04:23But shit yeah, he's still heavily involved and I think, I
- 1:04:28don't know if this is my bias for being like a note.
- 1:04:33Is he widely considered the best under meter coach in the world?
- 1:04:38I don't know. Yeah, I would like to know
- 1:04:40where, where he stacks, but just he has, it seems like we follow
- 1:04:45800 meters and his name is associated with some breakout
- 1:04:49performances often like it's not one and it's not luck, it's not
- 1:04:53one talented athlete. He seems to have a bit of a
- 1:04:55method of producing great results.
- 1:04:58Yeah. So for those who haven't
- 1:05:00connected the dots, he coached Josh Howie for the majority of,
- 1:05:05I know the past two years and they parted ways I think in
- 1:05:09October maybe. But he coached Howie to his
- 1:05:12world indoor title last year. I mean, technically Ronaldi's
- 1:05:17still a world indoor reigning champion through Josh and how we
- 1:05:22end up running what they run like 142 or something.
- 1:05:26So yeah, I think that is kind of best performance today.
- 1:05:29But everything he's done with people is multiple Australian
- 1:05:34records. Mark, he coaches Mark English.
- 1:05:36Everything he'd done last year he seemed to break Irish record
- 1:05:39week in, week out. He actually he took a call off
- 1:05:43Mark English whilst they were doing the session and he's like
- 1:05:48Marks Mark stuck up a mountain and snowed in and they were like
- 1:05:52laughing at how they were all in the like 30° He's.
- 1:05:57Sounds familiar? Anyway, so yeah, the actual meet
- 1:06:07itself, the first race on the cards was the 5000 meters which
- 1:06:14we saw on the preview last week was filled with lads from WA,
- 1:06:20which I don't know what to make of that.
- 1:06:21In itself it's good because homegrown lads get a chance, but
- 1:06:25it's also a shame because it's not drawing people from Victoria
- 1:06:29and NSW for whatever reason. And then to compound that, the
- 1:06:36the best male middle distance runner in in Perth, Matt
- 1:06:40Ramsdon, didn't start, which was a shame.
- 1:06:45So the race was born in the end by Max Shervington, who was
- 1:06:48originally down as a pacemaker. He's done the R Jake Smith
- 1:06:52finished the job off and run 1425.
- 1:06:57He was pulling his teammates Matt Smith along for most of the
- 1:07:00race and you could actually see because it was so hot.
- 1:07:03To be fair, this race was like 430, so like prime heat and I
- 1:07:09was stood with Ramsden whilst this race was going on and
- 1:07:12Ramsden's like yeah, share those going to pace Smithy.
- 1:07:16They're going to try and get Smithy like a fast time.
- 1:07:19And then it was pretty evident that they were off the pace.
- 1:07:21They were going for quite early and then say mid race or 2/3
- 1:07:28into the race. Share those like doing plenty of
- 1:07:30shoulder checks, but not to see if Smithy's making a move on
- 1:07:33him, more so to make sure that he's still there and he's not
- 1:07:36leaving his teammate isolated. Because it did look like it was
- 1:07:40getting tough. But he was a good team player.
- 1:07:42He stayed with him, helped him finish off and then obviously
- 1:07:45last lap share though, just put the banners on, made sure he got
- 1:07:48the win. Again, was there prize money for
- 1:07:51that, you know? I think there's a little bit,
- 1:07:54maybe there's $1000 or something.
- 1:07:57Take out, I think the winner of the RMF, OK, I think it was like
- 1:08:00200 lbs or something like that. Not much at all.
- 1:08:03That's crazy for how like stuff that races.
- 1:08:08And all the sponsors and all, yeah, just like you've got a
- 1:08:11little book, like a like a program unlike it, all the names
- 1:08:16of all the people running. But like every second page was
- 1:08:19filled with sponsors. So yeah, strange.
- 1:08:24Northern Ireland athletics minted.
- 1:08:27I don't even know if it is or not Alex.
- 1:08:29I think it's like just its own event.
- 1:08:32The affiliated bit your car athletics probably why sucking
- 1:08:36on the profits out for admin. Probably the fellow lives on
- 1:08:40like the terraced house on like #49800 meters into the course.
- 1:08:46And Owen, you, you could have. I know the heat does massive
- 1:08:50things but could have been competitive in this race in
- 1:08:54another life. In another life, yeah, you never
- 1:08:58know, I was going to have a shop on a plane only for the jet lag.
- 1:09:04Which like Speaking of the heat and the impacts of it, I was
- 1:09:06actually having a debate with a fellow in work today because he
- 1:09:09went like his kids do little athletics and stuff.
- 1:09:13So I don't know if they were participating earlier on.
- 1:09:18But anyway, I was speaking to him and I was like, Oh yeah.
- 1:09:20Well, like the, the 5K was a bit of a shame.
- 1:09:22Wasn't it Like small field and stuff and they weren't able to
- 1:09:26run fast because of the heat? Like perhaps they could have put
- 1:09:29the 5K on towards the end of the night to give them a bit of a
- 1:09:32better chance And he's like Nah mate, no athlete you should be
- 1:09:36able to run in that. Turn off the field full time
- 1:09:40professional athletes. Yeah, so I tried to debate with
- 1:09:45him for a bit, but then we just parked it because he wasn't
- 1:09:48budging. Yeah, they're quite getting paid
- 1:09:50half a mil like the AFL players that were playing at 4:40.
- 1:09:56The arguably the headline events, the men's 800 meters
- 1:09:59where Fast 8 track club filled six of the 9 starting spots here
- 1:10:04was won by people 14389 in a meet record welding door
- 1:10:09qualifier teammate in what appears to be like the junior
- 1:10:15pass handing of the guard Bob Abdulan 144.27 PB Welding door
- 1:10:22qualifier as well. So that this guy, he ran 146 I
- 1:10:27think might have been last week. Even so, he's taken 2 seconds
- 1:10:31off his PB two weeks in a row and like over the 800 meters
- 1:10:35that is massive again. He must have been, I did say,
- 1:10:40and I mean, not that we need to shout out fly carb any more than
- 1:10:44what we already have, but did you see J Rs?
- 1:10:47I think his Instagram page, Justin Ronaldi's Instagram page,
- 1:10:51I think is a good one. And did you see there was some
- 1:10:53sort of collab post before I come on there?
- 1:10:56So the boys are all taken their their car by car mixers, which
- 1:11:01was cool. So maybe that's been the the
- 1:11:05latest Fortnite's edition and just making the difference.
- 1:11:09Yeah, they've got the connections, haven't they?
- 1:11:11They're right onto it. Anchors, Yeah, yeah, I mean, as
- 1:11:15we spoke about the Morton products not able to get here.
- 1:11:18So we've been a bit shut off to it as we are shut off to a lot
- 1:11:21of things. So cool that it's available.
