- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up everyone, and welcome back to the program. In
- 0:03this episode, we're going to pick up where we left
- 0:05off with the UK inquiry on the grooming gangs. Sally
- 0:13Sally is the mother of a daughter who has found
- 0:16guilty of nine counts of perverting the course of justice
- 0:19for lying about being groomed by an Asian grooming gang
- 0:22and sentenced to eight years in prison. Despite this, Sally
- 0:26believes there is evidence to suggest her daughter was a
- 0:29genuine victim of the gangs. Sally described as previously stable,
- 0:34working family life until housing instability and family stress coincided
- 0:39with changes in her daughter's behavior. Doubts the family were
- 0:43buying fell through, but they had already moved out of
- 0:46their family home and all their possessions were in storage.
- 0:49A family friend was able to rent them apart renovated
- 0:52property on a short term basis, but it was not
- 0:55ideal for a family with four children. It was only
- 0:59meant to be temper cory, but the family ended up
- 1:01staying there for ten months. Her daughter began making up stories,
- 1:06such as claiming that her mother and stepdad were going
- 1:08away and leaving her to look after her five year
- 1:11old brother at school. This resulted in school involvement in
- 1:15their family life. The stresses the household was under led
- 1:19the arguments that brought in both the police and Social service.
- 1:23After leaving school at sixteen, Sally's daughter began working at
- 1:27a local pub. On one occasion, she was invited to
- 1:30a party. Sally received a call later that evening from
- 1:34one of her daughter's friends saying that her daughter was
- 1:36lying on the pavement outside the property. If Sally couldn't
- 1:40pick her up, they were going to take her to
- 1:41the bus stop and leave her there as she was
- 1:44making too much noise. When her mother found her lying
- 1:47on the ground, she was making a horrendous whaling sound
- 1:50and kept saying not to touch her. Her mother recognized
- 1:54that something was seriously wrong and took her to the hospital.
- 1:58Sally's daughter told the nurse carrying out the examination that
- 2:01she had been sexually assaulted. The hospital notes recorded that
- 2:05her genitulia were swollen and read. The hospital reported the
- 2:09incident to the police. Sally's daughter then received threats via snapchat,
- 2:14became scared about the outcome of the case, and withdrew
- 2:17from the process. Around the same time, Social Services closed
- 2:21their case on the family. Sally believes her daughter did
- 2:25not want to invite more trouble into the household. It
- 2:29later emerged in court that they had all been smoking cannabis.
- 2:33Sally believes her daughter had participated in that something happened
- 2:36to her, but she was found guilty of lying about
- 2:39being raped. Sally's daughter then began working as a kitchen
- 2:42assistant at a care home and a glass collector at
- 2:45a nightclub in addition to the job in the pub.
- 2:50After turning eighteen, she was able to work behind the
- 2:53bar at the nightclub, where her behavior began to change.
- 2:56She would return home with cuts and bruises. On one occasion,
- 2:59she can't back with a black eye and said there
- 3:01had been a fight in the nightclub and she'd been
- 3:04hit accidentally. She appeared more tired and distressed than usual.
- 3:10Sally began to notice that her daughter's phone would ring regularly,
- 3:13with Asian men appearing on the name screen. When asked
- 3:17about them, her daughter tried to hide the calls. The
- 3:20bar manager stopped her daughter from working on the main
- 3:22floor because she was too small and they struggled to
- 3:25keep track of her. They also ensured she was always
- 3:29paired with an older member of staff. As the Asian
- 3:32men would harass her if she was working alone. One
- 3:35Asian man gifted her of gold chain. Sally's daughter began
- 3:40saying she wanted to move away from home. She had
- 3:42regularly traveled to a nearby town by train. Sally would
- 3:46pick her up and drop her off at the station,
- 3:48and she never appeared to have been drinking or using drugs.
- 3:52One day, Sally returned home to find her daughter had
- 3:54left with her possessions and was ignoring her calls. She
- 3:59told colleagues that she had moved because her stepfather was
- 4:02harming her, but this was not true. After a few
- 4:06days of investigation, Sally managed to find where her daughter
- 4:09had moved to. When she arrived at the flat, she
- 4:12found her daughter with two police officers to whom she
- 4:15was reporting an allegation of rape. When her daughter handed
- 4:18her phone as evidence, the police found hundreds of messages
- 4:22from Asian men they believed she was being groomed. She
- 4:26was later found guilty of lying about the rape that
- 4:29she had reported. Over the course of the following year,
- 4:32Sally reported her daughter missing thirty nine times. She would
- 4:36often turn up in various towns across the region, battered bruised,
- 4:40intoxicated or on drugs. She was usually without underwear and
- 4:44spent increasing amounts of time in the hospital. One police
- 4:48force made a referral to the NRM, believing she was
- 4:51a victim of trafficking. Another police force repeatedly arrested her
- 4:55and seized her phone, which meant the referral agency could
- 4:58not contact her as her number kept changing. One incident
- 5:03involved Sally's daughter being locked in a room above an
- 5:05Indian restaurant, with the man refusing to let her leave.
