- 1:01Speaker 2: coach here at Brandon Coach. How you doing.
- 1:03Speaker 3: I'm doing good?
- 1:04Speaker 2: Man, appreciate it you having me on Man. Absolutely, It's
- 1:07Speaker 2: always baseball, isn't.
- 1:08Speaker 3: It always here around?
- 1:09Speaker 2: So let's talk a little baseball. You guys had another
- 1:13Speaker 2: really good year this year. We were talking about just
- 1:15Speaker 2: how weird in baseball. People know this, how weird baseball is.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Pedal comes out of you know, the region is a
- 1:21Speaker 2: four seed. They go on to win the state championship
- 1:23Speaker 2: Oklahoma came out of nowhere. You know, Ole Miss did
- 1:26Speaker 2: it a few years ago. You said, you guys did.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Baseball is just a weird game, and it's a weird
- 1:29Speaker 2: but fun game.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:30Speaker 3: It's all about getting hot at the right time. That's
- 1:32Speaker 3: why I can't stress too much over the way season starts.
- 1:36Speaker 3: It's all about how it ends. We saw that in
- 1:39Speaker 3: twenty four and we won it with three freshmen on
- 1:41Speaker 3: the field, and we're thinking it's more of a rebuilding
- 1:43Speaker 3: year and start the season off the low five hundred
- 1:46Speaker 3: and find a way to get hot at the right
- 1:47Speaker 3: time and ended up winning state championship and again enough
- 1:51Speaker 3: to go back the second year and Madison took that
- 1:53Speaker 3: one and then again Pedal last year started off really slow,
- 1:55Speaker 3: but Pedal had a really good team. Coach Douglas did
- 1:57Speaker 3: a good job with those guys, and again they got
- 2:00Speaker 3: hot at the right time. But they had the talent
- 2:02Speaker 3: all year, just didn't really play real well early in
- 2:05Speaker 3: the season, but then put it together and they were
- 2:08Speaker 3: they were it'll be tough for anybody to handle late
- 2:10Speaker 3: and late in the season. And they were one that
- 2:12Speaker 3: was projected pre season in the top one or two
- 2:17Speaker 3: in the state and both of us were up there
- 2:19Speaker 3: and ended up being both of us left in the
- 2:20Speaker 3: in the South. So, yeah, hats off to them, really
- 2:23Speaker 3: good year. But yeah, they got they got really hot,
- 2:25Speaker 3: and they were tough to handle.
- 2:26Speaker 2: You know what's interesting about like baseball, just take Pedal
- 2:28Speaker 2: for instance, and I don't remember because I don't have
- 2:31Speaker 2: the stats in front of me, they didn't hit a
- 2:32Speaker 2: ton of long balls in the regular season, and it's
- 2:35Speaker 2: like when they got in the postseason, the ball just
- 2:37Speaker 2: came off the bats game after game after game. What
- 2:41Speaker 2: do you what do you attribute that to something like
- 2:43Speaker 2: that or you know, just something in baseball that teams
- 2:46Speaker 2: maybe were very average at, but then you get them
- 2:48Speaker 2: in a situation and you see it. You see it
- 2:50Speaker 2: in all levels of baseball. Then all of a sudden
- 2:52Speaker 2: they just wow you with it.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that just just like we talked about earlier,
- 2:55Speaker 3: getting hot at the right time, the players build confidence.
- 2:59Speaker 3: That confidence bleeds in to the rest of the team.
- 3:01Speaker 3: A guy gets hot and hits a home run, and the
- 3:03Speaker 3: next thing you know, everybody's hight. The next guy gets
- 3:05Speaker 3: in there, he feels good about it because what he
- 3:07Speaker 3: just saw, and then he runs one out of the park.
- 3:08Speaker 3: And they just get on a run and hit multiple
- 3:12Speaker 3: over over a few games where they may have not
- 3:14Speaker 3: hit any in previous games. Pedal was, like you said,
- 3:17Speaker 3: a little slow to start, but then put it together
- 3:19Speaker 3: and swung it really well. And that's that's just where
- 3:22Speaker 3: it goes.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Visit with Daniel Best, he's the head baseball coach here
- 3:26Speaker 2: at Brandon Thursday edition of your program. You guys, players
- 3:30Speaker 2: that play football play multiple sports. I know that you are,
- 3:34Speaker 2: but just talk. Some coaches are not an advocate of
- 3:36Speaker 2: specialization kind of where you've kind of moved and been
- 3:40Speaker 2: in your career as a head coach, and of course
- 3:42Speaker 2: you played ball, played at Southern mess where you were
- 3:45Speaker 2: on specialization or not.