- 1:11:26Tan and Croker and the British guy was 3rd 144.53 world indoor
- 1:11:31qualifier as well. Luke Boys.
- 1:11:34He's coached by Benny Saints isn't he?
- 1:11:36Was 4th 145.16 another world indoor qualifier and then there
- 1:11:42was 3 fast 8 track guys in a row in 5th, 6th, 7th the Trinidad
- 1:11:47fella Nathan Cumberbatch and then 2 Japanese boys Makuto
- 1:11:50Kinko and Junior Matsumuto. So yeah, very successful out in
- 1:11:57for Rinaldi and his squad. What's that?
- 1:12:01Six of the top 7 and all 146 mid or quicker?
- 1:12:07Yeah, they're pretty average afternoon in Perth.
- 1:12:11Yeah, to be fair was there was some of the sprints were read
- 1:12:14and maybe like 75% of them would get read illegally and then so
- 1:12:20you know how the headwind would have been on that backstreet if
- 1:12:23the home straight was tailwind? Exactly.
- 1:12:26Yeah, it's not protected that back straight, not well
- 1:12:28protected anyway. So you're feeling that on the
- 1:12:30way around both times. And people basically went gun to
- 1:12:34tape, didn't he? He did all the work for the
- 1:12:35guys, towed them through, was too good, looked too good, but
- 1:12:39at the same time is the one pulling them to fast times.
- 1:12:42And he shut it down. It was only 20 meters or so to
- 1:12:46go, but there's another 10th 2/10 just through stopping
- 1:12:50basically, which Speaking of headwinds into the back
- 1:12:55straight, Abbey Caldwell won the women's 1500 meters in four O
- 1:12:582.82 from Naomi Tanaka, the Japanese lady.
- 1:13:03She's a bit of a veteran. I think they said she's like 11
- 1:13:07time Nationals champion or something and she's the one who
- 1:13:10you've seen maybe in like 10 KS and five KS.
- 1:13:15We say she's a veteran, but I think she's only Owen's age.
- 1:13:20Yeah, 99 She can't have won eleven national titles.
- 1:13:23She's younger than me. She's younger than me, yeah.
- 1:13:27Or maybe she just sweeps. Jeannie Mac.
- 1:13:31I think Keeley's only 23 as well.
- 1:13:36Which is are you? Are you still on British
- 1:13:38Indoors? Are you?
- 1:13:40No, we've lost him. It's a year in.
- 1:13:44We've it's been good. It's all got to him.
- 1:13:48He's got this head wobble and now what are we Sir?
- 1:13:53Sarah Owen is that Absolutely. No, yeah.
- 1:14:02So Caldwell, she at the bell, I think she was already on the
- 1:14:06front bath. The bell she made like a
- 1:14:08decisive move. And you could see she'd changed
- 1:14:10gear. And I was watching her up that
- 1:14:12back straight thinking, oh, I know how tough that is for you
- 1:14:14right now. Because you could see Tanaka was
- 1:14:16like just trying to tuck in behind her and getting a bit of
- 1:14:19protection. It's Caldwell.
- 1:14:21She's quite tall as well for a girl.
- 1:14:23But then yeah, the last 100 again, Caldwell changed gear and
- 1:14:29she just pulled 10 meters into her like straight away.
- 1:14:33So great run. Fast time as well.
- 1:14:35That's what you you haven't flashbacks to Reese put in the
- 1:14:38sword to you this time last year, putting you to the sword.
- 1:14:43Yeah, memories of headwinds and stuff being shared or not being
- 1:14:47shared. I'm only salty until I got sub
- 1:14:5215. I'll forget about it then.
- 1:14:54You'll let it go then? I did notice you.
- 1:14:56How did you feel shouting at your mates that both went under
- 1:14:5915? It's it's a touchy subject,
- 1:15:05really best off just reading out the 13 minute ones and leaving
- 1:15:09it there. Thought I left it alone, but
- 1:15:12while we're here I thought might as well drive back over it.
- 1:15:17Barcelona half I know and to be fair, before we move on from
- 1:15:21Perth, there was the crowd. I wasn't sure like how many
- 1:15:24people they were going to get down given state of Origin was
- 1:15:27on and you know where it's located there.
- 1:15:29There's like basketball and swimming events on as well, but
- 1:15:33no official numbers. It was it was pretty full to be
- 1:15:36fair, like the stands stand looked full.
- 1:15:40But you know, last year at nationals when we were like kind
- 1:15:42of stood around the grass and it was packed, that wasn't.
- 1:15:46Yeah, hard to expect that level of busy, but that's still good
- 1:15:49that you've got a good turn out for it, right?
- 1:15:51And it's pretty hot afternoon. Hard to drag the family down
- 1:15:53when it's 30. You know it's what, 3435° during
- 1:15:58the day? Yeah, I mean, we've got some
- 1:16:01work to do. Given that the the pole vaulters
- 1:16:04were clearly the main event, we need to get behind the runners a
- 1:16:07bit more than we. I feel like it's a lot easier
- 1:16:11when you've got like the world champion coming back from injury
- 1:16:15in our first event in like a year and a half.
- 1:16:18It's a lot easier to sort of get a crowd.
- 1:16:20Homegrown as well. Yeah, yeah, I mean, the last big
- 1:16:25on the sprints as well. The home crowd, the local crowd.
- 1:16:31Knowledgeable. Anyway, Barcelona half.
- 1:16:34Owen, do you want to read about this?
- 1:16:37We were kind of following it yesterday, weren't we?
- 1:16:40Yeah, and Barcelona, half and second.
- 1:16:46I've got so many tabs open because I'm working as well.
- 1:16:49Sorry, Dean, Were you following it or shall I?
- 1:16:54I I read. I've got here, I've got actually
- 1:16:58double trouble here. I don't think like you look
- 1:17:01forward to watching like Seville Barcelona, but when you actually
- 1:17:05get up and like watch them, they're shit because you're
- 1:17:07you're just watching this like single Canyon and well, Seville
- 1:17:11was probably an anomaly now because it was actually close,
- 1:17:13but bars on 1/2. You're lately Justin just
- 1:17:15looking at Gabourey on his own for the whole thing race, just
- 1:17:19his stride like running for like an hour and it's the.
- 1:17:23Race, yeah, it's not that exciting.
- 1:17:26That being said, though, like the 10 Ki didn't, I didn't mind,
- 1:17:29you know, the Valencia 10 with Armgren going for it.
- 1:17:34I think the the difficult part is like when someone's just
- 1:17:36running solo. Armgren still had someone right
- 1:17:39to race and then you and then you knew the build up and you're
- 1:17:42targeting something. Whereas I don't know Gebriwe
- 1:17:46just going solo. It doesn't if there's two or
- 1:17:48three people at least making it a race for and there was
- 1:17:50something meaningful. But like, yeah, those races
- 1:17:54aren't. I'd rather just follow the live
- 1:17:57tracker for people we have spoken about.