- 5:09The police ignored it, believing she was lying. Another incident
- 5:13involved an Asian man following her, trying to grab her
- 5:16and take her away. Thankfully, she was with her sister
- 5:19and friends, who quickly put her in a taxi and
- 5:22sent her home. That same man was later arrested for
- 5:26breaking into a woman's house and sexually assaulting her while
- 5:30she slept. Nevertheless, the police still insisted Sally's daughter had
- 5:34been lying about the earlier incident. The police believed that
- 5:38she had mental health conditions and was deliberately self harming
- 5:41and putting herself in dangerous situations. They wanted to have
- 5:44her sectioned, but a doctor disagreed, noting that she still
- 5:48had capacity. Another incident involved a different Asian man who
- 5:52refused to leave Sally's daughter's flat. Police told him to leave,
- 5:56but asked no questions. He left behind the back lava,
- 5:59yet the police she showed no interest despite him carrying
- 6:01it while visiting a young woman after her flat door
- 6:05was kicked down, and yet another incident. While she was missing,
- 6:09she returned to her mother's home. Sally's daughter later explained
- 6:13that she had moved away to keep her family safe.
- 6:15She claimed she had been told if she did not
- 6:18do as her abuser said, they would harm her brother,
- 6:20rape her sister, and firebomb the house. She had lied
- 6:24to her colleagues about her stepdad to avoid bringing repercussions
- 6:28on the family. She went missing again. The police stated
- 6:32they believed she was making the whole thing up and
- 6:34injuring herself, so they charged her with perverting the course
- 6:37of justice. Part of her bell conditions required her not
- 6:41to leave Sally's house. The following week, her daughter attempted
- 6:45suicide by overdose. She went missing one final time and
- 6:48was found in a field with injuries to her head
- 6:51and ear, a severed finger, and numerous cuts and bruises.
- 6:56Following this, she wrote a post on Facebook alleging that
- 6:59she had been a victim of grooming gangs. The post
- 7:02went viral within a half hour. Police arrested her and
- 7:05she was sent to prison. Following her daughter's conviction, the
- 7:09family experience as stayed harassment intimidation, particularly from one Muslim man.
- 7:16Sally reports repeated failure by the police to protect them.
- 7:19She believes her daughter was a vulnerable young woman who
- 7:22lied at times, but was nevertheless groomed. Marlin Marlin is
- 7:28the father of a daughter who was a repeated victim
- 7:31of grooming. As well as being repeatedly failed by authorities,
- 7:35Marlin reported his fourteen year old daughter, Scarlet, missing a
- 7:38number of times because she was being groomed and exploited.
- 7:42The police informed Social Services that what Marlin was doing
- 7:46was appropriate as he was acting to safeguard his daughter. However,
- 7:50Social Services did not accept the police assessment and instead
- 7:53dragged out the investigation for three months. During that time,
- 7:57his daughter disclosed concerns to her school, which resulted in
- 8:00Social Services attending Marlin's home while his daughter was present.
- 8:05They told him that if he tried to stop her
- 8:07from leaving the house, she should call Social services or
- 8:11the police. Social Services, undermining his parental authority resulted in
- 8:16her missing episodes escalating dramatically. Social Services effectively gave her
- 8:21permission to go missing, and the case was enclosed without
- 8:24meaningful intervention. Marlin placed a formal complaint to Social Services,
- 8:29stating that he was struggling to cope with his daughter's
- 8:32missing episodes. The social worker assigned to him following this
- 8:36openly stated to him that they were only taking the
- 8:39case because of his complaint. This made him feel like
- 8:42the problem, rather than parent concerned would safeguarding his daughter
- 8:46from abuse. On one occasion, Marlin stood in front of
- 8:49the door to prevent his daughter from leaving land at night,
- 8:53resulting in her repeatedly kicking him and breaking three of
- 8:56his fingers. He reported this to Social Services, who simply
- 9:00stated he should walk away when she becomes violent. Even
- 9:04after showing them the bruises on his back that he
- 9:07received as he walked away, they did not change the
- 9:10advice they gave. Marln remains convinced that if his child
- 9:14were male and he were female, the response would have
- 9:17been different. Marlin would often spend his evenings driving in
- 9:20search of his daughter. Until three or four am while
- 9:23having to work the following day, which his employer was
- 9:26not supportive of. He often reported or missing to police,
- 9:29who would sometimes turn up at his house many hours later.