- 3:46Speaker 3: For kids, yeah, I think they should play all they
- 3:48Speaker 3: can play. Be well rounded athlete competing year round. It's
- 3:52Speaker 3: one thing to practice part of the year and then
- 3:55Speaker 3: compete another part of the year. It's different for guys
- 3:57Speaker 3: that are competing year round, no matter what the sport is.
- 4:00Speaker 3: The year that we wanted we I think we had
- 4:02Speaker 3: ten football players on roster that year and that's the
- 4:04Speaker 3: most we've ever had. Uh nine the next year and
- 4:07Speaker 3: we went back this year. We're down with I think
- 4:10Speaker 3: we only have three with football this year, a couple
- 4:13Speaker 3: of injuries, or we may have a couple more that
- 4:15Speaker 3: would that would be out there, but yeah, they need
- 4:19Speaker 3: to play it as long as they can play it.
- 4:20Speaker 3: A lot of these guys at this level are really
- 4:22Speaker 3: good athletes, and they're they're good enough to play both
- 4:24Speaker 3: and come over and pick up the next sport and
- 4:27Speaker 3: be ready to roll. And if you look at your
- 4:29Speaker 3: rosters for your your big time college programs or SEC schools,
- 4:32Speaker 3: those guys that are that they're signing to play baseball
- 4:35Speaker 3: or guys that were playing multiple sports in high school,
- 4:37Speaker 3: they're not guys that are that were specialized. Yes, there
- 4:40Speaker 3: are some of those guys, but a lot of those
- 4:42Speaker 3: guys play both ways. And for me, I don't I
- 4:44Speaker 3: don't think you tell a kid or try to get
- 4:47Speaker 3: a kid to do one unless a kid is average
- 4:51Speaker 3: and not really playing a lot at one and an
- 4:53Speaker 3: elite at another one and he knows that right that's
- 4:56Speaker 3: what he's gonna do and he makes that decision, then
- 4:58Speaker 3: I'm okay in that in that instance. But for guys
- 5:00Speaker 3: that are just wanting to compete and get after it,
- 5:02Speaker 3: just play them all, play them as long as you can.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Kind a couple of minutes left here with kind of coach.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Daniel Best head baseball coach. We've seen obviously, guys from
- 5:09Speaker 2: Brandon Goanna play at a high level, you know, college
- 5:13Speaker 2: and even beyond. We've seen here recently in the state
- 5:15Speaker 2: of Mississippi, from the Parkers you know, to Jackson Prepp
- 5:19Speaker 2: players and others going to the major leagues. It seems
- 5:22Speaker 2: like the competition is stay gets better every year.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Absolutely, there's a lot of good baseball and a lot
- 5:26Speaker 3: of good players. You look at all the draft picks
- 5:30Speaker 3: here lately with with Connor Griffin and then Booth goes
- 5:33Speaker 3: in the first round out of Oak Grove this year,
- 5:34Speaker 3: Kevin Roberts goes and all just really good players. And
- 5:39Speaker 3: they're like you said, the Parker brother there's a lot
- 5:41Speaker 3: of them and a lot of them playing at a
- 5:43Speaker 3: really high level. They're not guys that are just getting
- 5:45Speaker 3: picked up and not really doing any They're guys that
- 5:47Speaker 3: are going in and competing like right off the bat.
- 5:49Speaker 3: So that just shows you the type of talent that
- 5:51Speaker 3: they have and the type of talent coming out of Mississippi.
- 5:53Speaker 2: He's Daniel Best head baseball coach here Brandon coach, thank
- 5:57Speaker 2: you for jumping in. I know it's been a busy
- 5:58Speaker 2: day and it will continue to beat to You'll got

- 6:02Speaker 3: Yeah that's right. Uh, get out here in the heat
- 6:04Speaker 3: and see the fans and go over here and do
- 6:07Speaker 3: a little home run derby on the softball field.