- 1:18:00Well, and that's the alternative isn't it?
- 1:18:02Like you, you put the stream on like Owen says and it's a bit
- 1:18:05anti climactic because you just sat there on your phone like
- 1:18:08stressing flicking between different people's tracker
- 1:18:10trying to work out what the forecasted time is.
- 1:18:14But this is where I think the Valencia Marathon do it so well.
- 1:18:18So they they make it known about how many national records get
- 1:18:23broken in that race. And then they're constantly
- 1:18:25cutting to the commentators are constantly going through like
- 1:18:31where's Izzy and Jess at as far as the Aussie women are going
- 1:18:34and their national record, like where's the local people are
- 1:18:37going? Like they constantly jump
- 1:18:40around. And at least that makes it a
- 1:18:41much more interesting stream. Whereas if the stream just
- 1:18:44focuses on one leader that's a minute up the road, like, who
- 1:18:46cares? Yeah, and ultimately the
- 1:18:50commentators only have a certain limits of like material that
- 1:18:55they've prepared for each person.
- 1:18:56So if they're forced to try and speak about one person for an
- 1:18:59hour straight, it can get pretty soft.
- 1:19:02Exactly where is the events that sort of build these narratives
- 1:19:05for lots of people? Like did it cut at all to the
- 1:19:08fact that Jack Rayner was running the time he was running
- 1:19:11or like there's a few British lads going for around that one
- 1:19:14hour mark? Like where's the the insights on
- 1:19:16that? Yeah, no.
- 1:19:19So anyway, Gabrielle won. He ran PB, maybe PB 5741.
- 1:19:28Is that his pay? Is that his PB?
- 1:19:30Or because he ran 50 out of 5, right?
- 1:19:33Yeah, so his, his finishing time, how fast it was wasn't
- 1:19:37even a PB. Oh, I get you.
- 1:19:39Which still about what, 30 something seconds off the world
- 1:19:43record? Because it's gone back to 57 and
- 1:19:4530, hasn't it? Yeah.
- 1:19:48So Gabriel, he ran 5805, but the PB is 5741.
- 1:19:54A second was Dominic Lobarlu. He does him moving up a distance
- 1:19:58normally he's like a 5K10K guy. He ran 5926.
- 1:20:03And then third was Emmanuel rode off from France.
- 1:20:07He ran 5937. Not with mention which for all
- 1:20:12you all he did out there, Jack Reiner, he ran 5953.
- 1:20:16Which is a new Aussie record. Great Britain sacked Muhammad,
- 1:20:21he ran a 6046 as well. I don't know what mentions Joe
- 1:20:27Wigfield in his spanking unit here around 6119, following on
- 1:20:32from his like 2738 national record in Valencia.
- 1:20:36He wanted a little bit more, but again, you can sort of complain
- 1:20:39with a 61 low. Andy Booth Church ran a 6145 for
- 1:20:45his PB, so just a little bit behind him.
- 1:20:48Friend of show Jake Smith. He he ran 6147 and he came out
- 1:20:55with a big statement after that. He was a 61 minute runner again
- 1:20:58as his first time breaking 62 since Emma's battle with Red
- 1:21:03Ass. So yeah, super happy for Jake
- 1:21:08and all theater. Did you see Fast Course?
- 1:21:11Did you see Jake comment the night before or day before that
- 1:21:15he was wanting to do that? Yeah.
- 1:21:19Yeah. He posted about it.
- 1:21:20Which so it's cool to like put, put a goal out there that you,
- 1:21:27you know, you ought to be a bit brave and obviously a sensible
- 1:21:30one because he went out and did it, which is cool.
- 1:21:34Yeah, this is all on. His build up to London.
- 1:21:36This is build up to London. He I message him off the account
- 1:21:41saying like Congrats and whatever and he said I've like
- 1:21:46it. I was running with Wakefield and
- 1:21:49Butchie through the 10K split like we're all in the pack.
- 1:21:54And he said about Joe, like, I've never seen someone look
- 1:21:57like the jogging sub 29 minutes through 10 Ki think like track
- 1:22:03runners can just look like that, can't they?
- 1:22:05When they're doing like their threshold stuff, it just looks
- 1:22:08so so easy for them. It's like running with the Toms,
- 1:22:12like they say, doing threshold with them and then just then
- 1:22:16we're like, they're just like loping around like gazelles.
- 1:22:22Yeah, it's not fair. And then when you've got the
- 1:22:24threshold to match the economy, it's like.
- 1:22:28Dangerous. Yeah.
- 1:22:30On the women's side it was won by Lois Chumong from Kenya.
- 1:22:36She ran a 64 O one and second was when he Claddy from the USA.
- 1:22:42In her Spanking Unite kit she was Under Armour athlete, now
- 1:22:45she's Nike. She ran a 66 O 4 which lowered
- 1:22:49her American record by 5 seconds.
- 1:22:54Third was Deanna, a burger from Ethiopia.
- 1:22:58She ran 6628 and although not even mentioned, smart Harrison
- 1:23:03around 69 flat and I just wondered George around 70 O 7
- 1:23:09and she's around 67 minutes before, so she's a little bit
- 1:23:12off it, but she run in London as well probably.
- 1:23:15She's probably building up for that.
- 1:23:17I know Jess is definitely in the field.
- 1:23:19I'm not sure if Sam is potentially.
- 1:23:23But yeah, that's a bucket list race for me as well.
- 1:23:25Personal half It looks savage. Yeah, the just from the map on
- 1:23:30Strava as well, it seems like you just kind of on, you only do
- 1:23:34a couple of turns considering you, you run 201K, you're not
- 1:23:38weaving in and out and turn left and right all the time.
- 1:23:42And Barcelona is just a stunning city in itself.
- 1:23:44So to have like a a weekend break or four or five days there
- 1:23:49would be bloody lovely. What do you make of I guess
- 1:23:55we've skimmed over Jack's national record really second,
- 1:23:59second ever Australian under 60 minutes, second after Brett
- 1:24:03Robinson and knocking him off his perch.
- 1:24:07So that's Brett now had Andy take his marathon record and
- 1:24:10Jack take his half record. So he did repost Jack's like
- 1:24:15time and stuff yesterday. And I know they're they're very
- 1:24:17good mates. So I'm sure he is happy for him,
- 1:24:19but in all honesty if that was me, mate or not, I would
- 1:24:26struggle to be happy for him if he'd taken my record.
- 1:24:31Yeah, I was. That was my first reflection.
- 1:24:34But then at the same time, I suppose with records, you know,
- 1:24:36they're always going to evolve. Don't know.
- 1:24:39So probably never get too attached to a record is probably
- 1:24:43a good way to be because they're always going to get quicker.