- 9:33On one occasion, he saw footage of the police saying
- 9:36not to bother, even waking him. This made him feel
- 9:39more like a problem rather than it being the safeguarding
- 9:43emergency that it was. Scarlett was unlawfully excluded from school
- 9:47due to grooming related behavior and assigned a new school
- 9:50where the grooming gang operated. A multi agency risk management
- 9:54meeting was eventually convened with Children's Services and the police
- 9:58Missing from Home team. While the meeting was ongoing, one
- 10:01of the police officers in attendance told Marlin to stop
- 10:04reporting his daughter missing. Marlin challenged this, which resulted in
- 10:08the police officers shouting at him in front of all
- 10:11in attendance. The officer has since been dismissed. The social
- 10:16worker and manager president did not intervene, but privately acknowledged
- 10:20he was right to continue to report his daughter missing.
- 10:23They refused to launch a formal complaint against the officer.
- 10:27Shortly after this, daughter went missing for several days and
- 10:31was eventually found that Marlin's mother's house. Unkept distressed and
- 10:35stating that she had been raped. Care staff returned her
- 10:38to the location of the rape, thereby destroying forensic opportunities,
- 10:42and failed to report it to police until days later.
- 10:46Marlin had to make his own referral to the rape
- 10:48crisis center, by which time forensic evidence was lost. The
- 10:52perpetrator was arrested, but belle with a condition not to
- 10:56contact Marlin's daughter. Immediately upon leaving the station, he called
- 11:00her and threatened her life. He was an adult and
- 11:03drug dealer, and his association soon began attending Marlin's home.
- 11:08His daughter was terrified of them. An older woman began
- 11:12to groom and manipulate Marlin's daughter under the guise of friendship.
- 11:16After another missing episode, Marlin was able to trace his
- 11:19daughter to a specific property. Despite repeated calls and reports
- 11:24of men entering the property, both police and social services
- 11:27failed to remove her or issue an abduction warning notice.
- 11:32His daughter was later found to be the victim of
- 11:34criminal exploitation, including drug supply, prostitution, and being forced to
- 11:39dig up a firearm. These acts were directed by the
- 11:42older woman, amongst others. At this point, the impact on
- 11:46Marlin was catastrophic. He was physically exhausted, anxious, depressed, and
- 11:52lived in constant fear. He was attacked by massed individuals
- 11:55in his home, with the police response delayed and dismissive.
- 12:00Marlin's daughter was eventually taken into secure care, where she
- 12:04was subjected to further abuse, including sexual abuse by staff
- 12:07and other children, neglect, and safeguarding failure. Marlin made multiple
- 12:13complaints at a court hearing. Social Services attempted to place
- 12:16his daughter on child protection plan for emotional abuse and
- 12:20neglect by Marlin himself. However, the judge intervened and ordered
- 12:24this to be amended to be recorded as beyond parental control.
- 12:29Marlin's daughter continued to be moved between unsuitable placements. She
- 12:33was groomed, repeatedly, trafficked, forced into drug supply, and rape
- 12:38by adult men. She became pregnant as a result of rate.
- 12:42The handling of her termination by professionals was traumatic and negligent.
- 12:46Police later charged Scarlet with intent to supply Class A
- 12:49drugs despite her being a victim of trafficking and on
- 12:52the National Referral mechanism. Scarlet was placed in a unit
- 12:56run entirely by male Muslim staff where she was groomed again,
- 13:00racist abuse and extremists comments were made to her. Marlin
- 13:05again raised concerns, which were ignored. Despite his repeated attempts
- 13:09to help his daughter, he has experienced many instances of
- 13:12violence from her as a result of the trauma in grooming.
- 13:15He's experienced many assaults, received a black eye, and had
- 13:19to sleep barricaded in his room. He repeatedly requested domestic
- 13:23abuse support, but was refused because he was a male parent.
- 13:27He's been forced to complete parenting courses and blamed for
- 13:31his daughter's abuse. The whole experience has harmed Marlin financially, emotionally,
- 13:36and psychologically. He states it has destroyed his life. He's
- 13:40no longer the person he used to be, and Marlin's
- 13:43case highlights that parents can be victims of both grooming
- 13:46networks as well as widespread institutional failure. If you'd like
- 13:51to hear more of Marlin's story in greater detail, he
- 13:54recently published a book about his experiences titled in Plain Sight.