- 1:24:47But I think I wonder if a lot of people are going to comment now
- 1:24:50that he's run that time start to hypothesize that he could break
- 1:24:54the Australian record for the marathon, right?
- 1:24:57So I feel like see what you guys think.
- 1:25:00But it feels like he gets fit very he gets very fit and and
- 1:25:05he's running some great performances that are putting
- 1:25:08him on the cusp of world level running.
- 1:25:10And then he struggles to stay healthy.
- 1:25:12So I think the hope is that you see 12 more months of good
- 1:25:16performances. Yeah, it does seem to do good
- 1:25:21things when you can have just like two or three months of
- 1:25:24training, isn't it? But that it's that like 6 to 12
- 1:25:27months he struggles to maintain. Yeah, I think it was like 2018,
- 1:25:34a lot of that MTC group went to Europe and he didn't, he stayed
- 1:25:39home and he ran all of the local races here.
- 1:25:43So like, and he went on like a a streak of winning everything.
- 1:25:48Like he won like the Gold Coast half, beating a few Japanese in
- 1:25:51a Sprint finish. Like won this.
- 1:25:53I think the Sunshine Coast half won a heap of all like all the
- 1:25:56domestic races just cleaned up. And then it culminated in the
- 1:26:01Cardiff Half Marathon, which was the, it might have been the
- 1:26:04inaugural and I don't know if it happened again, but Commonwealth
- 1:26:07Games half marathon champs. And it was, it was him and like
- 1:26:103 Ugandans, I think all like vying for the win.
- 1:26:15And he ran like 60 flat or maybe 61 flat there like 60, sorry, in
- 1:26:21the 60 minutes or just, or maybe 61 dead.
- 1:26:23And he won it. And that was the end of the like
- 1:26:26a huge season. And it was sort of the perfect
- 1:26:29build up, winning all these local races but building fitness
- 1:26:31the whole time and then sort of going to an international race
- 1:26:34and doing very well. So yeah, that was I, I feel like
- 1:26:38the the best streak of consistent running I can recall
- 1:26:42him having. So hopefully he gets something
- 1:26:43like that going again in 2026. Yeah, and you're right, like the
- 1:26:49the Australian male marathon landscape, it is an interesting
- 1:26:53dynamic at the minute with kind of like Brett hasn't had a good
- 1:26:58race for a little while and then Andy's had the recent injury.
- 1:27:02Jack up until now was well, he still hasn't really put together
- 1:27:06a marathon that he's based on this capable of.
- 1:27:10And then the other guys are kind of just on the periphery like
- 1:27:13again with have to he hasn't delivered what he looks to be
- 1:27:16capable of. So there's there is really
- 1:27:18opportunity there for someone to cone like grab an LA spot by the
- 1:27:24scruff of the neck, like someone has a big breakthrough in the
- 1:27:26next couple of years, which yeah, will be interesting to see
- 1:27:30what happens. Did you say there when he
- 1:27:33crossed the line? And he's very excited.
- 1:27:35Like, I love seeing those things because yes, you know, you don't
- 1:27:40often know those feelings when you cross the line.
- 1:27:43You have a good race. Like they don't always come
- 1:27:45round. So it's cool to see.
- 1:27:48Yeah. You have the freshest sensation
- 1:27:54of that, but how good is the feeling?
- 1:27:55You know, like you would remember it from last week,
- 1:27:58right? It's a sick feeling when you,
- 1:28:00you have in your mind what you were as a runner and then you
- 1:28:03you get to redefine that in, in that moment.
- 1:28:07It's it's a cool feeling. Yeah, It's just like the sense
- 1:28:10of like, you can't believe that, Like, you're like, because you
- 1:28:13put so much work and effort into this.
- 1:28:15Like especially Jack, like this is his job.
- 1:28:17Like, this is his life. He's devoted how many years to
- 1:28:20this? And then for it to, like, click
- 1:28:23and pay off. Yeah.
- 1:28:25It's an incredible feeling. And he's got a bit of stick to
- 1:28:30be fair in the past, like with race selection, choosing to go
- 1:28:34and run Melbourne and get the cash and stuff it.
- 1:28:38And he does seem like a good lad.
- 1:28:39So yeah, you are. Well, I am happy for him to be
- 1:28:42fair, but you know yourself like in that last K or the last like
- 1:28:491020% of a race when you know, if you've got a target and you
- 1:28:53know you're like close to it but you're not convinced you're in
- 1:28:56or out, maybe you might try and do math at one point and you can
- 1:29:01entertain that sum for three seconds.
- 1:29:04And if you can't do it straight away, you're like, oh fuck it.
- 1:29:06Oh, let's just run and see. So because it was so close, 4
- 1:29:10seconds, I bet you that's what was going on in his mind.
- 1:29:13Like in that going into the last K he was like shit, what do I
- 1:29:16need to run this last K in? So yeah, what about the elation?
- 1:29:20Do you reckon? Doesn't he reckon?
- 1:29:22He knew he was on. And stuff now I reckon he felt
- 1:29:25his reckon he's just running. He's with the spirits.
- 1:29:30Kenny is just, yeah, having a good time.
- 1:29:32In his flow he's a smooth mover though, isn't he as well?
- 1:29:39Yeah, that is it. Jimmy Whelan, That footage that
- 1:29:42he was cutting up look very, very cool.
- 1:29:45Yeah, I wonder if it'll be sending Jack a nice invoice
- 1:29:48there, because Jack Jack's got that forever.
- 1:29:50Like all the sick footage of him breaking the record.
- 1:29:54I'm sure Nike will look after him as well with that record.
- 1:30:00Seville Marathon moving on. This was another one in the
- 1:30:03Spanish country. They know how to put on a bloody
- 1:30:06good race, don't they? There just, it seems like
- 1:30:09through the the European winter there's just 5K10K half marathon
- 1:30:14every single week somewhere in Spain and the times are always
- 1:30:17rapid. So the women's race was born for
- 1:30:21the first time in nine years by a non African, by the Finnish
- 1:30:26lady Elisa Vino in 22039. Second was a Kenyan Beatrice
- 1:30:32Chesarek 22156 that Ethiopian Mulat Taquili in 222 O 3.
- 1:30:40So I was looking at this Finnish woman because I was like that's
- 1:30:43random. A Finnish woman running 220 and
- 1:30:48she's ran since October last year, September last year when
- 1:30:52the World Championships was on. She's ran 4 marathons, so Tokyo
- 1:30:57being the 1st, she finished fifth round 2/28.
- 1:31:01She then run the finish marathon championships in October just
- 1:31:05three or so weeks later around 223 won it.
- 1:31:08She then went to Valencia in December and 2:20 again and then
- 1:31:13is came here to Seville round 220 again, slightly lowered
- 1:31:17their PB for a new national record.
- 1:31:19Which shit we talk about Backing up like within 8 weeks is
- 1:31:23potentially a bit risky. She's she ran four in five
- 1:31:26months. Whatever's going on, it's
- 1:31:29working right. Yeah, I wonder if she's on like
- 1:31:33the Nomeo train being from them. No other countries.
- 1:31:38You can take in the doses in the right times to recover.
- 1:31:44The men's race was pretty dramatic.
- 1:31:47It was born in the end by Shura Katata of Ethiopia.
- 1:31:50Two O 359 and second was as raw Heerden in two O 359 also.
- 1:31:58So a dead heat. You must have seen on Instagram
- 1:32:01the kind the reel of them both crossing the line together and
- 1:32:06one of them actually trips the other one up as they go through
- 1:32:09the line. It went to the judges like I
- 1:32:14don't know if it was a couple hours or so after the race.
- 1:32:17They were struggling to like kind of decide who'd physically
- 1:32:20won the race. So it was another one of those
- 1:32:22World Championship style finishes.
- 1:32:25And then for the men further down, Ellis Cross from Team
- 1:32:28Macau was making his debut. And I think it was the three of
- 1:32:33us last week. We're having a debate over under
- 1:32:34210. Will he do it?
- 1:32:36Will he not do it? He almost said I'll go right
- 1:32:39down the middle. Boys 2/10/09 for his debut
- 1:32:42marathon, which I think it's clear he his main goal was to
- 1:32:46break 210. But pretty phenomenal debut.
- 1:32:51Yeah, you can't really complain with that for a debut.
- 1:32:52I think he went through halfway in 64 mid, so we slowed down a
- 1:32:56little bit in the second-half, but still like a 210 debut.
- 1:33:01If that's where you're starting from, you can't really complain.
- 1:33:06And then to your fellas actually finished ahead of him in the
- 1:33:08packing order, did you see that? Yeah, I did.
- 1:33:11Paul O'Donnell got the Euro qualifying standard for the
- 1:33:15marathon, which is which is pretty.
- 1:33:17Cool, I am sorry. I Vanyo that that Vanyo or Vanyo
- 1:33:26reminds me, you know, those like older videos.
- 1:33:30There's like videos of like older Olympic Games.
- 1:33:33I remember his name from there. And I'm just going is it Marty
- 1:33:38Vanyo? And apparently he was recognized
- 1:33:42as one of the last great runners of the V line, the finishing V
- 1:33:46line to like the likes of Lassie, Veron and others.
- 1:33:50And I think Vanyo, I remember him because I think he won gold,
- 1:33:54but he's reads like he's since been stripped of it because he
- 1:33:57tests positive for PEDs on a couple of occasions.
- 1:34:00So he's disqualified from the 1984 Olympics.
- 1:34:02But that's where that that name that I remember that name
- 1:34:06ringing a bell with athletics. But anyway, I'm not trying to
- 1:34:09draw any connection. She's not off strength.
- 1:34:12Yeah, well, I don't know, but but certainly like I just, you
- 1:34:17know, like the likes of Lassie, Veron and and Vinyard, they were
- 1:34:20like name synonymous with podiums and medals at major
- 1:34:24championships in the 50s, sixties, 70s and 80s.
- 1:34:27So maybe it's making the Fins are making a resurgence.
- 1:34:33And Sarah Aston also made her debut from Team Macau in this
- 1:34:37race, I think. Did she run 235?
- 1:34:42Yeah. Yeah, I think she was hoping for
- 1:34:45more, but again, like a solid debut.
- 1:34:47Yes, solid enough. Like, ideally she'd want to be
- 1:34:51taken like, I think Philly Bowden's 225.
- 1:34:53So she got like 10 minutes to make up.
- 1:34:56Yeah, first. Isn't that the same time as what
- 1:35:00the the James Man ran in Austin? True it, true it.
- 1:35:06Something like that my. God, I came up guys.
- 1:35:09I came across his his on YouTube.
- 1:35:12Did you see a pull up thing? YouTube dot.
- 1:35:17That's impressive. Yeah, fuck.
- 1:35:20Yeah, like what the hell. Yeah.
- 1:35:23But he seems like he's just a machine, like he just started to
- 1:35:25Karen jeans like this isn't one of his YouTube videos and like
- 1:35:28normal clothes and just like such OK.
- 1:35:31I'm just, does he talk about what he does for Chafe?
- 1:35:35I guess they're that tight that maybe it's like maybe he's all
- 1:35:38right. Surely he's at the point now
- 1:35:42where like he's he's got the kind of like the little meme
- 1:35:45element from it and now he actually wants to put a pair of
- 1:35:47splitties or half tights on and try and run fast.
- 1:35:50But he's he's true to his brand, to he's truest to it, to be
- 1:35:53fair. Oh yeah, here we go.
- 1:35:56What? What is his name?
- 1:35:57True it? True it?
- 1:35:59True it. True.
- 1:36:00Haynes or something, isn't it? Yeah, yeah, that's it.
- 1:36:03Gee whiz. Over half a million followers.
- 1:36:07Like this is his job like 100% he's just living off YouTube.
- 1:36:11Yeah, but yeah, 236. So there you go.
- 1:36:15I think he was, he was going on about trying to get close to 220
- 1:36:18or something, wasn't he? Or.
- 1:36:19Yeah, the I think he's going for the I think sub 16.
- 1:36:24Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:36:25Like good luck. Oh, for.
- 1:36:29Fox will be fired up about that this week, won't he?
- 1:36:31That's. Yeah, I that's why when I saw
- 1:36:34236, I thought, Oh yeah, didn't go go to the book.
- 1:36:40And we then had another myth in the USA.
- 1:36:43Shit sound invites. We can't skip it because what
- 1:36:49was going on? Can I do?
- 1:36:53Yeah, yeah. Sorry.
- 1:36:59Sound invoice in the US race. Let's pick out the main results.
- 1:37:03Scott BC again of Team Makawi ran a 5K and he ran 13/19.
- 1:37:09He only finished fifth in the race, so Andrew Hunter of the US
- 1:37:13ran 1310 to win that race. Drew Hunter.
- 1:37:17Oh yeah, they yeah. He gets you every time, doesn't
- 1:37:20he? If I read the result, I'd do you
- 1:37:23dirty here. But yeah, he it was good to see
- 1:37:26him win. And that Abdi new in second, a
- 1:37:29second behind like he was he's he's one of the guys that's kept
- 1:37:33Drew Hunter out of one of those world champs or Olympic teams in
- 1:37:36the past. So nice to see him get on top in
- 1:37:38some of these races because you know how he's peppering the
- 1:37:41mark. And I guess in terms of YouTube
- 1:37:44Diaries, he was part of Drew Hunter.
- 1:37:46It was he and his mum coached them for a minute.
- 1:37:49There was, what was that Adidas project that maybe it's been?
- 1:37:53Yeah, Tim, he was part of Tim and Elite, wasn't he?
- 1:37:56And he's so, and he was one of those guys, a bit like
- 1:38:00Kupertier, pretty unlucky to be just outside of getting on to
- 1:38:05these world teams in world and Olympic teams.
- 1:38:09So nice to see him getting on the right side of the Ledger as
- 1:38:12far as winning a race. That was cool.
- 1:38:15How can I still read Andrew after Kubeteer?
- 1:38:17Like physically corrected me. Should never figure that.
- 1:38:25Worth noting that David Malarkey of GB was also in there and 4th
- 1:38:29finished ahead of Scott BC and it's actually got the he's
- 1:38:31unattached so I don't think that'll be for too much longer.
- 1:38:35Running 30 and AC in and that failed women's 3K.
- 1:38:40Nikki Hiltz, backing up after the victory, asked the one to
- 1:38:44make a mile in 834 from Sinclair Johnson 835.
- 1:38:51Notably, do you say who's 5th? IR 1/3 so.
- 1:39:00For eight. Oh yeah, Shelby Houlihan was
- 1:39:01fifth. So interesting.
- 1:39:03Maybe a little bit starting their season a bit further back,
- 1:39:07right? Like I suspect we'll we'll be
- 1:39:11fit soon. Unattached.
- 1:39:13Was she unattached last year, Last year when she came back or?
- 1:39:17Yeah, she hasn't she. Probably has been, yeah, you
- 1:39:20associate her with Nike and but yeah, there you go.
- 1:39:24It's mad that she she can remain unattached, like as in no brands
- 1:39:28willing to support her for publicity reasons, but she still
- 1:39:32gets a star in these fields. Pretty stacked field too, like
- 1:39:35Caitlin Tui, who was like one of the top talents coming out of
- 1:39:41what the NCAA system is it. And then Dorcas away, who we've
- 1:39:46been calling reading out her results recently, was 8th.
- 1:39:52So yeah, Nikki Hilts and Sinclair Johnson beat home a
- 1:39:57pretty stacked field. Nikki's on one.
- 1:40:02I wonder if surely she's preparing for a while indoors
- 1:40:05because she could be a serious medal shot.
- 1:40:09They could be a serious medal shot.
- 1:40:12Yeah, yeah, you have to think so.
- 1:40:16The men's version of the Three K was worn by Nico Young and 33.32
- 1:40:23closely followed them home. 733 also, but on the photo.
- 1:40:28I've seen a photo of Nico Young breaking the tape and it doesn't
- 1:40:30look like the goose is all that close to him.
- 1:40:34He's in strand 3rd 735.29 predominantly 1500 meter guy.
- 1:40:39Maybe Darren Mcelhenney of Owens country there back in 5th 736.
- 1:40:46Absolutely rapid. Jackson Sharp Aussie.
- 1:40:51Yes, there or not. He's from those one zoo cuz he's
- 1:40:53over there in the US. His name pops up every now and
- 1:40:56then through like these type of results, but he never kind of
- 1:40:59enters the domestic conversation, does he?
- 1:41:02And Geordie Beamish was in 7th, which did you hear him talk on
- 1:41:06the Coffee Cup podcast? His reflection on the two mile
- 1:41:10that he ran. He's human, wasn't he?
- 1:41:13Yeah, well, he's just very is quite critical of his
- 1:41:16performance. I thought maybe that might lead
- 1:41:18a light, a bit of a fire to be a bit closer in this one, but
- 1:41:23yeah, not to be. I guess it kind of makes sense
- 1:41:28looking at Young and the Goose in one and two.
- 1:41:32They're both very much strength based guys aren't they?
- 1:41:35So they would would have known to.
- 1:41:36They must have stretched this together.
- 1:41:39You'd imagine the women's mile. Emily Mackay of New Balance
- 1:41:44422.43, Lauren Ryan in there in 4th 426.17 and Rachel MacArthur
- 1:41:53Cooper tears other half at 1/2 W half back in 6th 427.3.
- 1:42:01And then the men's mile, Cole Hocher ran a absurd US record of
- 1:42:064345.94 and this was a head to head against the young phenom
- 1:42:14Sam Ruth who's been doing silly things.
- 1:42:17New Zealand boy 16 years old wasn't to be on this day.
- 1:42:21Finished 7th and 352.46. Did you see?
- 1:42:24Have you seen this race? No, no, I haven't.
- 1:42:28I haven't caught too much athletics this weekend.
- 1:42:30It's I've seen a video from Ruth start again.
- 1:42:33He's standing on like the infield of the 200 meter track
- 1:42:36and he's doing his his whole commentary shenanigans and like
- 1:42:40fair play. He's actually given legit.
- 1:42:43He's like Cole Hawker, Olympic champ on the front and reading
- 1:42:46out the credentials of everyone who's like chasing and stuff.
- 1:42:49But Sam Ruth gets course wired like in the first lap and the
- 1:42:56field is filled. So Kubsea finished second,
- 1:42:59Vincent Chichesi finished third and Jack Hansi of Australia was
- 1:43:05back in 6th. And none of them would let him
- 1:43:07in. You know, you can see him, He
- 1:43:10makes a move like right through the field, but on the outside.
- 1:43:12And then he's kind of trying to like budget in left and they're
- 1:43:16just like toe to toe. They wouldn't let him in.
- 1:43:18So he ran the race the absolute hardest way possible and he made
- 1:43:24his move. To be fair, he got up into, he
- 1:43:27might have got up into second if not fair that worst and he just
- 1:43:31went. The race went a lap too long for
- 1:43:34him. His last lap was just a painful
- 1:43:36trudge to the finish because once that lactic gotcha, you're
- 1:43:40done. Shot by the lactic sniper.
- 1:43:44Absolutely. Might need the fly cab.
- 1:43:47Yeah, I'm sure he'll have plenty of offers.
- 1:43:50He can be all right, won't he? Good to see Kube's here up in
- 1:43:54second. I know the guys behind on
- 1:43:57potentially who would be racing in like a world final but nice
- 1:44:01to see him get a good run. I see he alluded to it himself
- 1:44:07or Hock. I posted a photo of him breaking
- 1:44:09the tape and I mean naturally the cameras focused on Cole and
- 1:44:12like the background is a little bit blurred but you can see tear
- 1:44:18was 5-6 seconds back and he's commented saying you could have
- 1:44:23tagged my pixel. That's good.
- 1:44:32But yeah, Hawker and I don't know if you've seen his
- 1:44:35interview afterwards, he says like basically 345 isn't enough.
- 1:44:40Like I need to be looking at running 342 and the world
- 1:44:44records 43. Yeah, I mean that was, was is 43
- 1:44:50the indoor or outdoor record? I think 43 is the yeah full *.
- 1:44:55Yeah, like I thought 45 is perhaps what Ingebritsen
- 1:44:58remember, is it? No, Goose ran it last year and
- 1:45:00then Ingebritsen went out a couple of week or very quickly
- 1:45:05soon thereafter and ran faster. But it feels around this time.
- 1:45:10Yeah, this is a pretty phenomenal time, but Hawk is
- 1:45:14clearly in very good shape. Like if there was a major
- 1:45:16championship on right now you'd be he'd be struggling to bet
- 1:45:20against him wouldn't you? Anything from maybe 1500 through
- 1:45:23to 5K. Which in hindsight makes you
- 1:45:28look back at Tokyo because the 1500 was kind of dubbed as being
- 1:45:32wide open, wasn't it? The 5K maybe wasn't really in in
- 1:45:37the main part of the conversation, whereas now you
- 1:45:40look at it, it's like no one can get near him surely?
- 1:45:44Yeah, exactly. Like, yeah, I still think maybe
- 1:45:48a really fast 5K from the gun if it's like 3 Ethiopians like
- 1:45:53Gabriel, he what who we just spoke about.
- 1:45:55If they're all running like 1240 pace and they just put it at put
- 1:46:00him in like such a high degree of hurt from the first lap,
- 1:46:05maybe he's in trouble over 5K, but if you're running like 13
- 1:46:08minutes that he's too quick in that last lap.
- 1:46:12We've made it to listen to questions.
- 1:46:14I don't know D&D One who read out the winners of our
- 1:46:17competition, of which the post had over 400 entries.
- 1:46:22So thanks very much to everyone who entered for the chance to
- 1:46:25win a singlet. I can, I certainly can.
- 1:46:31So the winners were Riley McFarlane was the winner of the
- 1:46:44was it the Bix pack rhyme? Did I get that right?
- 1:46:47The 10 Bix gels plus a singlet. And is it at TM under score was
- 1:46:59our second winner and Elizabeth. And then how do I say
- 1:47:04Elizabeth's surname? Am I going to butcher this?
- 1:47:06So I think it's an Irish, Irish name I think, right.
- 1:47:10Well, you have a go. Now if you just tell me, ma
- 1:47:16matter. I think it's Ma.
- 1:47:19Ma. Spell Maher.
- 1:47:22If it's not Elizabeth, you know who you are.
- 1:47:24Yeah, but we'll get in touch. We'll we'll, we'll slide into
- 1:47:29their DMS to get their their details and and mail out the the
- 1:47:35bix slash easy double price packs.
- 1:47:38So thanks very much for participating in that.
- 1:47:41Thanks very much for your support.
- 1:47:42Thanks very much for listening. Yeah.
- 1:47:45And hopefully we can, we can get a few more of these singlets out
- 1:47:48over the coming weeks. But yeah, we'll, we'll keep you
- 1:47:52posted on that. What do you think of the gym
- 1:47:55attire tonight, Ryan? Yeah, you were rocking it,
- 1:47:57weren't you? I was went up a couple of sizes.
- 1:48:01I went my that was my my more gym size and then I have a tight
- 1:48:05more snug fit one for the come roster.
- 1:48:09Have you been wearing it to running?
- 1:48:11Yeah. Oh, look, to be honest, I
- 1:48:14haven't been wearing a top very often.
- 1:48:16I think that's one of your no nose, isn't it?
- 1:48:19But I feel like the weather permits it.
- 1:48:22No, I'm I'm all for it in the in the blistering heath, just when
- 1:48:27it's raining. And also last week when you when
- 1:48:29we ran round Munga and you were like, we are we going skin?
- 1:48:36And you said no. You just caught me a bit off
- 1:48:38guard. I wasn't prepared it.
- 1:48:41Was normally you just you're covered in lycra and hot cross
- 1:48:49buns so you didn't want to strip down.
- 1:48:53I still had chocolate drizzle down my chest.
- 1:48:55That's probably what it was. Yeah, those yoga pants were
- 1:48:58covered in chocolate drizzle. Was a good day, actually.
- 1:49:01Which do we recap? Running lakes at all?
- 1:49:03Or, or should we say, riding lakes?
- 1:49:07I mean, you can whisper it if you want.
- 1:49:10Not much to say other than I had a scan on Friday and the Jay and
- 1:49:14the doctors said that I'm free to go about my business and that
- 1:49:19my conditions are probably linked to just being a bit old,
- 1:49:23but that I should be fine. That was the diagnosis.
- 1:49:27She didn't say as much. What she said was there's been
- 1:49:31some mild changes but nothing to get.
- 1:49:33Nothing that should stop you from loading up as you have
- 1:49:38been. Obviously be aware of if things
- 1:49:40are too uncomfortable, but the adductive pain that I'm
- 1:49:43experiencing makes sense based on what you can see at the top
- 1:49:46of my doctor. But it's not anything that you
- 1:49:49probably can't keep on top of. Don't spark your load too
- 1:49:53quickly. So maybe sit around that 85% of
- 1:49:56full load that I have been doing for another four to six weeks
- 1:50:00and then hopefully after that I can get into full training.
- 1:50:06That's good news is, does it feel like a bit of a mental
- 1:50:11weight lifted? Yeah, just feels like clarity,
- 1:50:16like it's like, it's a degree of clarity like I feel.
- 1:50:20But yeah, certainly this is the most highest level of assurance
- 1:50:24I've got around actually doing something meaningful training
- 1:50:26wise. Although in full transparency,
- 1:50:30Raff and I were laughing saying Dean's gone in there and told
- 1:50:34the doctor what she needs to tell him.
- 1:50:35He. Literally talked there.
- 1:50:37He literally said the same thing to me.
- 1:50:39He's like, Oh yeah, but you can be persuasive, Dana.
- 1:50:41And I'm like Raff, she like e-mail it.
- 1:50:46She tells me what to tell you. You don't.
- 1:50:49That's not how those conversations go down.
- 1:50:53I can't talk underwater like him.
- 1:50:55I get told what I'm allowed to do and I try and follow
- 1:51:01instructions. Well, I appreciate the optimism,
- 1:51:04but that was doctor LED. So we we can expect a more
- 1:51:10normal week this week. I think so, yeah.
- 1:51:13There'll be still a drizzling of riding in there Thursday
- 1:51:17morning, Saturday morning rides for me.
- 1:51:20And then. But yes, I'm running.
- 1:51:21I think I'm doing a little bit of a workout tomorrow morning.
- 1:51:25Exciting times you got you're going to get your bridges entry
- 1:51:28and then and join me. I definitely am not doing that.
- 1:51:35No, no, I'll be, no, I'll just be getting looking forward to
- 1:51:40trying to get stuck into some proper training soon.
- 1:51:43That's what I'm excited for. But yeah, look, I did not paper
- 1:51:47running last week, did maybe 50 KS.
- 1:51:49All that because I only found out on Friday I could run.
- 1:51:52So I ran Friday afternoon before I rode to my parents house and I
- 1:51:55was great picking Saturday morning.
- 1:51:57So I couldn't do anything, snuck out for 30 minutes before the
- 1:51:59footy, did 90 minutes in terms of a long run on Sunday and then
- 1:52:04other than that was mainly writing.
- 1:52:06We're allowed to plug the the great picking because it did
- 1:52:10come through on the Instagram. Did it?
- 1:52:12Yeah. Come on.
- 1:52:14Is it poorly perfected? I think that could be it.
- 1:52:17A wine pour. Yeah, that's the one.
- 1:52:20So. The Menzies Vintage.
- 1:52:22Yeah, vintage. Their first vintage month for
- 1:52:26anyone interested that's still listening.
- 1:52:28My parents have moved into a place for the vineyard, and so
- 1:52:31we were out there picking grapes.
- 1:52:33They're wine grapes. So we're out there having a go
- 1:52:36on the weekend, picked 500 kilograms of grapes.
- 1:52:39So that was my gym for the weekend sorted.
- 1:52:43We've diversified there. I'm wait, to be fair.
- 1:52:46What don't we cover? Does that mean your old man is
- 1:52:51going to give us a bottle of wine for the endorsement?
- 1:52:54You'll yeah, you got to wait 12 months.
- 1:52:57It's got to age. But this time next year, if
- 1:53:00we're still recording, consider it done.
- 1:53:04Sounds good, right? We did have a few listener
- 1:53:08questions come through as well for the anniversary.
- 1:53:11I don't know if we save these for when Owen's back though,
- 1:53:14because we can get a bit more bit more space and opinion.
- 1:53:18Yeah, you won't get much from me, but.
- 1:53:23I just think perhaps the listeners want Owens opinion
- 1:53:26more than ours as well. Yeah, there's always that bias
- 1:53:30on a podcast of the one that's most up and about, which is
- 1:53:33definitely Owen so. Yeah, no, we.
- 1:53:37Do that, let's carry him over. Give him some shit.
- 1:53:40You know he's not going to listen back to her.
- 1:53:42Oh yeah, what? What should we say about him
- 1:53:44whilst he's not here? You should have run could have
- 1:53:47run under 14 minutes. I I've got YouTube Diaries to
- 1:53:52bring us home in the week I see him pop up on Instagram that
- 1:53:59George Mills was back on YouTube.
- 1:54:00He's been he's been on there in the past with I don't know if it
- 1:54:04was a Danish training partner. They were called the 5K guys and
- 1:54:09George Mills has refined this now he's gone his own.
- 1:54:11It looks like on potentially supporting the series given how
- 1:54:16heavily involved the Brandon was and placed here and there.
- 1:54:20But basically George Mills had a pretty big injury the back end
- 1:54:24of last season during Tokyo. He he'd fallen at some point.
- 1:54:28He fell a couple of times but won the falls.
- 1:54:30When he's done his wrist, he reveals that he also injured his
- 1:54:35Achilles. And I think he says he didn't
- 1:54:38run for like 3 months and he's putting together this video is
- 1:54:42pretty much the start of his return to run.
- 1:54:45So it was very relatable from my point of view.
- 1:54:48And yeah, he's out in Dalstrom, which is South Africa.
- 1:54:52And I think his first run was 5 by 4 minutes.
- 1:54:58And throughout the the recording of the video, he, he does his
- 1:55:01first like three or four runs. And like straight away when he
- 1:55:04gets on the treadmill, they record like his first run and
- 1:55:07he's like, yeah, the run is high is back.
- 1:55:09Like he's buzzing. And and you can just relate to
- 1:55:12that feeling so much when you haven't run and you get that
- 1:55:17high. It's the perfect way to wrap up
- 1:55:20out for Ed. The first year really isn't.
- 1:55:23It, it is like George, if you're listening, thanks.
- 1:55:27Because you've just summarized our, our whole journey in one
- 1:55:31video. Because you know what else he
- 1:55:34says? He's like he's, he hasn't put on
- 1:55:36anyways, he still looks in good shape and he's been riding and
- 1:55:39cross training a lot. And one of the days he goes to
- 1:55:42the track to do like not an intense workout, but he's just
- 1:55:46there with the team. He said he was leading some of
- 1:55:49the reps on the bike, you know, like taking them through in
- 1:55:52whatever seconds. And he was like, I was, I can't
- 1:55:54remember which way around it was.
- 1:55:55I was good for the girls and bad for the boys.
- 1:55:57Like they were do a fuming at me because I was going through like
- 1:56:013 seconds too quick. But he pulls his shorts up and
- 1:56:05like, flexes his quad and he's like, these, these lungs,
- 1:56:09they're not conditioned to be taken, these cycling legs around
- 1:56:12the track. That's so good.
- 1:56:17But yeah, good watch and look forward to following the series
- 1:56:20because hopefully it leads to, I think he said there's skipping
- 1:56:24indoors. Yeah, because they're kind of
- 1:56:26just getting back to it now with a priority on the outdoor
- 1:56:30season, obviously knowing that Europeans and com games are
- 1:56:33coming. So hopefully be a good follow
- 1:56:35for George. Good.
- 1:56:40It's interesting, it's a good reflection as well, rather
- 1:56:42because it's you want to sort of connect to content that is
- 1:56:45helpful for you at the time, wherever you're at.
- 1:56:48So yeah, certainly nice to hear someone comment on.
- 1:56:50And particularly with like, social media, a lot of stuff is
- 1:56:53cropped and, you know, fairly contrived, whereas it's nice to
- 1:56:58see the other side of it. Yeah, and his first run on the
- 1:57:03treadmill, it's at like 13 K an hour, so it's a nice reminder to
- 1:57:07take it easy. He didn't didn't wind it up with
- 1:57:11A330K at the end. Wasn't nudging it, no steady no.
- 1:57:16And he's got his coach, a strength and conditioning coach
- 1:57:20and a physio all there with them and it's like, wow, that's
- 1:57:23that's the dream in it some life.
- 1:57:27But then again, they'd only be shouting at you to lift weights,
- 1:57:29so. Yeah, true.
- 1:57:31Which, hey, which you got to tonight.
- 1:57:34Very good. Was in there ticking boxes.
- 1:57:37With with the with the deed show.
- 1:57:41Yeah, but what was he doing in there?
- 1:57:44He's meant to start his program. Yeah, he did say that's my first
- 1:57:49session complete, Tom, thanks very much.
- 1:57:52He did also whisper the other day that he was thinking about
- 1:57:55doing a session. So I don't know what.
- 1:57:57Watch this space watch. This space.
- 1:58:02Nice. I think that's us.
- 1:58:04Long stint. Thanks for being with us.
- 1:58:06Massive episode and thanks for the past year.
- 1:58:09We look forward to the next year.
- 1:58:12Onwards and upwards. Let's go.
- 1:59:55Music.
